The 15 Best Chicago Tours for 2024
Alejandro Reyes | Choose Chicago
One of the best ways to sightsee your way through a new city is with the help of a local. With this in mind, U.S. News rounded up some of Chicago 's best guided tours. Whether you're sailing past Willis Tower on a river cruise or sampling some of Chicago's best deep-dish pizza on a foodie excursion, you'll gain a cultural and historical understanding of the Windy City during these tours.
Chicago Architecture Foundation River Cruise
Price: From $54 Duration: 1.5 hours
The Chicago Architecture Foundation's River Cruise ferries passengers along the Chicago River as docents from the Chicago Architecture Center regale them with the stories behind more than 50 notable buildings. The volunteer docents repeatedly win high praise from reviewers for their in-depth knowledge of the city's history and its structures. Many reviewers called this the best thing to do in Chicago. The cruising vessels, part of the Chicago's First Lady Cruises fleet, can carry up to 250 people and boast full-service bars and open-air upper decks.
For a different perspective of the city's iconic architecture, consider the twilight sailing, which costs a few dollars extra. For an additional $5, you can also gain admittance to the Chicago Architecture Center (which usually costs $14 on its own).

Many travelers are familiar with Chicago's distinct architecture, but its equally captivating indoor spaces are not as well known. This tour reveals interior architectural details that visitors might otherwise miss. Guides take participants inside some of Chicago's most stunning buildings to admire elements like a gilded 80-foot-high ceiling, art deco lobbies, early Frank Lloyd Wright designs and rooms with stained-glass mosaics. Reviewers describe this tour, which involves about 1 1/2 miles of walking, as an informative and entertaining way to learn about the history of Chicago and its diverse, distinctive buildings. Others said this tour is great for first-time visitors and locals alike.
Tours operate Thursday through Monday at 11 a.m. Once you've toured all of the buildings at the street level, consider the company's Chicago Pedway tour, which tours the downtown underground tunnels that residents use to stay warm and dry during bad weather.

Participants rave about the guides for their storytelling abilities and say the length of the tour is perfect for when you need a break from the city's more touristy activities.

Big Bus Chicago – The Big Loop - Red Route
Price: Adults from $49.50; kids from $35.10 Duration: 2 hours
Big Bus Chicago's hop-on, hop-off tours invite tourists to tailor their sightseeing excursions to their preferences by allowing them to spend as much time as they want at any of the 11 stops on the company's red route. Tour-takers can "hop off" a bus and explore any of the top attractions featured along the way, such as Skydeck Chicago , Navy Pier or Millennium Park, and then "hop on" a later bus. If you don't get off the bus, the entire route takes about two hours. Your ticket is valid for 24 hours, so you can hop on and off as much you please.
Buses run every 30 minutes starting at 10 a.m. daily and include prerecorded commentary in both English and Spanish. Reviews from recent travelers were mixed: Some riders loved the convenience of the bus, saying it puts you within easy walking distance of the city's best attractions, but others were disappointed with the quality of the prerecorded commentary and said you should try to seek out the few busses that feature a live guide. If you want to ensure you'll have a live guide on your bus, consider booking the nonstop, 90-minute Sunset Live Tour, which is offered from May to October.
Secret Food Tours: Chicago

What's more, there's a secret dish revealed the day of the tour. Plus, tours are capped at 12 participants to ensure an intimate experience. Reviewers say guides do an excellent job of highlighting not only Chicago's distinct food scene, but also its history and architecture. Travelers can purchase drinks at the onboard cash bar. Tours are offered daily spring through autumn (weather permitting) and depart from Navy Pier. Shoreline Sightseeing also offers architecture cruises along the Chicago River.

Chicago Tours
Chicago is a sprawling city, comprised of dozens of neighborhoods with unique characteristics and singular attractions. It can be hard to approach exploring the city without an insider’s knowledge of the best way to get to Wicker Park, or the top pizza place in River North. Fortunately, there’s a wide variety of tours available in Chicago to help visitors make the most of their time in the city while easily navigating the best attractions, areas, and cuisines.
For first-time visitors, bus tours are a smart option. They can help you see more of the city than you would be able to via mass transit (without some very complex planning, that is). Bus tours also allow you to see the highlights of the city via a pre-planned route that maximizes sightseeing potential and minimizes driving time. Hop-on hop-off options are key here, too, as they facilitate exploring the city at your own pace, and visiting attractions that pique your interest from the bus. There are even themed bus tours that cover topics like food, drink, and Chicago culture.
Chicago boasts many types of tours beyond the typical bus tour, however. If you’d like to experience Lake Michigan or the Chicago River – two essential components to the city’s identity – then a boat tour is a smart option. You can choose a tour that simply showcases the lake, or one that highlights city architecture. Visitors can also opt to explore the via bike: take a guided tour or explore on your own. Given that Chicago is a very walkable city, it’s unsurprising that another popular type of tour is a walking tour. These are usually themed around a concept like food, drink, pop culture, local legends, and more. The Chicago Architecture Center also runs many architecture-specific tours, and many companies offer guided tours (on foot or via bus) related to culinary concepts.
Whatever kind of tour you’re interested in, you’ll find a number of excellent options in Chicago. Here’s an overview of the most popular tour types in Chicago.
The classic option for exploring Chicago, bus tours come in a variety of styles ranging from guided tours of the North and South Sides to fully-narrated hop-on hop-off tours.
With Lake Michigan and the Chicago River being so important to the city, it’s no surprise that you can tour the city via boat. Choose a theme, or just enjoy the sail.
Explore the city in an eco-friendly way by making your way through the parks and trails of Chicago on two wheels. Take a self-guided tour, or opt for the full experience.
Walking Tours
In spite of its massive size, Chicago is the ideal city for a walking tour. Explore a neighborhood, a theme, a concept, or a story on these guided excursions.
If you’re interested in Chicago’s culinary scene, then a food tour is a must. They’re organized around neighborhoods or cuisines and are perfect for foodies.
Architecture Tours
Chicago’s architectural legacy is among the best in the country. Enjoy the amazing, inspiring buildings that populate the city skyline on an architecture tour.

