We’re looking for dedicated individuals to join our Deck team. As a Deck Cadet, you will begin hands-on learning of what it is like to be a Deck Officer. The Deck team focuses on the safety of the voyage so our guests can have a great vacation experience in their home away from home!   

You’ll be working all around our vessel, wherever the Deck Officers need assistance, while maintaining the highest levels of safety.   

As with all of our team members, you’ll be a highly visible member of the team and will constantly interact with our guests and help them with questions. The vacation experience we promise our guests will start with you!   

• Observes the Officers performing watchkeeping duties and other activities across deck department to gain the necessary knowledge and competence that allows her/him to obtain OOW IMO certificates.  
• Familiarizes with Company’s SMS, Environmental and HESS policies and protocols   
• Involved and compliant with the BRM functions and procedures  
• Assisting and performing Safety and navigation tasks as assigned by the Captain/Staff Captain, under the supervision  
• Familiarizes with BRMM, VPP Bridge Instruments, and Stability as requested by the OOW, during the watches assigned to him/her  
• Gaining knowledge of how to use and handle ECDIS, GMDSS, and other communication / nautical tools and equipment  
• Assisting 1st /OOW Officer as required (but not limited to) for the monthly check and inventory of Bridge emergency and nautical equipment  
• Assists with administrative duties in the department.  
• Filing Cadet Record Book and submitting to the Captain for the required notes and comments when required  
• Familiarize with ship layout and roles across departments  
• Participates in onboard training and teaching organized by onboard Training / Deck officers  
• Any additional assignment at the discretion of Captain, Staff Captain, or 1st /OOW Officer  

Undergo assigned trainings to develop skills & knowledge for the future positions.

Report any equipment malfunction, difficulties & concerns to the supervisor on duty.

Follow additional duties, other than listed in the job description, assigned by management due to the operational needs/shortages/changes.

Ensure beverage stations are full at all times and cleaned daily.

Engage in light conversations with guests always greet them with a smile.

You should have at least 1-2 years of experience in a similar role.

Advanced level proficiency in English is required.

A workday in life as a deck cadet

“My working day started at 8:00 AM”, says former Deck Cadet Cor Kortekaas. “After putting on all the Ppe's (personal protective equipment, like work shoes) for the day, I checked in with the ab team to find out what we would do today. With the ab team, we do general maintenance and make preparations for the cargo if necessary. We worked until 10:00 to have a coffee with each other.”

“At 10:30, we picked up our work again. I worked until 11:15, after which I quickly freshened up and got something to eat at 12:00, waiting to start on the bridge with our second mate. We were busy navigating and preparing the necessary safety documents/drills on the bridge. At 4:00 PM, my watch was over, and I had thirty minutes for schoolwork.”

What are the deck cadet's duties and responsibilities.

As it became clear from Kortekaas's working day, the deck cadet's duties and responsibilities are diverse. They can vary from vessel to vessel. First of all, every officer trainee must study hard to master theoretical and technical knowledge. The officer in training can immediately apply their proficiency in practice in carrying out marine work.

While cadets do not bear that much responsibility in theory, they do learn to deal with it. "I had that feeling of having responsibility, and I learned to take it,” says Kortekaas. The following tasks are, in general, assigned as part of the training:

1. Navigation

An important task deck cadets assist with is ship navigation, which is part of the responsibilities of an Officer on Watch (OOW). As officers in training do not have a Certificate of Competency (COC), officers in training are not allowed to do the map-reading independently. Instead, they are under the guidance of, often, a Chief Mate. In any case, under the supervision of someone who is certified.

More OOW-duties officers in training get to learn are comparing compasses and verifying if the lookout and helmsman are alert in keeping an eye on the sea to prevent a collision. Other examples are checking the vessel's position, reading log entries, and understanding and using the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) .

2. Sounding of tanks

Checking sounding is also an OOW-responsibility a cadet gets to learn. This means determining the water depth under a vessel or in a tank. The trainee checks if the Under-Keel Clearance (UKC), the space between the deepest point of a ship in still water and the bottom, is at its minimum. Especially in shallow waters, this type of sounding is crucial, to ensure the vessel doesn't get stuck at the bottom. 

The amount of water in the tank can be measured as well. For cargo tanks, the sounding is done to determine whether the tanks are full. Soundings can also indicate whether tanks are empty, meaning the vessel has been holed. Sounding is generally done after the 0400-0800 watch in the morning and is important for the navigation and stability of the vessel.

