Maroon Bells - Important Information
The Maroon Bells are a popular destination for hikers, particularly in July when the alpine meadows are in full bloom or in late September when the aspen trees turn amber yellow. Road cycling enthusiasts can enjoy riding their bikes up Maroon Creek Road, and campers can find peaceful solitude in the small National Forest Service campgrounds located along the hiking trails beyond the lake. As the most photographed mountains in North America, the Maroon Bells draw travelers from around the world to experience their beauty and breathtaking natural surroundings.
The Maroon Bells wilderness area is located approximately 10 miles from downtown Aspen, 8 miles from the Aspen Highlands Visitor Center, and 5 miles from the Forest Service gate on Maroon Creek Road. The Maroon Bells bus departs from the Aspen Highlands Visitor Center, where parking is available for a fee on weekdays ($10 for 0-3 hours, $15 for 3-8 hours, $25 for 8+ hours). A free Castle/Maroon bus also runs from Aspen to Aspen Highlands every 20 minutes on the hour. If you need transportation to the Maroon Bells outside of the regular shuttle hours, consider contacting Blazing Adventures for alternative transportation options. "We spent a fantastic day hiking Lost Man Loop with Blazing Adventures. Our guide was delightful, a great guide, very engaging and his geology knowledge (he studied it at university) made the landscape come alive. I highly recommend a day out with Blazing Adventures."
"Our guide took us on a fun and fact filled hike to the Maroon Bells. She was nothing short of gracious and helped us pose for awesome vacation photos. We learned how the mountains and lakes were formed as well as about the local flora and fauna. She even made sure we spotted the young bull moose hiding in the woods across the river. Highly recommend."
"We did a guided hike up to crater lake / maroon bells. While we could have easily done this alone, the guide added a lot of local knowledge about the geology and wildlife. All in all I highly recommend Blazing Adventures."

The Maroon Bells are two of the most photographed mountains in all of North America — and for good reason. Rising more than 14,000 feet above sea level just south of Aspen, the twin peaks are striped with snow all summer long. Aspen trees drape the hillsides, while Maroon Lake provides a handy mirror that grounds the whole scene in a postcard-perfect reflection.
Hiking remains the best way to experience the unparalleled beauty of the area, especially in July when the alpine meadows bloom with a profusion of flowers, or in late September as the Aspen trees turn an amber yellow. Road cyclists love to ride their bikes up Maroon Creek Road, and campers can find a rewarding solitude in the small National Forest Service campgrounds that line the hiking trails beyond the lake.
