Go Atop the Burj Khalifa

One of the main attractions for any tourist visiting Dubai is the Burj Khalifa , the tallest building globally. It amasses 160 floors and is 828 meters tall. While many visitors like to marvel at the dazzling skyscraper from below, you will be blown away to take the elevator to the 148th floor to view the stunning sights of the city. Also located on the 148th floor is the world’s highest restaurant, At.mosphere. Book ahead to The Lounge Burj Khalifa on the 152nd floor to reserve a spot at afternoon tea between 12:30 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Get Lost in Atlantis The Palm

Smell the Flowers at Dubai Miracle Garden

The floral scent of millions of flowers is an experience to behold at the Dubai Miracle Garden . It is home to over 120 assortments of sunflowers, marigolds, and petunias. There are literally over 50 million blossom arrangements on display in this immaculate garden. It holds the Guinness World Record for the largest structure made out of flowers. A real life-sized Boeing A380 is decked out in 500,000 flowers. Other floral arrangements include a mini Burj Khalifa made of flowers, a floral operating clock, and the stunning Heart Passage. Miracle Garden is also home to the Dubai Butterfly Garden, housing 15,000 butterflies from over 26 species. 

Walk Through the Alleys of Al Fahidi Historical District

Formerly known as Bastakia, Al Fahidi Historical District is an ancient quarter in Bur Dubai that makes you feel like you stepped back in time. It features a host of traditional houses, wind towers, museums, and galleries. There were plans of demolishing the historic neighborhood in the past, but in 2005, Dubai Municipality restored the area and declared it an iconic heritage site. In addition to guest houses and cafes, the Sheikh Mohammed Center for Cultural Understanding is also located in the historic district. 

Have an Adventurous Ride on a Desert Safari

Venture to the outskirts of the city for an adventure like no other on a desert safari. Marvel at tall red dunes in the Lahbab desert and enjoy dune bashing in a 4X4 SUV, the only way to explore the desert. This amazing experience can also be had in the Magrham desert as well. Desert safari rides usually last around an hour, and the best time to go is shortly before sunset so you can witness breathtaking sunset views, which are fantastic for photoshoots. Dubai’s Department of Tourism & Commerce Marketing (DTCM) is the official tourism board and government body responsible for regulating, planning and licensing the city’s tourism and hospitality industry.

The DTCM is headquartered in Dubai but also maintains offices in many of the world’s biggest cities (London, New York, Tokyo, Beijing, Moscow, Frankfurt, etc.).

Visitor Information Bureaus

Visitors to Dubai wishing to obtain maps, brochures, public transport schedules, and general tourist advice can visit one of the DTCM’s Visitor Information Bureaus. They can be found at the airport and several shopping malls ( Deira City Centre , BurJuman , Ibn Battuta Mall , and Wafi City Mall ).

Kissing is not a crime anywhere in the world. If they want visitors to feel welcomed they also have to respect other cultures and welcome them instead of trying to force theirs customs onto others.

After the recent arrest of the two British nationals for "kissing" in public. I urge everyone to stay out of Dubai.

Dubai is independent and sovereign state. Aliens and foreigners MUST comply and respect ALL UAE laws and regulations plus traditions. If they are not happy, they should stay out of Dubai.

The currency in Dubai is the dirham, which is shortened to AED (United Arab Emirates Dirham). One dirham is divided into 100 fils. The dirham has been pegged to the US dollar since 1997, meaning the exchange rate never changes. One US dollar is worth AED3.67.

Dubai is a cosmopolitan city and a diverse melting pot where almost all attires and cultural expressions are accepted. Swimwear is permissible at beaches, waterparks, public pools and spa areas but is not considered appropriate in areas such as business districts and shopping malls.

Dressing conservatively is appreciated in Dubai's historic neighbourhoods and places of worship. There are specific requirements for entering a mosque, like wearing clothing that covers shoulders, arms and legs – and headscarves for women.

Marhaba! Dubai is a warm and friendly city and you will come across many people who will greet you with a smile and wish you well. A handshake is customary, but do note it is typically accepted that this should be initiated by women.

Public displays of affection are best kept to a minimum. Holding hands is acceptable, but kissing and hugging in public areas is not permitted.

Alcohol is served in licensed establishments such as hotels, bars and specialised shops to those over 21 years of age. However, drunk and disorderly conduct and drunk driving are not acceptable. Use or possession of illegal drugs is also strictly prohibited.

