An outstanding way to learn about the city...

“This was my third experience with ‘Burgh Bits & Bites and again, exceeded expectations. Marla was a knowledgeable, friendly guide; the food stops were delicious albeit waaaay too generous for "bites" and the overall service from ticket order until now was outstanding. It is an outstanding way to learn about the city and to share it with out of towners.”

Highlighted many hidden gems in Lawreneceville...

“Pittsburgh is full of great flavors and this tour highlighted many hidden gems in Lawrenceville. It felt like we traveled around the world as we tried Greek, Italian, Lebanese, German, and more amazing food! While we walked through Lawrenceville our guide Sylvia pointed out pieces of art and history. This was such a fun experience and so much fun to try many different foods and learn more about this Pittsburgh neighborhood.”

Eating My Way Through Pittsburgh’s Strip District on a Burgh Bits and Bites Food Tour

Burgh Bites and Bites Food Tour in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

One of my favorite things about visiting large cities is the variety of food. No matter what type of food you want, no matter how distant, you can probably find it in a large city. However, with so many options, it can be hard to experience everything. That’s one of the reasons why food tours can be so much fun.

I’ve visited Pittsburgh many times over the years I’ve been writing UncoveringPA, but I never really felt like I had fully explored the many great culinary options in the city. Fortunately, during a recent trip to Pittsburgh, I was invited to take a food tour with Burgh Bits and Bites.

Burgh Bits and Bites has been running food tours in Pittsburgh since 2008, expanding from one tour in the Strip District to six different tours throughout the city. While I’d love to go back and take their other tours, I opted to start off with their original tour through the Strip District.

Strip District in Pittsburgh

The Strip District has long been a destination in Pittsburgh . During the 19th century, industry thrived in this section of the city. The thousands of workers that came into the area every day created a great demand for food and restaurants. As industry began moving out of the Strip District in the mid-2oth century, more restaurants, grocers, and food purveyors moved into the area.

Today, the Strip District is one of the best destinations for foodies in Pennsylvania. Packed within this one-half square mile of land are dozens of restaurants ranging from classics like Primanti’s to ethnic foods from a variety of cultures around the world.

The Burgh Bits and Bites Food Tour through Pittsburgh’s Strip District included eight samples of food over the course of two and a half hours.

Burgh Bits and Bites Food Tour Starting Point

Tours began in the courtyard of Old St. Patrick’s Church. After a brief introduction, we were treated to our first sample, a delicious piece of cinnamon bread from Mancini’s. While eating, we were able to look inside this very unique and historic church.

From St. Patrick’s we wound our way through the Strip District, stopping for six more samples, as well as in a few interesting shops. Tastings are always subject to change, but on my tour, we had the chance to sample both savory and sweet foods. There was enough food that no one went away hungry.

Burgh Bits and Bites Food Tour: Jimmy & Nino Sunseri Co in the Strip District of Pittsburgh

My personal favorites included homemade sausage at Parma Sausage, the hummus at Labad’s and the pierogies at S&D Polish Deli. However, I can honestly say that every sample that we had was quite delicious, and I’d love to check out each one again.

During the tour, we weren’t just treated to samples, but also a great deal of information on the history of both the Strip District and Pittsburgh as a whole. While I consider myself fairly knowledgable about Pittsburgh, I learned a lot of interesting tidbits while on the tour.

Burgh Bits and Bites Food Tour in the Strip District of Pittsburgh

Overall, I really enjoyed my food tour of the Strip District with Burgh Bits and Bites Food Tours. Going on a tour with up to a dozen other people and the number of people on the sidewalks can make things a bit chaotic at times. However, the guides do a good job ensuring the tours keep moving at a good pace and that people don’t get lost in the fray on the busy and narrow streets in the Strip District.

On your next visit to Pittsburgh , take time to explore the many fantastic culinary opportunities in the Strip District or elsewhere in the city on a Burgh Bits and Bites Food Tour.

Note: My tour with Burgh Bits and Bites was hosted by the company. However, the opinions expressed are my own.

