UPDATED: Springsteen announces 2023 European dates, U.S. to come
After the Associated Press posted, and then removed, a story on Bruce Springsteen's 2023 tour (oops), Springsteen Inc. has officially announced the European dates for the long-awaited return of Bruce and the E Street Band.
Unclear if "to-be-announced" is today or at some point later for the U.S. dates — check back for more information as it becomes available!
Full release, via brucespringsteen.net :
Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band will mark their return to the road in early February, 2023 with a string of to-be-announced US arena dates, followed by European stadium shows kicking off on April 28th in Barcelona and a second North American tour leg starting in August.
Said Springsteen: “After six years, I’m looking forward to seeing our great and loyal fans next year. And I’m looking forward to once again sharing the stage with the legendary E Street Band. See you out there, next year — and beyond.”
The planned European stops are Barcelona, Dublin, Paris, Ferrara, Rome, Amsterdam, Landgraaf, Zurich, Düsseldorf, Gothenburg, Oslo, Copenhagen, Hamburg, Vienna, Munich and Monza. Additional cities and shows in the UK and Belgium will be announced at a later date.
These 2023 dates will mark the first live shows for Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band since the conclusion of their 14-month, worldwide The River Tour in Australia in February, 2017. The River Tour was named 2016’s top global tour by both Billboard and Pollstar.
Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band last reconnected to perform on Saturday Night Live in December 2020, where they launched live versions of two songs from their most recent studio album ‘Letter To You’ (Columbia Records), which reached #1 in eleven countries and marked the band’s first time recording live together in decades. Last year, Springsteen unveiled his never-before-released “The Legendary 1979 No Nukes Concerts” film, collaborated with President Barack Obama on the book ‘Renegades: Born In The USA’ and reprised his record setting show ‘Springsteen On Broadway’ to help reopen New York City theaters last summer.
The E Street Band’s members are: Roy Bittan – piano, synthesizer; Nils Lofgren – guitar, vocals; Patti Scialfa – guitar, vocals; Garry Tallent – bass guitar; Stevie Van Zandt – guitar, vocals; and Max Weinberg – drums; with Soozie Tyrell – violin, guitar, vocals; Jake Clemons – saxophone; and Charlie Giordano – keyboards.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will return to the road in early 2023, launching a series of to-be-announced U.S. arena dates in February, followed by European stadium shows kicking off on April 28 in Barcelona, with a second North American tour leg starting in August.
"After six years, I’m looking forward to seeing our great and loyal fans next year. And I’m looking forward to once again sharing the stage with the legendary E Street Band. See you out there, next year -- and beyond," Springsteen said.
The planned European stops are Barcelona, Dublin, Paris, Ferrara, Rome, Amsterdam, Landgraaf, Zurich, Dusseldorf, Gothenburg, Oslo, Copenhagen, Hamburg, Vienna, Munich and Monza. Additional cities and shows in the U.K. and Belgium will be announced at a later date.
The 2023 dates will mark the first live shows for Springsteen and the E Street Band since the conclusion of their 14-month, worldwide “The River” tour in Australia in February of 2017. The group last played publicly on “Saturday Night Live” in December 2020, where they performed two songs from their most recent studio album, “Letter to You.”
Last year, Springsteen, who will be 73 when the tour launches, released the group’s “The Legendary 1979 No Nukes Concerts” film, collaborated with former President Barack Obama on the book “Renegades: Born in the USA” and reprised his “Springsteen on Broadway” show to help reopen New York City’s theaters last summer.
The E Street Band’s members are: Roy Bittan — piano, synthesizer; Nils Lofgren — guitar, vocals; Patti Scialfa — guitar, vocals; Garry Tallent — bass guitar; Stevie Van Zandt — guitar, vocals; and Max Weinberg — drums; with Soozie Tyrell — violin, guitar, vocals; Jake Clemons — saxophone; and Charlie Giordano — keyboards.

Springsteen has remained busy in the years since he last went on the road with Stevie Van Zandt, Max Weinberg, Patti Sciafla, Roy Bittan, Gary Tallent, Nils Lofgren, and the rest. He launched a Broadway show , which got an accompanying Netflix film and earned him a Lifetime Achievement Tony Award .
Springsteen also released two solo albums: 2019’s Western Stars and 2020’s Letter to You , which both also got accompanying films. He starred in a Jeep commercial that aired during the Super Bowl , too, and was briefly pulled after news emerged of a DWI charge (which was later dismissed ). He also put out a podcast and book with former President Barack Obama. Last year, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band’s Legendary 1979 No Nukes Concerts was released as an album and film.

