Day Trip to Madrid From Barcelona: A Perfect Itinerary

Planning a trip to Madrid? Spain’s capital city is a top destination and has so much to offer.

If you’re staying in Barcelona and want to just make a day trip to Madrid – you can!

Despite the distance between the two cities, a day in Madrid is doable as long as you plan it right.

It can be tricky trying to squeeze everything you want to do into such a short time, but we’ve gathered up all the highlights to give you a starting point for your planning!

We’ll also give you the rundown of the most important part: getting there in the first place. We’ll cover:

  • The transportation options
  • Major attractions
  • What (and where) to eat
  • Shopping and souvenirs
  • Frequently asked questions.

Ready to dive into planning your day in Madrid? Let’s go!

Best Way To Get From Barcelona To Madrid

There are multiple transportation options between these two iconic Spanish cities. What you choose is up to your personal circumstances, because there are distinct pros and cons to each option.

Please keep in mind that the prices are approximate and will vary depending on the provider, dates of travel, and other factors.

Train

You can easily catch a high-speed train from Barcelona to Madrid!

Price: Varies a lot, but usually under 100 euro and often as cheap as twenty-five. Make sure to book well in advance to secure the best possible price.

Travel Time: Two and a half to three hours.

  • Cheap: this option can be very low cost, especially if you book an unconventional day or time ( i.e., off-season, not during rush hour, and/or on a weekday).
  • Convenient: The train stations are right in the city centers, meaning you won’t have to travel out of town to catch your train.
  • Flexible Timing: Trains run around every 20 minutes, so you can go when you like!
  • Fast: These high-speed trains are much faster than taking the bus or driving.
  • Unstable pricing: You could be looking at a larger fee if you don’t book well in advance or if you’re trying to travel at a popular time.
  • Non-stop: While this could also be seen as a pro, you won’t get to stop and explore between the two cities.

Trains are one of my favorite ways to travel because you can really soak up the view without having to focus on the road or directions, while still being so much faster than a bus. They’re also the greenest transportation option!

The bus is the cheapest option on the list, and you’ll get great views of the Spanish countryside!

Price: As low as ten euro, but usually around twenty-five.

Travel Time: Seven and a half to eight hours.

  • Low cost: the best choice for a budget.
  • Comfy: The buses generally have ac and reclining seats, as well as luggage storage.
  • Stops: You’ll get to take a break to use the toilet, stretch your legs, and take in the view.
  • Overnight options: You can get an overnight bus, allowing you to sleep on the journey and make the absolute most of your day in Madrid.
  • Slow: Up to eight hours on a bus isn’t for everyone, and you’ll have to adjust your schedule if you want a full day in Madrid.
  • Less flexible: There aren’t as many buses leaving each day as trains, and you can’t choose your departure time like you can if you’re driving
  • Minimal facilities: There are no options for purchasing food and drinks while on the buses, and most do not have onboard toilets. This means they may not be the best option for some.
  • Transfers: While there are direct buses, cheaper options may require you to switch lines.

You can also get bus passes for thirty euro that allow you to make unlimited trips for a month – making this journey even cheaper if you plan on city hopping!

Plane

Price: Usually twenty-five to fifty euro.

Travel Time: an hour and a half.

  • Shockingly cheap: plane tickets are even cheaper than trains sometimes!
  • Super fast: Flying is the fastest option to get from Barcelona to Madrid.
  • Non-stop: You can get direct flights cheaply and easily.
  • Out of the way: You’ll need to arrange travel to and from the airport to get into the city center.
  • Luggage: Many of the cheapest flights do not have overhead lockers, meaning larger bags are not allowed.
  • High emissions : Planes are the least environmentally-friendly travel option.

Flying is the fastest option, and can still be really affordable. You’ll be trading off ground-level views of the countryside for a weather-dependent aerial one though.

Price : Around ninety euro, including thirty-five in tolls. This will vary based on the type of vehicle you take and current gas prices.

Travel Time: Six to seven hours, excluding stops.

