Best time to visit egypt.

Egypt is blessed with lots of sunshine and very little rain. Generally, the hottest months are June to August, and the coolest month is January. Rainfall is negligible, except on the coast, with rain usually occurring during the winter months (December to March).

During the summer months (from June to August), daily temperatures can reach over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius) - perfect for snorkeling and soaking up the sun on the beaches of Sinai, but can prove challenging for some in the crowded streets and souqs of Cairo.

Choose to escape the crowds by traveling from March to May or September to November when the weather is milder, and there's the opportunity to experience Egypt during Ramadan and the celebrations of Eid (which marks the breaking of the fast). If you are planning to travel during Ramadan, it's important to consider that many restaurants and shops will either be closed or operating at reduced hours.

Culture and customs

Life in Egypt has been in a state of flux since the 2011 revolution. Many of the issues that motivated so many to take to the streets in protest continue to be points of contention, but Egyptians remain hopeful, relying on religion, family and humor to get them through, like they have for thousands of years. A strong sense of community binds people across the country. Families and communities support each other and there is a prevailing sense that everyone is in it together. For all these reasons, most express great pride in being Egyptian, despite their nation’s recent turmoil.

As a largely Muslim country (about 90% of the population is Muslim while most of the remaining 10% identify as Coptic Christian), Islam permeates daily activities. Life revolves around the five daily prayers and everything is closed on Friday, the Muslim holy day. A wide array of cultural norms, including how people dress and interact with the opposite sex, are influenced by religion. Women are largely defined by their role as a mother and matron of the house, whereas men are expected to be the provider.

Many Egyptians consider their country the gateway between the West and the rest of the Arab world, and take pride in their ability to mix tradition with modern influences. This mixing is most apparent in major cities, such as Cairo and Alexandria, where American fast-food chains can be found next to traditional cafes, secular attitudes are more common, and pop music rings through city streets.

Food and drink

With fragrant spices, fresh fruit and vegetables, and delicious sweets on offer, culinary adventures in Egypt are guaranteed. On many Intrepid trips you'll be given the opportunity to dine with a local family – this offers a great chance to see how meals are prepared and learn more about the ingredients.

Things to try in Egypt

1. Hamam mahshi

A north African delicacy, hamam – roasted pigeon stuffed with cracked wheat and rice – can be found on the menu of most traditional Egyptian restaurants. You may need a few to fill up though, as they don’t contain a lot of meat. And be careful of all the tiny bones.

2. Ta'ameya (falafel)

Crunchy on the outside, and moist on the inside, these deep-fried balls of spiced fava beans are a Middle Eastern vegetarian staple. Usually served in a pita with salad, pickles, and sesame-based tahina - buy it at a street stall for a quick, cheap meal.

Shops specializing in this popular ‘poor man’s dish’ can be found throughout Cairo. A hearty mix of rice, macaroni and lentils, chickpeas, and fried onions, koshary is topped with a tomato-vinegar sauce.

4. Ful medames

Don't leave Egypt without trying the classic dish of ful medames, which can be traced back to pharaonic times. Consisting of slow-cooked fava beans, served with olive oil, parsley, garlic, and lemon juice - add some spice by seasoning with chili paste and eat with bread.

5. Pastries

Delicious, sweet pastries are found in restaurants, markets, and cafes in Egypt. Never was there a better time to live by the adage ‘Life is short, eat dessert first’.

Egypt is a mostly Muslim country, and any consumption of alcohol here is relatively low-key. There are many fantastic alternatives. Juice stands are common on main streets offering freshly squeezed banana, guava, or mango juice. Karkadai is a chilled, crimson drink brewed from hibiscus leaves (served hot in the winter). And tea (or shai) is the beverage of choice for most Egyptians, which is sipped throughout the day and with meals.

Geography and environment

Located in the northeast corner of Africa, Egypt shares its borders with Israel and the Palestinian Territories, Libya, and Sudan, as well as the Mediterranean Sea to the north and the Red Sea to the east. The two seas are connected by the man-made Suez Canal.

The remote triangle-shaped peninsula is largely characterized by limestone and desert, but also has a vibrant coral reef along the Red Sea coastline. Hot, dry desert covers most of the country’s terrain, with the Western Desert occupying much of the west, and the Arabian (or Eastern) Desert stretching the length of the eastern coast. These two regions are dissected by the Nile River, which runs the length of the country, emptying into the Mediterranean Sea. The Nile Valley, a narrow fertile band extending from the river, is the country’s only fertile land and where 98% of the population lives.

History and government

Recent history.

Napoleon Bonaparte, the infamous pint-sized French leader, invaded Egypt in 1798, seeking to set up a French colony. However, not long after, the French were repelled, and Egypt became a part of the Ottoman Empire once again.

From 1882, the British Army occupied Egypt to protect the Suez Canal. Muhammad Ali officially ruled from the early 1800s, and his family and successors continued to rule for decades (alongside and during British occupation) until overthrown by a military coup in 1952.

