3 Days in Chengdu, China – The Perfect Itinerary

All of the best things to do if you only have 3 days in Chengdu, China in our perfect itinerary.

Table of Contents

Day 1 – Research Base Of Giant Panda Breeding

Day 2 – walk around chengdu city, day 3 – leshan and the grand buddha, save this pin for later.

Ah Chengdu – now this was a place that really surprised us. After our incredible overland journey from Shangri La through the Tibetan Kham province , we really weren’t looking forward to getting to a big city.

We had visions of crazy traffic, heavy pollution and relentless crowds. Instead we found Chengdu to be a relaxed destination with a hip and fun vibe. It was quite clean (by Chinese standards) and not too bad to get around.

3 Days in Chengdu – The Perfect Itinerary

We spent three days in Chengdu and honestly, we would have happily spent an extra few days hanging out. But if like us you are on a tight schedule when you are in the city, here are some of the best things to do with only three days in Chengdu!

It would almost be criminal to come all the way to Chengdu and not see those black and white bundles of cuteness. Indeed, the panda bears usually are the main reason people visit this modern city in Central China.

Even if you aren’t the type of person to buckle at the knees at adorable, cuddly creatures, you still need to go visit the pandas. Even if you hate zoos, you still need to go. No arguing.

We suggest waking up early and aiming to be at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding for when it opens at 8am. Not only will you beat the majority of the crowds, but also this is when they feed the pandas.

During the day they tend to sit around and scratch themselves, those damn cute bastards, but when it is feeding time they are full of energy. We arrived just as the gates open and sprinted to the enclosures like crazed Justin Bieber fans (don’t laugh, you will too).

Our timing was perfect, as the pandas spent the next hour munching on bamboo, wrestling with each other and climbing trees (then falling off of them).

We had managed to visit a good part of the centre before the stampede of camera happy domestic tourists showed up, so it almost felt like we had the pandas all to ourselves.

We stayed at the centre until about 2pm, watching the bears drift off to sleep and then checking out some of the documentary movies and the museum that is also included in your entry price. After that we (reluctantly) jumped on a bus and headed back into Chengdu for some spicy Sichuan food and cold beer. A nice solid day out.

For a city of 14 million people, Chengdu is surprisingly civilised, organised and clean. Normally we shy away from cities, but walking around Chengdu turned out to be a pleasant and enjoyable experience.

From wherever you are staying, make your way to visit Chairman Mao’s Statue as he keeps watch over the adjoined square. Take the obligatory selfies with Uncle Mao, and then move onto the massive People’s Park.

You can easily spend a couple of hours wandering around the People’s Park, watching the locals practice Tai Chi and harmoniously serenade each other with ear-splitting renditions of top 40 Chinese love songs.

Don’t worry – If you think you hear a pack of spider monkeys being slaughtered with circular saws, it is just Chinese karaoke. There are plenty of tea houses scattered throughout the park as well, so pull up a chair, order a pot of your favourite jasmine-scented hibiscus tea and do as the locals do – talk very loudly.

When you have finished with the People’s Park, there are quite a few temples to enjoy. The Qingyang Temple is next to a lovely Park and is worth a portion of your time. Actually, the park itself also deserves at least a wander through, so do that as well while you are in the neighbourhood.

The Wenshu Temple was one of the top Chengdu attractions and we spent quite a while savouring the quiet corners of the grounds. The cost is supposedly 5RMB, but no one ever stopped us to pay.

Chengdu is also known for its cuisine, so don’t forget to taste some of the local delicacies .

Wenshu Temple Best Things To Do With Three Days In Chengdu

On day 3 head to the Xinnanmen bus station and on to Leshan, home to the world’s largest stone Buddha. It will take about 2 hours to get to Leshan, depending on traffic, so leave early.

Once you get there jump on bus number 13 and take it right to the gate of the Grand Buddha (this will take 30 minutes at least).

The grounds for the Grand Buddha are massive and quite beautiful to walk around, even with the thousands of flag-following tourists stumbling in front of all of your photos.

What you are definitely going to want to do is walk down the steps to the Grand Buddha’s feet so you can stare up at the 71 metre tall peaceful sculpture.

Unless you are like us and timed your trip on a Sunday and there is a 3 hour wait to get to the bottom. In that case, you might decide standing in line for three hours sounds horrible and you will skip it. Shame.

You can easily spend at least half a day wandering around to the little pagodas. Don’t miss the temple over the bridge, with its hundreds of slightly spooky looking statues.

You can take a boat trip along the river to get a great view of the Buddha from the water, but we skipped this. Another thing we have heard is you can take a bus and walk to the shores across from the Giant Buddha and enjoy the view for free. Worth doing if you have the time.

Once you’ve ticked off this Chengdu must see attraction in Leshan, time to head back to Chengdu for some more spicy food and cold beer! The last bus leaves about 8.30pm, but this could change. Check when you get off the bus to avoid being stranded.

Note – We actually really liked the look and feel of Leshan, and if we our visas weren’t about to expire, we would have happily stayed in Leshan for a night or two. Perhaps consider this when making your plans for Chengdu and the surrounding areas. Add in a climb of Mount Emei, which is also meant to be awesome.

The Giant Buddha on the river side of Leshan is indeed impressive.

But you didn’t try the hot pot in Chengdu? That’s something you shouldn’t miss, and won’t forget if you did try. Also I would suggest to order a Chengdu-snacks package (in Long Chao Shou Restaurant on Chun-Xi Road).

A great many to see and to do in the city and in the nearby area…

I’m going back to Chengdu for a 2nd time in October.. I did visit Leshan and the Panda Center when I went, but missed people’s park so I’ll have to hit it up this time. I, like you, am not generally a fan of cities, but I did enjoy Chengdu quite a bit. And funnily ( yes, that’s a word! just because) enough, I stayed at Lazybones hostel which is a trio with Mix hostel and Flip Flop, lol. Absolutely loved it and I think it really made my time in chengdu as awesome as it was. I might try Flip flop or Mix this time around though. 🙂

You’re right- Leshan is an awesome small city that deserves an extra day. The street food in the park near the university is killer! I ate far too much there…Great post on Chengdu!

The pandas were the highlight of China for us. They’re just the most amazing thing on Earth.

For people heading to Mount Emei – which we didn’t end up hiking because of the thick cold mist – they should stay at Baoguo Temple. You sleep among the monks, get to be inside the temple when the mist settles in after dark, eat the simple vegan meal with the temple’s inhabitants, and be woken up early by chanting.

They also have WiFi :).

Thanks for the awesome tips about Mount Emei, Jane! I wish we had more time for Leshan now to stay up at that temple.

I also visited the Breeding Centre a number of years ago and every now and then I watch the Panda Live Cam, there is a couple links you can get. Nothing more relaxing than sitting down in the evening and watching the Panda’s

Live cam to the pandas? I wish you hadn’t told us that Louise, haha! I can imagine Lesh spending hours watching them eat bamboo and falling out of trees.

You forgot all about the Chnegdu tea houses 🙂 They were so chilled out, we stayed for hours people watching the locals playing checkers, hanging out, and getting their socializing on! Chengdu was one of our favorites in China 🙂

Of course! Thanks for reminding us about the tea houses, Jenia 🙂

Chengdu: a guide to China’s next hottest destination

Chengdu market China

China is massive, so in spite of how dramatically tourist arrivals have been spiking the past several years, it’s understandable why so many tours of the country stick to the well trodden path: Beijing, Shanghai, and maybe, just maybe, Xi’an!

But I believe you should venture southwestward on your next trip to the Middle Kingdom, and pandas are only one reason why.

To be sure, while Chengdu first earned its place on tourism maps as home to the cutest members of the Ursidae family, its appeal extends far beyond them. Think deliciously spicy cuisine, an eclectic cityscape, and a huge variety of destinations within day-trip distance. Plus, I found Chengdu astonishingly laid-back, which is probably an adjective you never expected to hear in conjunction with the phrase “Chinese city of 14 million.”

Tianfu Square Chengdu China

Tianfu Square

Here’s a little summary of its attractions, uniqueness, food scene, and more.

Peaceful vibes, hidden monasteries

Chengdu feels immediately different from more ubiquitous Chinese cities like Beijing and Shanghai, in spite of the constant haze in the air, and the slim likelihood of finding someone outside of your hotel who speaks fluent English. Here, there’s a relaxed skip in people’s step, and in spite of the rapidly increasing number of tall buildings, the rustling of gingko leaves seems to capture your attention more than any combination of steel and stone.

Wenshu Monastery Chengdu China

Wenshu Monastery

Which is not to say Chengdu’s manmade treasures aren’t as enjoyable as its natural ones, or that there isn’t tangible awesomeness here to match the delightful energy that surrounds you as you explore.

If you want to step back in time, for example, head just northward from Chengdu’s central Tianfu Square (ironically, just past the Mao Zedong statue) to Wenshu Monastery, the best-preserved one in the city that’s also remarkably well-hidden within a residential neighborhood.

SUBSCRIBE TO INTREPID’S NEWSLETTER FOR MORE TRAVEL GUIDES, COMPETITIONS, GIVEAWAYS & MORE

Jin Li Street’s newfound popularity makes it feel less hidden then Wenshu, although I did manage to shoot some mysterious-looking tripod selfies amid its colorful “wishing bags.”

Jin Li wishing bags

Further north, Tianfu Square is slightly less well-known, and sits adjacent to lush People’s Park, whose modern design (not surprisingly, given its name) dates back to the beginning of the Communist period, but whose origins date back to the days of the Qing Dynasty.

If you’re looking for more upscale urban scenery, head to the designer shops of Taikoo Li, which sits right down the Jinjiang River from the iconic Sichuan TV Tower, and just upstream from picturesque Anshun Bridge.

