Are you looking for lush jungles? What about awe inspiring wildlife and opportunities to make the world a better place? As you start to do your research on volunteer abroad programs, keep in mind a few things that you need to pay attention to, to make sure your experience is what you have been search for your whole life.

Think to yourself, “what do I want when I volunteer in Costa Rica?”, “what is important to me?”. Everyone is different, which means your goals, needs, and wants could likely vary from people who have left those reviews and ratings that you are looking at.

So stop right where you are! Yes, right there. Good! First, you need to know where to start, so here’s how to actually pick a volunteer abroad program , and while doing so, pay attention to these factors:

  • Rating and reviews from volunteers who have taken the time to talk about their experiences. You’ll start to get the gist of what volunteer abroad programs in Costa Rica are right for you.
  • Is information clear and accessible? If you have to go digging just to find details that should be in clear sight. TURN BACK NOW… before it’s too late!
  • Organizational partnerships are important. Check out who the organization directly works with. They can range from all over the place; whether that be in your community or half the world away.
  • Resources for alumni , like how to take your experience and make that resume of yours shine!
  • Does the organization respect and care for local culture , environment, and individuals? Look into their social media and websites to get a feel of their morals and values.
  • Level of support and assistance . Do you have faith that you can count on them when you are in need.
  • R-E-S-P-E-C-T ...find out what it means to YOU! Within your area of interest, consider a program that makes people that you look up to go “WOW. They did whaaaaat?!”

GoAbroad’s 2024 round up

2. Maximo Nivel - Medical Volunteer in Costa Rica —9.4 Rating

“I was a volunteer in the physical therapy department at a senior living facility in the city of Cartago. I worked alongside other students from a local university and provided assistance to them however they needed it during their morning therapy sessions with the residents...The residents were very fun to talk to as they had many interesting stories to share and were also very interested in learning more about me! The clinical supervisor Juan was a great teacher, and the other students were also very welcoming towards me. Working with these students helped me meet some local Costa Ricans around my own age and I developed some great friendships with them...Overall, this experience would be very beneficial to a PT student who has some background in clinical treatment as it will allow you to participate more at your site. However, even if your skills are limited you can still learn a lot by being assertive in asking questions and trying to take on more responsibilities. The more you put into this experience, the more you'll get out of it!” — Maximo Nivel alum

  • Why? Medical and healthcare projects provide volunteers the opportunity to work in hospitals, clinics, assisted living, and other healthcare facilities. Volunteers work alongside doctors, nurses, therapists, and other medical professionals. With the choice of a duration of one week up to one year, you will improve your Spanish skills, get school credit, and gain international experience. Plus, you can earn the President's Volunteer Service Award if you are a U.S. resident!

3. United Planet - Volunteer Abroad in Costa Rica —9.75 rating

“It was amazing. There are so many beautiful places and I believe the volunteers should be given the opportunity to be taken to some of them. I'm always super happy but now I definitely feel like I have a more "simple" perspective on things. I appreciate little things way more now and I'm glad it is that way.” — United Planet alum

  • Where? San Jose
  • When? Year round
  • Why? United Planet is one of the most affordable ways to volunteer and help local communities in developing countries! Why are they more affordable than other organizations? Firstly, they are just a handful of passionate people working hard to help volunteers and local communities around the world. They don't have huge overheads—they are just volunteers who know they can do a better job. Be more than just a volunteer... join the world’s fastest growing independent volunteer organization!

4. GoEco - Sea Turtle Conservation in Costa Rica —9.0 Rating

“My experience volunteering at a turtle conservation in Costa Rica was absolutely life changing. Seeing how people in Costa Rica live their day to day lives was such a positive addition to the experience. Going to school in San Jose and learning the language was something I never thought I would be able to do. It was so incredible being able to actually apply my knowledge right away and test out what I had learned on my host family, who would also help me with my Spanish. Actually getting to the turtle conservation was a feeling I don't even know how to describe. Collecting the eggs from my first nest is something I will never forget, I still get chills thinking about it. The staff were so kind and caring and really helped to make sure the volunteers were getting the most out of their time at the conservation. I never thought I'd meet people from Austria or Switzerland and now I have friends from across the world whom I still keep in touch with. Overall this was the most incredible experience of my life and I would recommend it to anyone.” — Pupu Rangi Nature Sanctuary alum

  • Where? Talamanca
  • Why? No matter what type of volunteer project you elect to do, all volunteer work with GoEco in Costa Rica will be extremely rewarding. It is amazing what one can learn by immersing themselves in a culture that is different than their own, especially in Costa Rica where the people and the culture reflect a “pura vida” way of life. This phrase literally translates to “pure life”, but it has a much more profound meaning once you experience the exciting land. Walk tropical beaches, release newborn sea turtles, and take a new adventure every day. Volunteering in Costa Rica with animals will let you witness a true marvel of nature and meet interesting people from this region and participants from around the world.

5. GVI - Volunteer and Teach English in Costa Rica —9.5 Rating

“There are so many amazing aspects of the programme so it's hard to choose just one. I think that the support provided by GVI, not only for the El Cocal community, but also for the volunteers is incredible. I was made to feel so at home and welcome due to the amazing staff members here. I also think that the structure of the programme and the planning that goes into working with the kids and teaching English is another great aspect as it provides the community with a sense of stability. A final great aspect is the way in which Moises, a member of the El Cocal community, has started to work with GVI. I believe that this is a great step forward as it provides the kids with a role model while also changing his life for the better. Overall I believe that the support provided by GVI to El Cocal is the best aspect as it also makes me believe that I am making a difference and by giving the kids and adults a platform to learn English it increases their chances of a better future.” — GVI alum

Volunteer Costa Rica, and you will have the opportunity to learn basic Spanish and work with children and adults and experience Costa Rican culture.

6. Carpe Diem Education - Central America Immersion —10.0 Rating

“My experience with Carpe not only transformed my world view, but it taught me a lot about living with a group and it gave me the tools I needed to be a confident independent traveller. It also helped me realize the importance of being an active member in society- whether that means becoming very involved in politics, controlling your environmental footprint, or buying from local and organic companies. It is such a privilege to be born in the United States, a country that has so much influence in the world, but it is what we do with that privilege that matters.” — Carpe Diem Education alum

  • Where? Rural Areas, San Jose, Santo Domingo
  • Why? Experiential education. Community. Intercultural exchange. It's how Carpe Diem Education connects with and gives back to the global communities we interact with. Learn a foreign language, stay with a host family, and participate in a volunteer project on a gap semester or year around the world.

7. Volunteer World - Best Volunteer Programs in Costa Rica —9.6 rating

“Natuwa is a very special place and my experience is really beyond expectations! I’ve been welcome since the beginning as if I was part of the family. Rodolfo and the team are great people dedicated to the animals and work extremely hard to give them the best life possible. The sanctuary is impeccably well looked after and everyone does their best to make you feel at home and to teach you something. Be prepared to work hard as this is no place for parties or slackers, but at the end you will feel really rewarded and part of something very special. I will miss everyone so much.” — Volunteer World alum

“Greenheart Travel has an excellent program, allowing students from all over the world to immerse themselves in a different culture. Through Greenheart Travel I was able to volunteer in Proyecto Asis for two weeks, where my Spanish improved, I was able to meet great people, and eat delicious food. The host families were wonderful and treated you as if you were one of their kids, and the people around were kind as well. I was able to see and experience what it feels like to actually be apart of the Costa Rican culture. I was able to take care of animals, learn how to cook traditional foods, and visit the beautiful scenery Costa Rica has to offer. Thank You Greenheart!” — Greenheart Travel alum

  • Where? Costa Rica

9. IVHQ - Volunteer Healthcare & Medicine in Costa Rica —9.67 Rating

"During an 11 hour flight to Costa Rica, all i could feel was stress about how my trip was going to be, the house i'm gonna stay in, the family, my roommates, my project, how am i going to communicate with my basic Spanish. I did not know then i was embarking on the best experience of my life and all i needed was excitement. From the first moment i stepped on this country i felt it was gonna be great. Communication required some hand gestures but that led to the funniest moments as well! The family i stayed with was amazing, IVHQ and everyone working there were more than helpful and accommodating, my roommates and everyone i met will always be my friends." — Read more reviews here

Psst: Physical and occupational therapists—there is a particular need for YOU to serve in Costa Rica!

