Cape Canopy Tour

In hot pursuit of adrenalin adventure in nature?

A zipline canopy tour in the company of soaring eagles, surrounded by breath-taking Cape fynbos panoramas and mountainscapes only an hour’s drive from Cape Town by car could well be exactly what you are looking for. Thrilled zipliners who have completed the course have described it as super safe. One commented that the quality of the structure and equipment was reassuringly high and had made her fear of heights irrelevant.

Lonely Planet recently listed Cape Canopy Tour, located in the Elgin Valley near Grabouw and scaling the rugged Hottentots Holland mountains in the Cape Nature reserve of the same name, as second on the list of the world’s hottest new tourism experiences for 2015. Cape Canopy Tour was the only African attraction to make the list! It has been described by Lonely Planet as “vertigo-tinged fun” and “an exciting aerial perspective”.

Situated in the Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve, we have partnered with CapeNature to take you into a previously inaccessible and pristine part of this amazing World Heritage Site. Only one hour from Cape Town, we offer a fully guided adventure activity for nature enthusiasts of ages 5 to 75!

51,000 people have enjoyed this experience, and counting.

“Cape Canopy Tour gave us an unforgettable experience in the Hottentots Holland Mountains. This is one of my top three favourite ziplines in South Africa! The staff are professional and very knowledgeable about the nature reserve. The guides have had years of experience in the reserve, and it shows. I would highly recommend it to anyone, even if scared of heights. The guides ensure proper processes are followed and put you at ease, allowing you to soak up the beautiful surroundings.”   Abduraghmaan Van Oordt
“We went on a Cape Canopy Tour for a father and daughters adventure day. Our guides were friendly, professional and funny. They made us feel safe. We will recommend this to everyone.”   Geri Fortune
“What an experience! I went on a Cape Canopy Tour with my family, and it was a great outing. Getting to see nature from this point of view was incredible and truly breathtaking. Our tour guides were amazing and added humour to our morning while helping those with a fear of heights get through it. I highly recommend doing this.”  Jodie Pienaar

    • Kelly B 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles DO THIS! It is an incredible experience! This was one of our favorite days in South Africa. We traveled with our four kids ages 18 to 26. The views were incredible, the guides were entertaining, the equipment was updated, everything about the day is highly recommended. The guides were very in tune to my son was special-needs and his fears. After his first two jumps, they realized he wanted to quit and turn around. They had an incredible partnership between the two of them and made my son choose to stay. They were able to ride tandem with him for every ride following. We did all think the one km hike at the end seemed a lot longer, but probably because it is uphill. Just be prepared. Read more Written March 4, 2024
    • Shirley_md_memories 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Possibly one of my top 3 adventures, wow and or the more special doing this with family I am going to be honest this is a one where I said to myself what have I booked us into but wow highlight of an amazing South African holiday. Recommended this adventure by our South African friends. Went with myself and family , husband and 3 kids. Bumpy well so I thought getting to the place , friendly reception and some other adventurers had just returned and were buzzing. Went through safety talk and then kitted up. We had 2 guides Ngoni and Ronwill and off we went off road . This is possibly the most bumpiest drive going through a valley and slow climb up the mountain. I am not great with heights so there was a lot of eyes closed as we headed up along side mountain tracks. When we got to the top the realisation of what we were about to do hit home. As my youngest was so light it was decided for the first few zips Ronwill would ‘Uber her across. At all times Ronwill and Ngoni were on point with safety , reminding us of how to position when zipping , on the platforms. Massive shout out to Ngoni and Ronwill, they relaxed our nerves, particularly mine and made us laugh so much . They have walkie-talkies and constantly in touch and we loved the nicknames that they gave us all. There were times when I wasn’t ready and the guides were so patient. Cape Canopy Tour provided by Cape Canopy Tour

A brand new breathtaking zipline adventure awaits under an hour’s drive from Cape Town

It’s been a while coming, but in early August 2014, a high-as-the-heavens canopy tour opened to the public in the mountains of the Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve in Elgin, a region that lies only a short one-hour highway glide away from the built-up skeleton of the city. Of course, the mere addition of this spectacular zipline activity to the Western Cape’s repertoire is exciting enough, but the real drawcard is that it gives locals and tourists the chance to explore an untouched, untarnished part of the province that was previously completely unreachable (it’s not even possible to hike here).