  • Most flexible: You’re in control of your own journey and can leave whenever you want.
  • Stops: You can stop as much as you want to take breaks or explore along your way.
  • Comfort: You’ll travel in the privacy of your own vehicle.
  • Price: Driving isn’t the cheapest option, and it will cost even more if you have to rent a car.
  • Time: It’s a long drive, and wouldn’t allow you a full day in Madrid.
  • Stress: While the route is simple and the roads are in good condition, it’s less relaxing than simply sitting back and watching the view pass you by.

While the fastest option is to take the A-2, you can take the A-7 instead and drive closer to the coast – giving you a lot of beautiful seaside towns to stop at as well as going through Valencia.

Things To Do And See In Madrid

Madrid is a large and complex city with a very rich history, so you won’t be able to do everything in a single day. However, you can definitely enjoy some of the highlights!

Parque del Retiro

Parque del Retiro

This sprawling park is a great starting place for your day in Madrid. Stretch your legs after your journey and enjoy the city’s number one attraction! There are many beautiful historical buildings and art surrounding the park’s central lake and throughout.

Feel free to explore our comprehensive guide on Madrid’s Retiro Park .

Get Directions on Google Maps.

Museo Nacional del Prado

Museo Nacional del Prado

The Prado Museum is Spain’s national art museum and houses many famous paintings and other works – as well as just being a stunning building!

It’s less than ten minute’s walk from Parque del Retiro, so it’s a great place to visit at the same time (or instead of the park in case of bad weather).

You could easily spend days in the museum, but you should allow for at least an hour to ninety minutes to see the greatest hits.

Standard admission is fifteen euro, but many are eligible for reduced pricing so check their website to see if you’re applicable.

Alternatively, if you stop by towards the end of your day, admission is free from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm Monday to Saturday, or 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Sundays and holidays.

Mercado San Miguel

Mercado San Miguel

This historic covered market will give you a (literal) taste of the city!

There are many high-end stalls serving tapas and traditional dishes in the sprawling marketplace, making it a popular lunch pitstop in the heart of Madrid.

It’s a short walk (about twenty minutes) from the Museo Nacional del Prado, which will take you through a gorgeous area of the city including the famous Plaza Mayor.

Royal Palace of Madrid

Royal Palace of Madrid

This decadent and fascinating palace is just five minutes West of the market, and it’s definitely a must-see.

You could spend hours wandering among the gilded rooms and indulging in the sights and history, or even just stop by to admire the view of the building.

General admission is twelve euro, with reduced pricing for seniors, children, and students. Discover the wonders of the Royal Palace of Madrid with our complete guide.

Places to Eat

Madrid is a city known for its incredible food! The city is known for its stews, squid sandwiches (and other seafood), and tapas of course.

It also boasts many excellent restaurants serving dishes from around Spain and internationally.

Places to Eat in Madrid

Stop for a light bite like pastries, tostadas, and coffee at any of the amazing cafes near Retiro or in the middle of the city.

If you’re after a fancier sit-down meal, try JUNGLEKING in Plaza Mayor ! They offer amazing brunch (as well as lunch and dinner), serving everything from crazy loaded pancakes and a range of tapiocas to a carbonara croissant and burgers.

A light lunch from the stalls at Mercado San Miguel gives you the ultimate selection!

You can also check out different markets, like Mercado San Antón , for a more tailored dining experience. There are restaurants specializing in everything from ceviche to wine and puff pastries!

San Antón also may be less crowded and touristy than San Miguel.

For an ultimate dinner in Madrid, it’s got to be Sobrino de Botín . This restaurant is the oldest in the world – founded and operational since 1725, in fact.

Just the dining inside the historic building is enough to merit a visit, but the food is also super authentic and delicious. They specialize in roasted suckling pig, as well as a range of other classic Spanish dishes such as seafood and egg dishes.

Shopping and Souvenirs

Shopping and Souvenirs in Madrid

There are so many fantastic souvenirs to be found in Madrid. Popular options include alpargatas (lightweight shoes), shawls, hats and other clothing, olive oil, wine, pottery, and thimbles.

If you’re coming back with sweets, you’ve got to stop in at La Violeta!

This charming candy shop specializes in violet caramels, Madrid’s most iconic candy, but also has a wide range of handmade chocolates and other treats. Plus, it’s right in the heart of the city between the Prado Museum and Plaza Mayor.

