First Monday Trade Days is the largest free flea market in America. It is extremely popular amongst treasure seekers and bargain hunters.

The roots of First Monday Trade Days date back to the late 19th century when traders and vendors would gather on the first Monday of each month to sell their wares. Today, about 5000 vendors participate in the event and sell items like furniture, antiques, crafts, tools, and so much more! On First Monday Trade Days, you can literally find anything under the sun.

Tyler Rose Garden

Tyler, a charming small town in East Texas, is famous for its rose cultivation and is known as the Rose Capital of Texas. The Tyler Rose Garden is a horticultural gem that captivates visitors with its stunning beauty and fragrant blooms. It is spread over an area of 14 acres and is the largest rose garden in America.

You will find several other attractions for rose lovers in Tyler. Visit the Tyler Rose Museum. Tyler also hosts the annual rose festival called, the Texas Rose Festival. This fun festival occurs in October and has a Rose Parade featuring a Rose Queen, afternoon tea in the rose garden, and other cool events.

Helen Lee’s Daffodil Garden, Gladewater

Helen Lee’s Daffodil Garden is one of the best hidden gems in East Texas! This enchanting garden, named after its passionate caretaker, Helen Lee, bursts into a sea of vibrant yellow and white daffodils as far as the eye can see every spring. 

Situated amidst the East Texas piney woods, the garden covers several acres and boasts a captivating display of over 20 varieties of daffodils. Visitors are welcomed with a breathtaking carpet of flowers, creating a dreamlike atmosphere in April and May.

Helen Lee’s Daffodil Garden has become an annual pilgrimage for those in the know, providing a serene escape and a profound appreciation for the beauty of the natural world.

Love’s Lookout, Jacksonville

Love’s Lookout Scenic Park, located near Jacksonville, East Texas, is famous for its beautiful panoramic views of the Piney Woods. This beloved lookout point is perched on top of a heavily forested hill. It provides visitors with a great vantage point to view the natural beauty of East Texas.

The park is located at an elevation of over 700 feet and overlooks the beautiful Neches Bottom Wilderness Area and Lake Palestine Reservoir. The views from here are magnificent. Towering pine trees stretch as far as the eye can see. As the sun dips below the horizon, the lookout takes on a romantic vibe, making it a popular spot for couples. The entire area comes alive with vibrant colors in the fall.

Love’s Lookout is also a well known bird watching spot in East Texas. The scenic lookout has picnic tables, restrooms, and many other amenities. For anyone road tripping East Texas, Love’s Lookout in Jacksonville is a must-visit destination that captures the essence of East Texas’s scenic charm.

Starr Family Home State Historic Site

The Starr Family Home State Historic Site in Marshall is a significant landmark that tells the story of one of Texas’s most influential families. The site comprises four historic homes including the restored 1871 Greek Revival mansion and the 1857 Porter-Redford House.

Visitors can tour the estate and get a glimpse into the daily lives of these early settlers who played a significant role in shaping Texas’s history. The sprawling grounds are also home to beautiful gardens, a carriage house, and several outbuildings.

Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center, Athens

One of our favorite hidden gems in East Texas is the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens. The center offers a unique blend of education and outdoor entertainment. On a tour, visitors can learn about freshwater habitats in Texas and the importance of conservation while seeing marine life.

The center serves as an interactive museum and features a sprawling complex of aquariums and exhibits. You can also take a tram to see the hatchery, where you can see different species of fish being raised before being released into East Texas lakes and rivers. Visitors can also try their hand at fishing in one of the stocked ponds or take a stroll around the grounds and nature trails.

Update – The center is currently closed for renovations.

Shangri La Botanical Gardens

Located in the charming town of Orange on Adams Bayou, you will find Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center. The gardens are spread over 250 acres and feature diverse ecosystems of East Texas.

The botanical gardens showcase colorful displays of plant life native to the region. It is also decorated beautifully with pumpkins for fall and with colorful holiday lights for Christmas. The Nature Center also offers fun and educational programs year-round. Best part is that the garden is free to visit.

Athens Scuba Park 

Looking for a unique adventure? Look no further than the Athens Scuba Park in East Texas. This former rock quarry is now a popular spot for scuba diving and other water activities.

With clear blue waters, divers can explore sunken boats, planes, several other wrecks, as well as a variety of marine life. If you’re not certified to dive, don’t worry! They offer classes and gear rentals, so you can take the plunge and experience a whole new world under the water.

Aside from diving, visitors can also swim, kayak, paddleboard, or simply relax on the sandy beach.

Davy Crockett National Forest

Davy Crockett National Forest is our favorite hidden gem in Eastern Texas. Named after the legendary Texas frontiersman and politician, Davy Crockett, this forest covers approximately 160,000 acres.

One of the defining features of the Davy Crockett National Forest is its lush and dense pine and hardwood forests. Sky high pine trees create a charming backdrop for hiking, camping, scenic drives, and wildlife viewing. The forest is home to an incredible variety of flora and fauna.

Hiking and backpacking are popular activities within the forest, with numerous well-maintained trails to choose from. The Four C National Recreation Trail is a favorite among hikers, offering a challenging and scenic 20-mile trek through the heart of the forest.

For those who enjoy water-based activities, the Neches River, which flows through the forest, provides opportunities for canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. The river’s gentle currents and tranquil surroundings make it a serene place to paddle and cast a line.

Small Towns in East Texas

One of the region’s charms lies in its small towns, each with its unique character and history. Jefferson, known for its antebellum architecture and steamboat heritage, offers a glimpse into the past. Nacogdoches, the oldest town in Texas, is home to well-preserved historic sites and lush gardens. Palestine, famous for its Texas State Railroad, offers a nostalgic journey into the days of steam locomotives. But the region has several other towns which are worth a visit when sightseeing in East Texas.

Tyler 

Tyler, Texas promises small-town charm and rich history. Tyler’s roots date back to the mid-19th century, when it was known for its role in the cotton industry. Today, visitors are drawn to its historic downtown district, where cobblestone streets and beautifully preserved architecture transport them back in time. 

You cannot miss the enchanting Tyler Rose Garden, renowned for its stunning rose displays and annual Texas Rose Festival, which celebrates the city’s nickname, the ‘Rose Capital of America.’ Other popular Tyler attractions include Tyler State Park on the shores of Lake Tyler, downtown Tyler museums including the Goodman Museum and Museum of Fine Art, as well as the sprawling Caldwell Zoo.

Additionally, the city offers a vibrant arts and cultural scene, with street art, galleries, and outdoor festivals showcasing its heritage. Tyler is also home to two blueberry farms: Blueberry Hills Farm and Tyler Blueberry Farm. Our kids love picking the berries at the Blueberry Hills Farm in summer.

Henderson 

Henderson, Texas, is a charming and historically rich city in East Texas. Its history dates back to the 19th century when it was founded as a trading post. Henderson played a crucial role in the Civil War, serving as a Confederate hub and producing supplies for the war effort. Today, it boasts a unique blend of historical sites and modern attractions. 

But mostly, Henderson is known as a Main Street City and we thoroughly agree with this claim to fame! The Main Street of Henderson is a darling place filled with cafes, eateries, boutiques, architectural gems, and antique stores. Visitors can explore the Depot Museum, which offers a glimpse into the city’s past. Nature lovers will appreciate Lake Forest Park, known for its recreational opportunities. 

Henderson also hosts the Heritage Syrup Festival – a unique and fun event where you can see antique cane syrup machinery, marvel at classic cars, and listen to music performances.

Kilgore 

Kilgore, Texas is a city steeped in history, with a heritage grounded in the oil industry. Established back in the 19th century, Kilgore emerged as a prominent oil boomtown in the 1930s, with the discovery of the East Texas Oil Field. The city’s history and its role in the oil industry are expertly chronicled in the East Texas Oil Museum, a prime tourist attraction.

In addition to its oil industry history, Kilgore is synonymous with the arts. The city is home to the Kilgore College Rangerettes, the world’s first precision dance team, and their performances are a must-see. The Rangerette Showcase Museum, located on the Kilgore College campus, is dedicated to preserving the memory of these iconic dancers.

Another must-see for visitors is the classic World’s Richest Acre Park. This park pays tribute to the city’s oil-rich past with an impressive collection of historic oil derricks.

Palestine 

Palestine, Texas carries a storied past which is evident in its beautifully preserved 19th-century architecture. The city is a home to more than 1,800 historic sites, including the sacred Redlands Historic Inn and the iconic Anderson County Courthouse.

Palestine is also the western terminus of the Texas State Railroad, a heritage railway operated as a living history museum. This railroad provides a vintage train ride through East Texas forests and offers a thrilling experience.

Additionally, the city is known for the Rusk Footbridge, a one-of-a-kind pedestrian suspension bridge that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The footbridge was built in 1861 and is about 500 feet tall. It’s great fun to walk across.

East Texas is a peaceful refuge for nature enthusiasts. The region is renowned for its scenic landscapes, characterized by rolling hills, dense forests, twisting rivers, and serene lakes. The Piney Woods offer plenty of opportunities for hiking, birdwatching, and getting lost in the East Texas scenery.

Tyler State Park

Tyler State Park is one of our favorite East Texas vacation spots, especially in fall. The park is known for its beautiful autumn leaves, and visitors can enjoy hiking, fishing, biking, and camping amidst the colorful foliage.

The highlight of course is Tyler Lake. Boaters can take their boats out on the lake, and kayaks are available for rent if you don’t have your own. The swimming area is like a beach and great for families with small children.

The park also has a variety of trails, including a nature trail that takes you through the piney woods and along a creek. For those who prefer to relax, there are picnic areas with grills and shelters available.

Lake Livingston State Park 

Lake Livingston State Park is one of the best state parks in East Texas. It is located on the shores of Lake Livingston, a large lake on the Trinity River. The park has excellent fishing opportunities and you can easily snag catfish, bass, and crappie. Boating and water sports are also popular here, with a marina and boat ramps available for visitors to launch their vessels. 

Families can explore the scenic hiking and biking trails that let you get up close with the area’s diverse wildlife and beautiful flora. Seeking a nature retreat? Lake Livingston State Park offers campsites and cabins for overnight stays.

Daingerfield State Park 

Daingerfield State Park is located southwest of Texarkana in the beautiful Piney Woods of East Texas and is known for its spectacular views, especially during fall foliage season. The park’s centerpiece is Daingerfield Lake, where visitors can enjoy swimming, boating, and fishing.

The park also offers hiking trails that lead through the woods to scenic outlooks and a nature trail with informative signs about local plants and wildlife. For a unique experience, visitors can stay in one of the park’s historic stone cabins built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s.

Toledo Bend Reservoir 

Toledo Bend Reservoir is a massive man-made reservoir located on the Sabine River, straddling the border between Texas and Louisiana. It ranks among the largest reservoirs in the United States and is popular for its stunning natural beauty and excellent recreational opportunities. It is also one of the best fishing spots in East Texas.

The reservoir was created after the construction of the Toledo Bend Dam, primarily built to control flooding of the Sabine River. The reservoir has a vast shoreline and is surrounded by Louisiana on three sides. Texans can access Toledo Bend near Beaumont.

Toledo Bend is an excellent spot for bass fishing. You can catch a variety of fish species, including largemouth bass, striped bass, white bass, catfish and crappie at the reservoir. Many fishing tournaments are held here, drawing anglers from all over the country.

