Chile, the ‘bootlace’ of South America! 2500 miles long from the Atacama dessert in the north to the glaciers of Patagonia in the south, and yet only 90 miles from west to east at its widest point! An exciting and stunningly beautiful country whose wine industry has made huge strides in quality and diversity in the last 20 years.
Main Regions
The wine regions are mostly concentrated within 100 miles of the capital Santiago. To the south are Maipo, Colchagua, Curico and Maule valleys, and to the north and west Aconcagua, Casablanca Leyda, and San Antonio. Further north are the arid, dry, almost desert-like, Limari and Elqui valleys, famous for crystal-clear skies and some of the world’s best stargazing.
Main Grapes
‘International’ grape varieties dominate and the most widely planted whites are Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, followed by Semillon and Riesling. Cabernet Sauvignon is by far the most widely planted black grape followed by Merlot and Syrah. Carmenere, which was originally from Bordeaux, has become Chile’s signature grape. Pais, which used to be the most widely planted grape and known as Mission, is often now used in blends and bulk wines.
Terroir & Climate
With the Andes to the east and the coastal ranges to the west, the vineyards are in the intervening valleys. The Andes bring cool air and snowmelt for irrigation. The Pacific Ocean brings a strong maritime influence, and the Humboldt current from Antarctica generates cool onshore breezes. 80% of country is mountainous, and this somewhat chaotic terrain gives rise to variety of different aspects, exposures and soils.
With its very dry climate and sandy soils Chile has remained free of the phylloxera louse, and so the country’s grapevines don’t need to be grafted with phylloxera-resistant rootstocks. Chile has a perfect climate for organic viticulture.

Tour Suggestions in Chile
Luxury Wine Tours & Tasting in Chile
Why visit chile .
Chile, though a small country in South America, produces some of the most well-known new world wines in the world. These wines are not priced too high but guarantee good quality standards and appeal to the modernized palates of young consumers. A wine tour in Chile will take you through the ever-changing wine regions of the country to experience the constant advances in wine production techniques.
What to know About Chile Wine ?
The region of Colchagua is home to some of the best modern wineries in Chile. By combining new technology with innovative processes, the wineries of the Colchagua Valley make the area one of the most promising hotspots for wine connoisseurs. Producing largely reds, many of which are world-class, the region boasts some of the most influential varieties across the world.
You’ll find a range of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere and the Syrah grape varieties. Compared to its northerly cousin Maipo , temperatures are cooler yet still of a Mediterranean style climate. This means that the white wines benefit closer to the coast where there’s a delightful ocean breeze. Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are a must by the sea.
The other main wine destination to visit is Santiago , the capital of Chilean wines. There are organic vineyards and exclusive wineries surrounding the city – and more hectares of vines than Bordeaux in France!
The Casablanca Valley provides a change from typical reds to sampling crisp whites and cold-climate Pinot Noirs at the Kingston Family Vineyards ahead of a memorable food and wine afternoon in Casablanca .
Best Time to Visit Chile
With the Atacama Desert in the north to the central region where the weather resembles the Mediterranean, there’s somewhere to go year-round.
Many visitors find that the shoulder seasons of spring (September to November) or autumn (March to May) are ideal as the weather is warm and crowds are few.
The summer months (December to February) attract the most tourists, but even when it gets busy there’s still a sense of being off the beaten path in many of our tour locations.
During the winter (June to August), temperatures are much cooler, but rarely ever falling below 15°C / 5°F (although some regions will see snowfall).
For festivals, summer is the time to book your trip. Or to catch the wine harvest, plan to arrive from late February to May. Wine harvesting festivals known as Vendimias feature grape stomping, music, food and tastings. Chile's wineries are open throughout the year though, and can be fantastic for tours from summer to winter.
Distance from Santiago
Santiago, the capital of Chile, is centrally located in the country. Here are approximate distances from Santiago to some key destinations in Chile:
- Santiago to Valparaiso > Approximately 120 kilometers ≈ 75 miles (By Car 1.5 to 2 hours)
- Santiago to Viña del Mar > 120 kilometers ≈ 75 miles (By Car 1.5 to 2 hours)
- Santiago to Mendoza, Argentina > 365 kilometers ≈ 227 miles (By Plane 1 to 1.5 hour)
- Santiago to La Serena > Approximately 470 kilometers ≈ 292 miles (By Plane 1 to 1.5 hour)

Why Visit Maipo Valley?
