When we’re talking about day trips from Ontario, there’s honestly no way we can’t mention Niagara Falls. Seriously, sights like this can make you feel all sorts of things.

Let me tell you about this little agency that’ll make your Niagara Falls day trip even more seamless: See Sight Tours . They have it all figured out; they’ll whisk you away from Ontario and take care of all the nitty-gritty (we’re talking transportation and tickets).

You can also hop on board a Hornblower Niagara Cruise and get right up close to the falls. Like, close enough to feel the spray on your face. It’s a real thrill, and you’re bound to end up with some damn impressive photos.

And when you’ve had your fill of water action, it’s time to explore the area. There’s a little old place called Clifton Hill that’s packed with all sorts of family-friendly shenanigans.

Local tip: For the best experience, try to visit on a weekday to avoid the weekend crowds.

Algonquin Provincial Park is Ontario’s oldest and largest provincial park , spanning over a whopping 7,653 square kilometres. So, grab your hiking boots and your sense of adventure, ’cause there’s so much to do here.

There are over 15 marked trails of varying difficulty. The Lookout Trail is particularly epic, with a panorama that’ll have you reaching for your camera faster than you can say “Instagram-worthy”.

But hold on, it’s not just about burning off that morning’s bacon butty. Algonquin is famous for its wildlife too, so keep an eye out for the locals—moose, deer, and plenty of bird species call this place home.

Once you’re all tired out from exploring, drop by Algonquin Visitor Center. It’s a treasure trove of information on the park’s natural and cultural history.

Local tip: If you can, grab a map of Algonquin Provincial Park before your visit. It’ll help you plan your day better, and you won’t miss out on any highlights!

Prince Edward County is a haven of all the things you’d like for a perfect getaway: wineries, food galore, and stunning landscapes. It has over 40 wineries to explore, each with their own unique vibe.

Most of them actually welcome daytrippers for wine tastings! Taste-test your way through the county and discover that perfect bottle—the one that’ll make all your friends jealous.

We can’t guarantee you won’t leave with a trunk full of new wine favourites, but hey, who could blame you? Anyway, you can also visit the lovely Bloomfield or hit Wellington for a fantastic meal.

But wait, there’s more! PEC also boasts some fabulous beaches that’ll have you questioning whether or not you accidentally slipped into paradise.

Local tip: Plan your winery visits ahead of time and leave room in your schedule to visit a lavender farm or a brewery—there’s tons to explore!

Nestled in—you guessed it—Prince Edward County, Sandbanks is famous for its ridiculously large sandy beaches and towering sand dunes. Honestly, with the waters and long stretches of sandy beaches, you will ask yourself if you’re still in Ontario.

It’s one of the largest freshwater baymouth sandbar systems in the world, which is a mouthful to say. But all you need to know is that it’s an ideal spot for beach lovers like you and me.

Beyond soaking up the sun, Sandbanks has some cool trails for those who like to wander. Check out the Woodlands Trail or the Cedar Sands Trail to stretch your legs and explore the dunes and diverse vegetation that call this place home.

Once you’ve had your fill of sun, sand, and scenery, why not fire up the BBQ? Sandbanks offers picnic areas and BBQ facilities, and there’s nothing quite like catching one of those fiery sunsets while enjoying a nice, relaxing meal.

Local tip: Sandbanks can get busy during summer weekends, so plan to arrive early in the day to secure a good parking spot.

Muskoka Lakes Winery is tucked away in Bala, also known as the Cranberry Capital of Ontario. And yep, you guessed it, it’s all ’bout them cranberries!

No trip to Muskoka Lakes Winery would be complete without sampling their signature cranberry wines. Best part? You get to sip the good stuff while gazing out at the lush cranberry marsh.

This place offers tours that get you right into the action. Talk about hands-on experience! Harvest season (from late September to October) even allows you to get your feet wet in a cranberry plunge.

Oh, and did I mention that this place isn’t just a winery, it’s a farm? A farm that offers beautiful trails for hiking, giving you a chance to burn off that wine-induced euphoria, and enjoy the diverse flora and fauna.

Local tip: Muskoka Lakes Winery is a seasonal business, so do check their opening dates and times before planning your trip.

Canada’s Wonderland is an epic theme park located in Vaughan, Ontario—just a hop, skip, and a jump from Toronto. This place has more roller coasters, games, and excitement than you can shake a stick at.

We’re talking over 200 attractions—17 roller coasters alone! Whether you’re into crazy plunges that hurtle you in a free fall, or you’ve got a thing for twists, turns, and loops, Canada’s Wonderland ain’t playin’.

Don’t forget about Behemoth and Leviathan, two of the tallest and fastest coasters in North America. You’ll be screaming your heart out before you know it!

Wonderland’s got you covered with a water park too: Splash Works (opens typically from June to September). And when it comes to food, well, Wonderland’s got more options than you can chew (pun intended).

Local tip: Go on a weekday if you can, especially early in the season or after the school rush. The lines will be shorter, giving you more time to experience everything this amazing park has to offer.

Love it or hate it, there’s one thing winter is good for: strapping on your skis or snowboard and hitting the slopes. Especially at Mount St. Louis Moonstone, the “I can’t believe it’s not in the Alps” ski resort in Ontario.

This resort has runs for all skill levels, from bunny hills for beginners to challenging black diamonds for the hardcore. They’ve even got one of the largest terrain parks in Ontario for all those freestyle junkies itching to practise their tricks or flips.

And, with 36 slopes, traffic jams are a thing of the past—unless you count running into a rogue snowman. This place is more than just a great run, though.

It’s got rentals if you’re not keen to lug your gear around and instructors if you want to level up your ski or board game. And when you’re ready to thaw out for a bit, cosy up by the fireplace in the chalet with a cup of hot cocoa.

Local tip: And, parents, if you’re worried about keeping the little ones entertained while you carve up the snow, don’t fret. Mount St. Louis Moonstone offers ski lessons for kids and various events organised throughout the winter season.

Nestled along the shores of Georgian Bay and just a two-hour drive from Toronto, Blue Mountain Ski Resort has it all. It has 42 ski and snowboard trails, and they even offer night skiing.

This resort has got your back, no matter the season. I’m talkin’ golf, hiking, zip-lining, scenic gondola rides, and even a mountain coaster they call the Ridge Runner.

If a slower pace is more your cup of tea, the Village at Blue Mountain has heaps of stuff to do too! You can meander through the quaint streets, indulge in some retail therapy, and dip into the tasty food scene.

You can even check out the on-site spa or relax at the resort beach. Who says you can’t have the best of both worlds—action-packed fun and some well-earned downtime?

Local tip: Everybody loves a good deal, so keep your eyes peeled for their various packages throughout the year. You might just score the perfect day trip at a sweet price!

Perfect for a day trip, Elora Gorge Conservation Area is where Mother Nature struts her stuff big time. Just under two hours from Toronto and you’re greeted with an epic, 22-metre-high gorge carpeted by forests and by the meandering Grand River.

This place is famous for tubing and kayaking, where you get to surf the river down the stunning gorge itself. No joke, these are rapid-filled rides that’ll tickle your wild side and give you a legit splash-tastic time.

Feeling more “earthbound” for the day? Don your walking shoes ’cause the Elora Gorge Trail is not to be missed.

It’s a killer 5km walk with killer views of the limestone cliffs and cascading waterfalls. Pack a picnic, find a cliff-top spot, and chow down with a view.

Local tip: Early birds catch the worm (or rather, the calm waters and quiet trails), so try to arrive in the morning to avoid the crowds.

  • Fall Season (September 7th – October 9th):

Monday to Sunday – 9 AM to 12:30 PM, 1 PM to 5 PM

Now, one of the best things to do here in 1000 islands (besides gawking at the gorgeous scenery, of course) is to hop on a boat tour. It’s kinda a must-do, y’know?

There are loads of different tours to choose from too. You could go on an international tour and check out both the Canadian and the US sides, which is super cool.

And let me tell you, these islands have plenty of history and culture to dig into as well. For instance, the Boldt Castle on Heart Island is straight out of a fancy romance novel, with its tragic love story and all.

And then there’s Singer Castle on Dark Island, which boasts great architecture and an even greater past. Of course, no trip to the 1000 islands would be complete without trying some locally made food—so make sure to bring your appetite along!

Local tip: Don’t miss out on the loaded fries at the local chip trucks scattered nearby, trust me, they are a delight!

Point Pelee National Park is the southernmost tip of mainland Canada, which is pretty neat if you ask me. You should definitely hit up the famous Tip, a land spit that reaches right into Lake Erie.

You’ll feel like you’re standing on the edge of the world, fo’ real! And let’s talk about activities, ’cause there are plenty!

For all the birdwatching lovers out there, Point Pelee is the place to be, especially during spring and fall migrations. In fact, it’s a hotspot for all sorts of critters—butterflies, frogs, and so much more!

But hey, even if you’re not a wildlife enthusiast, the park’s got your back with its lush forests, sandy beaches, and of course, amazing hiking and canoeing opportunities.

Oh, and make sure to swing by the park’s Visitor Centre, where you can get your hands on all sorts of info about the park, its history, and the really cool stuff it has.

Local tip: If you’re visiting the park between May and September, don’t miss the Freighter Canoe Rides – it’s a unique and engaging way to explore the marsh with local guides!

Long Point Provincial Park is not your typical run-of-the-mill park; it’s a huge sand spit on Lake Erie, and guess what? It’s also a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve.

Literally thousands of bird species pass through here, making it a paradise for birdwatchers. Now, putting birds aside, let’s talk about beaches.

The park boasts some seriously stunning beachfront. We’re talking about sandy beaches that stretch on for miles and miles, perfect for a day of lounging, swimming, or some quality sandcastle building!

And hey, if you’re feeling adventurous, you can also rent a canoe or kayak and explore the nearby wetlands—pretty cool, eh? And before your day at Long Point comes to an end, make sure to soak in those epic sunsets—they’re really something special!

Local tip: Make sure to explore the Long Point Lighthouse for a sweet photo-op and a little taste of nautical history.

St. Jacobs is this delightful little spot, often overlooked, but believe me, it’s a hidden gem. The main street of the village is brimming with glorious, unique shops .

And talk about variety; they’ve got quaint restaurants, bakeries, and delightful treats to indulge in. Let’s not forget the Farmer’s Market with abundant local produce; it’s a wholesome experience.

And then there’s the history and culture side of things. The entire village is an embodiment of the simplicity and tradition of the Mennonite community.

You’ll find the St. Jacobs Mennonite story an intriguing tale told in their very own interpretive centre. A horse-drawn trolley tour? Heck yeah, they have that too, to give you a taste of good ol’ farming life.

Local tip: Try their famous apple fritters at the Farmer’s market; they are out of this world good!

Stellar Things to Do in Brighton Ontario

Many Ontario small towns are bursting with adventure and Brighton is no different! Spend some time in the core of town and then make your way towards the outskirts for more fun things to do in Brighton.

Stroll Along Main Street

Brighton’s main strip really is quite adorable with a number of beautiful old buildings and plenty of green space. Memorial Park is not to be missed and this is where you’ll find the bell from Brighton’s original town hall that was decimated by a tornado in 1973. This is also where you’ll find the town’s Cenotaph so take a moment to pay your respects to those who sacrificed their lives so that we may enjoy the freedoms we have today.

It doesn’t take long to walk from one end of downtown to the other so no need to hurry! Take your time to enjoy and duck into every little alley as you never know what you may find.

Check Out the Street Art

I mention the alleys as this is where you’ll find some fantastic murals! Between the dollar store and the town’s dental centre, you’ll find Casey’s Lane . This laneway was neglected for a number of years but received a facelift in 2021. Take a moment to rest on one of the benches, enjoy the beautiful flowers and spend some time with the gorgeous mural that spans the west wall.

Crafted by local Brighton artist Des Rodrigues, he has incorporated Brighton icons such as the Presqu’ile Lighthouse as well as local landscapes. He also added a section dedicated to acknowledging the atrocities committed by Canada’s residential school system. Rodrigues wanted to create a peaceful space for reflection and that’s exactly what you’ll find along Casey’s Lane.