Tips for Planning Your Day Trip to Madrid from Barcelona

  • Don’t overdo it: Madrid’s a massive city, so it’s better to pick a few things and do them well than spend all your time ruching between attractions
  • Stay late : Many of the attractions are cheaper and emptier at night, but the city stays alive and many dining options go well into the night. If you’re not staying overnight, there are still late-running transport options.
  • Book early : Especially for public transport tickets, the earlier you book the cheaper they’ll be!
  • Walk if you can: on foot is the best way to experience the city, and it will probably save you time and money as well. Public transport is readily available if needed.
  • Enjoy drinks and tapa: if you’re going for a wine or beer, you’re typically served a small free plate with it!

Is It Possible To Do A Day Trip From Barcelona To Madrid?

Yes! While a longer trip would be better to fully explore the city, you can do Madrid in a day. It’s a good idea to plan in advance to make the most of your short time.

Is The Train Ride From Barcelona To Madrid Scenic?

The train goes pretty fast, but you’ll still enjoy views of the Spanish countryside and small towns. While the ride is not known for its scenery, it’s still pleasant!

Is It Better To Fly Or Take A Train From Barcelona To Madrid?

Flying is a little faster and sometimes cheaper, but the trains are more flexible with timing, and drop you right in the center of the city. Trains are also better environmentally and will allow you to bring more baggage in some cases.

Is A Day In Madrid Enough?

A day in Madrid is definitely better than not visiting at all; it’s long enough to see some amazing sights and get a taste of the city. However, if you can stay for longer, go for it!

How Long Is The Speed Train From Barcelona To Madrid?

The high-speed train takes around two and a half hours.

Is Madrid Expensive As A Tourist?

Like any major city, Madrid can be pricey – especially if you’re going to high-end dining options and doing a lot of activities. However, it can also be visited cheaply! Take advantage of free museum times (and free attractions like parks), and try dining with small meals or from markets.

Day trip to Madrid from Barcelona?

I'll be spending a month in Barcelona this June. Since I'll have so much time to see the local sights (including Rick's recommended day trips in Catalonia) I was thinking about doing a day trip (or maybe two days) to Madrid just to see more of Spain, since this will be my first time in the country. I already have paid for my apartment for the month in Barcelona through Airbnb so I'm trying to be as economical as possible.

I'm looking at flying because it seems to be cheaper than even the AVE train. I'm seeing tickets on Iberia for $38 each way. They seem to be cheapest late at night, so I could take the last flight (after dinner in Barcelona), spend one or two days in Madrid and then return late at night back to my apartment in Barcelona.

Any thoughts? Other cities in Spain that could be visited rather economically from my home base in Barcelona? I don't want to break the bank but if it doesn't cost that much I'd be open to seeing more of Spain.

Thanks for your comments!!

'I'm seeing tickets on Iberia for $38 each way' - Plus costs and time expended to and from and in those airports, when the train journey is centre to centre. (I am not advocating either way.)

Zaragoza, an hour and a half probably, by train. Why not just take the map and google, not neglecting looking at the images? Whether a journey would break your bank I would not know.

Day tripping to Madrid is kind of far. It normally take about 2.75 - 3 hours one way and costs roughly $160pp one way. If you were going to do Madrid, try to spend at least a night there to make it worth while. Any longer than 3 hours one way is too far for a day trip. Other good options for places closer to Barcelona would be Zaragoza, Girona, Figueres, and Montserrat. Flights can definitely be cheaper, but when the train takes as long as a flight does (consider trans to and from the airport and waiting time), it makes more sense to do the train as it goes from city center to city center.

I hope this helps some.

Tarragona perhaps? Short train ride south of Barcelona. http://www.spain.info/en/que-quieres/ciudades-pueblos/otros-destinos/tarragona.html

To get a taste of Madrid I would recommend an overnight at least. The following AVE trains would give you 32 hours on the ground in Madrid.

