For one of the best waterfalls in Missouri, stop by Grand Falls on Shoal Creek. The natural waterfall is just downstream from a dam waterfall.

Welcome to my  Hometown Tourist Project ! Throughout the year we have been going all over the country and even up into Canada meeting new bloggers and their hometowns!

Hometown Tourist Project Week # 31 ~ Joplin, Missouri

If you’ve heard the lyrics to the famous “Get Your Kicks, On Route 66,” then you know a little bit about the town I call home. The song has had a little bit of a revival since Disney’s Cars came out.  After a couple of verses, the lyrics state, “It goes from St. Louis, Joplin, Missouri, Oklahoma City looks oh so pretty.”  And the list of places along the highway goes on.

Here is my list of the top things to do in Joplin MO:

Outdoors & Nature

1.  visit the grand falls.

One of my favorite things to do in Joplin MO is to visit the Grand Falls.

Shoal Creek winds around the Joplin area, and many people enjoy fishing or floating through Missouri’s beautiful woods.  At one point in the creek, the water descends into the Grand Falls. It isn’t a large waterfall, but it’s pretty.

My favorite time of day to visit is at dusk.  I love to sit on the edge of the creek and watch the water rush over the boulders. It’s a peaceful spot.

2.  Take a Hike on the Trails at the Wildcat Glade Audubon Center

Another favorite thing to do in Joplin is to visit the Wildcat Glades.

These trails are a great way to get close to nature.  There are several walking paths, and one follows Shoal Creek to the Redings Mill Bridge.  Some of the trails are paved, but for the more rustic among us, the glades offer unpaved trails.

The Audubon Center is especially focused on conserving the area habitats for migratory birds and other wildlife, so keep your eyes open along the trail; you never know what animal you may see.  It’s also fun to see the rock formations along the trails. In several places, the formations seem to make small caverns. Missouri is known for having many caves!

Part of the rails-to-trails project, this 5+ mile trail is a great way to get outdoors and in nature!

An interesting thing to do in Joplin is to visit the Route 66 Mural Park.

At the height of Route 66’s popularity, many traveled through town and Joplin’s downtown flourished. This park pays homage to that time in their history through murals.

5. National Cookie Cutter Historical Museum

A small museum dedicated to the unique tools made to make our cookies more fun!

6. George Washington Carver National Monument

Another interesting thing to do in Joplin (or near Joplin), is to visit the George Washington Carver National Monument.

Dedicated to Carver, who became a renowned agricultural scientist, educator and humanitarian.

7. Joplin Museum Complex

This complex houses two different museums. The Everett J. Ritchie Tri-State Mineral Museum , which houses one of the world’s best collections of lead and zinc ores.

This museum explains the geology and geochemistry of the area and demonstrates mining processes and methods used from the 1870s through the 1960s.

The Dorothea B. Hoover Historical Museum explores the effects of mining on the Joplin area.

On display are assorted historical items from Joplin’s mining era including a circus room, a child’s playhouse, a Bonnie and Clyde exhibition, a 1927 American LeFrance fire engine and Victorian furnishings, textiles and a doll collection.

This is one of my favorite things to do in Joplin and definitely one of my favorite places to eat.  This is actually a chain–there are three. Two are in the immediate area, and one is across the state line in Kansas.  

Now, this isn’t authentic Mexican food. In fact, it’s probably not even authentic Tex-Mex, but I love it’s cheesy goodness.  Not just the decor, but the cheese itself.

The queso is a family-favorite, and it makes a perfect topping for my cheese enchilada.  You may be detecting a bit of a cheese theme, and you’d be right. If you love cheese, this is your place. I actually only order a cheese enchilada and rice when I come, but they have plenty of familiar favorites, including tacos, fajitas, and chimichangas.  I love the flavor of the salsa, too. It’s not spicy, but it has a nice garlic-tomato taste. You also get a scoop of warm spoonbread with your entree.

Another local favorite! Housed in a 100+ years old building, the Red Onion Cafe has been an important part of Joplin’s historical downtown for 25+ years.

Whether you’re looking for coffee or some delicious sweets, you’ll want to head over to “ sweet ” Caroline’s.

12.  see a double feature at the 66 drive-in.

Cost: $4-$8/person

Nothing says summer quite like a night at the drive-in.  Joplin is lucky to have one of the few remaining drive-in theaters in the country nearby.  Technically, the drive-in is right outside of Joplin along old Route 66.

At dusk, pull your car into a space in the front row.  Or back your truck or SUV and sit in the back. Many people even bring lawn chairs. There is playground equipment at the front, just like you remember.  Tune in the radio, and watch two movies for cheaper than one at the regular theater. Hit up the snack bar between movies, and enjoy your evening under the stars.  It doesn’t get much better than this.

13.  See the Spooklight

This one seems strange, but I promise it’s a real thing.  Just Google the Spooklight of Joplin, and you will see what I mean. Sometimes it’s called the Hornet Spooklight because it is near the village of Hornet.  