Bruce Springsteen Adds Round of European Shows
The Boss had to reschedule his stadium run across the U.S. and Canada, but now, more fans will have the opportunity to see him in concert next year with 22 additional shows across Europe.
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will kick-off the new round of shows in Cardiff, Wales at Principality Stadium on May 5, 2024. From there, he’ll appear in cities like Dublin, Prague, Madrid, and Helsinki, making stops along the way at Friends Arena in Stockholm, Milan’s San Siro Stadium, and Dokken in Bergen, Norway. The new round of shows wraps-up at Wembley Stadium in London on July 25.
Earlier this year, Springsteen was forced to postpone all remaining 2023 tour dates to next year while he recovers from peptic ulcer disease. The dates across North America were rescheduled to next spring , beginning in Phoenix on March 19. The rescheduled shows are spread out throughout the year, running through April and then picking-up again in August and running through late November.
Multiple shows were already pushed back on the tour due to his condition, and the trek faced woes from fans during the initial on sale due to outrageously priced tickets. “Price floors” were used to prop-up ticket sales, with many seats available leading up to a show.
See Springsteen’s full list of upcoming tour dates below. If you missed tickets during the initial onsale, you can score seats via MegaSeats , StubHub , or Ticket Club — where TicketNews readers can receive a free membership with the code “TICKETNEWS.”

The Other Eras Tour: 9 Thoughts on Bruce Springsteen at Madison Square Garden
By Brian Hiatt
Brian Hiatt
After a two-hour-plus main set that slammed home themes of mortality and impermanence and the way of all flesh, Bruce Springsteen reemerged on Madison Square Garden’s stage Saturday night, April 1, for his usual lengthy encore, and announced “something special for New York City.” He pointed over at Soozie Tyrell, who began a dead-on recreation of one of rock’s few canonical violin melodies, over piano from all-time-great arpeggio purveyor Roy Bittan. They eased the E Street Band into the 11-minute-long, 48-year-old mini-rock-opera “Jungleland,” played and sung with enough muscle and drama and soaring perfection to momentarily make the rest of the show’s messages seem like a lie. Death? Impossible. Decline? Not tonight.
Editor’s picks
The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.
Still, he could mix it up a bit more. Besides the “Jungleland” addition, there is one near-wildcard slot in the setlist, filled at MSG with his taut-as-ever, if overused over the years, reworking of Jimmy Cliff’s “Trapped” (at the previous stop on the tour, it was “Darkness on the Edge of Town” in that slot, which would’ve been more welcome). In the actual Eras Tour, Taylor Swift has a truly rotating song slot, offering a chance to slip the deepest of cuts into the set every night. With Springsteen’s vast catalog, including the entire, as-yet-unplayed-before-a-paying-audience Western Stars album from 2019 (that title track, one of his best-ever songs, should kill live), slipping in one real obscurity every night certainly couldn’t hurt. There’s other songs, too, including “Johnny 99,” that seem eminently swappable on any given night.
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band Are Playing on the Beach in Asbury Park. Here's How It Happened
Bruce springsteen plots return to the road in spring 2024, bruce springsteen postpones remaining 2023 tour dates due to peptic ulcer disease.
Max Weinberg, who has the greatest physical challenge of anyone in the band as a 71-year-old arena-rock drummer, has been preparing for this tour practically since the last one ended in 2017, and his feel, groove, and sense of time seemed subtler than ever. A shades-wearing Garry Tallent was, as always, impossibly locked into Weinberg’s kick drum, even as the arena’s inevitable muddiness sometimes meant he was more felt than heard. It’s always fun to figure out what parts Nils Lofgren — now a simultaneous Crazy Horse member and E Streeter — is adding to the mix, from a fancy rhythm guitar-bit on “No Surrender” to a chops-enhanced version of a guitar break originated by Springsteen on “Rosalita.”
This tour’s extra horns and singers only enhanced the show — with just a couple of exceptions. The horn section, in particular, is most welcome when it’s doing something interesting, which is often, as on the New Orleans breaks of “Johnny 99,” on the twin songs from The Wild, The Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle , and of course “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out.” It only feels superfluous when the players are roped into recapitulating, and almost overpowering, signature riffs during two encore hits, “Dancing in the Dark” and “Glory Days.”
