Dear Maranatha Tours, Your company has put together one the best things I have ever experienced. I am very thankful for the trip of a life you made possible for me to enjoy and to be educated at the same time. I always dreamed about going to Israel and confirming my dreams, was more than I expected.

It was well organized and every day activity was outlined in the booklet or by the tour guide personnel. Malcolm and his staff were awesome. Malcolm is well educated about the place and most of all he was informative and patient. Thank God for people like him. His bus driver was humble and friendly. The hotel personnel was helpful in every way possible in the dining room and made sure I was please and comfortable.

I appreciated all that they and I want to thank each and every one in your staff for they all came together to make this possible for me. Thank you again and again.

I am yours truly,

Norma Summer

I just watched the Gethsemane video clip and relived my March 2013 experience.  I remember the old gnarled olive trees.  If they could only speak!  My trip to Israel was a life-changing experience.  I thoroughly enjoyed it and I learned so much.  I’d do it again as soon as it becomes possible.  As I continue to read my Bible I feel the need to revisit and heighten my appreciation for the land where my Lord lived while on earth.  The Bible really comes alive after visiting Israel.  Just one simple way is to recollect the large shrub covered with yellow flowers produced from the tiny mustard seed.  When we crossed the Adam bridge, our host mentioned the Jericho crossing.  I had never before noticed the name Adam in the book of Joshua!  Now I never miss it!  Sailing on the Sea of Galilee was unforgettable.  Walking on the Via Dolorosa was a pensive journey and the Empty Tomb brought a feeling of exhilaration.  There were so many places that brought my Bible alive – too many to mention. Even as I write memories are flooding my mind.  As I said, I would go again.

This was a trip of a lifetime. More than I even had hoped. Our guide Malcolm was terrific and one of the most educated and informational people I have ever run across. The food was spectacular. The accommodations were great. Each day was filled with wonderful sites and a look back in history. Some of my favorite moments were the times we were singing in churches or the Shepherd's cave, the Sea of Galilee boat ride, communion at the garden tomb and the Holocaust museum. Having a rededication of my baptism in the Jordan River was a memorable experience. If I would have changed anything it would have been had to have more time at the museum as there was so much to see there. I also loved going to the marketplace and experiencing what life is like for people who live there. Thank you for the wonderful experience and I have been sharing it with all I am coming in contact with. Everything was well planned and I would highly recommend it to anyone.

Christian Fellowship Alaska Cruise: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best month for a Christian Alaska Cruise?

If you’re planning a Christian cruise to Alaska in 2024 or 2025, the summer months are the best time to visit. Alaska gets cold during the winter, and the days are longer during the summer. Summer is the ideal season to relax on our Christian Alaska Cruise. Booking Christian tours at the right time is essential if you want the best weather, but some areas may be busier during certain parts of the year. Pilgrim Tours can help you choose the best Alaskan Christian Cruise for your schedule.

How many days do you need for a Christian Alaska Cruise?

Our Christian Alaska Cruises range from 7-11 days in length and take you to various landmarks and historical locations throughout Alaska. When you book our Christian cruises to Alaska in 2024 or 2025, you’ll have plenty of time to relax and enjoy some of the beautiful nature the state has to offer. This cruise also includes stops in Alaskan towns like Juneau and Skagway, so you’ll get the chance to spend an afternoon in several unique areas.

What is the dress code on a Christian Alaska Cruise?

Like most of our U.S. tours , the dress code for our Christian Alaskan Cruise aboard the Celebrity Millennium, Quantum of the Seas or Radiance of the Seas is relaxed for the most part. You can wear casual resort wear onboard the ship and bring some swimming gear for the time you spend shoreside. At night, you’ll need to wear smart casual attire if you want to attend the dining areas and theater. You can contact us if you have questions about what to pack.

Is there a lot of walking involved on a Christian Alaska Cruise?

While our Ireland tours and other tours of Europe often involve walking, you can kick back and relax when you book a Christian Alaska Cruise in 2024 or 2025. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to lounge around aboard the ship, but there are a few land stops that require some walking. Bring a comfortable pair of shoes that you don’t mind walking in. The cruise ships also have a gym, so you can bring athletic shoes and gym clothes if you want to work out.

What passport & visa information do I need for your Christian Alaska Cruise?