The Spooklight is a mysterious light that appears on the crest of a hill on Spooklight Road. At least that’s where I’ve always seen it. Other people claim that the light moves around more, but I have never seen it in another location.  In the picture, it’s white light on the road, not the light on the cell tower.

When I was in high school, we used to go to Spooklight Road often. Bak then, the road was gravel, and the cell tower wasn’t there. Still, the Spooklight phenomenon remains, and no one can explain it.  Many have tried, but nothing is conclusive.

If you drive towards it, it vanishes. Most people seem to think it’s headlight reflection, but the legend of the Spooklight originates well before there were cars. Some say it’s a Civil War soldier looking for his head, and others say it’s a father looking for his runaway daughter with a lantern.  

Whatever it is, it’s fun to sit along the road, beginning at dusk, and wait for it to appear. Just be sure to stay on the road and not go onto private property. One of the unique things to do in Joplin MO is Sandstone Gardens. Sandstone Gardens is a unique shopping experience. They sell home and garden accents and accessories on a beautiful estate.

They also have the Sandstone Bistro which is worth the drive for lunch!

15. Bonnie & Clyde’s Joplin Apartment Hideaway

Address: 299 W 34th St #201

One of the more unusual things to do in Joplin MO is to see the garage apartment hideout for Bonnie and Clyde and the Barrow gang.

This apartment has become an historic landmark, marking the infamous shootout in April of 1933.

Grand Falls, the largest continuously running waterfall in Missouri, is right here in Joplin. Hike the arid terrain of a rare chert glade ecosystem at Shoal Creek Conservation Education Center in Wildcat Park. Get lost in thought as you meander through the thick woods at George Washington Carver National Monument . These unspoiled attractions offer a glimpse of the alluring Ozark region that surrounds Joplin.

Get your kicks cruising iconic Route 66 , which cuts through the heart of downtown Joplin. Want to explore it from the back of a bike? Check out the motorcycles at Hideout Harley-Davidson , Joplin’s impressive 40,000-square-foot showroom and dealership.

If your vision of Rock 'n' Roll is simply having a good time, Joplin has plenty of ways to do that. What do paintball, laser tag, axe throwing, and puzzle-solving your way out of an escape room have in common? They are activities that take you out of your everyday routine, activities that stretch your imagination and creativity, and introduce playfulness in unexpected ways.

Get Outside

Sometimes we’ll have a stretch of 60-degree weather in January, and that’s when we appreciate the fact that Joplin’s Schifferdecker Golf Course is open year-round, and that our city has 21 parks to explore. Bring your pet to the dog park at Parr Hill Park, or sit and reflect in the Butterfly Garden and Overlook at Cunningham Park, which was redesigned and rebuilt after being destroyed by an EF5 tornado in 2011.

If you’re an outdoor fitness enthusiast, or if you just enjoy a nice walk in nature, you can choose from several area trails to hike or bike. Get playful and combine your outing on the trail with a game of geocaching.

In the heat of our southwest Missouri summer, rent a canoe from Water’s Edge and cool off by taking a float trip down Shoal Creek, or float on the city’s own lazy river at the Joplin Aquatic Center.

Joplin offers a variety of indoor recreation options, too. From bouncing on inflatables, playing laser tag , and exploring the video games at the arcade , there’s fun to be had in Joplin, whatever the weather.

A Cave-Hopping Adventure

Who it’s for: Spelunkers and geology fans Why it’s great: Missouri’s karst topography means we have plenty of underground wonders worth exploring nearby. Must-do list : Fantastic Caverns ( 4872 N. Talking Rocks Cavern

It takes about an hour to trek all the way through Talking Rocks Cavern on this guided tour across wooden boardwalks and concrete stairs, and it’s worth every step. Tour guides focus on educating visitors on the history and geology of the cave as you walk through and spy a variety of incredible formations.

Marvel Cave at Silver Dollar City

A tour of Marvel Cave, which sits underneath  Silver Dollar City, takes visitors down about 500 feet below the surface on a one-hour guided trek. You’ll see a massive  cathedral room and lots of cool formations in this wet limestone cave. As you learn about the  colorful history of the cave and the park, you’ll get a thigh workout because there are a ton  of stairs here!

Smallin Civil War Cave With its super-wide mouth, Smallin Civil War Cave has one of the prettiest entrances around. Make sure you visit after a rain, so you can see a stream trickling over the rocks and out of the mouth of the cave. A guided tour filled with information about the area’s indigenous  people and the cave’s history takes visitors along a boardwalk for an easy and flat trek.

Fantastic Caverns This is the only cave on our list where you ride through on a Jeep-pulled tram instead of walking through. That means it’s great for  visitors who might struggle on an hour-long and sometimes steep walk. You’ll hear fun history (like how the cave was discovered by a local farmer’s dog) as you travel through wide spaces filled with stunning formations.