3. Vessel departure and arrival

Furthermore, a cadet assists with berthing and casting off the vessel, an operation that needs to be done properly and quickly. The trainee plays a role in the preparation of mooring and dropping off. For an inexperienced deck cadet, the work is mostly physical. After the novitiate, the trainee takes more of the role of a supervisor in communicating the captain's orders and looking after the (un)loading.

4. Ship maintenance

Seafarers who once started their sea career as deck cadets know that maintenance duties are designated to the officers in training. Cadets assist the bosun with deck painting, cleaning, splitting ropes, and making parts of the vessels and materials corrosion- and rustless. There is always something to maintain on board!

5. Safety operations

Cadets also need to take a role in daily security operations. In addition to the need to know the protocols well, the officers in training are also given a certain responsibility when carrying out safety inspections. Think about detecting any issues, checking the expiration date of equipment, repairing devices, and ordering material if needed.

The purpose of such a responsibility in security operations is that cadets are confronted at an early stage with the importance of their safety and the protection of colleagues. The trainees are made aware of the sometimes dangerous and precarious activities on board and the possible disastrous consequences when safety is not guaranteed.

6. Cargo work

Being a deck cadet doesn’t only mean doing offshore work. Sometimes, you have to assist off-board in the harbor. On the one hand, the trainees serve as a port watch in helping the chief officer with cargo work. They monitor the loaded and unloaded cargo by registering the precise loading and unloading moments and by calculating the cargo.

7. Administration

Lastly, trainees help third officers with their shipping paperwork. The administration has increased considerably in recent years, so managers can use a helping hand. Cadets update the Muste list, a list of the operations that each crew member must perform in an emergency. In addition, they keep a logbook of the cabin keys and divide the waiting and rest hours among the crew.

Helping with paperwork also means ensuring that the crew's bail and statements are stamped and signed. In addition, the documents must be kept ready with a considerable number of photocopies. Small tasks like copying are not the most inspiring and challenging, but it is also part of it! You need to learn to obey and to do things you don't like, which are necessary if you want to be part of the crew.

What skills do you need as a deck cadet?

“The biggest challenge of being was my first internship: learning how everything works, how life is on board, and what others expect from you,” says Kortekaas. Not surprisingly, because in your first job as a deck cadet, you don’t have that many competencies yet. Officer training is a way to gain skills, such as technical skills. However, the following are useful to have already to some extent.

1. Communication skills

At the very least, you have to be a communicative person. The crew you are working with is made up of colleagues from all over the world, with different backgrounds, cultures, and habits. You will meet many new people who may be different from you, friends, and family. Open yourself up and learn from new encounters, to enrich your professional and personal life.

Good communication between you and your supervisor is crucial as well. You have to directly communicate your availability, your work, and the issues you encounter. And you need to deal with hierarchy, where you are in one of the lower positions. Being able to receive and execute orders is also part of this. You need to be a team player to work with your director and colleagues.

2. Organizational skills

In performing your duties, organizational skills should not be missing. There are a lot of different kinds of things to do daily. Therefore, cadets need to structure their to-do list and prioritize certain tasks. This also includes, while you already have a busy schedule, being able to respond ad hoc by taking on unforeseen necessary activities.

3. Physical stamina

Also very important to have is physical stamina. While the job of every seafarer is very physical, the work of a deck cadet is even more. Like deckhands, the trainee is the one to whom executive work is delegated, where you have to climb many stairs and do the heavy lifting. Different from a bosun who can take on a more managerial role and outsource the more physical work.

Environmental Officer

Job Description:   Conducts environmental assessments; Ensures environmental compliance; Reports directly to Captain; Assists crew to understand recycling, waste handling, and pollution prevention.

Experience and Skills Required:   Candidates should either have an environmental related degree and qualifications or they should be a licensed marine engineer; Ability to work with other departments; Possesses excellent administration skills.

Staff Captain

Job Description:   Head of the Deck department; The Staff Captain is second in command of the ship; Oversees maintenance, security, safety and navigation. On smaller vessels, the Staff Captain may be referred to as the Chief Officer, instead.

Experience and Skills Required:   In possession of unlimited Master’s Licence; Must have additional qualifications and licences that conform to International Maritime Organization and STCW and its conventions; Previous experience as a cruise ship Chief Officer is required.