One of the Displays at Lighthouse Books in Brighton :: I've Been Bit! Travel Blog

Inside Lighthouse Books in Brighton

Support The Local Shops

There are a number of adorable local shops along Main Street that are worth paying a visit to while exploring Brighton, especially for women! Here are my recommendations to do some shopping in Brighton.

Lighthouse Books – This adorable bookstore has a wide variety of topics for both adults and children from trail guides to romance to science fiction. However, I love Lighthouse Books because they have a fantastic section dedicated to Indigenous authors right at the front of the store. There are a number of popular titles but quite a few lesser-known books as well as a few items from Indigenous artisans. Naturally, one of these books came home with me!

Willow Lifestyle Boutique – One of the top-rated clothing stores in Brighton, this family-owned and operated shop carries a variety of styles that flatter all body types. Willow Lifestyle Boutique only carries Toronto-based RAPZ clothing which designs and manufactures all of its items here in Canada. All of their jewellery is also sourced from Canadian artisans and companies so you know you’re truly supporting local! It’s not uncommon to see the owner Lisa Wamboldt working so be sure to say hello if you pop by.

The Birdhouse Nature Store – While you may be tempted to pop into the stunning white house located at the front of the property on 82 Main Street, keep heading towards the back as this is where you’ll find The Birdhouse Nature Store . Owned by Bay of Quinte native Bobbi Wright, she has everything you need to get started on backyard birding. You’ll also find a number of home decor items as well as handy household objects.

Catch a Concert in the Park

Locals and visitors alike head to the aforementioned Memorial Park every Wednesday in the summer for a live jam session! Every evening from the start of June until the end of August, Brighton runs their Concerts in the Park series. A new band plays each week with a variety of music from the grandstand.

Concerts start at 6:30 pm every week and if the forecast calls for rain, the concert will be pushed to Thursday instead. Take a look at the full lineup online here !

Inside the Library/Office of the Proctor House :: I've Been Bit! Travel Blog

Inside the Library/Office of The Proctor House

Step Back in Time at The Proctor House

Just a few blocks north of Main Street, you’ll find the Proctor House . Built in 1853 by Isaac Chamberlain Proctor, it was later expanded by his son, John E Proctor who was a prominent businessman in Brighton. It now operates as a museum where you can learn more about the family history as well as the evolution of Brighton.

While it’s free to admire the house from the outside as well as explore the grounds, you will need to pay for a guided tour in order to head inside. For just $5 cash, you will be shown a glimpse of the extravagant lifestyle John E Proctor and his family lived, as well as hear about a number of the quirks each family member had. It really is fascinating and the tour will be catered to you or your group depending on what you’re interested in! Plus this money goes directly to the Save Our Heritage Organization of Brighton to help with the upkeep of the Proctor House and its collection.

Tours operate Tuesday through Sunday from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm in July and August. There are no set times to arrive as you see fit, however the last tour starts at 3:00 pm in order to ensure it can be completed in time. However, group tours can be arranged outside of July and August from the Victoria Day Weekend until Thanksgiving.

Explore the Proctor House Conservation Area

Just behind the Proctor House, you’ll find a few trails you can enjoy throughout the conservation area. This is a great spot to stretch your legs and enjoy a lovely stroll through nature by Butler Creek. You’ll be quite amazed at the variety of vegetation and scenery these short trails have to offer. The Proctor House Conservation Area is one of the best free things to do in Brighton and is not to be missed!

The Hardwood Hill Trail is the longer hike as this loop is 3.2 kilometres in total as it takes you around most of the conservation area. However, you can make this shorter and opt for the Cedar Loop at 1.4 kilometres in length. I haven’t completed the full Hardwood Hill Trail myself but I absolutely loved the Cedar Loop and highly recommend checking it out!

Kayaking Presqu'ile Bay in Brighton :: I've Been Bit! Travel Blog

Go For a Paddle

There is no shortage of fantastic paddling opportunities in the Bay of Quinte as well as Brighton itself! If you have your own canoe, kayak or stand-up paddleboard, you can launch from a number of spots throughout town.

SOMETHING TO NOTE: The majority of these launch spots will put you right into Lake Ontario. Only paddle when the waters are calm unless you are a very experienced paddler. Lake Ontario is still one of the Great Lakes and the conditions can change on a dime. Make sure to check the Brighton weather forecast  before you launch and let someone know where you are and when you planned to be off the water!

An easy launch point is at the public Gosport Boat Launch . It’s located right next to the Harbourview Marina & Restaurant and has plenty of free street parking close by. It’s a popular spot to launch and you can meander the lakeshore.

If it’s a little too busy for you here, I recommend heading to the Harbour Street Parkette . It’s about 10 minutes west of the Gosport Boat Launch and is much quieter. There isn’t a lot of room for parking but it’s only meant for personal watercraft so you won’t have to contend with any boats or motorized vessels at the dock.

Both of these are great in that they launch you into the more sheltered Presqu’ile Bay, meaning you won’t have to contend with as many large waves as you would launching into Lake Ontario. However, you can do so by launching from the campground or along the beach at Presqu’ile Provincial Park. Though I personally recommend launching from the Calf Pasture Day Use Area and then paddling towards Lake Ontario. That way if it is a little rough, you can quickly get back to more sheltered waters.

Pack a Picnic

When was the last time you went on a picnic? I bet there’s a good chance that you can’t remember, so why not plan on here in Brighton? I say this because it’s the perfect reason to head to  Northumberland Fine Food and this is exactly what you’ll find in their store.

Just two blocks south of downtown, it may not look like much on the outside but upon entering you’ll be greeted with warm, modern decor and a plethora of unique eats! Take a few minutes to check out the shelves and see all of the items they have available. I know I had to do a few loops and it was a struggle to decide what to pack for my picnic with so many delicious possibilities! When their mantra is to transport you to a different time and place through food… of course you want one of everything.

I ended up going with some Indigenous-sourced smoked salmon, Ompah cheese from Back Forty Fromagerie, garlic-stuffed olives, beetroot crackers and some fresh, local blackberries. While you may be packing for a picnic now, don’t be surprised if their impeccable selection of frozen pastas, prepared meals, gelato and other goodies catches your eye. You may want to stop in on your way home so you can stock your freezer with their amazing offerings!

Of course, you can always opt for one of their tasting boards, though I have a feeling you’ll be having so much fun perusing all of the amazing items they have that you’ll want to build your own instead!

Beach Views at Presqu'ile Provincial Park :: I've Been Bit! Travel Blog

Beach Views from Area 2 at Presqu’ile Provincial Park

Hit the Beach

Who doesn’t love a beach day in the summer? Luckily you don’t have to go far to soak up the summer sun in Brighton! A short 10 minute drive south of downtown is where you’ll find  Presqu’ile Provincial Park . Here, 2.5 kilometres of sandy beach awaits so go cool off along the shores of Lake Ontario!

RELATED:  If you’re looking for more sandy spots to soak up the sun, check out my guide to the best beaches in Ontario !

There are two areas close to the entrance to the park where visitors can access the beach. I personally opted for the second area as it’s a little further down and I found it to be quieter. I enjoy a sense of tranquillity when I have sand between my toes! It’s not uncommon to see some vegetation near the shoreline but the waters are perfect for cooling off on those hot summer days.

However, be sure to keep any eats you may bring along hidden as there are a fair number of seagulls that are guaranteed to be eyeing your food! If you want to avoid any casualties, continue along the shoreline to the day use area. You’ll see picnic tables and little alcoves on your right, many of which have direct access to the lake. While these are rock rather than sand, there are very few seagulls. You may just want to bring along some water shoes to protect your feet!

Take a Hike at Presqu’ile Provincial Park

Since you’re already at Presqu’ile for some beach time, bring your hiking shoes and hit the trails! Presqu’ile is home to 16 kilometres of hiking trails spread across five separate routes. While they vary in length with the shortest being the Jobes Woods Trail at 1 kilometre and the Newcastle Trail being the longest at 4.3 kilometres, all of the hiking trails in Presqu’ile Provincial Park have little to no elevation making them great for hikers of all skill levels. Another fantastic perk is that the majority of the trails are fairly shaded but it’s still a good idea to pack your sunscreen and have a bottle of water handy!

If you’re short on time or only have a bit of hiking in you, I highly recommend the  Marsh Boardwalk Trail . It’s definitely the most popular trail in Presqu’ile Provincial Park but for a good reason! This 1.2 kilometre long trail takes you through the largest protected marsh along the north shore of Lake Ontario. You’ll start with a lookout and an 800 metre long boardwalk which then connects to a sandbar that has been dominated by a dense cedar forest. The sheer variety of environments you’ll experience along this short trail is absolutely fascinating and will have you in awe of the trail!

Part of the Marsh Boardwalk at Presqu'ile Provincial Park :: I've Been Bit! Travel Blog

Part of the Marsh Boardwalk at Presqu’ile Provincial Park

Visit the Park’s Nature Centre

One of the reasons you need to visit Presqu’ile in the summer months is so that you can check out the Nature Centre! Each room is dedicated to an ecosystem you’ll find within the park. Starting with the early days of the Ordovician Period and some fossils found within the park, you’ll then enjoy learning about the marsh, forest, meadow rest, old field, lake and beach.

There is plenty of information to be found within the Nature Centre which will give you a greater understanding of the wildlife, flora and fauna found within Presqu’ile Provincial Park. Spend some time with the interactive exhibits, observe the taxidermy animals, and learn about the fascinating characteristics of various birds, wildlife and environments.

Check Out the Presqu’ile Point Lighthouse

No trip to Presqu’ile is complete without seeing the second-oldest operating lighthouse in Ontario! With commercial traffic on the Great Lakes steadily increasing by the early 1800s, marine safety needed to be improved and so the government commissioned Nicol High Baird to do just this. He designed the lighthouse you see standing today in 1837 with construction completed in 1840. The original design showcased elegant elements in the masonry but come 1894, the tower was wrapped in timber and then later covered in shingles to halt the deterioration of the structure.

As you walk to the lighthouse from the parking lot, you’ll pass by the Lighthouse Interpretive Centre. Pop in to learn more about the naval history of the area as well as the lighthouse itself. The non-profit organization Friends of Presqu’ile operates out of here so you can ask more questions and pick up some souvenirs from their gift shop. All proceeds go back into the park as well as developing additional programming for visitors.

SOMETHING TO NOTE: Presqu’ile Provincial Park really has so much to offer and is the perfect destination for some family fun. It’s a popular spot to go camping and you can enjoy a number of other great activities such as birding, cycling and fishing. Not to mention the incredible discovery programs the park runs in the summer months! A few full days are needed to truly experience all the park has to offer – and that’s without exploring the town of Brighton. If this is up your alley, I recommend spending a few days in Brighton just so you have time to see it all!

Delectable Brighton Restaurants

Being in a small town doesn’t mean there aren’t great places to eat and that’s definitely the case here! Whether you’re vegan, gluten-free or an eater of all things, you’ll certainly find some stellar restaurants in Brighton.

Lola’s Cafe

A staple in the core of Brighton for 14 years and counting, Lola’s Cafe focuses is fuelling your body with local, healthy and organic eats with their farm-to-table cafe. Vegetarians, vegans and those who are gluten-free, you’ll find plenty of options at Lola’s!

While I am none of the above, I can confirm they make incredible breakfast muffins with a fried egg, tomato, pesto mayo, cheddar and greens along with the option to add bacon (do it!). Their coffee (sourced from The County Roasters in Picton) is incredible as well and I highly recommend their iced red velvet latte!

Kailey’s Cafe

You can never go wrong with breakfast at a classic diner and that’s exactly what you’ll find at Kailey’s Cafe. Bright red booths add pops of colour against vibrant teal walls as you settle in for a great start to your day. It’s constantly a revolving door of regulars and if that doesn’t tell you this place is great, I don’t know what will!

You’ll find everything you could want for breakfast including waffles, omelettes and skillets on the menu. As I’m a creature of habit, I couldn’t resist opting for their Eggs Benedict and I’m so glad I didn’t stray. Not only are the pieces of peameal bacon some of the thickest I’ve ever seen on a benny, but their Hollandaise sauce is also absolutely top-notch. Plus the coffee never stops flowing making this the perfect way to start your day!