Jake Clemons is a miracle. Springsteen’s songs evoked ghosts throughout the evening, and Clemons invoked one just in his playing and presence. His big-lunged tenor sax tone has always had an uncanny resemblance to his late uncle Clarence Clemons’ otherwise singular sound. But at the Garden, after more than a decade in the band, Jake sounded more like his late predecessor than ever, even as, at age 43, he continued to bring his own youthful-by-E-Street standards energy to the stage. From the start, the other 21st-century replacement for a departed E Streeter, skilled keyboardist Charlie Giordano, has seemed less wedded to Danny Federici’s organ parts. But then again, Federici himself was rarely wedded to his own studio parts on any given night.
Even if some of the crowd had trouble staying in the moment, Springsteen never did. He still shut his eyes in utter immersion as he sang “Badlands” for the 1,229th time, and still drew energy from the audience in some eerie yet very real way. (Yes, that number is correct, per Brucebase .) He still has some surprises left on guitar, with his solo on “Kitty’s Back” noticeably straying from his usual harmonic vocabulary to match his horn players’ more adventurous note choices. And his voice continues to do that weird thing where it somehow sounds stronger towards the end of the show than at the beginning.
It’s “sways,” damn it. Newly aware of the mildly ludicrous debate over whether Mary’s dress sways or waves on “Thunder Road,” Springsteen is now singing “sways” with exaggerated clarity and a huge smile.

When did the coronavirus pandemic actually end and we returned to normality?
Was it when the health ministers declared communities reopened? When the last remnants of the face mask ban were removed? When we could drop corona passports for travelling within the EU? When beer was once again flowing on outdoor cafés? When we all got our booster dose? Or was it when China (finally) abandoned its zero-Covid strategy?
For our part, the definitive anniversary, and the return to long-awaited “normality” (if that is even a description that can be used while a bloody war of aggression rages in the middle of Europe?) was at 19:46 on Friday, 7 April 2023 – exactly at the moment when thirty thousand frantic hands reached tactfully into the air, and the ecstatic crowd roared out: «Brooooooooooooooooooooooooce!!!» .
The venue was CFG Bank Arena Baltimore, just 45 minutes’ drive from the centre of power (Washington DC) in the USA.
The occasion was the long delayed world tour of Bruce “The Boss” Springsteen.
Tour start, Europe
Today, the European leg of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band’s 2023 tour kicks off in Barcelona, Spain to continue through Europe in the following months.
https://twitter.com/catalannews/status/1652066852426711047?t=o_YXX3n1amiiBTjrqDP-rQ&s=01
L&B Tech Reviews made the trip across the pond, to catch up with the ageing rock legend, “the spirit of America”, before he shakes our asses in a few months.
Because, after nearly 60 years on the road, is there still relevance, life and vitality in a Springsteen show in 2023?
We’ll just mention it, New Jersey’s great son (who recently had his official “Bruce Springsteen Day” in the Garden State) actually turns 74 (!) in September.
You know I always liked that empty road
In recent decades, Springsteen has been one of the major artists who has spent the most time on the road, travelling the world either solo or with his E Street Band to spread his musical treasure (and rake in a bit of cash) . However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the living legend hasn’t been on tour (with the exception of his unique Broadway shows , 2017-2018) since February 2017.
Last September, Springsteen turned an impressive 73 years old. Now in his 59th year as an active musician, The Boss is definitely not resting on his laurels and counting his money . It’s been two and a half years since he released his 20th studio album, the fiery (slightly nostalgic) rock-heavy Letter to You .
The plan was to go on a world tour the following spring/summer – but we all know what kind of shit hit the world in early summer 2020…
So instead of touring, it was lockdown for Springsteen too, with his own radio show, a podcast with President Obama – and a new soul cover album last autumn ( Only the Strong Survive ). But on 1 February, The Boss and his E Street Band kicked it all off in Tampa, Florida. A tour that has certainly had its controversies around ticket pricing.
When announcing the world tour last autumn, the rock legend said:
After six years, I’m looking forward to seeing our great and loyal fans next year. And I’m looking forward to once again sharing the stage with the legendary E Street Band. See you out there, next year — and beyond.
This year’s “version” of the E Street Band consists of: Roy Bittan (piano, synthesiser); Nils Lofgren (guitar); Patti Scialfa (guitar, vocals); Garry W. Tallent (bass guitar); Little Steven (guitar, vocals); Max Weinberg (drums); Soozie Tyrell (violin, guitar, vocals); Jake Clemons (saxophone) and Charlie Giordano (keyboards).