During World War II, Egypt became a crucial element in Britain's defense. The Italian Army tried to advance into Egypt in 1940 but was stopped by the British Army at Mersa Matruh. Egypt continued to serve as a vital base for British troops during World War II and despite the disruption, Egypt's shopkeepers and retail trade benefitted from the thousands of Allied troops staying in Egypt.

In 1953, Egypt was officially declared a republic, and a year later, Colonel Nasser was declared Prime Minister, then President. In 1979, after decades of confrontation with neighboring Israel, the historic Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty was signed. This agreement made Egypt the first Arab country to officially recognize Israel as a country - a significant step in the peace process. More recently, in February 2011, large-scale protests and mass demonstrations resulted in the removal of President Mubarak after decades of autocratic rule.

Early history

Ancient Egypt has been the focus of much fascination, investigation, speculation, and intrigue. It's hard to escape the education system without having studied Ancient Egypt in some way. Drawn in by the mighty pyramids, mysterious hieroglyphics, distinct burial rituals and animal-headed gods - scholars, students, historians, and travelers are all amazed by this civilization which has endured cycles of dynastic rule, invasion, and natural disasters.

Through key archaeological finds, historians have been able to unravel some of the mysteries of this great land. What is known is that the daily life of the average Egyptian usually involved working in agriculture with the waters of the Nile providing fertile ground for planting crops. Egyptians usually lived in modest homes with children and domestic pets. Professions were usually inherited - so if your father was a farmer, then so were you.

While most Egyptians led simple lives, dynasties of Pharaohs led lavish lifestyles, with the most well-known being Ramses II, Hatshepsut, Akhenaten, Tutankhamun, and Cleopatra. Huge monuments, imposing pyramids, golden artifacts, and detailed paintings all hold details about pharaonic rule and succession, as well as commonly held beliefs about religion and the afterlife.

Spanning centuries and full of drama worthy of a soap opera, the epic history of Ancient Egypt is complex and we suggest you read about it before visiting.

Top 10 ancient wonders of Egypt

1. grand designs.

The original grand design - monumental and magnificent - the Pyramids of Giza are an impressive achievement in ancient engineering. Towering above the desert sands and standing proudly for centuries, the first glimpse of these stunning structures will render visitors breathless.

2. Stony enigma

Be captivated by the mysterious aura of the Great Sphinx of Giza. This monolithic mythical beast possesses a lion’s body and a human head - and has sat quietly in the desert sands for eons. Gaze at the Sphinx and try to work out the riddle of its existence.

3. Mighty Nile River

No trip to Egypt is complete without visiting the Nile River - the life force of Egypt that has flowed for centuries. A provider of irrigation, an essential travel route, home to hippos and crocodiles, and now a source of leisure for locals and travelers alike, the Nile is an aquatic link to Egypt’s ancient heritage.

4. Terrific temples

Discover an enormous open-air museum like no other. The awe-inspiring Temples of Karnak are filled with stately statues, immense columns, and gigantic gateways. Explore this intriguing site and be left in no doubt about the brilliance of the ancient Egyptian civilization.

5. Holy mountain

Embark on a trek to the top of Mt Sinai and witness an incredible golden sunrise to remember. A place of worship for many faiths, a pilgrimage to Mt Sinai reveals stunning scenery, an ancient monastery and historic chapels. An iconic highlight of Egypt for believers and non-believers alike, Mt Sinai is not to be missed.

6. Double happiness

Located in the Nile Valley, the unique Temple of Kom Ombo is a ‘double temple’ and a rare archaeological find. Dedicated to two gods, a visit here is a true highlight of an Egyptian escapade. Marvel at the well-preserved wall reliefs, try to decipher the hieroglyphics and honour the craftsmen who created this wonder.

7. Museum magic

Step into a dazzling world of antiquity at the Egyptian Museum. Be amazed by the glittering treasures recovered from King Tutankhamun’s tomb – with jewelry, furniture, chariots and that famous gold funerary mask, this pharaoh was certainly prepared for the afterlife.

8. Roman ruins

The Roman ruins of Kom el-Dikka in Alexandria may not be the biggest, but they are certainly among the best-preserved in Egypt, if not the world. Soak up the atmosphere of the Roman amphitheater and imagine it in all its glory - packed with 800 spectators ready for action.

9. Colossal characters

Near the modern city of Luxor stand the imposing Colossi of Memnon. These massive stone statues of Amenhotep III, while badly damaged, still maintain an unmistakable air of authority. Stand below them and be dwarfed by the scale of these tremendous figures.

10. The ancient heart of Cairo

Wander the cobbled streets of Islamic Cairo and uncover the ancient heart of this chaotic city. Admire mosques, palaces and houses, and peruse the goods on offer at one of the world’s oldest bazaars. Dating back to medieval times, the Khan al-Khalili bazaar is where people have traded goods for centuries.

Souqs – or open-air bazaars – are both the best place to shop in Egypt and attractions in their own right. The biggest and most famous souq is the 500-year-old Khan El Khalili Bazaar in Cairo. Within the maze of narrow streets and laneways lie stalls selling jewelry, glass, copper, spices and artisan goods, along with more standard tourist fare. Quality can vary greatly so spend some time shopping around.

