Southampton

disney cruise norway iceland

Southampton is a port city on England’s south coast. It’s home to the SeaCity Museum, with an interactive model of the Titanic, which departed from Southampton in 1912. Nearby, Southampton City Art Gallery specialises in modern British art. Solent Sky Museum features vintage aircraft like the iconic Spitfire. Tudor House & Garden displays artifacts covering over 800 years of history, including a penny-farthing bike.

Stavanger, the oil capital of Norway, is actually a medieval city. Although it didn't gain city status until 1125 when construction of the beautiful medieval cathedral began, the area has been populated for over 10,000 years. The city is an exciting combination of old and new. Narrow lanes and white timber houses are all in well preserved traditional style, from classic style to funkis. It is a modern city with a wide variety of shops, cafes and restaurants. Contrast characterises this city, the people who live there, the surrounding landscape - and the weather! All this makes Stavanger a pleasant and very charming city. Stavanger is also the centre of higher education in Rogaland county. It has a number of cultural institutions including international, British and French schools because of the great influx of foreigners connected to the oil industry and to the "Emigration Centre for Genealogical Studies and Contact Between Norway and North America". The Canning Museum is the only one of its kind in the world and testifies to what has been an important industry for Stavanger. Among the many other attractions are the theatre and the symphonic orchestra that has its home in the beautifully situated Kulturhuset.

disney cruise norway iceland

On the shores of the Nordfjord, little Olden is a gateway to a spectacular ice wilderness of stunning dimensions. Climb an amazing zig-zag road past towering cliffs and tumbling waterfalls to the giant Jostedal glacier--the largest icefield in Europe, where summer skiers zip over ice moguls! Or take a horse-drawn carriage to a beautiful lake watered by the blue ice massif of Briksdal Glacier.

disney cruise norway iceland

Alesund is a port town on the west coast of Norway, at the entrance to the Geirangerfjord. It’s known for the art nouveau architectural style in which most of the town was rebuilt after a fire in 1904, as documented at the Jugendstilsenteret museum. There are panoramic views of Ålesund’s architecture, the surrounding archipelago and fjords from the Mount Aksla lookout.

disney cruise norway iceland

Reykjavik, on the coast of Iceland, is the country's capital and largest city. It's home to the National and Saga museums, tracing Iceland’s Viking history. The striking concrete Hallgrimskirkja church and rotating Perlan glass dome offer sweeping views of the sea and nearby hills. Exemplifying the island’s volcanic activity is the geothermal Blue Lagoon spa, near the village of Grindavik.

disney cruise norway iceland

Isafjorour is a town in the Westfjords region of northwest Iceland. It's known for its dramatic landscapes. The old town has wooden houses with corrugated tin roofs built by fishing merchants in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Westfjords Heritage Museum has exhibits on the town’s maritime history, including a collection of old fishing boats. The old hospital, now a cultural center, contains archives and photography.

Norway Cruise Report & Planning Guide

disney cruise norway iceland

If you’re planning to set sail on the Disney Magic for one of its Norwegian Fjords or Norway itineraries, this guide offers some tips and info to make the most of your Disney Cruise Line trip! In it, we will offer general tips for cruising through Norway and share suggestions for some of the ports of call included on Disney’s Norwegian cruises.

Basically, this post serves as an alternative to reading our 7-Night Norwegian Fjords Disney Cruise Report, with all of the planning information from those posts pulled out and presented here. If you’ve already read that, skip this–it’s over 90% redundant. If you have a surplus of spare time, you can read the full report via the links below:

  • Day 1: Transportation Woes & Coppenhagen Arrival
  • Day 2: Day at Sea
  • Day 3: Stavanger
  • Day 4: Ã…lesund
  • Day 5: Geiranger/Impromptu Day at Sea
  • Day 6: Bergen
  • Day 7: Day at Sea

Note that our 7-Night Norwegian Fjords cruise itinerary will likely differ from future years. For instance, I know that next year, Disney Cruise Line is going to Oslo, Norway and one of them is even overnighting in Iceland (color me jealous!). So, while some port info might be inapplicable, general tips and info about taking a cruise to Norway should remain instructive.

General Tips for Norway

disney cruise norway iceland

The first thing you should know about Norway is that it’s an incredibly expensive place to visit. Of the places we’ve visited, Norway is right up there with Switzerland as the most expensive. Everything from fast food to transportation to fuel and even alcohol costs significantly more money in Norway. Even a meal at a place like McDonald’s will give you some sticker shock in Norway.

This is something we realized while initially planning a non-Disney Cruise Line visit to Norway. Originally, our plan was to go in late November or early December, with the aim of seeing Scandinavia’s wonderful Christmas markets, the countries blanketed in snow, and perhaps even the Northern Lights. We found airfare from Los Angeles to Oslo that was absurdly low (~$250) that time of year, and also saw low prices on hotels (since it’s the off-season; during the summer, hotels are just as expensive as everything else).

After finding the airfare deal, I had done a ton of research into the Norway in a Nutshell tour, and also how to incorporate Stockholm and Copenhagen into our itinerary. We had held off booking that trip, primarily due to some hesitations about the amount of daylight, cold weather, and other potential schedule conflicts. Then, we stumbled upon a deal on Disney Cruise Line’s Norwegian Fjords itinerary that we couldn’t pass up.

A big selling point with the cruise was the included transportation, food, and (floating) hotel. Although Disney Cruise Line commands premium pricing, when comparing the costs of the entire DCL itinerary to what we’d pay to do it ourselves in Norway, it actually worked to our advantage to do the cruise. This is a definite selling point for Disney’s Norway itineraries, from our perspective.

We did quite a bit of research for this trip, reading a ton of blog posts and checking out several books from the library (the best ones were Rick Steves Snapshot Norway and Eyewitness Guides Norway ). Learning a few Norwegian pleasantries can be useful and polite, but most Norwegians know at least a functional amount of English.

disney cruise norway iceland

We’d highly recommend consulting those books for generalized background about Norway (Rick Steves also has a few episodes of his PBS show that we’d recommend watching), but the amount of generalized planning you’ll need to do for Norway is limited. Transportation, dining, and hotels are all non-factors when taking a cruise.