Up-close and personal with pandas

Pandas are native to Sichuan province (which surrounds Chengdu) and have long been the city’s most famous attraction, not to mention its cutest. The best place to see pandas near Chengdu is Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, not only because it’s a short journey from the city center, but because it’s a scientific research facility purpose-built to help ensure the future survival of pandas.

The photo opportunities here are truly endless, as you might expect.

Otherwise, your panda options in Chengdu are limited. The 2008 Sichuan earthquake damaged much of the pandas’ remaining natural habitat (which, to be fair, had been waning for decades as it was).

American and Chinese restaurants have been serving up “Szechuan Chicken” entrées for as far back as anyone can remember. Many of Sichuan’s most famous dishes will sound familiar to your Western ears, from Gong Bao Ji Ding (also known as Kung Pao Chicken) to Ma Po Tofu. Yes, there’s a reason there’s so many Sichuan restaurants are so popular in the West. The UNESCO City of Gastronomy and capital city of the Sichuan Province is in a class of its own.

The best thing about eating in Chengdu is the hole-in-the-walls crowded with locals. (Love Chinese food? Check out our guide to traditional street food there!)

Don’t miss dine-and-dash favorites like spicy, savory Dan Dan Noodles, but also consider treating yourself to one of the most sumptuous meals in the world: the 33-course extravaganza at Yu’s Family Kitchen, which features both Sichuan specialties and pan-Chinese classics like Peking Duck.

Exploring Jinli Street, famous for its historic atmosphere and local snacks, is a must. Enjoy sticky rice cakes with sesame sauce, spicy chicken on a stick, sweet rice jelly, fried beef pancakes and, for the more adventurous, spicy rabbits heads.

And ensure you sample hot pot, also. One of the country’s most renowned dishes, and roughly translating to ‘fire pot’, the communal pot of spiced broth that you dip your choice of ingredients into, is quite the (delicious and spicy) experience.

Gateway to the (South)west

You could spend a week (or more!) just within Chengdu’s city limits, but what sits just beyond Chengdu is at least as awesome, especially given the rapid expansion of China’s high-speed rail network. Take a day trip to the awe-inspiring Leshan Giant Buddha or scale the summits of Emei Shan and Mount Qingcheng, which is known as the birthplace of Taoism.

Chengdu is also a great precursor to Chongqing, an even less-discovered city that was also part of Sichuan province before its population exploded to more than 40 million.

Indeed, an entire world waits for you the moment you come through customs at Chengdu International Airport. Break out of the usual China travel bubble (and maybe, a little bit outside your comfort zone) and you’ll discover new cuisine, laid-back charm, lovely parks, and so much more.

(And, yes, pandas.)

Chengdu travel blog – top things to do in chengdu china.

I’ve said it before, and I will say it again. Before going to Chengdu, China , I had no idea what there would be to do in Chengdu. I associated Chengdu with pandas , spicy Sichuan food , and nothing more. I was about spending all my time in Chengdu eating Sichuan noodles but figured it was worth it to research what to do in Chengdu. I was stunned to learn just how many unusual things to do in Chengdu there really are.

In this Chengdu Travel Blog, we will not only share the top things to do in Chengdu China but also share some travel tips about Chengdu and how to plan your Chengdu itinerary. This includes recommendations for a few day trips from Chengdu as well.

What To Do In Chengdu China

Where to stay in chengdu china.

We stayed at Niccolo Chengdu , and loved it! We also have some other recommended Chengdu hotels in the center of the city when you visit Chengdu. I would recommend staying in the city center, in the Jin Jiang district, near the IFS shopping area. There is a train station to get you around the city. Plus, it’s really easy to find great food, shopping, Chengdu nightlife in this part of town. All of our Chengdu hotel recommendations are in this area.

Chengdu Panda Tour - Chengdu Attractions

There are several ways to see the pandas in Chengdu . It’s possible to book a Chengdu panda tour. And some of the panda parks are only thirty minutes outside of Chengdu. We figured that this could be our only trip to hang with the pandas in Chengdu, and we wanted to make the most of it. We wanted to get up close and personal, and we did.

We arranged a day as volunteers with the Dujiangyan panda base, about 90 minutes outside of Chengdu, towards the Chengdu mountains. It was a full day program, cost $100 a person plus transportation, and was well worth it. We got right up close to the pandas and had a much more interactive experience than some of the other panda centers. Let’s just say the pandas should be on any China itinerary !

Check out our YouTube Video, a Chengdu Guide – What to do and eat:

Day Trip to the Leshan Giant Buddha

Leshan Giant Buddha - Day Trip From Chengdu

Our friend who recently traveled to Chengdu told us about the Leshan Giant Buddha. He warned it was a full day trip from Chengdu, but well worth it. He was right. Once we arrived we realized we had seen this giant Buddha on a travel TV show and it is one of the top Chengdu attractions, even though it is outside of the city. It’s over 70 meters high, or 233 feet tall, and is carved out of the mountainside.

The Leshan Buddha Experience

We entered from the top of the mountain, walked all the way down to the feet of the Buddha, and, yes, walked all the way back up. All well worth it, even in the summer heat. We’ve never seen a Buddha like this before. Definitely, a top attraction in Chengdu, even if technically outside of Chengdu. The entrance to the Leshan Giant Buddha costs about $10. The hotel arranged for a car to drive the four of us out and back, offered an English speaking guide, and prepared a packaged lunch for us to eat in Leshan.

It was nice getting back into an air-conditioned vehicle to drive us back after the Buddha trek. Chengdu sightseeing in the summer can be tiring. We all promptly passed out, after snacking on our luxury lunch box, which included fresh tomato and basil salads and sandwiches. The total for everything was approximately $300 (transport, English guide, tickets, and lunch for four people), which is not too bad considering the trip takes two hours each way.

Chengdu Food Tour

Chengdu Food Tour - Best Things To Do In Chengdu

We’ve been on food tours all over Asia and Europe. They can be a great way to see a city while eating loads of typical local dishes. The folks over at Lost Plate food tours  took the experience to a whole new level. Not only did we zoom around the city on tuk-tuks, but we climbed through the window to get to one of the restaurants, and finished the night at a bar on the 21st floor of a high rise building overlooking the city. It gave an inside peek into Chengdu nightlife and Chengdu street food.

Our tour guide, Ella, was fabulous, energetic, and knowledgable, making sure we had a great experience. I cannot recommend the Lost Plate food tour enough. It has to be one of the best Chengdu tours.

with husband in tow

Chengdu Pro Travel Tip :

The Lost Plate Chengdu Food Tour runs daily at 7 pm, and can be booked for $50 on their website. Pricing is based on two people and includes the private tuk-tuk ride, a pick up from centrally located hotels, and four to five stops. They also include unlimited cans of beer!

People’s Park for Tea and Ear Cleaning

unusual to do in Chengdu

This is why we watch travel shows to do our research. First, we saw the Leshan Giant Buddha on a travel show. It is also where we learned about Chinese ear cleaning. An ear cleaning expert (hopefully) comes to the table with long metal sticks and pokes around in your ear for a bit. What could be more fun than that? Or more dangerous?

I passed on the experience, but Eric, and our friend, Evo, sat down at People’s Park to see who had the dirtiest ears. Although the verdict is still out on that, it was a once in a lifetime experience, and a reason to visit Chengdu. And, we enjoyed a lovely pot of local tea while enjoying the festivities.

Chengdu Travel Tip : People’s Park in Chengdu is easily accessible by the Metro at the People’s Park Stop on Line 2. There are two tea gardens within the park. We stopped at Chirping Crane tea garden. Menus for both tea and the ear cleaning were provided in English and included pricing. This was great because we didn’t need to haggle on pricing. Tea was about $10 a pot, per person, but you can sit there forever and they continue to refill your water. The ear cleaning and a shoulder massage costs just a little over $10.

Wenshu Monastery

attraction in chengdu

Du Fu Thatched Cottage

Located a little farther west (about twenty minutes drive) is Du Fu Cottage, once home to a famous Chinese poet from the Tang Dynasty. Although the cottage, which dates to the 8th Century, fell into disrepair, it was renovated over time. It is now a museum to the poet and hosts a beautiful commemorative garden. Tickets cost about $8.

Afternoon Tea

Things locals do in Chengdu

There is just something about dressing up a bit, walking through the lobby of a fancy hotel, and sitting back for a luxurious afternoon tea. And, when most of the day is spent eating spicy food, an afternoon tea is also a perfect respite for the palate.  The Tea Lounge at Niccolo Chengdu  also serves as the hotel lobby. With huge windows on three sides and stunning artwork adorning the ceiling, it is the perfect place for afternoon tea in the middle of the Chengdu shopping district.

A tower of sandwiches and sweet treats arrived, along with someone to prepare each of our teas. She walked us through the tea menu to determine which tea would be right for each of us. She poured our tea, would disappear, and quietly reappear again just as we were in need of more tea.

Afternoon tea at the Tea Lounge at Niccolo Chengdu costs about $28 per couple. Tea is extra though, as they have an amazing tea selection, which starts around $10 per pot. The Tea Lounge is located just outside of the IFS shopping mall.

Eating on Jin Li Street

Chengdu Street Food on Jin Li Street

Jin Li ancient street is one of the top Chengdu tourist attractions. What was once a small alleyway has now been transformed into a shopping and dining destination. Coming in through the main entrance, tourists are greeted by loads of shops. When the road splits in two, take the left road in order to find all of the Sichuan street food. Although there is some food to the right, the left is where all the goodies are. It was one of the most fun places to eat in Chengdu.