Before you book one of our Christian Alaska Cruises, make sure you have a valid passport. You may also be required to have a multiple reentry visa if you’re a foreign passenger traveling from the United States. If you have any questions about passport and visa requirements for our Alaska cruises, feel free to call or email us.

What common languages will be spoken during the Christian Alaska Cruise?

For most of your Christian Alaska Cruise, you’ll be talking with people who speak English. Other passengers may speak another language, and there are also stops where you may encounter people who speak other languages. Our cruise includes a stop in Ketchikan, where some people still speak the native Tlingit language. However, there won’t be any major language barriers like you may encounter with our Germany tours .

What currency can I use on a Christian Alaska Cruise?

While you need to exchange US dollars for euros before booking one of our Greece tours , you can spend US dollars during your Alaskan cruise. As a US state, Alaska uses the US dollar as its primary currency. While you’re on the cruise ship, you can charge any purchases you want to make to your cruise issued ID card. You can view the current balance of your cruise ID card in the your Cruise App at any time.

Do I need to bring a converter for the Christian Alaska Cruise?

Most cruise ships have the standard 120V type B outlets that Americans are accustomed to, so you don’t need to worry about bringing a converter if you’re from the United States. Some cruise ships also have 220V outlets for European passengers. If you’re not from the United States, you should bring an adapter that works with 120V type B outlets just to be safe. You can also use a universal adapter.

What is the time zone for your Christian Alaska Cruise?

Alaska uses the Alaska Time Zone (AKST), which means you’ll be in a different time zone than the contiguous United States. The Alaska Time Zone is an hour behind Pacific time, two hours behind Mountain time, three hours behind Central time, and four hours behind Eastern time. Fortunately, this slight change in time zones isn’t enough to cause jet lag.

What climate should I expect during my Christian Alaska Cruise?

When you book an Alaskan cruise with other Christian passengers, you can expect warm but somewhat mild weather during the summer. While Alaska can reach temperatures above 90 F, that’s a rare occurrence. Temperatures in the 70s are more common during the summer. You should bring casual resort wear like sandals and shorts, but cruises in Alaska aren’t quite as warm as our Costa Rica tours.

Enjoy great fellowship & daily devotional times.

The landscape varies from the muddy waters of Turnagain Arm to the icy blue glaciers that hang almost to the sea. Wildflowers and waterfalls brighten every corner of the road as it glides below rough mountains that pierce thick, heavy clouds. Only Alaska's Seward Highway can offer this particular mix created by climate, geography, and geology. We take ample time to stop and see the incredible sights and any wildlife as well a couple recommended stops. Seward is not only one of Alaska's oldest communities, it's also one of its most scenic. Visit and discover this picturesque town known as the gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park. You'll find a historic downtown district filled with quaint shops and art galleries, and some of the most exciting outdoor adventures imaginable. Upon our arrival, transfer to our cruise ship, the five star "Celebrity Millennium". After boarding we will have time to familiarize ourselves with the ships amenities before embarkation this evening.

Day 7: Hubbard Glacier

The longest river of ice in North America, the Hubbard Glacier is also one of the most active glaciers of its kind in Alaska. And since our ships are designed to provide our guests with the best viewing possible, you'll be able to see this massive natural wonder, with its 1,350 square miles of blue ice, from just about anywhere on the ship.

Day 8: Juneau

christian fellowship tours 2024

Early morning worship time will begin our dayWe arrive in Juneau, the capital of Alaska. Juneau was founded during a gold rush in 1880. Today, the former gold-mining town counts among its riches some of Alaska's most spectacular scenery. Nestled at the foot of Mt. Juneau in the Alaska Panhandle, it faces the water from the mainland side of Gastineau Channel. Several magnificent fjords are located along the channel coast, and the majestic Mendenhall Glacier, a favorite of visitors, is nearby.

Day 9: Skagway

We arrive in Skagway early this morning for a full day of Alaskan experiences. This "Gateway to the Klondike" watched as countless fortune-seekers passed on its streets as they headed to the Chilkoot and White Pass Trails during the heyday of Alaska's Gold Rush. Today, you can still feel like a prospector in Skagway, as you walk along its rustic boardwalks and frontier-style storefronts. With only 750 residents, this cozy town lies at the head of the Lynn Canal and offers a pleasant respite from the hustle and bustle of most cities. We will return to the ship in early evening to continue our cruise, voyaging on the Lynn Canal, which affords breathtaking views of the mountainous landscape.