We were visiting Pittsburgh for the weekend and thought this tour would be a fun family activity. We had 15 people in our group and although I think it is a bigger group than usual for this tour, it went well. We started at Salonika Imports for a nice selection that included Greek yogurt, feta cheese, eggplant spread and a fig. It was a great grouping of wonderful flavors. I tried to attach a picture of us enjoying lasagna at Senti Restaurant but it was blurry. :-) Everyone agreed it was the best lasagna they ever had! I won't name all of the places we stopped, so you will be surprised when you book! It was well worth the price. All of the food and the non-food stop was fabulous. Our tour guide, Patrick, was personable and knew a lot of history. We had ages 11-80 in our group and all were happy with it.

Bravo! My friend and I took the Strip District tour on a Monday and we had Mary as our trusty guide. She was just fantastic! Knowledgeable and friendly, she taught us so much about the local business owners and their passion for what they do. We learned about everything from "greens & beans" to the Pittsburgh Cookie Table. (The latter is something we also do here in Northeast Ohio too- my Italian family has THE best cookie tables!) But the FOOD.....oh my goodness. We sampled quite a bit. My favorites were the fresh baked pepperoni roll from Sunseri (that bread is SO fresh!) and the creamy, smooth, flavorful hummus from Labad's. I am still dreaming of that tahini and olive oil flavor. What a fun group- 12 is a great number for a food tour. We had one seasoned local on our tour who was so sweet and passionate about everything we ate- it was fun to see him delight in everything he had tasted. He probably could be giving tours himself! I loved everything about this and I hope I get to come back and do another tour with my parents. We also met the owner, Sylvia. You have built something wonderful here, my dear! Keep up the great work!

My company took us on a tour of the Strip District. We had Richard as our tour guide and he was absolutely fantastic!! So knowledgeable, friendly and fun. You could really tell the owners of the business we went to really loved Richard. The food was all delicious and the information about each place we visited was very interesting. I highly recommend booking a tour!!

This was our first food tour. We visited Saxonburg. Sylvia was excellent! We enjoyed the beautiful scenery, wonderful food and treats and learned some cool facts along the way. We are already looking forward to planning our next tour!

This is a fantastic tour! We did the Brookline tour, which took us to six great locations all located on the same strip within a couple blocks of each other. Pitaland was by far our favorite stop--it was so cool to see the pita being made on the conveyor belt and to be able to get it fresh from the oven. Our guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. Be prepared for good portion sizes and come hungry! We thought bits and bites would mean small servings at each location, but we were incredibly well fed. Before the tour even finished, we were talking about which one we wanted to do next!

We had an amazing morning with Sylvia touring Brookline and the cutest spots. Our favorite spot was Pitaland and meeting Joe. The rich family history and the delicious Mediterranean food was 10/10. Was such a fun way to spend a Saturday morning. Highly recommend!

Tasty food, friendly tour guide, and Pittsburgh history. I mean what more can you ask for? I toured Brookline. There is street parking. Cheryl was my guide and she was fabulous! The almond torte at party city was delectable. My favorite was watching the fresh pitas being made over at Pitaland. The hummus was so fresh. Listening to the owner speak about being an immigrant and his history was so heartwarming. As the tour group congregated outside an employee from another store (not on the tour) came out and offered sample biscottis. What a bonus! I had so much food left over, as there was no way to eat it all. If you're hesitant, let this review be the answer. Book this tour ASAP!!

Cheryl was fantastic and did a wonderful job guiding our Bits and Bites tour of Brookline. The tour was great, as were all the food stops. Food was delicious ( so much food) and Cheryl was so informative about each stop, explaining the history of each business and of the town of Brookline. I highly recommend this tour.

We did the Lawrenceville tour this afternoon with Emma, and had so much fun! The food was delicious, the history was fun to learn about and the company was perfect :) we only walked about 6 blocks total, so it was very doable for all kinds of folks. I would highly recommend booking!