Like many markets around the world, bargaining is the norm, but Egyptians take it to another level. Expect to be offered tea (it can take that long) and for elaborate theatrics from the seller. While bazaars in Cairo tend to sell everything, visit Aswan’s bazaar for spices, incense, and basketwork, and Luxor for cheaply priced alabaster figurines and vases. It's also a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country.

Things to buy in Egypt

You’ll often see spices piled high in bazaars. In addition to making a great photo for Instagram, they’re often a good buy as long as you keep a couple of things in mind. Always buy whole spices rather than ground to ensure freshness and skip the ‘saffron’ – it’s actually safflower and tastes like dust.

2. Glassware

Hand-blown Muski glass, recognizable by its air bubbles, comes in brilliant shades of blue and green and purple and has been made in Egypt since medieval times. Be careful with this purchase though as it’s extremely fragile.

3. Cartouche

A kind of nameplate written in hieroglyphics. Most gold or silver shops sell these and many can customize them by engraving your name.

Festivals and events

Eid al-fitr.

After fasting for an entire month, Muslims celebrate the end of Ramadan with Eid al-Fitr, or ‘Feast of Breaking the Fast’. For three days, starting on the first day of the tenth month of the lunar calendar, people celebrate with feasts, family, and festivals. Look for vendors selling kahk cookies (nut-filled cookies covered in powdered sugar) while taking in the festivities, a tasty treat synonymous with Eid for many locals.

Eid al-Adha

Arguably the most important holiday in Egypt, the ‘Feast of Sacrifice’ is not one for vegetarians and vegans. About 70 days after Eid al-Fitr, sheep, and goats are slaughtered (often in the middle of the street) for a mighty feast.

Sham el-Nessim

Each year on March 21st, Egyptians celebrate the coming of spring by spending the day outdoors. Join the locals for this ancient holiday by packing a picnic and heading to a park or public garden.

Abu Simbel Sun Festival

As if the two temples dedicated to Ramses II and Queen Nefertari weren’t impressive enough, they were constructed in such a way that twice a year, the sun’s rays reach its innermost chambers and illuminate three stone gods that reside within, while leaving Ptah (god of the underworld) in the dark. And those days just happen to be Ramses’s birthday (October 21) and coronation (February 21). Coincidence? We think not.

What to wear in Egypt

Summer temperatures can get very high, so light fabrics like linen, cotton and athletic gear made to take the heat are best. If you’re traveling outside of winter, don’t underestimate the cool change that can come in the evenings, especially if you’re spending the night in the desert or on a Nile cruise. Avoid packing anything in white – desert dust will quickly turn those light-colored clothes a not-so-delightful shade of brown.

In Egypt, the standard voltage is 220 V and the power plugs and sockets are of type C and F. The standard frequency is 50 Hz.

Queen Cleopatra - 7 days Tour

Queen Cleopatra - 7 days

We had an unforgettable experience on this tour! It was amazing from start to finish. Our driver Bob was so lovely, making us feel safe in the crazy Cairo/Giza traffic! He gave us water and chocolate on arrival and departure which was such a nice touch. We met with Taher and Mohammed on our first night and Taher explained what was in store for the week. Koop was our tour guide in Cairo who was very knowledgeable and engaging. Our only regret is that a e would have enjoyed some free time at the pyramids to fully take it in but Koop was very kind to take lovely photos of us. We got to see how papyrus was made and visit an oil/perfume shop which were very interesting experiences. Just a heads up that you can feel obliged to purchase at times, especially in a small group, however the products are lovely and great to bring something traditional home. Personally we would have liked to have known about this as we had just thought we were getting a tour of the local workshops. Anas was our guide for the remainder of our trip, many thanks to him for a well run few days. It made our lives so much easier having all of the trips to temples etc arranged, and hearing all of the information from Anas. Anas was very much on top of scheduling and asked us for our preferences for what we wanted to do and when we wanted to do it. We had busy days with early starts for temple visits and the hot air balloon but it was so worth every second of it! Anas always ensured we knew what the plan was, arranged wake up calls and made sure we had plenty of water! The cruise was a great experience, lovely room, very attentive staff and a great selection of tasty food. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. The only disappointing part of the tour was the sound and light show at Karnak temple. This was an optional tour which was quite expensive for what it was, the quality of the show was very disappointing so wouldn’t recommend. However the temple itself is spectacular and thoroughly enjoyed returning the next morning to see it in all its beauty. Being the largest temple of the trip it was extremely impressive from it’s towering obelisks to the peaceful sacred lake. The hot air balloon was breathtaking! An amazing experience which spectacular views! Watching the sun rise over the river Nile is a once in a lifetime experience. We also really enjoyed our trip to the Nubian village, it was very interesting to see this aspect of Egyptian culture and their pet crocodiles! We had a school lesson on Arabic and Nubian languages and how to spell and pronounce letters and our own names. We were also treated to some fresh local breads and an array of dips. We were given a complimentary horse and carriage tour of Luxor which was a lovely surprise and really appreciated Anas’ time for joining us after the tour had finished! He also treated us to a sugarcane drink which we had never tried before but it was delicious and very refreshing. Just to note that the tour guides tips aren’t included in the tipping paid online so this could be made more explicit to be aware of factoring in these tips too. Overall this was an amazing trip and couldn’t recommend highly enough. Thanks for making it such a special trip!