Average Salary:   $7,000 per month and up

Chief Officer

Other Job Titles:   1st Officer, Navigational Officer, Safety Officer

Job Description:   Depending on the size of the ship and the cruise line will determine if the duties are split between two 1st Officers. Typically, the 1st Officer in charge of Safety (Safety Officer) is the more senior rank over the 1st Officer in charge of Navigation. One of these officers is also the Bridge Manager, overseeing the training and development of the other deck officers. The 1st Officer Navigation is also a watch keeper.

Experience and Skills Required:   In possession of unlimited Master’s Licence; Must have additional qualifications and licences that conform to International Maritime Organization and STCW and its conventions; Minimum two years experience in 1st Officer rank; Experience as a cruise ship Chief Officer is preferred.

Average Salary:   $5,000 to $8,000 per month

2nd Officer

Job Description:   The 2nd Officer is a navigational watch keeper; Administrative, maintenance and training duties as directed by the Bridge Manager.

Cadet Training Programs for Cruise Ship Jobs

To work at sea as a Deck Officer, Engineer Officer or Electro-Technical Officer, at the very least, one needs an Officer of the Watch Certificate of Competency. Some choose the professional route, obtaining the necessary certificates and training on their own.

Alternatively, one can choose to enrol in a cadet training program at a maritime college and earn a degree or diploma in their desired specialty, also earning the required Officer of the Watch Certificate of Competency.

Cadet training programs provide a college solution that combine academics with sea time that result in a degree or diploma. Various colleges around the world offer a wide range of maritime training and education that include cadetship in deck, engineering or electro-technical. How does a Cadet Program? How does one qualify and apply for such a training program? Which cruise lines sponsor cadets? Here are some answers about cruise ship cadet training programs.

How a Cadet Programme Works

Maritime colleges offer a basic mix of academic time within the college, coupled with sea time. But, depending on the college and the type of cadet program, the length of time spent at college and the time spent at sea will vary.

A typical programme may start with 20 to 30 weeks of college courses and training followed by 19 to 30 weeks of sea time. The cadet returns to college for another 22 to 48 weeks of study followed by 23 to 58 weeks of sea time. During the final 15 to 43 weeks the cadet completes more courses and assignments then prepares for their oral examinations.

Once the cadetship is completed, the candidate is awarded their Diploma or Degree along with their Certificate of Competency. At that time, the candidate may apply as a Third Officer or Third Engineer, possibly with one of the cruise lines that they worked for during their cadetship.

Here are the three different academic options depending on which type of cruise ship officer you would like to be:

Academic Required for Deck Officer

HND or Foundation Degree in Nautical Studies / Marine Operations Once qualified with the Officer of the Watch Certificate of Competency (OOW/D), the candidate will be able to keep a ‘watch’ and could be in sole charge of an ocean-going ship for at least eight hours each day. To continue to expand their knowledge, experience and competence, they may eventually gain a Certificate of Competency as a Master Mariner.

Academic Required for Engineering Officer

HND or Foundation Degree in Marine Engineering A little over three years after commencing training, the candidate will be ready to take up an appointment as an engineering watchkeeping officer in an ocean-going ship. After obtaining the Officer of the Watch Certificate of Competency (OOW/E), they will continue to expand their knowledge, experience and competence, eventually qualifying as Second Engineer and then Chief Engineer.

Academic Required for Electro-Technical Officer

HND or Foundation Degree in Marine Electrical/Electronic Engineering After about three years of training, including sea time, the candidate will be able to take a contract as an Electro-Technical Officer. After they gain their Officer of the Watch Certificate of Competency (OOW/ETO), career progression as an ETO depends on the cruise line you join. There are no further qualifications required for ETOs, so seniority is commensurate with experience.

Entry Requirements for Cadet Programmes

The following entry qualifications are needed as the industry minimum but individual sponsoring companies may require a higher standard.

Foundation Degree (A Level or equivalent) • A minimum of 120 UCAS tariff points, preferably including a numerate subject • Mathematics (preferably Higher Tier) with Plus GCSE grade C or above • English with Plus GCSE grade C or above • Science (with significant content of Physical Science) with Plus GCSE grade C or above

Higher National Diploma (GCSE Level or equivalent) • Mathematics (preferably Higher Tier) with GCSE Grade C or above • Science (with significant content of Physical Science) with GCSE Grade C or above • English or a subject using English (ie, history, geography, RE) with GCSE Grade C or above • One other course with GCSEs Grade C or above Tips to Get a Cruise Ship Job as a Cadet

Based on the competitive nature of gaining a cadetship with a sponsoring company, high academic marks or additional “Pre-cadet” courses, show companies that you are serious and prepared to succeed.

