Boston Green Cruises, which calls itself Boston Harbor's first eco-friendly fleet, offers a 60-minute, fully narrated sightseeing tour for all ages that covers the city's marquee waterfront sights. A 90-minute sightseeing cruise is also on offer on one of the company's smaller ships and includes time passing the historic locks along the Charles River. If you're looking for the ultimate intimate Boston Harbor cruise, consider a private charter, which can run anywhere from two to eight hours. Be aware that in the event of inclement weather, cruises will be rescheduled but not refunded, per company policy. Massachusetts Bay Lines, referred to locally as Mass Bay Lines, offers sightseeing tours and private charters in Boston Harbor – but also floating concerts and DJ sets you can experience with up to 379 of your closest new friends. Beyond traditional sightseeing tours and music cruises, Mass Bay also hosts a handful of themed options. Once per month from May through October, you can take part in a two-hour Full Moon Cruise, which sets sail under the lunar light of a full moon and the city lights of Boston in the background. Passengers 21 and up may choose to celebrate New Year's Eve or Independence Day by cruising in the city known as the birthplace of the American Revolution: The adults-only sailings on Dec. 31, July 3 and July 4 mark the occasions with a cash bar, dancing and a prime place to watch the fireworks. Dog owners will be happy to know Mass Bay even welcomes one four-legged friend per each adult ticket on its Dog Days of Summer sailings – but you're not required to bring a pooch, so if you're simply a dog lover looking to see the sights, head down to Rowes Wharf.

If you've walked around Beantown but still want to get some steps in – even on the water – consider booking a sightseeing harbor cruise that you can pedal. Cycleboat Boston lets you ride on bike seats and cycle your way through Boston Harbor to help propel the boat, but it's not required if you'd rather relax in the lounge. Tours focused on U.S. history cover the Boston Tea Party Ships , Bunker Hill Monument and the Charlestown Navy Yard, among other local sites. Pedal along during the day, by night or at sunset; the morning cruises encourage mimosas, but you must provide valid ID and bring your own beverages (with coolers and ice provided). Liberty Fleet of Tall Ships

Your two-hour tour begins by embarking the 125-foot Liberty Clipper at Long Wharf, or you can opt for a more intimate, 90-minute experience on the Liberty Star, which is less than half the size of the Liberty Clipper. Tickets and drink tickets can be purchased ahead online or during your cruise; otherwise, you can bring your own snacks and bag lunches.

The fleet sails Boston Harbor from June through September, offering sunset cruises, history sailings and evening cocktail cruises where the rum never stops flowing (with group discounts available for parties of four). India Wharf was one of the largest commercial wharves in the Port of Boston during the 19th century, and today the India Wharf Marina, just a short walk from the aquarium, hosts boats for rental or charter through Boston Electric Boats. Those seeking a self-guided Boston Harbor cruise will be pleased to take advantage of the Be Your Own Captain Rental, available for two hours at a time. No experience or boating license is necessary to pilot the boat – though the company will make sure you're comfortable before you set off – and up to 11 people can sail along with you.

If you'd rather leave the steering to someone else, a Captain Provided Charter accommodates up to six passengers, allowing you to take in the breeze and enjoy any refreshments you may have brought. The boat's canopy provides shade, while the open deck is perfect for basking in the sun; the enclosure windows can be opened or closed to adjust for the weather. These electric boats are more eco-friendly with no fuel odors and a quiet motor. Boaters have commented that preset GPS routes make piloting the boats much easier, and a top speed of 6 miles per hour keeps the ride safe and relaxing.

Boston Harbor Islands Ferry

Beginning in May, a ferry service provided by Boston Harbor City Cruises connects downtown Boston to the Boston Harbor Islands. This transport gives a unique chance to experience some of the wilder elements of Boston's seaways, with ferries that run to Spectacle Island, Georges Island and Thompson Island during the warmer months.

On Thompson Island, accessible only on weekends, you'll get a brief orientation to start your visit; on Saturdays, a National Park Service ranger hosts a guided walk to explore the island ecosystems, including salt marsh, beaches, meadows and forest. The Experience

Our Cruises are scheduled to meet at Pier 6 in the Navy Yard in Charlestown or India Wharf downtown next to the Boston Aquarium. These docks open directly into the incredible Boston Harbor. You will board our vessel, store your beverages and snacks, receive a quick introduction and review our safety protocols. Then it’s time to pedal out onto open water or relax and enjoy the amazing Boston Harbor!

From the Cycleboat, you’ll see Boston like never before! Take in the amazing views and soak up their history. Landmarks like the East Boston Tall Ship, Nantucket Lightship, Logan Airport, South Boston Seaport, Boston Tea Party Ship , the Downtown and Northend Waterfront, Boston CoastGuard Station, TD Garden, Bunker Hill Monument and the Historic Charlestown Navy Yard with the USS Constitution and WWII destroyer Cassin Young .