A couple of things that we do think are important pertain to packing. First, you’ll absolutely want a pair of water-resistant or (ideally) waterproof shoes. We both packed our hiking shoes, and we’d recommend doing something similar even if you don’t plan on hiking. Norway is a very wet country, and just walking around the cities can be unpleasant without waterproof gear (it rained for about 60-70% of our trip).

We’d also highly recommend packing an array of layers. You’ll definitely need a waterproof & windproof outer layer, an insulating layer (think a down jacket), and a moisture-wicking base layer. We’d recommend packing multiple moisture-wicking shirts, as well as socks. These items are essential for a cruise like this.

My recommendation for the outer layer is something GORE-TEX. It can be very expensive, but it’s made to last, and most brands that use GORE-TEX have generous repair policies. (I had my last GORE-TEX jacket for ~10 years and sent it in to have holes repaired twice…before I was finally “advised” that it looked “very 1990s.”)

In terms of general planning for Norway, that’s about all we have to offer if you’re doing a cruise. Now, let’s turn to port-by-port planning…

Port Tips: Stavanger

disney cruise norway iceland

In 1969, the first Norwegian oil field was discovered at Ekofisk south in the North Sea, which made the Stavanger region a key player in the Norwegian economy. The oil industry in the region has made locals and Norway quite wealthy in the process (Norway’s wealth management and fiscal policies are themselves fascinating, albeit beyond the scope of this report).

Today, Stavanger seems to be a blend of old and new, with a small town university feel and also features modern and old world charm.

disney cruise norway iceland

My top things were the Norwegian Petroleum Museum (yes, really–it sounds really fascinating!), Norwegian Canning Museum , Old Stavanger , and hike to Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) .

Based upon my research, we could do both museums and Old Stavanger, or Pulpit Rock and nothing else. While the museums sound fascinating, Pulpit Rock was the clear winner for me.

disney cruise norway iceland

Instead, I did some research and found what appeared to be a relatively easy way to do this hike on your own via public transit. That’s what we ended up doing, and if you’re visiting Stavanger on a future cruise, I’d highly recommend it.

Hiking to Pulpit Rock is a moderately intense, 4.4-mile hike with an elevation gain of ~1,000 feet. Despite Disney Cruise Line requiring guests be 12 years or older, the hike is appropriate for people of all ages who are physically fit to a reasonable degree. You will need hiking shoes, and I’d also recommend athletic attire and a hydration pack.

disney cruise norway iceland

From the ferry, Tide has buses that are synchronized, so it’s a simple matter of stepping off the ferry and lining up for the bus. All told, the ferry and bus take around 70 minutes to get you to the Pulpit Rock trailhead. From there, the hike is roughly 4 to 4.5 hours roundtrip (about the same amount of time up as down, albeit less intense down), plus however long you want to spend up at Pulpit Rock.

Due to the above time constraints and transportation schedules, it’s advised that you begin the descent from Pulpit Rock by 12:30 p.m. in order to make the last bus. Tide is one of two bus services operating at the trailhead–if you’re tight on time, you may have to purchase a ticket for the other bus. No big deal.

disney cruise norway iceland

These hypotheticals are unlikely. You should have an adequate window to make it up there whether you’re on the first or second ferry, so long as you’re in reasonably good shape.

Ultimately, I would highly recommend the hike to Pulpit Rock to anyone visiting Stavanger, Norway. I love to hike, and have done some incredible hikes in the Canadian Rockies, Yosemite National Park, Swiss Alps, and many other locations. I would put the hike to Pulpit Rock among the top 5 hikes I have ever done.

Pulpit Rock was stunning. The view from the top was breathtaking, with a panorama of mountains ahead and Lysefjord snaking past the mountain plateau. It was one of the most beautiful views I’ve ever witnessed, and it’s easy to see why this is such a popular hike.

The hike back down was not nearly as pleasant as the hike up. If you’re hiking alone and are relatively sure-footed, this wouldn’t be such a problem because you could pretty easily bounce around, but that’s not simple when you’re with a group. If you had an empty trail, I could see a fit individual making it down in a little over an hour.

Actually, although I indicated the hike would take ~4 hours above, that was a conservative estimate. If you’re in good shape and it’s a dry day, I could easily see making the hike in 3 hours flat. Add in the transportation, and it could be a bit of a tight day, but we had ample time to do a few other things after we arrived back in Stavanger.

disney cruise norway iceland

Instead, we wandered through the city, before stopping at the Norrøna store, which was about 5 minutes from the ship. After that, we headed to Godt Brød Bakery nearby (also about 5 minutes from port) to get some school bread…

Port Tips: Ã…lesund

disney cruise norway iceland

Following the fire, German Kaiser Wilhelm II sent emergency assistance, and dozens of out-of-work architects descended upon the city. Art Nouveau was the international flavor of the time, and the vast majority of the city was rebuilt in a Norwegian flavor of Art Nouveau. Ã…lesund now stands as something of a case study in the style, with it dominating much of the city-center.

Aside from just wandering around taking in this unique city (and also visiting the Art Nouveau Centre ( Jugendstilsenteret ) to learn more about it), we had a few goals for this port. First, Sunnmøre Museum . This is an open air museum with 55 old houses allowing visitors to step back in time as it showcases bygone culture and building styles. Oh, and it also has viking ships.

disney cruise norway iceland

Second, Aksla Viewpoint . Also going by the name Fjellstua Viewpoint, this is the #1 thing to do in Ã…lesund per TripAdvisor reviews. It’s easy to see why, as the photos I had seen from this location were stunning…and it’s free!

To accomplish the first and second items, we debated purchasing a City SightSeeing Hop-on Hop-off bus ticket. This company operates in most (all?) of the port cities, and we never ended up using them. We were dissuaded by some tepid reviews complaining of too few buses, but ultimately we learned that these are all very walkable cities. I’m glad we didn’t buy tickets for this bus, but your mileage may vary on that.