Apart from fishing, Toledo Bend Reservoir offers a wide range of recreational activities such as boating, kayaking, water skiing, swimming, camping, and birdwatching. The surrounding area has numerous parks, marinas, and campgrounds for visitors. One interesting fact about Toledo Bend is that it’s not just a recreational paradise; it also plays a vital role in providing water supply and flood control for the region. 

Big Thicket National Preserve 

Big Thicket National Preserve is your opportunity to immerse yourself in a truly unique ecological wonderland. Spanning over 112,000 acres, this preserve is home to incredible biodiversity of the region, earning it the nickname, “Biological Crossroads of North America.”

In heavily forested Big Thicket, you will find a variety of interconnected ecosystems, including dense bottomland hardwood forests, cypress swamps, longleaf pine savannas, and boggy bayous. The preserve is home to many native plant species of flowering plants, rare plants, birds, reptiles, insects, and animals like the elusive bobcat and American alligator.

A variety of hiking trails allow visitors to explore this ecological gem. The Kirby Nature Trail takes you through a cypress-tupelo swamp, offering a chance to spot wading birds and maybe even a water moccasin. The Turkey Creek Trail  is a long distance trail excellent for birdwatching, while the Pitcher Plant Trail involves sightings of the famous carnivorous plants that thrive in this wetland environment.

Sam Rayburn Reservoir 

Named after the longtime Speaker of the House, Sam Rayburn, this reservoir is a true gem of the Lone Star State, celebrated for its natural beauty and recreational opportunities.

Covering over 114,000 acres, Sam Rayburn Reservoir is one of the largest man-made lakes in Texas and serves multiple purposes, including flood control, water supply, and as a recreational haven. The lake is renowned for its excellent bass fishing, with largemouth and spotted bass being the most sought-after species. 

Aside from fishing, the reservoir offers many other recreational activities. Boating, water skiing, and jet skiing are popular on the expansive open waters, while the lake’s many coves and inlets are good for kayaking and paddleboarding. 

Wildlife enthusiasts will appreciate the diverse ecosystem surrounding the lake, with opportunities to spot white-tailed deer, eastern wild turkeys, and a variety of bird species. Birdwatchers flock to the area, particularly during the migratory seasons.

Martin Dies, Jr. State Park 

Martin Dies, Jr. State Park isn’t just a destination for outdoor recreation; it’s also a place where visitors can connect with the rich history and biodiversity of East Texas. The park is named after Martin Dies, Jr., a former Texas state representative and conservationist. 

One of the park’s most prominent features is the stunning B.A. Steinhagen Reservoir, also known as the “Dam B” reservoir. This 10,687-acre lake is a haven for water-based activities such as fishing, boating, and swimming. Anglers flock to the lake to catch a variety of fish species, including bass, catfish, and crappie. 

The park’s Nature Center provides educational exhibits and programs, shedding light on the area’s unique flora and fauna.

Sabine Pass Battleground State Historic Park 

Wondering what to do in East Texas for history lovers? Visit the Sabine Pass Battleground State Historic Site. This significant historical site is located near the mouth of the Sabine River in Texas. 

This park holds a special place in history, as it was the site of a crucial Civil War battle that took place on September 8, 1863. The battle at Sabine Pass was a remarkable Confederate victory, where a small Confederate force, led by Lieutenant Richard “Dick” Dowling, successfully defended the pass against a much larger Union fleet, thereby preventing the Union from gaining control of the vital inland waterways.

Today, the Sabine Pass Battleground State Historic Park stands as a tribute to this remarkable moment in history. Visitors can explore the park’s well-preserved grounds, including the historic earthworks and the Dick Dowling statue, which honors the Confederate hero’s leadership during the battle. The park also features informative signage and exhibits that provide insights into the significance of the battle and its impact on the Civil War.

Sea Rim State Park 

Sea Rim State Park is a coastal gem along the Texas Gulf Coast. One of the park’s most popular features is its undeveloped beach. Stretching for miles, the sandy shoreline is our favorite spot for beachcombing, sunbathing, and birdwatching. 

Sea Rim State Park is renowned for its birdlife. You can spot everything from majestic herons to colorful warblers. The park’s coastal marshes and wetlands are teeming with wildlife. You can explore these areas via the Gambusia Nature Trail. Our kids love seeing the alligators, turtles, and a variety of bird species up close. 

Canoeing and kayaking are popular activities here, allowing visitors to paddle through the tranquil waters of the marshes and witness the wonders of the coastal ecosystem. Fishing is another highlight at Sea Rim State Park, with opportunities for both freshwater and saltwater angling. You might reel in speckled trout, redfish, or even flounder. 

Mineola Nature Preserve 

The Mineola Nature Preserve has a diverse range of habitats. Visitors can explore pristine pine forests, wetlands, hardwood bottomlands, and lakes. This variety of environments provides a home to a wide range of wildlife, including white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and numerous bird species. Birdwatchers can catch glimpses of egrets, herons, and even bald eagles.

A network of well-maintained hiking trails and boardwalks winds its way through the preserve. The Azalea Trail, in particular, is a favorite during the spring when vibrant azalea blooms create a colorful spectacle. Fishing enthusiasts can cast their lines into the lakes, which are well-stocked with a variety of fish species. Kayaking and canoeing are also popular.

The Preserve’s Nature Center has interpretive exhibits and displays that inform visitors about the diverse ecosystems and wildlife found within its boundaries.

Sabine National Forest 

Sabine National Forest, established in 1936, derives its name from the Sabine River that meanders through the area, forming a natural border between Texas and Louisiana. This river, along with numerous creeks and bayous, is a lifeline for the rich biodiversity that thrives within the forest. 

Hiking trails offer opportunities to explore the forest’s beauty on foot. The trail winds through towering pine forests and offers breathtaking views of the Sabine River. Birdwatchers will be delighted by sightings of the striking red-cockaded woodpecker.

For those who prefer to experience the forest from the water, the Sabine River and area lakes provide excellent opportunities for canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. Cast your line and you may reel in catfish, bass, or sunfish. Sabine National Forest stands as a testament to the natural beauty and ecological diversity of East Texas. 

Ratcliff Lake Recreation Area

Ratcliff Lake Recreation Area is a hidden gem located in the Davy Crockett National Forest. At the heart of Ratcliff Lake is, unsurprisingly, a beautiful lake. The 45-acre lake provides numerous opportunities for water-based activities. Visitors can enjoy swimming, fishing, and non-motorized boating in the clear, spring-fed waters.

For those who prefer to stay on dry land, Ratcliff Lake offers a network of well-maintained hiking trails that wind through the lush forest. Camping is also popular at Ratcliff Lake, and the recreation area provides both RV and tent camping facilities. 

Ratcliff Lake Recreation Area also has a spacious picnic area, complete with grills and tables, for day use visitors. It makes an ideal spot for a family gathering or a quiet lakeside picnic.

Cherokee Trace Drive-Thru Safari

The Cherokee Trace Drive-Thru Safari is located in Jacksonville, Texas. This drive-through safari is a hit with animal lovers as well as families with kids. The safari is home to over two dozen species of animals, including zebras, graceful giraffes, kangaroos, emus, deer, and llamas.

After the drive-through portion, visitors can take walks through a petting zoo area and see baby goats, pigs, and turkeys up close. Grapeland Safari is a great place to visit on the East Texas road trip.

Texas Dogwood Trails Festival, Palestine 

The Texas Dogwood Trails Festival in Palestine, Texas, is an amazing springtime celebration. Each year, usually in March and April, the charming town of Palestine comes alive with the delicate and graceful dogwood blossoms. These iconic flowers, with their distinctive four-petaled blooms can be seen in a riot of colors from pure white to soft pink and even shades of creamy yellow.

I’ve lived in East TX for 23 years, never got to do everything on your list.

Saw the Balloon Glow in Canton, and the balloons launching the next day.

There’s more than antiques at First Monday in Canton… though I did buy Ford Model A headlights for my antique car.

Several small airports have fly-ins where you can see many small planes. Maybe even take a ride!

There are many places to put a canoe or kayak in the water. Did this most recently up by Princeton.

Last summer I waded in the North Sulfur River near Cooper TX and brought out petrified clam shells, millions of years old.

Most small towns host at least one weekend festival of their own. Check with their Chamber of Commerce for dates. Wills Point’s Bluebird Festival had local vendors, carnival rides, car show, etc.

Finally, the people I’ve met in East Texas are some of the nicest and most hospitable in the country.

How to get around East Texas

Like most of Texas, the best way to get around East Texas is to explore on your own by car!

Okay, everyone grab their best vintage Texas tee and let’s get going!

1. Visit Jefferson

Go back in history to the bustling 19th century riverport town of Jefferson .

A visit to Jefferson is one of the most popular things to do in East Texas, and for good reason.

Some of the highlights include the Historic Jefferson Railway tours, the Jefferson Historical Museum and the Graceful Ghost paddlewheel steamboat on Caddo lake .

If you’re visiting at Christmastime, the annual parade and festivities bring highly anticipated festive cheer to the whole city.

Even outside of the peak festive period, the quaint brick streets and horse-drawn carriage tours showcase the charm that makes this Southern city such a delight to visit.

2. Visit the Rose Capital of the United States

One of the top things to see in East Texas is the Rose Festival of Tyler.

If you visit the town of Tyler during October, you’ll be treated to the spectacular annual Rose Festival , a three-day celebration of the significance of roses in the town’s history.

But even if you’re visiting outside of the main festival week, take a stroll around the town’s grand rose garden , where over 40,000 rose bushes bloom from March to the start of winter.

3. Visit the Big Thicket National Preserve

For outdoor enthusiasts, the Big Thicket National Preserve provides an array of adventurous activities, set within the impressive setting of the grand cypress trees and bountiful waterways.

Whilst there are no official campsites, DIY camping is permitted so bring your tent and sleeping bag along if you like.

If you only have time for a daytime activity, you can choose from hiking, mountain biking, kayaking and fishing.

4. Take a ride on the Texas State Railroad

One of the most popular things to do in East Texas is to take a ride on the Texas State Railroad.

Since the late 19th century, the Texas State Railroad has been a key piece of infrastructure in East Texas, ferrying timber and other goods between the towns of Palestine and Rusk.

Whilst the Railroad is no longer used for ferrying cargo anymore, visitors can now climb aboard to take a scenic ride through the Piney Woods of East Texas.

5. Try your luck at Bass Fishing

One of the most popular outdoor activities to do in East Texas is bass fishing.

Playing host to three of the top bass lakes in the country, there are plenty of opportunities to try your hand at the sport.

Lake O’ the Pines is abundant with white, yellow, spotted and striped bass, making it a favorite bass fishing spot for both locals and visitors.

6. Visit the East Texas State Fair

Every September, the town of Tyler hosts the East Texas State Fair, a ten day family friendly celebration, complete with carnival rides, live music and livestock shows.

There’s plenty to see and do in the park so plan your visit in advance. You can choose to explore the Caldwell Zoo, the Historic Aviation Memorial Museum, the Discovery Science Place or attend a live musical show hosted by the East Texas Symphony.

There’s also plenty of food vendors and a farmer’s market to stock up on snacks to keep you energized.

7. Visit the city of Beaumont

The coastal city of Beaumont lies approximately 85 miles east of Houston, and plays an important part in Texan history.

Known as the site of the first oil discovery in Texas and the start of the Texas oil boom, there’s lots to see and learn during a visit to this historically significant city.

One of the key attractions is the Spindletop-Gladys City Boomtown Museum . A visit here will transport you back in time as you take in the historical replicas and period reenactments by talented actors, showcasing a snippet of what life was like in Beaumont during the early 20th century.