Landed in Santiago and looking for a tour to the Maipo Valley? For a truly authentic and immersive wine travel experience, choose from one of our locally guided wine tasting tours and vineyard visits to Chile’s oldest and most traditional wine regions. It is the closest wine region to Santiago, making it a great destination for shorter tours or day trips into the countryside. You can explore the Maipo Valley on a private or group tour or on a fully-tailor made experience .
Often referred to as the birthplace of Chilean wine, French-inspired vineyards initiated Chile’s second wine boom some 150 years ago and are partially responsible for the Maipo Valley’s famed Cabernet Sauvignon – still by far the region’s most prized grape – as well as home to some of the finest Carmenere in Chile.
Needless to say, the Maipo Valley has tons of wineries to visit. Many tours leave from Santiago and include visits to some of the most famous wineries and vineyards in the Maipo Valley. Concha y Toro Winery in the Pirque commune is one of the most picturesque, featuring guided tours through gorgeous antique gardens and the winery’s storied ancient cellars. Following the winery tour, you’ll be treated to a tasting of their incredible selection of wines (and cheese!). To round out the experience, you can pick up a bottle or two to share with friends and family back home. Santa Rita is also another beautiful winery we recommend visiting.
Things to do in Santiago
Though great wine is enough of an attraction, the Maipo Valley doesn’t stop there. Just northeast lies the Chilean capital of Santiago, home to some incredible sights, sounds, and most of all, tastes. To get the most out of Santiago, we recommend hopping on a wine tour complete with comfy transport, a multilingual guide, and of course, local snacks to keep you fuelled on your journey through the city. Beginning in Santiago’s historic downtown, enjoy some of the city centre’s best architectural gems before venturing out into the surrounding residential districts, such as the belle-epoque style Lastarria neighborhood. If it’s views you’re looking for, you will also have the opportunity to take in the stunning sights of San Cristobal Hill, offering sweeping panoramic views of the city and mountains. Of course, the day wouldn’t be complete without a little more Chilean wine! After a journey through Santiago, you can choose from either the Aquitania Wine Vineyard or the Cousiño Macul Wine Vineyard, both of which sit at the foot of the Andes and offer a comprehensive and delicious look into the Chilean wine industry.
Things to do in the Maipo Valley
The Maipo Valley and surrounding areas have lots of things to do in the way of hiking, walking and biking. For a relatively easy trek, you might consider a hike to the summit of Cerro Manquehuito, located right in the Lo Curro neighborhood of Santiago. This is a well-traveled and clearly marked path that only takes one or two hours to complete, leaving you plenty of time to get back to your true calling: wine. The Maipo Valley is also home to Cajon del Maipo, a great area for hiking, rafting, and outdoor adventures. A great extension to a wine visit in the valley would be a hike through El Morado National Park. The area is also home to natural hot springs if you are longing for a little rest and relaxation following all that tiring wine tasting! You can join a wine tour on bike or combine trekking with visits to the Maipo Valley 's famous vineyards.

From Santiago
Wine tours from santiago | private & custom-designed.
Our wine tours from Santiago are a blend of two main elements. An introduction to Chilean wine on your first night here, with a guided tasting at a wine bar. Then the next morning we start our selection of full-day adventures out to the wineries, how far you travel and how long that adventure will be, is entirely up to you!
What does the “ideal” Santiago-based program include?
- Private pick up and transfer upon arrival in Santiago
- Comfy hotel in a great location, Vitacura or Las Condes
- Introductory tasting on your first evening, at a great venue
- Many options on full-day trips visiting contrasting wineries
- Wine experiences in Santiago, Pirque, and Isla de Maipo
- Private guide and driver just for you and your group
- Premium tastings, tours with owners or winemakers
- Traditional food at wineries or local restaurants
Gary and Malka will be your hosts while you are here in Chile, from your airport pickups and transfers, through all the tastings, visits and tours they will always be with you.
Remember: Everything we do is modular and custom-designed . This means you can add easily destinations to your Santiago wine tour. For example, that might be a couple of nights in Colchagua. Maybe you would like to blend in a cultural or outdoor destination such as Atacama, Easter Island , or Patagonia? Chile is very well connected with short flights, so let us suggest an itinerary and deal with the logistics.
