Overboard cruise passenger spent hours in Gulf of Mexico before he was rescued

A man who went overboard during a holiday cruise in the Gulf of Mexico was rescued after several hours in the water off New Orleans, authorities said Friday.

The 28-year-old, who was not publicly identified, may have been in the water for at least six hours when he was plucked from the sea Thursday. He was rescued about 20 miles south of Louisiana's Southwest Pass, where the Mississippi River meets the coast, U.S. Coast Guard officials said.

The man's survival was hailed as unlikely and possibly miraculous given the time he may have been in the water. Coast Guard Petty Officer Ryan Graves said the man did not have a flotation device, and survival at sea without one is unlikely.

"It makes it more miraculous that we were able to find him conscious and treading water," Graves said.

The cruise ship passenger man was last seen on board the Mexico-bound Carnival Valor about 11 p.m. Wednesday, Graves said.

Coast Guard rescue crews pulled the man to safety six hours after receiving a 2:30 p.m. Thursday report of a passenger overboard, Graves said.

It's not clear how or when the man went overboard. Carnival Cruise Lines said in a statement that an accidental fall into the water would be rare and physically challenging.

"Cruise ships have safety barriers in all public areas that are regulated by U.S. Coast Guard standards that prevent a guest from falling off," it said Friday. "Guests should never ever climb up on the rails. The only way to go overboard is to purposefully climb up and over the safety barriers."

Night video from Coast Guard aircraft appears to show the man struggling in relatively calm but active seas, where his head dipped below the surface with every wave. The agency said in a statement the passenger was "responsive" when the crew on board a MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter reached him.

Surface temperatures in the gulf are roughly 70 degrees, Gross said. Data from coastal monitors, buoys and oil platforms collected by federal forecasters and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography measured water temperatures Friday from 63 degrees near the shore at Southwest Pass, to 70 and higher at sea.

Graves noted that in early October even some of the warmest seasonal waters challenged three men who spent 28 hours at sea, 25 miles off the Louisiana coast, after the boat they were using capsized in rough seas.

The water was warm, he said, but the the trio was beset by signs of hypothermia when they were rescued by Coast Guard crews Oct. 9.

The average October sea temperature near shore at Mobile State Docks, Alabama, is nearly 77 ; it was slightly higher than 62 there Friday, according to the National Centers for Environmental Information.

Experts have suggested survival in water 60 degrees or cooler is not likely after six hours, but warmer water can extend chances of making it. Cold shock, swimming failure, and hypothermia can open the pathways to death, including drowning and cardiac arrest.

Cruise passenger who fell overboard rescued in ‘Thanksgiving miracle’

US coast guard located man about 20 miles south of Southwest Pass, Louisiana, after he fell overboard the Carnival Valor ship

In what some officials were hailing as a “Thanksgiving miracle” a passenger was rescued from the waters of the Gulf of Mexico on Thursday evening after falling overboard from a cruise ship, the US coast guard (USCG) announced.

At 8.25pm on Thursday, the coast guard located a 28-year-old man in the sea about 20 miles south of Southwest Pass, Louisiana , after he apparently fell overboard the New Orleans-to-Mexico Carnival Valor cruise ship on Wednesday evening.

In a statement to CNN, Carnival officials said the man was reported missing on Thanksgiving Day after he walked away from his sister at an onboard bar the night before at 11pm – likely to use the bathroom.

He never returned, prompting his sister to alert staff members the next day. CNN reports that numerous announcements were made throughout the ship for the man to check in with guest service, but to no avail.

At around 2.30pm on Thursday, the cruise ship alerted the coast guard about the missing passenger.

“Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a call from the Carnival Valor at approximately 2.30pm Thursday, reporting a passenger aboard the cruise ship was missing. Watchstanders then coordinated the launch of several rescue crews to begin searching,” the coast guard said in a statement .

The rescue crews included a boat from Venice, Florida, a New Orleans-based helicopter, as well as airplanes from Clearwater, Florida and Mobile, Alabama, Lt Seth Gross, a USCG search and rescue coordinator told CNN.

The 200-plus-mile search was made complicated by the time difference between when the passenger was last seen and when the Coast Guard was alerted. “We knew that communication with the mariners in the Gulf of Mexico was going to be critical, Gross said.

Six hours later, crew members from the vessel Crinis discovered “a person in the water”, the USCG said.

The person turned out to be the missing passenger.

Aircrew from the coast guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter promptly “vectored into the area … hoisted the man on to the helicopter and transferred him to awaiting emergency medical services at the New Orleans Lakefront airport”, said the USCG.

