A “Night In White Satin” may be coming to you.

This summer, Justin Hayward of The Moody Blues is taking his ‘Blue World Tour’ to performing arts centers, music halls, ranches, pavilions, and theaters all over North America with Christopher Cross on select dates.

That includes quite a few stops in New York and New Jersey for the 2018 Rock Hall of Fame inductee.

First, the “Tuesday Afternoon” singer is slated to drop into Red Bank, NJ’s Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre on Wednesday, July 3.

After that, he hits Tarrytown, NY’s Tarrytown Music Hall on Friday, July 5, Morristown, NJ’s Mayo Performing Arts Center on Tuesday, July 16 and finally, he’ll deliver the hits at Bethel, NY’s Bethel Woods Center For The Arts on Wednesday, July 17.

“I’m rediscovering songs I have written and sung over the years – some that I only lived with for a few days while they were being recorded,” Hayward said in a press release regarding his last tour, according to All About The Rock .

“Now, I have a chance to experience the feelings that they gave me then, every night on stage, as well as including in our set the favourites that have been milestones on my musical journey. I’m joined by the ‘guitar genius’ that is Mike Dawes, along with Julie Ragins and Karmen Gould, two of the brightest talents in music.”

If you can’t wait to sing along to “Question,” “Your Wildest Dreams,” “The Story In Your Eyes” and so many more Moody Blues classics as well as a few choice cuts from Hayward’s solo catalog, tickets can be yours for all 14 U.S. ‘Blue World’ concerts as soon as today.

Justin Hayward and Christopher Cross Come to Indian Ranch This Summer

The voice of The Moody Blues  Justin Hayward  and five time Grammy Award Winner  Christopher Cross  will perform at Indian Ranch on Sunday, July 7, 2024. Tickets go on-sale this Saturday, March 2nd at 10:00 AM at  www.indianranch.com . A limited number of Low Dough Early Bird General Admission tickets will be available for just $32.50 through March 8th, while supplies last.

Having chalked up over fifty years at the peak of the music and entertainment industry,  Justin Hayward ’svoice has been heard the world over.  Known principally as the vocalist, lead guitarist and composer for the Moody Blues, he is an enduring talent that has helped to define the times in which he worked. Over the years the band has sold more than fifty-five million albums and received numerous awards. In 2018, along with the other members of The Moody Blues, Justin was inducted into the legendary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Born and brought up in Swindon in the UK, Justin’s interest in music started early when he was five years old and his grandfather bequeathed him his large collection of 78 rpm recordings. “It opened a world of imagination to me,” says Justin.  Having taught himself to play the ukulele, he soon progressed to guitar and by his early teens he was playing in local groups.  Upon leaving school at 17 he answered an advertisement in Melody Maker newspaper and successfully auditioned for UK Rock and Roll hero Marty Wilde . “I got the job playing guitar for Marty – it was a dream come true for me”. Justin credits Marty with encouraging him to become a songwriter; he made several recordings with Marty’s ‘Wilde Three’ and also appeared with them at the London Palladium.  They remain close friends to this day: “Marty is still my hero”.

Having started the ball rolling as a songwriter in his own right with a couple of solo singles, he joined the Moody Blues in the summer of 1966. Hitting his stride immediately with the single “Fly Me High,” he followed it up with the classic hit songs “Nights in White Satin” and “Tuesday Afternoon” from the seminal albumDays of Future Passed. This album went on to become a favorite of the NASA astronauts and was taken aboard the Atlantis shuttle spacecraft by Chief astronaut “Hoot” Gibson on many missions.

This purple patch showed no sign of abating as Justin created other classic, era and genre-defining hits “Question,” “The Voice,” “The Story In Your Eyes,” “I Know You’re Out There Somewhere” and “Your Wildest Dreams.” These laid the foundation for the incredible success story of the Moody Blues – as well as his solo work – which continues to this day.

Christopher Cross  burst onto the music scene with his 1980 self-titled debut album, winning five Grammy Awards, including—for the first time in Grammy history—the “Big Four” most prestigious awards: Record of the Year (for the single “Sailing”), Album of the Year, Song of the Year (also “Sailing”), and Best New Artist.

In a career spanning more than four decades, Cross has sold over 10 million albums. His music has garnered five Grammys, an Oscar, a Golden Globe, an Emmy nomination and five Top 10 singles.  

Within a year of the first album’s release, Cross joined music royalty Burt Bacharach to write “Arthur’s Theme,” for the movie Arthur, which won an Academy Award for Best Song. With his 1983 release, Another Page, Cross was again in the Top 10 with the singles “All Right” and “Think of Laura.” His song, “Swept Away,” composed for the hit television series, Growing Pains, was nominated for an Emmy.