The Gables Restaurant

Chances are you worked up an appetite exploring and if you’re going to visit any of these Brighton restaurants, it should be The Gables Restaurant. Dating back to 1872, this house is one of the oldest in town! While it has been a private dwelling for most of its life, it was converted into the beautiful restaurant you see today in 1996.

Focusing on meat and pasta dishes, everything on the menu is crafted with care. The half rack of lamb melts in your mouth and is served with mashed potatoes, grilled vegetables and a blueberry red wine reduction. Bursting with flavour, this dish offers the perfect mix of sweet and savoury! Plus you can’t beat their enchanting patio in the summer.

Seafood Linguine at the Harbourview Marina Restaurant :: I've Been Bit! Travel Blog

Vito’s Pizzeria

Located at the edge of the town core, Vito’s Pizzeria offers traditional Greek, Italian and Canadian dishes. Family recipes are at the core of their menu that have been passed down from the original owners Frank and Voula Georgatos. Enjoy a bite under an umbrella on their patio as you sink your teeth into their souvlaki, wraps, pasta dishes and more. Of course, you can always sit inside their elegant century-old restaurant!

Vito’s pizzas are absolutely fantastic, especially their Paisano pizza. A base of Marinara sauce mingles with Mozzarella and Parmesan cheese which is then garnished with fresh garlic, Italian sausage, red peppers, sun-dried tomatoes, and baby spinach. Paired with a Caesar salad, it’s a match made in heaven. Also in case you’re wondering, get the large because it’s just as good reheated at home!

Harbourview Marina Restaurant

Attached to one of the popular marinas in Brighton, Harbourview Marina Restaurant offers great eats to those visiting by land or water. Grab a seat on their beautiful patio overlooking Presqu’ile Bay. Whether you choose to enjoy a bite to eat or just grab a drink, it’s a great spot to soak up the summer sun. It’s not uncommon for them to have live music on Fridays which just adds to the ambiance!

Their menu is vast, especially since they’re also open for breakfast, with the majority of their items being your typical pub food. However, they do have a few unique items like their butter chicken curry rolls. I decided to go with their seafood linguine accompanied by a side garden salad. Calamari, shrimp and mussels are all tossed in their housemade tomato basil cream sauce and served with garlic bread. Everything was delicious though I noticed their portions are a little on the smaller side. Either that or they are dwarfed by the sizes at Vito’s and The Whistling Duck.

The Whistling Duck

Another fantastic waterfront patio in Brighton, The Whistling Duck offers amazing views of Presqu’ile Bay. The vibe is very summery with teal picnic tables and chairs as you enjoy a seat right along the water. While I have not had bad service in Brighton once, the folks at The Whistling Duck are incredibly cheerful and make you feel right at home as soon as you step in the door.

Their menu is quite vast with soups, salads, sandwiches, fish, steak, burgers… you name it, chances are they’ve got it! I highly recommend any of their seafood dishes as they’re fresh and flavourful. I can say with certainty that the seafood linguine, lobster BLT and crab cakes are all incredible. And make sure you get a piece of their carrot cake cheesecake to go if you don’t have room after dinner. You can thank me later!

Things to Know For Your Brighton Visit

Ready to plan your Bay of Quinte escape in Brighton? Wonderful! Here are some tips, tricks and things to know to make the most of your visit.

How to Get to Brighton from Toronto

The easiest way to get to Brighton from Toronto is by car as the trip is approximately 160 kilometres and takes less than two hours. Take Highway 401 to Exit 509 for County Road 30 and follow it to arrive in the heart of Brighton. Alternatively, you can hop off the 401 at any time after Port Hope and follow County Road 2. It may take a little longer but it can be a more relaxing drive if you aren’t a fan of the big highways!

While some websites suggest taking the bus or train, this really isn’t feasible. The train nor the bus stop in Brighton but rather in Trenton which is 15 minutes away. Brighton itself is a small town that is easily walkable but you will need a vehicle to get to and from your accommodation and any other major destinations such as Presqu’ile Provincial Park. A car really is necessary for visiting Brighton.

What is Brighton Ontario Known For?

As with much of this area along Lake Ontario, apples grow in abundance and this town is no different. Brighton is known for its apples and naturally, a large number of farm stores where you can purchase them in late summer and early fall. Brighton is also known for Presqu’ile Provincial Park as it’s a popular place to get outside as well as enjoy some overnight camping.

Where is the Best Place to Park in Brighton?

There is plenty of free parking in Brighton, however much of the street parking is limited to 2 hours. There is a lot behind the LCBO in the same plaza as the Presqu’ile Animal Hospital that is free and has no time limit. If you’re planning on taking your time exploring and getting a bite to eat in the heart of town, this is your best option for parking in Brighton.

I’m Planning to Visit Presqu’ile Provincial Park as Well. Anything I Need to Do?

That’s great to hear and yes! You must reserve your daily vehicle permit (DVP) up to five days in advance in order to enter the park. This allows the park staff to control how many visitors are coming in to help do their job of protecting the park. You can show up without doing so, however you’re out of luck if the park reaches capacity! Head to their website to reserve your DVP to avoid any disappointment. You don’ want to miss out on one of the best things to do in Brighton Ontario!

Just an FYI that the Tornado happened in 1973! We just commemorated 50 years since it blew through and our Tornado Task Force with the Brighton Digital Archives did an amazing job of putting together an incredible presentation of video and pictures that tracked the tornados path and provided a venue for local residents to talk and share their memories. Brighton is a beautiful town to visit so thank you for all your kind words in your article!

15 AMAZING Day Trips to Take from Ontario | 2024 Guide

Ontario is the most populous province in Canada, home to both the country’s capital city of Ottawa and the dynamic city of Toronto. There is so much to do in this beautiful province, that you could easily spend months exploring the area.

It’s also conveniently situated on the Northern border of the USA, bordering a bunch of the Great Lakes and America’s Minnesota, Michigan, and the New York States. Depending on where you’re based, you might just be able to take a day trip across the border too!

Day trips are a great option for all types of travelers because they can give one a broader feel of the place you’re visiting. Not only will guided tours be super educational, but they’re also a great opportunity to reconnect with your family on a fun adventure. If you live in the area, full or half-day trips in Ontario are a cheaper alternative to a full-blown vacation.

We’re going to take a look at some of the local trips you can take in Ontario!

Getting Around Ontario, and Beyond

Half-day trips in ontario, full-day trips in ontario, final thoughts on day trips from ontario.

No visit to Canada is complete without exploring Ontario and all it has to offer. Before we dive into some of the best Ontario day trips, let’s take a closer look at how to get around the area.

Like any large province or state, the biggest cities in Ontario (Toronto and Ottawa) have reliable, affordable, and safe public transportation. A lot of the inner cities also have buses, subways, streetcars, and ferries.

In Toronto and Ottawa, these modes of transport connect metropolitan and suburban districts with extensive routes. A one-way ticket can cost around CAD$3.25, while a day pass will set you back CAD$13.50.

If you’re looking to move between cities, or explore Ontario’s roads-less-taken, you’ll have to consider other options. When you’re familiar with the area and venturing out on day trips without a tour guide, renting a car is the most convenient option. As with all car rentals, make sure you get insurance before you leave the lot!

The big Ontario cities are also all connected by railway, which is a great way to get from A to B when traveling across the province. VIA Rail Canada services the whole of Ontario, Ontario Northland services the north of the province, and GO Train connects Hamilton to Oshawa.

Not everyone has the time to explore far afield, sometimes a half day trip is all you can fit in. These half-day trips in Ontario will get you out of the city and seeing some of the best bits of the province.

For example, there’s plenty of things to do in Hamilton and it’s super close to visit!

Cobourg Beach

Day Trip to Cobourg Beach, Ontario

Cobourg is a quaint lakeside town just west of Victoria Park on Lake Ontario, only an hour outside the city of Toronto by rail. Cherished by locals as a weekend haven, Cobourg Beach offers a blend of sand, grassland, and a picturesque boardwalk.

Cobourg Beach is in fact two beaches. Most tours will take you straight to the main beach, also known as Victoria Park Beach, but there is so much more to explore along these sandy shores.

The beach is designed for family fun, offering lots of amenities including bathrooms, restaurants, and splash pads for all types of visitors. They even host volleyball and sandcastle-building events throughout the year!

If you’re after a more secluded beach experience, the lesser-known West Beach is a local favorite. This beach has a more natural appeal and is less busy. An afternoon here can include relaxing on the beach, reading a good book, and swimming in the clean lake water. Bring along a picnic, because, unlike the main beach, West Beach has no food or beverage amenities.

When a single day trip in Ontario’s lake district isn’t enough, why not extend your visit and spend a few nights in this tiny house on the beach in Brighton near Cobourg Beach? It’s only a short drive from the lakeside town and has exquisite lake views.

Rattlesnake Point

Rattlesnake Point Ontario Shutterstock

Located just an hour’s drive out of Toronto, Rattlesnake Point is a beautiful location for outdoor enthusiasts looking for a respite from the city. The mountainous woodlands are a top location for rock climbing, hiking, and trail running.

Conveniently, there are no rattlesnakes in the area – yes, we were surprised by this too. In fact, the park gets its name from the snake-like path that cuts through the Niagara Escarpment.

Take note that reservations are required before you visit, so be sure to reserve your visit with Conservation Halton Parks.

Whether you go to the top of the Buffalo Crag lookout point or watch the eagles soaring overhead from beneath the thousand-year-old cedar trees, the landscape here is nothing short of extraordinary.

For something different, and if you have some extra time on your way back home, try out an oil painting class in nearby Erin Mills.

Packing in a day trip from Ontario is a lot more rewarding than taking half-day trips. By heading out before the sun rises, and leaving at the end of the day, you can easily pack in a full day of adventure and fun with your loved ones. These aren’t narrowed down for tourists alone, Ontario locals also love to explore their home!

Niagara-on-the-Lake

Day Trip to Niagara on the Lake Wine Tour, Ontario

If you’re a first-time visitor to Ontario, Niagara falls will be at the top of your day trip list but there’s more to see in this lush region than just the waterfall. Only a two-hour drive from Toronto, Niagara-on-the-Lake is a small town near Niagara Falls which is packed with historic sites, galleries, parks, and restaurants.

The town has a heritage square which is well worth a visit, but it’s the surrounding Winelands that we are most excited about. Niagara Wine County is a quick 20-minute drive from the waterfall.

It’s the Napa Valley of Canada, and for good reason. The area is as lush and beautiful, and is home to over 20 top wineries that follow tons of different wine-making techniques. Some of our favorite wineries for a day trip in Ontario include the Jackson Triggs Winery, Pillitteri Estate, Stratus Wineries, and the Peller Estates Winery.

Niagara Wine County offers year-round wine tasting activities, but the most beautiful time to visit is definitely during summer and fall. Can you think of anything better than some bucket-list sightseeing combined with a wine tasting?

Suggested trips: Winery Tour with Tastings & Lunch

Niagara Falls

Day Trip to Niagara Falls, Ontario

I have no doubt you’ve already planned your trip to Niagara Falls. Hell, I wouldn’t even be surprised if your entire Ontario trip is based around this visit. It’s one of the top places to visit in Toronto .

Over eight million visitors visit Niagara Falls State Park each year. While it’s not the biggest waterfall in the world, it certainly is one of the most impressive, with the world’s highest flow rate of about 700,000 gallons of water moving every second.

The waterfall lies on the border between Canada and the USA, and offers awe-inspiring scenery in every direction. If it’s the waterfall you’re most interested in (naturally), we recommend taking a boat cruise or a scenic helicopter ride over the waterfall (if you have the budget for it).

If you’re feeling very adventurous, why not zipline to the falls ? Alternatively, a visit to the Skylon Tower observation deck offers equally breathtaking views, without having to get soaking wet.

However, there is so much more to see than first meets the eye. The adventure-packed area is a top location for hiking and also offers a bunch of family-friendly activities, entertainment, and dining.

Canada’s Wonderland Amusement Park

Day Trip to Canadas Wonderland Amusement Park, Ontario

Visiting Ontario with young children? Perfect for family day trips from Ontario, Wonderland Amusement Park has been making visitors smile since 1981. The park features more than 200 attractions, including 17 roller coasters, two children’s areas, and a 20-acre water park.

It’s open year-round through all four seasons, and hosts daily live shows and special events throughout the year. When you visit around Christmas or Halloween, you’ll be treated to themed adventures.