07:05 DEP BARCELONA SANTS 09:50 ARR MADRID ATOCHA 2h 45m Direct

18:00 DEP MADRID ATOCHA 20:30 ARR BARCELONA SANTS 2h 30m Direct

Thanks for all the suggestions. I ended up booking a round-trip ticket on Iberia airlines, which was only $78 total. I know I'll have to pay more to get to and from the airports, but that's not anywhere near the amount it costs to take the train roundtrip. I also ended up booking one of RS' recommended hotels in downtown Madrid for two nights. I believe it was only $29/night. So, even though I have to go through the hassle of airports instead of the convenience of trains, I think it'll be worth it to be there for almost three full days.

You can get deeply discounted train tickets if you buy them early (too bad you have already booked flights). Last year I got AVE tickets from Barcelona to Madrid for 39 euros by buying them about 40 days out. A taxi into town from Madrid airport will cost you about 30 euros, the Aero City Van is 20 euros. There is also an express bus that costs 5.50 euros but stops only two places once leaving the airport - Cibeles and Atocha train station.

Thanks for for this this information. As I myself will be going to Spain in October. I still can't seem to find a good price does the train to a and FROM Madrid from Bcn. Any thoughts on the best way to get to Venice as I am also planning to visit Venice for this trip. To cover Madrid Barcelona, Venice. Florence on on such a abort time lol.

Any thoughts will be appreciated

Yes, Madrid is worth a day trip. The high speed train from Barcelona arrives at Atocha station and the only sight worth seeing, El Prado, is a short walk, a couple of blocks, from there.

I'm being somewhat facetious. I'd rather spend a weekend in Toledo (with a day stop at El Prado).

Girona, mentioned by Abe, is just an hour away by train, and is well worth the visit, with evocative narrow stair passageways within the upper old town, and a great lower town, too.

With a nod to Brad, Madrid has at least 2 or 3 other things worth visiting ;-), plus great day trips of its own. If you can make it back to Spain, you could devote a proper amount of time to Madrid and the surrounding area, and/or Andalusia in southern Spain.

Grand Tour of Spain (Small Group)

My husband and I really enjoyed this trip!! The tour was excellent, and our guide, Juan was very knowledgeable and friendly. The drivers, Luis and Mateo, were also very helpful. The weather was lovely, and Spain's beauty left a lasting impression on us. We saw a good amount of the country and can't wait to come back to explore even more.

Charming Spain - 9 Days Tour

Charming Spain - 9 Days

Thanks for the opportunity to comment on the tour. We had a wonderful time for most of the trip. We loved the cities visited and enjoyed almost all the organized tours. The length of the trip was about right and most of the hotels were very comfortable. Luisa the logistics person did an admirable job and was very helpful. There were a few disappointments. Before reaching Granada the bus broke down and we had to wait in the bus for an hour and a half or so. We were given little information as to what was happening….this could easily have been avoided. The breakdown made us late for our Alhambra tour which was unfortunately ruined by the weather. We started late, and, as we started, there was a torrential downpour. The local guide sped up the commentary and then, before closing time, rushed us back through the pouring rain to get to the bus - we got soaked! One woman had a nasty falll and it was unsafe for people to run on slippery ground stones during an electrical storm. My wife’s passport got wet and her shoes wrecked. The rush was not at all necessary as the downpour stopped as soon as we returned to the bus. The hotel in Granada was not up the usual standard of the trip. The meals at truck stops were sometimes of rather poor quality however, I realize it is difficult to keep only to places that have good food options while touring by road. The hotel in Barcelona , while very comfortable, was way out of the centre of Barcelona - the location was disappointing . Finally, the constant use of Spanish and English translations became somewhat tedious. Some guides spoke in Spanish for what seemed a long time and then quickly covered some of the material that they had just presented in Spanish in English. A number of our English speaking colleagues found this quite trying. I would like to compliment Tour leader Luisa, and guides Christina (Madrid), Anna (Seville), Isaac (Valencia) and Rosa (Barcelona).