Cross started his own label and, since 2007, has released 8 albums of new material, including A Christopher Cross Christmas and The Café Carlyle Sessions, jazz treatments of hits and favorites born out of a residency at the famous Hotel Carlyle in New York City. Take Me as I Am, released in 2018, features richly-crafted melodies and elegant guitar work.  The latest project for Christopher Cross Records is aptly titled The Complete Works. Released in 2020, it celebrates his 40th anniversary as a recording artist and is a collection of all 12 previously-released CDs, one CD of singles and bonus tracks, and a pink vinyl containing one track from each album chosen by Christopher.   

All in all, it’s been quite a ride, one that has taken Cross from his early days in Texas where he once served as a drum tech for Ginger Baker, bought gear from Jimmy Page , and played lead guitar for Deep Purple on a night when Ritchie Blackmore fell ill, to this place as a respected singer-songwriter-guitar player who continues to share his original music with the world.

The right to disconnect

Up to half a million workers in federally regulated sectors like banking, telecommunications and the transportation industry may soon have a right to disconnect from work after hours.

The latest budget commits to invest $700,000 per year for five years to amend the federal Labour Code that would require federally regulated employers to implement a right to disconnect policy that limits all work-related communication outside of an employee’s regular working hours.

“As the nature of work in many industries has become increasingly digital, workers are finding it increasingly difficult to disconnect from their devices and inboxes after hours and on weekends,” the budget reads.

A budget geared towards Gen Z and Millennials wouldn’t be complete without a reference to Taylor Swift. So, when thousands, if not millions, of Canadians failed to secure tickets to the pop megastar’s Eras Tour stops in Toronto and Vancouver, the Liberals decided they had to act.

In the budget, the government promises to work with provinces to crack down on “fraudulent resellers” who “maliciously” snatch up desirable tickets and boost prices using bots and other unfair techniques.

It will also work towards unspecified “stronger protections” against excess ticketing fees and ensuring people get timely refunds for cancelled events.

But the credibility of these government commitments is cast into doubt when the budget cited the hypothetical example of Toronto Maple Leafs fan “Nick” struggling to get a refund for unnecessary playoff game tickets because the Leafs swept through the first round of the playoffs in four matches.

One government source told National Post that the original example had the Leafs losing in four, but the blurb was edited in the days before the budget. Presumably to avoid any further municipal-federal confrontation.

Capitalizing on capital gains

If you’re anything like the author of these lines, capital gains are just an abstract notion that has little to no bearing on your annual income.

But for 40,000 wealthy Canadians (0.13 per cent of the population), they represent over $250,000 of income yearly and the government says they are undertaxed.

As of now, half of all capital gains (which come from the sale of assets like stocks or a second home) are exempt from taxes. The Liberals say that’s not fair because the wealthier you are, the more your income is made up of capital gains. So, they’re proposing to reduce the tax-exempt amount to one-third for capital gains that exceed $250,000 in a year.

The lower exemption would also apply to businesses but for all capital gains, not just those over $250,000 in a year.

The additional capital gains taxes are expected to rake $19.4 billion into the government’s coffers over the next five years.

Halal mortgages

The number of Muslims in Canada is rising yearly, meaning so is interest for “halal mortgages” which trade interest payments (which are not allowed under Islamic law) for “profit rate.”

In March, the government launched consultations with financial institutions and ethnic communities on how federal policies could be better adapted to their needs. One key finding was expanding access to “alternative financing products” like halal mortgages.

“This could include changes in the tax treatment of these products or a new regulatory sandbox for financial service providers, while ensuring adequate consumer protections are in place,” reads the budget, which promises more details in the 2024 Fall Economic Statement.

CRA fighting the people who don’t want to give up documents

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is tired of fighting for suspected tax dodgers’ documents.

“Limits to existing information gathering powers provided to the CRA under the Income Tax Act impede the effectiveness of the CRA’s compliance and enforcement actions,” the government admits in the budget.

A key solution highlighted in the budget is a new tool called a “Notice of Non-Compliance” that the CRA could issue if a taxpayer being audited or verified has not provided information required by the agency.

The notice recipient would then be fined $50 each day they do not provide the required information to a maximum of $25,000. The notice would be reviewable by both the CRA and the Federal Court at the request of the taxpayer.

If the taxpayer who is suspected of owing over $50,000 in unpaid taxes in a year continues to refuse to comply with a CRA request, the budget also promises to impose a 10 per cent penalty if the government successfully goes through the costly process of getting a compliance order from a judge.