Essential Egypt (5 Star Hotels) Tour

Essential Egypt (5 Star Hotels)

The whole tour was very well organised. Our guide Mo was very knowledgeable and passionate about the places we went to see. He knew all the tips and tricks to miss the crowds and how to deal with the locals trying to sell us their wares at each of the temples, even giving tips on how to barter and how much to pay. He was also very efficient at keeping us all on time and making sure that time wasn't wasted by waiting for people to get back to the coach. The tour ticked off all the places we wanted to see and in our case my husband wanted to also see the Bent and Red pyramids - Bishoo from TravelTalk dealt with all the arrangements to make sure he got to visit them on our last day. This was our first time doing a tour and it was a very positive experience, As a result we will be looking at what other tours TravelTalk run around the world for future trips. Can highly recommend this tour for discovering Essential Egypt and especially TravelTalk.

I liked Mo a lot, and his talks at the sites and on the bus were both interesting and balanced in content and in length. I know that a lot of tourists don't really care for any in-depth discussion of what they are seeing, but Mo was able to answer many of my harder questions with good educated answers. Likewise, he was very efficient in his use of time on the bus and at the sites. I felt that the trip was well constructed and managed, and I rarely had to clarify about our arrangements. He did a good job of telling us ahead of time what to expect. Perhaps one of the most crucial arrangements that Mo managed was the seamless embarkation/disembarkation of the sleeper trains in Cairo, Aswan and Luxor. There is a LOT going on with that, and I was impressed how he managed to keep all 30+ of us on-target in a busy and chaotic environment. No bags or people were lost! Another case that sticks out is his handling of the myriad of different tour packages, transfers, and hotel arrangements that occurred. I understand that this is all “part of the job”, but I nevertheless think it is a very important part of what makes a good tour guide. Mo handled this very nicely. Yes, I would travel with Mo again, and that's the substance of a good review I think! Thaddeus

One of the good journeys I've taken, it exposed us to a language and culture quite distinct from Western norms. We also witnessed remarkable ancient sites, including Karnak Temple and Abu Simbel, and enjoyed thrilling activities like a hot air balloon ride and snorkeling in the Red Sea.

I enjoyed my recent Egypt trip with Vacations To Go Travel, just as my travel companion did! Bassem, our guide, was excellent, and the Nile cruise was unforgettable. However, the early start for day tours left me feeling exhausted, especially during Ramadan when daytime hours were shorter. Despite this, both my friends and I enjoyed the trip immensely. Thank you! - Jia Li

To Whom it may concern, this letter is being sent to issue the award for EXCELLANCE. my name is Oweda " Weasy " Gerald. my family, son Andrew " Dru " Gerald and daughter Rachel " Rae " Gerald selected Egypt for our family vacation. our transportation was ready and waiting for us @ the airport. we arrived on a late flight. We missed the meet and greet session. we were escorted to our room and received a call to return to the lobby. Mudi was there waiting to give us 3 the " meet and greet " we developed a fast friendship because he returned back to the hotel just for us. he escorted us to the dinning room where we had a pleasant interaction. also informed that we were waiting for another couple who arrived after us. we dined and received our morning instruction. By day 3 , our group became so close that we named our group " the Mudies ". ( of course I adopted him on the spot !!!! ) the following information are acts of kindness shown to group members that were only made public by those who receive great love and selflessness . this is Mudi . 1.) he made arrangement for a couple's lost luggage to be waiting for them when we arrived @ a tour destination. 2.) my late mothers camera slid out of my pocket , got stuck between bus seats on tour bus.my Kids mentioned it to Mudi. my camera was waiting for me @ the next hotel. 3.) one of our group members arrived ill and Mudi took him straight to the hospital , stayer with him and got all his prescription medication. once his health care services were complete , Mudi brought him to the hotel. We have traveled to all continents except the south pole over the years and Mudi is , by far the most AWESOME and WONDERFUL guide EVER. I saved the best for last. our farewell dinner happened to fall on my 62nd birthday. no one know but my children. guess what ??? I had a surprise party there on the spot with singing and dancing !! Mudi gave group attention as well as one-on-one attention. this is why he should be recognized as the tour guide of the year or of the century !! His devout and loving dedication to us and those before us should earn him this great honor. Respectfully Submitted, the entire Gerald Family.

What people love about Fully Guided Tours in Egypt

Queen Cleopatras is a great tour, highly recommended, Anas is a great guide, he explained everything about Egyptian culture and toke care about our group! I will recommend to head office to deliver schedules with the tours to be able to plan our days. Cruse was amazing, service is great and everyone is very friendly! Also there is laundry available at your room! Ruby II is a great option, the room is very nice! I won’t recommend to take the train from Cairo to Aswan, service is great but services are not good (very old and dirty), washrooms very dirty!
Our guide, Mina, was very knowledgable and helpful when you wanted to find specific things. The accommodations were great, the river cruise was fantastic. Do the trip to Abu Simbal and the Nubian village dinner, it's 100% worth it. It would have been nice to do a tour in Hurghada of the Museum (which is worth the 20 minute walk), the mosque and the church.