Best of Spain Tour

Best of Spain

This was a well run tour , we were given good information about each city and place we stayed at. Our guide was competent and informative. Viviana went out of her way to ensure we had the information to see the sights each day, The tour took us to the areas of Spain we wanted to see. In hindsight the trip to Tangiers wasn't a great day trip, it also would have been better to stay in another place not Tarifa,, it is not a great Intrepid place to go.o

Northern Spain (Classic, End Barcelona, 11 Days)

We spent so much time on the bus, even if we weren’t going that far. When we stopped many times had to scramble to find something to eat. The included dinners were sub standard and so were some of the hotels. They were in need of renovation. We only stayed in one really nice hotel

We spent a lot of time going from 2-4 different hotels to pick up people in the bus. Never received the 4 dinners we were told we would have when we signed up. Wished we could have just stayed with the same tour guide! Marina was so amazing and took such good care of us! She made sure we had equal English speaking time as Spanish. And gave us great directions and instructions when we went into a new city.

Julia tours needs to provide more details regarding the tour. Where are the hotels? How central are they, what are you getting for a hotel upgrade. The TourRadar app is good. I liked the ease of the messaging with the tour company even their response wasn’t always timely.

What people love about Madrid to Barcelona Tours

The itinerary was good; liked the fact that we had a lot of time on our own and that we had the same hotel at least 2 nights in a row. Did not like the fact that we had to take a public bus to our hotel with luggage in tow, and that we had to drag our luggage to various pick-up stops. We have not experienced that on prior tours. The day in Cordoba was poorly planned, leaving us no time to tour the city on our own as was promised. Otherwise everything was fine.
Everything was great. Really loved it

The blend of these three cultures has shaped the city’s uniquely designed layout and influenced its food, customs and architecture.

Toledo is a World Heritage City, so be sure to make time in your short visit to head to the walled Old Town, where most of the city’s ancient history lies.

After exploring the city’s beauty, dine on some famous local dishes like stuffed pears, manchego cheese and suckling pig.

One of Spain’s most famous cities, if you’re not planning on spending more time in Barcelona, you can journey there from Madrid in a day.

Barcelona is vibrant and filled with beautiful examples of architecture, from gothic churches and buildings to the incredibly colourful and curved designs of Antoni Gaudi.

To take in the most of the city, head to La Sagrada Familia, Gaudi’s famous unfinished final masterpiece.

The cathedral is slated to be completed in 2026 to mark the 100th anniversary of the architect’s death.

To get a flavour of the city through both its people and its food, head to Boqueria Market.

This market is filled with local stalls selling fresh fruits and vegetables, incredible tapas and delicious baked items.

day trips from madrid to seville panoramic view of Seville in Spain

Seville is the capital of Andalusia and has a reputation for being the most romantic and beautiful city in southern Spain.

Wander through the old neighbourhood of Santa Cruz, which lies around the cathedral.

The area is the old Jewish neighbourhood of the city and still is filled with the old town ambience of years gone by.

Its streets are narrow and cobbled and it is a perfect location to pause with some tapas and watch the world go by.

The city itself is ancient, and remnants of its intertwined cultural history remain today.

The cathedral dates from the 15th century and is the largest Gothic religious building globally and houses Christopher Columbus’s remains.

To get to Seville from Madrid, catch an AVE high-speed train from Puerta de Atocha station. The journey will take just over 2 hours 30 minutes. If you can spare a few days, here’s a 4-day tour from Madrid to Seville and other cities in Andalucia.

segovia day trips from madrid city with mountains in background

One of the main drawcards to this stunning small Spanish town is its Roman aqueduct.

The well-preserved aqueduct is 94ft (28m) at its highest point and, upon arriving in Segovia, is the first thing you will see.

Segovia is also home to the famous Alcazar Castle, one of several castles that inspired Disney’s Cinderella palace for the 1950s movie.

To reach Segovia, catch a Renfe Avant train bound for Valladolid from Chamartin station (53 minutes), then board a number 12 bus to Segovia’s city centre (45 minutes). The entire journey takes about two hours. Alternatively, this day tour to Avila and Segovia is a great way to see two cities in one trip.

day trips from madrid to el escorial view of monastery from above

El Escorial is a UNESCO World Heritage gem and the literary centre of Spain, drawing writers, artists and poets from all over the world.

Such is the literary allure of the city that it hosts many literary conferences and events year-round.