Eating Hot Pot in Chengdu - things locals do in Chengdu

Hotpot is probably one of the most quintessential Sichuan eating experiences. It’s not hard to find hot pot in Chengdu. In fact, it might be more difficult to find a restaurant that DOESN’T serve Sichuan hot pot. It seems almost every Chengdu restaurant will offer hot pot.  There are several ways to eat hot pot in Chengdu. The very traditional way is to have a giant vat of boiling hot broth in the middle of the table. People place different proteins and vegetables inside to cook. Hotpot is, essentially, Chinese fondue. It can get messy.

Shopping at Taikoo Li

Shopping at Taikoo Li - attractions in Chengdu

Taikoo Li is an enormous shopping, dining, and entertainment complex in the heart of Chengdu. Located just across the street from the IFS shopping mall, Taikoo Li is anchored by Channel and Hermes, just to name a few big brands, as well as some Chengdu bars and restaurants.

What makes Taikoo Li unique is that the entire complex is built around an ancient Chinese temple, Daci Temple. The Buddhist temple still stands, complete with a big, smiling Buddha. And, the shops and restaurants were built in a similar architectural style as well. It is unlike the big modern malls that are sprouting up across China.

Shopping at IFS

Chengdu Sightseeing - Shopping at IFS

Chengdu Nightlife

Chengdu nightlife and cocktails

The one thing I found a little odd about the area surrounding IFS Chengdu was the lack of places to grab a drink. Drinking is not as much in the Chinese culture as it is in places like Vietnam, where beer is sold almost everywhere . As we circled the pedestrian-friendly blocks around IFS Chengdu it became clear that proper drinking had to be done at one of the nearby, elegant Chengdu hotel bars. The Bar at Niccolo Chengdu was the perfect place. Not only do they have an outdoor patio, which is lovely in the evening, but their bartenders make some mean cocktails too. They made us bellinis with fresh, local peaches, and a proper Old Fashioned as well.

For more nightlife options, check out Lan Kwai Fong Chengdu , a strip of bars in the southeast end of the city. Try the Hakka Bar or Jah Bar. This is definitely an area for the young or the young at heart. Closer to the center of the city there are some other cocktails bars to try, like the one at the Temple House hotel.

FAQs – Chengdu Tourism

chengdu tourism

When arriving during the day, you can take the Chengdu metro into the city center. If arriving at night, particularly after 11:30 pm, it’s best to take an airport shuttle bus from the airport arrivals gate or a taxi. If you think you might take a taxi, try printing out the name and address of your hotel in English and Chinese (or have it saved to your mobile phone). They might not use the meter, so try, if you can, to arrange the price ahead of time. It should be between 50-100 Yuan ($8-15).

The Chengdu metro is pretty easy to take. Signs are in English and prices are cheap. The metro closes before midnight. Also, if you arrive in Chengdu by train, you should be able to take the metro to your hotel. Buses are even cheaper but is not as accessible to travelers because everything is in Chinese. Taxis are pretty efficient, but most drivers don’t speak English, so have your hotel help you out. Carry a card from your hotel that includes the name and address in Chinese and English.

The temperature varies throughout the year. The best time to visit is in the spring or fall. The summers can be hot and the winters chilly. Try to plan your Chengdu itinerary in the shoulder seasons for a better trip.

Hi! Thanks for your blog. Very informative. I’d like to know when was your trip, since I’ve been looking to do an up close contact tour with pandas or volunteer and apparently that’s not on anymore in 2019. Then I saw other websites that say they still do it for like 400$… a bit crazy. Could you add some details about how did you book it and when it was? Thank you

Thanks for the question. We were in Chengdu a couple of years ago, but I just researched and updated this post on the pandas ( https://www.withhusbandintow.com/chengdu-panda-tour-panda-volunteer/ ) which has everything you need on the current status and shows which tours offer panda holding, etc. Generally to do the panda holding the cost is around $400 a person.

Chengdu Travel Guide

Welcome to chengdu.

Have you heard of Chengdu? Not as well-known as bigger cities like Shanghai, Chengdu is nonetheless a popular travel destination for good reason. It has amazing spicy food, beautiful natural surroundings, a high quality of life, and lots of pandas.

  • Things to do
  • Where to eat
  • Where to stay
  • Around Chengdu

Located in Sichuan province, the greater Chengdu area is home to a staggering 14 million residents.

It’s surrounded by rich farmlands that have led to the city’s impressive agricultural wealth. Often called the ‘Land of Milk and Honey’, the Chengdu metropolis is one of the most liveable cities in China.

As well as being known for its panda tourism and spicy food, Chengdu has a great atmosphere. The city is famously laid-back and relaxed despite its size and busyness. This more relaxed way of life may be one of the most attractive things about Chengdu.

Panda in Chengdu

Chengdu is famous for its pandas. Image supplied by Mike Cairnduff.

Chengdu is panda central

Chengdu is most famous for its panda population and almost everything in the city reflects that natural connection.

All around the city you’ll find panda shoes, purses, hats, and giant panda buses that transport people around the city.

Chengdu is home to several panda breeding and research facilities, which probably explains its close connection with this lovable animal.

So, while you’re in the city, make sure you head out to one of them to see the panda places and maybe even sign up to be a zookeeper for the day.

The Chengdu tourist experience

Chengdu is open and welcoming to tourists.

This is part of the city’s laid-back culture, but it doesn’t mean that travel around the city is always easy. There isn’t a lot of English in Chengdu, so you should never expect the locals to speak it. The signs and menus are also usually in Chinese.

This lack of English isn’t as difficult to navigate as you might think. Just make sure you always have your destination in Chinese characters on your phone. Also have your hotel name handy, in case you get lost.

With the help of a Chinese map app , you can use your phone to work out where you are and the best way to get where you’re going.

Things to see and do around Chengdu

Chengdu is a city of steel and skyscrapers, without a lot of historic or beautiful buildings.

But it makes up for that with a lot of natural attractions that are more amazing than anything man-made could be.

1. See giant pandas

Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding and Research Base

You can’t visit Chengdu without seeing the giant pandas. Fortunately, there are lots of places where you can see pandas and their cubs. You can even volunteer to get up close and personal with them through a zookeeper or volunteer program.

Some of the best places to see pandas are:

  • Giant Panda Breeding and Research Base – the big one, often with baby pandas
  • Dujiangyan Panda Base – good for volunteering
  • Wolong Panda Research Center – enjoy a night tour with less tourists.

2. Be part of Chengdu’s teahouse culture

Chengdu is famously laid-back, and its teahouse culture is a big part of that. Teahouses are where the locals congregate, play mah-jong, and drink cup after cup of hot tea.

If you want to be part of the local culture, then escape the busy city the same way the locals do. Head to one of the local teahouses and try some brews.

3. Eat Sichuan food

Chengdu hot pot

Hot pot is commonly eaten in Chengdu. Image by Leacky Chen on Pixabay.

Every part of China has different food and food traditions, and Sichuan province is no different. It’s known for its spicy food, so be prepared to have your tolerance for hot food increased during your trip.

While you’re in Chengdu, here are some dishes that you should try:

  • Spicy hot pot
  • Spicy chicken on a stick
  • Rabbit fried with peppers
  • Dan Dan noodles .

In Chengdu, the best restaurants aren’t usually on the tourist trail. You’ll need to find the places where the locals eat and there usually won’t be menus or signs in English to help.

Take a tour if you need to or ask any local who speaks English where they eat and don’t be afraid to take some chances.

4. Explore the Chengdu Wuhou Shrine

One of the oldest temples in Chengdu, this shrine dates back to 302 AD and is a vast temple structure with a lot to see and admire.

It’s located about 20 minutes out of the city and is a great side trip if you’re interested in history or architecture.

5. See the Leshan Giant Buddha

Leshan Giant Buddha

The Giant Buddha is imposing in person. Image supplied by Mike Cairnduff.

A world heritage site, the spectacular Leshan Giant Buddha is 71 meters high and carved into rock. Just under two hours outside of Chengdu, this sculpture was started by a Buddhist monk in AD 713 and completed in 803 by fellow monks after his death.

Crowds can be pretty intense, so if you’re not fussed climbing the famous staircase in front of the Buddha, just pay a few dollars for a boat ride. It stops right out the front so you can take some amazing photos.

From Chengdu, catch a bullet train to Leshan and then a connecting tourist bus from the station. If that’s too much for you to handle, take a tour out there with a guide – many hotels and even hostels arrange them with accommodation pick-up and drop-off included.

6. Visit the Home of Du Fu

Du Fu is one of China’s best-known poets and you can see a recreation of his home that honors his memory in Chengdu. Du Fu lived between AD 759 and 763 and the recreation is a sprawling complex of beautiful gardens, bridges and serene waterways.

This attraction is a peaceful sanctuary in the middle of the city, and you can also learn more about Du Fu’s life at the Gong Bu Memorial Hall.

7. Watch Sichuan Opera

Sichuan Opera performance

A Sichuan Opera performance. Image supplied by Mike Cairnduff.

The Shufeng Sichuan Opera House puts on regular performances of traditional Chinese music and theater. This is a not-to-be-missed experience while you’re in Chengdu!

You’ll get the chance to see ‘Bian Lian’, where the performers wear brightly colored masks and seem to swap faces with the flick of a fan. It’s really amazing.

While you’re there, make sure you spend some time in the surrounding Chengdu Cultural Park. The park is most famous for its Taoist Qingyang Temple, a remarkable example of traditional Chinese architecture.

8. Explore the historic alleys

If you just like to wander and explore when you travel, then why not do it in the most historic alleyways in Chengdu?

Located in the city’s old quarters, the Kuan, Zhai, and Jing Xiangzi alleys are narrow and heavy with the weight of the past. The alleys date back to the 17th century but have been recently renovated to reflect their former glory.

As you explore, you’ll find restaurants, beautiful public courtyards, traditional tea houses and stores. Also, don’t forget to check out the religious sites along the way like the Daci Temple and Wenshu Monastery.

