Lao Tzu: 'The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.'

The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.

The quote by Lao Tzu, "The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step," encapsulates an essential and profound truth about life and achieving our goals. It emphasizes the significance of taking that initial step, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem, as it is the catalyst that sets us on our path toward progress and transformation. At first glance, the meaning of this quote is straightforward. It suggests that any monumental endeavor, no matter how intimidating or daunting it may seem, must start with a single action. It reminds us that great achievements are not made overnight but rather through a series of consistent and deliberate actions taken over time. This quote serves as a reminder that every long and arduous journey is comprised of numerous small steps, each contributing to our overall progress. However, to truly delve into the depth of this quote, we can introduce an unexpected philosophical concept: the idea of the interconnectedness of all things. Building upon Lao Tzu's wisdom, we can explore the notion that our initial step not only sets us on our individual journey but also initiates a ripple effect, influencing the world around us.Imagine for a moment, the act of taking the first step is like dropping a pebble into a still pond. As the pebble breaks the surface of the water, it creates ripples that extend outward in ever-widening circles. Similarly, when we take that first step towards achieving our dreams, we create a ripple effect that can reach far beyond our immediate sphere of influence. For instance, consider the story of a young artist who decides to take that initial step and display their work publicly for the first time. Though they may feel small and insignificant in the grand scheme of the art world, their act of courage and vulnerability inspires someone who views their work. That person, in turn, becomes motivated to pursue their own creative endeavors, sparking a chain reaction of inspiration and creative expression. Moreover, the idea of interconnectedness can also be applied to personal growth and our impact on others. Volunteering our time or lending a helping hand to someone in need may seem like a small gesture, but its effects can be profound. By taking that single step, we not only make a positive difference in the lives of others but also cultivate a greater sense of compassion and empathy within ourselves. In essence, Lao Tzu's quote reminds us that no action is inconsequential. Every step we take holds the potential to create a ripple effect, both within ourselves and the world around us. It encourages us to be mindful of the choices we make and to recognize the power and significance of even the smallest actions. The concept of interconnectedness challenges us to acknowledge the immense influence our actions can have on the trajectory of our lives and the lives of those around us. It invites us to consider the profound interconnectedness that exists between individuals, communities, and the world as a whole. In conclusion, Lao Tzu's quote, "The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step," serves as a timeless reminder of the importance of initiating action and the power of individual choices. It reminds us that even the smallest step can start a journey of transformation and have a profound impact on our lives and the lives of others.By introducing the concept of interconnectedness, we are reminded of the ripple effect our actions can create. This philosophical idea adds a layer of depth and complexity to the quote, stimulating contemplation about the interconnected nature of our world and encouraging us to recognize the far-reaching consequences of our actions. So, let us remember to be mindful of the steps we take and the effects they may have - for the journey of a thousand miles begins with one step, and that step can change the world.

Lao Tzu: 'Kindness in words creates confidence. Kindness in thinking creates profoundness. Kindness in giving creates love.'

Thomas jefferson: 'whenever you do a thing, act as if all the world were watching.'.

Lao Tzu – The Journey Of A Thousand Miles

1st step in journey

“The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” This famous quote, attributed to the ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu , has long been a source of motivation and inspiration for people embarking on new endeavors.

Lao Tzu - The Journey Of A Thousand Miles

Whether it’s starting a new job, launching a business, or pursuing a personal goal, the quote reminds us that no journey is too long or too difficult when we break it down into small, manageable steps. It’s a powerful reminder that even the most daunting of tasks can be accomplished when we take that first step and begin our journey.

We will take a closer look at the meaning and significance of this quote, and explore how it can be applied to our daily lives. We will analyze the quote in-depth and offer personal anecdotes and examples to illustrate its relevance in the real world.

The meaning of the quote “The Journey Of A Thousand Miles”

The quote “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step” is a simple yet powerful statement. It reminds us that even the longest and most challenging journeys start with a single step. It encourages us to take that first step, to start the journey, no matter how daunting the task may seem.

The quote is also a reminder that even small steps are progressing. Every step we take brings us closer to our destination and every step is a victory in itself. It’s easy to become overwhelmed by the enormity of a goal, but by focusing on taking one step at a time, we can break the task down into manageable chunks and make steady progress.

The quote implies that the journey is important, not the destination. The journey itself is a learning experience, a process of growth and development, and the destination is only the final outcome. By enjoying the journey and learning from it, we can achieve a deeper sense of satisfaction and fulfillment.

Additionally, the quote can be interpreted as an encouragement for self-reliance, as it implies that the individual has the power and capability to take the first step and start the journey by themselves.

The relevance of this quote in real-life

To illustrate the relevance of this quote in real-life, you can use personal anecdotes or examples. For instance, you could mention how you started a new business and how you took the first step and kept moving forward, one step at a time.

Or you could share the story of a friend who decided to run a marathon, and how he broke it down into small, manageable training sessions, to reach his goal .

“The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step” is a quote that reminds us of the importance of taking action, breaking down goals into manageable steps, and enjoying the journey. It’s a powerful reminder that we all have the capability to take that first step and that every step we take is progress.

We have explored the quote “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step,” attributed to Lao Tzu , and discussed its meaning and significance. We have analyzed the quote in-depth and provided personal anecdotes and examples to illustrate its relevance in the real world.

As we’ve seen, the quote serves as a powerful reminder that no journey is too long or too difficult when we break it down into small, manageable steps. It encourages us to take that first step, to start the journey, no matter how daunting the task may seem. It’s a reminder that even small steps progress, and that the journey is just as important as the destination.

We hope this post has been informative and inspiring, and that you will take the message of this quote to heart. A Journey of a Thousand Miles Begins with a Single Step

Meaning of “a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”.

This Chinese proverb means that a person must begin his or her journey to reach their goal or destination. It is a motivational proverb that expresses deep insight about determination and avoiding procrastination. It means a first step needs if we intend to finish a task or a thought on time . In other words, this expression tells that the great things commence with simple beginnings.