Third, the Majestic Island of Glorious Puffins. Officially known as Runde Island , I had read about the experience of taking a RIB Wildlife Sea Safari out to see these little birds . Doing a RIB (rugged inflatable boat) tour was on our list of things to do in Norway, but this ultimately did not make the cut for Ã…lesund due to a combination of cost (over $100), time, and alternatives.

disney cruise norway iceland

A ‘mountain drive’ might not sound particularly appealing, but there’s a good chance you’ve unknowingly seen photos of this–it’s breathtaking.

disney cruise norway iceland

I tried to rent a car in Ã…lesund so we could do the Path of Trolls ourselves. Not only would it be cheaper, but we could do it more efficiently and not have to wait for a group. Unfortunately, the Avis rental car agency in Ã…lesund was sold out by the time we booked the cruise.

Instead, we did the Disney Port Adventure, which we’d highly recommend. We’re both incredibly glad that we did the Path of Trolls. The tour was pretty efficient and our guide was knowledgeable and had a subtly wry sense of humor that was engaging.

disney cruise norway iceland

I’d avoid the version with lunch, but if you have no option, having lunch provided is not the end of the world. The buffet was surprisingly good, and–so long as you like salmon–you get decent value by Norwegian standards.

disney cruise norway iceland

The next stop was somewhere in Valldal valley along the waterfront, which was basically a stop for some photos, and a chance to get refreshments at a nearby cafe.

disney cruise norway iceland

After a meandering through Reinheimen National Park, we arrived at what I guess is the “peak” of Trollstigen, a visitor area known as Stigrøra. This area offers a sweeping view down on the “Troll Ladder,” its 11 hairpin bends, and the mountains in the distance.

disney cruise norway iceland

According to VisitNorway.com , it also houses a restaurant and the Trollstigen Road Museum exhibiting photos, models and hand tools from its construction. Our Stigrøra stop was only 30 minutes, which was a disproportionately low amount of time as compared to other stops and to the quality of this location.

disney cruise norway iceland

The view is unbeatable, and this is the place from where all the “iconic” photos on Pinterest, etc., are shot. This is one of the most dramatic mountain views I’ve ever seen, and is far superior to the lower viewpoint.

After this stop, we began our descent through the 11 hairpin turns of the Path of Trolls (or Troll’s Ladder)…

disney cruise norway iceland

Despite those tight turns, the Path of Trolls itself was incredible. I’ve done some of the best drives in the United States, including Going to the Sun Road, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Park Loop Road in Acadia, etc., and none of them compare to this. It was stunning.

disney cruise norway iceland

We continued on, with the next stop being at Troll Wall…

disney cruise norway iceland

After that, we began the 2-hour bus ride back to Alesund. It’s a scenic ride back, but after already seeing so much scenery, it might be better-used as some rest time.

disney cruise norway iceland

We vastly overestimated how long it would take to climb ~400 stairs, but it actually was only like a 10 minute commitment. It looks way worse from the ground. Gorgeous view–I just wish the sky were clear.

After that, we spent the rest of our time in port wandering around the city, mostly looking at the Art Nouveau architecture.

Port Tips: Geiranger

disney cruise norway iceland

Instead, we’ll share what we intended to do. The main thing to do in Geiranger was get back out on the water to get up close to waterfalls and go into narrower areas of the fjord. In other words, a scenic cruise that passes all of the famous waterfalls, De syv søstrene (“the Seven Sisters”), Friaren (“the Suitor”), and Brudesløret (“the Bridal Veil”).

The two main options, from what we saw, were kayak tours/rentals or RIB tours. We planned upon doing a kayak rental because that looked like the cheapest option, but had not booked this in advance for a couple of reasons.

First, a lot of the reviews indicated the rental companies would just cancel on you if they were able to fill their slots with official excursions booked through the cruise companies. Second, our top (morning) priority was hiking, and we weren’t sure when we’d be done with that.

disney cruise norway iceland

There were a handful of museums and other options in Geiranger, but nothing else that really piqued our interest. From our research, the highlight of Geiranger was the fjord, not the quaint village/town. To be perfectly honest, this was probably the port I was least enthused about before the trip.

Port Tips: Bergen

disney cruise norway iceland

Bergen was the city about which I was most certain when making our itinerary. Even though Bergen has a lot to offer, there was no real conflict or hard decisions that had to be made. I was pretty sure we’d be able to do everything we wanted to do in Bergen.

The first thing to do in Bergen is Mount Floyen and the Funicular . Literally, the first thing. “Rope drop” this; be one of the first people to get off of the ship and walk directly to the funicular.

Alternatively, if you end up sleeping in, you’re likely better off saving it until late afternoon.

disney cruise norway iceland

While up at Mount Floyen, be sure to do the short “hiking” loop that takes you out to the small lake. It’s a lovely, goat-filled trail. We spent around an hour up at Mount Floyen, but you could easily experience it in 30 to 45 minutes. Don’t just go up to see the view and immediately leave.

On your way there, you’ll pass by one of the other must-dos: the Bryggen Hanseatic Wharf. This picturesque series of vibrant, old-world buildings is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and you’ll want to spend time there later, particularly in the Hanseatic Museum and Schøtstuene .

disney cruise norway iceland

The Norwegian Fisheries Museum is exceptional, and provides a ton of insight into one of Norway’s largest industries. It’s not a huge museum, but features a diverse group of exhibits making it worthwhile for all ages.

disney cruise norway iceland

Our next recommendation is visiting Old Bergen. This is an under the radar location, and the only reason we went is because a friend told us that part of Spirit of Norway was filmed here. Officially called the Old Bergen Museum , it’s really more of a village than a museum.

It features 50 wooden houses dating from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries all reconstructed to form a small town representative of life in Bergen. We walked to Old Bergen from the Norwegian Fisheries Museum, but taking public transit would be more efficient. It’s not a pretty walk.

disney cruise norway iceland

We did this because (to us) a stave church is iconic to Norway due to years of seeing one at Epcot. This one is definitely neat, and in a cool wooded location, but it does take some effort to get there. It was rebuilt in the 1990s, so it doesn’t have the history of some stave churches in Norway, but it’s the only one we could see on the cruise.

disney cruise norway iceland

We also dined at BarBarista , to try Norwegian waffles. This spot is highly recommended for both its eclectic decor and it’s amazing waffles. Make a point of eating here. Once again, we also stopped at Godt Brød, the bakery where we bought school bread earlier in the trip. We had school bread here again, and it was fantastic.