In October 2023, Bad Bunny dropped his fifth studio album “nadie sabe lo que va a pasar mañana,” which he claims is a nod to his trap roots and for the day-one fans.
Thing is, this record is packed with so many catchy beats and hooky choruses that it should be easily accessible to listeners both new and old.
Over 22 tracks, the rapper delivers 81 minutes of pulsing club tracks meant to get crowds hyped like the hypnotic “HIBIKI,” the dreamy “FINA” and the alternately spacey and throbbing “CYBERTRUCK.”
For our money though, the standout is the lush throwback “Monaco” with its cinematic score under Bad Bunny’s impeccable flow (plus, it doesn’t hurt that the music video features Al Pacino).
If you want to hear the already very popular record in its entirety, you can stream “nadie sabe lo que va a pasar mañana” here .
Artists featured on the album include Arcángel, Bryant Meyers, Feid, La Paciencia, Mag, Mora, Ñengo Flow, Tainy, and Young Miko.
The 30-year-old Vega Baja native (whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio) was first spotted leaving a restaurant with Jenner, 27, by TMZ in February 2023.
Three months later, they made their first official public appearance at a Lakers-Warriors NBA playoff game on May 12.
“I know something is going to come out. I know [people are] going to say something. People know everything about me, so what’s left for me to protect? My private life, my personal life,” Bad Bunny told Rolling Stone in an interview published in June.
In late September, the pair appeared in a Gucci Valigeria luggage ad which fans have speculated is their official couple announcement.
On Dec. 17, the two officially split. Two weeks later, they were seen celebrating New Years together near Barbados with good friends but confirmed they are “not back together.”
Many of the biggest stars in music are hitting the road this year.
Here are just five of our favorites you won’t want to miss live in the near future.

Frankie Beverly & Maze farewell tour features legends of R&B and soul
- By Eddy "Precise" Lamarre
- Apr 28, 2024
On the evening of April 27, 2024, the United Center in Chicago witnessed an unforgettable farewell performance by the legendary Frankie Beverly, who was joined by iconic openers El DeBarge and Chaka Khan. The I Wanna Thank You farewell tour marked the conclusion of Beverly’s illustrious career and a celebration of decades of influential music.
The night started with El DeBarge, who effortlessly transported the audience back to the heyday of falsetto with his timeless charm and masterful vocal control. Known for his piercing falsetto that dominated the airwaves during the peak of his career, DeBarge proved he still holds the throne in the realm of high-pitched soulful melodies. His performance was a poignant reminder of why his music has endured, resonating with both longtime fans and new listeners.
Following DeBarge, Chaka Khan took the stage, amplifying the energy to remarkable heights. With a career spanning over 50 years, Khan’s performance was spectacular. Her voice, powerful and seemingly effortless, filled the arena, hitting every note with immaculate precision. Khan began her set with a short video montage of her hits, which served both as a nostalgic recap and a vibrant showcase of her dynamic range. Opting to perform a selection of B-sides, Khan celebrated her greatest hits and also illuminated her extensive catalog, highlighting her versatility and ongoing relevance in the music industry.
The climax of the evening was Frankie Beverly’s performance with Maze. Despite recent vocal complications, Beverly’s presence was a radiant display of resilience and joy. His songs, particularly classics like “We Are One,” “Golden Time of Day,” and “Happy Feelings,” are anthems of unity and happiness. As he performed, the audience was invited not just to listen but to participate, singing along and contributing to an atmosphere filled with love and collective joy. It was a powerful reminder of how his music has served as a soundtrack to many lives, fostering a sense of community and positivity.
The emotional resonance of the concert was further amplified when Mayor Johnson declared April 27 as “Frankie Beverly & Maze Day,” a fitting tribute to Beverly’s impact on the music scene and the cultural life of Chicago. This gesture from the city underscored the deep appreciation for Beverly’s contributions and his lasting legacy.
The concert was not only a farewell tour but also a master class in musical longevity and transformation. Each artist demonstrated adaptability and relevance, traits that have enabled them to resonate across different eras and continue to captivate audiences worldwide. The night was a poignant reflection on the passage of time, the enduring power of music, and the unbreakable bonds it creates.
The concert was a spectacular showcase of talent, resilience, and artistic brilliance. El DeBarge reminded us of the enchanting power of falsetto, Chaka Khan demonstrated the sheer force of her vocal prowess, and Frankie Beverly, alongside Maze, enveloped all in attendance in an aura of positivity and unity. This farewell was not just a goodbye but a celebration of timeless music that will continue to inspire and uplift for generations to come.
Take a look at a few photos from the tour below.