This proverb also stretches across two paradoxical phrases , ‘thousand miles’ and ‘single step’ while the emphasis is on a ‘single step.’ If an initiative is taken, the rest of the venture falls into place, and the mission starts. It also means that a voyage marked as a milestone starts with a single step. This proverb applies to a wide range of different circumstances where action needs to be taken for the completion of a task. Hence, in this saying ‘journey’ means a task/action and that it does not stay limited to traveling only. However, a step is an initiative or a starting point. A ‘thousand miles’ shows the longevity of a journey, while a ‘single step’ is an initial move. In other words, no matter how ambiguous the task is, how long the journey is or laborious the work is, a movement is always required to begin it.

Origin of “A Journey of a Thousand Miles Begins with a Single Step”

“A Journey of a Thousand Miles Begins with a Single Step” is a saying by an ancient Chinese philosopher. The original text is “A journey of a thousand li starts beneath one’s feet.”  Here li means distance. This quote was first used in Chinese classic text; Tao Te Ching attributed to Lao Tzu, a renowned Chinese philosopher. It was probably written between the 4 th or 6 th century.

Tzu’s powerful words have always been shadowed by renowned people. American President, John F Kennedy reintroduced this quote “A Journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” in 1963 about the first nuclear test ban agreement.

Examples in Literature

The journey of a thousand miles… by Ronnie James Corbin

“I’m pretty drunk right now , But my thoughts are clear enough to say, I believe in you. I believe in your dreams . I believe you can overcome your flaws. I believe you could write the masterpiece of our generation. You could cure cancer, bring world peace, and feed the hungry. You can show love. You can breathe your positive presence into the air. I want you to go forth and shine like the beautiful star that you are. Together we can demolish our egos. Start on the path to purity. They say the journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step, So hold my hand, and follow me, As I take mine.”

Ronnie James Corbin is an Ohio-based American poet wrote this poem for his sweetheart requesting her to join the poet to defeat every other thing, including cancer. The use of the first person and the second person to counter it balances the poem. The poem is a marriage proposal after the presentation of both figures. It gets clear in the third last line where the long journey is a long life, while the next line shows the invitation as “hold my hand”.

There Is No Easy Way (But There Is a Way) by Willie Nelson

Now that we’re back together the battle is half won We’ll try to save a part of yesterday I know it won’t be easy but at least we have begun There is no easy way but there is a way We both could use some understanding trust would help And the journey of a thousand miles begins with just one step And is love not worth the price we’ll have to pay There is no easy way but there is a way We both could use some understanding trust would help And the journey of a thousand miles begins with just one step And is love not worth the price we’ll have to pay There is no easy way but there is a way

Willie Nelson, a songwriter and poet, wrote this song to convey his colleague and beloved that they could start the relationship again as there is always a way even if nothing is easy. For this purpose, he has used this proverb as a repetition as well as a refrain in the last two lines of both stanzas .

Journey of a Thousand Miles My Story By Lang Lang and David Ritz

This is an autobiography of a Chinese pianist Lang Lang. He co-wrote the book with David Ritz to underline his hard struggle when moving from a western Chinese city to Beijing. It is not just the story of a pianist prodigy, but a family saga. The writer includes his whole family, who supported Lang Lang until his stardom. His father’s tireless struggle to make his song a star goes a long way. Therefore, the title of the biography shows the courage and sacrifice that a father has demonstrated to make his son a star.

Examples in Sentences as Literary Devices

Example #1: “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step and is finally covered after a time.” Here the proverb shows the journey that is covered only when a step is taken.

Example #2: “ He is an epitome of a journey of a thousand miles beings with a single step as he always takes a small step to do everything and completes it on time.” Here the proverb has been used as a metaphor as it shows the person as the model.

Example #3: “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step is like a task that has many parts, and if a small part is done, it means the big task will be done too.” The proverb has been used as a simile as the use of “like” shows.

Example #4: “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step forward or ends with a single step back.” This proverb also shows the use of a paradox a journey is of thousand miles, but it starts with a single step.

Example #5: “ A journey as long as a thousand mile begins with a single step” shows its use as a simile as it compares the longevity of a journey with a thousand miles. However, the proverb has been twisted a bit with the words “as long as”.

6 Ways to Take the First Step of Your Journey to Success Getting started is the hardest and most important part of getting from where you are to your loftiest goals.

By Sherrie Campbell • Jan 21, 2016

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

To become the type of success you are setting out to be you have to start at the beginning, just like in the alphabet you start with the letter "A." Success is not an event, it is a process. To finish any great endeavor you must first start. This may not be the start of a new business but could simply be the start of a new idea, a new path or a new way. To be a standout success is to take each new beginning and follow it through to the end.

The success journey is the process of working through each step to arrive at the next one, with each step motivating and inspiring you to press on without fail. "Z" may look far away from the vantage point of "A" but once you master "A" you will see "Z" gleaming out on the horizon. The beginning of any process is the most creative. Let's start with "A."

1. Awareness.

Always be striving for more, always be building and expanding your career and yourself as a person, not just as a success. The more you grow yourself, the more you grow the totality of your life. Hold an image of where you are in any given area of your life, right now. Now envision where you want to be: happier, richer, more successful, fit, healthier, in love.

To get from where you are to where you want to be, become acutely aware of the choices you make each day that lead you away from your desired goals. Become conscious of every single choice you make today, so you can begin to make choices that fall in line with the direction of your dreams for tomorrow.

To win you have to begin. Map out the circumstances you need to get ahead in your life m. If you cannot find them, make them. Take initiative. If you don't see the door to your success, build the door yourself by taking actions in the direct pursuit of your goals. When you are passionate about what you want nothing will stand in the way of you getting it.

List the action steps you need to take to get to where you want to go, to do what you want to do. Make these goals as tangible as possible. One successful goal achieved will build your motivation to achieve the next goal in front of you, and so on. Will these steps all be the right ones? Maybe and maybe not. But you won't know for sure until you start moving forward. Once you start putting yourself into motion all steps taken are a gift because each right or wrong step will provide you knowledge and direction.