One thing you might want to consider is the Bergen Card 24 Hours . This provides free or discounted admission to a number of points of interest (including some above), plus unlimited public transit. It didn’t quite work out for us, but if we tweaked our itinerary just a bit, it would have.

We made this recommendation before, but it bears repeating: skip the CitySightseeing Tour Bus. Bergen is easily walkable, and part of the experience is strolling past the storefronts and absorbing the old world charm. The hop-on, hop-off might seem convenient, but really, it’s just a waste of money.

disney cruise norway iceland

The Norway in a Nutshell “tour” is a self-guided itinerary consisting of various forms of trains, buses, and ferries that takes you through the mountains and fjords. This is how we were originally planning to see Norway, and when I had planned it out that way, we were expecting to spend around 5 days doing this tour.

The frenetic pace of doing the Norway in a Nutshell tour in a single port day was what caused us to quickly rule this out. Plus, we still hadn’t spent much time just wandering around any of the port cities, and this itinerary would’ve been another port day almost entirely consumed by one activity. By this point in the trip, we were already contemplating a return trip to Norway, and it made more sense to do it then.

disney cruise norway iceland

I’m not even remotely disappointed by our itinerary–we had an excellent day in Bergen. I think it’s more of a hindsight is 20/20 type of thing. I just mention those other locations to provide you with some additional options if you’re planning your own visit. Those tips for Bergen wrap up our Guide to Norway Aboard Disney Cruise Line; as we mentioned at the top of the post, your itinerary might have different ports, but hopefully at least some of this was useful to you, nonetheless!

We flew Wow Air in 2015 from Baltimore-Washington (BWI) to London. There were 7 of us (myself, my wife, 3 young boys, and my in-laws). I thought WOW was fantastic. We paid for a carry-on bag for each and because we needed to make sure we sat with our boys we paid to choose our seats. All the employees were very nice. On our return flight we were delayed for a while because of a lightning storm over BWI and the flight attendants handed out complimentary snacks and drinks (normally you pay for everything). You have to factor the entire cost (baggage each way, seats, etc) to decide if it is worth it, but since we had to buy 5 tickets (now 6!) we could not have gone to the UK without WOW. They were the best budget airline I have flown. We just went to California and flew Southwest and I would say the WOW plane was superior (although I like Southwest’s baggage policies better). Hope that helps.

' src=

Thank you for this, and Merry Christmas! We are doing the Norway/Iceland/Scotland cruise next summer. We got super cheap flights on WOW ($300 RT pp) to Iceland, then doing connecting flights to Copenhagen / London (which were also pretty cheap). Wondering if you have flown with them?

' src=

We have not, and we are slightly weary as the reviews are a bit hit or miss. It looks like if you pack lightly, you can save a lot of money, though!

Guest Trip Report: 10 Night Norwegian Fjords and Iceland on the Disney Magic, Day 2

October 29, 2018 by Disney Cruise Mom Leave a Comment

This is a guest trip report written by Carol, who sailed on the most recent 10 night cruise to the Norwegian Fjords and Iceland on the Disney Magic on August 16, 2018.  You can start the trip report from the beginning by clicking here .

Day 2: Kristiansand, Norway

Day two lead us to Kristiansand – our first stop on the cruise and our first stop in Norway!  After 3 days in Copenhagen and a busy first day on board, we had to get going right away for our first excursion .  Our first excursion was a Disney excursion – “Lillesand by Land & Sea (KR01)” .  We met in the Walt Disney Theater where we found out we needed to bring our passports (which was different from when we cruised in the Mediterranean and never needed to take our passports off the ship).  So, we went and grabbed our passports quickly and returned to get ready to disembark the ship for our excursion.  When our group was called, we disembarked the ship and boarded a bus.  We first took a bus through some of Kirstiansand and to the town of Lillesand just outside of Kristiansand, where we saw houses typical of the area and the small port area as well.

Typical houses in Kristiansand:

Small port area at Lillesand:

After the bus trip, we boarded a small boat for a 90 minute cruise on the inlet waters near Kristiansand and Lillesand.  The cruise was smooth (for those worried about seasickness – as I was) and the scenery amazing! We passed by many small homes which we were told we used by many Norwegians as summer homes as they were right on the water and Kristiansand is very south in the country.  We also learned that if a house has a flag flying then it means someone is home and all are welcome!  The cruise was fun, informative and I highly recommend it.

After our Disney excursion, we still had time to walk around town.  It’s a really cute town with a really easy layout so it’s easy to walk and very easy to get to and from the cruise ship.  Tom Sheridan writes a really good walking guide of Kristiansand with highlights of the city and you can see it here.

We followed some of it – mostly due to time constraints.  We started by going over the bridge as directed and saw the new opera house while we did – it is so beautiful and you can see the reflection of our ship in it.

We then headed toward Christiansholm Fortress, passing by these amazing sculptures and beautiful water fountain on the way:

Christiansholm Fortress was really neat, you could climb to the top of a spiral staircase and look inside and the views from the back were just inspiring.  You could really imagine being there trying to defend the city (although that’s what it was built for, it was never actually used for that purpose).  They are doing construction on it now to fix it up, but it really is an amazing Fortress and worth taking the time to check out!  Our kids loved the cannons and liked pretending to play with them.

After the fortress, we headed to the Cathedral.  The Cathedral is just breathtaking, and right outside the Cathedral and down the street is a street of outside vendors who all sell homemade, local Norway ware so once you are done being amazed by the Cathedral, you can shop and pick up some souvenirs before you head back to the ship.

On our way back we had an amazing view of the Disney Magic:

Back on board that night our dinner was at Rapunzel’s Royal Table.  I was so excited to try this new restaurant on the Magic, especially after having experienced Tiana’s Place on the Wonder, and I was not disappointed!  We were lucky enough to have a table close to the front and the stage and that made for a lot of interaction with the characters.  This first night was Rapunzel’s birthday and the thugs from the Snuggly Duckling were throwing her a surprise birthday party!  They were very interactive through many of the tables, they were funny and it was a great time!  Rapunzel came around to every table and greeted everyone and took pictures.  They also put on a great show, singing songs, both from the movies and other ones.  It made dinner so much more entertaining!