That being said, Canada’s Wonderland isn’t just for youngsters, and the park is a top location for corporate adventures, vacations with friends, or a romantic trip. Like any world-class amusement park, it is home to fantastic dining and shopping arcades, which will be sure to keep you busy between rides.

Feel like turning this into an overnight stay? This comfortable townhouse is an ideal home overlooking the amusement park.

Blue Mountain and Collingwood

Day Trip to Blue Mountain and Collingwood, Ontario

There’s nothing better than a good old trip into the mountains. The Blue Mountains are a two-hour drive from Toronto and offer adventures from summer through to winter.

As a snowboarder myself, I’d highly recommend checking this mountain out if you’re visiting during the colder months. You’ll find a charming base village that leads up to over 15 ski lifts and an abundance of easy to expert terrain.

If skiing, snowboarding, and tubing aren’t for you, there is lots to keep you busy in the village, which is packed with cozy eateries and trendy shops. The town of Collingwood on the Georgian Bay is only a 10-minute drive away from the ski resort.

Blue Mountain and Collingwood are also great destinations for a summer Ontario day trip. When you’re visiting with kids, be sure to purchase the Play All Day Pass, which will give you access to over 10 different attractions including a mountain roller coaster, a canopy climbing net, ziplines, and more.

Suggested trips: Between Collingwood & Toronto: Smartphone Audio Driving Tour

Algonquin Provincial Park

Day Trip to Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario

Located between the Georgian Bay and the Ottawa River, Algonquin Provincial Park is a natural wonder worth a visit in Ontario. The park is huge, to say the least, with over 2400 lakes and miles worth of streams.

Driving from Toronto to the entrance of the park will take just under three hours, but once you’re there, you could spend a lot more time driving between the different attractions. While it’s a great park for a day trip, Algonquin has been praised for having some of the most beautiful campsites in Ontario . Take what you want from that!

You have to pay for a permit to enter the park, so make sure the tour you pick includes entrance fees in the day rate. An outdoor lovers’ playground, Algonquin Park is a hotspot for recreational activities. From backcountry camping to boating, canoeing, dog sledding, fishing and hunting, picnicking, skiing, snowmobiling, and swimming, there is something to do all year round in this exquisite area.

Suggested trips: Algonquin Provincial Park Day Tour , 6 Hour Algonquin Park Canoe Trip , and Algonquin Park Winter Adventure

St Jacobs

Day Trip to St Jacobs, Ontario

Located just outside of Waterloo along the Conestoga River, only an hour and a half drive from Toronto, The Village of St. Jacobs is a charming spot to visit for a cultural day trip in Ontario.

If you’re up for some local history, St. Jacobs has a unique Mennonite heritage . The town was first settled in the early 1830s by Pennslyvania Dutch populations. The heritage of the village has been well preserved – you can even still visit the first mills built in the area! St. Jacobs had a small population with a strong Germanic culture, which is still evident today.

Walking through the streets feels like you’ve taken a step back in time. But today, the streets are lined with trendy boutiques, specialty stores, and antique spots. Don’t forget to check out the Farmers’ Market, which is a big drawing point in the village. It sells everything from artisanal to home-baked goods.

If you want to extend your day trip to an overnight one, spend a night in this classic 1842 B&B with village views.

Port Dover

Day Trip to Port Dover, Ontario

Known for its bustling fishing industry, Port Dover is a small town located in Norfolk County on the northern shores of Lake Erie in Ontario. Today, this lakeside village is well-loved for its beaches, piers, and local community, making it a great stop for an Ontario day trip.

If you’ve never been to Norfolk County, Port Dover is the place to start exploring. Named after the town of the same name in England, it was established in the early 1800s. The village was burned down and rebuilt, and has since developed a name for itself as one of the largest freshwater fishing areas in the Americas.

Boaters will love the Port Dover Harbor Marina, while foodies will be kept busy by the restaurants along the lake shores. If you happen to visit on a Friday the 13th, you’ll be greeted by lines of motorcycles that parade through the streets.

The village is about a two-hour drive from the city of Toronto. If you feel like exploring more of the area, rent out this charming waterfront cottage outside the city.

Ferris Provincial Park

Rail Town Off Road Quad Adventure, Ontario

Ferris Provincial Park is another outstanding nature-lovers paradise on the doorstep of Ontario’s big cities. Just like Algonquin Park, Ferris is a top destination for overnight camping, but being only two hours from Toronto, it’s also a great spot for a day trip.

There are a ton of adventurous things to do in the park. If you visit during the fall months, you’ll be blown away by the colorful trees from the lookout over Ranney Falls. Spring is just as gorgeous, when the park shows off brightly colored wildflowers along the Drumlin Trail. In winter, you could backcountry ski and enjoy the snowshoe trails which are well maintained by park rangers.

Summer is the best time for enjoying time on the Trent River. Whether you enjoy kayaking or prefer admiring the bird and wildlife from the shore, there’s something for everyone. Don’t miss the pedestrian suspension bridge over the Trent River Gorge, which overlooks exquisite panoramic views of the park.

Fancy spending some more time in the park? This quaint cottage Airbnb in Campbellford has everything you might need for a short stay.

Suggested Trips : Rail Town Off-Road Quad Adventure

The Stratford Festival

Eat Dinner From the Farm, Ontario

A short two-hour drive from Toronto, Stratford is a small city on the Avon River in Ontario’s Perth County. Just like the Stratford Upon Avon in England (which was home to the Great playwright Shakespeare), Ontario’s Stratford was also settled by English, Irish, Scottish and German immigrants in the early 1800s.

The city is best known for its selection of top-rated restaurants, its art scene, and its festival season which runs from May through to October. When you visit during these months, you can plan your trip around the Stratford Shakespeare Festival or the Stratford Summer Music Festival. Trust me when I say, these festivals are worth a visit, and they are the city’s claims to fame.

That being said, it’s a spectacular place to visit on a day trip from Ontario year-round, with a charming small-town atmosphere, outstanding dining options, and a fascinating history rooted in English literature, theatre, and western culture.

Suggested trips: Stratford Countryside Dining Experience

Prince Edward Wine County

Tesla Wine Tour, Ontario

More wine tours? We like the sound of that! Thanks to its limestone-rich soil and moderate climate, Prince Edward Wine County is home to some of the most famous Canadian wine producers.

Just over two hours from the city of Toronto, the county plays host to over 35 independent winemakers, each using different wine-making techniques to create uniquely tasty craft beverages. Unlike many other wine tasting trips, winetasting in Prince Edward is refreshingly unpretentious and offers a more down-to-earth experience than most.

Most of the wineries in the region specialize in Pino Noir and Chardonnay, but the local winemakers are always learning new tricks and testing new techniques. It’s not all about wine here, though, and you could also make a stop at the local brewery for a cold one, or wander through the local farmers’ market and museums until your feet give in.

The Muskoka Lakes and Gravenhurst

Barefoot Earthing Experience, Ontario

Muskoka is a collection of eclectic towns and villages about two and a half hours drive from Toronto. Together with over 1600 lakes, a vast forest, and a bunch of great restaurants and bars, it’s no wonder Muskoka is such a desirable destination for an Ontario day trip.

In fact, when you’re visiting this area, you might bump into Tom Hanks, Justin Bieber, Kate Hudson, or Steven Spielberg, who all allegedly have cabins on the lake shores! While the best time to visit is definitely during the warmer summer months, the lakes and their surrounding trees put on a spectacular show of oranges and yellows during fall too.

Wasaga Beach

Day Trip to Wasaga Beach, Ontario

Wasaga Beach is a great spot for a day trip if you want your own adventure, without the hassle of organizing a tour. The beach is only an hour and forty-five minutes from Toronto, and is the world’s longest freshwater beach. With pristine white sand and panoramic views of the Niagara Escarpment across the Georgian Bay, it’s also one of the most beautiful!

If fishing is your thing, the Nottawasaga River nearby is excellent for game fishing. You can rent a boat or canoe and explore the area. Go golfing, skydiving, hiking, biking, or even snowshoeing and cross country skiing during the winter months. The activities are endless no matter what time of year you choose to visit!

Mount St. Louis Moonstone Ski Resort

Day Trip to Mount St Louis Moonstone Ski Resort, Ontario

Ski and snowboard trips are so nice, we had to add them twice! Mount St. Louis Moonstone Ski Resort is only an hour and a half from the city, making it perfect for a winter day trip.

About half the terrain is groomed for intermediate skiers and riders, while 35% is appropriate for beginners. If you’re after the hard stuff, 15% of the terrain is categorized as difficult.

There is a well-equipped snow school and rental shops which will keep young kids busy all day. If you’re a confident skier or snowboarder, you could try a run down the park and pipe (locally known as the Skool Yard, Junkyard, and Outback) for a kick of adrenaline.

A day out in the snow can get exhausting, but there is a spacious cafeteria at the base of the mountain where you can grab a hot chocolate or bite to eat for a quick refuel at any time. You can make this an overnight trip with a stay in this cozy villa with a jacuzzi and private parking.

Ontario is one of those spread-out provinces that has so much to offer. The majority of tourists spend their time in the big cities. However, when visiting a city like Ottawa or Toronto, it’s always important to spend some time checking out the areas beyond the skyscrapers and highways.

Taking a day trip from Ontario and exploring the beautiful nature that the province has to offer will be the highlight of your trip. From pristine lakeside beaches to cozy winter ski resorts to exquisite national and provincial parks, there is so much more to do in Ontario than first meets the eye.

The Prince Edward Wine County is a personal favorite of mine, however, the convenience of seeing Niagara Falls and the Niagara Wine Region in one day is ideal for those without much time to spare.

If you prefer a scenic drive, a route along the coast provides beautiful views of the English Channel from East Sussex in whatever direction you drive.

These favorite day tours from Brighton take under two hours and sorted by travel time. However, peak times and traffic can add to your travel time.

White Cottage in Lewes, East Sussex

Visiting Lewes and Charleston Farmhouse makes the perfect day trip from Brighton for art lovers. Lewes is a charming market town full of independent shops and antiques.

However, Charleston Farmhouse is the iconic home of Vanessa Bell and other Bloomsbury artists who covered every surface in decorative painting.

Lewes is easy to reach from Brighton, with only a 17-minute direct train separating the two. From Lewes, getting a taxi to Charleston is possible, and the trip takes 10 minutes. It is, of course, even easier if driving between the two!

Lewes is a beautiful historic town to wander. The 11th-century Lewes Castle is a fascinating location to explore, as is the lovely Southover Grange Gardens, a wonderful public park filled with naturalistic flower beds.

The Anne of Cleves Museum gives insight into Henry VIII’s 4th wife. Finally, the High Street is full of excellent independent shops such as Closet and Botts and antique markets filled with treasures.

Visiting Charleston Farmhouse  can’t be missed for anyone interested in the arts. Its unique and well-preserved design makes it one of the most fascinating house museums in the UK.

The decorative and colourful painting of the Bloomsbury Group covers the entirety of the house, from walls to furniture, even to cups and lampshades.

Charleston also has a lovely garden and a modern gallery space that hosts exhibitions of contemporary artists.

Worthing Pier

Worthing   is a seaside town in West Sussex, a short drive from Brighton. From Brighton, you can reach Worthing by car in around 30 minutes or by bus in 45 minutes to 1 hour.

There is also the option to catch the train, which will take approximately 25 minutes and drop you at either of Worthing’s train stations.

Worthing is a much quieter and up-and-coming town than its neighbouring Brighton; however, don’t let that put you off. Worthing has everything you are looking for if you are after a beach with a seaside pier filled with amusements but not the crowds.

If you’re looking for things to do, visit the Worthing Pavilion Theatre, conveniently located at the start of Worthing Pier. It hosts live events, films, and workshops.

There is also the option to hire equipment to enjoy some water-based activities, or you may prefer to enjoy a coastal walk from Worthing to neighbouring Lancing.

A range of local and independent cafes and restaurants are worth checking out, including Crabshack, Perch on the Pier, and the Laughing Dog Cafe.

Arundel Castle

You can access the historic town of Arundel and its medieval castle by driving the A27 west of Brighton.  Visiting Arundel Castle   is the area’s highlight, and you’ll enjoy art, history, and stunning gardens in one location.