3. Accountable.

Few things prompt a person to follow through like accountability. You have to create ways to make yourself accountable and to push through any habits of laziness or doubtful thinking. One of the ways you can do this is to share your goals with others who can help motivate you to stay on task. When you tell others about what you intend to do, it puts a more intense pressure on you to keep working at it. Another option is to get a business coach who can request evidence of your weekly progress. Pairing up with someone acts as a living deadline to keep you moving.

Track every action that pertains to an area where you want to see progress, whether it relates to finances, health, career, or relationships. Whether you are working with someone or going at it independently write everything down, every day without fail with no excuses or exceptions. Tracking your progress and missteps is the path to building success. The process forces you to be conscious of your decisions.

4. Attraction.

Once you have become aware of the steps you must take to do what you want to do, and are taking action, and are being accountable you will begin to produce the behavior you desire. You are moving towards realizing your desires and objectives. This type of movement results in producing a very powerful side effect. You start attracting like-minded people into your life and into business ventures and ideas. The Law of Magnetism says, "who you are is who you attract."

If you want to be around growing people become a growing person. If you're committed, you attract others who are committed. If you're growing, you attract others who are growing. This puts you in a position to begin building a network of like-minded people who help each other succeed. Your greatest growth will always come as a result of finding people ahead of you who can show you the way forward.

5. Accomplishment.

Get committed. Be willing to pay for your personal growth, financially and otherwise. Be consistent. Keep your every thought, word and deed focused on accomplishment. Be creative. Visualize your desired outcomes at all times. Involve yourself in multiple forms of personal development to feel a sense of accomplishment in every tangible area of your life. Study the people in business you admire. Read their books, attend seminars, hire a business coach, see a therapist and employ a personal trainer. Try and meet with those whom you admire in person, if possible. These people and the knowledge they have are gifts to your personal growth.

Spend time each day in preparation for these meetings and interactions. Reflect upon the interactions you have with all of these people you've sought to be a part of your personal development team and be thankful for every opportunity created for your learning. There is nothing more telling to the levels of success you can achieve then possessing a teachable spirit.

6. Authority.

When you do what you want to do it will be more difficult than you ever imagined. You have to be the authority over your own emotions to make success happen. You may have had no idea how much time it would take for you to be effective. You may not have expected to have as many demands placed upon you or your life as there have been, or you may not have realized how long you would have to keep paying the price for your success. You may not have fully comprehend how much your energy level would go down as a result of your commitment.

Great successes have the deep belief that the payoff of their success will make the times of great sacrifice well worth it. When you do what you want to do it will be better than you ever imagined. The compounding return of investing in your personal growth will be astronomical. You will be blown away by how much fun you have doing what you want to do and succeeding at it. Once you are in the fun place of experiencing your success, own it and revel in it. You deserve it... then start a new journey with a new beginning starting with the letter "A" that you can nurture all the way to "Z." You grow each time you go through this process. You grow in the ideas you hold of yourself, your life and your continued success. Success… doesn't really have an end.

The Importance of Combining the 12-Steps and Therapy

infographic on the 1st step of the 12 step program of recovery

Completing the 1st step often marks the beginning of the journey towards recovery as they engage with the 12 steps. This framework is instrumental in guiding people through the process of overcoming addiction, compulsion, or other behavioral challenges.

Initially developed by Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) for alcoholism, it’s now widely used for various kinds of addiction.

At its core, the program is a roadmap for recovery and ongoing personal development.

The First Step Explained

The first step is fundamental in the 12-step program, stating: ” We admitted we were powerless over our addiction – that our lives had become unmanageable. ” Let’s break it down:

  • Acknowledging Powerlessness: This is about realizing the significant impact of addiction and the failure of personal efforts to control it. It’s recognizing addiction as a substantial issue, not just poor decision-making or a moral failing.
  • Understanding Unmanageability: This means recognizing how addiction has disrupted different aspects of life, be it personal, work, or social.
  • The Role of Acceptance: Accepting these realities is essential. It’s about understanding and acknowledging the true nature of the addiction, which is the first step towards meaningful change.

The first step is admitting powerlessness over addiction and recognizing that life has become unmanageable. It's about acknowledging the need for change and help.

The 1st step requires a great deal of honesty and humility. Admitting powerlessness goes against human nature, which often values control and self-reliance.

Importance of the First Step

The first step is vital for starting the recovery journey. They underline the importance of abstinence in addiction recovery and the effectiveness of the 12-step program in ensuring this.

Embracing the first step is more than just an admission; it’s a paradigm shift. It marks the start of a recovery journey, seeing things realistically and paving the way for further steps towards a successful recovery.

How do personal beliefs influence the interpretation of the first step?

Personal beliefs, including cultural and spiritual values, shape how individuals understand and approach the concept of powerlessness and unmanageability in their lives.

Varied Interpretations and Personal Meanings

How different individuals interpret the first step.

The first step in the 12-step program, while clear in its wording, opens up a spectrum of interpretations reflecting the diverse experiences of individuals. These interpretations are not just about the addiction itself but also how it intertwines with personal values, beliefs, and life experiences.

For many, this step marks the beginning of an insightful journey into the depth and complexity of their addiction. It often leads to profound self-reflection about personal responsibility and the nature of addictive behaviors.

Understanding that addiction extends beyond physical dependence to include emotional and psychological dimensions can be an enlightening realization. This range of understanding makes the first step a deeply personal and significant part of the recovery process.

Diverse Perspectives on Admitting Powerlessness

Admitting powerlessness, as outlined in the first step, is interpreted in various ways. Some individuals see this as an acknowledgment of how addiction has reduced their capacity for sound decision-making and effective life management.

Others view it as a moment of clarity, recognizing that addiction is not merely a series of poor choices but a complex condition that requires a comprehensive approach to treatment and support.

This step also leads to the realization that addiction can be a symptom of deeper underlying issues, such as trauma or mental health disorders. This insight is vital as it influences the course of recovery, encouraging the pursuit of abstinence and holistic healing.

The diversity in these interpretations highlights the adaptability and relevance of the 12-step program across various life situations and personal histories.