8. Alternative things to do in Beaumont

If you’ve got some extra time in Beaumont, or you’d rather explore more of the wildlife than the history, there’s plenty of other activities for you to choose from.

You can visit the Gator Country Adventure Park to see the three hundred alligators and crocodiles that call this park home.

If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of Big Al, the largest alligator in captivity. At nearly four meters long, he’s one you’ll want to watch out for.

9. Explore the largest flea market in the USA

One of the most popular things to do in East Texas is visit the First Monday Trade Days flea market .

The First Monday Trade Days is not only the largest flea market in the nation, it’s also got a quirky twist in its name because this market doesn’t actually run on a Monday at all.

Spanning from the Thursday to the Sunday before the first Monday of each month, this expansive market offers hidden gems for every type of treasure hunter.

If you’re in Canton, be sure to spend a few hours trawling through the stalls and you’ll come across vintage finds, from records, books to quirky Texan memorabilia. Giant carved bison skull for your wall, anyone?

10. Do a wildlife safari

One of the most memorable things to do in East Texas is the Cherokee Trace Drive-Thru Safari in Jacksonville .

This 300-acre nature reserve is home to a myriad of exotic wildlife, including the African longhorn cow, blackbucks, zebras and other non-native wildlife.

You can drive your own vehicle through the park on a self-guided tour and even stop to feed some of the animals that call the reserve home.

11. Take part in Tomato Fest

Did you know Jacksonville is also known as the ‘Tomato Capital of the World’?

If you’re visiting during June, you’ll hopefully get a first hand glimpse at why Jacksonville takes on the title of World’s Largest Bowl of Salsa.

Spanning four days of events, including a tomato eating contest, tomato peeling contest, the best homegrown contest and street dancing, this is a local celebration you should definitely get involved in, even if it’s just to take a bite of one of the locally grown red rubies.

Top tip, don’t wear white.

12. Visit the Cultural Capital of East Texas

The City of Marshall offers some of the most interesting historical sights to see in East Texas.

Not only is the city home to many landmark buildings, such as the Starr Family Home State Historic Site and the Harrison County Courthouse , the locals have also made a dedicated effort to preserve the grandeur of these architectural gems.

Take a stroll downtown and you’ll get to spy many of the traditional buildings that gave the city its unique flair.

Many of the buildings also offer tours so you can glimpse the artwork and structures from the inside. One of the most popular places of interest is the Harrison County Courthouse, which offers tours from Tuesdays to Saturdays.

13. Visit Marshall during Christmas

If you’re in Marshall during Christmastime, you’ll be treated to the largest Christmas festival in Texas and also the largest light festival in the country.

The ‘ Wonderland of Lights ’ typically kicks off in late November and includes a full calendar of events and sights to celebrate the spirit of Christmas.

Some of the events include the annual Courthouse lighting ceremony, the Christmas parade and the Outdoor Christmas Market that draws crowds from all over the country.

If you can time your visit to coincide, the annual Christmas parade is an extravaganza of lights, costumes and carols galore.

14. See a rodeo

A classic Texas tradition and especially popular in East Texas are the various rodeos held across various counties, most commonly from February through to May.

Depending on where you are and the time of your visit, there’s a range of rodeos you can choose to visit.

Some of the biggest names include the Kiss n Kick Rodeo in Seguin and the WPRA Elite Extravaganza in Waco , both held during March. If you’re visiting during April, you can book in to see the famed 1836 Chuckwagon Race in Palestine.

15. Visit the City of Uncertain

One of the most unique places to visit in East Texas is the City of Uncertain .

Commonly regarded as a place of mystery, the City of Uncertain is popularly referred to as the ‘best kept secret in Texas’. Along the shores of Lake Caddo, you’ll find a remote town of exotic beauty, vast wetlands and unique mystery.

Many of the biggest events and activities in the town are centered around the lake, from fireworks and parades to boating and fishing expeditions.

There’s also unique accommodation available, from cabins and lake-side lodges that will give you a true flavor of the quirkiness that gives this city its name.

16. Visit nearby Caddo Lake National Wildlife Refuge

Built for the preservation and protection of migratory birds and other wildlife, the Caddo Lake National Wildlife Refuge is one of the most interesting places to visit in East Texas.

With a vast wildlife sanctuary that is free to visit and full of activities, including horseback riding, biking, hunting and wildlife photography, there is plenty to see and do at the Refuge.

Be sure to stop in to the visitors center to learn more about the important work carried out by the Refuge in conserving the local and native wildlife that resides in the sanctuary.

17. Visit the oldest town in Texas

Nacogdoches is not only the oldest town in Texas, but also a celebration of the unique blend of American history, Spanish architecture and Southern charm that makes up this historical community.

Originally a Spanish settlement, there are plenty of activities on offer to give you an insight to the history of the town, such as the Henderson Oil Field Tour and a visit to Millard’s Crossing Historical Village.

If you’re happy to simply roam the town at your own leisurely pace, you can enjoy the Victorian-style architecture and the red brick streets in downtown.

18. Visit Athens Scuba Park

With more than twenty sunken dive wrecks to explore, Athens Scuba Park is a true wonderland for divers and scuba aficionados, making a visit to Athens Scuba Park one of the most fun things to do in East Texas.

This world class diving site attracts visitors from all over the world for its all inclusive dive facility that offers classes, PADI certifications and its very own private jet fit for ten people.

19. Visit Shelby County

One of the most popular things to do in East Texas is visit the gateway to Texas forest country, also known as Shelby .

Encompassing various natural reserves and lakes, there are plenty of activities for travelers of all ages and interests.

You can choose to go camping at Lake Pinkston or the Toledo Best Reservoir , or go fishing, hunting or biking at the Sabine National Forest .

Keep an eye out for some spectacular local wildlife too, from the beautiful water fowl and the songbirds.

20. Play a round of golf at Coldspring

For a fun day out in East Texas, spend an afternoon on one of the twenty-five golf courses surrounding Coldspring .

There are both private and public golf courses, including some with grand country clubs that offer a luxurious break away from the course.

The oldest course and one of the most popular is the Livingston Municipal Golf Course which is 6,108 yards and is located approximately fifteen miles away from the center of Coldspring.

21. Attend the Edom Festival

Running annually since 1972, this festival of art is an annual celebration in the craft community of Edom, Texas.

Originally sponsored by the 279 Artisans Trail to support local artists, the celebrations include antique shows, art shows, hot rod car shows and craft demonstrations.

The trail also includes a number of nurseries, boutiques, spas and restaurants that you can explore at your own leisurely pace.

You can also try unique local food from the many vendors that participate, including the Cajun gumbo, corn dogs and locally made gourmet ice cream.

22. Angelina National Forest

This national forest is where you’ll find your inner peace, get your steps in on the hiking trails, or reconnect with nature with over 100,000 acres of recreational areas.

Birdwatchers absolutely love this national forest, and fishermen can check out the incredible lake with lots of things to catch.

There are marked trails for hiking so you can plan out your day!

23. Davy Crockett National Forest

The Davy Crockett National Forest actually became a National Forest in 1936 and has been providing a family-friendly place to become one with nature ever since.

Put on your hiking boots and walk all around the forest, or go fishing in the lake or enjoy a swim at Ratcliff Lake.

It was named for none other than of course, Davy Crocket, an icon of the “wild frontier” and you can even go primitive camping if you want to really get back to the basics.

Hiking lovers will enjoy the view from the Four C National Recreation Trail, and you can even go horseback riding on Piney Creek Horse Trail.

Keep an eye out for that wildlife, including turkeys, deer, and woodpeckers!

Make sure to “leave no trace” of your visit and take trash with you when you leave.

24. Texarkana, Arkansas (and Texas)

Texarkana , so named because it combines Texas and Arkansas, is a fantastic place to go if you want to be in two states at once.

Downtown Texarkana is walkable and historic, and while you’re there you’ve got to head to the Ace of Clubs House .

This House, built in 1885, is shaped like a playing card club and is a must-see.

There’s also other things to do, like the Museum of Regional History and the Four States Auto Museum.

If you’re hungry, stop at Zapata’s for some incredible guacamole and margaritas or try Pecan Point Gastropub for the burgers that you’ll talk about the whole ride home.

25. Cool off at the Waterpark at the Villages

This enclosed water park is a great way to cool off in East Texas while making sure that you can let the kids run around a bit more freely.

You’ll find it in Flint, Texas, and it’s a must-do for families.

Spend the day floating around the lazy river, plunge down the waterslides, or jump up and down in the wave pool.

The genius part of it is that you can head here even in the cold weather, and in the summer months, you’ll still get the sun streaming through the glass structure.

26. Go fishing on Lake Palestine

Lake Palestine is a great lake for boating and fishing in East Texas.

Head to the Village Marina where you can set off on your pontoon boat, rent peddalos, or head off on a fishing expedition from the boat ramps.

The lake is consistently used for largemouth bass tournaments due to the sheer number of fish in the lake, and you can also find catfish and spotted bass.

Have a peaceful day on the water with this excellent East Texas activity.

27. Spend the day in Atlanta State Park

If you want to get out into nature and get “lost” on some trails, Atlanta State Park is the place to do it!

And of course, we’re talking about Atlanta in Texas, not Georgia!

It’s quiet, peaceful, the camping sites are huge, and the rangers are incredibly friendly.

Take a picnic and just spend the afternoon, or stay all day and go canoeing.

It’s right on the shores of Wright Patman Lake, a large lake featuring plenty of water activities and one of the most beautiful sunsets in all of Texas.

East Texas is one of the most charming places in the Lone Star State . Most of this region is nestled amongst picturesque piney woods. In addition to the abundance of towering trees and natural beauty, there are plenty of things to do in East Texas.

A few of the must-visit towns in the area include Tyler, Marshall, Jefferson, Nacogdoches, Athens, Palestine, and Henderson. Here you can enjoy various indoor and outdoor activities, such as thrilling train rides and exploring famous landmarks and historic homes.

While East Texas offers many exhilarating experiences, some should not go unmissed. Here are 21 of the best activities to take part in on your next adventure.

Texas is one of the most beautiful U.S. states and an ideal destination for an unwinding escape. Below is a list of the top East Texas attractions to add to your bucket list.

1. Wander Through the Tyler Rose Garden

The city of Tyler is renowned as the unofficial Rose Capital of the Nation. It is home to more than 38,000 rose bushes and over 500 varieties of roses.

This scenic spot is perfect for a peaceful outing with awe-inspiring views. As such, people frequently rent out the Rose Garden and Rose Garden Centre for special events, including weddings and meetings.

Additionally, there is a gift shop and museum on the property. The Tyler Rose Museum is a must-visit attraction that displays stunning preserves and stories of the local rose-growing industry.

The garden is open year-round. But, it’s best enjoyed in early spring as well as late September and October when the roses are in full bloom. If you’re visiting during October, be sure to check out the Texas Rose Festival that takes place in the third week of the month.

2. Visit New York Texas Zipline Adventures

If you’re an adventure seeker looking for panoramic views of East Texas, the New York Texas Zipline Adventure is the place to be. It is located in the New York Community, just a 15 to 20-minute drive east of Athens.

It’s a great way to explore the Piney Woods region as you swing from tree-tops and learn more about the local ecology. The zipline tours take you along six or nine zipline tracks, where you’ll have epic views of the forested area.