Day 10: Icy Strait Point

Icy Strait Point is located near the city of Hoonah, the largest native Tlingit Indian settlement in Alaska, and very near Glacier Bay National Park. Home to a historic cannery, the port's connection to the sea is strong. Locals share the sea with humpback whales, orcas, Dall porpoises, seals, sea otters, halibut and all five species of Pacific salmon. It is not uncommon to spot a humpback or an orca while walking along the shore.

Day 11: Ketchikan

We arrive in Ketchikan this morning, located in the Tongass National Forest, the largest in the US at over 17 million acres. Ketchikan is Alaska's first port of call for northbound ships. Originally visited by Tlingit natives, the heart of Ketchikan is downtown Ketchikan Creek, which includes the wooden boardwalks of Creek Street. Take the tram for a bird's eye view of downtown, or browse the many shops and Native cultural displays throughout the town.

Day 12: Inside Passage (At Sea)

We wake up this morning with a full day at sea cruising. Experience the beauty of Alaska as we travel through the Inside Passage. Apart from the Alaska sites we will have the entire day to enjoy what our ship has to offer.

Day 13: Vancouver

We arrive early this morning, disembark and transfer to the airport for our flight home.

After purpose-driven renovations, Bridgewater church given new life

The gathering will perform live music at the open house.

christian fellowship tours 2024

BRIDGEWATER ― People have noticed the stunning transformation outside the former Bridgewater United Methodist Church.

Time-faded yellow bricks are now painted an attractive and soothing blue-gray "morning fog" color, as black window trim provides a sharp, aesthetically pleasing contrast.

Passersby have wondered aloud, what's going on inside.

Is a new church arising? Is someone building more condos in Bridgewater? Or a brewery?

Far from it.

After 16 months of painstaking, purpose-driven work, owner Anthony Ellis is ready to invite the public inside to see what he's planning.

On May 4, Ellis hosts an open house at His Place, a Christian fellowship hall that's slowly, steadily taking shape.

"We invite you to stand with us as we strive to create a brighter future for those in our community," Ellis wrote on the flier for the 4 p.m. His Place event that will include food, fellowship and a live performance by local Christian band The Gathering.

Ellis will offer tours of the 117-year-old structure he and his helpers extensively renovated.

His Place/His calling

Ellis makes it clear; he felt a God-given calling to transform the idle church building that went up for sale in 2021, at one point purchased and owned temporarily by a developer who had planned to tear it down to put up more river-view condos.

"And then it went back on the market," said Ellis, who envisioned a different purpose, one he acknowledges he hasn't fleshed out fully yet, except he believes the structure needs to be some sort of Christian-minded fellowship hall.

The symbolically chosen name: His Place.

"It's going to be a learning process," Ellis, an Army veteran stationed in the Iraq War in 2004-05, said. "I've been a contractor going on 16 years and this is a step for me, and faith."

He bought the brick structure in December 2022, and within a few days began tackling the first major challenge, repairing a leaky roof. Replastering the walls and exposing stately beams followed.

"This place was torn up. Railings were missing, doors were missing. It had been ready for demo," he said.

For the next year, the 40-year-old New Brighton native set aside his contracting business and focused on restoring the church structure to its past glory.

Ellis removed two drop ceilings to give a grander view of the still-functioning bell tower. A dozen stained-glass windows carefully were re-shined, and the former pulpit area was recast as a stage where Christian music bands could perform.

Ellis took century-old wood he'd been saving for just the right occasion, using his cutting and lacquering skills to create tables and shelves. He repurposed old doors as restroom stalls in lavatories that are an eye-pleasing mix of modern and vintage.

He set up tables and chairs offering ample seating for group meetings. There's equally sizable space for food prep.

To imbibe the mission behind it all, a local artist has painted several of the interior walls to show both Bridgewater scenes, including a depiction of the church's original look, and Biblical scenes, such as the Sermon on The Mount, Jesus Calming the Storm, and the Calvary.

On the upstairs floor, Ellis crafted a primary bedroom, bedrooms for his daughters, a parental suite and a guest room.