I have been on a lot of food tours and this one did not disappoint. Every single stop was exceptional. The tour started off with the guide giving us a water bottle, a Pittsburgh pretzel and a Burgh bits and bites tour bag. In total there was seven food stops given to us through the tour including the pretzel. The tour items on this particular day included Italian beef, milkshake, cupcake, pizza, candy and an empanada. Every single stop was delicious and you get an astounding amount of food. It was great! I even took my cupcake to go. We were a little unsure if we should go on the southside one because people told us it could be a little sketchy of an area but you'll be totally good during the tour! We never saw anything that made us uneasy during the tour. Would recommend choosing!

Burgh Bits and Bites Saxonburg Tour Review – History & Food

Burgh Bits and Bites is a popular food walking tour company in Pittsburgh with numerous tours throughout the city's neighborhoods.

But this company is also expanding to include tours outside the city limits, and one of their first of this style tour is in the historic borough of Saxonburg- located about 45 minutes northeast of the city.

We were guest of the Butler County Tourism and Convention Bureau on this tour, and share our thoughts of the day out in this one!

The Burgh Bits and Bites Tour Begins at the Saxonburg Museum

Saxonburg Museum

The food tour began with a quick tour of the Saxonburg Museum- a moderately sized museum located just off the main street that features an array of historical artifacts from the borough's 180+ year history.

Of note is the exhibit dedicated to John A. Roebling, a German immigrant who founded Saxonburg after purchasing over 1500 acres in 1851. About a decade later Mr. Roebling would then create a new technique for producing wire rope that would be used in many large and iconic suspension bridges in the country- most notably the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City.

Getting an appreciation of the history of the village is a great way to start the food tour because the historic sights continue throughout the day!

An Array of Historic Buildings and Snacks to Enjoy

Saxonburg, Pennsylvania

One of the things that we really loved about the Burgh Bits and Bites tour of Saxonburg is that it is as much a history tour as it is a food tour- going well beyond the museum tour mentioned above.

The reason for this is that more or less the entire town of Saxonburg is historic, with many of the buildings dating back to the 1830s with ties to John Roebling and his family. As such, while on the tour you are able to learn about the town's history while also sampling some of their businesses' creations.

Cinnamon Roll from Main Street Bake Shop

During our tour, we were able to try food from five businesses plus a welcome pretzel sandwich from Lil' Bean Cupcakes & More to kick off the tour. The storefronts visited included:

  • Mainstreet Bake Shop – A local bakery that specializes in cakes, monster cookies, and famous cinnamon rolls.
  • What's Cooking on Main – A diner in the heart of Saxonburg featuring homemade soups and sandwiches.
  • Saxonburg Coffee & Tea –  The local coffee shop with an assortment of coffees and teas.
  • Batch – Hand made products ranging from soaps and shirts to food including soups, jams, and breads!
  • Hotel Saxonburg – A historic hotel that once hosted Woodrow Wilson with on-site restaurant and bar.
  • …plus a few other retail oriented shops!

These shops also allowed for the tastings to come together for a full meal. Between a perfectly cooked cinnamon roll at Mainstreet Bake Shop, a cup of soup and a half sloppy Joe from What's Cooking on Main, an espresso at Saxonburg Coffee & Tea, another cup of soup at Batch with freshly prepared bread, and a quiche with a stellar texture at Hotel Saxonburg, we were quite stuffed (and that was before even touching the pretzel sandwich from Lil' Bean Cupcakes & More).

Quiche from Hotel Saxonburg

Suffice it to say, we left with a rather full to-go bag full of partially eaten items and a rich understanding of the historic town of Saxonburg as well!

Tea at Saxonburg Coffee and Tea

When it comes down to it, that is exactly the kind of tour we like, and we hope to make it back to Saxonburg quite soon to try more.

To book a tour, check out Burgh Bits and Bites . They have a number of tours available in Pittsburgh as well as the suburbs. This tour was a walking tour but was easily managed and only covered a few blocks over the course of 2 to 2 1/2 hours. We were invited onto the tour as guests of the Butler County Tourism and Convention Bureau.

