Enhance your Experience

In the heart of the eternal city there is something that lives and breath, is its river: the tiber..

The Modern Tiber is a splendid way to watch the less known part of Rome, discover new points of view, have a relaxing and interesting trip, staying off the crowded road of the center, and get in connection with everything that you want to see, even to better understand our history and old time habits, or to live a romantic adventure.

Rome River Cruise

If Rome’s traffic puts you off taking sightseeing by bus, how about a peaceful cruise down the river?

The Tiber River, or Tevere in Italian, is the third longest river in Italy and is famous for being one of the defining characteristics of Rome. Because of its historical importance and worldwide fame, a Rome river cruise could be a fantastic idea for those who want a break from touring this stunning ancient city on foot.

The Tiber River

The river Tiber divides the ancient city of Rome, with all its historic monuments , from the Vatican and Trastevere neighborhoods .

The river has been part of some of Rome’s dramatic moments of history. Romulus and Remus were found by the She-Wolf by the Tiber, and at least one emperor and pope were disposed of in her waters.

Until the 19 th century, the river was a major feature of the city, flooding annually and filling the city with water. You can still see signs around the city showing the level the water reached in different years – there’s a beautiful Medieval one from 1277 on Via Arco dei Banchi, close to Castel Sant’Angelo .

Then high embankments were built, and the river today is mostly seen from the bridges above.

But at each bridge , there are stairs down to the river. The Vatican side is popular with joggers and cyclists, and in the summer, bars and food stalls line the riverbanks as part of the Estate Romana. The other side is less well-kept, and few people use it.

Rome by Boat

Taking a cruise down the river is a great way to escape the crowds for a while. In summer, the cooler air can be a welcome relief from the heat and traffic of the city streets. The boat is also a quick way to get from Piazza del Popolo to Trastevere .

Types Of Cruises

Hop-on, hop-off.

If you don’t want to be on your feet all day, the boat is a great transport option. While there are lots of buses in the center, there’s also a lot of traffic, and moving can be a slow, sweaty process. With the boat, you can get from Piazza del Popolo to Trastevere in about 20 minutes.

There are audio guides available in different languages, but my booking confirmation didn’t explain that you have to bring your own headphones (none of the other passengers had been told this either).

There’s also a single trip option which will save you a few euros and take you once in each direction.

Daily from 10.00 to 17.00

Boats pass every 30 minutes.

Aperitivo Cruise

When in Rome, you will quickly learn to love the Italian habit of an aperitivo before dinner. Instead of having dinner at the usual time, book a cruise down the river with a glass of wine and traditional snacks. You’ll appreciate the cool air and quieter atmosphere away from the city traffic while you float down the Tiber.

The ticket for this cruise includes a 24hr ticket for the boat, so you can spend the next day hopping on and off to visit riverside monuments like the Ara Pacis , Campo dè Fiori or do some shopping on the exclusive Via Giulia.

18.00 Thursday – Sunday

From Castel Sant’Angelo pier

Sushi Cruise

For a more international drinks experience, the Sushi Cruise comes with fresh sushi and the cocktail of your choice. The leisurely trip down the river takes 75 minutes and also includes a 24hr ticket so you can come back the next day.

18.00 Monday – Wednesday

From Castel Sant’Angelo Pier

Practical Information

Reaching the river.

The Tiber has a very high embankment. There are steps down to the river close to each of the bridges. Most of them are very steep, though the ones in Trastevere are easier to walk down.

The steps to the Trastevere boat stop

If you aren’t able to walk down the steps, there is a ramp on Lungotevere Ripa, near Porta Sublicio, about a 10-minute walk from Tiber Island.

Most of the steps to the river are steep and not always well kept

Where To Get The Boat

The main stop is at Trastevere. Here you’ll find a ticket office in case you haven’t bought your ticket online. This is the only stop on the Trastevere/Vatican side of the river.

boat trips rome italy

To reach the stop, you can cross the river at Ponte Garibaldi or Ponte Cestio (the island bridge). There are steps to the river next to both bridges. Take either of them, and you’ll find the departure point is almost in front of you when you get to the bottom.