Daughters Lucia and Mia enjoy riding bikes in Bridgewater, playing in the neighborhood park and visiting Bruster's Real Ice Cream.

"It's been quite a personal journey; a family journey," Ellis, who is divorced, said.

His vision and purpose propel him.

"It's important to be able to share the Gospel in a different way and just bring people together. We are so divided," he said. "So divided. Everybody over everything. You name it. Race, religion, creed, politics, vaccine or not. And it's getting crazier by the day."

In the building's cavernous basement lie more restroom facilities, vast storage space and an area with tables, chairs and a kitchen area for which he has a longer-term vision. It just needs some Biblical scenes or Scripture painted on the walls, and some kitchen equipment, Ellis said.

"I could see this as like a Christian bar or coffee shop. Alcohol-free. I want the whole place to be that," Ellis said. "I've been sober for quite some time. I know a lot of people who need a place like that. I'm not taking business from any of these (Bridgewater taverns), I want a different crowd."

Again, that's part of the vision that still would need to come more fully in focus.

For now, starting with the open house − not a grand opening − for people to see his progress and the building's potential, while welcoming any donations or tangible support.

"Why I wanted to have this in May was to get rid of all the rumors," Ellis said. "(People have asked) 'What's it going to be? What are you doing? Who's going to be the pastor? Is it going to be a brewery? Is it going to be this or that?'

"It's my house right now," he said. "God blessed me with a beautiful home down by the river. And I want to be able to share it."

He's sensed divine intervention amid his renovation journey.

"God's direction is guiding me," Ellis said.

For months, he kept looking at a section of interior wall trim where a big chunk was missing, pondering how to fix it. Then someone donated an old historical photo of Bridgewater that filled in that missing chunk perfectly.

"I didn't even have to cut it," he said. "Just the people, the timing, the materials have been right there when I need them."

Beaver County's best-known commercial painter, rocker Rick Granati, volunteered to help paint some of the exterior using his bucket truck to reach some high spots.

"And we had help and volunteers throughout," Ellis said.

Bridgewater resident Roger Morrow kept noticing the painting and renovation work, and with curiosity rising popped by and introduced himself to Ellis, who laid out his vision for a Christian fellowship gathering place. Now Morrow is among those volunteers helping there with administrative work.

"It's just like a giant canvas. And everyone who comes in here says, 'Hey, can my group do this? And 'can we help with that?'" Morrow said. "This is literally going to be a community center created by the community under the umbrella of Anthony's vision."

Eastern Orthodoxy: An Evangelical Perspective

The Eastern Orthodox Church is one of two branches of the ancient Catholic Church. Prior to 1054 AD, the Catholic Church was formally united, while serious differences simmered beneath the surface. In 1054, the churches in Eastern Europe, Western Asia and Northern Africa finally broke fellowship with Rome, not wanting to cede ecclesiastical supremacy to the Roman bishop or to accept various dogmas popular in the West. Henceforth, the main centers of Orthodoxy would be Alexandria, Jerusalem, Antioch and Constantinople, with Constantinople serving as “first among equals.” Later, a fifth patriarchate arose in Moscow. Despite notable differences among themselves, the autonomous Orthodox churches have ever since remained loosely bound together by a common faith, liturgy, and system of government. Like Roman Catholics, Orthodox Christians believe that theirs is the one true apostolic Church of the Lord Jesus Christ.

An interesting historical episode illuminates the sharp differences between Orthodox and Protestant interpretations of the Christian faith. In the late 1500’s, Philip Melanchthon, a disciple of Martin Luther, sent a copy of the newly formulated Augsburg Confession to Patriarch Joasaph of Constantinople, requesting that he might ” . . . find herein a faithful rendition of Christian truth.” Twenty years later, Joasaph’s successor, Jeremiah, finally responded, condemning as erroneous the Reformation teaching about spiritual authority, the divine nature, predestination, justification by faith alone, and the impropriety of icons and the veneration of the saints in divine worship. Further critiques would follow, effectively placing the Orthodox churches squarely and permanently in the Catholic tradition. It should be remembered, however, that Orthodoxy still remains at odds with Rome on such fundamental questions as the locus of doctrinal authority for the Church, the procession the Holy Spirit, and the nature of sin and salvation.