More resources for volunteering abroad in costa rica.

We’re hoping some of these programs already have you packing your hiking boots (and bug spray) and singing “Livin’ la Pura Vida”...or is is “Vida Loca”! However, if you aren’t a Ricky Martin fan or none of these programs are quite what you’re looking for, take a gander through our entire Costa Rica volunteer abroad program directory . There are filters galore, allowing you to really hunt down the program that you’ve been daydreaming about.

Overwhelmed by the options? We get it. Our Online Advisors are here to save the day . Just tell us what you’re looking for, and we’ll do your homework for you / send you a handful of specific recommendations to your preferences.

Pro tip: One of the most important steps to figuring out which volunteer abroad programs in New Zealand are right for you—that many people unfortunately skip—is identifying your WHY(s). Why are you volunteering abroad? Why volunteer abroad in Costa Rica in the first place? To learn and get more familiar with the culture, to travel far and wide, to make buddies from all over the world, to gain skills? Set goals, then use them to influence the Costa Rica volunteer abroad programs you’re thinking about.

And last but not least, MONEY! Sometimes you can find organizations where your work for them is enough and you don’t have to pay (other than the plane ticket that is). However, next time you ask yourself, “ Why do I have to PAY to volunteer? ”, understand that the money you are giving is going towards a great cause and you are helping the organization keep working towards a better world. Donations and funding is important to a lot of NGO and non-profit organizations. So again, think back to identifying your WHY.

Now’s your chance—volunteer abroad in Costa Rica this year!

Costa Rica is a country unlike any other. With mountainous views, monkeys, sloths, sea turtles...pretty much all the wildlife you could wish for; and you can be a part of it! Choosing to volunteer, seek more knowledge in your area of interest, and help others around the world can only make your life that much brighter. So be Kiwi-ck (HA, get it like quick) and why wait? This year is your year! You will be amazed at what you can accomplish if you become a global citizen.

2-Week Itinerary

Meet your fellow high school student travelers and one or more of your leaders in Miami, and fly together to San José or Liberia, Costa Rica. To learn more about how we organize travel, click here.

Upon arrival, travel to a secluded ecolodge and working ranch. Settle into your rustic accommodations and participate in an in-depth program orientation to discuss life in Costa Rica, break the ice with games, and get to know your group. Explore the property with local guides and learn about permaculture, renewable energy, and sustainable practices at the lodge. Take a morning yoga class, visit a coffee farm, and kayak on the calm surface of Lake Arenal. Follow hiking trails through the rainforest to waterfalls and swimming holes. During your time here, learn about Costa Rica’s history, language, and culture, get to know your group and leaders, set goals for your independent project, and prepare for the rest of your trip.

Travel to your host community, a small town surrounded by lush mountains and fertile farmland. Immerse yourself in everyday life as you work with warm and welcoming Costa Rican people to undertake several community-initiated volunteer projects. Lend a hand laying the foundation for a community center, or shadow a farmer to learn how to milk a cow or harvest bananas and pineapple. In the evenings, relax with Tico friends, hike to a hidden swimming hole, learn new songs on the guitar, play games of fútbol in the town plaza, or join local fiestas. Each Putney group lives and partners with different host communities and do not meet during the program.

Stay overnight in an ecolodge perched in the mountains overlooking the southern Pacific coastline. Snorkel off a secluded beach, take a surfing lesson with guides, or hike to a beautiful vista for a picnic lunch. In the evening, go salsa dancing, take a night hike under the stars, or play guitar around a beach bonfire.

Near the end of your program, undertake a final challenge with your group. Spend a day whitewater rafting with professional guides through the Río Sarapiquí or Río Pacuare, surrounded by breathtaking, lush rainforest.

Fly from San José or Liberia, Costa Rica, to Miami with your group and a leader, then continue on to your final destination. To learn more about how we organize travel, click here.

3-Week Itinerary

Take a weekend excursion to explore Costa Rica’s stunning coastal rainforest, pristine beaches, and astounding biodiversity. Stay in bungalows, hike to a remote waterfall, interview local wildlife experts, and scout for howler monkeys and sloths.

The four-week Costa Rica program also visits a remote jungle lodge, explores Corcovado National Park by foot, and learns about conservation and research initiatives on the Osa Peninsula.

Meet some of our featured leaders. Please note that these may not be your leaders for the program.

2023_scra_david-felsen

In 1949, declaring itself a peaceful nation, Costa Rica disbanded its army and has since enjoyed seven decades of democracy and peace. Known for its astounding biodiversity, warm and inviting culture, and miles of tropical beaches, Costa Rica is a pioneer in innovative approaches to ecotourism. Although a small country, the nation boasts incredible geographic diversity—from tropical rainforest to pristine beaches to active volcanoes.

Spanish is the official language of Costa Rica.

Costa Rica is a tropical country with two seasons: wet and dry. We visit during the wet season. It rains often in brief, heavy showers rather than all-day storms. In the host communities, daytime temperatures range from 75–95°F (23–35°C), while nighttime temperatures drop between 60–70°F (15–21°C).

Costa Rican cuisine is hearty fare with rice, beans, and a delicious array of tropical fruits, such as papaya, mango, and pineapple, at almost every meal. A typical lunch consists of gallo pinto (rice and beans), fish or chicken, vegetables, cheese, tortillas, and fruit.

What to Expect

Review specific program expectations here. For more general information:

During your time in Costa Rica, you can expect to work on several different volunteer projects—light construction projects where you may learn to mix cement and lay blocks or paint a community building, environmental projects such as planting seedlings or shadowing local farmers, and educational projects such as organize after class activities or summer camps for local children and adults. The focus of this program is learning about another culture by forming meaningful relationships with local people and undertaking a shared service experience together. You should come to the summer with an open-mind, eager to participate in new experiences and interested in exploring another culture and way of life. Everyone participates in all of the group’s projects on a rotating basis, and lends a hand in meal preparation and cleanup. To learn more about our Service programs click here.

In addition to group projects, pursue an independent project and explore an aspect of local culture of particular interest to you—learn to cook gallo pinto, interview local girls and women, or organize a community-wide soccer tournament.

Proficiency in Spanish is not required; however, students who study Spanish in school will have opportunities to practice while communicating with local people. Students who do not speak Spanish will have the opportunity to learn some basic language skills.

This is a physically active summer travel program. The service work and afternoon activities can be strenuous, and you can expect to spend most of each day outside; playing with local children, surfing, trekking , and swimming. You do not need to be at peak fitness to participate, but it is important that you have a desire to be physically active, and that you are excited about trying all activities.

Living accommodations in the host community are very simple. We live together as a group in a community building or school. We sleep on camping pads and share simple bathrooms and showers. During excursions, we sleep in beds in simple but comfortable ecolodges, bungalows, or family-run inns. Leaders reside together with the students throughout the program.

In the host community we eat delicious, home-cooked meals prepared by local cooks. Each day several students from the group form cooking and cleaning crews and help the cooks prepare meals, Tico-style. During excursions, we eat most meals in restaurants and occasionally visit local markets to shop for picnic lunches.

Destination Overview

Well known for exotic wildlife, lush rainforests, active volcanoes, pristine beaches, and more – Costa Rica has been a popular destination for nature lovers for decades. Consisting of only 0.03% of the world’s landmass, this small country still contains an amazing 5% of the world’s biodiversity. The countryside offers world famous surf, zip lining, and seemingly endless vistas. Yet amidst this treasure trove of plant and animal life lie communities in need of support.

Pura Vida Experience

¡Pura Vida! Earn 50 service hours while blazing a trail through the stunning Costa Rican countryside. Build, explore, eat, repeat in this fast paced and meaningful survey of Central America’s landscapes and communities.

Sandwiched between two oceans and 800 miles of coast line, the Costa Rican people live a comparatively comfortable lifestyle. The national motto of “Pura Vida” or “Pure Life” encapsulates the tendency of Costa Rican Ticos and Ticas to be lighthearted, accommodating, and genuine. The nation is often referred to as the region’s developmental success story due to its high standard of living, 96% literacy rate, and environmental initiatives.

This prosperity has attracted people from all over the world to visit the country as tourists or expatriates looking to settle in the tropics. The steady economic expansion has also attracted populations from the more turbulent neighboring countries of Nicaragua and Panama. Some of these immigrants can be described as economic refugees but many of them have abandoned their assets, families, and entire lives to avoid violence and political persecution.

Since these people and their families are undocumented, they are often forced to live in poverty. Having nowhere else to turn, these refugees form makeshift communities, referred to as slums, and begin to rely on each other for survival. Slum life fosters social illnesses like crime, drug use, and illiteracy but history has shown that with some help, these populations integrate and become significant contributors to their new home. Each summer, GoBeyond students embark on high school community service trips to Costa Rica so they can lend a hand to these populations and explore the magnificence of their country.

“The last day of our high school trip to Costa Rica, we went to the Los Lagos resort, hiked the mountain to get a view of the volcano, and hung out at the pool and natural hot springs. Before leaving, we went to see the three crocodiles, turtles, and frogs they had on the property! Then we went to Termales Del Bosque, the hotel where we were staying, and went to the hot springs that were in the middle of the jungle. One of the pools was a whopping 48 degrees celcius; Kenta was the only one who went in all the way. The next day, we woke up to the surprise of going horseback riding! The ride was pleasant and peaceful, trotting through the rain-forest and enjoying the view from atop the hill.” -Alex W. - Oak Hill, VA

PURA VIDA! Green countryside and breathtaking sights are what Costa Rica is all about.  One of the most biodiverse and ecologically rich countries, Costa Rica is home to lush rainforests and a wide array of flora and fauna. The country has gone to great lengths to preserve these natural habitats. Costa Rica is also one of the most cosmopolitan countries in the region with diverse cultural heritage and traditions drawing from many countries all over Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas. The country is considered an advanced developing country, one of the most stable democracies in Latin America, and a leader in environmental sustainability. However, like any emerging economy, opportunities are not always evenly distributed and many of the smaller villages and more remote regions of the country are much less developed.

You have the opportunity to make a very real and immediate impact working in costa rica, actively fostering new development in their towns, schools, & coffee plantations, our region of focus is called dota (known locally as los santos). dota is a mountainous, lush, tropical environment full of wildlife and foliage, approximately three hours south of san jose. the chief source of income throughout the region is coffee. our service work will focus on sustainable development and social entrepreneurship. as part of our service work, we’ll learn about the entire supply chain of the coffee business from seed to plant to factory to cup. we’ll learn about the farmers, the pickers, the cooperatives, the roasters all the way to the baristas. we’ll also learn about local entrepreneurs who are developing low-impact eco-tourism as well as ecological and sustainable farming programs..

“Pura Vida” is so much more than a greeting, though often heard as such. It is an optimism embraced wholeheartedly. It is the belief that life is short, and generally good. No matter how much or how little we have in life, we can all choose to embrace the moment and live life fully. There is a reason Costa Rica is the most peaceful country on the planet!

Discover your true leadership potential!

window.tgpQueue.add('tgpli-66124b4ee05de') our mission is to inspire the next generation to realize their potential to transform the world and their unique role in it.

At Global Leadership Adventures, we believe leaders are made, not born , and that leadership is a life skill than can and should be developed.

It is GLA’s belief that young people – given the opportunity and privilege to embrace different cultures, confront timely challenges and develop their own unique leadership styles – will make this world the kind of place we can all share and explore together.

From role play to style exploration, GLA’s intentional program design weaves this approach into the daily experience for our students. Directors and Mentors assign Leaders of the Day on-program to get our students out of their comfort zone and into leadership roles within the group.

No matter whether you or the teen in your family is an introvert or an extrovert, we know that anyone can be a leader in their own way, and there’s not only one way to be a leader.

This holistic approach to leadership creates a lifelong impact for our young leaders.

A journey rooted in extraordinary impact.

Our story begins with GLA Founder Fred Swaniker in 2003. Fred, a Ghana native, TED fellow and entrepreneur from Stanford University, envisioned a high school designed to develop Africa’s future leaders regardless of the student’s income or background.

After joining forces with Chris Bradford and Peter Mombaur, Fred’s former classmate and mentor, Fred’s vision was brought to life with the establishment of the African Leadership Academy, a revolutionary pan-African, nonprofit high school in Johannesburg.

ALA’s success was immediate and profound. When surrounded by a diverse group of peers and immersed in leadership development, students began to truly believe they held the power to change the world around them.

As a way to expand the reach of ALA’s successful curriculum, Fred, Chris and Peter created a summer program in 2004, this time welcoming students from around the world and planting the seeds for Global Leadership Adventures. The first program ran in South Africa 2005.

Global Leadership Adventures grew into a global team in 2006 with the expertise of Andrew Motiwalla, who joined the team as a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer, with a background in operating global service-learning projects and developing experiential education programs.

Values central to the Peace Corps– immersive experience, sustainability and working side-by-side with local communities – were infused into GLA’s program design early on and continue to be building blocks for the dozens of programs our organization operates worldwide.

Fred Swaniker was honored as a pioneer by Time in its annual list of 100 Most Influential People of 2019. This was in recognition for his continued work to make a meaningful difference in the world through innovation in education.

Global Leadership Adventures has long been a recognized leader in international volunteering and community service programs for high school students.

Over the years, we have also expanded into providing summer volunteer programs for other age groups, such as middle school students, as well as travel internships for high school students that offer leadership learning and career development opportunities in partnership with global nonprofits and social enterprises. Since our founding, the elements of community service and cross-cultural exchange have remained cornerstones on our programs.

GLA is part of the Terra Education family of program providers:

Costa Rica Explorations

Community Service Trips for High School Students in Costa Rica

“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give,” said Winston Churchill once. The best way to teach that to your students or children is by gifting them the learning and growth opportunities of a community service trip.

We at Costa Rica Explorations believe that service is a two-way street. As Churchill said, by giving through service or donations we help others to make a living or improve their way of life. But at the same time, the powerful teachings that this process gives both parts of the process makes those receiving and those giving better human beings.

But a successful community service trip, especially when those traveling are youngsters like high school students , will depend on choosing the right place, the right program, and the right partner to help you connect with those that actually need and appreciate the service.

Teaching Gardening to Kids in Costa Rica

Why Costa Rica is Perfect for High School Community Service Trips

Costa Rica is actually the perfect setup for service learning trips for many reasons. First, consider that Costa Rica is a country with a lot of experience in the tourism industry; therefore your lodging, food, and transportation will be of high quality.

Costa Rica is a very secure country that declared its commitment to peace and education when in 1949 abolish the army and dedicated all of that budget to make elementary school free and mandatory. Therefore, Costa Rica is a very secure country to travel with young people.

Another thing to consider is that Costa Rica offers a great variety of types of service, from looking after wild animals in wildlife rescue centers to teaching small children English, or a combination of services. And in Costa Rica, you can also make your community service trip a Spanish immersion experience .

In the end, what you are looking for is a positive experience that will help your students grow and learn the importance of service. In Costa Rica, you will also have the best setup for making the experience positive, because even though there is a lot of necessity in this small country, Costa Rica is not a totally undeveloped country that could shock and alienate your young students. Students, teachers and parents will feel very welcomed here.