6 Best Food Tours Where You’d Least Expect Them

Foodie cities like New York and Philadelphia offer a cornucopia of Culinary Walking Tours, but the following six - Frederick MD, Salem MA, Richmond VA, Pittsburgh PA, Providence RI, and Boston MA – would not be the first places you’d think of for first-class epicurean adventures. Food Tour operators have learned what chefs and beloveds have known for centuries; that the way to a human’s heart is through the stomach. Turns out, it’s also a way to present the history and culture of a neighborhood in a palatable, fun and engaging way. No surprise, then, that those culinary walking tours run by knowledgeable and jovial historians, who love food, are fast becoming the hottest ticket in every city. (As per usual - check out the GetawayMavens.com for the best advice on where to stay, where to eat and what to do in each of the six towns included below.)

1. Frederick MD: Taste Frederick Food Tour .

This 3-hour history-food walking tour provides the perfect overview of a little city on the move. With tastes at six restaurants/markets and visits to Carroll Creek Park and other historic venues, this tour is perfect if you’ve got only a few hours to spare. You’ll meet your guide (mine was the bubbly novelist, Jessica McHugh) at Pretzel & Pizza, and then head to N. Market Pop Shop, Brewer’s Ally, along Carroll Creek to Wine Kitchen, to the Theater District (the beautifully restored Weinberg Center for the Arts ), a pause in front of Town Hall to capture a photo of “The Clustered Spires” of Frederick’s churches mentioned in the poem by John Whittier, Barbara Fritchie , a stop at the “Spite House,” erected solely to halt the construction of a city road on private property, on to Firestone’s Market and finally for artisanal chocolate at Zoe’s, the “Official Chocolate of the 2011 Emmy Awards.” $89 for three hour tour and copious amounts of food.

2. Salem MA; TOUR: Salem Food Tour.

Yes, there is a food scene in Salem. I was skeptical, too, but no more. Karen Scalia, SAG Actor and foodie extraordinaire takes groups of up to 12 (8-10 is her “sweet spot”) on a four-hour, five stop, eye-opening cultural, epicurean and historical walking tour of Salem. FYI – you will be well fed. Start on Pickering Wharf, part of the Salem Maritime Historical Site , to learn about Salem’s role in the Spice Trade and of course try a few said spices. “Seventy five percent of what we taste is through the nose,” Scalia states, as she opens the door to AromaSanctum Perfumes where guests are encouraged to sniff apothecary bottles filled with musks, florals and undetermined scents. Next onto some of Scalia’s favorite restaurants, visits with chefs, and a kitchen tour and quick cooking class. This is Salem’s Number One Attraction, so book early. $54 per person, RSVP Required.

3. Richmond VA; Real Richmond Food Tours .

Real Richmond runs a series of ten neighborhood tours throughout the year, and if I lived in Richmond, I’d be signing up for every one. Susan Winiecki, editor of Richmond Magazine, and her guides, lead groups on a culinary exploration of Richmond’s neighborhoods, “taking to the streets to show you the inside scoop on what’s going on in Richmond today, seasoned with River City’s lively history and impressive architecture.” One example – Both Sides of Broad: The Art and Soul of Richmond – covers the gentrifying Arts District and the “Harlem of the South” – the Jackson Ward neighborhood. Home to free Blacks, immigrants and the working class pre-Civil War, this neighborhood claims the largest concentration of Antebellum houses with wrought ironwork second only to New Orleans. Trooping past tattoo parlors and empty storefronts, you’ll meander on sidewalks heaved up by roots of old trees to trendy cafes and coffee shops - indicative of the establishments that are re-wiring and “lifting” blighted neighborhoods from decay. Stop in to Southern-cooking, soul-food mecca, Mama J’s where Velma Johnson serves up some of the best collard greens, BBQ Ribs and Fried Chicken on the planet, and oyster-haven Rappahannock where you might find Chef Dylan Fultineer shucking those bi-vales at the front of the bar. Real Richmond is forever creating new tours, exploring new neighborhoods, and attracting, big surprise, a mostly local clientele. For very good reason. Most public tours are about 1.5 miles and run roughly 2 ½ to 3 hours and cost $56.60 per person.