The Duke and Duchess of Norfolk own the magnificent West Sussex castle. Plan to explore the castle and its extensive grounds for four to five hours.

The castle dates back to 1067, and one of its most impressive attractions is its keep. Climb to the top and enjoy panoramic views of River Arun, the small town, and the West Sussex countryside.

The Fitzalan Chapel is another highlight. It showcases medieval architecture and stained-glass windows. Connected to the St Nicholas Church, it features two worships: Anglican and Catholic.

Wander through the grounds, which offer a mix of formal gardens such as the Collector Earl’s Garden and the Stumpery, an informal area. The Collector Earl’s Garden has fountains, sculptures, and rare plants.

You’ll want to start your tour there since the beautiful gardens open before the castle. It’s an excellent place for nature lovers and avid gardeners.

The bedrooms and library inside the castle are lavish and worth exploring. They display fine art and antique furniture. You can select from different entrance tickets to see as much or as little of the castle as you want.

Seven Sisters cliffs

The white cliffs of the Seven Sisters make a great day trip from Brighton. The cliffs are between Seaford and Eastbourne, but the best place to access the cliffs is from Seaford. This small town is 45-50 minutes from Brighton by train, bus or car.

From the train station in Seaford, you can enjoy a one-hour walk along the coast to the cliffs. Most of the walk is along the beachfront and Seaford Head Nature Reserve. The view out to sea and of the cliffs is impressive.

Before you get to the white cliffs, you will find Cuckmere Haven Beach. Walk along the beach to view the cliffs above you.

Walking this section during low tide is preferred since there is a vast difference between high and low tides. Come high tide, there is very little beach remaining, so make sure you return quickly.

Afterward, continue to the top of the cliffs. Walking on top of the cliffs all the way to Eastbourne is possible, but it’s a 14-mile distance.

Direct trains run between Brighton and Eastbourne, taking around 40 minutes. Or return the same way to Seaford.

On the way back, the view over Cuckmere Haven Beach reveals it is an estuary, just like  Silver Sand Beach . Most days, you will see people kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding on the river.

Old double decker bus at Amberley Museum

One highlight is the Amberley Castle, a 900-year-old structure that you can tour and enjoy its historic gardens.

Another must-see is the Amberley Museum & Heritage Centre. This museum offers a look at local history and features vintage vehicles and industrial artifacts. You can ride on the narrow-gauge railway and see some vintage double-decker buses.

The Amberley Museum & Heritage Centre makes a great day outing in Sussex for families. Along with vintage vehicles, they can learn about old crafts, such as blacksmithing, woodturning, pottery, and broom-making.

The South Downs National Park surrounds the village, ideal for hiking and outdoor activities. Walking trails offer panoramic views and connect to nearby towns. The River Arun flows near the village, providing opportunities for fishing and canoeing.

For shopping, there are antique stores and small boutiques featuring local crafts. The Amberley Village Tea Room is popular for classic English tea and pastries. The village even has a working chalk pit, providing a unique glimpse into local industry.

Tower Bridge in London

You can reach central London from Brighton on one of the direct trains in just over an hour. Train tickets vary in price, with peak times offering the quickest journey but the highest cost.

You have many choices if shopping is more your thing. Oxford Street attracts the crowds, while Knightsbridge brings those with discerning tastes and higher budgets.

Bodiam Castle

A day trip to Bodiam Castle, north of Hastings, allows you to tour a romantic medieval structure surrounded by a moat. It was built in 1385 by Sir Edward Dalyngrigge.

Bodiam Castle  has a simple square shape with drum towers on each corner. During a visit, you can see its battlements and climb the towers. While the interior is primarily ruined, you can enjoy great views from the top.

The castle is known for its picture-perfect appearance and a popular spot for avid photographers. Inside, you can explore the remains of the living quarters and enjoy reenactment events that bring its history to life.

For the best experience, visit during spring or fall, as summer attracts the crowds. Tickets can be purchased online or at the gate. However, you’ll benefit from included admission if you’re a National Trust member. If you want to delve into its history, take the guided tour.

Wear comfortable shoes, as you’ll be walking on uneven ground. Don’t forget to check the weather as you’ll be outdoors. Ideally, you should plan your day trip on a sunny day.

Getting there is easy; it’s accessible by car or train. Driving provides the quickest option. Leaving Brighton at 9 am ensures you’ll arrive just after their opening time at 10 am.

If you take the train, it will double your travel time. Once you arrive at Robertsbridge Station, you’ll need to take a taxi to reach the castle.

HMS Warrior, Portsmouth

Portsmouth makes a great day trip no matter what your age. Its historic dockyard attracts visitors to explore the HMS Victory and HMS Warrior. Below the decks of these ancient vessels, you’ll tour the sleeping quarters, galley, and gun ports.

Be sure to visit the Mary Rose Museum if you have extra time. It showcases the Mary Rose, a Tudor warship commissioned by King Henry VIII in 1510. The ship sank in 1545 and was raised in 1982.

While the ship served King Henry for 35 years, it took another 35 years of conservation to make it available for public viewing. Located in a climate-controlled room, temperature and humidity levels are carefully maintained to prevent further decay of the warship.

The museum offers a time capsule of Tudor life, displaying thousands of artifacts, from weapons to personal items.

For stunning views, go up the Spinnaker Tower and look over the harbor. The observation tower features a coffee shop 345 feet above the ocean, reserved for those who have booked a classic high tea experience.

Military history buffs should visit the D-Day Story Museum to learn about the Normandy landings and see wartime artifacts.

Round off your trip with a harbor cruise to get a different city view. With so much to offer, Portsmouth makes for an engaging visit and a fun day out.

For those interested in Rye’s history, a visit to Ypres Castle will impress. Once a fortress, prison, private dwelling, and court hall, this museum will indicate how life was back in the 1200s.

Rye’s rich history can also be told by visiting the Rye Model. This scale model of the town has a historical light and sound presentation spanning 700 years. Be sure to visit the vintage arcade on the second floor!

No day trip to Rye would be complete without visiting the Mermaid Inn. This pub was rebuilt in 1420! It’s a great place for a drink next to the Giant’s Fireplace, or head to the restaurant for a locally sourced meal.

Fishbourne Roman Palace is a must-visit historical site near Chichester, roughly an hour from Brighton. The best way to get there is by train. The train from Brighton to Chichester, then catch a local bus or taxi to Fishbourne, takes about 80 minutes.

Once there, you’ll step back in time to Roman Britain to explore the largest Roman residence in Northern Europe.

The palace is famous for its stunning mosaic floors, and you can browse the fantastic examples once part of the North Wing. One area shows the Roman Hypocaust System, the early invention of in-floor heating. Don’t miss the Cupid on a Dolphin Mosaic, a spectacular example of Roman flooring.

Legoland Windsor

For Lego enthusiasts, families with young children, or avid theme park fans,  Legoland Windsor  is well worth a day trip from Brighton.

Most come to Legoland for the rides and rollercoasters, including riding Flight of the Sky Lion, the UK’s first-ever flying theatre. However, there’s more to Legoland than just the rides.

You can catch a swashbuckling pirate show or take your hand to a Lego building. Take a trip on the Legoland train while keeping your eyes peeled for animal statues, enjoy a film at the 4D cinema, or wonder at the Lego globe made from 200,000 bricks.

Camber Sands

Camber Sands is a famous beach in East Sussex, England, near the town of Rye. It’s known for its long stretch of sandy shores and dunes. People flock here for kitesurfing and windsurfing. It offers picturesque views with golden sands and blue waters.

If you visit for kitesurfing, you can only launch your kite from the east side by the Jury’s Gap car park. To ensure your safety, always check the weather forecast before you go.

Winchester Cathedral

If you love history and culture, Winchester must be on your list of best day trips from Brighton! Reached within 2 hours by car, Winchester is a thoroughly  romantic UK destination  and a lovely place to escape the bustle.

Often overlooked by some of the bigger cathedral cities, Winchester is compact and charming. It’s a city that was once named the capital of England and is a destination that’s bursting with history.

The cathedral is the draw with breathtaking architecture, but you won’t want to miss the Great Hall, home to King Arthur’s iconic Round Table.

Winchester is a treat for literature lovers, too. Not only is the city the resting place of Jane Austen, but this magical destination inspired the ode ‘To Autumn’ by poet John Keats.

Surrounded by gorgeous countryside, you can follow Keats’ footsteps on a trail from the city into the landscapes that inspired him.

Elsewhere in the city, there’s lots to enjoy. Winchester boasts a pedestrianised high street with high-end and independent shops, bars, and restaurants. Plus, regular markets line the streets with an array of eclectic stalls.

If you choose a day trip from Brighton in winter, make sure you visit the Winchester Christmas Market – it’s considered one of the best in the UK and has a beautiful setting against the backdrop of the cathedral.

Tudor house in Southampton

Located to the west along England’s South Coast,  Southampton  is a great place to visit as a day trip from Brighton.

In contrast to Brighton’s bright and colourful atmosphere, Southampton is more of a step into the past with ancient buildings, surrounding city walls, and crumbling abbey ruins nearby.

To get to Southampton from Brighton, you have two options. You can either drive, which takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes. Alternatively, you can get the train. A direct train from Brighton to Southampton Central also takes about 1 hour and 50 minutes.

So, it depends on whether you prefer the freedom of driving at the cost of finding a parking space, or you’d rather have the ease of train travel but potentially have to deal with England’s typical train delays!

However, once you make it to Southampton, there are plenty of fantastic things to do. If you love history, the Tudor House and Garden and Merchant’s House are great places to start. These traditional buildings are a direct link to Southampton’s past.

If you’d prefer to dive more into maritime history, the SeaCity Museum is a great choice and features stories of the Titanic, which departed from Southampton before it sank.”

Dungeness, Kent

An easy day trip from Brighton, Dungeness providing a complete change of pace and scenery. The landscape of Dungeness  is wild and remote; there are no arcades or ice cream shops, just big skies and the sea.

At Dungeness Point, you will find the two lighthouses, one of which you can climb for amazing views across the Romney Marshes.

Adjacent to the old lighthouse are the 1960s block buildings of the Nuclear Power Stations. While they are not a tourist attraction, they add to the desolate feel of the landscape.

All along the beach, you will find small beach huts and converted train carriages, the most famous of which, Prospect Cottage, belonged to the filmmaker and artist Derek Jarman.

One of the beach huts has been converted into the Dungeness Snack Shack, where you can purchase freshly caught fish and shellfish.

From Dungeness, it is possible to take the narrow-gauge Romney, Hythe, and Dymchurch steam train further along the coast to Dymchurch, passing through a few small villages.

Dungeness is reached by taking the A27 and the A259 along the coast towards Rye. Dungeness is clearly signed from New Romney. Reaching Dungeness using public transport is possible, but options are limited.

The New Forest is an amazing place to visit on foot since there are a lot of walking paths, but renting a bicycle will allow you to cover more ground.

The Hawkhill Trail and The Old Railway are particularly popular routes. They are 9 miles long, which should take about 3 hours to complete.

This trail is a 2-mile walk each way from the National Trust Visitor Centre to South Foreland Lighthouse. The relatively easy route provides spectacular, sweeping views over the English Channel. On a clear day, it is possible to see France in the distance.

At the lighthouse, you can stop for a bite to eat at Mrs. Knott’s Tea Room, where you’ll find delicious homemade soups, cakes, and scones. Alternatively, pack a picnic to enjoy atop the cliffs.

In addition to spectacular natural beauty, Dover is steeped in history, from Stone Age settlers to Roman invasions and important WW2 events. You can learn more about the area’s fascinating history at the Dover Museum.

The town is also home to the largest castle in England, Dover Castle. Built in the 11th century, it has survived many invasions and is a wonderful place to visit.

The best way to reach the White Cliffs of Dover from Brighton is by car. It is just under 2 hours drive. While there is public transport, it involves taking a train into London and then back out, which takes over 3 hours.

Brighton Ontario

Brighton and the Bay of Quinte region is one of the best places to go on a road trip in Ontario . First, I’m going to show you one of the cutest and most memorable accommodations that I’ve ever called home, and it’s right here in Brighton, Ontario.