Your First Night in Santiago
You have been picked up by us at the airport, driven to, and checked into your comfy hotel, enjoyed a hot shower, and you are now ready for a drink and to have something to eat. Sound about right?
So early evening we will swing by to take you to your introductory tasting. We work with a number of wine bars and “vinotecas” which are perfect for enjoying your first taste of Chilean wine on native soil. Your wine guide will take you through a flight of regional highlights with some local cheese and bread. We may choose an ancient bush vine Carignan from Itata, a tree-climbing Pais from Maule or a high altitude Carmenere from Aconcagua. You will enjoy 4 or 5 wines that differ in a number of ways and guide you through the geography and terroir that they express.
After the tasting, if you want to continue drinking at the same place or move on then that we can do. There are a large number of eating and drinking options nearby. Tired? If so we will walk back with you and bid you goodnight at your hotel.
Next Morning – Historic vs. Cutting Edge
Today we start our exploration of Chilean winery contrasts. Firstly we will take you for a tour and tasting at an iconic Santiago winery that is a national treasure, Cousiño Macul. Later you will enjoy a great lunch, then tour and taste at the high-tech, modern architectural marvel that is Haras de Pirque. Along the way, we will add another visit to add extra interest and fun to your day, which will remain a surprise for now.
The Cousiño Macul winery was founded in 1856 and obviously at that time it did not lie within urban Santiago, now it does. When we arrive we will enjoy a morning glass of wine to get our motors running and then it’s off to have a look at some of the vineyards.
After getting close up and personal with the all-important plants themselves, we will have a tour around some of the original buildings and equipment, some production areas, and of course the historic underground cellars. Along the way, we will try a couple more wines and at the end of the walkabout, we will taste a further 2 or 3 more premium wines in the comfort of the historic patio with a little bread and cheese to keep us fueled.
Onward we go, back to the vehicle and driving out into the nearby countryside for around 40 minutes. There are a number of options we can opt for en-route and the beauty of a private tour is we can adapt to your interests.
Arriving at the impressive Haras de Pirque we will have lunch in the lovely restaurant first, as you will probably be hungry at this stage, and then enjoy a tour and tasting of this Antinori property. The rest of our afternoon is spent here with some time to simply relax and sip with the view you see above before we head back into the city and drop you at your hotel.
Gary shot the drone footage below when he wasn’t as good at flying and filming as he is now (he is still not great he admits!), but you can see how Haras de Pirque is a really spectacular winery. We can personally confirm that it’s a real treat to spend time lunching, sipping, and wandering around here.
Second Morning – Large scale vs. Boutique
Today we venture into the nearby countryside and show you an interesting contrast in scale and history. We will be enjoying the historic powerhouse of Viña Santa Rita first. The vineyards you will see to the left as we drive in are shared with Viña Carmen, a sister winery and the oldest in Chile. Viña Carmen is not only Chiles’s first winery (founded in 1850) but these vineyards are the place where Carmenere was “re-discovered” in 1994.
Santa Rita came into being in 1880 so it too is steeped in winemaking history. The beauty here is that unlike Carmen, you can actually visit Santa Rita, and what a great visit it is.
Upon arrival, some 60 minutes after leaving your hotel, we will tour the production facility, some of the original buildings, the underground cellars plus enjoy a tasting of course. Something unusual in a winery is an Andean Museum, Santa Rita has one which we can visit if you are interested. The on-site hotel in its own private park is quite a place, we can arrange a quick look round but be warned, you might want to stay.
To be fair you could spend hours at this winery, there is a cafe in the original winery bakery with one of the original train carriages inside! There is a great wine store in a wing of the old hacienda which also houses an excellent restaurant. So you can see how the time could just disappear. BUT we do need to move on to the boutique winery visit, where we will have lunch.
The LOF winery is a recent family venture and their small estate vineyards were planted with Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon in 2008. Just 900 bottles were produced in the first vintage. Each year this number has increased and the aim is to produce 6,000 bottles of each variety.
We will have lunch at the family home when we arrive, trying their two wines while we chat, as you can see above. The experience is very intimate and it is a real pleasure to spend time with these lovely people. After we have eaten we will tour the brand new facility and the surrounding vines and see how they do it.