This adventure lasts around one and a half to two hours. After the thrilling experience, there are plenty of scenic spaces where you can relax and enjoy a picnic.

Note: As this is a popular spot, it’s best to make a reservation a few days in advance.

3. Kayak at Caddo Lake State Park

Caddo Lake State Park is an East Texas treasure situated in the Piney Woods ecoregion in Karnack. Here you can participate in several activities, such as picnicking, boating, hiking, and fishing.

When fishing in the mighty Caddo Lake, there are more than 70 fish species to discover. Another way to take in the beauty of this natural lake is by canoeing or kayaking. You’ll find more than 80 kilometres (50 miles) of paddling trails with spectacular sights at every twist and turn.

You can bring your own kayak set and equipment or rent a canoe at the park. If you’d like to extend your visit, there are 46 campsites for a splendid stay. Additionally, you can rent a cosy cabin with options ranging from two to six-person cabins.

Note: As there are alligators in the park, be sure to follow the necessary safety tips.

4. Fishing in Lake Athens

Lake Athens is another excellent fishing spot in East Texas. This 1,799-acre reservoir has a maximum depth of 15 metres (50 feet) and supports several fish species. The largemouth bass is the most popular species that attracts numerous eager anglers to this stunning location.

There are also great opportunities to catch sunfish and white bass. Additionally, you’ll find decent-sized crappies, but they are fewer in numbers. And if you’re lucky, you might reel in a catfish.

Near the lake, there is an RV park and a marina with a bait shop and general store for any fishing kit needs. For more fun activities, you can head to the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center on the north shore of the lake. Here you’ll encounter a magnificent fish display with aquariums, natural pools, and hands-on exhibits.

5. Camping at Daingerfield State Park

If you’re looking for a relaxing escape surrounded by nature, a few days at Daingerfield State Park would be perfect. Nestled in Morris County, the park is filled with natural beauty and towering pines, oak, sweetgum, dogwoods, and redbuds.

At the park, there are two types of campsites: full hookup sites and tent-only sites. The full-hookup sites are located in the Big Pine area. It includes several amenities, such as picnic tables, water hookup, sewer hookup, electric hookup, and nearby restrooms.

The tent-only sites are situated in the Cedar Ridge area. Here you’ll have amenities such as an outdoor grill, picnic table, fire ring, water, tent pad, and nearby restrooms.

If you want more comfort on your overnight stay, you can reserve a historic cabin for a rustic-luxury experience. All cabins are well-equipped and feature a bathroom and kitchen.

There are several land and water activities for an enjoyable trip. You can explore the massive lake with activities such as boating, paddling, swimming, and fishing. On land, you can go birding, picnicking, and hiking.

6. Explore the World’s Richest Acre

The East Texas region is a significant contributor to the oil production in the state. As such, your trip would be incomplete without setting foot in the World’s Richest Acre in Kilgore.

In the early 1930s, downtown Kilgore supported the world’s greatest concentration of oil wells and produced over 2.5 million barrels of oil. Unfortunately, the oil derricks were dismantled in the early 1960s.

But, a trip to the World’s Richest Acre is certainly worthwhile as you can tour the historic area and admire the steel replicas. Other nearby points of interest include the Kilgore College East Texas Museum and the Texas Museum of Broadcasting.

7. Take a Ride on the Historic Jefferson Railway

Almost 300 bird species have been documented in the area. However, birdwatching can be challenging at times as a result of the dense vegetation.

Popular birding spots in Big Thicket include the Sundew Trail and Kirby Nature Trail. And if you want the best bird sightings while canoeing or kayaking, take a trip down Cooks Lake to Scatterman Paddle Trail.

One of the most popular trails where you can enjoy sightseeing while walking past the blooming azaleas is the Tyler Azalea Trail. It is held from mid-March to April and comprises two separate routes: the Lindsey Trail and the Dobbs Trail.

Another must-visit location is the Ruby M. Mize Azalea Garden. It is located at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches. Here you’ll find more than 7,000 gorgeous azaleas and around 40 kilometres (25 miles) of azalea trails throughout the historic and residential districts in the city.

One of the best things to do in East Texas is visiting a wildlife and safari park, specifically the Cherokee Trace Drive-Thru Safari. Situated in Jacksonville, this safari park offers an exhilarating outing that’s perfect for those travelling with kids.

Nestled between Tyler and Gladewater, Helen Lee’s Daffodil Garden offers visitors an unforgettable experience. During February and March, you’ll find thousands of blooming daffodils and other flowers at this breathtaking location.

1. The Historic Strand District – Galveston, TX

This unique roadside attraction is located downtown at the Fire Museum of Texas , which is worth visiting in its own right. Here you can see an antique collection of fire engines and equipment dating back to the 1800s, plus kids can drive a fire engine simulator.

If you’re hungry, stick around Beaumont to sample some of Texas’ best cajun food. I recommend the hog cracklins and boudain at Uncle Henry’s , the crawfish étouffée at Floyd’s , or the gumbo at Vautrot’s . 

3. Caddo Lake State Park

While most lakes throughout Texas are man-made, there’s only one in the entire state that’s not—Caddo Lake. Situated on the border with Louisiana, this beautiful, picturesque lake feel like a bayou playground with its bald cypress trees and Spanish moss. 

To enjoy Texas’ only natural lake, make sure you go to Caddo Lake State Park . An excellent place to kayak, canoe, or paddleboard, you can spend hours exploring the lake’s maze of trees and marshes within its 50 miles of paddling trails.

7 Best Small Towns in East Texas/Piney Woods

It seems like every time I leave our small town, I find a new road leading to another small town.

It’s made it especially difficult for this west-Texas girl to get her directional bearings, but some of the most beautiful places in East Texas can be found on these winding little highways.

Seriously, I am utterly dependent on Google maps. If I lose reception, my panic steadily grows until I reach the top of the next hill and the Google lady (I call her Ethel) starts talking to me again.

Based on my year of exploration so far, here’s a few of the best small towns Ethel and I have found in East Texas:

Ethel’s (my name for the Google maps lady) favorite route, and one of the prettiest drives in East Texas, goes right through downtown Pittsburg, Texas.

While a lot of small towns have trouble with dilapidated, vacant downtown buildings, Pittsburg is vibrant and full of small businesses to explore.

Even the old murals are well-preserved and vibrant.

It’s lit beautifully at night, making it a great place for a romantic evening stroll, or a photoshoot.

Every time I drive through, I fantasize living above a bakery on the main street and handing out bread on the street corner while everyone sings the opening number from a cartoon movie.

If you’re looking to run errands, have some fun and eat some chocolate, Mt. Pleasant is the destination for you.

Mt. Pleasant is home to the country’s largest handmade chocolate shop. If that’s not a reason to drop everything and hit the road, I’m not sure what is.

But beyond sweets, Mt. Pleasant is a hub for the tinier towns in the area, and as a result has just a little bit of whatever you’re looking for. From big box stores to smaller specialty shops, medical services and easy access to I-30, (Ethel loves that) Mt. Pleasant is full of convenience.

How pleasant is that? (Sorry, had to.)

3. Quirkiest: Gladewater, TX

Gladewater prides itself on being the best spot for antiques in East Texas. That’s probably true, although I’m not a great antique collector myself. (I’m more of a furniture-nobody-else-wanted collector.)

Ethel has no use for antiques either.

But with those prized collections of treasures from days past, comes a whole quirky culture that I really get into when I have a chance to visit Gladewater.

There’s a few adorable little cafes and bakeries, plus boutiques with unexpected wares. In one such boutique, an artisan had upcycled mounted deer heads with rhinestones and paint. They even had fake eyelashes!

She said it’s one of her most popular products, and she regularly has clients commission glammed up deer for their home or office décor.

Several blocks from the diva-deer store stands my favorite little independent used bookstore.

I really thought I was going to find Meg Ryan sitting on the floor reading to children when we walked in.

Instead, I found an older man who resembles the man who runs the bookstore in the animated Beauty and Beast.

The place has that magical smell of books just waiting to reveal some new thought or adventure you haven’t had yet. It’s a great place to find inspiration.

In the middle of all of these stores and cafes, there are oil derricks and a railroad.

I think it’s a fascinating place.

Mt. Vernon has an adorable square, with a beautiful, small library.

It’s the perfect spot to spend a hot afternoon.

Right off the square, there’s a very nice, little splash pad where the kids can cool off and a nearby playground right out of 1998, complete with a long, metal slide and giant merry-go-round.

The town is completely surrounded by gorgeous farmland except for where I-30 runs right through it.

Dining options are pretty limited, but there’s an authentic Texas Barbecue joint. (That and Tex-Mex is really all a true Texan needs, and even the Tex-Mex place in Mt. Vernon can suffice in a pinch.)

If you’re looking for that true, small-town, slow-pace experience, Mt. Vernon is worth a visit.

Jefferson is on my bucket list of places to really go full tourist in. I’ve been through there a time or two and explored a couple of less-prominent places, but there is an incredible amount of history in Jefferson left to be seen.

It was the trade port for Northeast Texas, because of the railway and water access to Shreveport and New Orleans.

To this day, the antebellum architecture and landmarks tell the story of early Texas trade and are just so fascinating to me. I’m especially looking forward to geeking out at the gorgeous 1907 Carnegie Library.

Fun Jefferson Fact: A funny thing I didn’t know before I became a resident of East Texas is that a lot of people here believe in Bigfoot and keep an eye out for her (turns out bigfoot is likely female) on a regular basis.

Jefferson honors this search for Bigfoot at the Port Jefferson History and Nature Center, where you can take a picture with the Bigfoot statue and walk the trail to look for Bigfoot. (In fact, the Texas Bigfoot Research Center is located in Jefferson.)

Myself, I’m a skeptic. Ethel doesn’t know where bigfoot is, so I figure I don’t need to.

Kilgore is a small town with retro, big-city aspirations.

As such, they’re big on entertainment. They have multiple historic movie theaters, East Texas’ only professional theater group, and numerous other throwback entertainment venues, including a roller-skating rink and bowling alley.

Even their museums tend to center on entertainment. The Rangerettes, the oil boom and TV and radio broadcasting each have their own museum in Kilgore.

All in all, Kilgore is a great place to step away from the routine of day-to-day life.

If happiness to you involves potting soil and you’re in the neighborhood, spend a minute in Emory. That small town is somehow able to support a huge nursery, feedstore and other related businesses all within a mile of one another.

It’s impressive!

And I’m always tempted to pretend like I have a green thumb and bring home some poor unsuspecting plant, lying to myself about how unlikely it is to live more than a month in my “care.”

Contrary to popular belief, Texas does have lovely fall foliage, but you’ll have to wait until later in the year to see it. When fall does arrive — usually in late October — it’s a beaut, and East Texas is where you’ll see rich autumn colors of yellow, orange, red, brown, and green from maple, oak, dogwood, and many other trees. 

Many towns in the area are getting prepared for their fall festivals, fall foliage driving trails are getting their manicure from Mother Nature, and travelers who want to experience East Texas’s rolling hills, forests of green, and cooler temperatures are making plans to visit. So get ready to plan a day trip, or better yet, an autumn getaway in this neck of the (piney) woods.

I’ve listed the best scenic towns in no particular order for a charming fall visit complete with fall foliage, scenic drives, and family fun. To me, fall is the most enjoyable time to visit Texas.

Pro Tips: If you’re coming to East Texas just to see fall colors, plan your visit in late October. In some areas, fall foliage can last until early December. But if you’re coming for the festivals, be sure to check the dates. Some can even be in September. 