In this article, I will offer a brief evangelical perspective on Orthodox teaching about spiritual authority, salvation, and the Church. The reader is encouraged to study the Scriptures for himself in order to determine the truth about these fundamental themes.

Orthodox Christians teach that Christ has vested supreme authority in matters of faith and practice in the Church. Practically speaking, this means that authority is vested in the successors of the apostles—the bishops—and in various councils where the bishops infallibly worked out the true and binding meaning of the apostolic writings. Especially important are the seven Ecumenical Councils, held during the fourth through eighth centuries. These, along with the decrees of subsequent local councils, have determined the centuries-old shape of Orthodox tradition.

Following the lead of the sixteenth century Reformers, evangelical Christians argue that final authority in spiritual matters is vested solely in Christ and the Scriptures, especially the New Testament. This means that every believer has both a right and an obligation to seek from the Spirit of Christ the true meaning of the Bible for himself. Since Christ gives teachers to his Church, it is wise to listen carefully to their views. Nevertheless, no teacher, pastor, bishop, pope, council or tradition (other than the biblical tradition) has final authority over the conscience of the individual Christian man or woman. Martin Luther well expressed evangelical conviction on this matter when he said, “My conscience is captive to the Word of God.” Evangelicals find many passages in the New Testament to support Luther’s view (Matthew 23:8-10; Mark 7:1f; Luke 24:44f; John 16:13; 1 John. 2:27; Acts 17:11, 20:32).

For the Orthodox, salvation is theosis—the divinization of man. This startling concept seems to have originated with bishop Athanasius, who wrote, “God became man so that man might become god.” Orthodox theologians use ideas from Neo-Platonic philosophy to explain theosis. Theosis does not mean spiritual union with God’s essence which, after all, is humanly unknowable. Nor does it mean union with the hypostases, or Persons, of the Holy Trinity. Rather, it means union with the energies of God that, like the rays of the sun, emanate from His essence towards His creatures. This view of salvation supports one of the fundamental tenets of orthodoxy: God is so transcendent and so mysterious as to be essentially unknowable by man.

And yet, despite the vast chasm separating God and man, Orthodoxy affirms that Adam was created with in innate desire for fuller union with God—for a mystical participation in the divine nature (2 Peter 1:4). In the path of virtue, he would have attained it. But Adam’s transgression subjected him and his posterity to mortality, which now pressures all men to sin by choosing the things of this life rather than the things of God. Thus, Adam’s children do not inherit his guilt or a sin nature, only the spiritually weakening effect of mortality.

Christ offers salvation from this downward spiral by means of His incarnation, death and resurrection—all of which somehow lift believers out of their sin and mortality to God. Practically, salvation is accomplished through the cooperation of God and man. God reaches out to man in the Church, and especially in its sacraments. Man, however, must respond, freely partaking of the sacraments so as to receive the divine energies that produce theosis. This means that outside the (Orthodox) Church and its sacraments, there is no salvation.

The path to divinization includes other works as well: asceticism, prayer, contemplation, and good deeds. While water baptism and faithful Church membership apparently assure final salvation, Orthodoxy teaches that temporary punishments after death may also be necessary to make salvation complete.

Evangelical Christians find this soteriology truncated and unbiblical at many points. On the manward side, it denies that Adam’s sin is imputed to his offspring (Romans 5); that man inherits a sin nature as well as physical mortality (Mark 7; Romans 7, 8:1-8); that far from being free to respond to the Gospel, he is actually dead in trespasses and sins and therefore in desperate need of the grace of God to regenerate him and draw him to Christ (John 6; Ephesians 2); that salvation has primarily to do with pardon and deliverance from the wrath to come (Romans 1-3); that this pardon is received as a free gift, once for all, by faith at the moment of conversion (John 3, 6; Romans 3; Ephesians 2); and that the justified soul immediately enters Heaven at the moment of death (John 17; Philippians 1).

Similarly, on the Godward side Orthodoxy denies that God sovereignly elected a particular people to salvation before the creation of the world (John 17; Romans 8; Ephesians 1); that salvation is conferred solely only the basis of Christ’s righteous life and atoning death on the cross (Romans 3; 1 Corinthians 1; 2 Corinthians 5); that Christ’s death was substitutionary and therefore designed especially for God’s elect (John 10, 17; Romans 5; Ephesians 1); and that the Holy Spirit gives to the elect full assurance of their salvation, along with perseverance in the faith to the very end of their lives (John 14:16; Romans 8; Ephesians 1:13-14).