“He was able to identify his name, confirmed that he was the individual that fell overboard,” Gross told CNN. “He was showing signs of hypothermia, shock, dehydration” but was reported to be in stable condition by the coast guard late Friday morning.

“The fact that he was able to keep himself afloat and above the surface of the water for such an extended period of time, it’s just something you can’t take for granted and certainly something that’ll stick with me forever,” Gross said, adding that the water temperature on Thursday night in the gulf was just slightly above 70F (21C).

Gross added: “The will to live is something you have to account for in every search and rescue case. This is one of the absolutely longest [times in the water] I’ve heard about and one of those Thanksgiving miracles.”

A cruise ship passenger had been missing for hours before he was rescued from sea waters by the U.S. Coast Guard off of Louisiana's southeast coast on Thursday evening.

The passenger, who officials identified as a 28-year old man, was found about 20 miles south of Southwest Pass, La., after he'd fallen overboard from a Carnival Valor cruise ship on Wednesday evening, the Coast Guard said in a press release.

However, cruise ship officials did not contact the Coast Guard New Orleans Sector to report the missing passenger until 2:30 p.m. local time on Thursday. Hours later, aircrew members of the Coast Guard rescued the passenger at 8:25 p.m. It was a crew aboard the bulk carrier vessel Crinis that had alerted Coast Guard members to the man's location after spotting a person in the water.

In footage released by the Coast Guard, the passenger is lifted from the dark waters and onto a helicopter operated by an aircrew. He was then transported to the New Orleans Lakefront Airport to receive emergency medical attention. The passenger was in stable condition as of Friday.

Rescued cruise passenger who went overboard was seconds from death, Coast Guard officer says

By Caitlin Yilek , Rebecca Reingold

Updated on: November 29, 2022 / 7:50 PM EST / CBS News

The Carnival cruise ship passenger who went overboard last Wednesday was near death when he was rescued, according to one of the U.S. Coast Guard officers who saved him.

Aviation survival technician Richard Hoefle told CBS News he believes "the survivor had about 30 seconds to a minute left before we would have lost him."

The 28-year-old man had "an incredible will to survive," Hoefle said.

"He fell off a boat, he didn't have flotation, he didn't have radio or flares," Hoefle said. "He just had to do anything that he could with what he had, which was nothing."

The passenger was reported missing by the crew of the Carnival Valor on Wednesday afternoon, the Coast Guard said last week.

The Coast Guard was then alerted by the crew of a bulk carrier after they spotted the man in the water, and he was rescued Thursday night about 20 miles south of Southwest Pass, Louisiana.

The man, who had been treading water for more than 15 hours, was airlifted to a hospital, where he is recovering from hypothermia.

The Coast Guard shared footage of the rescue on social media.

Asked whether he thinks the man will ever get back out on the water, Hoefle said, "I think he'd go on another cruise. He knows how to survive. He survived once already and, just keep his feet on board this time."

Disney Cruise Line passenger rescued by US Coast Guard after emergency off Puerto Rico

Drone footage captured the moment a pregnant woman was airlifted from a Disney cruise ship by the U.S. Coast Guard on Monday.

A rescuer could be seen rappelling down from an MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter onto the Disney Fantasy, floating in the Atlantic Ocean northwest of Puerto Rico , in video shared by the Coast Guard.

The 35-year-old woman was strapped to a gurney and reeled into the helicopter in the heart-pounding moment. The agency said the woman "required a higher level of medical care" than what on board doctors could provide in the ship's medical bay.

A Royal Caribbean International passenger was rescued after going overboard on the cruise line’s Mariner of the Seas ship Sunday.

U.S. Coast Guard watchstanders at Sector San Juan received a report at around 5:45 p.m. that the 42-year-old woman had been rescued by the ship’s crew, spokesperson Ricardo Castrodad said in an emailed statement. The vessel was about 27 nautical miles south of Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic when the incident took place.

“The passenger was recovered alive and reported to be in good health after reportedly falling into the water from (the) 10th deck of the ship,” Castrodad said. The ship left Port Canaveral for a round-trip eight-day Caribbean sailing on Friday, according to CruiseMapper , and was on its way to Willemstad, Curacao.

“The ship and crew immediately reported the incident to local authorities and began searching for the guest,” a Royal Caribbean spokesperson said in an email. “Thankfully, the guest was successfully recovered and was brought on board. Our Care team is now offering assistance and support to them and their traveling party.”

The woman was taken to the ship’s medical facility and later moved to a hospital in Willemstad for evaluation, according to Castrodad. The Coast Guard is investigating what led to her going overboard.

Mariner of the Seas continued on its scheduled voyage, the Royal Caribbean spokesperson added.