Stay in a Tiny House

Tiny House Airbnb in Brighton Ontario

Have you ever stayed at a tiny house? This Airbnb accommodation in Brighton is called “ Tiny House, Big View ” and as you can imagine, it lives up to its name! Before I take you on a tour of the interior of this cozy little cabin, I’m going to show you why it’s called Tiny House/Big View in photos.

Tiny House on Airbnb Ontario

This cute cottage sits right on the edge of Lake Ontario. Walk just a few steps from the back deck to the lake. There are a couple of lawn chairs and even a little fire pit so you can soak up those beautiful views by day or night. It’s the most tranquil and secluded place. I didn’t see or hear anyone else throughout my stay.

Lake Ontario Views from the Tiny House

Inside the Tiny House

Wondering what this tiny home looks like from the inside? It’s more spacious than you’d expect. In fact, I found that it was pretty roomy and the ideal place for a couples getaway. The layout of the home is creatively planned so there’s room for everything in a smaller space.

Tiny House Brighton on Airbnb

The tiny house has a living space with a couch, a couple of small tables, and enchanting views of the lake through large windows. There’s also a fireplace and a heater in case you get cold at night. Since the home is small, it doesn’t take much to heat the whole place.

There’s a kitchenette with a small fridge, sink, cooktop, dishes, and a Keurig coffee maker. The owner of the home, Ted, will leave a container of drinking water on the counter for you. In the bathroom, there’s a small sink, a shower, a little shelf to store your belongings, and a hair dryer. The toilet is a composting toilet. It really isn’t too much to fuss over, and Ted leaves clear instructions on how to properly use it.

The king-sized bed (yes, it’s a large bed for a tiny house!) is smartly placed in a loft area above the kitchen and bathroom. You’ll need to climb a small set of stairs to reach the bed. While the bed takes up most of the loft space, it’s a really comfortable place to rest your head at night. I actually ended up relaxing for most of the evening in bed because there’s also a TV up there, too.

Book Your Stay at the Tiny House

Tiny House in Brighton Ontario Airbnb

I absolutely loved my little cabin right on the lake, and I highly recommend that you stay there, too. Book your stay at Brighton’s Tiny House . Please note that the owner is only opening bookings up one month at a time. If you don’t see your preferred dates listed (especially if it’s more than a month ahead of time), please keep checking back or contact the owner to see if you can reserve.

If the Tiny House is unavailable, I welcome you to browse this map of Airbnb accommodations in Brighton to choose another lovely place to stay.

Go Hiking in Brighton Ontario

While Brighton Ontario is perched on the edge of Lake Ontario, there’s a lot more to Brighton than the gorgeous lake views. There’s lots of nature to explore beyond the lake. Some of those spots offer the best of both worlds: lakefront scenery and beautiful forests. Proctor Park Conservation Area and Presqu’ile Provincial Park are two places to go hiking in Brighton that you need to visit.

Presqu’ile Provincial Park

Hiking at Presqu'ile Provincial Park

Presqu’ile Provincial Park is situated on the north shore of Lake Ontario, five minutes south of the town of Brighton. It’s really easy to access this spectacular outdoor space as it’s really close to the town. My day pass to drive into Presqu’ile Provincial Park cost $15.50.

Hiking at Presqu'ile Provincial Park

There are over 16km of hiking trails at Presqu’ile Provincial Park, making it the perfect place to spend a few hours, the entire day, or even longer should you decide to camp there. In the winter, you can also go cross-country skiing at Presqu’ile Provincial Park. I visited in October where the fall colours were nothing short of magnificent.

Hiking at Presqu'ile Provincial Park

I wandered around the Newcastle Trail, which is a 4.3km loop trail that follows the orange trail markers through the forest. You’ll find tall trees and vast boardwalks along this stunning trail. I spotted lots of birds, including some woodpeckers, as well as a deer at one point. At about the halfway point on your journey, I suggest that you take a small detour down the road to visit the park’s historic lighthouse. The entire Newcastle Trail, including a trip to the lighthouse, will likely take you around two hours to complete.

Jobes Woods Trail at Presqu'ile Provincial Park

I also ventured around the Jobes Woods Trail, which is a much shorter loop trail through old growth forest. There’s a wooden boardwalk that wraps around nearly the entire trail, making it accessible for wheelchair users and strollers. It will only take you about 30 minutes to walk around this trail, making it ideal for those looking for a shorter trek.

Proctor Park Conservation Area

Proctor Park Conservation Area

When I first arrived at Proctor Park Conservation Area , I noticed a few trees and a large green space for picnics. Who knew that such a pretty conservation area and forest existed just beyond the parking lot? It’s a wonderful place to go for a hike. While there are fewer trails than Presqu’ile Provincial Park, I think that I may have enjoyed hiking here even more (and it’s free to visit, too!).

Proctor Park Conservation Area

There is one loop trail at Proctor Park Conservation Area, as well as one shortcut trail if you’d like to do a much shorter walk. The entire loop trail is a little less than 3km, so I suggest that you hike the whole thing. The trail ascends up and down some hills through the Butler Creek Valley, and there are a couple of short bridges to cross. It’s very scenic and picturesque, especially in the fall.

The Proctor House Museum is also located at the entrance of Proctor Park Conservation Area, although it was sadly closed when I visited. The Proctor House Museum is open in July and August for tours (Tuesday to Sunday from 1:00pm to 4:00pm). You can learn more about this historic home with photos on the official website .

Go Shopping in Brighton Ontario

Main Street of Brighton Ontario

Brighton Ontario has so many unique boutiques and shops where you’ll find something for everyone. There are intriguing gifts, delicious treats, and even an entire shop dedicated to the birds. You’ll find some of these shops along the charming main street of downtown Brighton, and others sprinkled around town. Here are a few of my favourite shops in the town of Brighton.

The Birdhouse Nature Store

The Birdhouse Nature Store

The Birdhouse Nature Store is around the corner from the entrance to Presqu’ile Provincial Park, so it’s easy to combine a visit to the shop before or after your park visit. They’ve got all of your essential bird feeding needs, whether you’re looking for bird houses, bird feeders, or bird seed.

The Birdhouse Nature Store

The Birdhouse Nature Store has some really adorable bird houses, and the staff is super knowledgeable if you have any questions. They’ll be able to recommend specific bird feeders and seed if you’re trying to attract a certain kind of bird to your yard. Personally, I’d be delighted to see any and all birds around my home, and I don’t mind feeding the chipmunks and the squirrels either!

Mrs. B’s Country Candy

Mrs B's Country Candy

Mrs. B’s Country Candy is a local Brighton chocolate shop where the chocolate treats are made the old fashioned way: hand made and one batch at a time. You’ll savour the finest chocolate that’s high quality, super fresh, and contains no preservatives.

Mrs B's Country Candy

You can find chocolate bars made of milk chocolate, dark chocolate, and white chocolate (their dark chocolate is vegan and dairy-free). They also have chocolates in all sorts of unique shapes and sizes to celebrate specific occasions or interests. Naturally, I returned from Brighton with all kinds of delicious chocolate to enjoy at home (okay, maybe I ate some of it at night at the tiny house!). If you aren’t in the Brighton area, you can order Mrs. B’s chocolate online from the website.

Special Effects Lifestyle Boutique

Special Effects Lifestyle Boutique

Special Effects Lifestyle Boutique is a wonderful local shop featuring so many treasures and gifts. You’ll find the shop inside a charming home from the 1850s, where you can wander through the rooms to find delightful surprises around each turn.

Special Effects Lifestyle Boutique

They sell boutique clothing and accessories, unique home decor items, and locally made products in their gourmet market. There are lots of beautiful art pieces for the home, and delicious treats by other small businesses in the region. If you’re looking for a gift for that special someone, you’re sure to find exactly the right present at Special Effects.

Sunflower Health Shop & Services

Sunflower Health Shop & Services

Sunflower Health Shop & Services is right on Main Street in Brighton, and it’s the one stop shop for health and wellness products. You’ll find vitamins, organic foods, spices and herbs, organic and cruelty-free body care products, and so much more.

Sunflower Health Shop & Services

They carry products that are eco-conscious, organic, support sustainability, and they’re a locally owned business. As someone who is a longtime vegan, Sunflower Health Shop has so many wonderful products that align with my diet and lifestyle.

Pick-Your-Own Produce and Farm Shops

When you make the trip to Brighton Ontario, you must sample the local flavours of the region. There are some idyllic farm shops and opportunities to pick your own fruits, depending on the season. I visited Brighton in the fall, and it’s possible to pick apples, berries, and even pumpkins in the fields. Here are my recommended farms and farm shops to check out in Brighton.

Cricklewood Farms

Cricklewood Farms Brighton Ontario

Cricklewood Farms is a family owned and operated farm and farm shop in Brighton Ontario. The farm has been in their family since the mid-1800s, and it’s been passed down through the generations. In the last few decades, the family decided to start selling some of their apples directly to the public at a farm stand, and it was a huge success. They’ve fully expanded to a retail business where you can bring the whole family out to enjoy fun on the farm.

Cricklewood Farms Brighton Ontario

Visiting Cricklewood Farms is an enjoyable experience for people of all ages. First, you can buy fresh produce and locally made food items at their farm shop. But, a trip to Cricklewood Farms can go far beyond shopping alone. They’ve got apple picking, pumpkin picking, and raspberry picking. There’s also a full sized corn maze with a different pattern carved into it each year, as well as a mini corn maze for the little ones. You can find hours of entertainment for people young and old at Cricklewood Farms.

Cheer Farms

Cheer Farms Brighton Ontario

Cheer Farms is a popular farm and farm stand that has supplied the community with farm fresh produce for decades. What they have in stock changes with the seasons, although you’re sure to find tons of fruits and vegetables for a good part of the year. When I visited, there were many varieties of apples, pumpkins, squash, and tons of veggies.

Cheer Farms Brighton Ontario

While there’s an impressive display of fruits and vegetables just outside the shop doors, there’s a sizable market inside the shop, too. This is where you’ll find Cheer Farms’ famous baked goods, like pies, pastries, candy apples, butter tarts, and apple crisps. Unfortunately, their baked goods aren’t vegan so I wasn’t able to sample them, but I’ve heard they are absolutely divine.

Dunnett Orchards

Dunnett Orchards

Dunnett Orchards is a massive apple orchard that’s existed in Brighton since 1909. It’s a staple in the community, and it’s the best place in Brighton for apple picking for those in the know. I spoke briefly to the owner of Dunnett Orchards, and he said that he prefers to keep a low profile online. You won’t find any official website or social media for Dunnett Orchards, but it’s a hidden gem that you won’t want to miss.

Dunnett Orchards

You can wander the orchards and pick your own apples, and they also have freshly picked apples if you’d like to grab some and go. These are some of the best apples I’ve ever tasted in my life! They’re so fresh and crisp, picked right off the tree. If you’re looking for some apples to eat fresh or bake a pie, head straight to Dunnett Orchards to pick apples at this 100+ year old orchard.

Vegan Dining in Brighton Ontario

While there aren’t any strictly vegan or vegetarian restaurants in Brighton, there are a few establishments where you can find some plant-based meals on the menu. Here’s where I dined in Brighton, and I highly recommend that you check out these spots for vegan food.

Lola’s Cafe

Lola's Cafe / Lola's Coffee House

Lola’s Cafe is my top choice for vegan dining in Brighton Ontario, and it’s also a great place to stop for coffee, too. They cater to all diets, including vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free. The veggie and gluten-free options are clearly marked on the menu (vegan has a VG).

Lola's Cafe / Lola's Coffee House

While they had a delicious sounding vegan grilled cheese sandwich and soup option, I decided to order the rice and bean burrito. They added vegan cheese inside the burrito in place of the dairy cheese. The burrito was really yummy and satisfying, and it came with a side of potato chips. There’s a calm and casual dining atmosphere indoors, and you can also sit out on a small patio out front.

The Rendezvous at Timber House Resort

Rendezvous at Timber House Resort

The Rendezvous is an adorable Airstream turned into a food truck outside of the Timber House Resort. There’s a patio outside of the food truck, but you can also dine indoors as well. You’ll find a lot of yummy fried food here and there are a couple of vegetarian and vegan options as well.