The best food markets in Chengdu

Markets are usually amazing places to eat in China, and the ones in Chengdu are no different.

The food is fresh and tasty, and the atmosphere is always interesting, adding a touch of fun to your meal.

Jinli Food Street 锦里街

Jinli Food Street, also known as Pedestrian Street, has the best local food and snacks in the city. You can wander up and down through this street buying snacks from different stalls and the food will be cheap and delicious. There’s also some great entertainment in the street in the form of plays, music, and traditional events.

Yangxixian Food Street 羊西线

This is the most popular food street in Chengdu. If you’re a  vegan , then you might have trouble finding an appropriate snack, but if you’re a meat eater then you’ll be in heaven. The food here is Muslim, reasonably priced, and absolutely delicious.

Yuling Living Square

The best places to eat in China are usually the local places, and that’s exactly what this street is. It’s where the locals congregate to eat, drink, and have fun at night. This street is full of bars, restaurants, and  snack carts , and it has a great energy too it that’s contagious.

Where to stay in Chengdu

Chengdu has a range of modern and more traditional accommodation options.

Just make sure that you choose which is right for you, as more traditional accommodations can be a shock to Western travelers.

The Mrs Panda Hostel is conveniently located near a Metro station and walking distance to the airport shuttle bus. It’s also a stone’s throw from the main shopping area and bar street.

This makes travel convenient and will make it easy for you to find fun things to do and see. The hostel is clean, affordable, and highly rated.

If you’re heading to beautiful Mt Emei, stay at Teddy Bear Hotel for the great location and teddy bear themed rooms!

Decorated in traditional Chinese style, the Wenjun Courtyard Hotel is simply stunning.

It’s also five minutes’ walk from the train station and close to popular tourist spots like Tianfu Square, Qingyang Temple, and the Kuanzhai Alleys.

The Hilton Chengdu is the best place to stay in the city if you have a little extra money to spend and like some luxury.

It’s reasonably priced for a 5-star hotel and offers a hot tub, sauna, fitness center, and spacious rooms. It’s also close to the train station as well as local restaurants.

Transport in Chengdu

Like most of China, Chengdu benefits from fast, cheap, and modern transport options.

And you will enjoy their convenience when you’re traveling in Chengdu.

Air transport

Chengdu’s Shuangliu International Airport (CTU) is one of the busiest airports in the county. It’s to the southwest of the city and offers flights to cities all around China and to a number of international cities as well. This makes Chengdu a good base for exploring the rest of the country.

High speed rail

Chengdu is the largest railway hub in southwest China, so the trains are fast, convenient, and go almost everywhere. Just remember that the people at the station may not speak English, so you will have to have your destination name in Chinese to buy your ticket. Remember to have your passport handy too – you can’t travel on bullet trains without it.

Long distance bus

You can also use Chengdu’s long distance bus system to explore outside the city, though most buses stay inside Sichuan province. There are several coach stations throughout the city. You’re more likely to get help in English at the train station – long-distance buses in China are for the adventurous.

Chengdu transport

There are plenty of transport options in Chengdu. Image supplied by Mike Cairnduff.

The metro is one of the best ways to get around inside of Chengdu as it goes almost everywhere and is very cost-effective. The security is a little stricter than you’re probably used to, and you may need to have your bags scanned before you get on the train.

Public buses

Public buses are another good way to explore Chengdu and will take you to most of the big sights. Most routes run every half hour or more frequently, but they can be a little confusing, so make sure you know where you’re going. Have your Chinese map app handy.

Most buses in the urban area cost 1 CNY, though buses with air conditioning often cost 2 CNY. You will need to have exact change for the buses.

Sightseeing bus

If you want to see the main sites, then hop on the sightseeing bus. The sightseeing bus runs between two appointed spots without stops and the tickets are sold with the entry ticket to the attraction. Makes life easier!

You can hail a taxi at any time in Chengdu. Just make sure that you have the name of your destination in Chinese on your phone as the driver probably won’t speak much English. Make sure that the driver uses the meter and if you’re heading outside of the city, look up how much it will cost beforehand and be ready to barter.

A gateway to amazing places

One of the best things about traveling to Chengdu is its proximity to other amazing places that you can explore.

Whether you want to see natural scenery or historic attractions, you’ll be able to pick between some great options.

Visit the Mengdingshan Tea Plantation

Tea is incredibly popular in China and has been for years, so you should find out what it’s all about while you’re in the country. Mengdingshan is one of the oldest tea-growing areas in China and is located just two hours away from Chengdu.

While you’re there, you’ll be treated to beautiful scenery and learn about the culture and traditions of tea. Take a tour if you want to learn even more about this ancient tradition.

The highest peak of the mountain is known as the Peak of the Ten Thousand Buddhas and is considered to be one of the four Holy Mountains in China.

This is a longer day trip but well worth the extra effort. Located around 186 miles from Chengdu, the pass is a popular spot for tours.

Known as the ‘Sword Gate Pass’ in English, the gate that once protected the road during the Ming Dynasty and beyond has recently been reconstructed. It’s a truly stunning sight against the steep slopes of the pass.

There are also several important historical sites nearby that are worth seeing.

Go further afield

If you’ve ever wanted to visit Tibet, then Chengdu is the perfect place to start.

The city is located on the eastern side of the Tibetan Plateau and offers a relatively easy trip into the ancient kingdom by plane or bullet train.

You can also use Chengdu as a base to explore West Sichuan, one of the most naturally and dramatically beautiful places in all of China.

Chengdu is in fact a mega provincial capital of Sichuan Province and an economic powerhouse of southwestern China . Moreover, the city’s abundance of cultural and historical sights, together with its laidback lifestyle, make Chengdu one of the most attractive and livable large cities too.

Travel to China

Known in China as the "Land of Milk and Honey", Chengdu is blessed with fertile land and plenty of water. Located in central Sichuan, it is one of the country's leading rice and wheat-growing regions. Historically, Chengdu was first settled 2400 years ago, through the centuries it transformed itself into the political and cultural center of southwest China. On top of the economic significance, Chengdu also has a long history of scholarly accomplishments, with some of China's most crucial historical literature coming from there. Today the city is still a highly academic city with numerous top-rated universities and scientific research centers.

2024 Chengdu Travel Guide - Best Things to do in Chengdu

With a total population of over 16 million, around 9 million reside in the Chengdu metro area. There are 11 urban districts and Qingyang District is considered as the city center with attractions like Whenshu Yuan Temple and Tianfu Square. The neighboring Wuhou District is a mix of historic sites and busy commercial centers like Jinli Old Street and Temple.

From ancient temples to stunning natural wonders, mesmerizing folk performances to addictive culinary creations, Chengdu is one of China’s top ten tourist destinations. There are so many breathtaking scenic spots on offer, it will take a few days to just tick off the top sites. For visitors looking for those unforgettable experiences, consider drinking tea with locals at People’s Park, hunt for souvenirs at Jinli Old Street, be entertained by Sichuan opera, test your spice tolerance with Chengdu Hot Pot, and last not least, feed a panda in the Giant Panda Base, etc.

Chengdu is the economic and transportation hub of the region, so currently there are two major airports serving the city - Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport and Chengdu Tianfu International Airport. Convenient airport to downtown transfer options are available at both locations, such as airport shuttle, the metro, and taxis. Getting around town is also simple and convenient, as there are 12 metro lines to take you around town and stations have bilingual signs, maps, and ticket machines. Going between tourist attractions, sightseeing buses offer easy transportation.

When you are visiting a destination for the first time, there are so many things that can make or break a trip, including the season you visit. The best times for Chengdu are Spring and Fall as the weather is most pleasant with limited rainfall. If you are visiting in Summer, it can be rather hot with regular rainfall, plus it is a peak tourist season hence it can be very crowded.

Choosing the right accommodation is not always easy for a first-time visitor, check out these popular areas for your consideration. Staying in Chengdu city center (e.g. Tianfu Square) will surround you with top sites like Wide and Narrow Alley and Whenshu Yuan Temple.

For history buffs and luxury travelers, Wuhou District offers Jinli Old Street, Wuhou Temple as well as many modern malls, restaurants, and premier hotels.

Navigating a new city using public transports can be challenging, here are some useful tips and general practices. Traveling on the Chengdu Metro, signage, information, and ticket machine are in English and Chinese. When using the automated ticket machine, only use 1 RMB coin and 5-20 RMB notes. Remember to download the most up-to-date Metro map when traveling as new lines and stations are opening regularly.

For first-time foodies to the city, Chengdu is the best place for authentic Sichuan cuisine which is famed for its spicy and numbing tastes. See if you can handle local favorites like Cold Chicken in Chili Oil, Dan Dan Noodle, and Sichuan Hot Pot. Want to bring home some souvenirs? Chengdu is full of high-end retail centers (e.g. New Century Global Center) and lively street markets (e.g. Jinli Old Street) where visitors pick up local products like Chengdu silk brocade, Giant Panda products, and Chengdu hotpot seasonings.

As a major gateway to southwest China, Chengdu is the economic and transportation hub of the region. With millions of tourists visiting the city each year, there are now two large-size international airports serving Chengdu and its surrounding areas. First is the well-established Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport (CTU), located about 16 kilometers (10 miles) from the city center. It has flights to more than 220 domestic and 130 international destinations.

Travel between Shuangliu airport & downtown Chengdu couldn’t be easier. The Airport Shuttle is a budget-friendly option with 6 lines (3 regular and 3 night-times) connecting the airport to city locations such as Chengdu North and East Railway Stations, Wuhou Temple, and Tianfu Square. Fares start at 10 RMB. Alternatively, the Metro is also available via Metro Line 10 at both T1 & T2. There are detailed English signs at the airport to direct you to the airport metro station. Fares cost 4 RMB per person. For the fastest option, visitors can pick up a taxi from official taxi stands, outside T1’s Gate No.2 of Arrivals Hall and outside T2’s Gate No.4 and 5 of Arrivals Hall. Traffic permitting, a one-way trip to downtown should cost about 120 yuan.