“The proposed penalty… would create an incentive for taxpayers to comply with the original request for information or assistance,” reads the budget.

Cancel your cellphone plan online

Annoyed by the constant barrage of hoops and retention offers cellphone companies throw at you after forcing you to call them to cancel your service? So is the government apparently.

The budget promises to amend the Telecommunications Act to compel cellphone carriers to provide “self-service” options like an online portal to allow customers to change or end their plans with their provider.

The changes will also bar cellphone companies from charging customers a fee to switch to another carrier and they will also have to inform their clients of other plans when their contract is coming to term.

Coupe du monde de VTT cross-country 2024 à Mairiporã : Deuxième place pour Victor Koretzky, Loana Lecomte 21e chez les femmes

La première étape de la Coupe du monde de VTT 2024 s'est déroulée du 12 au 14 avril à Mairiporã, au Brésil.

La saison de la Coupe du monde de VTT ira pour la troisième fois au Brésil après 2005 et 2022, à Mairiporã puis à Araxá, la semaine prochaine.

Les meilleurs vététistes du monde se retrouvent à cette occasion pour prendre la température de cette saison olympique qui marquera une trêve estivale pour les JO de Paris 2024 . Pour rappel, aux Jeux Olympiques , le VTT Mountain Bike consiste en une épreuve de cross-country (une chez les hommes, une chez les femmes).

Chez les femmes, la championne olympique aux Jeux Olympiques de Rio 2016 , Jenny Rissveds s'est imposée. La Française Loana Lecomte termine 21e à plus de cinq minutes de la tête de la course.

Un peu plus tard, ses homologues masculins se sont particulièrement illustrés avec notamment une magnifique deuxième place pour Victor Koretzky , arrachée au sprint, tandis que ses compatriotes Jordan Sarrou et Thomas Griot ont terminé dans le Top 10.

Respectivement classés 4e et 5e, Sarrou et le Chilien Martin Vidaurre Kossmann se sont même retrouvés sur le podium, car en format olympique les cinq premiers athlètes ont droit à cet honneur.

C'est l'Américain Christopher Blevins , champion des États-Unis, qui s'est imposé après avoir attendu le dernier tour pour lancer une attaque qui s'est avérée payante à l'arrivée. Le Suisse Filippo Colombo a complété le podium.

Parmi les autres coureurs tricolores, Joshua Dubau avait pris la tête de la course pendant la quatrième boucle, mais il s'est fait devancer en fin de parcours. Il a terminé 12e.

Voilà un début de saison prometteur pour les Bleus !

Coupe du monde de VTT cross-country 2024 à Mairiporã : résumé de la course femmes

Première course de la saison de la Coupe du monde de VTT cross-country à Mairiporã, près de São Paulo au Brésil. La vainqueur de la Coupe du monde de VTT cross-country 2023 Puck Pieterse est absente, tout comme la championne du monde Pauline Ferrand-Prévot , préférant ne pas se déplacer en Amérique du Sud pour se préserver.

La Française Loana Lecomte est bien alignée au départ de la course. Malgré son statut de favorite, la vice-championne du monde 2023 n'a pas réussi une grande course, n'étant à aucun moment en course pour la victoire. Elle termine à la 21e place.

À la mi-course, un trio se détache à l'avant de la course : la Suédoise Jenny Rissveds championne olympique aux JO de Rio 2016 et les deux Américaines Savilia Blunk et Haley Batten .

À l'amorce du dernier tour, Haley Batten et Jenny Rissveds sont à la lutte pour la victoire. Haley Batten rayonne techniquement, notamment dans les descentes. Elle vise sa première victoire en Coupe du monde. Mais c'est la championne olympique qui prend la tête au meilleur des moments. Derrière, Haley Batten chute dans un virage et Savilia Blunk en profite pour lui ravir la seconde place.

Jenny Rissveds s'impose pour la cinquième fois sur le format olympique en Coupe du monde en 1 h 17 m 18 s. Un exploit qui en rappelle un autre, toujours au Brésil, celui de son sacre olympique en 2016.

« Je me sentais très bien. Mon but était surtout d'avoir un bon rythme en début de course. J'ai été très patiente, Batten et Blunk m'ont attaquée à plusieurs reprises mais je suis restée sereine », a déclaré Jenny Rissveds au micro de Whoop .

Chiara Teocchi et Jolanda Neff terminent dans le top 5, et donc dans le podium, car en format olympique les 5 premières athlètes ont droit à cet honneur.