Planning Your Trip To Egypt 2024 /2025?

egypt tour pl

Egypt is a country that you can visit at any time of the year as it offers plenty of sunshine and minimal rain however, the ideal months to visit Egypt are from September to November and March to May as the weather is mild and the temperatures are pleasant.

The summer months which are from June to August usually mean that the temperatures get very high. This is perfect weather for soaking up the sun’s rays and snorkelling however. From October to February which is Egypt’s winter months, the weather is cooler with the chance of some rain.  In comparison to most European countries, the temperatures are still warm and activities such as diving can be done year round.

It is likely that the Great Pyramids make your travel bucket list, but it really should be all of Egypt, for there’s so much more it offers. In these fast-moving times, travel to a land that symbolises the very meaning of the word ancient. And for the best version of the experience, plan it all based on the best season to go to Egypt.

Naturally, climatic conditions and annual seasons are the most important factors to consider, as venturing outdoors under the sweltering desert heat is not the most comfortable experience. While the cooler seasons are simply ideal! Then there’s also the yearly festivals and celebrations that determine the best time to visit Egypt. Like the month of Ramadan, when food and local transport is affected. As such, the country welcomes tourists throughout the year, but it’s always better to schedule your vacation to suit your personal travel needs.

Most visitors to Egypt are required to have a visa, which can be arranged through Egyptian consulates worldwide, online via the official website: https://www.visa2egypt.gov.eg/, or upon arrival at the Cairo International Airport.

Visitors from the UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the EU may purchase their visa stamp upon arrival in Egypt. South Africans need to arrange their Egyptian visa prior to arrival. Please note that single-entry tourist visa fee is USD 25 and it can only be paid in USD, GBP or Euro.

Travellers entering Egypt must have a passport valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date. This information is provided only as guidance, we strongly advise that you check with the consulate as this information can change at any time and with little notice. It is your responsibility to make sure that all the required travel documents are ready when travelling.

All visitors to Egypt need to obtain a visa to enter the country unless they are from a visa-exempt country. There are different types of entry visa to Egypt: the visa on arrival, and the Egypt e-Visa. The Egypt visa on arrival has been available for a long time. It is possible to obtain one at the Egyptian border.

Egypt’s culture is a fusion of both the ancient times and the modern today. The culture of Egypt has thousands of years of chronicled history with Egypt being amongst one of the initial civilisations. This can be seen through its impressive monuments, sites, architecture and artwork. Although this is still evident in Egypt, the influence of modern culture is apparent in the main cities such as Cairo and Alexandria where the likes of internet and television have opened the Egyptians eyes up to the Western world of different ideas such as music, fashion and literature. Though this may be the case, Egyptian’s firmly hold onto their traditions and customs.

However, there are also a lot of Christians in Egypt where the greater part belongs to the Coptic Orthodox Church, the dominate religion in Egypt before Islam.  Whichever religion, religion in Egypt controls many parts of societal life, is permitted by the law and life entails daily prayer.  The religious holidays of Ramadan and Eid are the most significant events for Muslims.

The Egyptians believed that joy and happiness were legitimate goals of life and regarded home and family as the major source of delight.” Because of this belief, women enjoyed a higher prestige in Egypt than in any other culture of the ancient world.

When you visit Egypt, it is an essential part of experiencing the country by trying the food and drink. Egyptian food is a combination of Turkish, Syrian, Lebanese, Greek and French cuisines, adapted to match what the locals like. Street stalls and eateries provide dishes that are tasty, simple and cheap whereas restaurants offer a wider variety of dishes and are more expensive. Nonetheless, getting the opportunity to taste a broad assortment of Egyptian food is what it’s all about. The array of spices, vegetables, fruit and meat that is prepared so different to how you’re used to makes a trip to Egypt unique. Egypt’s countrywide beverage is tea (shai) and is very much part of their everyday lives.

Traditional Egyptian Food And Beverages Includes…

  • Ful Medames. Ful medames, also known simply as ful, competes with kushari as Egyptian most famous dish. ...
  • Famous all over the world, Hummus is another open act in every Egyptians table. ...
  • Baba Ganoush. ...
  • Mesaqa'ah. ...
  • Shorbet Ads. ...

Ramadan: Ramadan is perhaps the most important holiday in Egypt. It occurs on the ninth month of the Muslim lunar year and is a time of blessings and prayers to honour the revelation of the first verses of the Qur'an to the Prophet Muhammad. Ramadan is also a time of fasting where Muslims evade food and drink from sunrise to sunset throughout the month.

Eid al-Fitr: Eid al-Fitre signifies the end of the month of Ramadan or in other words is a festival for the breaking of the fast. In many of the cities there are big celebrations for this and a lot of feasting. Many Egyptians who can afford it, take time to travel and others gather in the streets waiting for sheep and cows to be slaughtered after the Morning Prayer when the holiday arrives.