In sum, Orthodoxy rightly emphasizes that God created man for fellowship with Him, and that redemption has this great good in view. But by obscuring the biblical testimony concerning God’s actual plan of salvation, Orthodoxy makes the experience and enjoyment of this fellowship difficult at best.

Like Roman Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy offers a sacerdotal interpretation of the Christian faith. That is, it emphasizes the Church, and especially the hierarchy of priests who allegedly mediate Christ and His salvation to His people. As we have seen, sacerdotalism entails that priests and bishops alone have the right to determine the true meaning of the New Testament for the faithful. Similarly, it entails that the priests alone hold the keys of the kingdom of God—the sacraments—in their hands.

Here, in a nutshell, was the bone of contention that gave rise to the Reformation. After centuries of toil under this kind of authoritarian system, the Reformers finally repudiated the sacerdotal interpretation of the Christian faith. Returning to the New Testament itself, they found to their amazement that Christ alone is the one Mediator between God and man, and that all true Christians are part of His eternal priesthood (1 Timothy 2; 1 Peter 2). This radically biblical view once again placed all believers under the direct authority of Christ and the apostolic writings. And this, in turn, made it possible for them to reexamine centuries of Christian tradition, much of which they found, to their amazement, was completely unbiblical. Thus, the Reformers not only challenged Catholic views on authority and salvation, but also on the mass, the number and nature of the sacraments, the veneration of Mary, prayers to the saints, the use of icons and relics in divine worship, and more. Succeeding generations of biblical Christians would question infant baptism, traditional ideas about Church-State relations, the gifts of the Spirit, and the true nature of Church government.

Orthodox and Roman Catholic theologians lament these challenges, finding in them a tragic departure from the one true apostolic faith. Evangelicals, on the other hand, welcome them, finding instead a departure from defective human traditions and a return to the pure apostolic faith. For evangelicals, this historical struggle for the biblical gospel is understood to be an ongoing work of the Spirit of Christ. While believers are semper reformans (ever reforming), their Lord is ever bringing His Church closer to ” . . . the unity of the faith and the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness Christ” (Ephesians 4).

Earlier I mentioned that upon reading a copy of the Augsburg Confession, Patriarch Jeremiah wrote back to Melanchton, repudiating it at nearly every point. I did not mention, however, another telling episode in the history of Protestant-Orthodox relations that occurred around the same time.

In 1620, Patriarch Cyril of Lucaris also investigated the new Protestant teachings. But unlike Jeremiah, Cyril was so taken with them that he immediately proposed a new Orthodox confession constructed along essentially Calvinistic lines. Sadly, history shows that his labors met with widespread rejection from Orthodox leaders. That rejection became official and has continued right up to our own day.

Evangelical Christians, glorying in the simplicity and newfound freedom of the biblical gospel, are disappointed that Cyril’s views did not prevail. We pray that they yet might, even as we remain confident that Christ will indeed bring His people to the unity of the one true faith. Until that day, however, it falls to every believer to decide for himself which interpretation of the Christian religion accords best with the teaching of Christ and His apostles. Like the Bereans of old, we must search the Scriptures daily to see which of all these things are so (Acts 17:11).

Accepted Student Days: Reflections from Current Students

Three current STM students share how their experiences at Accepted Student days informed their discernment to join the STM community.