4. Pittsburgh PA: TOUR: Burgh, Bits and Bites Food Tour .

Sylvia, founder of Burgh, Bits and Bites Food Tour, runs two-hour food tours in six diverse Pittsburgh neighborhoods. (That’s two hours in each ‘burg). Sign up for the Brookline Tour if you want a taste of old and traditional meshed with newfangled Pittsburgh establishments. According to one Yelper, Marne O, “When I was looking to buy a house, I turned to Brookline because I knew they had a great coffee shop and taco stand.” The coffee shop is Cannon Coffee – famous for its locally roasted coffee and Open Mic Wednesday Nights. The Taco Stand is right outside Las Palmas Mexican Grocery Store – and the tacos are so amazingly good, fans come from out of state, and there are lines down the street all year. But Brookline also has Pitaland , owned by Lebanese expat, Joe Chahine, who’s been coined “the Willy Wonka of Pita Making.” Chahine is more than happy to show you the apparatus that turns out 2,000 pitas an hour. You’ll watch the whole process from dough making to final product while learning about Joe’s American immigrant success story. And then, of course, you’ll get a taste of as many hot pitas (with humus) as you can eat. On Sylvia’s tour, you’ll try fresh-baked morsels at bakeries, a slice at Antionio’s Pizzeria and stop into Sal’s Barber Shop, which has been providing gentlemanly haircuts since 1947. Food tours $39 per person. Check website for dates and times.

5. Boston MA; Boston North End Market Tour

By the end of this enlightening, engaging and often-times hilarious three hour walking tour you’ll be stuffed with enough information about Boston’s North End (a toe-hold for immigrants since the American Revolution, with English, Irish, and Polish Jews coming and going until the early 1900’s when the Italians came to stay) and Italian culture and cuisine to hold court at any trattoria. You’ll experience “real deal” markets, bakeries and restaurants rather than the more “touristy” establishments. On Hanover St., you’ll stop into the lesser known but substantially more authentic Maria’s Pastry for a sampling of marvelous marzipan, amoretti and “lobster tails,” and walk down tiny Salem St. (which used to be Shalom St. when the Polish Jews were in residence) to experience the charms of Mom and Pop markets like Polcari’s Coffee, crammed-to-the- rafters with barrels of rare salted capers, dried carob seeds, real liquorish sticks and candied citrons among thousands of other items. While visiting and tasting your way through half a dozen small shops, you’ll learn about the difference between Italian cuisine and Italian-American cuisine, ways to alleviate “agita,” the cost and origin of bone fide Balsamic vinegar and what exactly D.O.P. means, and why you should care. Along the way, you sample baked goods, cheese, cold meats and wine, but not enough to give you “agita.” Wed., Fri., Sat. $57.

Cindy Salvato, Savor Federal Hill, Providence RI

Cindy Salvato, Savor Federal Hill, Providence RI

6. Providence RI: Savor Federal Hill with Cindy Salvato .

Federal Hill – the Little Italy of Providence RI - has always been an immigrant neighborhood. On this three-hour gut-busting walking tour, enjoy Antipasto plates, ravioli, breads, and sweets at Roma, Tony’s Colonial, Venda Ravioli, Venda Bar Pizzeria (the only Government of Italy DOP Certified Pizzeria in town) and other exceptional shops and restaurants on Federal Hill. Along the way, Salvato offers tutorials in selecting the best pasta, olive oil and cheese. You’ll end up inches from 15 ft. deep 1920 gas-fired-ovens in the kitchen of Scialo (pronounced “shallow”) Brothers Bakery, now run by two Scialo Sisters, Carol and Lois. Watching the industrious bakers create delectable cakes and cookies from scratch is, alone, worth the price of the tour. Saturdays in season 9am-12, $55 pp.