Abu Simbel Festival: Ramses II created a large temple at Abu Simbel so that the internal chamber would light up twice a year; in February, on the day he took the throne and in October, the anniversary of his birthday. Every year the Abu Simbel Festival draws a crowd before sunrise to witness the jet of light progressively creeping through the stone and enlightening the sculptures of Ramses, Ra and Amun in the central chamber.

Here are just a few of the key religious events, contemporary festivals and folklore celebrations to keep in mind when you're planning your Egyptian adventure.

  • Coptic Orthodox Christmas.
  • Abu Simbel Sun Festival (February)
  • Coptic Orthodox Easter.
  • Sham Ennessim.

Spring (March–May) and autumn (Oct & Nov) are the best times to visit Egypt, when it’s hot but not debilitating so. In summer (June–Sept) the south and desert are ferociously hot and the pollution in Cairo is at its worst, with only the coast offering a respite from the heat. During this time, sightseeing is best limited to early morning or afternoon “Historical places are opening almost from 06:00 to 17:00”. In winter (Dec–Feb), most places are reasonably warm during the day, but chilly at night, while the desert can get very cold indeed. The Mediterranean Coast can be windy and wet in winter.

If weather is your primary concern, it is clear now that the best time to visit Egypt is during the northern hemisphere fall, winter or early spring (October to April), when temperatures are cooler but you are still guaranteed sun. To avoid the crowds at ancient sites like the Pyramids of Giza, Luxor, Aswan and Abu Simbel, try to avoid peak season (Christmas and New Year holidays). Tourism in Egypt is booming this time of the year so make sure you plan in advance.

To avoid roaming charges, it's probably best to buy a local SIM card in Egypt. Local SIM cards can be used on most unlocked phones from Europe, Asia and Australia and some unlocked phones from North America, but because Egypt's mobile phones run on a GSM network, a lot of cellphones from the US may not work. You'll still be able to access WI-FI when it's available, but a mobile plan may not be an appropriate way to get connected.

For most other travelers, picking up a local SIM is probably your least expensive course of action. Egypt has four main telecommunications providers – Orange, Vodafone, Etisalat and WE – and you can visit one of their kiosks or stores to get a SIM card. Here, they may ask for a passport and confirmation of address, then you will be able to get your mobile connected.

The currency in Egypt is the Egyptian pound (EGP, E£ or LE). You don't have to change money before arriving in Egypt. Money exchange service is easily available through banks and the Money exchange bureau. You will get a better rate for your USD, Euro or Sterling pounds, etc. in Egypt.

Many travelers like to arrive with some local money to pay for initial expenses. Booking at Nile Holiday programs will include the prices of accommodation, transportation and some meals depends on your requested tour package. However, don’t plan on exchanging all the cash you’ll need for your trip to Egypt before you arrival. You can bring up to 10,000 USD or the equivalent in foreign currency and then swap it for Egyptian pounds at a currency exchange. Currency exchanges are found in all airports and many big hotels. Banks will also exchange foreign notes. Tour operators and hotels actually prefer to be paid in dollars, Euros so consider keeping some notes aside. Of course, exchange rates are subject to constant change. For the most up-to-date rates use an online currency converter like XE com

Egypt is a desert country that means the climate will be hot, sunny and dry.

Summer temperatures in southern cities like Luxor and Aswan can reach heights of 50°C (122°F) and don’t always drop at night. So, Light fabrics like linen, cotton and athletic gear made to take the heat are best. Just remember to cover up from your shoulders to below the knee.

Women are expected to dress more conservatively than men, for visits to mosques, female travelers should wear clothing that covers from ankle to elbow as well as decolletage and hair. Aside from mosque visits, you don’t have to cover your head. But being culturally sensitive by covering up is expected and respectful. The people of Egypt are well aware that not all people travelling are Muslim. If you want to swim, you can pack your regular swimsuit. All hotels with pools that cater to foreigners do not have dress codes.

Winters are generally mild, although temperatures can fall below 10°C (50°F) at night. If you’re travelling in winter, don’t underestimate the cool change that can come in the evenings, especially if you’re spending the night in the desert or on a Nile cruise. A light fleece or jacket should be sufficient to keep you warm on Egypt’s chillier nights specially at the end of December and January.

  • Long, baggy skirts and/or pants
  • Long-sleeved t-shirts
  • Wide-brimmed hat
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Power adapter
  • Spare batteries/charger
  • Bathing suit
  • A scarf or shawl for women to cover their hair when visiting mosques
  • A light fleece or jacket if travelling outside of summer
  • All Travel documents
  • The below packing list should be used as a guide only and is not intended to be a complete packing list to suit every one.
  • If you have any questions about what to pack, please get in touch with us.