The city is framed by lush green forests and has clear water in its streams.

The most famous building within El Escorial is its monastery; Phillip II of Spain ordered construction to begin in 1563.

Writers have described the monastery as the 8th wonder of the world.

El Escorial is reachable by a 40 minute bus ride from Intercambiador Moncloa. Catch the ALSA-661 bus and visit independently or skip the lines at the monastery and the Valley of The Fallen by joining an organised day tour in an air-conditioned coach. It includes a guided tour of both San Lorenzo del Escorial and the Valley of the Fallen.

Day trips from Madrid to historic city of avila with its medieval walls

Ávila is famous for its city walls, which are among the best-preserved city walls in Europe.

The city itself lies within the walls and is a World Heritage City.

The city walls are walkable along a 1700m (5577ft) walkway that takes in views of the cathedral, Plazo del Mercado Grande, and the surrounding countryside.

Ávila is known for its meat dishes, particularly T-bone steaks served with beans.

Catch a local train from Chamartin Station heading towards El Escorial. Get off the train at El Escorial, and catch another train bound for Salamanca – La Alamedilla. The journey will take 2 hours and 20 minutes. You can also visit both Avila and Segovia on this day tour from Madrid .

day trips from madrid Consuegra and green countryside

Consuegra is a must-visit for literary fans as it is the location of Don Quixote’s battle with the windmills.

Five of the 12 windmills still turn today, and one is even named Sancho after one of the novel’s main characters.

While the windmills do draw lots of tourism to the area, explore Castillo de la Muela, which has been declared a Site of Cultural Interest.

The castle is at the top of Calderico Hill, which offers breathtaking views of the city and beyond.

The journey to Consuegra takes 2 hours 20 minutes on a Samar bus.

best day trips from madrid spain Mosque Cathedral of Cordoba at night

Córdoba is one of Spain’s most historic cities and is filled with incredible ruins, architecture and reminders of its past.

The city was originally a Roman settlement that the Visigoths and the Moors conquered.

Córdoba became the capital of the Umayyad Caliphate during this time and has stunning Moorish architecture.

The entire historic centre of the city has UNESCO World Heritage status thanks to the architecture and significant buildings that lay within its boundary.

A must-see when in Córdoba for a day is the Mezquita Cathedral, once a grand mosque and also the site of a Visigothic church.

To reach Córdoba travel on an AVE from Puerta de Atocha station. The journey takes 1 hour 45 minutes. Skip the line and pre-book your tickets to the Cordoba Mosque-Cathedral here .

day trips from madrid to valencia modern architecture

A day trip from Madrid to Valencia will take you past spectacular scenery before winding up in the beautiful oceanfront city.

Visit Valencia in the spring and summer to see the streets lined with orange trees that give the city a vibrant colour and a sweet scent under the sun.

The streets close to the centre are cobbled and narrow, with beautiful floral window boxes and twisting pathways leading to incredible architecture.

The region’s most famous dish is paella, often made with meat and fish, served with rice and local vegetables.

Try the local delicacy of horchata, sweet milk made from tiger nuts and fartons, a long sweet pastry dusted with icing sugar.

The best place to try this is at Horchateria de Santa Catalina.

Board an AVE train to reach Valencia from Puerta de Atocha station. The journey is just over 1 hour 40 minutes. Although it’s possible to squeeze in a visit to Valencia on a day trip, there’s so much to see, you will want to stay longer. Here’s a 4-day tour to Valencia and Barcelona from Madrid .

best day trips from madrid Cathedral of Salamanca at night

Salamanca is another of Spain’s incredible UNESCO World Heritage cities and is one of the most beautiful in the country.

Salamanca is home to the oldest university in Europe.

The university has been open since the 13th century and has educated the minds of great Spaniards such as Miguel de Cervantes and Christopher Columbus.

Visit the university library to see its incredible 160,000 leather-bound volumes.

To truly discover the city, head on a treasure hunt to explore the city’s most significant buildings while uncovering items hidden among the ornate carvings.

A tiny frog sits on a skull on the university facade, and an unusually forward-thinking carving on the New Cathedral (built in 1509) features a carving of an astronaut.