If you are coming by public transport , take the no.8 tram or H bus and get off at Piazza Belli, then cross the road to the river.

boat trips rome italy

The Trastevere stop

There are 3 other stops, though 2 of them are request stops. If anyone is waiting or asks to get off at Ponte Sisto or Castel Sant’Angelo, the boat will dock. Otherwise, it continues until it reaches Ponte Cavour.

After picking up any passengers, the boat turns around and heads back to Trastevere, this time without stopping. The direct journey takes about 20 minutes.

If you want to get on at any of the other stops, be warned that the signposting to find them is almost non-existent. There are no signs at street level, and the signs are so small you can’t see them from the other side of the river.

Signs at the stops are minimal

What To See

You don’t actually see much from the river because of the high embankment and the many trees that line the roads on either side. There are no real sights until the river bends close to the Vatican, then you’ll see St. Peter’s at a distance (it’s not next to the river), Castel Sant’Angelo , and the angels on the bridge outside.

Experience On Board

The experience is very relaxing. The crew collects your ticket or takes a photo of your online booking form and provides you with a receipt, then you are free to sit inside or upstairs.

Inside seating

The boats are not modern. There are benches at the side upstairs and downstairs and additional plastic seating (and tables downstairs).

The multilingual audio guide is built into the benches, but headphones are not provided. If you want to bring your own, you will need headphones with a jack connection.

There is a small restroom on board.

The restroom could be a bit of a squeeze

  • Don’t expect a sightseeing tour. Most monuments aren’t by the river as it used to flood a lot. However, it is a nice way to move across the center quickly and calmly.
  • Bring headphones with a jack connection if you want to use the audio guide.
  • The steps to the river at Trastevere aren’t too difficult, but be warned they are steep and quite narrow at other points. Particularly if you have a pushchair or heavy bags, you might struggle.
  • Stop at the kiosk between the steps and the bridge to Tiber Island to try the best grattachecca in the city. These summer drinks are the Roman version of a Slushy. A massive block of ice is shaved by hand as you wait with a special tool, then the ice is covered in syrup and topped with fruit.

Cruising the Tevere

Getting around rome by boat—sightseeing boat trips, dinner cruises, and hop-on/hop-off boat tours on the tiber river.

After more than a century of pretty much ignoring the Tiber (building high embankments seems to doom all urban rivers to such mental neglect), Rome now has a river cruising service like those in Paris and London.

Not that is it anywhere near as good as those in Paris and London—the tall 19th cenury embankments flanking the Tiber in Rome hide much of the city from view, and the commentary on the day cruise is pretty canned.

However, it does make for a rather different take on the Eternal City, and a bit of a relaxing hour away from the relentless sightseeing of ancient ruins and Old Master art decorating the countless churches and museums.

The new rubber raft tour is intriguingly original as well.

The Tiber cruises

Rome hop-on hop-off river cruise + optional bus tour, rome tiber river night cruise with dinner or wine, rome fun boats - urban lite rafting in the city center.

In addition to those exciting new rubber boat tours of the Tiber (which put in near Piazza del Popolo and come out near Campo dei Fiori), Battelli di Roma offers two evening crociere (cruises)—the 6pm with wine and cheese, the 9pm with a full dinner (for those, arrive 20 minutes early)—plus a 24-hour hop-on/hop-off boat serivce up and down the Tiber River (Fiume Tevere) in a one-hour loop accompanied by recorded info on what you are passing blaring in 7 languages.

The loop runs from Isola Tiburtina (Tiber Island) to the Ponte Duca d'Aosta bridge. (You can also combine this with a 48-hour hop-on/hop-off double-decker bus tour ticket—best of both.)

The main embarkation point for the cruises is Ponte Sant'Angelo , in the middle of the route, across the river from Castel Sant'Angelo , just a few yards upriver from the bridge itself—more specifically, along the Lungotevere Tor di Nona between where Via del Mastro and Via della Rondinella hit it.

There's another stop across from Tiber Island (on the southern, Trastevere bank), on the Lungotevere degli Anguillara between Ponte Garibaldi and Ponte Cestia.

In summer, other offers are often put on board, like weekend cruises all the way down the Tiber to the ruins of Ostia Antica . Check the (poorly updated) website for details.