Since June 2021, a brand new airport has opened in Chengdu - Chengdu Tianfu International Airport (TFU). Comparatively farther than CTU, it is 51 kilometers (32 miles) southeast of the city center. It is a major base from Air China and has two terminals also. For transfer options, currently, Metro Line 18 will take passengers from TFU to Chengdu South Railway Station, and from there you can change to Metro Line 1 and Line 7 for many popular downtown sites. Airport Shuttle and taxi options are also available.

With a developed transportation network, visitors can effortlessly travel around Chengdu’s many popular attractions with options like city buses, taxis, and the metro, etc.

At present, there are around 12 metro lines in operation, and additional lines are planned for the future. Worried about the language? Stations have bilingual signs, maps, and ticket machines. With plans to open more lines, it is recommended to download the most up-to-date Metro map when traveling. Fare starts at 2 RMB and will increase with distance traveled. If you plan to travel frequently by metro or bus, it’s worth buying a rechargeable Tianfu Tong Ka for discounted prices (kiosks can be found at the airport and major metro stations).

Visitors can also use both public city buses and sightseeing buses to explore Chengdu. While city buses reach all corners of the city, navigate it can be difficult for non-Chinese travelers, even when stops are marked in Chinese and English. If you are only going from one attraction to the next, sightseeing buses may be more convenient and cost-effective. Tickets to destinations are located near many tourist sites like Tianfu Square, Wide and Narrow Alley, and Wuhou Temple. Fares vary greatly depending on your destination and the type of ticket.

Other ways to get around town include flagging down an official taxi with fares starting at 8-12 RMB depending on the car model. It is worth noting that it is common practice for taxi drivers to not use the taximeter when departing from railway stations or long-distance bus stations. In this case, negotiate a flat rate before setting off.

Chengdu has a subtropical monsoon climate which means four distinct seasons with hot and humid summers, and cold and damp winters. The best times to travel to Chengdu are Spring (March to June) and Fall (September to November). In Spring, the city comes alive with refreshing spring colors. September to November has the most comfortable temperatures and no rain showers. While Summer (July and August) is the peak tourist season but expect regular rainfall and an average high temperature of 30 °C (85 °F). Winter in Chengdu is between December and February, the average low temperature is 2 °C (36 °F) with the coldest month being January. This is a low season for the city as the weather tends to be cold and damp, with some rainfall.

Chengdu is a city with rich cultural experiences in the city and plentiful natural sceneries nearby. With so many well-deserving attractions to choose from, here are three top picks that should not be missed.

First on most people’s must-see list has got to be the giant pandas. Located just 10 km (6 miles) from downtown, the world-famous Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding (or Chengdu Panda Base) has been rescuing and breeding the endangered giant panda since 1987. Here visitors can observe the giant pandas in their natural habitat and learn about this fascinating animal at the on-site museum.

Next up is the historic Wenshu Monastery (Manjushri Monastery) which was built in 1691. It stands on the ruins of one of the oldest monasteries in the rule of the Southern Dynasties. Architecture buffs will appreciate the traditional Chinese-style buildings on the complex including the Hall of Shuofa Tang - home to the ten Buddhist guardian god’s statues, the Thousand Buddha Pagoda, and the Wenshu Monastery Library.

Chengdu is surrounded by numerous stunning day-trip locations and one visit-worthy place is the magnificent Leshan Giant Buddha. This famous colossal sculpture is 71 meters (233 feet) in height and is the largest sculpture of Buddha in the world. This site attracts millions of visitors and pilgrims every year from far and wide. Situated about 162 kilometers (100 miles) from Chengdu, visitors can easily reach this site via the bullet train, bus, or with a tour group. By train, first take the subway to Tianfu Square and then to Chengdu East Railway Station for trains to Leshan Railway Station. From there, take a local public bus like Bus 3 or a taxi to the Giant Buddha Scenic Area.

Known for its spicy, numbing, and umami-tasting natures, the food in Chengdu belongs to Sichuan cuisine - one of the eight culinary cuisines of China. The food is so unique and legendary that UNESCO honored it as its first-ever City of Gastronomy.

Visitors wanting to sample these mouth washing Chengdu dishes should first try the fiery Sichuan Hot Pot. While the hot pot is a national favorite, the version served in Chengdu is numbingly spicy with sliced meat, offal, vegetables, and most importantly, Sichuan peppercorns. Both Chengdu Huangcheng Laoma and Lao Ma Tou are good choices for this addictive local good-eat.

If the local spice level suits you just fine, then try the Cold Chicken in Chili Oil, a popular cold appetizer dish that perfectly combines spicy with mala or numbing flavor of Sichuan cuisine. This simply boiled chicken dish has an intense sauce that tastes hot, sweet, savory, and sour.

For anyone who prefers non-spicy food, Twice Cooked Pork is the dish for you. Also a Sichuan delicacy where pork pieces are cooked in two different ways, first by simmering (then cooled), and second by stir-frying (with various vegetables). You can try this delectable dish at Yu’s Family Kitchen and Chen Mapo Tofu Restaurant.

2024 Chengdu Travel Guide - Best Things to do in Chengdu

Chengdu is not only famous for its delicious cuisine and world-class attractions, but it is also a paradise for shopping lovers. The megacity has a wide range of souvenirs, produce, and memorabilia to satisfy your every need. By far the most popular buy for tourists is Chengdu brocade (silk). These delicate embroideries are used to embellish quit covers, clothing, and tapestries. Other items that also make great gifts are Giant Panda products, Tibetan-style ornaments, tea and tea sets, and Chengdu hotpot seasonings.

Where are the best places to buy these local goodies? If visitors are interested in getting Tibetan-style ornaments and handicrafts, one should head to the road on the opposite side of Wuhou Temple. Tourists can find top-quality Chengdu Brocade at Hongqi store or Shujiang Jinyuan near the Du Fu Thatched Cottage.

In terms of popular shopping areas in Chengdu, first up is Chunxi Road - a famous pedestrian street with many department stores, shopping malls, and supermarkets. Jinli Old Street near Wuhou Temple is one of the oldest shopping streets not just in Chengdu but in Sichuan Province. This is a great place for shopping, local food, folk music, and performance, etc.

Compared to other urban areas of similar size, Chengdu is considered generally safe. But visitors should stay vigilant as petty crimes do occur regularly, especially on public transportations and crowded tourist spots. In the northern sector of the city (near the train station) and during late night hours, the rate of crime is higher. For emergencies, dial 110 for police (or find a patrolling officer in tourist destinations) and 120 for ambulance services.

The official currency used in China is Renminbi (RMB) which is also known as Yuan. While tipping is not customary in China, it is acceptable to leave a gratuity for guides, drivers, and hotel porters.

20 EPIC Things To Do In Chengdu – A complete guide

Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan province in China and a rising tourist attraction for foreigners. Although most of the people visit it to see the cutest animals on this planet – the pandas, Chengdu has much more to offer. From its incredible architecture to its delicious Sichuan cuisine, Chengdu should definitely be on your travel list when visiting China.

After spending one week in Chengdu, I completely fell in love with it. In this article I will share with you the top 20 tourist attractions in Chengdu but before that, let’s talk a bit about when is the best time to visit this city.

Chengdu traditional architecture

When is the best time to visit Chengdu

Summers in Chengdu can be extremely hot while winters are very cold. I have visited Chengdu at the beginning of December and it was freezing cold. We had to buy extra jackets to face the temperatures. Also, most of the restaurants and shops do not have heating systems so if you’re traveling during winter, be prepared to face the cold.

Even though the weather was not friendly at all, I still loved Chengdu a lot so don’t get discouraged by the forecast. However, if you want to stay on the safe side, the best time to visit Chengdu is during spring and autumn. For more details about the weather in Chengdu, click here .

Now let’s get to the most interesting part and talk about the must see places in Chengdu.

No time to read now? Pin it for later!

Top things to do in Chengdu, China

20 must see Chengdu tourist attractions

1. be impressed at the sichuan opera.

You can’t go to Chengdu without attending the Sichuan Opera . Unlike western operas, where you have to dress fancy, here at the Sichuan Opera the atmosphere is a bit more relaxed. People are sitting on bamboo chairs and between every 2 chairs there is a table for tea and sunflower seeds. Yes, that’s right – you can eat sunflower seeds at the opera.

Book your ticket here.

Sichuan Opera Chengdu performance

The Sichuan Opera consists of several acts: people dancing and singing in traditional costumes, people playing instruments, theater and even shadow puppetry. I loved the opera so much that the two hours felt like ten minutes. Going to the Sichuan Opera is definitely one of the top things to do in Chengdu and an unforgettable experience at the same time.

2. Visit Tianfu Square

One of the places to visit in Chengdu is Tianfu Square. Some say that if you haven’t been to this square, you didn’t even visit Chengdu. This huge place, surrounded by tall skyscrapers is situated in the heart of the city.

Tianfu Square is the largest square in southwest China and, seen from above it has the shape of a giant yin yang. In the Chinese culture, the yin and yang are the representation of how two opposite forces can actually be complementary.

Tianfu Square Chengdu

In the center of Tianfu Square you will find the symbol of Chengdu (the original golden plate can be found at  Jinsha Site Musem ) which is a plate with Golden Sun Bird pattern.

Here you can also find the Sichuan Science and Technology Museum where you can find some of China’s achievements in science and technology. Right in front of the museum stands a marble sculpture of Mao Zedong, waving his hand to visitors.

3. Mingle with the locals at People’s Park

There is no better place to explore and discover the daily life of Chinese people than at the People’s Park in Chengdu . This is the first public park in Chengdu, built in 1911 and today it serves as a place where locals come to relax and make new friends.