At some point, although we know you won’t want to leave, we need to get you back to your Santiago hotel. In our experience, most of the way back will be spent asleep!

Wine tours in Chile & Tasting
By: Chile Travel - 28 August, 2021
If you are a wine enthusiast and would like to enjoy a fresh take on this fascinating drink, we invite you to discover wine tours in Chile. Grab a glass and explore the wonderful tourist attractions in the beautiful valleys where the vines are grown. From north to south, you will find important vineyards that produce some of the most outstanding wines in the world and that will open your palate to new experiences.
Elqui Valley and Limarí Valley
Located in the Coquimbo Region, 500 kilometers north of Santiago, the Elqui Valley is the northern border of Chile’s winemaking territories. One of the main hubs for stargazing and astrotourism, the valley is also renowned for its Cabernet Sauvignon and its production of pisco, a type of grape brandy that is very popular in Chile and one of the best wine tours in Chile. For those interested in learning more about the history of pisco, visit the Los Nichos artisanal distillery and the Capel pisco distillery, where you will be able to prepare cocktails and visit their museum.
The Viña Falernia and Cavas del Valle wineries are open to the public if you would like to learn more about the winemaking process, taste wines, and have lunch at their local restaurants. The Limarí Valley is in a different sector of the Coquimbo Region, characterized by the production of white grapevines and fresh reds due to its mineral-rich terroir. Its Mediterranean climate has a strong sea influence, which favors the production of exquisite wines.
For those who wish to follow some of the best wine routes in northern Chile, there are tours of the Limarí Valley and the mythical El Encanto Valley, to see the remains of pre-Colombian villages. You can also visit many different wineries such as Agua Tierra, Tamaya and Tabalí. The latter offers a guided tour of its facilities, with wine and cheese tasting sessions, and a stop to enjoy a typical lunch in the Chilean countryside.
The tour of the Agua Tierra winery includes music, local cuisine and a party. Finally, Viña Tamaya offers a particular visit to a rural cemetery inside its winery. You may also climb one of the two viewpoints overlooking Mount Tamaya.
The Aconcagua Valley stands out for its privileged location between Santiago and Valparaíso. This is where Viña Errázuriz is located, one of the world’s most renowned wineries and one of the best wine tours in Chile. A visit to this vineyard includes a walk with beautiful views of the valley, century-old wineries and wine tasting. Nearly adjacent to Errázuriz is Von Siebenthal, a traditional winery with sophisticated technology and wines from grapevines such as Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Carménère and Petit Verdot.
The Aconcagua Valley also offers other attractions and activities, such as pre-Colombian petroglyphs found in the San Esteban vineyard, visiting the Portillo ski resort, trekking to Mount Aconcagua and kayaking in the Laguna del Inca, home to one of Chile’s most moving legends.
Just an hour and a half from Santiago lies the Casablanca Valley , where you will find one of the most outstanding wine tours in Chile, home to a dozen vineyards specially dedicated to serve wine tourism enthusiasts. Apart from wines and tastings, they offer fine cuisine and a wide range of activities. Vineyards such as Santa Rita, Concha y Toro, Santa Emiliana, Santa Carolina and Morandé offer wine tastings, horse-drawn carriage rides and restaurant lunches.
At House of Morandé, a chef makes five-star preparations to marry the wines. Attend organic wine tastings at Viña Emiliana, have lunch at Casas del Bosque and enjoy panoramic views at Viña Indomita. Viña Puro Caballo offers traditional Huaso (Chilean cowboy) and horse shows.
San Antonio Valley
One hour away from the port of San Antonio is one of Chile’s newest wine regions: the San Antonio Valley . Its vineyards stand out for the production of fine white wines, yet their reds also boast top quality and flavors. The Casa Marín, Garcés Silva, Leyda and Matetic wineries focus on the production of premium wines, recognized both nationally and abroad.
Visit the wineries of San Antonio during your visit to the Valparaiso region. It is one of the newest wine tours in Chile with state-of-the-art tourism infrastructure.
Colchagua and Cachapoal Valley
This is one of the most prestigious valleys in the country, with a wide variety of wine tours in Chile. It is close enough to Santiago that you may want to stay overnight or simply visit during the day. Here you will find two outstanding valleys: Colchagua and Cachapoal, whose wines stand out in world rankings thanks to their varieties of Cabernet, Carménère, Syrah and Malbec.