All in all it was an excellent day!!!

Lastly, in emergencies, having a reliable communication method can be a matter of life or death, so it’s important to know which option will provide the most efficient and effective means of communication.

Phone Vs. Walkie-Talkie

If you’re trying to stay connected on a cruise ship, you might want to consider using a phone or a walkie-talkie. Here are some things to keep in mind when deciding between the two:

Understanding Walkie Talkie Features: Walkie-talkies are great for short-range communication within the ship. Look for features like multiple channels, privacy codes, and clear audio quality to ensure effective communication.

Walkie Talkie Range Limitations: One limitation of walkie-talkies is their limited range. Depending on the model and surrounding environment, the range can vary from a few hundred feet to a couple of miles. Keep this in mind if you plan to communicate with others who are far away on the ship.

Phone Versatility: Phones offer more versatility as they can connect to the ship’s cellular network or Wi-Fi. This allows you to make calls, send messages, and access the internet throughout the ship.

Cost Considerations: While walkie-talkies have a one-time purchase cost, using your phone on a cruise ship may incur additional charges. Check with your service provider to understand the roaming charges or consider purchasing an international plan for the duration of your trip.

When deciding between a phone and a walkie-talkie, it’s important to weigh the features, limitations, and costs associated with each option. Now let’s move on to the next section about Wi-Fi or cell service.

WiFi or Cell Service?

Using Wi-Fi or cell service on a cruise can be a convenient way to stay connected with friends and family. Most cruise ships offer Wi-Fi access throughout the ship, allowing passengers to use their smartphones or other devices to make calls, send messages, and access the internet.

However, it is important to note that the quality of the Wi-Fi signal can vary depending on the ship’s location and the number of people using it. In some cases, the Wi-Fi signal may be weak or unreliable, making it difficult to use for onboard communication.

Alternatively, passengers can also use their cellphones to make calls and send messages while on a cruise. However, it is essential to check with your cell service provider to ensure that you have coverage and understand any additional charges that may apply.

Communication in Emergencies

In case of an emergency, it’s important to have a plan in place to stay connected with loved ones on your cruise. Here are some tips for communicating during entertainment activities and shore excursions:

  • Carry a portable two-way radio or walkie-talkie for easy communication with your group.
  • Set designated meeting points in case you get separated during entertainment activities or shore excursions.
  • Use the ship’s onboard messaging service to send messages to other passengers.
  • Make sure everyone in your group has each other’s cell phone numbers to stay in touch.
  • Consider purchasing an international calling plan or data package for your cell phone to stay connected.

It’s crucial to have reliable communication options in case of emergencies or unexpected situations. Now, let’s explore the internet and Wi-Fi access on Royal Caribbean ships.

Internet and Wi-Fi Access on Royal Caribbean Ships

Internet and Wi-Fi access on Royal Caribbean ships is limited and can be expensive. However, staying connected is still possible if you plan accordingly.

The ship offers various internet packages to suit your needs, ranging from basic access for checking emails to unlimited streaming for those who can’t live without their favorite shows. It’s important to note that internet speeds may be slower than what you’re used to on land due to the ship’s location and the number of people using the service.

To make the most of your internet access, try to limit your usage to essential tasks and avoid bandwidth-heavy activities like video calls or downloading large files.

Now, let’s talk about cell phone usage and roaming charges.

Cell Phone Usage and Roaming Charges

Cell phone usage on board can result in costly roaming charges, so it’s important to be aware of your phone’s settings and consider alternative communication methods.

When it comes to cell phone plans, international calling can quickly add up, especially on a cruise ship where you may be in different countries throughout your journey. Before setting sail, it’s a good idea to contact your cell phone provider and inquire about international roaming packages or temporary plans that can help reduce costs.

Additionally, you can opt to use ship-to-ship communication options such as onboard messaging systems or walkie-talkies to stay connected with your travel companions without incurring any additional charges.

These alternatives can provide peace of mind and help you avoid unexpected expenses while still keeping in touch during your cruise.

Ship-to-Ship Communication Options

Using walkie-talkies on board is a convenient option for staying connected with your travel companions without incurring any additional charges. However, it’s important to note that walkie-talkies may not be as effective in certain situations, such as underwater communication or when you’re far away from each other on the ship.

In these cases, satellite communication can provide a reliable alternative. Many cruise ships offer satellite phones or Wi-Fi calling services, allowing you to stay connected even in remote areas. These services may come with additional charges, so it’s important to check with your cruise line beforehand.

Having access to reliable communication options is especially important in emergency situations, where staying connected can be a matter of safety. Let’s now explore the communication services available for emergency situations.

Communication Services for Emergency Situations

In case of an emergency, make sure to familiarize yourself with the available communication services on board. Royal Caribbean has strict emergency protocols in place to ensure the safety and well-being of all passengers. Communication devices such as onboard phones and intercom systems are readily available throughout the ship. These devices allow for quick and efficient communication with the ship’s crew in case of any emergency situation.

Additionally, each stateroom is equipped with a telephone that can be used to contact the front desk or request assistance. By familiarizing yourself with these communication services, you can have peace of mind knowing that help is just a phone call away.

Speaking of communication, let’s now explore some tips for staying in touch with family and friends at home.

Tips for Staying in Touch With Family and Friends at Home

When it comes to staying in touch with family and friends while traveling, two key factors to consider are internet access options and communication cost considerations.

Having access to the internet is crucial for staying connected, whether it’s through social media, email, or video calls.

However, it’s important to also consider the cost of communication, as international calling and data charges can quickly add up.

In this discussion, we will explore various internet access options and provide tips on how to minimize communication costs while staying connected with loved ones.

Internet Access Options

There’s Wi-Fi available on the cruise ship, and as a passenger, you have a few options for accessing the internet. Here are some key points to consider:

Internet Speed: The speed of the ship’s Wi-Fi can vary depending on the location and number of users. It’s important to manage expectations and understand that it may not be as fast as what you’re accustomed to on land.