Board a Renfe Avant train from Chamartin towards Valladolid and change here for the train to Salamanca. The journey takes 2 hours 26 minutes, including the change of trains. This private day tour of Salamanca is a great way to learn more about the city.

Day trips from Madrid to Cuenca view from above at dusk

Step back in time to the staggering city of Cuenca, which dates back to the 15th century and is located over a gorge.

Cuenca’s hanging houses, Las Casas Colgadas, are as old as the city itself and remain in their original form.

The hanging houses have long been a draw for visitors, and Las Casas Colgadas has been transformed into a modernist museum.

The best views of this unique structure are from the Bridge of Saint Paul.

While in the city, stop by a local restaurant to dine on its regional specialties of tender lamb and other meats slowly cooked.

Take a regional train bound from Puerta de Atocha for Valencia-Estacio del Nord to reach Cuenca. The journey takes approximately 1 hour. Book a day tour here .

day trips from Madrid to barcelona Our Lady of the Pillar Basilica with Ebro River at dusk

Zaragoza is the fifth-largest city in Spain and is often overlooked by visitors who head to Barcelona or Madrid.

It’s worth taking a day trip from Madrid and heading out to this architecturally stunning city on the high-speed train.

Zaragoza is the regional capital of Aragón which was long ago its own kingdom, so it has many grand palaces, ornate monuments and beautiful houses preserved for today’s visitors.

There are few examples of well-preserved Moorish architecture outside of Andalusia, however, Zaragoza is full of this incredible style, with some buildings dating back more than 800 years.

Head to the Moorish Aljafería Palace to be absorbed in some of this area’s beauty.

Catch the AVE from Puerta de Atocha towards Barcelona. The journey takes 1 hour 15 minutes.

day trips from madrid spain royal palace of Aranjuez

Aranjuez is a UNESCO World Heritage city to the south and an accessible location for a day trip from Madrid.

The Royal Palace of Aranjuez is striking in white stone and contrasting red brick.

Juan Bautista de Toledo began works on the palace in 1564, but it took more than two centuries to be fully complete.

For a truly spectacular way to arrive in the city, catch The Strawberry Train.

The train runs through spring and autumn weekends and recreates the first railway journey in Madrid.

The cars are historical and designed internally to reflect the train’s 1851 origins.

To reach Aranjuez, catch a regional C3 train. The journey takes 45 minutes, with trains departing every 20 minutes from Atocha Cercanias station.

Day trips from Madrid to Valladolid colourful buildings in plaza mayor

Valladolid’s historic centre is filled with interesting examples of renaissance architecture, including the cathedral, the College of San Gregorio, which today houses the National Sculpture Museum, and many houses and palaces.

Take in the beauty of the unfinished cathedral, which began construction on the orders of King Philip II during the 16th century.

Fans of literature should make time to see the House of Cervantes, where the author of Don Quixote lived with his family during the early 1600s.

In this house, Cervantes completed his epic novel.

Take an Avant train from Chamartin to reach Valladolid in just over 1 hour. Trains run every 30 minutes to the city.

best day trips from madrid by train historic town of Chinchon

A short hop from Madrid is the medieval city of Chinchón.

Begin your day trip visiting its irregular-shaped square-sided, two- and three-floor homes with running balconies covered in baskets and flowers.

Visit the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, which dates back to the mid 16th century.

Sadly, the church was sacked and burned in 1808 by Napoleonic troops.

It was rebuilt in the Gothic style in 1828 and is filled with examples of Renaissance and Baroque styles and artworks.

Inside the church is the painting La Asunción de la Virgen by Goya, the famous Spanish artist.

Catch a regional C3 train from Atocha Cercanias Station bound for Aranjuez (40 minutes), followed by the 416 bus to reach Chinchón (30 minutes).

Day trips from Madrid to Alhambra in Granada

The city of Granada sits at the foot of the breathtaking Sierra Nevada mountains.

Granada is filled with fine examples of Islamic architecture, tasty tapas and street art.