What to Look for When Researching Community Service Trips

The most important thing to look for is a strong local partnership that will ensure that the time and money your students and donors dedicate to the service trip will be valued and will make a real difference. You need to make sure that the service your student group will provide is authentic, valuable for both the volunteers as well as the local community, a collaboration, and that there is follow through after the trip is over.

Unless you have hands-on experience in the location you have chosen, or you have many old and reliable connections, it is challenging to achieve this on your own. Therefore, look for an experienced and trustworthy company to help you set up your international service opportunity.

Our Costa Rica student travel programs get to the heart of the needs of the local organizations we have partnered with. We help schools, community development organizations, senior centers, churches, the government-run daycares called CEN-CINAI . A lot of these organizations receive funding from the government, but not enough funding to fulfill all their needs. Therefore, it is left up to the organization or the institution to raise the extra funds required to complete projects through BINGOS, raffles, food sales, etc. Costa Rica Explorations works together in collaboration with these organizations to help them reach their goals through donations and volunteer work.

All of these local organizations are thankful for the help because it shows them that people care and believe in their cause. Giving them an extra “boost” with a donation makes their goal easier to achieve.

So, if you are organizing your community service trip, we suggest you ask the following questions:

  • Who will the local service partner organization be? It should be a recognized organization or institution (like Costa Rica Explorations ) that will be responsible for their part of the work to make sure the service transcends smoothly.
  • How long have you been working with this local service partner organization? The longer the partnership, the better they work together and achieve their goals.
  • What are their exact needs? The company should know what the local service partner organization needs so you can decide if the service is right for your group.
  • What efforts has the local service partner organization put forth to start to achieve their goals? Don’t just give fish, teach them how to fish! That is how you make a difference.
  • Who would be benefiting from the service? Why is the service so important? The company should be very clear about this answer.
  • What kind of ongoing support does the local service partner organization need to make sure the service work/donation is utilized to its full potential? The last thing you want is to have your time, effort and donation go to nothing.
  • Who will be in charge of following up / monitoring progress? This is extremely important. The company you work with should be able to follow up with the local service partner organization and make sure the process you started keeps moving forward.

Teaching Costa Rican Kids | High School Student Trip

What Type of Community Service to Consider

This is such an important question to ask yourself and your students. Not every group can work with senior citizens or with sheltered dogs and cats. Before committing to any community service trip, ask yourself the following questions and discuss with your partner company to decide what would be the best option for you:

  • What makes your students’ hearts beat? Try to discover what inspires the majority of your group, what are they passionate about it. Of course in the process, you must also bring to light what set of skills they have to offer and what kind of resources they can objectively secure.
  • Do you want your trip to be science-focused? Then consider a project that relates to conservation, reforestation, water quality, national park maintenance, botanical garden maintenance, school gardens development, recycling program development, etc.
  • Do you want it to be educational-focused? You can do your service about teaching English, giving recycling workshops, developing conservation workshops, etc.
  • Do you want it to be animal-focused? Consider then finding a company that partners with animal shelters or wildlife rescue centers.
  • Do you want it to be community-development focused? Then your trip could concentrate on improving local parks or soccer fields, roads, community centers, sidewalks, bathrooms.

As we told you before, Costa Rica offers opportunities to develop community service trips that focus on any of those themes, and Costa Rica Explorations already has strong partnerships with local organizations in any of those lines of actions.

How to Ensure that the International Community Service Program is of Value to Participants & Volunteers

A community service trip can aim for many goals, but in the end, the most important thing is that volunteers are able to understand that with a little effort they can help make a big difference in the world.

To achieve that, volunteers must be active participants of the entire process of the trip, from preparation to follow up. At Costa Rica Explorations , we implement the Service-Learning Model , which acknowledges that the impact of a community service volunteer experience has three phases: preparation, action, and reflection.

Costa Rica Explorations’ program leaders work with visiting teachers and students throughout all three phases. The preparation phase starts before the group arrives and involves teacher and students learning about the service experience they will participate in. During the program, they engage in the project, and each day they reflect upon their experiences and observations they are having, and lastly, they reflect upon their experience and set goals for future service work. These steps are essential to help plant the seed within volunteers to become life-long volunteers and to understand the positive impact they can make on the global community.

The hope is that through an international service experience, students and teachers and volunteers are empowered to find their own passion and seek out local service opportunities to make service an integral part of their daily life. The hope is that they are empowered to become community leaders.

Costa Rica Tours & Vacations

Travellers walking with tour guide in the jungle near Fortuna Waterfall in Costa Rica

Biodiverse, brilliantly colorful and naturally breathtaking, Costa Rica embraces a slower pace of life.

An adventure hotspot for some, a cultural haven for others and a tropical paradise for most, Costa Rica definitely lives up to its translation as the ‘rich coast.’ And as you journey under lush jungle canopies and through laidback surf towns, you’ll soon be rich with  memorable experiences.  Lean into the slower pace of life as you become a pro at spotting toucans in Monteverde’s  steamy cloud forests  or listening out for the distant whoop of white-faced capuchins in Manuel Antonio. The phrase ‘hustle and bustle’ isn’t in Costa Rica’s vocabulary, as you’d expect from a country whose unofficial motto is ‘ pura vida ’ – the pure life.

Culture and customs.

Costa Rican culture can be summed up in two words: 'pura vida', or the pure life. It's a greeting, farewell and a way to show appreciation. Like any good life motto, pura vida is better experienced than explained. It means being friendly and polite, taking it easy and being thankful for what you have. Costa Ricans' carefree way of life, coupled with living in one of Central America's most progressive and prosperous nations, makes the locals some of the happiest in the world.

You'll find that people in Costa Rica are generally in less of a hurry than most North Americans or Europeans. Following what is affectionately known as 'Tico time', people will often be fashionably late, except for things with schedules – Tico time does not apply at work, the movies or the train station.

Costa Ricans (or Ticos and Ticas) are known for their conflict-averse nature. Peace is so highly valued here that their army was abolished in 1949, with all funds reallocated to create an 'army' of teachers instead.

History and government

Ancient history.

Like most Central American countries, indigenous communities thrived for thousands of years as hunter-gatherers, and it's believed that humans have lived in Costa Rica's jungles and rainforests for as many as 10,000 years. However, with no urbanized civilization like the Aztecs or Mayas, and little to no cultural preservation during the time of Spanish colonization, not much is known about Costa Rica's true indigenous populations.

Colonization, independence, and trade

At the time of Spanish colonization, it was estimated that 400,000 people lived in what is now known as Costa Rica. Christopher Columbus arrived in the region in 1502 on his fourth voyage, leading to the settlement of the first Spanish colony in Costa Rica.

As settlements grew, indigenous populations dwindled due to disease and forced labor. After around a century, the population had fallen to 20,000, and a century later, down to 8000.

In 1821, the Americas broke free of Spanish control following the Mexican War of Independence. Costa Rica became part of the Federal Republic of Central America in 1823 before gaining complete independence in 1838

Costa Rica eventually found its feet in the global coffee trade, and by the end of the century, coffee crops accounted for nearly 90% of Costa Rica's exports and 80% of its foreign income. Not only was coffee production an indicator of wealth in Costa Rica, it was also a powerful political tool prompting the emergence of other industries, including the banana trade, which surpassed coffee exports in the early 20th century.

Costa Rica's economy relies on eco-tourism, and the country has championed the idea that the 'rich coast' refers not to resources dug from the ground but to the natural wonders above ground. The easygoing attitude of Ticos comes from a love of their country and pride that their democracy has endured in a conflict-ridden region.

Eating and drinking

Costa Rican cuisine is wholesome and fresh, with influence from  Spanish ,  South American , and  Caribbean  culinary traditions. On the Caribbean coast, you'll find dishes with Afro-Caribbean flair, usually featuring more meats, spices and coconut milk.