Data Plans: Royal Caribbean offers various internet packages for purchase. These plans allow you to have unlimited access to the internet during your cruise. Keep in mind that the cost of these plans can add up, so it’s important to consider how much you plan to use the internet and if it’s worth the expense.

Connectivity: While Wi-Fi is available on the ship, there may be areas where the signal is weaker or nonexistent. It’s always a good idea to check with the cruise staff for the best locations to access the internet.

Considering the internet speed and data plans available, it’s important to also take into account the communication cost considerations when planning your stay on the cruise ship.

Communication Cost Considerations

Considering the internet speed and data plans available, it’s important to factor in the cost of communication when planning your stay on the cruise. Staying connected while on a cruise can be expensive, so it’s essential to set a communication budget to avoid any surprises when the bill arrives.

Thankfully, there are communication alternatives that can help you stay in touch without breaking the bank. One option is to use messaging apps that offer free text and voice calls over Wi-Fi, such as WhatsApp or Viber. Another alternative is to purchase a local SIM card at the ports of call, which can provide affordable data and calling rates.

By considering these options, you can stay connected without exceeding your communication budget.

Now, let’s explore another way to communicate onboard: using the ship’s phone system.

Using the Ship’s Phone System

You can easily make calls on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship using the ship’s phone system. Here are some tips to help you understand phone charges and troubleshoot any phone issues you may encounter during your cruise:

Familiarize yourself with the phone charges: Royal Caribbean offers both ship-to-shore and ship-to-ship calling options. Be aware that these calls can be quite expensive, so it’s advisable to limit your usage.

Check for phone troubleshooting options: If you experience any issues with the ship’s phone system, contact the onboard guest services for assistance. They will be able to troubleshoot common problems and provide guidance on resolving the issue.

Consider alternative communication methods: Instead of relying solely on the ship’s phone system, you can also use Wi-Fi calling or messaging apps to stay connected with your loved ones back home.

Accessing Voicemail and Messaging Services

To access voicemail and messaging services onboard, simply follow these steps:

Accessing voicemail and messaging services on a cruise ship is a convenient way to stay connected with friends and family. Whether you want to check your voicemail for important messages or send a quick message to a fellow passenger, the process is straightforward. Just locate the phone in your cabin and press the "Messages" button. From there, you will be guided through the prompts to access your voicemail or compose a message. It’s that simple!

Now that you know how to access voicemail and messaging services, let’s explore another important aspect of communication on a cruise ship: interacting with crew members and staff.

Communicating With Crew Members and Staff

When it comes to a smooth sailing experience on a cruise ship, one of the key factors is the interaction with the crew members. Effective communication with the staff ensures that your needs are met and any issues are addressed promptly.

In this discussion, we will explore the importance of crew member interactions, the strategies for effective staff communication, and how to connect with the ship staff to enhance your overall cruise experience.

Crew Member Interactions

If you’re unsure about crew member interactions, it’s best to ask for guidance from a staff member.

Building strong relationships with crew members is essential for effective team communication. As a crew member on a cruise ship, I have learned that open and respectful communication is key to a successful working environment.

When interacting with fellow crew members, it’s important to listen actively, speak clearly, and be mindful of cultural differences. Building trust and rapport with your team will not only enhance communication but also create a positive and inclusive atmosphere onboard.

Effective staff communication goes beyond just interacting with crew members; it involves clear communication channels, regular updates, and a shared understanding of goals and expectations.

Effective Staff Communication

Building trust and rapport with fellow crew members is essential for effective staff communication onboard. As part of our staff training, we learn various effective communication strategies that help us work together seamlessly.

One strategy is active listening, where we give our full attention to the speaker and respond appropriately. This ensures that everyone feels heard and understood.

Another strategy is clear and concise communication, using simple language and avoiding jargon or technical terms that may confuse others.

We also practice open and honest communication, fostering an environment where everyone feels comfortable expressing their opinions and concerns. By implementing these strategies, we can create a positive and productive work environment where staff communication flows smoothly.

Transitioning into the next section about connecting with ship staff, we also learn the importance of building relationships with our colleagues to enhance teamwork and collaboration.

Connecting With Ship Staff

Connecting with ship staff is crucial for fostering a sense of camaraderie and collaboration onboard. Effective crew member communication is essential for ensuring the smooth operation of a cruise ship. As a crew member, it is important to establish open lines of communication with your colleagues to promote teamwork and efficiency.

Regularly checking in with your team and actively listening to their needs and concerns can help create a positive work environment. Additionally, building relationships with fellow crew members can enhance passenger interactions. By working together, sharing information, and supporting each other, we can provide exceptional service to our guests.

Interacting with other passengers on the ship is also a significant aspect of our role, and it will be discussed in the following section.

Interacting With Other Passengers on the Ship

When striking up conversations with other passengers on the ship, don’t be afraid to use friendly gestures and casual language to break the ice. Making friends and participating in group activities can greatly enhance your cruise experience. Here are a few tips to help you connect with fellow passengers:

  • Attend onboard events and activities: Participating in group activities such as trivia nights, dance classes, or sports tournaments provides a great opportunity to meet new people.
  • Join organized excursions: Exploring ports of call with a group can foster camaraderie and give you a chance to bond over shared experiences.
  • Utilize common areas: Spend time in public spaces like lounges, bars, or the pool area, where you can easily strike up conversations with others.
  • Be open and approachable: Smile, make eye contact, and be open to meeting new people. A friendly attitude goes a long way in making connections.

As you start to make connections with fellow passengers, you may want to stay in touch beyond the cruise. Now, let’s dive into the next topic of sending and receiving mail and packages.

Sending and Receiving Mail and Packages

When it comes to staying connected on a cruise ship, sending and receiving mail and packages can be a convenient option. Royal Caribbean understands the importance of keeping guests connected with their loved ones, even while at sea.

Onboard, there are designated mailboxes where you can send and receive mail. Additionally, Royal Caribbean offers a service called ‘Ship to Shore,’ which allows you to send and receive packages while onboard. This service ensures that you can still receive important items or surprises during your vacation. However, it’s important to note that there may be restrictions on certain items, so it’s always best to check with the guest services desk for more information.