Exploring the Concept of Powerlessness in Addiction

Get help at cornerstone healing centers, realizing the need for the first step, journey to recognizing one's powerlessness and unmanageability.

Embracing the first step of the 12-step program is a journey that often requires deep personal introspection. It involves coming to terms with the profound impact of addiction on one’s life.

This process is not immediate; it unfolds over time through experiences and realizations about the depth and severity of the addiction.

Individuals often face internal struggles, doubts, and denials as they begin to acknowledge the extent of their powerlessness and the unmanageability of their lives due to addiction.

This realization is a pivotal moment, marking the beginning of a transformative journey toward recovery.

It requires an honest assessment of how addiction has affected various facets of life, including relationships, work, and personal well-being.

The Role of Self-Awareness and Honesty in Recovery

Self-awareness and honesty are fundamental in acknowledging the need for the first step. These attributes allow an individual to confront the reality of their addiction, moving beyond mere acknowledgment to a deeper understanding of its causes and effects.

Being honest with oneself helps to dismantle the walls of denial that often surround addictive behaviors. This level of self-awareness fosters a genuine desire for change and is the bedrock upon which recovery is built.

It also encourages individuals to explore and address underlying issues that may contribute to addictive behaviors, such as past traumas or mental health challenges.

The journey towards recovery starts with this critical self-awareness, leading to more effective and sustainable healing practices.

Active Engagement in the Recovery Process

A key aspect of recovery is active engagement in the process, beginning with the acceptance of one’s powerlessness over addiction. This active involvement means regularly attending meetings, participating in discussions, and working through the steps of the program.

It involves a commitment to personal growth and the willingness to explore and change long-standing behavior patterns. Engaging actively in the recovery process also means seeking and offering support within the recovery community, building networks of mutual aid and understanding.

This collective journey fosters a sense of belonging and shared purpose, which is essential for sustaining long-term sobriety and wellness.

The First Step in the Recovery Process

Foundation for subsequent steps.

The first step in the 12-step program is more than an initial gesture; it is the cornerstone upon which the entire recovery process is built.

This step, acknowledging powerlessness over addiction and recognizing unmanageability in life, sets the stage for profound personal change. It establishes a mindset of openness and readiness for the transformative journey ahead.

By admitting the need for help, individuals pave the way for exploring deeper aspects of their addiction and begin to understand the importance of external support and community in their recovery journey.

This foundational step is essential for effectively navigating subsequent steps, each building on the awareness and insights gained from the previous one.

Progression from Admission to Active Recovery

The progression from admitting powerlessness to actively engaging in recovery is a critical transition in the 12-step program.

This journey starts with the internal realization of the need for change and gradually moves towards external actions that embody this change. It involves not just an acceptance of the current state but also a commitment to personal growth and improvement.

A series of actions mark the progression: seeking support, engaging in honest self-reflection, and gradually adopting new coping mechanisms and behaviors that support sobriety.

This transition is often challenging but is pivotal in moving from a state of acknowledgment to active recovery and healing.

The Spiritual Aspect of the 12-Step Program

Tips on getting through the 1st step of aa or na.

Embarking on the first step of your recovery can feel overwhelming, but remember, you’re not alone in this.

Let’s break it down into manageable pieces:

It’s time to look in the mirror and say, “Yes, I’m facing a challenge that I can’t overcome on my own.” Acknowledging this is a huge step forward.

This isn’t about admitting defeat; it’s about being real with yourself. Consider writing down what your addiction or compulsion has cost you – relationships, opportunities, health, and happiness.

You don’t have to do this alone. Find someone to talk to, whether it’s friends, family, or a support group. Sharing your struggles can make them feel lighter.

Learn about the nature of addiction and recovery. Understanding what you’re dealing with demystifies the process and helps you feel more in control.

Be kind to yourself. This journey is tough, and it’s okay to acknowledge your struggle. Treat yourself as you would a good friend in the same situation.

Instead of overwhelming yourself with the entirety of recovery, focus on small, daily goals. This could be as simple as attending a meeting or calling a supportive friend.

Take time to acknowledge your efforts and progress, no matter how small. Every step forward is a victory worth celebrating.

Remember, this first step is starting your journey towards a healthier, happier you. It’s about choosing to take back control. You’ve got this!

The Importance of the First Step

Essential for successful recovery.

The first step in the 12-step program is pivotal for a successful recovery journey.

This step, which involves acknowledging powerlessness over addiction and the unmanageability of life due to this addiction, is foundational.

It represents a critical shift in mindset, from denial to acceptance, and sets the tone for recovery. This acceptance is the starting point for all further growth and healing.

Without this fundamental acknowledgment, the journey toward recovery can lack direction and sincerity, making the other steps less effective.

The first step is, therefore, not just an initial phase but a vital part of the transformative process of recovery.

Long-Term Implications of Embracing the First Step

Embracing the first step has significant long-term implications for individuals on their path to recovery. This step goes beyond mere admission; it involves a deep, ongoing process of self-awareness and acceptance.

It lays the groundwork for developing healthier coping mechanisms, rebuilding relationships, and fostering a more stable and fulfilling life.

The long-term benefits of embracing the first step include increased resilience to future challenges and a sustained commitment to sobriety and personal growth.

This initial step, therefore, has a ripple effect, influencing not just immediate recovery but also shaping a sustainable path for the future.

12-Step Treatment Programs and Their Outcomes

Challenges and support, common challenges in accepting the first step.

Accepting the first step of the 12-step program comes with its set of challenges. Many individuals struggle with admitting powerlessness over their addiction, as it can feel like conceding defeat.

There’s often a natural resistance to acknowledging that one’s life has become unmanageable due to addiction. This resistance can stem from a fear of stigma, a sense of personal failure, or simply the difficulty of facing the reality of addiction.

Denial is a common barrier, as it serves as a protective mechanism against the pain and shame associated with addiction. These challenges make the first step one of the most difficult but essential parts of the recovery journey.