Capital city, San Jose, not only has an up-and-coming food scene but has established itself as the craft beer hub of Costa Rica. Enjoy seasonal samplings on a San Jose Bites and Sites tour with Urban Adventures

Look out for these favorite dishes and drinks across Costa Rica:

What to eat in Costa Rica

  • Gallo pinto Gallo pinto, the most common side dish in Costa Rica and across the Americas is served alongside meals morning, noon and night. It’s made of rice, beans, onions, peppers and spices, and the name translates to ‘speckled rooster’ because of the pops of color in the rice.
  • Casado If you eat at a ‘soda’ or a traditional Costa Rican restaurant, when traveling, chances are a casado will be on the menu. Although there are multiple variations of this tasting plate, you’ll likely get served up some gallo pinto, fried plantains and salad with either chicken, beef or fish, and freshly squeezed juice, covering all your food groups in one.
  • Chifrijo Chifrijo is a common bar snack in Costa Rica. The word is a combination of its two main ingredients – chicharrones (fried pork rinds) and frijoles (beans). The chicharrones and beans are layered together and topped with guacamole and pico de gallo and served with fresh tortilla or plantain chips for dipping.
  • Ceviche While ceviche is probably more often associated with Peru, the Tico version is a delicious variation. Made with raw fish cured in citrus juice, onions, coriander and peppers and served with tortilla chips or fried plantains, this dish is light, refreshing and a great start to a meal.
  • Patacones Patacones are deep-fried green plantains that are ideal for a snack or as a dipping device for chifrijo, guacamole or pico de gallo.
  • Sopa negra Sopa negra is a Costa Rican black bean soup, often flavoured with tomatoes and spices and served with egg and coriander.
  • Rondon Rondon is a seafood chowder that comes from Jamaica. Other Caribbean countries who’ve adopted the recipe have put their own spin on it with their choice of seafood – fish, crab, small lobster – as well as the coconut milk broth and spices.
  • Arroz con leche Sweet tooths can rejoice with this Central and South American dessert staple of arroz con leche – a spiced, sweet rice pudding made with cinnamon, cloves and raisins. Try it as a warming snack or a special dessert.
  • Pejibayes This unusual fruit comes from a type of palm known as the peach palm – the same tree that heart of palm comes from. After boiling for a few hours and discarding the inner seed and outer skin, the fruit is finished with a squeeze of lime or a dollop of mayonnaise to eat the local way. The taste has been likened to a mix between a squash, potato and cashew.

What to drink in Costa Rica

  • Coffee Costa Rica produces some of the best coffee in the world, so you’re set for your caffeine fix during your time in Costa Rica. It has both the ideal soil composition and the perfect elevation to grow the perfect coffee crop, so be sure to sample as many fresh local brews as you can.
  • Alcohol If you’re looking for drinks of the alcoholic variety, try guaro – a liquor made from sugar cane, best enjoyed in a guaro sour (with lime, simple syrup and soda). The craft beer scene is growing quickly here as well, so look for microbrews from a multitude of small local breweries. And if you’re wondering how to say cheers, just say ‘pura vida’ again!
  • Naturales Naturales – sometimes also called refrescos or batidos – are delicious fresh fruit juices blended with either milk or water. You can find them all over the country at small kiosks or booths in a variety of flavors like mango, pineapple and guanabana.

Geography and environment

Costa Rica is known for its incredible beaches and magical rainforests. But the backbone of this coastal nation is truly stunning mountain ranges, many of which contain both active and dormant volcanoes. You’ll also find heaps of waterfalls, lakes and rivers throughout the country. For this reason, adventure sports such as zip-lining, whitewater rafting and cycling are popular in inland destinations such as La Fortuna and Montverde, and adventure-packed activities are a popular way to experience the country.

Get active on an  8 day Costa Rica: Hike, Bike & Raft trip

Costa Rica’s diverse topography is home to many microclimates, and the temperature and weather can vary dramatically depending on elevation and how close you are to the coast. Rainforests, cloud forests, jungles and mountains exist side by side. The varied land and climate foster over 5% of the world’s total biodiversity.

Witness ecological diversity firsthand on a  10 day Best of Costa Rica trip   Costa Rica is home to over 500,000 species of plants and animals. Those seeking to  spot local wildlife  will be enthralled by Costa Rica’s unique flora and fauna. And the spectacular variety of wildlife isn’t limited to the land – scuba diving is another popular activity, with Costa Rica boasting some of the most beautiful bays, beaches and reefs in the world.

Four of the most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica

  • Tortuguero National Park One of Costa Rica’s best-kept secrets, this national park is the unspoiled paradise you’ve been searching for. Take a dip in Tortuguero’s warm turquoise waters or just relax on the idyllic shores
  • Manuel Antonio A true eco-playground, you can spend a day exploring misty rainforests and searching for sloths and monkeys before cooling off on one of the delightful beaches. Head into Quepos town for some good food and fiery nightlife after the sun sets.
  • Jaco Once a sleepy beach town, Jaco’s proximity to San Jose has made it a one-stop shop for those seeking big waves and even bigger parties. The gateway to national parks and  active adventures , there’s no denying Jaco’s uber-cool surf-town vibe.
  • Corcovado Well off the tourist trail, Corcovado isn’t your average beach experience. Boasting a diversity of colors, landscapes and wildlife, Corcovado is perfect for those seeking beaches with character and charm. Oh, and it’s got the largest primary forest in the American Pacific, if you needed another reason to visit.

Whether you’re buying souvenirs or groceries, your best bet in Costa Rica is to shop at local markets. Head to the Mercado Calle Nacional de Artesania y Pintura (National Craft Market) in San Jose for the best selection of handmade goods and souvenirs. Here you can stroll through dozens of stalls selling handmade hammocks and painted oxcarts as well as t-shirts and shot glasses that say ‘pura vida’. San Jose's Mercado Central is also a great place to grocery shop and pick up souvenirs, and vendors offer everything from fresh produce to coffee to leather goods.

You’ll often see carved wooden masks for sale but, while all of them are beautiful, for a truly authentic mask, you should aim to buy directly from indigenous communities who make them.

As in any destination, check that any souvenirs made from natural materials have been ethically sourced. Avoid buying products made from rainforest woods that were not sustainably harvested,  sea turtle  shells and other animal products. Before heading home, check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand, for example, have strict quarantine laws regarding some materials, such as food and wooden objects.

Festivals and events

Costa Ricans definitely know how to throw a party, and place a lot of importance on food, family and community. Many Costa Rican festivals celebrate the country’s farming and ranch heritage, and a lot have a Catholic element. No matter which festival you’re celebrating, you’re pretty much guaranteed a deep dive into Tico culture. Here are a few of the biggest festivals in Costa Rica:

Las Fiestas de Zapote

This festival, celebrated from Christmas until New Year’s Eve every year in the town of Zapote, is a week-long fiesta. It’s home to the biggest rodeo in Costa Rica, many carnival games, as well as rides and food stalls.

Palmares Fiestas

After the festivities of Christmas, New Year’s and the Zapote festival have wound down, it’s time for the Palmares festival. In mid-January, more than one million Ticos and tourists head to the town of Palmares for one of the largest festivals in Costa Rica. Revelers drink beer, enjoy food, listen to international acts and watch traditional bullfighting and the ‘tope’ – a horse parade through the streets.

Fiesta de los Diablitos

The ‘Festival of the Little Devils’ is celebrated twice each year (in December and February) in the indigenous communities of Boruca and Rey Curre. The festival celebrates the triumph of the original inhabitants over the Spanish conquistadors, with dancing and performances featuring costumes and painted masks.

Limon Carnival

If you’re traveling to Costa Rica in October, you’ll probably find yourself in the festive spirit as you touch down, as this is the month of Carnival. Notably, it’s when the Caribbean town of Puerto Limon celebrates this annual festival, with elaborate costumes, floats, parades and food stalls aplenty, spread across two weekends.