The Colchagua Valley is undoubtedly one of the best wine routes in Chile and offers more than a dozen wineries open to the public, where you can sample wines, go hiking, participate in culinary demonstrations, ride bicycles and go horseback riding. The Colchagua Valley is ideal for a romantic getaway, and was chosen by Lonely Planet as one of the best places in the world to spend a honeymoon thanks to its beautiful landscapes combined with dreamy hotels and delicious restaurants.
You may also ride the Sabores del Valle (“Flavors of the Valley”) train excursion, which takes you to discover the flavors and aromas of the Colchagua Association’s vineyard. You will tour the Colchagua Museum, which has a private collection of antique cars as well as objects from several periods in the history of Chile and the rest of the world.
The Santa Cruz Vineyard is a veritable landmark of this area. One of its features is a cable car that goes up to the top of Mount Chamán, where you can admire the constellations at the observatory bearing the same name. The Cachapoal valley offers a number of tourist programs that include tours of the vineyards, their wineries and facilities, as well as bicycle rides, horseback riding and countryside barbecues.
Viña Altair offers a nightly wine tour, the first of the southern cone, which begins with a horseback ride to a viewpoint to appreciate first-hand the fruit and the tasting of Sideral, the vineyard’s ultra-premium wine. Alternatively, you can visit the winery during the day. The tour includes a horseback ride to Alto El Aguila, to enjoy a lunch served with wine from Viña Altair.
Maipo Valley
Near Santiago is the Maipo Valley , which houses the main headquarters of Chile’s great traditional wineries, such as Concha y Toro, Tarapacá, Carmen, Santa Rita, Cousiño Macul and Barón de Rothschild. Here you can learn about the history of Carménère, a vine of French origin that was thought to be extinct, but was brought back to life in the central valleys of Chile.
You can also visit the Veramonte vineyards, another wine tours in Chile and taste their reserve wines; visit Viña Emiliana, an organic vineyard featuring a garden with farm animals; and explore Viña Catrala, its winery and barrel cellar, tasting their wines and local cheeses. In Santiago, many hotels offer transportation and tours to the Maipo Valley, a must for those visiting the Chilean capital.
Early in the 1980’s, the Spanish enologist Miguel Torres was a pioneer in numerous storage techniques, bringing about significant developments in the Chilean wine sector and in this valley in particular. It is also home to one of the Chile’s largest wineries, Viña San Pedro. Chile’s largest harvest festival is held during March and April, with traditional activities such as grape-crushing competitions and the election of the grape harvest queen.
The Curicó Valley Wine Route allows you to visit the many different vineyards in this area and taste renowned wines in underground cellars over a hundred years old.
This is the Chile’s largest valley and one of its oldest. In fact, along with the other wine valleys of the Maule Region, it claims the title of “the cradle of Chilean wine”. Its production of this beverage dates back to the time of the Spanish conquerors. Some of the varieties found in this area are Carignan, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec.
The Casa Donoso, Carpe Diem and Balduzzi wineries open their doors to visitors and offer lodging services, high quality dining and other activities such as horseback riding and trekking.
Itata Valley
The Itata Valley itinerary includes visits to wineries such as Casanueva, Del Alba, Tierra de Arrau, Casas de Giner, among others. Here you will learn about the wine production process from the harvest –depending on the season– and taste varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Carménère, Merlot, Tintórera, Semillón, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Of course, served together with the local cuisine of the Ñuble Region.
Bíobío Valley
The Bíobío Valley has a particular microclimate, perfect for growing shorter-cycle red and white varieties for wine tours in Chile. Some of the activities that can be enjoyed in this valley include classic horseback and bicycle excursions, and winery visits such as Agustinos and Veranda, as well as boat rides along the Bureo River and lunches served with special local wines.
Malleco Valley
This is Chile’s southernmost winemaking area, with producers in the districts of Angol, Lumaco, Traiguén, Ercilla, Victoria, Purén, among others, featuring varieties such as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The wonderful landscapes of the Araucanía region, brimming with reddish volcanic soils and low temperatures, are ideal for the production of distinctive wines. Some of the region’s most outstanding vineyards are Aquitania, Los Colonos, Viñedos de La Araucanía and Wiliam Févre.