Rendezvous at Timber House Resort

I ordered the black bean vegan burger with a side of fries (aka a mountain of fries!), and it was absolutely delicious. The burger is really flavourful and there was a really large helping of fries alongside it. There’s also a vegan chana masala on the menu, and a number of other vegetarian meals. The service was fast and the employees were really friendly.

The Whistling Duck

The Whistling Duck

The Whistling Duck is a local favourite featuring a patio that’s right on the waterfront. You can enjoy your meals at this delightful restaurant with a beautiful view, which looks especially stunning at dusk. In terms of vegan options, The Whistling Duck has a veggie burger on the menu.

The Whistling Duck

As I had a veggie burger the previous evening at Rendezvous, I decided to order some bruschetta bread and a garden salad for a lighter meal that evening. The order of bruschetta bread was so big that I got to enjoy a second meal later that night back at the tiny house! The food was great, the service was excellent, and the view was fabulous.

13 BEST Day Trips from Brighton, England

Looking for the best day trips from brighton from exploring ancient arundel castle to the seven sisters, check out these amazing brighton day trips..

day trips from brighton

Everyone knows and loves Brighton, right? It’s got this buzzing excitement like few other places in England. There are some incredible restaurants, you can’t help but feel like a kid again at Brighton Pier, and the views along the coast are stunning. I for one absolutely love it there, and I know I’m not the only one!

Due to its location, there are plenty of amazing day trips from Brighton that you can visit within a couple of hours’ drive from the city itself. And if you don’t have access to a car, don’t worry. There are also loads of train routes out of Brighton on a daily basis. That means you’ll be able to visit all of these places listed very easily!

So, where are you heading, that’s the question?

best day trips from brighton

Whether you want to dive into history at Anne Boleyn’s old house at Hever Castle, or you want to breathe in the fresh English air in the South Downs National Park, you can easily find something to fit all interests and budgets.

I love that the wider Sussex area is filled with quaint towns, shops, pubs and excursions, but if you want something a little more fast-paced, you can get into London in about 45 minutes.

So, what amazing and inspiring activities can you expect to discover on a Brighton day trip? Let’s dive in and find out more!

Day Trips from Brighton

South downs national park.

brighton day out

One of the best things about being in East Sussex is that you’re only around half an hour by car away from the lush greenery of the South Downs National Park.

Whether you just fancy a slow walk around some of the more popular trails, or you’ve come prepared with a bike to work up a sweat, you’re almost guaranteed a lovely day out just a short distance from the city.

One of the walks we’d really recommend is Kingley Vale . Just wait till you see the ancient yew forest here – it’s amazing!

Arundel Castle

brighton day trip

There is no shortage of beautiful castles in the area surrounding Brighton, but Arundel Castle is up there with the best. Town around it are picturesque and bring to mind fairytale imagery.

With almost 1,000 years of history spread throughout the castle and the accompanying gardens, this site has seen so much. Take a guided tour to fully appreciate everything that’s gone on here.

You can get here in 40 minutes by car from Brighton, or change at Barnham on the train. This really is one of the best places to visit near Brighton, so check it out!

rye

Quaint, postcard towns are scattered across East Sussex, but the seaside town of Rye is something else entirely. Known for its cobblestone streets and independent shops and restaurants, Rye is a pleasant place to while away the day.

If you’re feeling adventurous, it’s also a popular spot for watersports such as windsurfing. Get that adrenaline pumping before finding a cosy pub to warm up in with a meal and a pint. Sounds perfect, right?

Hever Castle

hever castle

Harking back to the 13th century, Hever Castle is a beautiful castle in neighbouring Kent, but it’s the residents of the castle that makes it interesting.

As the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, Henry VIII’s second wife, Hever Castle is forever tied into the bloody royal history of Tudor England.

Here you can explore the medieval and renaissance-era rooms before wandering around the expansive gardens. Honestly, you have to see them to understand how beautiful they are. For me, this is definitely one of the best day trips from Brighton!

The Seven Sisters

seven sisters

Do you love looking out over stunning coastal views? Then head to The Seven Sisters area. This is a series of chalk cliffs that are an iconic image of England.

From here you can see out across the English Channel towards France. One of my favourite walks here is the Beachy Head walk . This is the highest section of the cliffs, and once again the views are just magnificent.

It’s a geological marvel and has been studied for centuries. Pack a picnic and your hiking boots and explore this patch of coastal paradise. Just make sure you’re ready to have sore legs the next day!

If you’re looking for a tour from Brighton, then this one is the best around . It even includes visit the South Downs National Park too!

lewes england

I love a small English town, but the best time to visit the nearby town of Lewes is on Bonfire Night. The 5th November celebrations are on a whole other level in Lewes with effigies of disliked figures being burned, huge bonfires, firework displays, parades, and more all occurring.

The rest of the year, Lewes is a pleasant and historic market town, filled with cosy and delicious pubs, a beautiful castle, and even another house belonging to one of Henry VIII’s wives – Anne of Cleves house, King Henry VIII’s fourth wife.

hastings england

If you’re looking for a quirky seaside town to visit that’s only an hour away from Brighton, a day trip to Hastings might be just what you’re after. This historic town was made famous by the 1066 Battle of Hastings, where William the Conqueror became King of England.

Nowadays, you can wander the pebbled beaches, explore the independent shops, and take the cliffside funicular railway up the face of the cliff, giving you expansive views over the bay.

Afterwards, wander around the town and call into one of the many amazing restaurants and bars that litter the quaint streets.

brighton to london

What can be said about London that hasn’t already been said? The bustling and vibrant capital of the UK is one of the most visited places in the world, so it’s no surprise this is one of the most popular Brighton day trips.

From iconic museums to world-class restaurants to exhibitions and attractions, and more, you can visit a dozen times over and still not see and do everything.

You can get to London in just over an hour on the train from Brighton, and with the traffic and congestion charges in London, I would not recommend driving!

One of the best ways of seeing London is on a Thames River cruise . These tours are always a great way of ticking off a lot of the major sites in London like Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament.

Wine Tasting Tours

brighton one day trip

Okay, so English wines might not be as famous as French or Italian wines, but they’re definitely coming up through the ranks and making waves. The area around East Sussex is one of the warmest and driest parts of the country, making it perfect for growing grapes.

Mostly specialising in dry white wines and sparkling wines, there are a handful of popular vineyards within an hour’s drive of Brighton. Take a tour of the premises, have a tasting, and maybe buy a bottle or two to have when you get back to your Brighton base. Just make sure to have a designated driver at the ready!

Bournemouth

bournemouth

As lovely as the Brighton beaches are, they are pebble beaches rather than soft golden sand. For that, you can go on a day trip to Bournemouth.

Another popular holiday spot, Bournemouth is one of the furthest day trips on this list being around two to two and a half hours away from Brighton by car in Dorset.

Located on the south coast of England, you can spread out along the seven miles of sand or wander the iconic pier and take in the sea views. If you’re looking for a quintessential family day out at the beach, this is the place to be!

Herstmonceux

herstmonceux observatory

Are you interested in the world of astronomy and space travel? Located a short 50-minute drive outside of the Brighton city limits you’ll find the Herstmonceux observatory . Even though it’s less than an hour away from Brighton, this part of the Sussex countryside is famous for its dark skies status.

You can take part in guided tours of the observatory, and learn about the history and science behind the site. The real magic happens when the sun goes down and you can see the stars in all their glory. If you don’t mind wrapping up warm, clear Winter days may be best as it gets dark earlier.

Devil’s Dyke

devils dyke

Despite the odd name, Devil’s Dyke is a hugely popular V-shaped valley within the South Downs National Park. Filled with exciting and varied hiking trails, designed to suit a range of abilities and time restraints, this area is popular with dog walkers, runners, cyclists, and more.

With a car park operated by the National Trust, you can take advantage of free parking if you’re a member. After you’ve finished wandering, head to the Devil’s Dyke pub for a refreshing pint and a well-earned pub lunch before journeying back to Brighton.

portsmouth

If you’re interested in naval or maritime history, there is no better palace to visit in the UK than Portsmouth. As the hub of a lot of British Naval activity throughout history, you can explore plenty of amazing sights, including the HMS Victory , an old naval ship that is docked in Portsmouth Harbour. It’s definitely an impressive place to walk around and learn about, even if you’re not a fan of boats or military history!

If you want more Tudor history, check out the restored Mary Rose that has been raised from the ocean floor after it was sunk back in the 16th century and has been painstakingly restored and displayed in Portsmouth.

You can get here in just over an hour by car and an hour and 20 minutes by train.

So, whether you’re looking for history, culture, or adventure there are so many amazing tours and day trips from Brighton to explore. Which one of these are you most looking forward to doing? You can let me know in the comments below!

During the idyllic Brighton summer season, the club offers regular sea kayaking sessions, every Wednesday evening from 18:00 to 20:30. Held at Brighton Sailing Club, just down from Churchill Square, these sessions are a great way to meet fellow kayakers and to enjoy the social side of a sea-sailing session.

And, with concessions for students, young people under 29 and people receiving a low income, you can enjoy a whole year of kayaking for as little as £20.60. If you are new to paddling, you must attend one of the club’s Kayak inductions before you can attend the regular weekly paddles. These cost just £10 and are available every 2-3 weeks.

If this tickles your paddling pickle, then Brighton Sailing Club offer New/Prospective Members Nights on the second Wednesday of each month, to learn more about the club, meet the other members and ask questions. This is a great opportunity to find out whether the kayaking on offer is right for you, and to meet your prospective fellow paddlers.

The club also offers occasional day-trips and weekend trips at an extra cost, including to local rivers, to enjoy flat and easy paddles, as well as day trips to White Water Centres. In Winter and Spring, expect weekend trips to low-grade white-water, and you can even expect the occasional trip to the Alps!

Toronto, the largest city in Canada, is bustling and full of activities to keep you busy. As a born and bred Torontonian, it can get hectic as much as we love our place as the official/unofficial centre of Canada’s universe. We sometimes must escape from high tourism and construction (our unofficial 5th season).

Located in Southern Ontario, it’s perfectly situated to explore the region, with plenty of fantastic weekend getaways and day trips from Toronto. Admittedly, most of our itineraries use Toronto as the starting point, hence the CN Tower in our logo.

When you feel like you need a break from city life to breathe fresh air, get your body moving or explore nearby history and culture, you can visit incredible places around Toronto . Within a couple of hours, you can paddle across spectacular lakes and rivers, get ‘lost’ among wildlife on hiking trails, eat sweets at quaint cafes or sip vino at the top wineries in the province.

If you haven’t got a weekend to camp in Huntsville or discover Kingston , We’ve compiled a list of the best road trips from Toronto for a weekend getaway so that you can explore Ontario one weekend at a time.

Renting a car is an option if you don’t have a car or have friends with cars. With so many car rental options in Toronto, finding one that fits your needs shouldn’t be hard.

If you’re done exploring all the great things to do and see in Kingston, you might be ready for a day trip. Luckily, there are a number of amazing day trip ideas from Kingston that will have you out of the city in no time at all.

From stunning hikes with views to charming small towns, local waterways, and even wineries to visit, there is a Kingston day trip to suit all interests.

For this post, we teamed up with another Kingstonian to tap into even more local explorer knowledge. Hailing from near Ottawa, Chris F. is a good friend/former housemate of Eric’s – and the two of them combined have almost 20 years of experience living in Kingston.

So, here’s our detailed guide on some top day trip ideas you can embark on from Kingston!

Table of Contents

Hiking & Beach Hopping at Sandbanks & West Lake

navigate map Distance from Kingston:  Sandbanks is about one hour 20 minutes west of Kingston via the 401 to County Road 49. You could also take Route 33 into the County – that includes the Glenora Ferry crossing!

girl in red toque walking on sandy trail with wooden tail marker beside.

The whole Sandbanks area is a marvel. As Canadians, we are spoiled by endless lakes and rivers, forests and mountains.  But did you know there is a massive sand dune formation just an hour away from Kingston in Prince Edward County?

It is a unique feature to see and reminds one of a desert – something we don’t often see in Canada, let alone in Ontario. Sandbanks itself is a popular Provincial Park . A great day out of the city involves using the Park’s day-use areas with a hike and long walk of Lakeshore Beach.

Read More: Our Detailed Guide to Discovering Sandbanks Provincial Park

However, if you venture inland, you’ll reach the inland lake called West Lake. It’s here that you will be greeted by enormous sand dunes and Dunes Beach.