Strategies for Overcoming These Challenges

Overcoming the challenges of accepting the first step requires a combination of self-reflection, support, and perseverance. Seeking support from peers who have gone through similar experiences can be incredibly beneficial.

Sharing experiences in a safe and supportive environment, such as 12-step meetings, can help break down the barriers of denial and fear. Practicing self-compassion and understanding that addiction is a disease, not a moral failing, can also ease the process of acceptance.

It’s important to focus on the journey rather than the destination and to recognize that setbacks are a normal part of the process. With support and commitment, individuals can gradually navigate these challenges and fully embrace the first step.

My fellow Americans, let us take that first step. Let us ... step back from the shadow of war and seek out the way of peace. And if that journey is a thousand miles, or even more, let history record that we, in this land, at this time, took the first step. — John F. Kennedy

First Step In A Journey Quotes By Sharon Salzberg

The first step on the journey of faith is to recognize that everything is moving onward to something else, inside us and outside ... We see that a self-image we've been holding doesn't need to define us forever, the next step is not the last step, what life was is not what it is now, and certainly not what it might yet be. — Sharon Salzberg

First Step In A Journey Quotes By Kimberly Giles

The first step on the path to fearlessness is to embrace two critical principles of truth that are the opposites of the two core fears (the fear of failure and the fear of loss). If you practice trusting these two truths you can eliminate fear in any situation. The first is to trust that your value isn't on the line because life is a classroom, not a test. The second is to trust that your journey is the perfect classroom journey for you; that anything you lose, you are meant to lose; and that each experience serves you no matter what happens. — Kimberly Giles

First Step In A Journey Quotes By Rajneesh

Surrender is just like love. That's why I say only lovers can become sannyasins - because they know a little of how to surrender. Love is the first step towards the divine, surrender is the last. And two steps is the whole journey. — Rajneesh

First Step In A Journey Quotes By A.W. Tozer

Bring us back again into right and eternal relationship with Himself. This required that our sins be disposed of satisfactorily, that a full reconciliation be effected and the way opened for us to return again into conscious communion with God and to live again in the Presence as before. Then by His prevenient working within us He moves us to return. This first comes to our notice when our restless hearts feel a yearning for the Presence of God and we say within ourselves, "I will arise and go to my Father." That is the first step, and as the Chinese sage Lao-tze has said, "The journey of a thousand miles begins with a first step. — A.W. Tozer

First Step In A Journey Quotes By Debasish Mridha

The first step is the best step in a journey towards a destination. — Debasish Mridha

First Step In A Journey Quotes By John Ashbery

The first step of the terrible journey toward feeling somebody should act, that ends in utter confusion and hopelessness, east of the sun and west of the moon. — John Ashbery

First Step In A Journey Quotes By Claude Hickman

I think the hardest step in any journey is not the first one -- it's the next one. We are on a journey where each step that God directs us toward is going to seem to require greater faith and sacrifice than the last one. Once we've begun, we look back at the first step and laugh. It was hard then, but it is never as difficult as the next step. We are going to see that the people God involves in His journey are not people who have incredible, unwavering faith; so much as they are normal people who are willing to take the next step down the path. — Claude Hickman

First Step In A Journey Quotes By Augustus Napier

We are intensely loyal to our parents. In spite of the pain we experienced at our parent's hands, we cling tenaciously to their views of life; and their examples of what it is to be a man or a woman follow us throughout life. Acknowledging the power of our loyalty to them, and especially our loyalty to our same-sex parent, is only the beginning of our journey to improve upon their model; but it is at least a first step. — Augustus Napier

First Step In A Journey Quotes By Gerald G. May

If we are honest, I think we have to admit that we will likely try to sabotage any movement toward true freedom. If we really knew what we were called to relinquish on this journey, our defenses would never allow us to take the first step. Sometimes the only way we can enter the deeper dimensions of the journey is by being unable to see where we're going. — Gerald G. May

First Step In A Journey Quotes By Lao-Tzu

The giant tree starts out as the tiniest shoot, the tallest tower starts out as a single brick, the longest journey starts with the first step. — Lao-Tzu

First Step In A Journey Quotes By Ernest Agyemang Yeboah

Everybody is a champion! Everybody has conquered something in life before! You have achieved something great before: your first time of walking. Remember how life would have been should you have failed to challenge and overcome that challenge, even as an infant! If you could do that as an infant, you can conquer great challenges now to leave great and indelible mark before you go! He who thinks failure has a super power over him should remember the first day he took the first step to walk! He who wants to end it all because of failure must think of why he never ended the journey of life just because he tried walking the first time ever and fell, but stood up and tried over and over until he could walk without a fall! Take your courage and be a champion! Dare to conquer life! — Ernest Agyemang Yeboah

First Step In A Journey Quotes By Osho

Zen is a single step - the journey of one single step. You can call it the last step or the first step, it doesn't matter. It is the first and it is the last, the alpha and the omega. The whole teaching of Zen consists of only one thing: how to take a jump into nothingness, how to come to the very end of your mind, which is the end of the world. — Osho

First Step In A Journey Quotes By Israelmore Ayivor

Money is not the priority. A step to dream big and planning of your dreams is a premier action that will see you through a start of your journey to success. — Israelmore Ayivor

First Step In A Journey Quotes By Orson Scott Card

A library is the first step of a thousand journeys, portal to a thousand worlds. — Orson Scott Card

First Step In A Journey Quotes By K. Bromberg

We've been to hell and back, and I love you more for every single step of that journey. I only hope you feel half of what I feel when you look at me, when you love me, or when you laugh with me. The world stops for me - time stands still - when I put my arms around you. I love that feeling, and I love that I've only ever felt that way with you. I want to be the first thing you touch in the morning and the last thing you taste at night before you dream. I want to spend the rest of my life with you, Had. . . . I want to stop wasting that precious time. Will you marry me? — K. Bromberg