A Man on a Mission!
Then suddenly the rock legend is standing there. Shamelessly fresh and still (almost) eternal. His hair is short and greying, his smile is as broad and welcoming as ever, and in his usual style, Springsteen doesn’t play his guitar, he hammers it!
During the concert in Baltimore, The Boss served us a marvellous mix of old classics, more obscure fan songs, as well as songs from his two latest albums ( Letter to You and Only the Strong Survive ). There was room for 26 songs, over 2:47 hours. However, sadly, no songs from his masterpiece Western Stars .
For Springsteen, the setlist during the first US leg of the tour has rarely been static. The core consists of the same songs, spiced up ad hoc with 2-3 “new” songs.
He has a specific message to convey this time, it feels a bit like time is running out – Springsteen no longer has time for long monologues or picking up dozens of posters with song requests from the audience.
In a recent podcast, Little Steven spoke about the current tour :
This one happens to be a special one. (…) This is the strongest reaction we’ve ever received from audiences in America. The show is not a ‘best of’ show, it’s more like a sample of each of our eras. The songs are not all from ‘Letter to You’ but they take on that theme. It’s not exactly a linear, literal storyline from beginning to end, but it has that color of the theme that comes from the album. Every song has a purpose. You’re telling a story and every song has a purpose (…) – it’s about an emotional experience.
No, he no longer hangs upside down in the microphone stand, slides across the stage floor on his knees, dances with blushing young girls or crowd surfs. But the unique joy of playing, the vocal splendour, the guitar skills and the slightly indefinable, unique stage presence are definitely still there.
And, he still rips off his shirt and exposes his tight, tanned chest – once a rock star, always a rock star, we think with a smile.
Revival meeting in Baltimore
From the first chord of the fiery No Surrender (from the monster hit album Born in the USA ), the band fires on all cylinders in a non-stop rock show for the first hour. The song is one of those unique songs that works just as well as a fist-pumping rock party as a solo acoustic balm for the soul.
Now on the street tonight the lights grow dim The walls of my room are closing in There’s a war outside still raging You say it ain’t ours anymore to win I want to sleep beneath Peaceful skies in my lover’s bed With a wide open country in my eyes And these romantic dreams in my head ‘Cause once we made a promise we swore we’d always remember No retreat, baby, no surrender
Apart from shouting out “ Baltimore! ” it’s as if The Boss has the Devil himself on his heels and has to play for his life. And the audience, well they’re definitely on the notes.
Typical of an American Springsteen concert, it’s a family event. Grandma, mum and dad and children/grandchildren gather for a full evening in the city’s newly refurbished main hall.
Hours before kick-off, people gather in droves outside the stadium, grilling burgers and drinking beer – lots of beer.
From the moment the lights go out and Little Steven strums his first guitar riff (on his Ukraine tribute guitar), the crowd is on their feet, dancing, hooting, waving their arms; and then roaring with delight:
We Love you, Bruce!
The commitment and passion is impeccable, and it’s infectious to the 17 men and women on stage who give everything they have, and then some, to give us a much-needed break from everyday life, some comfort, joy, memories to reflect on; and three hours later leave the stadium as (for a short while) a happier person.
A reflective troubadour
In our review of Letter to You, we were convinced that the rock fest Ghosts would be a sure-fire hit at Springsteen’s upcoming shows. The Boss kicks off with it already as song number two, and in many ways it sets the theme for the evening.
The death of band mate George Theiss (from Springsteen’s first band, The Castiles ) was the artistic trigger for the writing process that resulted in the Letter to You album. The realisation that Springsteen is now the last man alive from the original band runs through the evening.
It’s a concert, and a setlist, largely characterised by reflection, musings on growing old, loss of friends and loved ones – and the starkly honest acknowledgement from a reflective man in his mid-70s that:
At 15 it’s all tomorrows – it’s all hellos. At 73 – a lot more goodbyes. Makes you realize how important living right now is.
That said, this is no nostalgic reminiscence concert, with depressive undertones Springsteen has organised. As he bubbles over with joy and enthusiasm, he continually mixes the setlist between deep songs like Backstreets , The Promised Land and The Rising with playful pop tunes, and unabashed crowd pleasers like Out in the Street, Pay Me My Money Down and (not least) Baltimore’s unofficial “national anthem”, Hungry Heart . As he begins The River classic, the sing-along in the hockey arena explodes.