“It’s really quite surreal,” sums up Ryan Larkman, co-founder of the Cape Canopy Tour. “You’ve got a bird’s-eye view of the spectacular scenery...you look to one side and there’s a waterfall, look to the other side and there’s a steep cliff face.”

Eleven stainless steel slides (some up to 320m in length) and one lofty suspension bridge connect 13 wooden platforms that are built into rocky precipices never before seen by man, and thrill-seekers and nature lovers can spend a few solid hours soaring over pristine gorges and far-below running rivers that sit like sweet unspoiled secrets in one of the most stunning, well-preserved parts of South Africa.

And appreciating the breathtaking surrounds is as much a part of the whole experience as the fun and excitement of flying through the clouds from one escarpment to the next. For this reason, the excursion is led by at least two professional guides from the local community who chat to patrons throughout the tour about the history of the area and the fauna and flora that unfolds in front of them.

“It’s not just about the slide; it’s an intimate guided nature experience,” says Ryan, adding, “People mustn’t think of it as just a zip line, but as a whole tour.”

Of course, the chaperons are also there to ensure guests’ safety, an issue that’s taken very seriously throughout the expedition. All adventurers are harnessed up and given an in-depth briefing before they’re taken up to the tippy-top of the often snow-capped mountains, all the equipment, which adheres to the highest safety standards, is regularly checked and double-checked and all kiddies are asked to ride in tandem with guides to keep them extra secure.

Speaking of kids, anyone as young as five or six can do the tour, as long as they fit comfortably into a harness. And on the other side of the age spectrum, grans and grandpas of 80 and above are welcome – they just need to be able to manage the 1-km trek out of the valley and back to the 4x4 after all the slipping and sliding is done.

The walk back should be easy, though, considering there’s extra motivation to return to reception: a tasty lunch (it’s included in the tour price) awaits groups back at base camp. So, once zip liners have worked up quite the appetite from all the adrenaline, they can bring the experience to a close with food fit for an explorer while overlooking the very valley they sailed over just moments before.

Tip: Be sure to bring along comfy shoes for the walking – avoid wearing flip-flops as these will likely fall off while you’re sliding. Also, make sure you have warm clothes on you as even on the sunniest days it can still be chilly up in the mountain peaks.

The Bill: The Cape Canopy Tour costs R595p/p, and this price includes snacks, lunch and a park conservation fee of R40. This fee is waivered for Wild Card holders, who then only have to pay R555.

Operating Hours: Monday – Sunday: 8am (first tour leaves) – 2pm (last tour leaves) (tours are roughly four hours in length, so those departing in the last group at 2pm can expect to return around 6pm)

Zipline Cape Town | Canopy Tours in and Around the Mother City

Canopy tours in Cape Town are one of the most popular adventure activities in and around the Mother City. Whizzing over forests and waterfalls is an experience you won’t soon forget! There are many places you can zipline in the Western Cape, so it all depends on how far you want to travel from your luxury Cape Town accommodation , and the types of scenery you want to experience.

You can create these experiences with Cape Canopy Tours which have a few ziplining tours throughout the Western Cape, or you can enjoy a tour by numerous other companies. Here’s what you can expect from a canopy tour in the Western Cape.

    What is Ziplining?

Ziplining often referred to as an aerial runway, is a pulley that slides along a thick cable. This cable is angled at a slope to give riders the momentum to gain incredible speeds. If you’re looking to enjoy incredible views, while travelling at speeds of up to 90 kilometres per hour, then ziplining might just be for you.

    Is Ziplining Safe?

Ziplining is incredibly safe. In fact, it’s one of the safest adventure activities around. At each and every one of the ziplining venues mentioned below, you’ll be fully kitted out with a safety harness as well as a helmet.

Ziplining tours always provide a guide to follow you along the route, to ensure everyone follows safety protocols and has a great time. Having a knowledgeable guide with you puts your mind at peace, and allows you to focus on the adventure at hand.

Where to Go Ziplining Near Cape Town

Here’s exactly where you should be going to experience ziplining in and around the Mother City.

    Ziplining Cape Town

Ziplining in SIlvermine Estate is perfect for first-timers. Why? Because the ziplines aren’t located too high up, eliminating the chance of experiencing vertigo. But you’ll still feel the rush of whizzing through the air at great speeds.