When you do find yourself in East Texas during fall, be sure to meander through the back roads as much as possible for the most picturesque backdrops of what fall has to offer in this area of Texas.

1. Marshall

Marshall, Texas is better known for having the best winter light show during the holidays called Wonderland of Lights, but autumn rolls around first, and Old Stagecoach Road turns into an 8-mile fall frolic drive. It’s a narrow dirt road that begins in Marshall and ends in Karnack, Texas. Legends have it that this road is haunted, or maybe it’s just spooky.

Marshall is roughly 150 miles east of Dallas on I-20, or for the scenic route, take Highway 80. If you’re looking for things to do in town, check out historic downtown, Enoch’s Stomp Vineyard & Winery, and Karma Farms — one of the best places to go horseback riding. When I was there recently, it was just me and the owner on the trails. She showed me a great time, and I even got to trot the horse.

Pro Tip: Caddo Lake is close by and is another area with gorgeous fall foliage, plus you can take a tour on the bayou to see the hanging cypress trees. The peak time for color tends to be the end of October through late November.

2. Palestine

In mid-November, beautiful autumn colors swarm the town of Palestine , and every year visitors get their cars ready to drive the Pineywoods Autumn Trail. The trail is a 145-mile scenic road trip along breathtaking back roads in Palestine that includes historical markers and magnificent fall colors. Autumn colors are expected to arrive mid to late November.

While in town, you may want to stick around to enjoy outdoor adventures, train excursions, local cuisine, and historic shops. Also, catch a ride on the well-known Texas State Railroad , and ride it to Rusk, Texas, and back for a scenic fall tour of pinewood, rolling hills, nature, and wildlife. The railroad has a park at each end of the excursion route.

The 55-mile self-guided scenic fall foliage trail through Athens has once been named the best fall foliage trail in East Texas. On this route, you’ll have a chance to visit several points of interest, including the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center and the East Texas Arboretum & Botanical Society, where you can take an afternoon stroll through the gardens. If you like the adrenaline of zipping across treetops, check out New York Texas Zipline Adventure for a fun time. It’s less than a 20-minute drive from town and is also on the driving route. I’ve ziplined there twice, not in the fall, but in the summer, and it was the most thrilling zipline course my grandson and I have been on. If you’re up for it, be sure to zip the nine lines. The best is at the end!

Pro Tip: If you’d like to check out farmers markets in Athens , the last one for the year is the last weekend in October, at 212 North Palestine Street, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

4. Nacogdoches

The town claims the title of “Garden Capital of Texas,” and with beautiful landscapes at the Mast Arboretum on the Stephen F. Austin University campus, that’s a good reason to plan a visit. The oldest town in Texas, Nacogdoches (Nac for short) is especially stunning during the fall season. Deep East Texas Fall Foliage Trail loops from Nacogdoches to Alto, Crockett, Livingston, Newton, Hemphill, San Augustine , and Shelbyville. A map of the trail is available at the visitor center located at 200 East Main Street. When planning your trip, be sure to look for the downtown art walk, vintage market days, and the several festivals in town. The best time to visit for fall foliage is in late October through early December. A year-round farmers market is held every Saturday at 107 West Pearl Street.

Pro Tip: Auntie Pasta’s Italian Restaurant is a great place to grab a pizza or pasta — all handmade.

5. Daingerfield

This town is on every list when it comes to the best towns to visit in Texas in the fall. Why? Because of the natural beauty of blazing yellow, orange, red, and pink colors of autumn you’ll see at Daingerfield State Park . In late October, the leaves start tumbling down all over the park, making way for an excellent fall backdrop. The reflections of the trees on the lake and the wildlife out there are other reasons this area is so special.

If a day visit is all you have, plan for it, but if a weekend stay is in the works, check out the cabins for rent in the park. That way, you’ll get at least 2 days to see and experience autumn at probably the best place in Texas. And don’t forget about all the hiking you could do there. The very best time to visit the park is in early to mid-November. There is a small entrance fee to enter the park.

Pro Tip: Right outside of town is The Greer Farm , which offers lovely cabins to rent overlooking a pond and free bicycle rentals. This would make a nice and quiet autumn getaway option if all the cabins in the park are full.

6. Jefferson

Jefferson, Texas , is a town that shows up on lists for the best places to stay with big Texas charm . It is a large bed and breakfast community — probably the first town to do so in Texas — and offers many fun attractions for the whole family. There is always something fun going on in town, including a Texas Bigfoot Conference. Yes, the locals swear they’ve seen Bigfoot out there a time or two. He’s so popular, it seems there’s a need for a conference!

Pro Tip: Lake O’ The Pines is a nice lake nearby that offers parks, camping, and canoe, kayak, and boat rentals, and of course, beautiful fall colors.

7. Winnsboro

Winnsboro is one of those towns you want to live in, or at least near, for the close community it seems to have and the fun activities that go on all year long. The town is well-known for its annual festivals, including its free Winnsboro Autumn Trails. Also look for a chili cook-off, antique car parade, and a trail ride. The Winnsboro Autumn Trails put this town on the map — complete with a brochure and all. There are three routes to choose from. Check with the Winnsboro Autumn Trails Association for exact routes and more information.

Highway 14 and Highway 16, or virtually any farm-to-market road, are excellent drives for fall favorites.

8. Longview

Located on I-20 between Dallas and Shreveport, this place that is well-known for its East Texas charm is easy to access. Longview , one of the largest cities in the Piney Woods region of East Texas , would be an excellent choice for a visit in the fall with the family. With gorgeous views of the Longview Arboretum & Nature Center in the fall and the events going on there in October — including a wine festival — it would certainly be my pick for a fun time.

Pro Tip: If you’re a fan of coffee, head down to the local’s favorite coffee shop, Silver Grizzly Espresso , for a cold brew, Americano, or any one of their specialty coffees.

The Rose Capital of America is none other than Tyler, Texas , and for good reason. The Tyler Municipal Rose Garden includes over 38,000 rose bushes and over 600 different varieties, and it holds the Texas Rose Festival every year in mid-October. Fall coloring may not be around for it just yet. However, when it’s time, Tyler State Park will explode into a palette of orange, yellow, and red foliage (usually in late November), but don’t be surprised if it doesn’t arrive until early December.

Pro Tip: From spring to fall, you can buy cut roses from a vendor that sells out of her van in the French Quarter Shopping Center at the corner of Loop 323 and Broadway, near Einstein Brothers Bagels. For as long as I can remember, Tyler roses have been sold on street corners in Dallas — but I just don’t see this anymore.

Texas State Railroad

Running on tracks first laid in 1896, the Texas State Railroad crisscrosses the East Texas Piney Woods between the towns of Rusk and Palestine. Riding the rails of the Texas State Railroad is one of the best ways to take in the natural beauty of the East Texas Piney Woods. Tours on the Texas State Railroad are particularly popular during spring when the flowers are in full bloom. Taking this tour in the Victorian era passenger cars of the Texas State Railroad, which was first established in 1881, is like taking a trip back in time. The Texas State Railroad offers a variety of tours and special events. However, the "standard" trip is the Piney Woods Steam Excursion, which is a round trip between Rusk and Palestine.

Big Thicket National Preserve

Although the East Texas region is known for its towering pine trees, it is the enormous cypress trees found within the Big Thicket National Preserve which add such a unique characteristic to this national park. As the first area to be designated as a national preserve in the United States, Big Thicket National Preserve covers more than 100,000 acres and offers visitors a dizzying array of outdoor recreational opportunities. Backpacking, hiking, camping, canoeing and fishing are popular activities within the preserve. There are also numerous trails for biking, jogging, bird watching and nature viewing.

Nacogdoches

As the oldest town in Texas, Nacogdoches is definitely a "must see" for any history enthusiast visiting Texas. As one might expect from the oldest town in the state, Nacogdoches is rich in history . Starting in the early 1700s, the Spanish began attempting to establish missions in the area. In 1779, a group of settlers established a local government in Nacogdoches. In 1832, citizens of Nacogdoches drove Mexican troops from the town during the "Battle of Nacogdoches," helping set the stage for the Texas Revolution. In 1845, Nacogdoches University was established. In 1923, Stephen F Austin Teachers College, which later became Stephen F Austin University, was founded. Today, Nacogdoches is a blend of history, Spanish design and Southern charm.

Lake Sam Rayburn

Lake Sam Rayburn, also affectionately known as "Big Sam," is the largest reservoir fully contained within the state of Texas (nearby Toledo Bend Reservoir is larger, but is partially located in Louisiana). Impounded in 1965, Sam Rayburn covers 114,000 acres. Located just outside the East Texas town of Jasper, Sam Rayburn has become a popular destination for fishermen, boaters, water skiiers and others looking to "spend a day at the lake."

Tyler Roses

The rose fields of Tyler have become legendary for both the quality of their flowers as well as the sheer magnitude of the fields. Make no mistake, Tyler is reliant on roses. Rose lovers can tour the commercial production fields on the outskirts of town or take a stroll through the magnificent Tyler Municipal Rose Garden, which showcases 40,000 rose bushes representing 500 different varieties of roses. East Texas has several picturesque spots thanks to its dense forests. In fact, because of the abundance of lush pine forests in this region, it’s commonly referred to as the Pineywoods!

Not only that, but the lakes, historic sites, and popular attractions in East Texas make it a must-visit destination. Without further ado, here’s a list of the top five things to do in this region; take a look:

1. Visit Tyler Rose Garden

You can’t be in East Texas and not go to the rose capital of America, Tyler. This vibrant city is the source of one-half of the roses shipped throughout the U.S.

Lucky for us, the enchanting Tyler rose garden opened its doors in 1952 to showcase countless gorgeous rose varieties. This garden contains over 32,000 rose bushes of 600 different cultivars. It’s no surprise that it’s America’s largest public rose collection!

You’re welcome to visit the garden for free all year long. That being said, we recommend visiting the town during the Texas Rose Festival in October. It’s a culturally rich event with magical ceremonies like the Queen’s Coronation and the Rose Parade.

2. Explore the Big Thicket National Preserve

The Big Thicket will, without a doubt, captivate any nature enthusiast. This national preserve in southeast Texas encompasses over 113,000 acres of public land. It serves as the habitat for many different plant and animal species.

Passing through the towering pine trees, with birds soaring above you and deer roaming around, will leave you in awe. Yet, be cautious—you might come across an alligator or two!

The best part is that there are countless ways to explore this idyllic spot. You can hike one of the park’s popular trails, such as the Kirby Nature or the Pitcher Plant. If you prefer to ride a bike, you can also cycle through this lush forest.

The fun doesn’t stop there; the Big Thicket is also a great place to go, birdwatching, fishing, kayaking, and hunting.

3. Paddle in Caddo Lake State Park

Paddling in Caddo Lake while navigating through massive bald cypress and Spanish moss trees is an absolute blast. This spectacular lake spans over 25,400 acres and is located on the border of Texas and Louisiana.

Don’t worry if you don’t have any paddling equipment; you can easily rent it there. You can even take a boat ride if you want to explore the lake a little bit more. In all cases, you should read the park’s safety guidelines before visiting since alligators live there.

The good news is that you won’t have to limit this adventure to just one day. There are 46 campsites in the park where you can stay and enjoy the views for a while longer!

4. Take a Memorable Train Ride

A ride on the Texas State Railroad is quite epic! Inmates built this 25-mile railroad in 1883 to transport cargo between Rusk and Palestine. After renovations, the train takes passengers on a memorable journey through the region’s majestic woodland.