People's Park Chengdu colorful boats

The highlight of my visit to People’s Park was drinking tea at the Singing Crane Teahouse. You won’t find many tourists here but this is one of the reasons why I loved this experience so much. What I love about Chinese tea is that it always comes with sunflower seeds – just delicious!

If you want something for your sweet tooth, you can try melted sugar. You will first have to spin a wheel and depending on where it lands, you will get a certain animal or pattern. All this for just 10 CNY.

While walking through the park, you will see people playing Mahjong, singing and even exercising. Elder people gather in groups and exercise on music in the park. If you want, you can join them, like I did. I must say that considering the fact that when I visited it was December, the exercise routine really helped me get warm.

People's Park Chengdu singing performance

The most interesting part of People’s Park is the “Love Wall”. Here, people who are searching for their half are writing a short description of who they are and what they are looking for (height, weight, financial status) in the hope of finding a husband or wife. If you are single, you can try your luck. 🙂

4. Get lost between red walls at Wuhou Shrine

Famous for its red walls, the Wuhou Shrine is perfect for those who are looking for photography places in Chengdu and, at the same time, want to learn more about the Chinese culture.

The temple consists of several buildings, gardens and the famous red walls. If you want to take a photo here, make sure to be at the temple early in the morning (the temple opens at 8 am). The temple gets pretty busy later in the day.

Wuhou Shrine red walls Chengdu

Wuhou Shrine is dedicated to Zhuge Liang who was a politician, astronomer and diplomat. Although the original temple was destroyed, it has been rebuilt according to the original blueprints. The current temple was built in 1672 and is one of the most scenic spots in Chengdu.

While visiting the Wuhou Shrine, take a short walk and explore the Jinli Street too.

5. Buy some souvenirs at Jinli Street

Jinli Street is one of my favorite places in Chengdu. With many souvenir shops, street food and amazing architecture, Jinli Street should definitely be a part of your Chengdu itinerary. This street is quite twisted but don’t worry – getting lost will only lead to discovering beautiful handicrafts shops and traditional restaurants.

Jinli Street Chengdu calligrapher art

There is a small alley where locals hang small colorful bags – there are thousands of them! These bags are a symbol used by people to wish for good luck, safety, good marriage or pretty much anything. If you want to embrace the Chinese culture, you can even buy one from a small shop nearby and hang it here.

While visiting the Jinli Street, do not hesitate to try some of the local street food (Gou Zi, Liang Gao, Liang Fen, and Fen Zheng Rou) or buy some panda-themed souvenirs. If you would like a more authentic souvenir, you can buy Shu embroidery. In front of one of the stores you can even watch how the Shu embroidery is made.

6. Shop till you drop at Taikoo Li & IFS

Here you will find options for any kind of budget. If you would like to shop for luxury items, then IFS is the perfect place for you. With more than 300 luxury brands, IFS is one of the trendiest shopping places in Chengdu . However, the main attraction is the giant panda who is climbing on the mall – don’t miss it!

IFS shopping district giant panda Chengdu

If you have a medium budget, you should check out Taikoo Li shopping area. I loved this shopping district’s architecture which is very similar to the Sichuan architecture but with a modern twist. With more than 300 retail outlets, Taikoo Li is a shopping heaven and a great place to spend the afternoon after exploring the amazing tourist attractions in Chengdu.

So, if you are in for some shopping in Chengdu, Taikoo Li and IFS are the perfect places and the best part is that they are within walking distance from each other. For more shopping places in Chengdu, click here .

7. Visit the Daci Temple

My Chengdu attractions list would never be complete without the Daci Temple. Just a few steps away from the Taikoo Li shopping district, Daci Temple is a tranquil place where you can enjoy some silence away from the usual hustle and bustle of the city.

Originally, the temple was built in 618 and it used to be the largest Buddhist monastery in Sichuan. However, over the time, the temple has been rebuilt many times.

Daci Temple Chengdu Chinese zodiac statues

Apart from its beautiful architecture, at Daci Temple you will find some of the cutest statues with the Chinese zodiac. One of the reasons I recommend visiting this temple is that here you won’t find any tourists. Daci temple isn’t yet on tourists’ radar so you can admire it in peace, without bumping into dozens of people.

8. Eat at the first panda themed KFC in the world

Ok, let’s admit – we all love KFC and we all love pandas. What if our favorite restaurant merged with our favorite animal? Well, in Chengdu you can eat at the first panda themed KFC in the world, right near the IFS shopping center.

This restaurant is fully decorated with panda paintings, bamboo pillars and panda stuffed animals. The cashiers even wear panda caps. How cute is that?

9. Admire the Anshun Lang Bridge

Among the things to see in Chengdu is the Anshun Lang Bridge which dates back to the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) and is located on Jinjiang River. The bridge is particularly beautiful during the night, when the lights reflect into the river and it houses one of the most popular restaurants in the city.

Anshun Lang Bridge at night, Chengdu

If you are looking for a romantic place to spend the evening while eating some traditional food, the Anshun Lang Bridge is the perfect place. Don’t hesitate to take a walk along the river and enjoy the best views over the Anshun Lang Bridge in Chengdu.

10. Visit the Wenshu Monastery

Wenshu Temple or Wenshu Monastery is the best-preserved temple in Chengdu and it was built in the Tang Dynasty (618-907). Here you can find works of art created by famous Chinese painters and calligraphers. However, the most important relic here at the temple is a piece of Xuan Zang’s skull who was a famous monk during the Tang Dynasty.

Wenshu Monastery Chengdu entrance

A visit to the Wenshu Monastery is the perfect opportunity to learn more about the Chinese culture. It is well known that Chinese people love tea. Right near the temple there is a beautiful tea house where you can sit on bamboo chairs and enjoy a delicious cup of tea together with the locals.

I loved Wenshu Monastery’s architecture and think that this is one of Chengdu’s highlights.

11. Visit the Qingyang Palace

Qingyang Palace or Black Goat Palace in Chengdu is one of the most famous Taoist temples in China and one of Chengdu’s points of interest. It was built during the Tang Dynasty (618-907) and even though it’s located in one of the busiest areas in the city, the temple is an oasis of tranquility.

Qingyang Palace, Chengdu

Take a walk through the temple and admire its beautiful architecture or join the locals and drink some tea while playing Mahjong. Either way, a visit to the Qingyang Palace is a must while in Chengdu.

12. Take a walk on Qintai Road

Probably one of the most beautiful streets in Chengdu, the Qintai Road is packed with tea houses, restaurants, jewelry stores and Sichuan Opera theaters. The street is almost one kilometer long and it ends with an impressive wooden gate with incredible carved details.

Qintai Road buildings, Chengdu

Qintai Road’s buildings are built in the styles of the Han (202BC — 220AD) and Tang (618 – 907) dynasties. I loved the pointy roofs with golden details. I recommend visiting Qintai Road during the night when all the lights and lanterns are lit. Just walk along the road and observe how the local life unfolds.

13. Explore the Kuan Zhai Alley

Also called the Wide and Narrow Street, the Kuan Alley and Zhai Alley are one of the most important tourist attractions in Chengdu. After intense renovations, the alleys were opened to public in 2008.

Here you will find traditional Chinese restaurants with beautiful gardens, souvenirs shops, art shops and delicious street food. These alleys are quite similar to the Jinli Street but I find them a bit more touristy.

Kuan Alley and Zhai Alley, Chengdu

Don’t hesitate to take lots and lots of photos here since you will find beautiful hidden alleys with Chinese architecture and red lanterns (for more awesome photography locations in Chengdu, click here ). If you want to taste the local food, try the rice cookies – they are delicious!

Also if you’re feeling adventurous and want to experience new things you can try the ear picking. When you see locals with flashlights on their head and thin metal sticks in their hands, they’re for ear picking. The Kuan Zhai Alley is one of the most famous sightseeing places in Chengdu so don’t miss it!

Ear picking at Kuan Alley and Zhai Alley, Chengdu

14. Cuteness overload at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

The Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is not only the most important tourist attraction in Chengdu but also a place where you can discover more about these incredible creatures.

China is the only country with pandas (excluding the zoos around the world). If you want to see these cute, giant balls of fur, the only provinces in China were you can see them are: Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces. Sichuan province hosts 70% of the pandas in China.

Therefore, if you are in Chengdu, take the chance to visit the Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding and be prepared to never want to leave.

Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, Chengdu

The base was founded in 1987 and nowadays it hosts over 100 giant pandas as well as other animals too (red pandas, black-necked crane and white crane). Pandas have always been my favorite animals and having the chance to observe them so closely has been a privilege.

Although until a few months ago visitors could hug a panda, now this practice has ended. As much as I wish to hug a panda, I believe that it’s better to limit the animals’ interaction with humans.

For more information about how the Panda Research Base, click here .

15. Shop in the world’s biggest building – New Century Global Center

Situated right near Guixi Ecological Park, the New Century Global Center is the world’s largest building in terms of floor area. This building is more than a mall – it has several facilities inside such as: offices, conference rooms, a university complex, an artificial pool, an IMAX cinema, commercial centres, an ice skating rink and even hotels. This building is a city itself!

New Century Global Center, Chengdu

Although I am sure that visiting it all would take one week, I think it’s an interesting experience to spend a few hours at the New Century Global Center.  If you want to see some photos from the inside, click here .

16. Dig in the past at the Jinsha Site Museum

If you want to learn more about the past, a visit to the Jinsha Site Museum is a must. Here you will find one of the most important relics in Chengdu and the symbol of the city: the Golden Sun Bird  which was excavated right at this site. You will see this symbol around the city: from the subway tickets to Tianfu Square.