Tipping is customary for pretty much all services in Egypt. If you’re happy with the service provided by waiters, drivers and other workers, leaving a small tip is a good way to show your appreciation. For smaller purchases, rounding up the bill or not asking for any change is an appropriate way of leaving a tip. The amount you tip in Egypt will depend on where you are and what type of services you’re buying. As a general rule, expect to tip around 5-10% of your bill. Tipping encourages excellent service in the future and is an entrenched feature of the tourism industry. Carrying small notes in the local currency will make tipping easier in Egypt. Of course, you are free to tip more or less as you see fit, depending on your perception of service quality and the length of your trip. Remember, a tip is not compulsory and should only be given when you receive excellent service

Shopping in Egypt is one of the most important experiences where all the beautiful natural and man-made artifacts which include jewellery, leatherwork, cotton textiles, glassware, brass and copperware are in your reach at very affordable prices. The Shisha, the traditional Egyptian waterpipe, a large collection of backgammon boards, decorative boxes, and many other handicrafts made by local artisans are spread all over the touristic markets in Egypt. Some of the fantastic local markets that you can explore on your trip to Egypt are the Khan El Khalili Bazaars in Cairo, the tourists market in Luxor, Aswan, Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh.

Cairo’s bazaars offer an infinite choice of jewellery, cotton textiles, leatherwork, glassware, brass and copperware, plus the world’s best selection of bellydancing costumes. The most popular souvenirs are Egyptian Papyrus Paper, the gold or silver cartouches with names in hieroglyphics. Alabaster figurines and vases are cheaper in the alabaster factories on Luxor’s west bank. While Aswan’s market is the best for spices, incense, basketwork, perfumes and natural essences and the elegant handmade perfume bottles are another popular souvenir.

Cotton textiles, the worldwide famous Egyptian cotton made products would be a good choice to buy in Egypt. Many shops, found in touristic and local markets and in large shopping malls sell pure cotton made shirts, trousers, and the famous traditional Galabeya, the Egyptian loose all in one robe. There are also some nice scarves, bed sheets, and bed covers sold almost everywhere in Egypt.

Complaints should be made to the Tourist Police. For assistance, contact your agent, guide or hotel reception.

Private Tours in Egypt 2023 – You Choose The Attractions

The Valley of the Kings

Travelers looking for Egypt luxury private tours that come with or without a fantastic Nile cruise can choose which famous, or even not so famous, ancient wonders they would like to visit; what level of accommodations they prefer, and even what kind of transportation they would like.

Most tours in Egypt will focus on historical sites or locations such as the Giza pyramids in Cairo; the Valley of Kings in Luxor; the Abu Simbel Temples near Aswan and etc. However, there are other areas of the country where private tours in Egypt may also be of benefit.

For example, the Sinai Peninsula and Red Sea areas are incredibly popular with beach goers and deep sea divers, and many SCUBA divers book private trips in Egypt to take them to the truly remarkable underwater locations along Egypt’s coast.

The Benefits Of Private Travel Packages

egypt tour pl

The benefit of a private Egypt tour over a group vacation to Egypt is – beside the fact that the price is almost the same, the level of service provided is generally so much better and more personal. A good quality private tour essentially provides visitors with a bespoke VIP experience. They receive the undivided attention and assistance of their allocated guide or guides throughout their stay in the country. This can really make for a remarkable experience at many levels.

For example, a private Egypt tour guide will accompany guests on visits to the marketplaces, helping them to negotiate prices for their purchases (which is something most vendors enjoy doing with their customers); they can give details that guide books don’t, and they can prevent you from experiencing problems that might arise due to language barriers. Above all, a good personal guide will make certain that each member of a private tour of Egypt is happy and comfortable.

Private Guided Tours Are Not Expensive

Private Egypt tours of the Egyptian Museum is what dreams are made of

Private guided Egypt tours does not necessarily mean a luxury tour however. Generally, many people travel to Egypt to explore the fascinating relics of the country’s remarkable history, and guided tours of Egypt are one of the best ways to get the most out of your stay in the Land of the Pharaohs.

At Egypt Tours Plus, all our package trips are private and flexible, which means that all Egypt tours can be altered and tailored to fit your exact needs. Alternatively, we offer custom tours which you can create yourself, simply by contacting us and telling us exactly what your interests are. Whether you are longing to stand before the Giza Pyramids in Cairo; stroll among the ancient tombs, temples and ruins in Luxor, or go sailing along the Nile in the lap of luxury, we can make it happen with a private Egypt tour that will leave you with lifelong memories – Guaranteed!

The 8 best places to visit in Egypt

From diving the Red Sea’s crystal blue waters and stargazing amid the vastness of the desert to floating down the Nile River and standing in awestruck wonder before the ruins of one of the world’s most ancient civilizations... When it comes to travel experiences, Egypt is a destination that leaves visitors spoiled for choice.

With so much to see, the struggle for many visitors is just where to begin – as always, we’re happy to help! Here is our pick of the 8 best places to visit in Egypt.

Egypt’s bustling capital city is layered with cultural, religious, architectural and even culinary history. Its wonders stretch far beyond the walls of its famous museums. You can take in centuries worth of sights just by walking down the city streets, and discover untapped wonders just by saying hello to a stranger. Then there are the Pyramids of Giza , truly a wonder of the world.