Dubai is home to hundreds of nationalities and both Arabic and English are spoken across the city. Learning a few Arabic words can certainly make the trip more memorable! As you explore the city you're very likely to hear Russian, Tagalog, Hindi, Urdu, Portuguese and many other languages. Follow our detailed guide for a list of handy phrases.

Many medicines used worldwide are readily available in pharmacies and hospitals across Dubai, but as in most countries, there are some medications which are restricted or prohibited for use in the UAE.

The UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) has full details of controlled or prohibited medications, plus information on what documents you need to carry with you if you need to bring a controlled medication into Dubai. MOHAP also issues a permit to import medicines into the UAE, which you can apply for on their website .

While the permit is optional, it is strongly recommended to obtain it prior to your trip as it will help ensure you have all the correct information and documents. You must also bring your official prescription from the issuing authority of where you are receiving treatment. Please note you can carry medicines for a maximum period of three months. If you have any questions, or want to check the status of a particular medication, contact your local UAE embassy, or get in touch with MOHAP .

To tip or not to tip? The short answer is, there are no rules when it comes to tipping in Dubai. How much you tip varies from profession to profession, and is also largely down to personal preference. It is customary to offer a little extra in most cases, but it certainly isn’t compulsory. Everyone arrives in Dubai with their own customs and expectations, but one thing that's always consistent is the high level of service.

Dubai is one of the most visited destinations in the world and home to a number of record-breakers, from the world’s tallest tower to the busiest international airport on the planet. Yet for all the city's accolades, there are still plenty of misconceptions about the glitzy Gulf emirate. Here are 10 things you to know before you arrive.

You don’t have to be a millionaire

It’s regularly named one of the world's most expensive cities , but you can enjoy Dubai on a budget . As the city gears up to host Expo 2020, millennial-friendly mid-market hotel chains such as Rove and Hilton Garden Inn are booming. Metered taxis are cheap by international standards, and you can ride the metro for as little as Dh3. The city is brimming with cheap eats too, especially around Al Muraqqabat Rd and Al Rigga Rd in Deira . You can now avoid any roaming charges as well, with visitors receiving free Sim cards on arrival at Dubai International Airport .

There is culture

Contrary to popular stereotypes, there’s more to Dubai than shopping and skyscrapers. Look beyond the bling, and you’ll discover a rich cultural heritage that blends Bedouin, Arab and Islamic traditions . For a quick history lesson, visit the Etihad Museum and Dubai Museum and then head to the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding for a no-holds-barred Q&A session on Emirati culture. Dubai is not dry

Think you can’t get a drink? Alcohol is available in licensed bars and restaurants, which are generally attached to hotels (although exceptions include some high-end eateries in Dubai International Financial Centre and City Walk ). Most bars have happy hours – Nola has one of the best – and the legal drinking age is 21, so take your photo ID. Ladies’ night, usually on Tuesdays, means women can enjoy free drinks, while all-you-ca n-eat-and-drink Friday brunches are a Dubai institution . Visitors can now also obtain a liquor licence to buy alcohol in Dubai .

European Union adopts more favourable Schengen visa rules for Indians

Indian Nationals can now apply for a multiple entry Schengen visa with longer validity

On 18 April 2024, the European Commission adopted specific rules on the issuing of multiple entry visas to Indian nationals, which are more favourable than the standard rules of the Visa Code that applied to date. This new visa ‘cascade’ regime for Indian nationals residing in India who apply for Schengen (short-stay) visas in India will provide easier access to visas with multi-year validity for travellers with an established travel history, if the passport validity allows. 

According to the newly adopted visa “cascade” regime for India, Indian nationals can now be issued long-term, multi-entry Schengen visas valid for two years after having obtained and lawfully used two visas within the previous three years. The two-year visa will normally be followed by a five-year visa, if the passport has sufficient validity remaining. During the validity period of these visas, holders enjoy travel rights equivalent to visa-free nationals.

This decision comes in the context of strengthened relations under the EU-India Common Agenda on Migration and Mobility, which seeks comprehensive cooperation on migration policy between the EU and India, with facilitation of people-to-people contacts being of key aspect due to the importance of India as a partner for the EU. 

Schengen visas allow the holder to travel freely in the Schengen area for short stays of a maximum of 90 days in any 180-day period. The visas are not purpose-bound, but they do not grant the right to work. The Schengen area consists of 29 European countries (of which 25 are EU states): Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Finland and Sweden, along with Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.