Jinsha Site Museum - Golden Sun Bird

At the Jinsha Site Museum you will also find a large collection of relics of gold, jade, bronze, ivory (elephant tusks) and stone which are exhibited in 5 halls. These relics offer important information about the Shu Kingdom.

A visit to this museum is a must when in Chengdu if you are passionate about history. You can buy your entrance ticket here .

17. Get hungry at Sichuan Cuisine Museum

One thing is sure: I fell in love with the Sichuan cuisine. I loved it so much that I decided to visit the Sichuan Cuisine Museum and find out more about it. This museum is the first in the world to display a local cooking culture. Here you can see old cooking utensils and even taste some traditional dishes.

Sichuan Cuisine Museum, Chengdu

Also, you can see how the Pixian chili bean paste is made and even buy some. I personally loved the demonstration about how the Golden String Noodles are made – they are the thinnest noodles I’ve ever seen.

Although it’s a bit far from the city, visiting the Sichuan Cuisine Museum is an exciting experience for those who are passionate about gastronomy. If you don’t want to worry about transport, you can book a guided tour .

18. Drink tea at a tea house

Drinking tea is a central part of Chinese people’s lives and culture together with playing Mahjong. Chengdu is one of the biggest tea producing regions in China so visiting this city without trying the tea is a blasphemy.

Wenshu Monastery Chengdu tea house

If you want an authentic experience, you should try finding a tea house near riverbanks or in the parks of Chengdu. Some of the best tea houses in Chengdu are: Baihuatan Park, Yuelai Tea House or Suwei Chahao. Apart from being delicious, drinking tea is one of the top things to do in Chengdu.

19. Be brave and eat some spicy food

Chengdu is a foodie’s dream. If you want to experience the local cuisine, you should definitely try the Hot Pot or Chuan Chuan. Chinese people are not joking when it comes to spiciness. The good news is that if you don’t like spicy food, you can dip it in sesame oil before eating it and the spiciness is gone.

Hot Pot overview, Chengdu

The Hot Pot and Chuan Chuan are quite similar. You will sit at a round table with a bowl of broth in the middle. When eating Hot Pot, you will have to put the meat in the broth and let it cook for a few minutes. After this, you will have to search for it inside the broth. Sometimes it gets lost but sometimes you will find it – it’s kind of funny. The Chuan Chuan is a bit different because the meat and vegetables are already placed on long sticks so losing them in the broth is almost impossible.

Tip: you can find the best Hot Pot in the city at Shu Daxia Hot Pot.

20. Take a day trip outside Chengdu

If you feel that you’ve seen it all in Chengdu, a trip outside the city is a great idea. You can visit the Dujiangyan and the Qingcheng Mountain in only one day. For more awesome day trips from Chengdu, click here .

The Duijangyan Irrigation System is the oldest and only surviving no-dam irrigation system in the world and a wonder of Chinese science. This system plays a crucial role in draining off floodwater and providing water to more than 50 cities.

One of the highlights of this place is the Anlan Bridge or the Couple Bridge. The story says that during the Qing dinasty a husband and wife donated money to build this bridge and help the villagers cross the river safely. Unfortunately, they managed to build only half of the bridge. After the husband died, the wife built the other half.

To check out the guided tours to Duijangyan Irrigation System and Qingcheng Mountain, click here .

Dujiangyan tourist attraction - Anlan Bridge

At  Qingcheng Mountain you will find one of the most famous Taoist temples in China. Reaching it is a bit difficult and it requires hiking, taking a cable car, a boat and a bit more hiking but the trip is worth it. Considered one of the birthplaces of Taoism, Mount Qingcheng is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of Chengdu.

Qingcheng Mountain boat over lake, Chengdu

You can also visit Mount Emei or Leshan Giant Buddha as a day trip from Chengdu.

How to get around Chengdu – transport options

Public transport in Chengdu is extremely affordable and efficient.

Chengdu is a big city with a population of over 14 million people so getting around on foot is out of discussion. The fastest and most efficient way to travel around Chengdu is by subway. The subway system is incredibly efficient and there are stations near all the major Chengdu attractions.

If you want, you can also use the bus. It is affordable but sometimes due to traffic it might take a bit longer to get to your destination compared with the subway.

During our trip we also used a tuk tuk and I deffinitely recommend using it for short distances. Even though, compared to other countries like Cambodia , you won’t find that many tuk tuks in Chengdu, there are a few and riding one is always an interesting experience.

Another mode of transportation available in Chengdu is the taxi.

The best guided tours in Chengdu

If you’re looking for a hustle-free experience, you can choose a guided tour around the city. With a guide, you won’t have to worry about creating your own itinerary.

Also, you can book some cultural activities in the city. Below are the best guided tours and experiences in Chengdu:

Where to stay in Chengdu

I’ve searched for the best accommodation in Chengdu, for each budget. Here are my recommendations:

  • Budget – Together Hostel –  good location, clean rooms, brand new hostel
  • Mid Budget – Lia Hotel – excellent location, spacious & clean rooms, English speaking staff
  • Luxury – Minyoun Hotel –  excellent location, breakfast included, modern & elegant rooms, excellent services & staff

Final thoughts

My trip to Chengdu was actually my first time to China and I absolutely loved it. Even though I’ve been traveling all around southeast Asia for almost one year now, China felt completely different but in a good way. Chengdu was a lovely city and even though it was freezing cold, I loved it. I hope to come back sometime and explore more of it.

I hope you have enjoyed this article about the Chengdu tourist attractions and found it useful. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask me in the comments section below.

Wow-what a mind-blowing attraction in Chengdu. By seeing this post feeling to explore Chengdu you have shared us a great list by attractive images. Thanks for such a great list! Keep posting of many places!

I live in Chengdu, totally opposite feelings. The coldest it gets here in the winter is 11 degrees. You can wear just a thick sweater. No one speaks English, people are quite rude, hospitals are quite unsanitary, and many stories of westerners being attacked, so be careful.

The Sanxingdui Museum, just out of town is considered (by some) to be one of the greatest in the world.

I contains recently uncovered artifacts from a lost, barely understood civilization

There are recent discoveries and I can’t wait to go back

I cannot understand why it is seldom mentioned

Things to do with 2 days in chengdu, china.

Things to do with 2 Days in Chengdu, China

Visiting China Without a Visa

We used the 72 hour visa free rule for Chengdu so our visit was relatively short.  Most foreigners (including U.S. citizens) need a visa to visit China, however, Chengdu is one of the few Chinese cities that allow 72 hour visa free entry.  With this rule, citizens of certain countries are allowed to enter certain Chinese cities for less than 72 hours if they are traveling by air to a third country.  See  this post   for more details on the requirements for 72 hour visa free entry to China.

2 Days in Chengdu Itinerary

Day 1 – Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

visiting the panda base is a must on any chengdu china itinerary

The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in Chengdu, China is a research and breeding facility dedicated to the preservation of endangered giant pandas.  Visitors to the panda base have the opportunity to not only observe numerous pandas (who can resist cute baby pandas!) but actually hold a young panda.

While at the base, we took part in two little-known experiences.  First, we participated in a half-day panda keeper experience program where we toured the reserve with a keeper, pitching in with taking care of the pandas.  See  Our Day as Panda Keepers in Chengdu, China  for our experience as volunteer panda keepers.

2 days in Chengdu China itinerary

Following our panda keeper duties, we signed up for an experience that still makes us smile…actually hugging a real live panda!

Hugging Baby Panda Chengdu china

See Hugging a Panda in Chengdu, China  for photos and details on how you too can hug a panda at the Chengdu Panda Base.

In addition to the super cuddly giant pandas, the base is home to red pandas. Interesting fact: giant pandas are part of the bear family but red pandas are related to raccoons.

two days in chengdu panda base red pandas

Park signs warn to keep away from the red pandas as they are somewhat vicious and have bitten visitors.  A keeper confirmed this but stated that it only happens if they are provoked.  He then encouraged us to take photos next to a sleeping red panda.

chengdu panda base red pandas chengdu china in 2 days

The panda base was large and very pleasant to explore.  We enjoyed walking as it kept us warm in the chillier-than-expected weather, however, carts are also available to drive you around.

Day 2- More Walking and Jinli Pedestrian Street

After spending our entire first day in Chengdu at the panda base, we decided our second day should be spent exploring the city.   We walked to Tianfu Square and then two miles to Jinli Pedestrian Street.  Really, it was probably longer than two miles since we took detours (some intentional, some not) along the way.

Although Jinli was quite touristy, it did have numerous places to shop and sample local food.

chengdu travel blog jinli

Overall, Chengdu is a pleasant city worth visiting and the 72 hour visa free policy makes it even easier to do so.

OMG I wanna hug a panda too!

OMG This looks like sooo much fun! I would love to get that close to a Panda. What an incredible experience.

This really does look like a remarkable experience. Fabulous photos, but glad the sleeping panda didn’t wake up….

Pandas are amazing animals and to visit them in China is one of the top travel experiences for me! I visited them at the Chengdu Research Base but there is a slightly better place at the Ya’an Bifengxia Panda Base which is 2 hours drive from Chengdu.

I’m so jealous! Red Panda is one of my favorite animals, and I really adore them.

Oh, wow, pandas (and you two too) are adorable!

I would love to hug one!

Chengdu Travel Guide

Located between a high plateau region to the northwest dotted with mountains and a central region that is characterized by gentle hills and lush valleys, Chengdu is known as the "Land of Abundance".

Chengdu is not only the hometown of giant pandas ; it is also a "City of Gastronomy" recognized by UNESCO and the home of the famous Sichuan Cuisine. A 144-hour transit visa makes Chengdu panda and food tours easier.

Being a large, modern city (population: 9.4 million), Chengdu has all the material comforts that the international tourist demands. A bustling nightlife where one is likely to run across scads of fellow ex-pats (a 2006 article in the Los Angeles Times dubbed Chengdu as " China's party city ").