The tours are run by SA forest adventures , who also offer conference services, a restaurant, and other team-building activities on-site. This site is easily accessible to those within Cape Town, but for tourists, it may be easier to take the hop-on hop-off red bus to the location.

    Zipline Ceres

Ceres Zip Slide Adventures takes place in the Schurweberg Mountains just below the Koekedouw Dam. These eight slides stretch for 1.4 kilometres and range in length, between 100 and 290 kilometres long. Located just an hour and a half from Cape Town, this is a great ziplining option for those who don’t want to venture too far from the city.

    Elgin Zipline

Located a mere hour from the Mother City, Cape Canopy Tours provides a scenic zipline adventure through the Elgin Valley (near Grabouw). Expect stunning vistas and mountainscapes as you whizz over the natural fynbos.

During the adventure, you’ll scale the Hottentots Holland Mountains while taking in an exciting aerial perspective of the surrounding landscape. The area which you will be ziplining through was a previously inaccessible portion of the Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve – so there’s something a little more exclusive about this adventure.

    Zipline Mossel Bay

The Mossel Bay Zipline is the longest over-ocean zip line in the world. You’ll glide over the ocean for 1100 metres (that’s 1.1 kilometres just in case you missed it). While taking on this adrenaline-fueled adventure over the glistening waters of the bay, you’ll reach up to 90km/h.

Located four and a half hours from Cape Town, this zipline gives you a birds-eye view of caves, the ocean, and even the local wildlife; most commonly seagulls, seals, and sharks.

Something that only adds to the fun of this thrilling experience is the chance that you might get absolutely soaked along the way. During high tides and stormy weather, it’s not uncommon for zipliners to glide straight through a wave. So don’t forget to pack a spare set of clothes.

Final Thoughts on Ziplining in Cape Town

The Mother City has plenty of adventures to offer, ziplining is just yet another feather in the city’s cap. With Cape Town offering such beautiful views (in the city and in its surrounding areas), there’s truly no better way to enjoy them, for adrenaline junkies that is .

So if you’re up for the thrill, be sure to book a guided ziplining tour in or around Cape Town for a heart-pumping experience.

    • If you are coming from Cape Town, please factor in an extra 30-45min on the time indicated by google maps, as the power outages can create a traffic backlog which could impact your travel time. (we do not want you to miss your tour)

(Please also be aware that we are a cashless environment but we welcome all major debit and credit card payments)
    • FITNESS - This is an adventure activity, and we recommend a reasonable level of fitness: you will need to hike for 1km up and out of the mountain after the tour.   A moderate level of fitness, as well as upper body and core strength, is required to safely participate in this activity.
    • OPTIONAL VIDEO - If and when possible, we will do our best to take a video of you, but please don't rely on this as your only memory.  If all goes well, we will email you the video after the tour.  This is not included in the tour price
    • WEATHER - Our zipline tours are mildly weathered dependent, but we will operate in most weather conditions, so be ready to gear up and let's have some fun.  We keep a close eye on the forecasts and when necessary will make a decision to cancel/refund/reschedule your tour due to the weather.  We do our best to make these decisions as far in advance as possible, but sometimes this is not possible as our zipline slides are based high in the mountains and the weather up high is ever-changing.    Please be sure to keep an eye on the weather and advise our team at least 24hours prior to your tour time if you would prefer to cancel/refund or reschedule your tour due to potential weather.  (Any changes made with less than 24hours notice will be subject to our cancellation policy, UNLESS, we make a decision to cancel the tour)
    • TANDEMS -  We are able to offer 2 tandems per tour time, to ensure guide and client safety we can only offer tandems to guests who weigh less than 50kg.  Please be sure to advise us via email at [email protected], if there will be any children under the age of 9 years on your tour so that we are able to make arrangements.  (Note:  Our minimum age is 5 years old, and children aged 5-9years will most likely need to do the tour in tandem with the guide).
    • WEIGHT RESTRICTION - We suggest a weight restriction per person of approximately 100kg to 110kg – this restriction is not weight-related but rather imposed by the size of the harnesses we use and is based on the circumference of the straps around the body.    A reminder that this is an adventure activity so a moderate level of fitness, as well as upper body and core strength, is required to safely participate in this activity.
    • PREGNANT - unfortunately moms to be this tour is not for you