On these rolling dune formations, the world is your oyster. You can hike, tan, swim, frisbee, or just roll down the dune for good fun. The sandy dunes transform into an amazing snowshoe trail in the winter, with windswept hills of endless sand and snow.

If you have some time, be sure to stop by a winery, brewery, or café on your way home.  Redtail Vineyards is lovely, Matron Fine Beer is very fine, and Beacon Bike and Brew for is a great coffee stop.

Speaking of PEC, the whole region is prime for day trips from Kingston that suit all different interests. While some might go for Sandbanks and the beaches, others may head there for the wine and beer!

Prince Edward County is among the top wine-producing regions in the province. It can often feel hard to keep up with all the new PEC wineries popping up! Some notables are Huff Estates, Trail Estate, and – one of our favourites – Sandbanks Estate Winery.

Along with wine, the brewery and cider scene is also exploding – with Lake on the Mountain Brewery, Parson’s and Matron Fine Beer just a few of the PEC breweries you can visit.

With so many places to stop in for a tasting, it’s a great idea to get a designated driver or hop on a PEC wine tour . This way, you can simply sit back and enjoy the tastings while a driver navigates the beautiful region!

PEC also makes a terrific weekend getaway in Ontario destination if you have more time.

Canoe Tripping in Frontenac Park

navigate map Distance from Kingston:  45 minutes north of Kingston

A common theme from Kingstonians is “I moved here and fell in love.” And while the city itself offers everything a large city offers, the primary reason many people love Kingston and stay here is because of the area it is surrounded by – known as South Frontenac.

This is an area of countless lakes, swamps, rivers, and hikes with the opportunity for camping, canoeing, and experiencing true nature. The best part? It starts only minutes outside of Kingston and does not involve hours of sitting in traffic to get to.

A favourite outing is heading for Frontenac Provincial Park for a calming paddle. You can rent canoes/kayaks from Frontenac Outfitters located close by. They will fully gear you up for a day’s adventure in Frontenac Park for a very reasonable price.

Once you’ve entered the park, a favourite area for paddling is North and South Otter Lakes. Here, you will be greeted by beaver dams, several islands and cliffs, osprey nests, and an abundance of curious fish and turtles.

Start South and loop around South Otter Lake before canoeing through the culvert under the road to access the busier North Otter Lake.  Bring lots of sunscreen, water, and a picnic lunch to enjoy on an island of your own.

If you have more time than just a day trip, Frontenac Park is a prime location for accessible backcountry camping in Ontario .

Hike For Views at Rock Dunder

navigate map Distance from Kingston:  45 minutes driving up Hwy 15 northwest of Kingston

rock cliff with green trees and lakes in distance below at rock dunder hike.

For a classic Ontario hiking experience, head to Rock Dunder Nature Reserve . Most hikes in the area, while pretty, do not offer anything close to the views from atop Rock Dunder.

The trail to the top is a very moderate 1.5-3 hour loop hike. However, there are some steep sections so good footwear is recommended. Near the top, you’ll be greeted by a cooling breeze atop a giant rolling rock face where trees no longer grow.

Choose your own rocky outcrop to sit on and enjoy the views of Whitefish Lake far below. You might spot some turkey vultures riding thermals overhead.

After a relaxing break, hike to the cabin at the bottom of the hill (you may have already seen this depending on which direction you hiked in).

At this point, the trail loops right to the parking lot. However, a “secret” spot looms for the adventurous. Turn left at the bottom of the hill and you will see another smaller loop that includes a small jumping rock.

Across the bay, there is a larger jumping rock with a climbing rope and an access path. You don’t have to jump – but you can still enjoy a refreshing swim so it is wise to bring a bathing suit and towel.

After a great hike and a cooling swim, you will have checked off the list one of the best day trips that the Kingston area has to offer.

Kayak or Bike to Explore Wolfe Island

navigate map Distance from Kingston:  20 minutes via ferry to Marysville from downtown Kingston

wolfe island ferry crossing water with wooden pier in front.

For the fit and/or the ambitious visitors to Kingston, a great day trip is to choose a calm, sunny day and push yourself to your paddling best.

You can rent kayaks from Ahoy Rentals located on the shoreline of downtown Kingston. They’ll set you up with all the right gear and make sure the conditions are safe for your skill level.

At your own pace, navigate the channel between the Kingston waterfront and Wolfe Island – the largest island in the area. It is about 1-2 hours of kayaking to get to Wolfe Island (depending on the wind).

Upon arrival, treat yourself with a bite at the Wolfe Island Grill in the small town of Marysville (where the Wolfe Island Ferry arrives/departs). The burger with watermelon salad is incredible.

Park your boats on shore, walk the historic town and visit the Fargo General Store, check out the Wolfe Island Bakery , and go for a dip at the docks.

For those that prefer biking, rent a bike from Ahoy and board the Wolfe Island Ferry . When you arrive, bike to Big Sandy Bay (a great beach about one hour from Marysville) and enjoy the sun and the blue water. Remember the entrance fee is cash only!

Pontoon Boat the Famous 1000 Islands

navigate map Distance from Kingston:  Depends on where you rent from – you can be at a rental dock in as little as 15 minutes driving or 30 minutes driving (closer to Gananoque).

blue water with green trees on rocky islands on each side in the 1000 islands region.

Having spent a decade’s worth of summers in Kingston, this may be Chris’ favourite experience.

There’s always something new to discover in the Thousand Islands region of St. Lawrence: the turquoise water, the rocky patches of trees, and the aging cottages to admire. This uniqueness makes it perfect for a day cruise.

Depending on where you want to launch from, you can rent a pontoon boat from HP Powersports or Treasure Island Marina . Once you’re on the water, the waterway and her islands are your playgrounds!

Check out Camelot Island (sites #1 and 2), as well as any of the other endless spectacular islands.

There are several other landmarks like the Statue of St. Lawrence (only visible by boat), the 1000 Islands International Bridge, and the famously beautiful Boldt Castle and Yacht House which you can cruise past or choose to visit.

If you have extra time, it is worth stopping into the cute town of Ivy Lea and eating at the restaurant on the marina. Again, the water in the area is crystal clear, turquoise, and perfect for swimming.

You can also book a 1000 cruise from Kingston if you don’t want to rent a boat and you’re looking for a relaxing yet entertaining few hours out on the water.

Lake Hop Through the Rideau Canal

navigate map Distance from Kingston:  45 minutes to Lake Opinicon, 35 minutes to Seeley’s Bay

closed lock with water rushing through and lake with green trees behind.

If you’re still searching for ways to get out on the water, you could always lake hop on parts of the Rideau Canal

Kingston is connected to Ottawa via the Rideau Canal – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – comprising over 45 locks.

This Rideau Canal system is prettiest in the section from Kingston to Smiths Falls – particularly the area near Jones Falls (with its Stone Arch Dam) and Lake Opinicon. We even mentioned this route in our post on Ontario summer activities !

So, you can rent a pontoon boat from Sunny Acres Resort and Marina in Seeley’s Bay or Skycroft on Lake Opinicon and then just cruise the water system for a day!

With a boat, you can experience true freedom with personalized and free lock service to transition you between lakes. Lake hopping to your heart’s desire, enjoying a picnic on an uninhabited island or swimming are all fair game for a day like this!

If you drove north to hop onto a rented boat, you could stop just north of Kingston at the Kingston Mills Locks (Locks 46 through 49) on the way home.

Here, at the end of the Rideau Canal, you can park and see the locks from a different perspective. You might even enjoy a picnic dinner by the lakefront at Colonel By Lake.

Discover Historic Gananoque

navigate map Distance from Kingston:  30 minutes driving from Kingston

Known as the “Gateway to the Thousand Islands,” a visit to Gananoque makes a simple yet full-day trip from Kingston.

Because of its location right on the mighty St. Lawrence River, Gananoque is a popular spot for beginning a 1000 Islands boat cruise. The local operator is Gan Boat Line and they have been cruising those waters for decades!

Aside from the famous islands offshore, Gananoque is a charming little town with many shops, places to eat, and a lovely waterfront to stroll along. After a walk along the water, stop into Gan Brewing Company along the inner Gananoque River and enjoy an afternoon sip in the sun.

For lunch, pop into The Purple House Cafe for their pizza or Stonewater Pub near the water. Speaking of water, the 1000 Islands History Museum is right near the docks and is a stone’s throw from Joel Stone Heritage Park.

To get out on the water on your own, you can rent something to paddle from 1000 Islands Kayaking Co . to explore the area.

Stargaze at Lennox & Addington Dark Sky Viewing Area

navigate map Distance from Kingston: 55 minutes, straight north of Napanee on County Road 41

Want to see the northern lights in Southern Ontario? It’s an actual (although perhaps slight) possibility at the Lennox & Addington Dark Sky Viewing Area !

The area is in a unique position between Ottawa-Kingston-Toronto where it is just the right amount of distance away to be barely (or not at all) affected by light pollution. This makes the Viewing Area a great thing to do in Ontario no matter the season!

In summer, choose a cloudless night and bring your camping chairs. You’ll be treated to views of the sky – and likely see a few photographers and telescopes there, too! You might even kayak the lake before settling in for a BBQ dinner and watching the stars.

In the winter season, choose a cold clear night and consult the Aurora Borealis app for information on the best odds of seeing the dazzling green flashes. Even if you don’t see the auroras, at the very least you will be greeted by incredible stars.

Before stargazing in winter, this area is a good launch point for some of the best snowshoeing around.

You’ll find groomed hilly paths and snowmobile trails in the area – just be sure to check ice conditions if you head out on any nearby lakes. Who said there aren’t plenty of things to do in Ontario in winter ?!

Explore Charming Small Towns

navigate map Distance from Kingston:  Anywhere from 1 hour 15 minutes (Almonte) to 2 hours (Carp)

water channel with waterfall behind and old stone mill on the bank.

The area around Kingston is packed with small towns that are ripe for exploring. Whether you are interested in tasting local foods, exploring local history, or experiencing nature – there’s a small town for you!

Almonte , Perth , Carp , and Carleton Place are all small towns roughly located between Ottawa and Kingston. These riverside towns are packed with history – from old town halls and mills to being the birthplace of the founder of basketball (fact)!

Each has its own cute “downtown” area with colourful shops, bakeries, cafes, and waterside patios for greats or local beers with rushing water views. Carp even has a winery and a top Ontario attraction known as the Diefenbunker Museum !

There’s no better way to support local businesses than by checking out any of these eastern Ontario small towns. To be fair, these towns also make a great day trip from Ottawa if you’re looking for one!

In the other direction (west) of Kingston, Campbellford is a small town not to be missed. As the home of the “Toonie” (a giant replica of the Canadian 2 dollar coin), famous eateries like Dooher’s Bakery , and the Ranney Gorge Suspension Bridge, there’s something to see, eat, and do in Campbellford.

Fuel Your Adrenaline in Calabogie

navigate map Distance from Kingston:  Around 2 hours driving north

For the perfect Kingston day trip that doesn’t include a boat rental, head to Calabogie. This small town situated in the rolling Ottawa Valley is located north of Kingston. It’s also one of the places in Ontario to get your adrenaline fix!

Most notable is Calabogie Motorsports Park . This race track is a top speed circuit that you can enjoy in a few ways: with your own car, with a driving pro and their rentals (a Mustang), or as a passenger as a pro takes you out for a few laps!

They also hold motorcycle races which you check out – and even winter driving classes to get used to the wintery roads.

Aside from the Motorsports Park, Calabogie is known for its sprawling ATV/dirt bike trails. With trails for all skill levels – and local tours that will safely take you out for a fun day – it’s another great way to experience the outdoors and a bit of speed.

Of course, Calabogie is also home to a beautiful lake of the same name prime for paddle boarding, canoeing, and kayaking. There are also several hiking trails in the area like the famous Eagles Nest Lookout or Wabun Lake/Sugar Mountain Trail.

You can even make the day trip in winter with skiing/snowboarding at Calabogie Peaks Resort – one of the best mountains in the Ottawa Valley region.

Whatever you end up doing, go to Calabogie Brewing Company for a riverside beer and a bite to eat, or check out Oh-el-la for a cute café in the area.