Between 2009 and 2019, there were 212 overboard incidents around the world involving passengers and crew, according to statistics compiled for Cruise Lines International Association by consulting firm G.P. Wild (International) Limited. Just 48 people were rescued.

Royal Caribbean cruise passenger miraculously rescued after late night fall overboard

  • A passenger aboard Royal Caribbean's Symphony of the Seas went overboard Sunday.
  • In a miraculous recovery, the ship turned around, the guest was found, then pulled from the water.
  • Less than a third of man-overboard incidents result in a rescue.

Insider Today

A guest on board a Royal Caribbean cruise this weekend is lucky to be alive after going overboard after the ship departed Barcelona.

On Facebook , a day before accounts of the incident were reported on trade publications including CruiseRadio and CruiseHive , a user who claimed to be on board the Symphony of the Seas posted that an emergency "Oscar, Oscar, Oscar" call, code for man overboard, went out shortly after 11 p.m.

Video from a second user who claimed to be aboard the Symphony also circulated on X , including a clip of a voice over a loudspeaker indicating a person had been rescued from the water and was receiving medical care.

A spokesperson for the cruise line confirmed the October 29 incident occurred in an emailed statement to Insider but declined to provide any additional information, citing the guest's privacy.

"The ship and crew immediately reported the incident to local authorities and began searching for the guest. Thankfully, the guest was successfully recovered and was brought on board," the spokesperson said, adding: "Symphony of the Seas is continuing on its transatlantic sailing as planned."

While going overboard on a cruise ship is rare — a total of 212 incidents were been identified by the Cruise Lines International Association in the decade between 2009 and 2019 — just 48 (28.2%) resulted in a successful rescue.

The Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act, or CVSSA, passed in 2010 by Congress requires cruise ships to use technology "that can be used for capturing images of passengers or   detecting passengers who have fallen overboard, to the extent that such technology is available."

Insider previously reported that, despite those requirements, the Coast Guard hasn't inspected cruise ships for any man overboard technology, cameras or otherwise.

Coast Guard saves overboard cruise passenger in ‘Thanksgiving miracle’

A 28-year-old man on a carnival cruise from new orleans spent a day floating in the gulf of mexico.

cruise passenger rescued

In a rescue United States Coast Guard officials are calling a “Thanksgiving miracle,” a helicopter crew saved a 28-year-old man Thursday night after he went overboard a Carnival Cruise Line ship and spent a day floating in the Gulf of Mexico.

Coast Guard officers in New Orleans received a call about a missing passenger from the Carnival Valor at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, according to a news release from the Coast Guard’s 8th District Public Affairs Office. A rescue swimmer on an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter secured him at 8:25 p.m. Thursday about 20 miles south of Southwest Pass. The man was last seen on the ship around 11 p.m. Wednesday, the Coast Guard said, meaning he could have been treading water through the night into Thanksgiving.

“This is an exceptionally rare case,” Ryan Graves, a petty officer in public affairs with the 8th District, told The Washington Post. “It is really nothing short of a Thanksgiving miracle to be able to pick somebody up after that long in the water without any sort of flotation device.”

Graves said the man was in stable condition when he was rescued and was able to provide his name to the team aboard the helicopter. The Coast Guard transported him to emergency medical services waiting at New Orleans Lakefront Airport.

In its search, the Coast Guard also deployed a 45-foot response boat from Venice, La., and a fixed-wing airplane from Mobile, Ala. Commercial sailors on a bulk carrier told the Coast Guard they observed a man in the water, helping the helicopter crew locate him.

“We are beyond grateful that this case ended with a positive outcome,” Seth Gross, a Sector New Orleans search and rescue mission coordinator, said in a news release. “It took a total team effort from Coast Guard watch standers, response crews, and our professional maritime partners operating in the Gulf of Mexico to locate the missing individual and get him to safety.”

“It is why we joined, really, is to do things like this,” Graves said. “On a holiday like this, it’s good to bring him back to his family.” Representatives for Carnival Cruise Line declined to provide details about what the passenger was doing before he went overboard but expressed their gratitude for the rescue.

“We greatly appreciate the efforts of all, most especially the U.S. Coast Guard and the mariner who spotted the guest in the water,” Matt Lupoli, a spokesman for Carnival Cruise Line, said in an email. Chris Chiames, the chief communications officer, said in an email that cruise ship safety barriers are regulated by Coast Guard standards to prevent falls. “Guests should never ever climb up on the rails,” Chiames said. “The only way to go overboard is to purposefully climb up and over the safety barriers.”

A previous version of this story incorrectly said the Coast Guard received a call about a missing passenger Wednesday afternoon. It was Thursday.