Costa Rica travel FAQs

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

When is the best time to visit Costa Rica?

Year-round tropical warmth means there really isn’t a bad time to visit Costa Rica. December to April are normally the driest months; however, Costa Rica’s diverse topography and blanket of rainforests suggest that you should be prepared for at least some rain any time of the year – a very small price to pay for such lush surroundings.

The good news is that even during the rainiest of seasons, the rainfall tends to be limited to a couple of hours a day – just enough time for you to enjoy a cup of Costa Rica's acclaimed coffee in one of its many cafes.

The most popular time to visit Costa Rica is between December and March – the driest and hottest months along the Pacific Coast. May to October brings the most rainfall across the country, but this is dependent on the region, as the wetter seasons are extended on the Osa Peninsula and northern sections of the Caribbean Coast.

Do you need a visa to travel to Costa Rica?

Generally, Costa Rica grants visas to most countries’ passport holders for a period of 90 days, providing travelers have a valid passport, a return or onward ticket and their trip is for leisure. Some countries’ citizens must apply for a visa before leaving their home country, but most do not.

Visas are the responsibility of the individual traveler. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information. Please visit the relevant consular website of the country or countries you’re visiting for detailed and up-to-date visa information specific to your nationality. Check the Essential Trip Information section of your tour itinerary for more information. This is for general information only and may be subject to change. It is your responsibility to obtain relevant visa and travel information required for entry, departure and travel to each country or region you visit on your trip. You should confirm these with the relevant embassies and/or consulates.

Is tipping customary in Costa Rica?

While tipping isn't mandatory in Costa Rica, rounding up the bill and leaving spare change at restaurants and cafes is standard practice. Many restaurants do add a service charge to the final bill which is usually a 10% gratuity; however, 500 colones (or around USD 1) of local currency is an appropriate extra amount.

What is the internet access like in Costa Rica?

Costa Rica's cities and tourist centers have wi-fi and internet access available in hotel lobbies and internet cafes. Internet access is less available in rural and remote areas.

Can I use my cell phone while in Costa Rica?

Cell phone coverage is generally good in Costa Rica's cities and metropolitan areas, although expect limited coverage in remote or mountainous areas. Ensure you have global roaming activated with your carrier if you wish to use your phone while in Costa Rica, but, be sure to check with your service provider first to find out about any fees you may incur, as sometimes this can be expensive.

Costa Rica has one state-owned phone provider – Kolbi – as well as a selection of private companies, should you wish to purchase a SIM while abroad. Depending on what connection and coverage you need during your stay in Costa Rica, a prepaid option with one of these providers may be the cheapest way to go.

What are the toilets like in Costa Rica?

Costa Rica's toilets are a mixture of flushable and squat toilets, so be prepared to encounter both. Carry your own supply of toilet paper and soap or hand sanitizer, as these aren't always provided.

  • Dinner in a restaurant = 5000-9000 CRC

Can I drink the water in Costa Rica?

Although tap water is considered safe to drink in Costa Rica's cities, it's probably a good idea to avoid drinking tap water in Costa Rica. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying small bottles of water. Ask your leader where filtered water can be found as some hotels provide this, so you’re able to use a reusable bottle. It's also advisable to avoid ice in drinks and to peel fruit and vegetables rather than eating washed or unwashed produce.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Costa Rica?

Major credit cards are accepted by most large shops, hotels, and restaurants, although smaller vendors and market stalls often only accept cash, so be sure to have a combination of both when traveling.

What is ATM access like in Costa Rica?

ATMs are easily found in large cities and airports, although are less common in rural and remote areas. When traveling out of the city, come prepared by having enough cash, as ATMs aren't always an option.

Is Costa Rica safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

Generally speaking, Costa Rica is a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers. Same-sex relationships are legal and, in 2015 Costa Rica became the first country in Central America to recognize gay relationships; however, recognition of same-sex marriage is currently pending government approval. In many places in Costa Rica, public displays of affection might attract unwanted attention, but there are a few places in Costa Rica with a thriving LBGTQI scene. Quepos has long been known as the LGBTQIA+ capital of Costa Rica, and the actual capital, San Jose, has a good number of gay bars and clubs.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting   Equaldex  or   ILGA   before you travel.

If you are traveling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travelers who do not wish to share a room.

What is the weather like in Costa Rica?

Being in the deep center of Central America, Costa Rica gets hot and oh so humid. However, there’s a whole number of microclimates inside its borders – that’s a fancy way of saying that the terrain is pretty hilly – so depending where you are in the country, the temperature may fluctuate. Generally speaking, Costa Rica enjoys a tropical climate year-round with temperatures averaging at 64°F minimum and 81°F maximum.

Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast has tropical heat almost all year round. March is the driest and hottest month, and May to October brings the wet season to the region. The Western Central Valley, including cities like San Jose, indirectly follow the Pacific Coast’s weather trends.

The Caribbean Coast has pretty steady rainfall all year round with no distinct dry season. September to October and February to March are considered the best months to travel to this side of the country as they are drier than most, but still experience rainfall. The Eastern Central Valley usually follows a similar weather pattern.

Is Costa Rica accessible for travellers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Much of Costa Rica’s travel highlights are based around the coast and in nature, so depending on travelers’ level of mobility, this may present obstacles. Many national parks are difficult to visit for travelers using a wheelchair, as jungle paths are mostly remote and not stable. Manuel Antonio does have wider paths and more accessible routes to venture into the rainforest, and the wide boardwalks and beaches are wheelchair friendly. The capital, San Jose, is a bit tricky to get around, with rough sidewalks and a lack of ramps. There are, however, taxi companies in the capital that offer wheelchair-accessible vans.

If you do live with a visual, hearing, or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you, and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

What to pack for a trip to Costa Rica

Packing for a trip to Costa Rica doesn't have to be difficult as long as you take into account the weather conditions you're likely to experience while you're over there. This means packing lightweight, comfortable clothing, walking shoes for exploring, appropriate sun protection items like sunscreen and hats, and a backpack so you can carry your camera and a reusable drink bottle.

What language is spoken in Costa Rica?

Spanish is the official language of Costa Rica, however, there are five indigenous languages that are still spoken throughout the country, as well as a mixture of English, Portuguese, German, and French spoken by a percentage of the population.

Best Gifts For Costa Ricans

T here are many reasons to travel to Costa Rica , but one of the best reasons is to meet and interact with Costa Ricans, often called ticos . Ticos are super laid-back ( unless they are driving or watching soccer), welcoming, and generous. The pura vida lifestyle reigns supreme here.

Whether reuniting with a host family from many years back, spending time with a driver or tour guide, wanting to spoil the maids and waiters at the resort, or volunteering, I’m often asked about the best gifts to take to Costa Rica to give to ticos.

In this post, I’ll break down some of the most common gift-giving occasions, and a few ideas for each occasion.

The key to taking a good gift is to know a bit about your audience. Don’t take a bag of socks to a wealthy family hosting you in the capital, for example.

Costa Ricans are as varied in income level as many Americans. Please don’t assume that everyone in Costa Rica is super poor. You can assume that your hosts will be very grateful for any gift you give.

Here’s a video of my convo with another Costa Rican expert on gift-giving in Costa Rica:

Gifts For Everyone

Coffee mugs.

Almost everyone who visits Costa Rica VERY soon realizes that coffee is a big deal. The ritual associated with the preparation and drinking of coffee is unique to the country, and ticos love to share the experience with visitors.

I often take along a Starbucks coffee mug from Denver or Colorado, to represent where we live. It’s a useful gift and a great conversation piece for long after you have left!

These mugs are sold at most stand-alone Starbucks locations, but sometimes you have to ask the barista for them as they keep them in back.

Check out this Traditional Costa Rican Coffee Recipe !