This has always been Springsteen’s strength as a songwriter and concert connoisseur. You’ll cry, laugh, reminisce, sing, sweat and dance your way through a full evening with The Boss.
His distinctive, slightly rusty voice still shines, and the rocker impresses as much on the bombastic Badlands as he does on the tender I’ll See You in My Dreams and Last Man Standing . On the soulful Nightshift , the velvet version of his voice gets to shine.
Flock of angels lift me somehow Somewhere high and hard and loud Somewhere deep into the heart of the crowd I’m the last man standing now I’m the last man standing now I’m the last man standing now
The world’s best bar band
The entire core of the E Street Band pushes 70 (and then some), but they’re still one of the best bar bands you can see live. Full of energy, fun, euphoric enthusiasm and musical artistry.
How the whole gang gets to shine during, for example, the slightly obscure jazzed-up classics Kitty’s Back and E Street Shuffle , where a conducting Springsteen plays his way through, is symptomatic of the evening.
Springsteen’s prowess as an excellent guitar player is often under-recognised. Granted, there are technically better guitar players than him, exemplified by the man on the Boss’s right all night (the incomparable Nils Lofgren), but when he gets to dazzle with his guitar solos like during Prove it All Night, Kitty’s Back and No Surrender , it still sends shivers down the audience’s spine.
A stripped-down version of Backstreets is one of the evening’s highlights. He sings it stripped down and alone; sore and goosebumpy we hear:
Trying to learn to walk like the heroes we thought we had to be And after all this time, to find we’re just like all the rest Stranded in the park and forced to confess To hiding on the backstreets Hiding on the backstreets Where we swore forever friends On the backstreets until the end
A slimmed-down version of Little Steven remains Springsteen’s indispensable wing man, stoic guitarist and delightful jester. Often arm in arm with Bruce, they sing the classic duets about friendship together. Tallent is the introverted bassist who never misses a note but stays modestly in the background.
Young Jake Clemons (nephew of the late Clarence “The Big Man” Clemons) has grown with the task, standing his ground and now impresses as much as his legendary uncle during the fiercest saxophone solos. The stalwart synth wizard Roy “The Professor” Bittan shines, while the energetic Max Weinberg handles the drum kit with an almost manic intensity.
The horn section adds a hint of swinging jazz nightclub atmosphere – and the whole lot is masterfully orchestrated by the Boss; while the lighting technicians do the best job we’ve seen at a Springsteen concert.
The entire ensemble plays with the same intensity, fervour and passion as decades ago. Simply indescribably impressive. Where the “old boys” get their energy from we don’t know, but if there is a secret elixir, we would love to have a bottle!
Admittedly, the Boss is on home turf, but despite that, it is impressive how he holds the large, and varied, audience in the palm of his hand throughout the evening. There are songs here that are far from being hits, and hardly played live for years, nor are they all danceable rockers. But even during the quietest parts, there is mostly reverent silence (except for some commotion in the stands as people are going into (yet another) bar queue).
The night ends with the heartbreakingly beautiful I’ll See You in my Dreams , with a rock legend all alone, in a cone of light, on stage, strumming his acoustic guitar. By then we’ve shaken ourselves loose and danced the joy of life into us during the revitalising Rosalita, Glory Days and Dancing in the Dark .
The evening is complete!
I’ll see you in my dreams When all our summers have come to an end I’ll see you in my dreams We’ll meet and live and laugh again I’ll see you in my dreams Yeah, up around the river bend For death is not the end And I’ll see you in my dreams
After nearly three hours, and 26 life-affirming songs, Bruce Springsteen ends another legendary marathon concert. A concert that he kept his eternal promise that would feature: «Fun, and jokes, and dancing, and laughter, and sex, and faith, and hope and lonely nights – and of course, teardrops» .
Rock ‘n’ roll future
In May this year it will be 49 years since former Rolling Stone Magazine music critic Jon Landau reviewed Springsteen’s concert at the Harvard Square Theatr e, Cambridge, MS; after which he wrote those prophetic words:
I saw rock ‘n’ roll future and its name is Bruce Springsteen.
Little did (the current manager) realise how right he would be – for almost 50 years later, few artists can match Springsteen’s knee-deep concert performances, and the rocker is still regularly releasing new, and vital, material. If he no longer represents the future per se, the man is a living rock icon, and a bridge between rock’s past and future.