Just choose a seat at the table and pedal as much or as little as you like or just relax in the lounge area. Your cruise will take you to the shoreline of East Boston, South Boston Seaport, Fort Point Channel, Downtown and Northend Waterfront, Charles River Basin and the Charlestown Navy Yard . After 1.5 hours on the water, we’ll head back to Pier 6, exit the vessel and say our goodbyes. You’ll leave with a smile on your face after experiencing one of the BEST Boston Harbor Day Cruises!

No, don’t worry! Most people take turns and have fun pedaling or just cruising. The captain can raise or lower the paddle wheel to reduce the resistance, making the pedaling easier (just like lowering the gear on a bicycle). We can also supplement your pedal power with the outboard motor, so no one has to pedal!

Yes! Riders who are of age are welcome to bring beer, wine or pre-mixed cocktails (no hard alcohol) while they enjoy their Cycleboat ride! Of course non-alcoholic beverages are okay too!

There is a bathroom aboard our 20, 24 and two 26 passenger boats (Boston Patriot, Rosie the Riveter, Minuteman and Sweet Caroline) for emergencies our 16 person boat (Cycleboat One) does not have a bathroom but can make a short bathroom stop at the tour’s halfway point.

• It’s unlikely you’ll get wet, but dress for the weather conditions and for comfort, it can be a little windier or cooler on the harbor, so we do recommend bringing an extra layer especially for evening tours.
• Sunglasses and hats are great but you will be seated under a large canopy shielding direct sun and rain.
• No need to bring a cooler as we have ice chests with ice in the center bar between the pedal stations for passenger use.
• Also, snacks are great or anything you can eat with one hand (i.e. sandwich)

Getting Around

Getting there is half the fun when you’re traveling by boat! Boston Harbor has year-round ferries and water taxis and warm-weather recreational trips as well.

Boston Harbor Ferry Services in 2023

The MBTA currently offers scheduled ferry service year round to the Charlestown Navy Yard, Hingham, Hull, and Logan Airport operated by Boston Harbor City Cruises. The MBTA is also offering pilot services to East Boston and Lynn. You can buy tickets on board with cash, show a monthly Commuter Rail pass for the proper zone, or buy a ticket on the mTicket app.

• Boston Rowes Wharf to Hingham (Monday through Friday)
• Boston Long Wharf to Logan Airport, Hull, and Hingham
• Boston Long Wharf to Charlestown Navy Yard
• Boston Long Wharf to East Boston at Lewis Mall (daily through November 30, 2023 with service to resume in spring 2024)
• Boston Long Wharf to Lynn at Blossom Street Pier (Monday through Friday through October 31 with service to resume in summer 2024)

The Massachusetts Convention Center Authority provides year-round weekday commuter ferry service to Fan Pier in the Seaport from Lovejoy Wharf at North Station and from Lewis Mall in East Boston. You can buy tickets using their app.

There are seasonal ferry services to Salem and Provincetown and some other coastal communities. Tickets can be purchased online for all of them and on board for some of them.

• Bay State Cruise Company (daily through October 9, weekends through December 3)
• Boston Harbor City Cruises (daily through October 9)
• Salem (daily through October 31)
• Winthrop & Quincy (weekdays through November 30)

In 2023,  Long Wharf ferry service to the Boston Harbor Islands includes Spectacle Island (June 15 – September 4) and Georges Island (May 19 – October 9). Ferry schedules, fares, and additional information can be found here .

Thompson Island can be accessed by ferry on Saturdays and Sundays (May 20 – October 9) from the EDIC dock on the Reserved Channel.

Peddocks Island can be accessed by ferry on seven days a week (June 15 – September 4) from Hewitt’s Cove in Hingham.

Little Brewster (home of Boston Light) will have limited ferry access this summer with tours of the  Boston Harbor’s lighthouse .

Water Taxis & Shuttles

Boston Water Taxi provides on-call service at over 20 locations around the Inner Harbor. Trips to between most water taxi docks are $20 per passenger. Trips can be booked by calling 617-406-8584 .

Boston Harbor City Cruises offers a water bus service with connections between Long Wharf and Logan Airpor. Ticket are $15 each way for adults.

A water shuttle provides service between the Encore Boston Harbor Casino and Long Wharf seven days a week with longer hours on Saturdays and Sundays (May 1 – September 30). Tickets are currently free. Additional information about the service can be found here .

A complimentary boat shuttle operates seasonally between Pier 6 in Charlestown, the Reel House in East Boston, and Lewis Mall in East Boston.

In the summer, the ICA provides a water shuttle between the East Boston Shipyard and the Seaport’s Fan Pier to connect the museum to their Watershed outpost. Tickets are included with museum admission.

Boston Harborfest is a proud tradition celebrating Boston’s maritime and revolutionary history.

With hundreds of activities over Independence Day weekend at Boston’s most iconic historic landmarks, this family-friendly event is one of the country’s largest Fourth of July festivals. Activities include the annual opening ceremony in Downtown Crossing, historical reenactments, arts market, Chowderfest, live musical entertainment, fireworks, and much more!