Boat-Hopping on the Amalfi Coast: Day Trip from Rome

  • Cruise the crystal-blue waters of the Amalfi Coast on three separate ferry rides. From the water, you'll be able to fully drink in the stunning vistas that draw countless visitors to this corner of Italy.
  • Enjoy free time in the picturesque town of Positano to shop, snack, stroll, or swim.
  • Taste homemade limoncello and watch a demonstration of how it's made at a peaceful lemon grove with spectacular views.
  • Relax and enjoy a perfect day on the Amalfi Coast. Your expert guide is on hand to answer any questions and to handle all logistics.

Tour description

Spend the perfect day on the amalfi coast on a carefully curated tour from rome..

Most Amalfi Coast tours from Rome stick to the roads, seeing the crystal-clear waters of the coastline from above but hardly glimpsing its cliffside towns at all. This tour is different. You’ll take in the breathtaking coast from both land and sea for the most complete experience possible! Touring the Amalfi Coast on the water, you’ll have perfect views of the coastline’s most famous asset: its colorful towns. Along the way, you'll step onto dry land for an authentic limoncello tasting in a pretty orchard with stunning views. You’ll also explore the idyllic streets of both Amalfi Town and Positano with plenty of opportunities to go sightseeing, do a bit of shopping, and maybe even splash in the sea if the mood takes you.

Carefully balancing the value and expertise of a guided tour with free time to explore and shop at your own pace, our full-day Amalfi Coast tour from Rome offers you the perfect day in paradise without the hassle of organizing your own trains, cars, and ferry rides.

Head from Rome to the Amalfi Coast by train with a guide by your side.

Your Amalfi Coast tour from Rome meets early in the morning at Termini train station. Meet your friendly English-speaking guide and set off on a comfortable 90-minute journey by high-speed train. After arriving in Salerno, you’ll board a small ferry and relax as you watch the stunning Amalfi coastline stretch out before you, giving you a panoramic snapshot of the sights to come.

Go boat-hopping and taste homemade limoncello for an authentic Amalfi experience.

Now it’s time for a little touring on foot. Climbing ashore at Amalfi town, you’ll slip away from the crowds as you follow your guide uphill to a beautiful cliffside lemon orchard run by the same family for six generations. You'll walk through groves of fragrant lemon trees on this nature excursion just for your tour group as you learn what makes lemons from the Amalfi coast unique. With the coast and sea spread out below you, you’ll enjoy a demonstration and tasting of one of the region's most beloved products: sweet, tangy limoncello. Made right on the farm, there's nothing better. From there, you'll head back down to the streets of Amalfi with plenty of time to do a little strolling, shopping and snacking.

Putter around the picturesque town of Positano.

After more time spent cruising the water, the next port of call on your Amalfi Coast tour is Positano!

Following an orientation walk with your guide, you’ll have approximately two and a half hours of free time to explore the charming fishing village, a popular haunt among Hollywood’s biggest and brightest. Sample fresh seafood at a beachfront restaurant, shop the stylish boutiques, or simply slip into the sea for a quick splash!

As the afternoon draws to a close, you’ll meet your guide and board the boat one last time for a scenic cruise back to Salerno. Hop on a train for your return to Rome—you'll be back in the Eternal City just in time for dinner!

Please note: In the rare event of rough seas where it is impossible to travel by ferry, we will provide a private bus to take you up and down the coast so you won't miss a thing!

We are so very glad we did this tour! The lemon farm was a unique experience and we loved it. It is a tough climb but there is a break about one third of the way up. The Amalfi coast is breathtaking! Our tour guide Antonina was a delight! If I could change one thing it would be more time at Amalfi and less at positano.

Wow! Visiting the Amalfi Coast for a day after spending time in Rome was like another world! Our guide Roberta was knowledgeable and engaging. The hike to the top of the limoncello farm was difficult (200 large steps up), but worth it in the end, just take your time. The views at the top were incredible. We had a perfect amount of free time for lunch and exploring/shopping. The train/ferry were seamless thanks to Roberta. Would absolutely recommend this day trip to anyone staying in Rome looking for a unique experience and visit to the gorgeous Amalfi Coast!