The joy, intensity, presence and musical energy is as powerful today as it was when Springsteen made his debut and when he was at his most popular in the mid-to-late 1980s.
In 2009, as President Obama was about to award Springsteen the Kennedy Center Honours , the former president said the following about the rock legend’s concert career:
It’s no wonder that his tours are not so much concerts, but communions. There’s a place for everybody – the sense that no matter who you are or what you do, everyone deserves their shot at the American Dream; everybody deserves a little bit of dignity; everybody deserves to be heard. I’ve seen it myself (…) and when I watched him on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial when he rocked the National Mall before my inauguration, I thought it captured as well as anything the spirit of what America should be about. On a day like that, and today, I remember: I’m the President, but he’s The Boss. And Bruce continues to inspire, along with his “house-rocking, earth-shaking” E Street Band. At 60 years old, he’s still filling stadiums, still whipping fans into a frenzy, still surfing the crowd, still jumping off pianos, and still reaching new fans (…) Bruce Springsteen is still one “cool rockin’ Daddy”.
This may well be the last all-encompassing world tour with The Boss and his E Street Band, but we’re convinced that Springsteen, in one form or another, will be touring for years to come; until he collapses on stage.
Is The Boss still Boss?
We’ll admit it. By the time the lights went out and the band took to the stage in Baltimore, we were a little sceptical about Springsteen’s concert qualities in 2023.
The boss is now in his mid-70s. It had been a full seven years since we last saw him live, six years since his last tour, lockdown, the sale of his music archive and more and more nostalgic flashbacks; and his last album was a pure cover album.
Thankfully, he blew all our scepticism away, rocked us out of our seats, blew his guitar solos through our bodies, sang his way into our souls – and proved once again why he (still) deserves that inimitable nickname: THE BOSS!
NOTE! The current tour rolls around Europe until 25 July this year (Monza, Italy); after that, Springsteen returns for a round of stadium shows in the US.
Bruce Springsteen’s European tour starts on 28th. April in Barcelona, Spain and ends 25th July in Monza, Italy.

Consider yourself extremely lucky if you’ve already secured your tickets – they sold out long ago .

The inaugural Reyes Cup will be held in Manila, capital of the Philippines, in honour of pool's greatest player and tournament namesake, Efren 'Bata' Reyes.
The tournament will follow in the footsteps of the four-day team format of the prestigious Mosconi Cup, which celebrated its 30th anniversary at Alexandra Palace in London last December. Tourism deputy rings up N.B. government's largest 2023 expense account
Moving costs and an $800-a-night hotel help push yennah hurley's expenses over $77,000.
Social Sharing
Luxury-hotel stays during an unpublicized trip to London and Paris and a personal move from Quispamsis to Fredericton helped deputy tourism minister Yennah Hurley, the former adviser to Premier Blaine Higgs, amass $77,710 in expenses in 2023.
It's the largest amount claimed by a senior official in the New Brunswick government for the year, including the premier and cabinet ministers, according to online departmental expense reports.
New Brunswick releases information on expenses paid to ministers and senior government officials quarterly for travel, living expenses, car allowances, accommodations and other costs.
It calls it an "effort to improve transparency, accountability and enhance the proactive disclosure of information."
In 2023, the largest amount claimed by an elected official for the calendar year was $52,522 by Higgs. That included $10,999 spent on a trip to Europe last May highlighted by Higgs's speech at the World Hydrogen Summit in the Netherlands.
Charges by the premier, however, were eclipsed by Hurley, whose expense claims ran nearly 50 per cent higher.
Hurley is a former small adventure business operator and travel blogger who has been New Brunswick's deputy minister of tourism since 2020.
She was hired in 2019 on a two-year consulting contract by Higgs to work in the Tourism Department and report directly to him on changes that might be made.
One change that came quickly was the firing of the previous deputy minister, Francoise Roy, a month after Hurley began work. Ten months later, Hurley had Roy's old job
"I am proud that she is working with the people in the department," Higgs said in the legislature in 2019 in defending Hurley's initial hiring.
"I am proud that she is working with the minister because we are going to get things done by thinking differently. I am proud that she is part of the team."
In 2023, reports show, Hurley took several trips on government business both inside and outside Canada.
Expense reports contain little information on the purpose of trips, and Hurley was not made available for an interview. However, her reports show $21,488 was spent on hotels in multiple locations, including Banff, Quebec City and North Carolina.