First Step In A Journey Quotes By Ram Dass

After one arrives at the summit, after going through the total transformation of being ... there is yet one more step to the completion of that journey: the return to the valley below, to the everyday world. Who it is that returns is not who began the climb in the first place. The being that comes back is quietness itself, is compassion and wisdom, is the truth of the ages. Whatever humble or elevated position that being holds within the community, he or she becomes a light for others on the way a statement of the freedom that comes from having touched the top of the mountain. — Ram Dass

First Step In A Journey Quotes By Amy Purdy

But the truth is that I don't want to simply offer others a fleeting moment of "inspiration." I want my story to spark real change. An aha moment becomes most meaningful when it leads us to do more. Dream bigger. Move past our so-called limitations. Defy expectations. Bounce back with the resilience that every single one of us was born with. I didn't write this book because I want you to say, "Wow, look at what that girl overcame - good for her." I'm sharing my story because I want you to see what's possible in your own life. Right here. Right now. Starting the second you pick up your pen and create your own amazing narrative. The words of the Chinese philosopher Lao-tzu have always resonated with me: "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." What follows is my first step. My first stumble. My first dance. My first dream. — Amy Purdy

First Step In A Journey Quotes By Rick Riordan

There is always a way out for those cleaver enough to find it-Athena When you wake up, you have two choices, to go on dreaming your dreams or get up and chase them. It's not about the destination, it's about the journey. a journey begins with a single step. — Rick Riordan

First Step In A Journey Quotes By Nelson Mandela

The truth is that we are not yet free; we have merely achieved the freedom to be free, the right not to be oppressed. We have not taken the final step of our journey, but the first step on a longer and even more difficult road. For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others. The true test of our devotion to freedom is just beginning. — Nelson Mandela

First Step In A Journey Quotes By Neil Cole

The journey to significance starts with the mere willingness to surrender the status quo and take the first step of faith into the adventure. — Neil Cole

First Step In A Journey Quotes By Gretchen Rubin

The most important step is the first step. All those old sayings are really true. Well begun is half done. Don't get it perfect, get it going. A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Nothing is more exhausting than the task that's never started, and strangely, starting is often far harder than continuing. — Gretchen Rubin

First Step In A Journey Quotes By Shellie Palmer

Forgiving yourself is the first step, forgetting, well it never goes away. Moving forward and walking with one foot in front of the other does get you somewhere. Just keep walking. — Shellie Palmer

First Step In A Journey Quotes By Syd Field

The Chinese say that "the longest journey begins with the first step", and in many philosophical systems "endings and beginnings" are connected; as in the concept of yin and yang, two concentric circles joined together, forever united, forever opposed. If you can find a way to illustrate this in your screenplay, it is to your advantage. — Syd Field

First Step In A Journey Quotes By Lionel Shriver

...like that legendary journey that begins with a single step, I had already embarked upon my first resentment. A petty one, but most resentments are. And one that for its smallness I felt obliged to repress. — Lionel Shriver

First Step In A Journey Quotes By Colin Thubron

Sometimes journeys begin long before their first step is taken — Colin Thubron

First Step In A Journey Quotes By George Leonard

First Step In A Journey Quotes By Hannah Harding

You'll never know the kind of person you could be until you take that first step, all alone, into the great unknown. Very few take the step. — Hannah Harding

First Step In A Journey Quotes By Ann Voskamp

Sometimes you don't know when you're taking the first step through a door until you're already inside. — Ann Voskamp

First Step In A Journey Quotes By Josie Spinardi

But can you imagine if the very first time that you fell after pulling yourself up on that coffee table, a voice came thundering down at you, berating you for falling? "I knew you couldn't do it! You fell, you idiot! I can't believe you fell. Everyone else is walking, but not you. You are a pathetic little crawler and you always will be!" No, quite the opposite! Toddlers are met with lavish praise at each minor progression, even steps in the general direction of progress. When the little one pulls herself up, she gets applause. Mom grabs the video camera and calls the grandparents. Can you imagine how different - and by different, I mean better - this journey would be if with every advancement you made, every small, wobbly step you took in the direction toward Hunger Directed Eating (however imperfect it was), you lavished praise, delighted wonderment, and encouragement upon yourself? — Josie Spinardi

First Step In A Journey Quotes By Vimala Thakar

To take a journey of a thousand miles, you have to begin with the first step from the place where you stand; the romantic description of the journey and the things the body sees on the way and the description of the scenery are of no use unless you lift your foot and take the first step. — Vimala Thakar

First Step In A Journey Quotes By Debra Erfert

A lengthy journey begins with a solitary first step, and ends with the last breath taken. --Debra Erfert — Debra Erfert

First Step In A Journey Quotes By Rosaria Champagne Butterfield

The journey out of lesbianism had many dimensions, and the Lord was gracious in leading me a small step, and then burning the bridge I crossed to keep me safely closer to him. From the first night, there was no going back. Slowly — Rosaria Champagne Butterfield

First Step In A Journey Quotes By Moffat Machingura

The first step is the hardest in every journey of dreams. There is nothing else to fear unto whosoever has shown the tenacity to begin; because, once having started, the hardest part of the mission is the one lying behind. — Moffat Machingura

First Step In A Journey Quotes By Orhan Pamuk

If a person can live in the same house for seventy years and still be confused, then this thing that we call life, and imagine we have used up, must be such a strange and incomprehensible thing that no one can even know what their own life is. You stand there waiting and on it goes from place to place, no one knows why, and as it goes, you have many thoughts about where it's been and where it's headed; then just as you speak these strange thoughts, which aren't right or wrong, and lead to no conclusion, you look, and the journey ends here, Fatma, okay, this is where you get off! First one foot, then the other, I get out of the carriage. I take two steps, then step back and look at the carriage. — Orhan Pamuk

First Step In A Journey Quotes By Frank M. Wanderer

Closing the last chapter of our personal history and taking the first step on the Journey will come with the recognition of the futility of spiritual seeking. — Frank M. Wanderer

First Step In A Journey Quotes By Joseph Campbell

I have found that you have only to take that one step toward the gods, and they will then take ten steps toward you. That step, the heroic first step of the journey, is out of, or over the edge of, your boundaries, and it often must be taken before you know that you will. — Joseph Campbell