For example, the South Shields Marine School offers a Marine Pre-Cadetship. It is a one-year combined deck and engineering programme that offers the candidate a Level 3 Diploma in Shipping and Maritime Operations. The programme gives the applicant a head start by equipping them with the maturity and experience expected of a cadet.

Casino dealer

Working as a dealer at a cruise casino can be an exciting gig. These workers may oversee poker, blackjack, roulette, and more games.

Gambling service workers make $31,290 a year. However, as with tending bar, the actual wages for casino workers on a cruise can vary.

Many cruise ships have cafeterias and restaurants for when guests are in the mood for fine dining.

Cruise ship chefs may be involved in cooking and planning menus for guests and staff. Chefs or head cooks make $56,520 on average annually.

Deckhands help maintain the cruise ship. They may be involved in keeping these massive ships running, including cleaning and maintaining equipment, loading cargo, and getting passengers safely on board.

Entertainer

Cruise lines hire all sorts of entertainers, from dancers to cover bands and magicians.

Working on a cruise ship can be a great way to hone and improve your craft or even take it in a different direction. The average wage for entertainers and performers is $29.67 an hour, which equates to about $61,713 annually.

Fitness instructor

Many cruise ships also offer various fitness classes, including yoga, Zumba, spin, and more.

For qualified instructors, this can be a great way to stay healthy, make money, and travel the world all at the same time. The average fitness instructor makes $45,380 annually.

Hair/makeup artist

On cruise ships, hair and makeup artists may work in spas, providing services to guests looking to get pampered while on board, and may be needed to work with the ship’s performers.

The BLS groups barbers, hairstyles, and cosmetologists together and states an average of $33,400 annual salary for these workers.

Some cruise ships also hire nurses to provide care to passengers and cruise staff.

The amount of money nurses make on average usually depends on the type of nurse. Registered nurses (RNs) make $81,220 annually. Licensed practical nurses (LPNs) make $54,620 a year.

Massage therapist

Many cruise passengers opt to take advantage of spa services. Massage therapists may work in a spa or travel to guests’ rooms with their equipment to provide massages.

Licensed massage therapists make just under $49,860 annually on average.

Sales associate

Part of the beauty of the typical cruise ship is that it’s kind of like a floating mall, filled with gift shops and retail stores galore. Ships often need many sales associates to staff these stores.

Again, depending on the cruise line and the job, the pay for these gigs may vary. However, BLS data puts the average salary for a retail sales worker at $30,750 annually.

That’s not huge money, but perhaps it's enough for students to get ahead financially during breaks between school years.

Bottom line

Working as a cruise crew member is certainly not for everyone — lodging for staff can be cramped, days can be long, and you might be away from home for weeks at a time.

The candidates for Apprentice Deck Officer must be Nautical School students or graduates who are seeking practical experience or young Navigation Officers working aboard merchant or military vessels and looking for a career with cruise lines.

Upon completion of the contract and based on evaluation of the performance, the cruise line may offer to the best apprentices regular positions as 3rd or 2nd watch-keeping Officers with future opportunities for career advancement with the company.

- A Deck (Navigation) Officer in training

- Reports to the designated Training Officer and to the Staff Captain

- Works alongside the Bridge Team Members and learns about all aspects of the safe navigational watch aboard a large cruise vessel

- Under the guidance of the Training Officer gradually becomes familiar with all navigational instruments and equipment on the bridge

- Becomes familiar with various routines taking place on the bridge - port arrival and departure, anchoring, mooring etc.

- Gains theoretical and practical knowledge about the ship's safety equipment and devices - lifeboats, life rafts, life rings, watertight doors, splash doors, fire doors, sprinkler system, fire extinguishers etc.

- Attends safety drills

Apprentice Deck Officer Job Requirements:

Unlimited Officer of the Watch license (preferred, but not mandatory) plus all required STCW 95 certificates

Very good verbal and written command of the English language, knowledge of additional languages such as German, French or Spanish is preferred

Computer literacy - basic Windows based programs

Ability to participate in safety drills and required training

Apprentice Deck Officer Salary Range:
