Mark your calendars, travel junkies. The 31st Travel Tour Expo (TTE) and the 9th International Travel Trade Expo will be coming back this February to address all your revenge travel needs.

With the theme “World within reach,” this year's expo will take place from Feb. 2 to 4 at the SMX Convention Center Manila in Pasay City. The annual event organized by the Philippine Travel Agencies Association (PTAA) will once again showcase the latest travel destinations, with travel deals and exclusive discounts up for grabs.

Here’s what you need to know about the upcoming event.

Over 200 local and international exhibitors

More than 200 exhibitors and 702 booths are expected to participate in the travel expo. There will be booths from airlines, domestic, and international travel agencies, tour operators, hotels and resorts, cruise liners and shipping companies, and more. The event expects a turnout of 100,000 travel enthusiasts.

According to PTAA, there will be at least 68 sellers and 220 registered buyers coming from Australia, Balkan, China, Dubai, Egypt, France, Greece, India, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Malaysia, Morocco, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, Taiwan, Turkey, UAE, the US, and Vietnam. 

Early access for cardholders

E vent gates of the SMX Convention Center at the Mall of Asia Complex will open at 10:00 a.m. on the first day, and 9:30 a.m. on the second day. However, Unionbank cardholders will get early access and may avail of special rates from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on Feb. 2.

Four halls will be occupied on the second floor of the SMX Convention Center for travel boards, agents, and businesses. All the halls will be open to the public on Feb. 2 and 3. 

Packages and promos to the hottest destinations

Travel enthusiats can expect a diverse range of travel packages, accommodations, flights, exclusive discounts, and other travel-related services. The expo will offer packages and promos for new destinations, affordable tours, transportation, and accommodations, with various payment options to cater to every type of traveler. 

According to PTTA, among the top destinations for local and foreign tourists within the Philippines are Palawan, Boracay, and Bohol, with Batanes emerging as a rising destination. 

Korea and Japan top the list of international destinations that Filipinos want to travel to along with Hong Kong, Thailand, and Singapore for first-time local travelers. Meanwhile, high-end travelers often opt for European destinations.

Human connection from travel agencies

While booking trips via digital platforms has made travel more convenient, the travel expo will give attendees a chance to speak to travel agents who can provide personalized service and explain travel deals and packages more thoroughly. 

Travel agents can provide a “human connection” and expertise to answer questions on specific destinations, misconnections, missing luggage, and insurance, among others.

In a press conference in Makati on Jan. 18, PTAA noted the rise of new travel trends such as gig tripping where fans travel to foreign countries to watch concerts; and set-jetting , which involves traveling to destinations featured as film locations in popular movies and television shows, which travel agencies can customize packages around.

Domestic and international flight deals

Travel enthusiasts can browse around and book flights from at least 19 airlines flying to different local and international destinations. Airlines include flag carriers and budget airlines of top destinations like South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, and Vietnam, as well as Australia, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.

E ntrance tickets to the PTAA Travel Expo will cost P85 for general admission while senior citizens get a discounted rate of P65.

Organised by the Philippine Travel Agencies Association (PTAA), the TTE 2024 will spotlight how the Philippine tourism and hospitality industries have levelled up to make domestic and international trips for Filipinos more worthwhile through exclusive deals and packages on air fares, tours, and accommodations.

TTE 2024 will host more than 200 participating exhibitors with 702 booths, and anticipates a turnout of 100,000 travel enthusiasts. Booths will include airlines, domestic and international travel agencies and tour operators, hotels and resorts, cruise liners and shipping, merchandisers and more. It will also serve as the launchpad for new destinations, affordable tours, transportation choices, tailor-fit accommodations, and various payment options to cater to every voyager.

“Many travellers are eager to make up for lost time. Revenge travel has undeniably played a role in the resurgence of tourism – more importantly, people have realised that life is short. This renewed eagerness to travel, to live life and experience other places and cultures is definitely long-term,” remarked PTAA president Evangeline Tankiang-Manotok.

While digital platforms have made travel more accessible, convenient and personalised, TTE 2024 chairperson Patria Chiong said that “travel agencies offer people-to-people connection” and offer ever-ready assistance “in case of misconnections, missing luggage, insurance”.

The biggest Philippine travel expo, the Travel Tour Expo (TTE) 2024, opened its doors to the public on Friday, offering a wide range of travel offers, including discounts on tours to both popular and lesser-known places across the country. The promotional tours to the Spratlys, targeted at leisure travelers, are a prominent component of this three-day event. The Spratly tours, which started in March 2023 with journalists as the first guests, have since drawn domestic and international tourists, especially those interested in sport fishing and scuba diving, according to Ken Hupanda, the tourism officer for Kalayaan municipality and exhibitor at the expo. By saying, "We've already welcomed international visitors," Hupanda emphasized the trips' success. Near Palawan's largest island, Pag-asa, one group of local tourists set a new record for fishing with a 74-kilogram tuna. Roughly 80 people have taken advantage of these tours since they began in March, with prices ranging from PHP40,500 to PHP150,000. With its liveaboard accommodations, Pag-asa Island lodging, and a weeklong tour of Pag-asa, Lawak, Patag, and Likas Islands in the West Philippine Sea, the Kalayaan Fish and Dive Expedition stands out as the most premium package. More than 50% of the available spots on four leisure trips to the Spratlys have already been filled for 2024.  

With over 200 exhibitors and an anticipated 100,000 attendees, the Philippine Travel Agencies Association (PTAA) TTE offers substantial savings on overseas vacation packages and visa services. Travel companies, airlines, hotels, cruise lines, and more will be present at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay from February 2 to 4, during the exhibition. Evangeline Tankiang-Manotok, president of the Philippine Travel Association (PTAA), commented on the spike in interest in travel after the pandemic, saying that people want to make up for lost time and are more aware of how short life is.

At the opening, Christina Frasco, the secretary of tourism, reaffirmed the department's aim to attract more than 7 million visitors by the end of 2024 and expressed her support for PTAA's initiatives to reinvigorate national tourism. "The responsibility to sustain tourism growth lies with us, and we aim to guide the industry towards new opportunities, making 2023 a year of innovation and setting high hopes for 2024 to exceed our achievements," according to her.

The first year of Travel Madness in 2012 was a big, phenomenal hit, generating at least 40,000 visitors and guests, and enabling an international credit card company to rake in PHP20 million worth of business in just three days.

TME is one of the biggest travel and trade fairs in the Philippines. It is supported by local and national tourism organizations, travel authorities, airlines, cruise lines, hotels, travel agencies, theme parks, insurance companies, schools, real property companies, and other business establishments in the retail and food industries.

TME’s successful display of destinations and cultures from around the world has made it a must-see event for travel enthusiasts.

The most recent edition, Travel Madness Expo 2023 (TME 2023),  was held from June 30 – July 2, 2023, at Halls 1-4, Ground Floor, SMX Convention Center – Manila, MOA Compound, Pasay City. It was the 10th edition organized by Travel Innovators, Inc with the theme, “Travel: We’re back in full color.”

TME 2023 was the first face-to-face edition after the COVID-19 outbreak which struck the world in the first quarter of 2020. The 9th edition was cancelled in 2020 and was replaced by an online TME in 2022.

It seemed like a daunting task to start anew. However, with all the sacrifices each one of us in the travel and trade industry has made in the past years, saying that a pot of gold is waiting for us at the end of the rainbow might be inapt. Beyond the outbreaks are breakthroughs in the field that we all know is ever evolving, but it is the one place we find ourselves coming back to. Thus, TME 2023 was bravely staged.

Moving forward, we found ourselves simply having that passion to make things better for everyone. TME 2024 now brings you, a magical experience with the combination of travel, technology, and wonderful dreams.

Sabre Philippines Supports Travel Tour Expo 2024

Sabre Philippines supported the recently concluded Travel Tour Expo 2024 organized by the Philippines Travel Agencies Association (PTAA) at the SMX Convention Center Manila from 2 to 4 February 2024.  The event saw participation from major airlines, travel agencies and other travel suppliers. Sabre Philippines provided support to a hundred travel agency subscribers by deploying our Sabre Red 360 Point-of-sale solution and equipment needed for the 3-day event. Airlines also supported the event by loading special fares onto the Sabre GDS system.

The Philippines’ participation in Asia Dive Expo (ADEX) Singapore, known as Asia’s largest and longest-running dive expo, generated P197.2 million in combined negotiated sales leads and actual bookings during a three-day business-to-consumer session.

This marked a more than 300-percent increase from last year’s negotiated sales leads.

The Philippines was also named the Sustainable Dive Destination of the Year in recognition of its commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable practices in dive tourism.

“This recognition, alongside our long list of accolades celebrating the beauty of our nation, underscores our steadfast commitment to sustainable tourism practices,” said Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) chief operating officer Maria Margarita Montemayor Nograles.

“Participation in trade fairs like ADEX provides us a platform to promote the Philippines’ diverse tourism products and experiences. Moving forward, we will continue to work hand in hand with local communities and dive operators to ensure sustainable practices are followed so that our country’s treasures will still be enjoyed by future generations in the years to come,” Nograles said.

The Philippine pavilion utilized a 90-square-meter booth space to feature some of the country’s finest dive sites such as the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park in Palawan, the famed sardine run of Moalboal in Cebu and the marine and natural park of Apo Reef in Mindoro.

The Philippine delegation, led by the TPB, was composed of 16 exhibitors from the dive industry, accommodation and tour operators.

SINGAPORE (The Straits Times/ANN): Some 16.5 million passengers passed through Changi Airport in the first quarter of 2024, surpassing pre-Covid-19 levels on a quarterly basis for the first time, as China became the airport’s top market for the quarter.

This was a 0.5 per cent increase from what the airport handled in the first quarter of 2019, airport operator Changi Airport Group (CAG) said in a statement on April 25.

The airport handled 5.43 million passenger movements in January 2024 (96 per cent of the levels seen in January 2019), 5.35 million movements in February 2024 (104.3 per cent of that seen in February 2019), and 5.73 million movements in March 2024 (101.7 per cent of that registered in March 2019).

In the first quarter of 2023, 13 million passengers passed through the airport.

Changi Airport’s top five markets for the first quarter of 2024 were China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Australia and Thailand. In 2023, these were Indonesia, Malaysia, Australia, Thailand and India, with China in sixth place.

CAG said the roll-out on Feb 9 of a mutual 30-day visa-exemption arrangement between Singapore and China boosted travel between both countries, propelling China to the top spot for the quarter.

For the first three months of 2024, Denpasar (Bali), Manila, Taipei, Seoul and Shanghai were among the top 10 cities that outperformed the first quarter of 2019 by more than 10 per cent.

For the quarter, 89,400 flights departed or arrived at the airport – 94 per cent of the movements in the first quarter of 2019.

In comparison, there were 74,200 aircraft movements in the same quarter a year ago.

Between January and March, traffic to and from most regions recovered to or surpassed 2019 levels, with North America emerging as the strongest performer, with traffic exceeding pre-pandemic levels by 25 per cent for the quarter.

From January to March, airfreight throughput, or air cargo movements, totalled 475,000 tonnes, up 14 per cent from the same period in 2023, marking the first quarter of year-on-year growth after seven straight quarters of decline.

This was due largely to strong transshipment performance, especially for air cargo flows with China.

Speaking at the annual Changi Airline Awards on April 25 at The Fullerton Hotel Singapore, Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat said Changi’s passenger traffic in the first quarter of 2024 was a significant milestone for Singapore’s aviation industry.

“We look forward to the continued growth of passenger traffic at Changi, and will work towards our goal of exceeding pre-Covid passenger traffic levels for the full year.

“We have seen through the worst of the pandemic and emerged stronger together,” he said at the award ceremony, which honoured the airport’s airline partners for their contribution to Changi Airport’s growth as a global air hub.

Mr Chee outlined several areas to position Changi Airport for future growth, reiterating that construction on the upcoming Terminal 5 is on track to begin in 2025.

The terminal is set to be operational in the mid-2030s.

Aviation workers, he said, will also need to pick up new and relevant skills, and jobs may be redesigned, as the airport taps technology such as automation and assistive tools to augment the human workforce and raise productivity of labour-intensive roles.

Speaking at the ceremony, CAG chief executive Lee Seow Hiang said a shortage of manpower will be a major challenge for Changi Airport in the mid to long term.