Texas State Railroad offers a 4-hour guided roundtrip with food and adult beverages on board. You can sit back and enjoy the breathtaking scenery while learning about the fascinating history of the railroad.

Taking this ride during the spring will be a one-of-a-kind experience. You see, you’ll get to witness the forest’s flowers bloom in all their gorgeous hues!

5. Make a Trip to the Oldest Town in Texas

Travel back in time by stopping in Nacogdoches, Texas’s oldest town. It was founded in 1779 and still houses some of Texas’ most treasured historical sites. One of them is the iconic Nacogdoches Railroad Depot which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

In a nutshell, this site was built in 1911 to replace the original wooden depot, which burned down after being struck by lightning. Currently, it’s a museum that displays the exciting history of the railroad and its passengers.

While in Nacogdoches, don’t forget to check out the marvelous SFA Mast Arboretum. It’s a 10-acre garden with a diverse collection of native plants; it’s home to over 7500 plant species.

Hands down, Texas has some of the most flavorful dishes you’ll ever eat. You’ll be surprised by the number of diners and restaurants in East Texas that serve delicious food!

Overall, the crime rate in East Texas and the news may suggest that it’s not the safest place to visit. You can visit Tyler and Longview for a greater sense of security. In 2021, they ranked among the top 20 safest cities in Texas.

East Texas is certainly a destination worth visiting. It’s a place where you can appreciate nature, history, and culture all at the same time. This region is covered in magnificent pine forests, making it an ideal destination for various activities such as hiking, ziplining, cycling, etc. East Texas is also home to well-known historical sites, including the Caddo Mounds and the Texas State Railroad. Not to mention that the world’s largest flea market, First Monday Trade Days, is held there.

15 Best Things To Do In East Texas In Spring

These are the best things to do in East Texas in spring when the weather is nice & the flowers are blooming.

While you might think the best place for a road trip in spring would be the Hill Country because of its beautiful scenic views, wineries, etc. But you may not know that some of the best places to explore Texas are in the East Texas Region. You can’t beat a landscape of forests and streams in the piney woods of Texas and the natural beauty of pine trees that line the highways. I think you’ll like these things to do in East Texas in spring because the weather is suitable for all things outdoors.

Travel Tip: Don’t forget the Texas bluebonnets and other wildflowers will be scattered all around East Texas in springtime. Also, whenever possible – take backroads for scenic views. That’s my motto!

The Piney Woods Region of Texas is full of East Texas cities and many tall trees …everywhere. Did you know the oldest town in Texas is Nacogdoches, which happens to be in East Texas? Did you know that Texas has four national forests …and all four are in East Texas?

When in small towns, think about visiting the visitor center first to pick up brochures, and to find out when their farmers market is held, ask about historic sites and special events. These are some of the things I like to do.

Check out the East Texas vacation spots below for the whole family to enjoy!

1. Go On The Piney Woods Wine Trail

It’s a self-guided tour among many wineries in East Texas. Enjoy a wine tasting at each place you stop. There are about twenty wineries, vineyards, & tasting rooms in this area. Find a quaint place to stay along the trail. This makes a great weekend getaway.

2. Scope The Wildflowers In East Texas

You’ll see a bunch of wildflowers, including Texas Bluebonnets, in our East Texas state parks between March & April. There are eleven state parks in the east. If you’re going there via Ennis, stop and look – because you’ll see a bunch.

3. Make It A Weekend In Tyler, TX

You could spend an entire weekend in Tyler, Texas, and still not see everything. Tyler houses the Tyler Rose Garden, the most extensive rose garden globally known as the Rose Capital of the World. Admission is free.

The Tyler Rose Museum, Historic Aviation Memorial Museum, and Texas Rose Horse Park are other things to do and see. And a family favorite is the Caldwell Zoo & the Tyler State Park.

The Tyler Azalea Trail is in March – April, and you talk about gorgeous pink flowers everywhere – you’ll see a gazillion of them on this self-guided auto tour.

Add Athens at the beginning and Louisiana at the end for a nice vacation the whole family will enjoy – or in reverse order depending on where you start. If you go to Athens, east of Dallas but not technically in East Texas, take a day trip to the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center. That and the East Texas Arboretum is a traveler’s favorite.

4. See The Dogwood Blooms On The Texas State Railroad

The  Texas State Railroad in the piney woods of Palestine, Texas, offers train rides through the piney woods of East Texas. Enjoy the ride, plus food, drinks, and more. You’ll be in for a treat, depending on which train ride you experience. The Dogwood Train Excursion operates in April when the dogwoods are in full bloom. Palestine also offers a wonderful Azalea trail in the springtime. Be sure to read about that on their website.

5. Visit A National Forest

Texas has only four National Forests in the entire state, all of which lie in East Texas. That’s over 675,000 acres of public land in Texas.

Sabine National Forest  – fish, hunt, ride horses, mountain bikes, hike, and camp.

Angelina National Forest covers a lot of territory – so big it’s in four East Texas Counties – Angelina, Nacogdoches, San Augustine, and Jasper. So much you can do here – fishing, four-wheeling, picnic tables, hunting, canoeing, hiking, and more. Close to Jasper, TX.

Davy Crockett National Forest  – Go here for beautiful streams, picnics, and wildlife viewing in Crockett, TX.

Sam Houston National Forest – Enjoy your day hiking, swimming, and fishing for largemouth bass here. In Coldsprings – close to Conroe, TX.

6. Canoe Big Thicket Natural Preserve

Hiking, canoeing, Ranger programs, backcountry camping, cabins to rent, and more is what you can expect at  Big Thicket National Preserve . Hunting is also allowed, but be sure to read about that on the website. It is located in Kountze, TX.

7. Zip The New York Texas Zipline Adventures

NY Texas Zipline is located in LaRue, TX (near Tyler). Brody and I have zipped there twice. The first time we zipped the 6-line course. We splurged for the 9-line course the second time—worth every penny. The last line was over a pond and so surreal.

8. Take A Guided Boat Tour On Caddo Lake 

Caddo Lake in Uncertain, TX, spans the Texas-Louisiana border and is known for its tall creepy cypress trees that dominate the shallow, murky waters. Visitors come to Caddo Lake for its beauty, stories, and adventures. I went there for the stories and an adventure tour. We used Caddo Lake Bayou Tours , and let me tell you – our tour guide told some wild stories. And, if you’re lucky, you may see the eyes of an alligator – but not likely. That’s what our tour guide told us. For guided fishing tours, try Ole Jigger Caddo Lake Adventures  – I bet they have a lot of fish tales with a name like that!

The best time to visit Caddo Lake is when the lotus flowers bloom. That’s usually From April through June. The blooms make it very eye-appealing. If there is time in your visit, go to Caddo Lake National Wildlife Refuge.

9. Have A Picnic At Daingerfield State Park

I have not been here, but I want to go. But I’m betting it’s beautiful in the spring as it is in the fall. It’s one of the most thought-after state parks in the area for its dogwood blooms in every color, so be sure to make an online reservation before heading out. Camping, hiking, and picnicking are all available there.

10. Visit A Few Small Towns

So many small towns in East Texas. Here are my favs.

Carthage POP 7000 – See The Texas Country Music Hall of Fame And Tex Ritter Museum, a historical jail museum, and historic homes.

Magnolia POP 2222 – Lone Pint Brewer and home of the Texas Renaissance Festival.

Mineola POP 5000 – One of my all-time favorites for when I want to go to a yoga retreat. I’ve visited 3X so far. They have an adorable downtown, too, with lots of shops.

Rusk POP 5900 – Nestled in the heart of the piney woods and where you can take a round-trip excursion on the Texas State Railroad to Palestine. Jim Hogg Historic Park, Maydelle Country Wines Winery, a garden park, and more.

11. Go On A Hot Air Balloon Ride In Longview, TX

Go before their Great Texas Balloon Race in June because no rides are offered then. Besides that, spring is nicer …up, up, and away! Check out Balloon Adventures, USA .

12. Visit Lindale – Home of Miranda Lambert

You can visit her unique boutique – The Pink Pistol, and enjoy a wine tasting in the Red 55 Winery Hemingway Room. Make a full day of it and see the Old Mill Pond Museum.

13. Spend The Afternoon At Los Pinos Ranch Vineyards

If you love wine and wine tastings and exploring vineyards, head to  Los Pinos Ranch Vineyards for that and dinner and live music. Located in Pittsburg, TX, which is way up there in the northeast near Mount Pleasant.

14. Visit The Oldest Town In Texas

Nacogdoches is the Oldest Town in Texas. Did you know that? The historic downtown is full of historic structures and great shopping. So if you’re a history buff or someone in your family is and wants to know more about Texas History – start in this town. Go off the grid a bit and enjoy the oldest town in Texas.

15. Tee Off In East Texas

East Texas has at least 16 top golf courses, all having something remarkable about them. The one that comes to mind, and I see it on several lists I’ve researched, is Whispering Pines Golf Club in Trinity, TX, 88 miles north of Houston and a short drive from Huntsville, TX. Piney woods, creeks & lakes, and plenty of wildlife surround the property making this a golfer’s haven. There are also cottages on the property.

Another to mention is  Pine Springs Golf Club  in Tyler, which is open to the public with gorgeous greens, golf lessons, dining, and more.

10 Enchanting East Texas State Parks to Visit

Often overlooked for the deserts of West Texas or the rolling hills of Central Texas, the beautiful East Texas state parks boast towering pines, reflective waters, and often amazing wildlife.

While Houston, Austin, and Dallas are often the first places in Texas people think to visit, don’t discount the beauty that the Pineywoods and other gorgeous landscapes available in state parks in East Texas offer.

East Texas is different from many areas in the state because of the unique landscape it provides.

As you drive through East Texas, you are greeted by dogwoods, oaks, pines, and more that create a beautiful backdrop for any adventure.

While some places in Texas don’t offer a ton of fall color, East Texas is typically painted with reds, oranges, and yellows as fall arrives.

The best way to enjoy the great outdoors that this beautiful region offers is by heading to one of the magnificent state parks in East Texas.

Each of these TX state parks has its own unique qualities that make spending an entire day outdoors easy.

Also, before you go: remember that no matter where you explore in Texas, always bring water as temperatures change frequently and some days have extremely hot temperatures!

That being said, here are the best East Texas state parks to visit this year.

Caddo Lake State Park

Right outside the delightful town of Jefferson lies a park that has a strong reputation for being a favorite of many.

As you drive down the large hill of the park, you quickly become welcomed by cypress trees that are positively coated in dripping Spanish moss.

Grab your kayak and pull it into the waters of Caddo Lake to truly immerse yourself into the world of Caddo Lake State Park .

As you paddle through miles of water, you can look up to be greeted by Spanish moss that trails from the highest points of the trees all the way down to the water.

Kayaking in Caddo Lake transports you into an entirely new world and reminds you just how magical nature truly is.

While kayaking and water sports are a huge draw of Caddo Lake, you can also take to the trails in search of the wildlife that calls this East Texas state park home.

Grab a comfy cabin to have a weekend in nature or sleep under the stars while nestled by a warm campfire.

No matter how you choose to experience Caddo Lake, you are sure to leave with memories that have you coming back for more.

Tyler State Park

Right in the heart of East Texas lies Tyler State Park.

Tyler State Park draws you in from the very beginning as you drive down the windy roads through the towering pines on either side.

As you drive, around nearly every turn you are greeted by more and more natural beauty.