Most Costa Ricans love to enjoy a small drink ( trago) with friends, and this is one gift you can just get right at the Duty-Free shop when you land so you don’t have to pack anything extra.

Most popular drinks are Johnny Walker and Bailey’s Irish Cream. The local drinks are Ron Centenario and Cacique. There are tons of fun Costa Rican cocktails .

Now- ticos are not drunks, and not everyone drinks alcohol. So if you choose to bring this gift please be sensitive to how you present it. The host may not open the bottle in your presence either- this is not necessarily customary.

Nativity Scene

It is considered good luck to gift a Nativity scene to a family, and Nativities or pasitos as they are called in Costa Rica are displayed proudly in homes from November through February.

Learn more about Christmas In Costa Rica

Yeti and Kleen Kanteen ( especially this bottle ) are popular brands in Costa Rica right now, and I get huge compliments on my Corkcicle glasses when I am in Costa Rica.

It’s hard to keep drinks cold and so double-walled products are always a great bet. Plus they can be used for coffee and cold beverages- double score!

Gifts For Women

Lotions and perfumes.

Perfumes and scented lotions are very popular in Costa Rica, as well as hand sanitizers. When we visit our friends in Costa Rica, I will often take along various popular scents from Bath and Body Works or Victoria’s Secret and give them to the women who cook us amazing meals when we stop by their houses. They LOVE them!

Scented Candles

A great addition to any household!

Scarves and Handkerchiefs

It gets “cold” at night for ticas, and it is very fashionable to wear a scarf out and about. (This is probably not true in the beach areas.) It is also very in style to wear a silk handkerchief around one’s neck on special occasions.

Essential Oils

Essential oils and diffusers have become popular in Costa Rica just as they have in the US, and these are fun gifts! It’s relatively easy to get additional essential oils in Costa Rica to replenish too.

Gifts For Men

Lots of sun means men wear caps a lot in Costa Rica. Quiksilver , Billabong, and Under Armour are all popular, as well as any national sports team.

Portable Speakers

Music on the go is always fun, and the mini speakers are more expensive down there than in the US. This one looks awesome.

Mobile Phone Accessories

For some reason, these Columbia shirts are all the rage in Costa Rica for men. As are old Navy, Abercrombie and Gap t-shirts and sweatshirts.

Gifts For Children

Chocolate candies.

Several years ago when I was living in Costa Rica, I was in a dance troupe, and one of our fellow members spent some time in the U.S. When he returned, he brought to rehearsal all kinds of little Mars candy bars to share.

It wasn’t until that moment that I realized that American candy bars aren’t very common in Costa Rica. Now, I take them for all of the kids when we visit, and we parents get several moments of quiet to chat before the sugar high kicks in!

Paper is expensive in Costa Rica, especially school notebooks. Many students pick coffee or bag groceries in the summer in order to be able to afford their notebooks for school.

Because paper is a luxury, it is always fun to take along composition notebooks (the covers hold up well in the humidity), colored pens, crayons, and stickers for the kids to create with, and for the older teens to use at school. Cartoon character covers are especially popular! These look especially cute.

Coloring Books

Coloring and activity books are so cheap and abundant here, and in Costa Rica, they just- aren’t. This bundle for boys is great , and there’s a girl’s bundle too .

I am a huge puzzle fanatic, and I can rarely find puzzles in Costa Rica. This is a fun present for everyone! This puzzle looks perfect.

This is my most requested item when I ask people what I can bring them from the States. I am obsessed with these new little Lego sets.

Gifts For Teachers

Teachers in Costa Rica are middle class- they earn a great living and can, for the most part, purchase the things that they want and need. The only difference is that there are high tariffs (taxes) on imports to Costa Rica, so anything not fabricated in Costa Rica is going to be a much higher price than in the States.

My favorite idea is this laptop bag with pencil case.

Gifts For Service Projects

If you are heading to Costa Rica for missions or service trips, you might be interacting with lower-income ticos. You may or may not feel comfortable giving more extravagant gifts to those living in poverty. There are still several special and important gifts that you can give that are useful for lower-income ticos.

For some odd reason, socks are very expensive in Costa Rica- more expensive than in the U.S. (A painful realization for me after my suitcase got stolen out of a rental car and I was left with only the clothes on my back.)

I will often take packs of nice athletic socks for the people I am serving. Socks are great because they are useful, and pretty much one-size-fits-all (not always as easy to take along shirts or pants if you don’t know the sizes of the people you will work with.)

Small Kitchen Appliances

Kitchen appliances are so much more expensive in Costa Rica, and they are a vital tool for low-income families who don’t eat out very often. The electric current in Costa Rica is the same as US, so you don’t need to worry about an electrical converter. Here are a few of the most requested items for the kitchen:

  • Rice cooker – this is my absolute favorite
  • Coffee pot – this one is easy to pack, and we have had ours for 15 years with no problems.
  • Blender – this one is a perfect option
  • Cutting boards – plastic is best due to climate

Personal items

Shampoo, deodorant, lotions, razors, toothbrushes, and toothpaste.

The post Best Gifts For Costa Ricans appeared first on Pura Vida Moms .

There are many reasons to travel to Costa Rica, but one of the best reasons is to meet and interact with Costa Ricans, often called ticos. Ticos are super laid-back (unless they are driving or watching soccer), welcoming, and generous. The pura vida lifestyle reigns supreme here. Whether reuniting with a host family from many...

Costa Rica Surf and Service

Summer surf camp overview.

This teen surf camp combines fun surfing lessons (for all skill levels) with meaningful community service for an incredible Costa Rican experience! We will learn to surf at one of the best beaches in the country, Playa Sámara, known for its gentle waves for beginners and fun easy riding for those who already are comfortable on a surfboard. Keep an eye out for the wild horses that roam the beach here!

Our certified surf instructors will teach you everything you need to know to be safe and have fun in the water. After several days of lessons at Playa Sámara we will take our surfing skills to Playa Grande for some of the best beach breaks on the Pacific Coast. Here, we will enjoy additional surfing lessons to perfect our surfing skills.

We’ll also spend time with local school children and help to improve their community facilities. Projects vary but our service work typically consists of working on art projects with the children, reading to them, teaching them English, and general upkeep of the school such as painting and light maintenance.

Surfing and service aren’t all we’ll do. We will also take cooking and dance lessons, zipline, hike, go on a mangrove animal safari, snorkel and enjoy Costa Rican pura vida !

Trip Itinerary

Day 1: depart from miami (mia), days 1-6: playa sámara.

Playa Sámara is our home for the first six days of the trip. During our stay in Sámara, we will spend our time with local students getting our hands dirty working on important projects at a community center. Past projects have included painting school buildings, renovating a soccer field, planting trees, and cleaning up and renovating the town park. From our rustic yet comfortable lodgings at a farmhouse, we’ll get to know both the animals and the family that cares for them.

We will also begin our surf lessons! The waves in Sámara are perfect and gentle enough for beginners, yet still fun for more advanced surfers. Other activities will include zip-lining through the jungle canopy, sea kayaking and eco-hikes to nearby hidden beaches!

DAYS 7-10: PLAYA GRANDE > TAMARINDO

The Playa Grande is where we learn the true meaning of pura vida . Here on the Pacific coast, we will take our surf lessons up a notch and start to perfect our skills. We’ll also learn about local Tico culture, cooking up local specialties, learning traditional dances, and paddling with a nature guide through a coastal mangrove forest.