Villa Borghese Lake with row boat rentals

How To Rent Rowboats on Villa Borghese Lake in Rome

Sean Finelli Last Updated: November 18, 2022

In Rome, you’ll likely spend a lot of time on your feet exploring museums, ancient monuments, and interesting neighborhoods. So, when you need a break why not head to Villa Borghese and rent a rowboat? It’s a relaxing activity you can do with the kids or someone special in one of Rome’s most beautiful parks. Here’s how to rent a rowboat in Villa Borghese, plus some other things to do while you’re there.

Pro Tip:  Planning how to spend your time in Rome? Bookmark this post in a “Rome” folder in your browser, so you can circle back to it when you’re in the city. See our  guide to Rome  for more planning resources, our  top Rome tours  for a memorable trip, and  how to see Rome in a day .

Villa Borghese

Villa Borghese was Cardinal Scipione Borghese’s residence and secret garden. Now anyone can enjoy the grounds of this beautiful place. With its incredible history and multitude of things to do, it’s one of Rome’s top parks to visit and it’s the starting point of our  DIY Rome Walking Tour .

After wandering the side streets of Rome, trekking across the ancient roads of the Roman Forum, and climbing the seemingly endless steps up to St. Peter’s dome, you may need a break. For a cool relaxing spot, head to Villa Borghese to enjoy the park and its man-made lake. There, rent a rowboat.

How To Rent a Rowboat in Villa Borghese

boat trips rome italy

The lake is circled by the Viale del Lago footpath and its centerpiece is the Temple of Asclepius. You can’t miss it. Asclepius was the Greek god of medicine and healing, and that’s exactly what your legs will need after all this time exploring Rome.

When you arrive at the small lake, find your way over to the little boat house where they rent rowboats. It’s an inexpensive activity perfect for the kids or a little romance with that special someone.

The only hiccup is that the lake is run by a few Romans who don’t speak English. Don’t worry, it’s easy! Look for the cassa , which means cashier, and find a way to communicate your party size. Counting on your fingers is international enough.

The boats cost €3 for 20 minutes per person and there are discounts for kids. They don’t charge per boat, but per person, so don’t feel the need to couple up to save money. The more boats the merrier!

They will hand you a ticket with a number on it and call your number. Just stay on the dock and have the boat master look at your ticket to be safe. Otherwise, they may call your number in Italian and you’ll miss your turn (sad face).

Once you’re on the boat, you’ll have 20 minutes—that’s plenty of time. It will take a good five minutes to get the hang of rowing, at least for me it did. After that, it’s just about finding shade and dodging the turtles and ducks.

When your time is up the boat master will call your number—in Italian. This is the tricky part. Maybe it is best to start heading back after 18 or 19 minutes, but remember that you are in Italy and everyone is late, so don’t panic!

Galleria Borghese

Sean rowing - rent boats in Villa Borghese

Villa Borghese is a very well-known treasure of this city and there are endless activities within this gem. The Galleria Borghese is one of them. This museum inside the park is considered to hold one of the greatest collections of baroque sculptures in Rome.

Some of Bernini’s masterpieces rest inside this amazing gallery, which you’ll find in the north-east corner of Villa Borghese on Viale dell’Uccelliera. We recommend you stop by for a visit.

Tickets are often booked out fast, so make sure you book in advance. Tour the gallery yourself with this  itinerary of must-see Bhorgese Gallery artwork or take a private Borghese Gallery tour for the benefits of tickets and an expert local guide who’s passionate about this museum.

Pincio Terrace

Il Pincio Terrace Overlooking Piazza Del Popolo

Another great thing to do in Villa Borghese is to head up to see one of the best views in Rome from “Pincio.” Unlike the other two options, it is completely free to enjoy and the view overlooks St. Peter’s Basilica, Piazza Del Popolo, and the rest of this picturesque city.

To find this viewpoint from Piazza del Popolo, look towards Villa Borghese on your left if you are facing the twin churches. You’ll see people taking the footpath in the direction of Il Pincio. It’s a great spot for a quick selfie of you and your family, partner, or on your own! Check out other cool free things to do in Rome .