First Step In A Journey Quotes By Steve Maraboli

Nobody ever talks about the pyramids that weren't built, the books that weren't written, the songs that weren't sung. Stop letting your fear condemn you to mediocrity. Get out of your own way. Your dreams are a poetic reflection of your soul's wishes. Be courageous enough to follow them. There is no greater time than now to experience the full power of your potential. Make this the day you take the first step in the beautiful journey of bringing your dreams to life. — Steve Maraboli

First Step In A Journey Quotes By Swami Dhyan Giten

Sex is the alpha and enlightenment is the omega. Sex is the first step of the spiritual journey, and enlightenment is the last step of the spiritual journey. — Swami Dhyan Giten

First Step In A Journey Quotes By Frank M. Wanderer

The Wanderer then leaves behind the spiritual seeker, with all the accumulated knowledge and lofty spiritual experience, and takes the first step on the Journey. — Frank M. Wanderer

First Step In A Journey Quotes By Brene Brown

What we all share in common - what I've spent the past several years talking to leaders, parents, and educators about - is the truth that forms the very core of this book: What we know matters, but who we are matters more. Being rather than knowing requires showing up and letting ourselves be seen. It requires us to dare greatly, to be vulnerable. The first step of that journey is understanding where we are, — Brene Brown

Journey Christian Church

Inviting and leading people into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ

1st step in journey

CONGRATULATIONS on your interest to explore what First Step is all about at Journey Christian Church. We believe First Step is more than a one-time event. It is an opportunity as a parent to take some time early on to focus on what really matters most in the life of your child. No one will have more influence on your child than YOU! As a church we believe what happens at home is more important than what happens at church. We want to partner with you from the very beginning as you learn to disciple your family.

This event is not infant baptism. We believe that when people are old enough to understand what it means to put their faith and trust in Jesus Christ as their personal Savior, they should have the opportunity to make that choice for themselves. This event is a celebration of your commitment as a parent to disciple your child to know, love, and follow Jesus.

1. INVITE : Intentionally choose guests that you would like to speak directly into the lives of your family. Whose voice do I need to hear? Whose voice does your child need to hear? Invite those who can give you advice on parenting, hold you accountable, and help you disciple your children. Let them know why you invited them! There will be a total of 10 seats available to include your family and guests.

2. PHOTOS : After you register, you will receive a link to upload 3 photos of your child(ren).

3. HOMEWORK : We will encourage you to write a letter or prayer to your child. You will be asked to share this letter at your table during the celebration event. More information will be sent in an email after you register.

College Applications: How to Begin

Find the right college for you..

Applying to college is a big job. It can feel overwhelming. However, you can make the process much easier by breaking it down into small steps. Here's how.

How to Start Applying for Colleges

The good news is that most U.S. universities follow the same standard application process. If possible, begin the following four-step approach several months before the submission deadline.

  • Understand the common terminology you'll see during the application process. Learning how to apply to college involves having a good grasp of such things as frequently used acronyms, supporting documents, and government departments.
  • Review the appropriate application timeline you should follow when signing up for college. Every school has its own deadlines, but you may have certain milestones to hit during your senior or even junior year.
  • Discover the individual components of a complete application . For example, schools usually ask for supplemental application materials like letters of recommendation, transcripts, and written essays.

1st step in journey

  • Create a real and a virtual folder for storing documents.
  • Print a checklist to track your progress on each part of the application.
  • Build a spreadsheet to stay on top of submission deadlines.
  • Your Social Security number.
  • Your high school code.
  • A copy of your high school transcript.
  • Your score report from a college admission test.
  • Make sure you’ve included all required information and that the information filled out on the forms is accurate and spelled correctly.
  • Confirm that any required attachments are the correct files and have been properly uploaded.
  • Double-check that you filled out all fields and followed all instructions.
  • Take a deep breath. Click submit !

Where do I start with college applications?

The first step is to do your research. Knowledge is power. Knowing what to expect from the application process makes a difference. Research the schools you're interested in applying to. Learn as much as you can about their admissions process.

What are the steps in the college application process?

Keep in mind that signing up for college is a multistep process. Among other key steps, you must fill out a standard application, acquire crucial support documents, and write personal essays. Although schools have different requirements, here are the main steps of the college application process:

  • Create a list of colleges you're interested in.
  • Research and visit schools to narrow down the list.
  • Fill out the FAFSA®, and consider finances and scholarship opportunities.
  • Get letters of recommendations, if required.
  • Take college admission tests.
  • Write your college application essay, if required.
  • Complete your online application(s).
  • If any of your target schools have their own institutional applications, complete those.
  • Check and recheck your application documents before submitting them.

What should I do before I fill out my college application?

How do you apply for college without wasting time? Advisers often recommend gathering relevant documents before you begin. You can knock out the informative sections in one go, reducing your chances of making an error. Some of the basics you need include:

  • Identity cards and Social Security number.
  • School transcripts.
  • Test scores.
  • List of extracurriculars.
  • List of awards and achievements.
  • Recommendation letters, if required by the college.
  • Application and school portal login credentials.

What are the most important parts of a college application?

College admissions officers consider many factors when reviewing applications. Among the most important factors are your grades and the courses you took.

The best approach to have when completing applications is to treat every part as important. Put your best foot forward in all areas. Make every part shine.

Now you're informed, inspired, organized, and ready to begin. For more on the college admissions process, visit Applying to College: FAQs .

A screenshot from the game Journey, where the player controls a robed figure through a vast desert.

Celebrated indie studio thatgamecompany’s most recent title, Sky: Children of the Light , has debuted in early access on Steam. To mark the occasion of its chill, free-to-play MMO coming to PC, it’s knocking 85% off the cost of its masterpiece, Journey . It’s normally $14.99, but this Steam Deck verified game costs just $2.24 through April 17.

  • $2 at Steam

Despite launching first on the PS3 back in 2012, Journey is absolutely worth playing if you haven’t tried it out, or just want to experience it again. Like all of the games that have come out of thatgamecompany, it’s absolutely stunning to look at, and its story and music pack an emotional punch.