Now that we’ve covered mail and packages, let’s move on to the next section on using social media and online messaging platforms to stay connected with friends and family.

Using Social Media and Online Messaging Platforms

To stay in touch with your loved ones while on a cruise, you can use social media and online messaging platforms. These platforms offer a convenient and efficient way to communicate with family and friends back home. Here are five reasons why using social media and online messaging platforms is a great option:

Instant Communication: With just a few taps on your phone or tablet, you can send messages and receive instant replies, allowing you to have real-time conversations with your loved ones.

Multimedia Sharing: Share photos and videos of your cruise experience with your friends and family, keeping them updated and involved in your journey.

Language Translation: Many messaging platforms offer language translation features, making it easier to communicate with people from different countries and overcome language barriers.

Staff Communication: Some cruise lines have dedicated apps or platforms that allow you to communicate with the ship’s staff for any inquiries or assistance you may need during your voyage.

Privacy and Security: Most social media and messaging platforms have privacy settings that allow you to control who can see your posts and messages, ensuring your communication remains secure.

When it comes to language translation services on Royal Caribbean ships, they provide a seamless experience for guests from all around the world.

Language Translation Services on Royal Caribbean Ships

As a traveler on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship, one of the key aspects that can enhance the overall experience is the availability of multilingual crew assistance. Having crew members who can communicate in multiple languages not only facilitates smooth communication but also ensures that guests from different parts of the world feel welcomed and understood.

Additionally, the availability of language translation apps on board further enhances the accessibility and convenience of communication for guests who may not speak the dominant language on the ship.

Multilingual Crew Assistance

The multilingual crew on the Royal Caribbean cruise ship can assist passengers in various languages. They understand the challenges that language barriers can present and are trained in cultural sensitivity to ensure all passengers feel welcome and understood. Here are some ways the multilingual crew can help:

  • Providing language assistance during check-in and onboard activities.
  • Assisting with dining reservations and menu translations.
  • Offering guidance and information about shore excursions in different languages.
  • Resolving any language-related issues that may arise during the cruise.

Their dedication to excellent customer service ensures that passengers from all over the world can fully enjoy their cruise experience.

However, if you prefer a more independent approach to communication, there are also language apps available that can further enhance your ability to connect with fellow passengers and crew members without the need for a step-by-step translation process. These apps can be a valuable tool to bridge any language gaps and enhance your overall cruise experience.

Language App Availability

If you prefer a more independent approach to communication, there are also language apps available on board that can greatly enhance your ability to connect with fellow passengers and crew members. These language learning apps provide a convenient and efficient way to improve your language skills and communicate effectively in different languages.

With translation services built-in, you can easily translate phrases and sentences to bridge any language barriers. The apps offer a wide range of languages to choose from, ensuring that you can communicate with people from all around the world. Learning a new language has never been easier with these innovative tools at your fingertips.

So, whether you want to learn a new language or simply improve your communication skills, these language apps are a valuable resource during your cruise.

Now, let’s dive into the communication guidelines and etiquette on a cruise ship.

Remember to always follow the communication guidelines and etiquette when interacting with other guests and staff members on the cruise ship. Effective communication is essential for a smooth and enjoyable experience on board.

Pros: You don’t have to worry about monthly payments or accumulating interest. Cons: It may require a significant upfront investment, which can be financially burdensome for some.

Financing : Financing your vacation ownership allows you to spread the cost over a set period of time. Pros: It provides flexibility in managing your budget and allows you to enjoy your vacation ownership sooner. Cons: You may end up paying more in interest over time.

Payment Plans : Some vacation ownership companies offer payment plans that allow you to make monthly payments over a specified period. Pros: It allows for budgeting and manageable monthly payments. Cons: You may end up paying more in interest compared to paying in full.

Considering the cost comparison and the advantages and disadvantages of each payment option, you can make an informed decision that suits your financial situation and preferences.

disney cruise norway iceland

A unique Disney experience: Here's what you can't miss on Disney Cruise Lines

D isney Cruise Line is synonymous with family vacations at sea, so you might think that every Disney cruise in 2024 will be a good choice for families. And having sailed on every one of Disney's cruise ships myself, I can say the simple answer is yes, that's absolutely true. But some Disney cruise experiences hold an extra special place in my family's heart, and they've made me realize that certain Disney cruises can go above and beyond even DCL's usual family-friendly standard.

I'm thinking about when we met Disney’s "Frozen" friends in person on a Norway sailing or laughed to tears over dinner with Crush the Sea Turtle ("cha dude!"), or completed a 5K race with my daughter on Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay . That's why my picks for the best Disney cruises for families in 2024 are all about these kinds of extra special experiences, the ones that aren't just the usual level of Disney cruise line magic but will elevate your family vacation into once-in-a-lifetime "cherished family memory" territory.

Find a deal: Kids sail free: 6 cruise lines that let kids cruise for free

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

There will be no shortage of these kinds of opportunities on Disney Cruise Line (DCL) in 2024. From being among the first to visit Disney's brand-new private island destination to enjoying an immersive Pixar-themed day at sea to setting sail on the maiden voyage of Disney's newest ship , here are the Disney cruise experiences I think will go above and beyond in 2024.

1. Disney Magic to Lighthouse Point, DCL's newest private island destination

One thing my family looks forward to during any Disney cruise is a stop at DCL's private island, Castaway Cay. In 2024, Disney Cruise Line will unveil its second private island destination, Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point , on the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas. And I can’t wait to see how they plan to outdo the already incredible Castaway Cay experience.

Family cruises: 7 best cruise lines for families (and their 12 most kid-friendly ships)

Similar to when Disney created its Aulani resort in Hawaii , Disney Imagineers have been working with local artists and cultural experts to design an authentic Bahamian island experience at Lighthouse Point. Curvilinear buildings are meant to evoke scattered seashells along the shore, and a Bahamian Art and Culture Pavilion will feature special programs and local artists that celebrate Bahama traditions.

A special preview cruise to Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point on the Disney Magic departs from Fort Lauderdale in June 2024.