Visit the hilltop Alhambra fortress. Perched at an advantageous height, the UNESCO World Heritage Site features reddish walls which gave it its name, a honeycomb stalactite in the viewing dome of the Hall of Abercerrajes, and of course, traditional Moorish touches such as archways and ornate carvings.

After getting your fill of the city’s history, get your fill of tapas.

Granada is one of the few locations in Spain to serve free tapas with any drink purchased in many of its bars.

Enjoy patatas bravas, slices of cold meats and other dishes served at random for free, or pay a handful of euros to see the full tapas menu and order specific dishes.

Head out early to catch a train from Puerta de Atocha to Granada. The journey takes a little over 3 hours, but a day in this incredible city is worth the long travelling time. Although it’s possible to squeeze a day trip from Madrid to Granada in, you may also like this 4-day tour of the Cities of Andalusia .

day trips to and from madrid Manzanares el Real

Sitting in the foothills of the Sierra de Madrid mountains, the small town of Manzanares El Real is a spectacular location to visit on a day trip from Madrid.

The town sits within the Cuenca Alta del Manzanares Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

The area’s jagged and harsh granite peaks are set against rolling green hills and forests.

Bandits favoured these peaks as hideouts during the 19th century.

Many climbers head to the area to take advantage of its rocky outcrops and challenging climbs.

In the town, there are many examples of fine architecture from the 15th to 17th centuries, including Manzanares El Real Castle, which is filled with fine tapestries and ornate furniture.

Catch a C8 regional train bound for Villalba from Chamartin, before changing to the 720 bus in Villalba. The journey takes about 1 hour 30 minutes.

day trips from madrid to granada statues sitting on a bench in Alcala de Henares

Alcalá de Henares lies just 35 km (22 miles) northeast of Madrid, making it an easy day out.

The city has a rich literary heritage thanks to its ties to Cervantes.

The house he grew up in has been converted into a museum and is filled with furniture and artwork from the 16th and 17th centuries when it was occupied by the creator of Don Quixote.

Another area in Spain to dine on free tapas is Alcalá de Henares.

Simply purchase a drink and enjoy a wide choice of tapas dishes as an accompaniment.

If you are still peckish after tapas, wander down Calle Mayor in the city’s historical centre.

The 12th-century street is lined with bakeries and restaurants.

Take a regional C2 or C7 train from Atocha Cercanias to reach Alcalá de Henares. Trains take 42 minutes and run every 9 minutes. Or book a day tour from Madrid to the Alcala de Henares and the Cervantes Museum .

day trips from madrid by train Hermitage Virgen de la Hoz in Guadalajara

Guadalajara has been inhabited since pre-Roman times, however, the true founding of the town itself dates to the Moors during the 8th century.

There are examples of Moorish influence from this time dotted across the town in its architecture and landscape.

Cross the bridge over the Henares River to walk on a Moorish bridge built atop Roman foundations.

While in the town, try Manchego cheese which is local to the region, Pisto Manchego, a vegetarian dish of peppers, pumpkin and tomatoes, and Cocido Madrileño, a Madrid-style stew.

A C2 regional train from Atocha Cercanias to Guadalajara takes just over 1 hour and 30 minutes.

The delightful city of Sigüenza was declared a Historic-Artistic site in 1965 and is filled with outstanding works of architecture through its civil and religious buildings.

When spending the day here, be sure to take in its three main attractions: the castle, the cathedral and Plaza Mayor.

The castle is a hotel today however its 8th-century roots can still be seen.

A regional train from Chamartin takes just under 2 hours to reach Siqüenza.

How many times have Real Madrid and Barcelona played in the US? What happened?

Real Madrid and Barcelona have played each other on three occasions in the United States, with the Catalans winning each time.

In 2017 in Miami , Lionel Messi was among the scorers in a 3-2 victory at Hard Rock Stadium, although Los Blancos gained immediate revenge by winning both legs of the Spanish Super Cup just a couple of weeks later.

Las Vegas hosted the second Clásico on US soil five years later , with Raphinha scoring the only goal at Allegiant Stadium. Barça recorded a much more emphatic victory last summer , but their 3-0 triumph at AT&T Stadium in Dallas doesn’t appear to have been an especially good omen as the end of this season approaches.