"Zoe had a wonderful time in Costa Rica. She enjoyed the activities, especially sharing this journey with her long time friend. Zoe has made lifelong friends with her fellow 2023 CR teen travelers. There was a perfect balance of activities vs free time. She enjoyed the flexibility of the suggested schedule. As a parent, I believe the CR staff did an AMAZING job with daily photos and recap. Even if I didn’t get a chance to connect with my teen each day, the trip leaders ALWAYS posted photos, emailed a recap and provided the next days agenda." Alison Jacksonville, FL
"Amaya went to Costa Rica with another program two years ago and I can honestly say TFT is crushing the competition! From the time Amaya arrived (traveling alone) to the accommodations, caliber of staff, and activities, we were very impressed! TFT has provided far more activities than the competition and has far better communication with parents! I absolutely love the daily updates and photos! Not only is it informative and personal, but it gives me my own little escape from the monotony of my work world!" Melissa Taylorsville, MS
"We can't tell you enough how much Lucy (and Katie) enjoyed the trip. Lucy came back with such an appreciation for Costa Rica and for you and the other TFT team members. She said you were one of the most amazing persons that she has ever met. We want to thank you whole-heartedly for giving the kids such a wonderful experience! Wishing you all the best!" Frequently Asked Questions

What is unique about the Costa Rica Surf & Service trip?

Costa Rica Surf & Service uniquely integrates exhilarating adventures while also incorporating community service projects! Our strong ties to the community in Sámara guarantees an authentic experience. Students will be immediately welcomed into the community and treated like family. The aspect of combining surf lessons with community service in Costa Rica makes for a dynamic experience!

Who can go on this trip? What kind of teen typically goes on this trip?

Teens from all over the world join this program! Typically, our participants are culturally curious individuals who are excited to make new friends, experience something unique, and interested in stepping out of their comfort zones and expanding their horizons.

This program is exclusively for students who are currently in grades 9th through 12th and approximately 14 to 18 years old. Students living outside of the USA are welcome to join!

What do students like most about the Costa Rica Surf & Service trip?

Our surf-loving participants truly enjoy the layout of our trip! Costa Rica Surf & Service gives our participants the opportunity to explore Costa Rica’s hidden treasures while also being able to give back to the community. Our participants leave the program feeling like they accomplished new skills and made a difference. ¡Pura Vida!

Where do we stay?

Our hotels are specifically chosen to be in safe areas and well-suited to facilitating group supervision. We stay in centrally located accommodations, usually within walking distance of the main attractions. This means we do not use large, impersonal chain hotels on the outskirts of cities. We prefer to select smaller, family-run hotels where we establish personal relationships with the owners.

In Sámara we stay in a hotel right by the beach surrounded by trees where you can see monkeys, iguanas and toucans hanging around. Our hotel in Playa Grande is very similar.

For safety reasons, we do not publish the names of the accommodations we use. We do not feel it is safe to publish the name of a hotel where a group of teenagers is staying abroad. After registering, participants and parents are given access to our secure parent website where you will be able to see the names of all of the accommodations for a program.

Do most travelers go on their own?

Yes! In fact, over 75% of students who travel with us choose to come independently. This encourages teens to step further outside their comfort zone and make new friends. We believe that one of the most rewarding and exciting elements of travel is the new friendships that form along the way. When we travel by ourselves, we are bound to make new friends from all over the country and even the world. The best part is, you can travel again with your new friends on another TFT program the next summer!

If you are thinking about joining a TFT program by yourself but you are feeling unsure, please let us know! We have plenty of references from solo travelers who had great experiences and would be happy to chat with you about it.

Can I bring a friend?

Absolutely! We ask that if you do come with a friend, you and your friend(s) maintain openness to meeting new people and sharing this special experience with the entire group.

What is included?

Tuition cost includes ground transportation; accommodation; chaperones and guides; program-related activities and admissions; taxes and tips; all breakfasts, lunches, and dinners.

Not included in cost (this is not intended to be an exhaustive list) : airfare; visas and visa application fees; personal and medical expenses; activities and admissions that are not program-related or referenced in the itinerary; beverages other than filtered water at meals; participant expenses that are outside of the program description, such as excess baggage fees and damage to hotels; expenses related to unforeseen circumstances, such as transportation strikes and natural disasters.

How do the optional group flights work?

Upon registration, you will be contacted by our International Logistics Team to discuss the program’s flight details. There is no requirement to take the group flight, but there are several advantages to doing so. The group flight is usually chaperoned by a TFT staff member, and it also offers an opportunity for the students to get to know one another prior to the start of the program. Parents are responsible for coordinating transport to the departure airport – however, the logistics team will send out instructions detailing the exact meeting spot and airport point person. For additional information about flights, visit our dedicated flight page.

Who leads the program?

Our staff is a cut above the rest! We seek out two main characteristics in our counselors – extensive knowledge of and experience in our destinations, and a passion for working with teens. Our staff’s backgrounds include living abroad and working in summer camps or other educational settings. Team members are proven leaders and role models, who connect easily with others and form genuine friendships with each student – all while bringing each destination to life.

We celebrate diversity! Our staff represents 49 different nationalities, speak a combined total of 21 languages, and visited 142 countries. Additionally, 80% of our staff lived or worked abroad in their lives. With so many unique experiences to share, you are sure to gain a global perspective.

Our average minimum ratios are one staff member to every seven participants. Each program has one Trip Director with several support staff, depending on the group size. Directors must be at least 25 years old within the calendar year and have prior experience working with TFT.

What are the safety qualifications for our staff?

Our staff members undergo a rigorous hiring process. They receive the same background check as school educators, an extensive training process to go over all safety precautions and protocols, and are required to be certified in CPR and First Aid.  We exclusively hire responsible, multi-talented individuals who are safety-minded and are as passionate about teen travel as we are.

What is the average group size?

We pride ourselves on small group sizes to create a more authentic and personalized experience. Our group sizes fall between 13 and 24 students – the perfect size to facilitate new friendships without feeling lost in a crowd! We believe smaller groups eliminate the likelihood of cliques, and allows for a well-rounded, healthy group dynamic.

How does this program connect to other programs?

Our program dates are designed specifically so that participants can opt to combine trips throughout the summer.  When connecting to another program, your counselor will escort you to the airport on the last day of the program and assist you in meeting your next group at your new destination.

What is the food like on this program?

In a word – delicious! At TFT, we believe food is an integral aspect of the travel experience, and we make an effort to eat at authentic establishments whenever possible. There is no better way to immerse ourselves in the culture of a place then through sampling the local delicacies. We stray away from westernized restaurants and chains that cater to tourists, because every true traveler knows the best food is found where the locals are eating!

The food in Costa Rica is delicious! Expect to eat seasoned rice, beans, chicken, steak, tropical fruit and veggies, plantains, and many other foods flavored with unique Caribbean spices! Vegetarians will have no issues eating well on the trip. Also, unlike in Europe where a light breakfast of coffee and toast is the norm, ticos (Costa Ricans) eat big, savory breakfasts—and so will we!

Of course, we are always willing and able to accommodate vegetarians, vegans, gluten allergies, and other dietary restrictions.

Do I need any vaccinations for this program?

We recommend checking with your family doctor regarding vaccinations and medical advice for the destination you are visiting. For more information, please check the World Health Organization’s website . Upon registration, we provide a list of recommended vaccinations that can be discussed further with your doctor. For Specific questions pertaining to the COVID-19 vaccine, click here .

Do I need to know how to surf already to go on this trip?

Students do not need to have any experience surfing to participate. Students who already have a comfort level or previous experience surfing routinely do this program to improve their skills while other participants are there to give it a try for the first time.

Do we ever get time to go off on our own?

Our staff and teens are nearly always together, but we do provide the opportunity to break up into smaller groups to allow for flexibility and customization within the itinerary.

We offer free time in defined safe areas – for example, shopping in a market or exploring a museum. During these times, students remain in groups of at least two and are given no more than an hour. Of course, the counselors remain nearby and available. Additionally, a lifeguard-certified counselor supervises the campers any time they are involved in water activities.

What kind of visa do you need for this trip?

All US citizens that enter Costa Rica are automatically granted a free 90-day tourist visa.

When joining a TFT trip from outside of the US, please be sure to check your country’s specific visa requirements.

Do I need to speak the language?

No, our skilled staff members will help you get around and even teach you a few fun phrases!