Its multiplayer component is understated, yet surprisingly impactful, allowing players to support each other without voice chat (much like in its successor Sky: Children of the Light ) as they attempt to overcome environmental obstacles and scale a mountain. Words simply don’t do the experience justice, and at $2.25, I highly recommend trying it out. If you like the vibes, then check out Sky: Children of the Light .

Dodgers’ Brusdar Graterol Takes First Step in Injury Recovery

The Los Angeles Dodgers’ bullpen is depleted. Multiple of their better relief pitchers have missed the start of the season, including their right-handed flame thrower, Brusdar Graterol .

Graterol has missed the first 16 games of the season and will miss more as he was placed in the 60-day IL. While it will be some time until the Boys in Blue get him back, he’s progressing well from his injury.

Los Angeles Times staff writer Mike DiGiovanna states that Graterol is ramping up in his recovery process.

Reliever Brusdar Graterol threw off a bullpen mound Friday for the first time since the right-hander was put on the 60-day injured list because of shoulder inflammation on April 2. — Mike DiGiovanna, via Los Angeles Times

The 25-year-old was placed in the IL due to shoulder inflammation. He was expected to miss the start of the season, but the Dodgers expect him back about a month from now.

His time with the Boys in Blue has been as good as it can be. Graterol holds a 2.69 ERA, 131 strikeouts, 159 ERA+, 3.24 FIP, and a 1.04 WHIP in 173.2 innings and 171 games.

Although it will be some time before he returns, it’s great to see Graterol is ramping up his recovery. The Dodgers bullpen is atrocious at the moment, ranking 21st in the league with a 4.73 ERA. Graterol cannot come soon enough.

'First step': civil society welcomes Polish votes

The Center for Reproductive Rights in Europe said that “today lawmakers in Poland voted in favour of continuing the legislative process for all 4 draft bills to reforming the abortion law. This is an important first step towards aligning the law with the majority of European countries where abortion is legal on request.”

Summary of the day

The Polish parliament considered proposals on loosening the country’s near total ban on abortion.

The MPs looked at four bills: Two are aimed at legalising abortion up to the 12th week of pregnancy and another is focused on decriminalisation. The fourth seeks a return to strict 1993 laws.

The parliament voted on Friday afternoon to send all four bills to a special committee for consideration, despite differences of opinion within the ruling coalition.

The speaker of the Polish parliament, Szymon Hołownia , said his party backed the bills “out of respect for democracy and concern for the durability of the coalition.”

Civil society groups and some MPs celebrated the move.

Miko Czerwiński , head of campaigns at Amnesty International Poland , said that “Poland’s parliament has taken a significant step towards ending Poland’s cruel and draconian restrictions on access to abortion.”

The Center for Reproductive Rights in Europe said that “this is an important first step towards aligning the law with the majority of European countries where abortion is legal on request.”

The president of the Polish Bishops’ Conference, the archbishop Tadeusz Wojda , urged Poles “to make this Sunday a day of special prayer in defence of the unborn.”

Politicians in Poland have voted to move forward with draft legislation aimed at lifting the country’s near-total ban on abortion, in what campaigners described as a crucial first step towards loosening some of Europe’s most restrictive abortion laws.

On Friday MPs in Poland’s lower house of parliament voted to send four bills on abortion for further study by a parliamentary committee, including two that propose legalising abortion until the 12th week of pregnancy.

The long-awaited vote followed a six-hour debate on Thursday , during which the deep divisions over abortion access in Donald Tusk’s ruling coalition were laid bare.

On Friday, reaction to the vote was swift. “This is a historic moment,” said Kamila Ferenc of the Federation for Women and Family Planning. “For the first time since 1996, projects liberalising and decriminalising abortion have been sent to a second reading in parliamentary committee.”

Her organisation had long worked towards this outcome, meeting MPs, educating them and speaking out about the need to change the law, she said. But Friday’s vote was just the beginning of what was likely to be a long legislative journey, she added. “We have a lot of work to do in the future.”

'Significant step': Amnesty International welcomes Polish move, calls for 'urgent' action

Miko Czerwiński , head of Campaigns at Amnesty International Poland, said after the votes that “by approving these four amendments, Poland’s parliament has taken a significant step towards ending Poland’s cruel and draconian restrictions on access to abortion, which have had a devastating impact on the lives and health of so many people.”

Poland needs to urgently amend their abortion law which endangers lives, jeopardises health and contravenes the country’s international and European human rights obligations as well as flies in the face of in the face of the World Health Organization’s abortion care guideline. As these amendments go through to the next voting stage, it is crucial that politicians listen to the voices of civil society and those people directly affected by the near total ban on abortion and bring the law into compliance with international human rights standards.

Archbishop calls for day of prayer 'in defence of the unborn'

The president of the Polish Bishops’ Conference, the archbishop Tadeusz Wojda , has called for a special day of prayer on Sunday.

Wojda urged Poles “to make this Sunday a day of special prayer in defence of the unborn.”

“I ask that in all churches in Poland, at every Holy Mass, we pray for this intention,” he said .

A national march for life is also planned for this Sunday.

Katarzyna Lubnauer , a member of the Sejm from the Nowoczesna (Modern) party, said today’s votes are “just the first step.”

“The last one will be the entry into force of the right to abortion up to 12 weeks. As soon as possible,” she said.

“We got it!!” wrote the New Left’s Robert Biedroń .

“The Sejm voted on the abortion projects prepared by the Left and referred them to a special committee in the Sejm. This is good news, especially for Polish women who have been fighting for their rights for 30 years. We keep working!” he said.

“We promised to stop arguing and we kept our word,” wrote the speaker of the Polish parliament, Szymon Hołownia .

“In Poland 2050 we believe that the greatest chance for change is provided by a referendum, but we voted for all the projects,” he said, adding: “We did it out of respect for democracy and concern for the durability of the coalition. Now we leave the fate of these bills in the hands of the committee members.”

“Today is a very happy day for Polish women!” wrote Małgorzata Tracz , a member of the Sejm for the Greens.