Calista Robledo, MDiv, '26

In my graduate studies discernment, Accepted Students Days at Boston College School of Theology and Ministry served as a catalyst for my decision to attend. Without it, the decision would not have been as earnest as it was. At the advice of my undergraduate mentors, I visited STM hoping to take note of any “green flags,” or “red flags,” that would aid my discernment once I returned home. When the plane from McAllen TX. took off to Boston MA I was 40% sure I’d attend STM. The plane landed, and I was nervous and excited. I approached Symboli Hall alone, far from home, and so unsure of where my life was taking me. But the moment I entered, I caught a glimpse of Our Lady of Guadalupe near the door. And I felt peace. I felt at home. That was green flag #1. The following two days were a joyous blur of insight and clarity. While I learned about the school from a variety of sessions and panels, I learned the most in conversations with current students and faculty. Accepted Students Days intentionally ensured we  felt not only welcomed but embraced by the current community. In this embrace I remember feeling spiritually, intellectually, and interpersonally stimulated by everyone I met. Green flag #2. Moments of clarity were sprinkled throughout the two days thanks to prayer opportunities and fellowship. Participating in the STM’s Thursday liturgy allowed me to clearly picture myself as a student doing this every week. I was enthused just imagining it. Green flag #3. Additionally, there were instances where we were encouraged to pause, pray, mediate, or reflect on our graduate studies discernment thus far. Through these moments, I was able to connect with God and assess where we thought I should be. By the middle of the second day, I was 80% sure I would attend STM. I let the thought of being there linger the rest of the day. While on a group trolley tour of Boston, I saw myself in the stands at Fenway or strolling the Boston Commons. Green flag #4. I told a new friend I made, another accepted student, that I was sold, and she said she was too. When the festivities ended we didn’t say goodbye, rather we joyously exclaimed “See you in the fall!” And I knew I made the right choice. I called my family before going to sleep and told them I’d be attending STM. Somehow they knew this was the place for me before I did, but I would not have known the beautiful possibilities ahead if I did not attend Accepted Students Days.

Olivia Britt, Hybrid MATM, '26

Though each part of the application process had its own role in my decision to attend the STM, Accepted Student Days was truly the final key piece of the puzzle. The STM's online presence and communication is top-tier, but nothing helps you picture something becoming a reality in your life quite like physically being there. Even as a hybrid student, it was important for me to be able to picture myself at the STM since I would be there for three summers, so ASD was a critical step in my decision-making process. From the moment I set foot on campus, I felt welcomed and embraced as part of the community. The Admissions team (and really everyone at the STM) devoted so much energy and enthusiasm to the activities and events of those two days and used our time so well. When we weren't in a panel of professors, we were sitting down enjoying a meal with them. When we weren't shadowing a current student in class, we were chatting with them at a happy hour. And when we weren't on a tour of BC's campus and library, we were on a trolley through the city of Boston and enjoying time with the community at a historic tavern downtown. Each element of the programming was intentional, and I couldn't have asked for a fuller experience of the STM (and BC as a whole) before making my final decision. The community of faculty and students, opportunities for research and formation, and the memories made in just two days were all aspects that led me to decide that the STM was the right next step for me, and I couldn't have done that without ASD!

Christian Stanzione, MTS, '24

Accepted Students Day proved crucial because it provided me with a space to discern in community with my peers. Thursday Mass was especially key; seeing the professors and students of the STM gather to worship and celebrate the life of Christ, both with the Mass and at lunch. To see the STM alive with fellowship showed me that it was a place where the risks we take in our Christian lives will be met with honesty, care, and love.

Twenty Liberty University students were honored during Convocation on Friday as recipients of the 2024 LU Serve Green Cord Service Scholarships, given to students who exemplify the school’s mission of service to others.

The scholarships are awarded annually. This year’s students each received $2,000. The scholarships are funded through the LU Serve Green Cord Campaign , in which Liberty graduates can purchase a green cord to complement their Commencement regalia.

To qualify for the scholarship, students were asked to fill out an application earlier this semester in which they outlined their current service activities, including their Christian/Community Service ( CSER) hours, for either the current or immediately prior semester. They also submitted a letter of recommendation from their CSER supervisor. All Liberty students are required to complete CSER hours for graduation. The CSER program pairs students with approved organizations and service projects, sending students out into the community to love their neighbors. CSER sites include churches, schools, food banks, libraries, pregnancy centers, and more. The program trains students to apply a biblical worldview as servant leaders, transform their communities for the glory of Christ, and use their academics and passions to win at work.

LU Serve Director Chad Nelson said the four main tenets required of scholarship recipients are outstanding character, work ethic, leadership, and selfless service.

“Our heartbeat and our passion are that students would really use their own passions and academic training to go out and be a light unto the world through the CSER program,” he said. “Our student body overall does a tremendous job within the CSER program, representing themselves, Liberty, and Christ well. Getting to recognize a few of these students who are shining forth in this area, really going above and beyond, is an honor.”

The scholarship winners are chosen by a selection committee from the Office of Spiritual Development .