2. Alaska and Australia cruises on the Disney Wonder in 2024

When my youngest daughter graduated from high school, my wife and I asked where she wanted to go for our family vacation to celebrate her milestone . Her top choice was Alaska. In the summer months, Disney Cruise Line positions one of its smaller ships, the Disney Wonder, out west so families can take weeklong sailings from Vancouver to the "Last Frontier." Along the way, you can experience majestic wildlife and stunning scenery while calling on Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, and glacier viewing along the Stikine Icecap.

No hidden costs: 7 best all-inclusive cruise lines in the world

But that's not all the Disney Wonder gets up to! In 2023, Disney also began offering Australia and New Zealand cruises onboard the ship, and that will continue in 2023 and 2024. Disney Cruise Line has announced a new season of sailings in the region from October 2024 through February 2025.

The Disney Wonder is one of DCL's original class of ships, and with a capacity of 2,713 passengers, it remains one of the line's most intimate vessels. That's a reason to love it. Both the Wonder and its sister ship, Disney Magic, are especially great Disney cruise options in 2024 if your family is new to cruising . Far from being a drawback, the smaller size makes it less likely to feel overwhelming to first-timers.

3. European vacations on the Disney Dream

In 2023, Disney Cruise Line sent the Disney Dream across the Atlantic for the first time. The ship will head back to Europe in 2024 with summer cruises in the Mediterranean, Greek Isles, British Isles, Iceland, and Norwegian fjords. These are the best 2024 Disney Cruises for experiencing new ports of call like Valencia, Spain; Haugesund, Norway; and Hamburg, Germany, along with three Mediterranean destinations (Catania, Italy; Kusadasi, Turkey; and Valletta, Malta) that Disney will visit for the first time since 2014.

Make memories: Why a Holland America heritage cruise Is perfect for a multigenerational family vacation

In June, the Disney Dream sails from Civitavecchia (Rome) with stops in Naples and three different Greek Islands, including Mykonos and Crete. In July, the ship transitions to northern European cruises, including a 12-night voyage departing from England (Southampton) on July 24, heading through the Norwegian fjords, three days in Iceland, and an overnight stay in Reykjavik before returning to Southampton.

My family sailed on Disney’s inaugural Norwegian fjords cruise in 2015, and it was hands down our best family vacation because of the Disney-specific experiences no other cruise line can offer, such as Anna and Elsa from "Frozen" posing for pictures at a Norwegian Village museum in Ålesund.

4. Disney Cruise Line's private island trifecta on the Disney Fantasy

Many fans of Disney Cruise Line’s private island get particularly excited when itineraries include a Castaway Cay "double dip," i.e., two stops at Castaway Cay. But in 2024, the Disney Fantasy ventures on a seven-night itinerary that calls on Disney’s private islands not once, not twice, but three times with a stop at Castaway Cay and two visits to the brand-new Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point.

Splash zone: 50 best cruise ship water parks and private islands for kids

I love Disney’s Castaway Cay and have enjoyed so many relaxing stops to the island. I especially remember learning the "stingray shuffle" and holding stingrays during Castaway Ray's Stingray Adventure. I love that this 2024 Disney cruise will give families plenty of time to explore Disney’s brand-new private island destination on the southernmost tip of Eleuthera without overlooking a day at the old favorite.

5. Disney Wish theme park and cruise vacation

The Disney Wish is DCL's newest ship (for now), debuting in July 2022 and offering three- and four-night cruises to the Bahamas from Port Canaveral, Florida . The close proximity of Port Canaveral to Walt Disney World makes it easy to combine an Orlando theme park vacation with a Disney Cruise.

Know before you go: 6 things you didn’t know you could do on a Disney Cruise

Disney land and sea vacations are the best of both worlds for families with theme park lovers who want to go, go, go, and other family members looking for a more laidback experience. My advice is to head to the theme parks first, get tired out from the walking, rides, and stimulation, and then sail off on a four-night cruise to decompress. My wife and I enjoyed the most expansive stateroom ever when we sailed on the Disney Wish last summer and it couldn't have been more relaxing.

6. Themed Cruises – Pixar, Marvel, and holidays

In January, I had the opportunity to experience Pixar Day at Sea , Disney Cruise Line’s newest themed cruise, on the Disney Fantasy. In my review for FamilyVacationist, I called it an " overflowing toy box of fun " and I'm excited for more families to experience it on a Disney cruise in 2024. The cruise was packed with so many Pixar character meets, themed-activities, special shows, foods, and treats that some of it spilled into additional days at sea. In 2024, Pixar Day at Sea returns to the Disney Fantasy on seven-night Caribbean sailings from January through March.

Set sail: These 6 cruise lines offer the best themed cruises

Disney's themed cruise days aren't limited to Pixar, either. There's a Marvel Day at Sea on five-night Disney Dream cruises departing Fort Lauderdale from January through March, and when the festive season rolls around most of the ships offer holiday sailings with Halloween on the High Seas and Very Merrytime cruises.

I was so impressed with the Halloween tree in the ship's atrium when my family sailed on a Halloween cruise. Over the course of the cruise, the tree "bloomed" with spooky Jack-o-lanterns. In addition, Disney characters were decked out in costumes, there was trick-or-treating, and other special activities. And of course Very Merrytime cruises have a tree-lighting ceremony, Mickey and Minnie’s Holiday Party, carolers, special drinks and treats, and appearances by the guest of honor for the cruise, Santa Claus.

7. Disney Treasure Sets Course for Adventure

Last but not least, Disney Treasure joins the Disney Cruise Line fleet with its maiden voyage on December 21, 2024. Adventure is the theme for Disney's sixth cruise ship with spaces and entertainment inspired by "Aladdin," "Coco," "Zootopia," "Jungle Cruise," even "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea."

Before you book: Everything you need to know about river cruises in the U.S.

As a fan of the Magic Kingdom’s Jungle Cruise ride and Skipper Canteen restaurant, I can’t wait to get immersed in the kitschy 1930s adventure vibe onboard the Disney Treasure. The ship will sail seven-night itineraries to the eastern and western Caribbean and have a theater-in-the-round restaurant at the Plaza de Coco as well as a cinematic dining experience at Worlds of Marvel. Because these are longer cruises than those available on DCL's other ship in the same class (Disney Wish), you can experience two distinct shows in each of these venues during a voyage.