“We have done deep automation in the last few years, and we are now on the cusp of a new phase with the impending launch of document-free travel by the end of this year.

“Using your biometrics... as the key to identity verification, we can reduce the need for passengers to repeatedly present travel documents... at many touchpoints,” he said.

The improvement will be transformational, Mr Lee said.

“By challenging the conventional norms in our business, we hope to take a step closer to our vision of an airport of the future well before T5 opens,” he added.

Mr Lee also gave more details about a planned new hotel at Terminal 2, the third landside hotel at the airport. Landside refers to areas of the airport that are before immigration clearance and accessible to the public.

He said the hotel – billed as Singapore’s first zero-energy hotel – will be ready in 2028 and have more than 250 rooms, and will be positioned to appeal to the younger set. It will be directly accessible from the terminal’s departure hall via a linkway.

Mr Chee thanked Mr Lee, who will step down on July 1 after 15 years at the helm of CAG, for spearheading Changi Airport’s growth and development.

“Seow Hiang’s vision and steadfast leadership has transformed Changi into a leading global air hub, and taken the airport through the darkest days of Covid-19, and seen through Changi’s recovery after the pandemic,” he said.

Mr Yam Kum Weng, CAG’s executive vice-president for airport development, who has been leading the Changi East project, where T5 will be sited, will succeed Mr Lee.

Mr Lee declined comment when asked by The Straits Times about his post-CAG plans, at the award ceremony.

At the event, CAG named Shanghai-based China Eastern Airlines its partner of the year for the carrier’s significant efforts in expanding Changi Airport’s connectivity to China.

The 2023 winner for this category was Singapore Airlines, for its role in driving Changi Airport’s passenger traffic recovery in 2022 as the world rebounded from the Covid-19 pandemic.

In 2023, China Eastern Airlines launched four new links, including a new route from Beijing Daxing International Airport, making Changi Airport its first South-east Asia point. The other new direct links for the airline are to Hefei, Nanjing and Hangzhou.

With the increased services, China Eastern Airlines operated a total of 52 weekly services between Singapore and China as at December 2023. - The Straits Times/ANN

MANILA: In a bid to boost the capabilities of the Philippines’ military, Russia said on Wednesday that it will supply the country’s armed forces with brand new, state-of-the-art weapons and equipment. The move follows a reaffirmation by both countries to strengthen defense cooperation in order to contribute toward lasting peace and stability in the region.

Recently, Khovaev and the head of Russia’s state arms exporter, Alexander Mikheyev, met with the Philippines’ president, Rodrigo Duterte, in Malacañang where they discussed prospects for defense cooperation, especially in combating religious extremism.

“Russia suffered a lot from terrorism. So we know very well what it means. We have a lot of experience and we are ready to share our experience with our partners and friends,” Khovaev said. “We are ready to use all ways and means in order to strengthen military defense ties between our two countries. “It is in the strategic national interest of both Russians and Filipinos.”

HIGHLIGHT It marks the first time in more than 40 years of Philippines and Russian bilateral relations that Moscow has designated a resident defense attaché to Manila, and follows the deployment of Manila’s first defense attaché to Russia in May last year.

During the reception, Khovaev introduced Col. Dmitry Kitin, the first Russian defense attaché to the Philippines.

It marks the first time in more than 40 years of Philippines and Russian bilateral relations that Moscow has designated a resident defense attaché to Manila, and follows the deployment of Manila’s first defense attaché to Russia in May last year.

“It was a very meaningful event because it opens up new horizons for bilateral cooperation, particularly in the most sensitive field of defense and national security,” Khovaev said.

“Russia is extending the hand of help to our Philippine partners in mutual defense and security. So it really shows that we are ready to become a reliable partner and close friend for Filipinos,” he added.

“We are now living in a world where all of us depend on each other. No country, big or small, is able to ensure its security and defense on its own simply because the current challenges and threats are transboundary.”

Philippines Defense Undersecretary Raymundo Elefante welcomed the development saying that he is optimistic about stronger military ties between the Manila and Moscow.

“It will be a long journey but I think this relationship will be a very good opportunity,” he said.