Chengdu is an important city in China's history. Moreover, did you know that:

  • Chengdu is the birthplace of paper money. (Everyone knows, thanks to Marco Polo, that paper money originated in China. Now you know exactly where in China it started).
  • Chengdu was chosen, in 2007, as one of the Top Ten Cities in the world to invest in . (Intel recently chose Chengdu as the site for its new, 200-million-dollar factory),
  • Chengdu was recently ranked as China's 4th "Most Livable City" by the Chinese newspaper giant, China Daily.

Chengdu Attractions

Chengdu itself doesn't offer many traditional historic or cultural sights of appeal to the tourist. However, the city is not only a regional hub for production and trade - as well as being a regional railway and air-traffic hub - it is also at the center of several nearby regional tourist attractions.

Here are the top 5 attractions in Chengdu or nearby.

  • Giant Panda Breeding and Research Center
  • Dujiangyan Giant Panda Base
  • Jinli Street
  • Kuanzhai Alley

Chengdu is suitable for travel all year round. Spring (March to June) and autumn (September to November) are always the most pleasant seasons, as the former is refreshing, and the latter is cool.

There are several places suggested to watch an opera show in Chengdu in the night, including the Shufeng Yayun Opera House in Qintai Road, Jinli Street and Kuanzhai Alley.

Chengdu Travel Guide

Chengdu, the capital of China's southwest Sichuan Province,  is famed for being the home of cute giant pandas . Located in the west of Sichuan Basin and in the center of Chengdu Plain, the city covers a total area of 12.3 thousand square kilometres (4,749 square miles) with a population of over 11 million. Benefiting from Dujiangyan Irrigation Project which was constructed in 256 B.C., Sichuan Province is reputed as the Heavenly State, Tian Fu Zhi Guo in Chinese, literally a place richly endowed with natural resources. Chengdu, as the capital, is extremely productive. The Min and Tuo Rivers, two branches of the Yangtze River, connected to 40 other rivers, supply an irrigation area of more than 700 square kilometres (270.27 square miles) with 150-180 million kilowatts of water. Consisting of abundant mineral resources, the land is extremely fertile.

Pandas and Peppercorns

Pandas and Peppercorns

September 12, 2023 by Robert Schrader Leave a Comment

I mentioned at the end of my blog post about Chongqing that I left the city bound for Chengdu. What I didn’t mention is that my trip to the Sichuanese capital was a second date, not a first.

Indeed, I’d seen Chengdu as provincial 10 years ago, having made my maiden voyage to the city after half a year living in cosmopolitan Shanghai . But this visit followed three days in the world’s largest village, which made Chengdu seem a century (or two) in the future by comparison.

No matter your current mindset about China’s panda city, or whether you’re just curious about how many days Chengdu requires, here’s how to make the most of your Chengdu itinerary.

Where to Stay in Chengdu

chengdu travel blog

The Chinese characters outside my room at Chengdu’s Buddha Zen Hotel translated to “Tolerance,” but there was nothing unsavory to tolerate after I entered. A boutique property inside a historical building just a stone’s throw from Wenshu Monastery, Buddha Zen is exactly the type of place I like to stay when I travel. And it’s precisely the type of China lodging I’ve been (unsuccessfully) seeking since I stopped staying in hostels half a decade ago.

What to Do During Your Chengdu Itinerary

Day one: destruction and restorations.

The impetus for my first trip to Chengdu was an Australian named Dan, whom I’d met in Texas the previous year just weeks before moving to Shanghai, and who was obsessed with Sichuan cuisine. In addition to wanting to gorge at the incredible (and obscene) Yu’s Family Kitchen , Dan’s si chuan cai goals included trying the noodles that bore his name— Dan Dan Mian . So, I began my first of three days in Chengdu by heading to the place where we enjoyed them together.

But not eating there: I arrived to find the shop reduced to a pile of rubble. That was sort of bad news, but the good news is that it forced me to find Dan Dan Noodles the way I usually find all my meals: By walking around until I found the most crowded stall cheffed by the fattest person on the block.

chengdu travel blog

My belly full and the sun beginning its descent toward the horizon, I cabbed it down gingko-lined Renmin Road toward Jinli Street , a charming historical district I knew would be more tourist-filled than I remembered it, both on account of it being a weekend and due to the higher international profile Chengdu enjoys these days.

That I accepted this fact in advance allowed me to focus on other things when I arrived, such as how ubiquitous gingko trees are in the city. Or how glad I was that the reflection of wishing bags colored my cheeks red when a handsome Sichuanese rower walked past me underneath them

My evening ended on an even gayer note: As I waited for the sun to set behind Anshun Bridge , which illuminates alongside its adjacent pagoda at the first sign of darkness in the sky, I played confidante to a half-drunk Albertan who confessed to me his desire to sleep with a ladyboy. I declined his offer to spend more time together that evening, but I did note how clean the air was (and how cool—I had the window down) on the way back to Buddha Zen, the Chengdu Radio and TV Tower glowing out the taxi window.

Day Two: Parks for Pandas and People

I departed bright and early my second of three days in Chengdu for the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding . It was my second visit to the base, which might seem redundant if you’ve been there—it’s little more than watching lazy bears eat bamboo—but also makes sense, if you listened to the sad story of the panda: I don’t know how long they’re going to be around, so I want to appreciate them while I can.

Actually, that’s melodramatic. Although my guide in 2010 had been bleak in his prognosis of pandas’ future, nearly every individual I saw this time was born in the past seven years—what they’re doing at the base is working. One thing that wasn’t working, unfortunately, was the option to pay extra to hold a panda cub, which I now wish I hadn’t been too broke to do before.

It was cold and rainy at the Panda Base, not unlike it had been when I was there previously, but by the time I arrived back in central Chengdu at the Sunken Plaza in Tianfu Square , the sun was shining.

chengdu travel blog

The sky wasn’t quite blue—Chengdu is famous for its haze—but it nonetheless provided a good backdrop for dramatic photos of a Mao statue looming over a square that’s now a monument to capitalism, even if I missed a shot with Tibetan monks walking in front of it.

To be sure, while many people characterize the center of Chengdu as being grey and soulless, at least one place in the heart of town exudes character: People’s Park , which according to the placard in front of it dates back to the Qing Dynasty.

None of the “ancient” structures here are original—Chengdu was an important regional center of the Cultural Revolution —but you can nonetheless feel something in the air here, as lovers paint Chinese characters on the ground under a canopy of gingkos, grannies dance (sometimes with each other) and groups of friends play cards, smoke pipes and row boats, often at the same time.

Day Three: The True Meaning of Buddhism

This city feels like everything China shouldn’t, I smiled wistfully as the breeze blew past me, hopping into a taxi—the sixth of six in Chengdu that took me where I asked without refusing to use the meter.

chengdu travel blog

Unfortunately, Chengdu’s chill doesn’t reverberate outward into Sichuan province. I arrived in Leshan , home to a “Grand” Buddha (and many others), not only to find a “small city” so sprawling and grand in scale that it dwarfs, say, Raleigh-Durham or Portland, but two taxi drivers that flat-out refused to take me to the city’s most popular tourists attraction.

Perhaps they were trying to warn me , I sighed as I arrived to the viewpoint overlooking the carved-in-rock Buddha, where no fewer than 500 people waited to descend the stairs to look up at the Buddha from the riverfront below. As a photographer, of course, the views from up high are better—and anyway, it would’ve been silly to fret: Isn’t being able to breathe through bedlam the entire point of Buddhism?

chengdu travel blog

Back in Chengdu—my experience in Leshan made me decide not to continue on to Mt. Emei , which I’d also skipped back in 2010—I decided to keep my final night simple, dining once again on Dan Dan Noodles, then stopping at a fruit seller I’d previously passed up to buy some of his luscious-looking cherries.

How Many Days Should You Spend in Chengdu?

I’ve more or less organized this post as 3 days in Chengdu blog, based both on my proclivity for itineraries of said length, as well as the fact that all my trips to the city so far have lasted about as long. However, it’s easy to spend much longer in Chengdu (and possible to see the city in a shorter amount of time, if you absolutely must)—here’s how, in just a few words.

When considering the bigger picture of Chengdu, how many days you spend there depends on two factors: What you plan to do in the city center; and how many day trips you want to take. For example, if you want to do everything in my Chengdu 3 day itinerary, plus do an entire day focused on eating and visit Dujiangyan Panda Base in addition to the main one, you could expand your trip to five days (or longer).

Other FAQ About Your Chengdu Itinerary

Is chengdu worth visiting.

Chengdu is absolutely worth visiting! If you don’t love the interesting architecture and cityscape, you’ll be amazed by the spicy, delicious Sichuan cuisine? Another thing I love about Chengdu is that it is extremely laid-back for a Chinese city, and is arguably the only Chinese city to deserve that designation.

What is the best time to visit Chengdu?

Like the rest of Sichuan province, Chengdu can experience cloudy, hazy weather all throughout the year, particularly in the cool, wet winter and the hot, hazy summer. I personally love visiting in more comfortable months such as April, May, October and November.

Do they speak English in Chengdu?

Although people who work at hotels and other tourist establishments may speak some English, Chengdu is a city that’s much like the rest of China: If you don’t speak at least a little bit of Mandarin, it’s pretty hard to get around. I wish this wasn’t true, but it is.

The Bottom Line

On paper, there are very few highlights within the city-proper of Chengdu—most visitors focus instead on the day trips I’ve detailed above during my Chengdu travel blog, such as the Panda Base, Leshan Grand Buddha and Mount Emei. On the other hand, my favorite memories of Chengdu are from right in the heart of it—gingko-lined boulevards, nameless noodle shops, quirky characters in public parks and vendors measuring fruit in the palms of their hands, instead of fixing their broken scales.