The gem of the park is the 64-acre spring-fed lake that welcomes you with its crystal waters and unwavering beauty.

This lake allows you to take to the water to experience Tyler State Park from an entirely new vantage point.

Paddleboats, kayaks, and more are the perfect way to get onto the water and be truly engulfed in the nature that surrounds you.

If getting on the water is not quite your thing you can always try your hand at trying to catch one of the fish that populate this beautiful lake.

A day relaxing with a fishing pole in hand is the perfect way to spend a day in East Texas.

With over 13 miles of trails, you can hike part of your day and get a workout in and then dip in the cool waters that the lake provides.

Spend a whole weekend at Tyler State Park by packing your tent or renting a relaxing cabin or screened shelter.

Cooper Lake State Park

Cooper Lake has plenty of room to enjoy the great outdoors with your friends and family.

Because of the size of the park, you can have plenty of space to enjoy yourself without feeling crowded with people.

Cooper Lake offers you plenty of things to do to spend your day outside, soaking up nature.

Take to the waters to fish and swim or go on a hike to explore nature.

Try and catch a glimpse of the wildlife that calls Cooper Lake home while you are exploring the miles of trails.

If you love horseback riding and you have a horse, there are plenty of equestrian trails for you to enjoy.

Besides trails, there are equestrian and standard campsites that will allow you to turn your Cooper Lake State Park adventure into an entire weekend of fun.

Daingerfield State Park

Daingerfield State Park is another East Texas state park that has plenty to do and allows you a variety of options to soak up the outdoors.

As you enter the park, you will find yourself surrounded by towering trees that seem to whistle as the wind blows through them, providing a beautiful backdrop for a day outdoors.

Pines, dogwoods, and oaks surround you all day long as you hike, fish, and swim in the 80-acre lake of Daingerfield State Park.

During the months of March through November, you can even try your hand at dancing on the outdoor pavilion.

Every Saturday night during these months, karaoke and live music will bellow through the night air.

Purtis Creek State Park

Purtis Creek State Park is a fisherman’s paradise, and for good reason.

This 355-acre lake boasts bass, catfish, and crappie and has fishermen coming from miles around to see just what they can catch.

The park lends rods and fishing gear and provides you plenty of spots to fish from the bank, out on the water, and from their multiple fishing piers.

As with any state park in Texas, you don’t need a fishing license to fish here, but you will need a pass to fish overnight if you want to try your hand at fishing in the dark.

Purtis Creek State Park will allow 50 boats on the water and offers you a few trails to choose from to hike.

Huntsville State Park

With over 20 miles of hiking trails winding through the Pineywoods and plenty of fishing and camping options, Huntsville State Park is a beautiful and classic state park in East Texas to visit.

Boating on Lake Raven, camping on the shores of the lake, and hiking trails built by the CCC are among the best things to do in Huntsville State Park.

Peaceful and quiet, this is a fantastic place to feel like you’re getting away from it all while actually only traveling just off of I-45 in Huntsville.

Martin Creek State Park

Martin Creek State Park is an excellent choice for year-round swimming as the nearby power plant keeps the waters warm throughout the year.

This state park is a hidden gem with a lake full of crappie, yellow catfish, sunfish, tilapia, and more.

With a variety of fish you can catch, the possibilities are endless for the fun you can have at Martin Creek State Park.

During your trip to Martin Creek State Park, you may catch a fishing tournament where contestants bring in fish of all types and sizes.

After you spend your day on the water, you can take to the four miles of trails for a view of nature and a great end-of-day workout.

Lake Bob Sandlin State Park

Lake Bob Sandlin State Park is home to a massive 9,000-acre lake that fishermen flock to from all over Texas to try their hand at catching a gem.

In addition, you can catch some oranges and yellows paint the forest of Lake Bob Sandlin State Park during fall foliage season in Texas .

While you are visiting this state park in East TX, you can spend your day fishing for bass or catfish or sit back and admire the plants and wildlife.

Lake Bob Sandling is a combination of a variety of ecosystems, providing you with plenty to see.

Make your trip into an entire weekend by reserving a comfortable cabin or screened shelter or relaxing under the stars with a tent site with electricity and water.

Mission Tejas State Park

Mission Tejas State Park is a park that is laden with history, allowing you to experience nature and learn something new at the same time.

In this park, you will see aspects that show the attempts of Spaniards trying to claim this area from Native Americans, as well as a log cabin that was built with tremendous efforts.

Decide to soak up the crisp cool air on the eight miles of trails where you can hike and see various species of plants and animals.

Y ou can also decide to set up camp for the night by renting a site with electricity and water.

Dogwood trees bloom in the spring, painting the area with beautiful colors.

Bring your fishing pole to fish at the nearby pond and where you can sit back and relax on a day surrounded by nature.

Mission Tejas State Park is one of the best East Texas state parks for those that love both history and nature, allowing them to combine two great loves.

Atlanta State Park

In the far east corner of Texas lies Atlanta State Park.

Atlanta State Park has a reservoir that is over 33,000 acres and is home to some giant catfish, making it a popular place to go fishing in East Texas.

Many people travel here to catch the large fish that call the reservoir home or escape from the hustle and bustle of life.

Besides fishing, you can hike over four miles of trails and then end the day gathered around a campfire at one of the 58 campsites that the park offers.

Atlanta State Park is a perfect way to spend the day and provides plenty of spaces to enjoy a picnic outdoors.

Located west of Tyler at the intersection of Texas Highway 64 and Texas Highway 19 is the City of Athens in Henderson County.

Popular Athens area attractions include the widely known and visited Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFFC) , combining outdoor education with a production fish hatchery. This $18 million facility was built without the use of state funds even though it belongs to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. TFFC houses a hatchery, laboratory, aquarium, and education center focusing on underwater wildlife in the state’s freshwater streams, ponds and lakes.

The East Texas Arboretum & Botanical Society provides over 100 acres of natural East Texas nature and beauty. Other attractions include the Henderson County Historical Museum, the Henderson County Fairgrounds, the Athens Scuba Park, the Cain Center and Cain Park, Lake Athens, and the Tara Winery. The Athens Scuba Park is a world-class dive site, attracting SCUBA divers from across the USA, and the world. A 35-foot deep, 8-acre spring-fed clay pit at the park is on the grounds of the old Harbson-Walker brick factory, one of the area's first industries.

The City of Athens Department of Tourism offers a scenic driving trail for visitors to take this fall season to view the fall foliage of East Texas. Henderson County has breathtaking scenic highways and byways that are identified on the easy to follow interactive map. The 55-mile self-guided driving trail begins and ends at the Athens Partnership Center, located at 201 W. Corsicana Street.

Beaumont offers residents and visitors a wide-range of attractions and things to do. From museums to entertainment districts, from historic sites to a wealth of outdoor activities, Beaumont has it all!

Canton Attractions

Carthage Attractions

The City of Carthage is located in Panola County, Texas, near the Louisiana border. It is located at the intersection of U.S. Highways 59 and 79.

Center Attractions

Shelby County is known as the "Gateway to the Texas Forest Country".

Center is located near Lake Pinkston and the massive Toledo Bend Reservoir, both offering camping and fishing amenities. The nearby Sabine National Forest offers numerous outdoor recreational options such as fishing, hunting, biking, and camping.

The county is a bird watcher's paradise and home to hundreds of species, populated by graceful water fowl and beautiful deep woods songbirds.

The historic Shelby County Courthouse, located downtown, is a 2-story Romanesque brick structure. The Shelby County Museum includes a variety of exhibits and artifacts about the area.

Popular local events include the What-A-Melon Festival in early July, and the East Texas Poultry Festival in October.

Coldspring Attractions

Coldspring, Texas, the county seat of San Jacinto County, is located southwest of Livingston, south of Onalaska and northeast of Conroe.

There are approximately twenty-five golf courses within a 50-mile radius of Coldspring.

Nearby, the Sam Houston National Forest, Lake Livingston, and Double Lake recreational area offer opportunities for camping, hiking, fishing, and water skiing.

Edom Attractions and Things to Do

Edom, Texas is just a short drive west of Tyler towards Ben Wheeler and Canton at the intersection of FM 279 and FM 314.

It's a lovely small community of restaurants, art galleries and more. It is also the home to spring and fall art shows well known in all of Texas, and the Second Saturday Art Jam.

We love to visit and have lunch at Edom, and attend the Edom Festival of the Arts .

The Second Saturday Art Jam , sponsored by 279 Artisans Trail, includes activities such as exhibits of the works of artists, craft demonstrations, children's art, antique and hot rod car shows, and more.

Along the trail visitors will find 11 artists shops representing 50 artists, antique stores, fresh farm produce, three nurseries/garden centers, a motorcycle/ice cream shop, several music venues, two clothing stores, one bed & breakfast, one spa service, and four restaurants.

279 Artisans Trail is a combined effort of artists and businesses along Farm Road 279 between Edom and Ben Wheeler, dedicated to the promotion of arts and culture through education, entertainment, community interaction and trade.

Artisans in pottery, silver jewelry, glassware, macrame, and leather crafts live in town and operate attractive shops. We like to shop at Zeke & Marty, Arbor Caste Birdhouses, and other shops along the main street.

We also make special trips to Blue Moon Gardens nursery just east of Edom. The quality of all of their plants is excellent, and their selection of butterfly and hummingbird-friendly plants is huge.

The grounds themselves at Blue Moon are very well done and make a great place for walks, and the inside gift shop and garden center are not to be missed! Plus, their new outdoor pizza kitchen is beautiful. Blue Moon also offers a variety of interesting and informative classes, with well known regional instructors such as Midge Jackson.

Nearby is the Texas Rose Horse Park which offers a variety of equestrian events at its beautiful location on Texas Highway 110, just off I-20 at Exit 548.

Located just a few miles west of Edom is the City of Canton, the county seat of Van Zandt County, and home of the First Monday Trade Days .

Gilmer Texas Things to Do

The City of Gilmer is located in Upshur County, Texas, northeast of Tyler, south of Mt. Pleasant. It is located on U.S. Highway 271, and also Texas highways 154 and 155.

Gilmer is known for being the home of the East Texas Yamboree , a four-day event held annually during the third weekend of October. It celebrates the popular crop grown in the area, the sweet potato, or the "yam".

Four miles west of Gilmer is Lake Gilmer .

Gladewater Attractions

We love to visit Gladewater, just a quick drive north of Tyler on U.S. Highway 271, and only 13 miles west of Longview on U.S. 80.

It's a great place for exploring East Texas history, and is known for its large number of antique stores, antique malls, and festivals.

Gladewater features a number of restaurants and bed and breakfast inns. Well known festivals include the East Texas Gusher Days in April, the Roundup Rodeo in June, and the Arts and Crafts Festival in September.

A visit to the Gladewater Museum is also recommended. Located just north of town is Lake Gladewater .

Groveton Attractions

Recreational activities near Groveton abound as Davy Crockett National Forest is a haven for deer hunters, campers, and others desiring to enjoy the outdoors.  It is named for the legendary pioneer, and contains more than 160,000 acres of East Texas woodlands, streams, recreation areas, and wildlife habitat. Located in Houston and Trinity Counties, the forest is centrally located within the Neches and Trinity River basins. The Ratcliff Lake Recreation Area, built in 1936 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, surrounds a 45-acre lake.

Lake Livingston and the Trinity River are nearby for boating and fishing activities.