According to information provided by the province, the most expensive trip, an eight-day visit to Europe last September was an effort to boost international tourism interest in New Brunswick.
It was also said to be for gathering information on tourism sites of significance that are recognized by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization.
"The purpose of the mission was to discuss opportunities with international tour operators for visits to New Brunswick," Bruce Macfarlane, New Brunswick's senior director for media relations, wrote in response to a request for information about the trip.
"The mission also included site visits and meetings with UNESCO properties and museums with four nights in London and a four-night stay in Paris."
Four Tourism Department representatives went to Europe, according to Macfarlane, including Hurley and the minister, Tammy Scott-Wallace.
The group stayed at the Trafalgar St. James, a London hotel, before eventually moving to Hotel Lumen in Paris.
According to prices advertised online and expense reports submitted by both Scott-Wallace and Hurley, the hotels charge about $800 and $600 per night, respectively.
Hurley's expenses also included receipts for visits to Windsor Castle, Stonehenge, an unspecified British museum, the London Eye, and the Palace of Versailles.
There appeared to be no specific charges for business meetings during the eight days by either the minister or deputy minister. Hurley's expenses eventually totalled $12,328 with Scott-Wallace charging $10,199.
Isabelle Theriault, the deputy Liberal leader and opposition tourism critic, said she is surprised to hear about the trip.
By coincidence last September, the Tourism Department was in front of the legislature's public accounts committee two weeks after Hurley returned from Paris, and Theriault questioned her about departmental efforts being made to promote New Brunswick in Europe.
The trip was never mentioned.
"If I had known I would have asked questions about it," said Theriault.
"If they just came back from those regions in Europe why didn't they tell me, 'We went there to work on how to attract people from those regions.' But they chose not to tell."
Hurley's largest expense in 2023 was not travel-related. After her return from Europe, she sold her house in Quispamsis and moved to Fredericton, ending four years of commuting.
- Hand-picked Higgs officials living outside Fredericton cost taxpayers extra
- Taxpayers foot bill for 2nd residence in Fredericton for deputy tourism minister
- Blaine Higgs hire unaware of social media ban on politically partisan posts
That move cost taxpayers a further $19,321.17 in relocation costs.
Those included $15,000 for the real estate commission paid on the house Hurley sold, $3,550.67 for movers and $770.50 in legal fees.
According to the New Brunswick government's relocation policy, moving expenses for an existing employee are allowed at the discretion of a departmental deputy minister "if" the employee "is transferred."
Hurley was not transferred to a new job, and she did not take a loss on the sale of her home, which sometimes adds to relocation costs.
Real estate records show the house sold last October for $405,000, well above the listed asking price of $324,900.
Nevertheless, Macfarlane said it was determined Hurley did in fact qualify to have moving expenses covered and emphasized she did not approve her own claim. He declined to say who did.
"As outlined in the relocation policy, in no case can the Deputy Head authorize their own relocation expenses," wrote Macfarlane.
"Another designate approved the relocation expenses within the policy directive. Although we cannot talk about specific cases, the relocation expenses fell within the policy."

Americans who have traveled internationally stand out in their views and knowledge of foreign affairs
Do people who travel think differently about the world? A new Pew Research Center survey suggests they do.
Americans who have traveled internationally are more interested in and knowledgeable about foreign affairs, feel closer to others around the world, and favor a more active foreign policy, according to the survey of 3,576 U.S. adults conducted in spring 2023. We also surveyed people in 23 other countries about their international travel habits.
This analysis examines international travel with a focus on Americans’ travel, including which Americans travel abroad and how their interest in the world and views of international affairs differ from others.
For this analysis, we surveyed 3,576 U.S. adults from March 20 to March 26, 2023; 3,581 U.S. adults from March 21 to March 27, 2022; and 10,606 U.S. adults from June 14 to June 27, 2021. Everyone who took part in these surveys is a member of the Center’s American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. This way nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other categories. Read more about the ATP’s methodology .
For non-U.S. data, this report draws on nationally representative surveys of 27,285 adults conducted from Feb. 20 to May 22, 2023. All surveys were conducted over the phone with adults in Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, South Korea, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Surveys were conducted face-to-face in Hungary, Poland, India, Indonesia, Israel, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Argentina, Brazil and Mexico. In Australia, we used a mixed-mode probability-based online panel.
Here are the June 2021 survey questions and responses used in this analysis. Those for the March 2022 survey may be found here , as well as those for the March 2023 survey .