Lake of the Ozarks

Who it’s for: Cove-seekers and sun-lovers Why it’s great: This busy lake is great for the social boater to spend a day on the water. Bella Vista, Arkansas

Who it’s for: Lovers of Frank Lloyd Wright’s architecture (and The Music Man ) Why it’s great: The Park Inn is the last Frank Lloyd Wright-designed hotel in the world. Built in 1912, it has been a hotel, an office building, a strip club and then a vacant eyesore. In the early 2000s, The Park Inn underwent a 12-year, $18 million renovation to restore it to its Prairie School-style beauty. An adjacent law office, also designed by Wright, was incorporated into the hotel to allow for 27 boutique hotel rooms. There’s also a wonderful restaurant and downstairs lounge. But The Park Inn isn’t the only Wright-related architectural draw. Many of his students designed homes in the Prairie School style and they are scattered throughout Mason City. An easy-to-follow driving tour map is available from the visitor’s center. Mason City is also home to Meredith Wilson who wrote The Music Man . Grand Falls

Grand Falls is a must-see for anyone visiting – or living in – Joplin.

This natural formation is beautiful, so be sure to bring your camera. Bring your family, too, because Grand Falls makes an outstanding background in photos.

But Grand Falls isn’t just a pretty place to visit.

It’s also the largest continuously running waterfall in Missouri.

That’s, right! The water in Shoal Creek plunges 12 feet to a rock ledge.

What? Only 12 feet? Clearly you won’t need to crane your neck to see the top of the falls, but you are guaranteed a chance to see it flowing every time you visit because, well, that’s how a continuously flowing waterfall works.

Above the falls there’s a man-made dam. This was installed to form a reservoir that supplies water to Joplin residents.

The natural falls are created by a ledge of solid chert rock that measures 163 feet across, creating a Little Niagra Falls right here in our backyard.

There are outcroppings of chert next to the falls that fill with water and create pools that kids of all ages can splash in,

and explore to discover frogs and other types of life in the water.

Grand Falls is accessible from Riverside Drive, and there’s a small gravel lot where you can park your car. You can admire the falls from there, or you can walk the path from the parking lot down to the creek.

As you can see from all of the rock in the photos, the terrain is uneven, so be sure to wear appropriate shoes. If you plan on playing in the water (especially in the pools of water in between the rocks), I’d recommend a pair of rubber aqua socks because the rocks can be slippery.

Or maybe you just want to find a dry rock to sit on so you can rest while listening to the peaceful flowing water. Visit the falls at sunrise and treat yourself to the sight of early morning mist drifting off the creek while you sip some coffee.

After visiting the falls (which is on the east side of the creek) our family usually stops at Inspiration Point and  McClelland Park  (which are both on the bluff on the west side of the creek).

Inspiration Point is located near the intersection of Glendale Road and McClelland Park Boulevard. There’s a gravel overlook area where you can pull over and enjoy a breathtaking view of Shoal Creek.

Next to Inspiration Point is McClelland Park. This park is situated on top of a hill, making it a prime spot for kite-flying in the spring. There are several areas with playground equipment, plus a disc golf course that’s located in the south part of the park.

The many mature trees at McClelland make it a perfect place for a picnic, and there are several tables located throughout the park.

Here’s a table near the bluff that overlooks Grand Falls to the east. We visited the park on that spectacular fall day take photos to use in our holiday card.

 No, we didn’t use this for our holiday photo and, no, she did not push her sister off the table (surprisingly).

So take a few minutes out of your day to stop at picturesque Grand Falls, where you can enjoy the unique natural surroundings and recharge your batteries.

If you have more time, swing by Inspiration Point, then have a picnic under the trees at McClelland Park.

Grand Falls is located at 5400 Riverside Drive, and McClelland Park is located at Maiden Lane and Shoal Creek ( click here for its website and map).

Directions to Grand Falls:  Off I-44, exit 6; south on Route 86 (Hearnes Blvd./South Main Street) two blocks; at the roundabout go west (right) on Glendale Road 1.5 miles; south (left) on Jackson across the low-water bridge; west (right) on Riverside Drive two miles; and Grand Falls is on the right.

No, but Zan’s Creekside Campground ( https://www.facebook.com/Zans-creekside-campground-168724879814709/ ) is 6 minutes west, and Water’s Edge ( https://www.joplinmolife.com/waters-edge/ ) is 16 minutes southeast.

I would love to see the falls but I’m in a semi truck and doubt I’d be able to get thru the area.. or could I?

That road doesn’t seem semi-friendly, but I can’t say for sure.

I would like to take a ride with my women’s motorcycle riding group to visit Grand Falls. Is adequate parking available at the site (i.e., no gravel, off the main road, etc.)? Thank you.

I wish I could say yes, but parking at Grand Falls is not ideal. There’s a small unpaved area where you could park if it’s not crowded; we park on the street when we visit.

Debbie, Grand Falls is a public space so dogs would be permitted.

Is there swimming permitted?

As far as I know, you can swim there, but there is no lifeguard on duty. However, no one is permitted on the dam itself.

How accessible are the walkways around the Falls? I have a power wheelchair.

You can see the falls from the parking lot, but the trails leading down to the creek are dirt, and the rest of the area is comprised of rock.

I’ve personally never seen anyone kayak there before, but the Joplin Parks and Recreation Department would be able to give you information regarding that.