Henderson Texas Tourism and Attractions

Downtown features an active Henderson Main Street Program , and has a number of antique stores and historic markers in the National Register Downtown Historic Square. The first building in Henderson was constructed in 1838.

Upscale shopping, eateries, antiques, floral, dolls, custom jewelry and more are found in stores and boutiques downtown. Henderson also has a variety of restaurants and shopping on Highway US 79/259, the main artery through town.

Henderson features a number of activities and events, such as the Heritage Syrup Festival staged during the 2nd Saturday of November, the Antique Tractor Show, Fourth of July parade, and Downtown at Christmas.

It has both spring and fall festivals, and a Christmas parade and home tour. Popular attractions include the Howard Dickinson House Museum , the Depot Museum Complex of nine buildings which houses a county history museum and a children's discovery center, and the Monte Verdi Plantation.

The countryside around Henderson features rolling hills and many lakes, and wildflower trails dot the surrounding area. The trails are usually at their peaks between April 15 - May 31 of each year.

Just west of Henderson is Joinerville, site of the discovery of the great East Texas Oil Field in 1930 at the Joiner Daisy Bradford No. 3 well . A popular historical destination is the Gaston Museum in Joinerville.

Jacksonville Texas Area Attractions and Things to Do

Jacksonville is known as the "Tomato Capital of the World" from a time when the area was a huge producer and shipper of tomatoes. The Tomato Bowl, a WPA project, is the home of the Jacksonville High School "Fightin' Indians" football and soccer teams.

Annual Jacksonville events include the "Tomato Fest" celebration and the "Tops in Texas Rodeo" in July.

The Tomato Fest is held annually in Jacksonville, the Home of the World's Largest Bowl of Salsa . It is located at the corner of Commerce and Austin Streets. Events include Tomato Eating Contest, Soccer and Fishing Tournaments, Farmers Market, Salsa Contest, Chili's Street Dance, and more, with over 200 vendors!

Lake Jacksonville, built in 1957, is located three miles southwest of Jacksonville and covers an area of 1,320 acres.

It is the city's main water source and a popular destination for boating, fishing, and other outdoor activities, both for residents and tourists. In the area are also located Lake Tyler and Lake Palestine .

Just north of the City of Jacksonville, Texas is Love's Lookout . At an elevation of 713 feet, it has long been known for its spectacular views to the east, on clear days as far as 30-35 miles.

Love's Lookout Scenic Park is a great place for walking or for family picnics, and includes a 5,500  square foot facility with restrooms, vending machines, an information center and a sheriff's sub-station.

Located nearby is the Lavender RV Park and Lavender Farm . The park has 24 RV spaces that serve even long RVs, both 30 amp and 50 amp with roomy pull thrus. It is located 5 miles south of Bullard off US Hwy 69. The park is only 8 miles from Lake Jacksonville and 9.9 miles from Lake Palestine, and 23 miles from lake Striker, giving easy access to three lakes. A place to park a boat and trailer is available, as are tent camping and picnic areas.

Also near Jacksonville is the Cherokee Trace Drive Thru Safari , a wildlife park that is home to an amazing variety of wildlife. See over a dozen exotic and endangered species that thrive in an open habitat similar to their native territory. At your own pace, enjoy a self-guided drive through the hills and open savannas of this 300-acre preserve.

Jasper Attractions

Jasper's historic town square features the courthouse built in 1889, bed & breakfasts, art galleries, outdoor art sculptures, antique shops, murals, and the old county jail where county archives are housed.

Annual events include the Azalea Festival in March, Air Show in April, Jasper Lions Club Rodeo in May, a Fourth of July Celebration, and the Fall Festival in October. 

Sandy Creek Park, downtown, features children's playground equipment, fishing ponds, walking trail, picnic areas, basketball courts, and a pavilion over the water.

Jefferson Texas

The City of Jefferson is the county seat of Marion County, Texas, north of Marshall and south of Linden . Nearby are the communities of Uncertain and Karnack .

It is located on U.S. Highway 59 and Texas Highway 49. The Jefferson Zip Code is 75657, and its Area Code is 903. Its population is about 2,000 residents.

Today, the city is a tourism center, with popular attractions including Jay Gould's railroad car, the Sterne Fountain, Jefferson Carnegie Library, Excelsior House, and the bayous formed by Big Cypress Bayou located in and around the city.

A trip to Jefferson is a journey back through time to a bustling 19th century riverport. Jefferson is a great locale with antique shops lining the original brick streets, horse-drawn carriage tours, and boat trips down the bayou.

Kilgore Texas Things to Do

Kilgore at one time boasted a single downtown city block with the densest concentration of oil derricks in the world. For more information on Kilgore and its impact on the oil and gas industry, we highly recommend visiting the renown East Texas Oil Museum in Kilgore on Highway 259 at Ross Street, on the campus of Kilgore College. Each Christmas, Kilgore lights up its derricks, helping the city maintain its title as the state's official "City of Stars." The lights are turned on the first Saturday after Thanksgiving and remain lit until after January 1. Downtown is also the site of the the Crim Theatre, which dates to the 1930s.

Kilgore is the site of Kilgore College , a well known institution of higher education, and home to the world famous Kilgore Rangerettes dance and drill team.

Livingston Things to Do

Polk County is known for being the gateway between the Texas Forest Country and Texas Gulf Coast Area; providing fishing, hunting, outdoor activities, antiquing, hometown restaurants and much, much more.

In the midst of the Big Thicket forest in Polk County, lies Texas' oldest Indian Reservation, home of the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas.

Marshall is well known for its " Wonderland of Lights ," one of the largest light festivals in the country when lit during the Christmas season, and the original and largest Christmas festival in Texas.

Each evening, visitors can enjoy more than a million lights located in hundreds of displays that showcase Marshall’s historic town square and the Street of Dreams.

Attractions include horse-drawn buggy rides, touring buses, ice skating rinks, snow globe, laser light shows, and more.

The Historic Harrison County Courthouse is the center of events, and visitors enjoy the nightly synchronized light and music shows. Festival activities take place throughout the city, but much of them take place in the downtown square. There is no cost to enjoy the synchronized light and sound show on the courthouse.

Marshall has more than 100 historical markers and medallions, such as the T&P Depot marker (see below), with several sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Many of Marshall's Victorian homes have been restored, and several function as B&Bs. Also fully restored is the Harrison County Courthouse .

Mineola Texas Attractions and Things to Do

The Mineola Nature Preserve was dedicated in March of 2011, and built at a cost of $1 million. This beautiful location consists of 2,911 acres on Loop 564 along the Sabine River, and has facilities including wetlands, numerous hiking and equestrian trails, bee hives, extraordinary bird-watching, and more for the outdoor enthusiast.

More than a dozen man-made ponds are located on the property as well as walking trails and pavilions.

The preserve is open daily, from 7 a.m. to sunset. It is home to 193 species of birds, wildlife, buffalo and longhorn cattle. Pullen Pond at the preserve includes water habitats and outdoor classrooms that can be used as teaching opportunities: small ponds, waterfalls and dams, a running stream, wetlands, and deep water and shallow water concepts.

Texas Fisheries stock the pond with catfish and East Texas Woods and Waters funded the construction of a fishing pier near the pond.

The Mineola Bigfoot Paddling Trail on the Sabine River is an 11 mile trail developed by the City of Mineola and Texas Parks & Wildlife, along with the Mineola Nature Preserve. The boat ramp is located on US 69 1.5 miles south of Mineola. The site is located on the west side of the road and the north side of the Sabine River. At 27,264 acres and 315 miles of shoreline, Lake Fork was designed to be a premier bass fishing lake and currently holds records for 34 out of the Top 50 largemouth bass caught in Texas. This popular lake located on the Sabine River in Hopkins, Rains and Wood Counties, 5 miles northwest of Quitman, and north of Mineola. It was impounded in 1980, and today reaches a depth of 70 feet.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A $12 billion passenger bullet train linking Las Vegas and the Los Angeles area was dubbed the first true high-speed rail line in the nation on Monday, with the private company building it predicting millions of ticket-buyers will be boarding trains by 2028.

“People have been dreaming of high-speed rail in America for decades,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg before taking a stage with union representatives and company officials at the future site of a terminal to be built just south of the Las Vegas Strip. “It’s really happening this time.”

Buttigieg cited Biden administration support for the project that he said will bring thousands of union jobs, boost local economies and cut traffic and air pollution.

Brightline West, whose sister company  already operates a fast train  between Miami and Orlando in Florida, aims to lay 218 miles (351 kilometers) of new track almost all in the median of Interstate 15 between Las Vegas and Rancho Cucamonga, California. It would link there with a commuter rail connection to downtown Los Angeles. A station also is planned in San Bernardino County’s Victorville area.

Company officials say the goal is to have trains exceeding speeds of 186 mph (300 kph) — comparable to  Japan’s Shinkansen  bullet trains — operating in time for the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028.

“I believe we’ll look back at today and say, ‘This was the birth of an industry of high-speed rail,’” Brightline Holdings founder Wes Edens said Monday.

The company aims to link U.S. cities that are too near each other for air travel to make sense and too far for people to drive.

Las Vegas has no Amtrak service. The idea of a bullet train to Los Angeles dates back decades under various names including DesertXpress. Brightline West acquired the project in 2019, and company and public officials say it has all required right-of-way and environmental approvals, along with labor agreements.

Brightline received Biden administration backing including a  $3 billion grant  from federal infrastructure funds and recent  approval to sell  another $2.5 billion in tax-exempt bonds. The company won federal authorization in 2020 to sell $1 billion in similar bonds.

Brightline West says electric-powered trains will cut the four-hour trip across the Mojave Desert to a little more than two hours. It projects 11 million one-way passengers per year, with fares that Edens said will be comparable to airline ticket costs. The trains will offer rest rooms, Wi-Fi, food and beverage sales and the option to check luggage.

Officials hope the train line will relieve congestion on I-15, where drivers often sit in miles of crawling traffic while returning home to Southern California from a Las Vegas weekend. An average of more than  44,000 automobiles per day  crossed the California-Nevada state line on I-15 in 2023, according to Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority data.

Florida-based Brightline Holdings’  Miami-line debuted  in 2018 and expanded service to Orlando International Airport last September with trains reaching speeds up to 125 mph (200 kph). It offers 16 round-trips per day with one-way tickets for the 235-mile (378-kilometer) distance costing about $80.

Other fast trains in the U.S. include Amtrak’s Acela, which can top 150 mph (241 kph) between Boston and Washington, D.C. But fast train connections for other U.S. cities have been floated, including  Dallas to Houston ;  Atlanta to Charlotte, North Carolina ;  Chicago to St. Louis ; and  Seattle to Portland, Oregon.  Most have faced delays.

In California, a proposed 500-mile (805-kilometer) rail line linking Los Angeles and San Francisco was approved by voters in 2008, but has been beset by  rising costs and routing disputes . A 2022 business plan by the California High-Speed Rail Authority projected the  cost had more than tripled  to $105 billion.

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas - A south Texas city has been named to Money Magazine's 50 Best Places to Live in the U.S. list. 

"This year’s Best Places to Live list celebrates cities and towns where a thriving economy meets affordability, diversity and an exceptional quality of life," reads the magazine.

New Braunfels, about 30 minutes northeast of San Antonio, was the only Texas city to make the list.

Money cited the area's affordable real estate and booming job market.

The home of Schlitterbahn added 39,000 jobs in 2023, according to recent reports .

Moody's Analytics predicts the job market in New Braunfels will grow 21% by 2028, more than any other U.S. city.