How many Americans have traveled internationally?
Roughly three-quarters of Americans (76%) have visited at least one other country, including 26% who have been to five or more. About a quarter (23%) have not traveled internationally, though most in this group say they would if they had the opportunity.
Related: How experience with international travel varies across 24 countries
To analyze how Americans’ travel experiences relate to their attitudes on other questions, we placed people into three categories:
- Globe-trotters have traveled to at least five other countries. About a quarter of the U.S. public (26%) falls into this category.
- Casual travelers have traveled to between one and four other countries. Half of Americans fall into this category.
- Nontravelers have never left the United States. This category includes 23% of Americans.
Compared with Americans, people in many European nations are more likely to have traveled to five or more other countries. For instance, 88% of Swedes have done so.
However, international travel is much less common in many middle-income nations. It is strongly correlated with a nation’s gross domestic product per capita. (For more on international travel and views about global engagement, read “Attitudes on an Interconnected World.” )
Who travels internationally?
Perhaps unsurprisingly, older people are more likely than younger people to have traveled internationally. Americans ages 65 and older are more than twice as likely as adults under 30 to fall into our globe-trotter category (37% vs. 17%).
Income is even more strongly related to travel than age. Two-thirds of upper-income Americans have traveled to at least five countries, compared with 9% of Americans with lower incomes.
Similarly, Americans with a postgraduate degree are far more likely to be globe-trotters than those with a high school education or less (59% vs. 10%).
Residents of suburban and urban areas generally have more international travel experience than people who live in rural areas.
There are no significant partisan differences when it comes to international travel: 26% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents qualify as globe-trotters, as do 28% of Republicans and GOP leaners.
Do travelers know more about the world?
Globe-trotters are especially likely to say they are interested in foreign affairs and follow international news. Casual travelers, in turn, are more likely than nontravelers to do so.
Globe-trotters are also the most knowledgeable about international affairs. In 2022, we conducted an international affairs quiz , asking Americans 12 questions related to international news. On average, globe-trotters got 8.2 of the 12 questions correct, compared with 6.4 for casual travelers and 4.2 for nontravelers.
Is international travel related to views of global engagement?
International travel experience is also linked to Americans’ views about international affairs and their feelings of connection to other people around the world.
When asked which comes closest to their view, 57% of globe-trotters say the U.S. should be active in world affairs, while 43% say the U.S. should pay less attention to problems in other countries and concentrate on problems at home. In contrast, most casual travelers and nontravelers say the U.S. should focus on problems at home.
In all three groups, at least half of respondents say that when the U.S. is making foreign policy, it should take other countries’ interests into account – even if that means making compromises. But globe-trotters are especially likely to hold that view.
Globe-trotters are also particularly likely to say they feel close to people around the world, with 42% saying so. By comparison, 34% of casual travelers and 30% of nontravelers say this.

A growing share of Americans have little or no confidence in Netanyahu
Fewer americans view the united nations favorably than in 2023, what are americans’ top foreign policy priorities, rising numbers of americans say jews and muslims face a lot of discrimination, younger americans stand out in their views of the israel-hamas war, most popular.

Imagine Dragons’ sixth studio album LOOM represents the pinnacle of their artistic journey of self-discovery and marks the best body of work they’ve ever made. LOOM , produced entirely by Imagine Dragons and their longtime collaborators Mattman and Robin, finds the perfect balance between the classic sounds that have made them superstars and the freshness that brought them joy in the studio. Featuring 9 brand new tracks including hit single “Eyes Closed”, LOOM signifies new beginnings on the horizon – the excitement for a new day, moments yet to come.
Last year, the members of Imagine Dragons found themselves with a rare and well-deserved break from the road—perhaps their longest in many years. So, they made the most of it by devoting that time to family and friends. Catalyzed by this respite with a refreshed perspective, the band rallied together in the studio and mined the same well of inspiration that fed their most beloved material. The musicians reflected on the past in order to catapult into a future where stylistic boundaries have disappeared entirely and anything is possible creatively. This journey has brought them to their most dynamic and definitive body of work to date, LOOM .
To herald LOOM , the band recently shared their soaring new anthem entitled “Eyes Closed.” Check out the video HERE . The track illuminates their penchant for boundary-breaking. Stretching the limits of the soundscape almost to the breaking point, they harness a burst of energy with a rafter-reaching refrain primed to soar on the upcoming summer tour.
It’s the year of the Dragons …