At the epicenter of history in the core of the city is Islamic Cairo, the city's most atmospheric quarter. Just grab your camera and venture down its vibrant alleyways. Take in the views from the Citadel and the old city gates – known as Bab Zuweila , Bab al-Futuh and Bab an Nasr – and admire the intricate details of the area’s stunning mosques. The ancient Mosque of Muhammad Ali , Ibn Tulun Mosque and Al-Hakim Mosque are particularly incredible. Islamic Cairo is also home to monument-lined Muizz Street and Khan El-Khalili bazaar – great spots to grab some souvenirs (if your haggling skills are up to the task).

A more under-the-radar-spot is Coptic Cairo, home to the Coptic Museum , the Hanging Church , the towers of the vanished Babylon fortress – the focal point of Egypt’s tiny Christian minority since the first century CE.

Local tip: By night, Cairo transforms thanks to its buzzing nightlife scene – sip a drink in historic downtown bars or take in live performances at hip clubs and art spaces.

A Dugong with yellow fish ascending to the surface at Marsa Alam in Egypt

2. Marsa Alam

Life is definitely better when you’re scuba diving through colorful corals and swimming with dolphins, dugongs and sea turtles in Marsa Alam ’s beautiful blue waters. A serene escape on the western shore of the Red Sea, Marsa Alam is one of the top spots in Egypt for underwater escapes . Popular dive spots include the Elphinstone reef and Abu Dabbab, one of the world's top beaches for snorkeling .

For land-based adventures, head to Wadi el Gemal National Park, where you can lay back by the water at Hankorab Beach or safari, hike or bike through rugged, mountainous terrain. Keep an eye out for camels at Sharm El Luli Beach or take in the beautiful scenery at the resort town of Qulaan.

To learn about Marsa Alam’s local Bedouin community, visit the Ababda House Cultural Museum or have dinner and an aromatic cup of Jebena coffee with the locals.

Detour: If you're looking for interesting souvenirs, head to Ghosoun and Hamata and meet local tribeswomen making unique hand-woven crafts and jewelry (each tribe has its own unique patterns and styles).

Felucca on the river Nile in Egypt. Luxor, Africa.

The site of the magnificent ancient city of Thebes, Luxor is said to preserve a third of the world’s ancient monuments between the pillars of its majestic temples. Dubbed the world’s greatest open-air museum, the capital of Upper Egypt recently celebrated the grand reopening of the 2.7km (1.7 mile) Avenue of the Sphinxes, an ancient thoroughfare connecting Karnak Temple , home of the famed Temple of Amun-Ra , and the impressively preserved Luxor Temple .

A sunrise hot air balloon ride will give you a captivating bird's-eye view of this city of ancient wonders. Once you're back on the ground, head to Hatshepsut Temple and Medinet Habu – two massive ancient architectural wonders that feature prominently on travelers' Instagram feeds – and cross the river to the Valley of the Kings , the royal burial site of Tutankhamun, Seti I and Ramses II.

Palm trees and patches of greenery cling to the dusty riverbanks of Aswan , one of Egypt’s most tranquil locations, celebrated for the unmatched hospitality of its Nubian community. Sail your way to any of the 20 river islands accessible by felucca, the traditional wooden sailboats that ply the river Nile.

To learn more about Nubian culture, visit the island of Gharb Soheil or stroll around the colorful streets of Aswan's Nubian Village. Sample homestyle veggie-based or chicken tagines in local cafes, or purchase aromatic spices from the vibrantly colorful Aswan spice market.

Aswan is famed for its stunning sunsets, which you can watch from any of the islands or while sailing the Nile on a felucca. Another top spot for watching the sunset is the restaurant at the iconic Sofitel Legend Old Catarac t where English author Agatha Christie penned her famous mystery, Death on the Nile .

Local tip: If you’re willing to wake up at 3am for the journey south across the desert, a day trip to Abu Simbel is a history buff’s dream; the whole temple complex was moved when the valley was flooded by the Aswan High Dam in the 1960s. If you’d rather let the sun wake up before you, explore Aswan’s Temple of Isis , also moved from its original location on Philae Island.

White chalk rock formations in the White Desert, Egypt

5. Black and White Deserts

The appeal of Egypt’s Black and White Deserts is quite literally black and white. These monochrome landscapes are like something out of a sci-fi movie, but the surreal scenery is a product of natural geology – the White Desert’s uniquely shaped limestone rock formations give the illusion of a snowscape, while the Black Desert features small black volcanic stones scattered over bright orange-colored sand.

A visit to either of these desert areas is perfect for a stargazing camping trip – it's the ultimate escape for anyone who’s had their fill of temples and big city traffic. The White Desert and Black Desert lie just south of the Bahariya Oasis , in Egypt’s Western Desert , which is accessible by bus from Cairo.

Local tip: While you’re out there, make sure you visit Crystal Mountain, a natural rock arch surrounded by glittering walls of quartz crystals, and Djara Cave, one of the country's most impressive, stalactite-filled caves. You’ll need to crouch down to enter the cave, but once inside, the ceiling looks like it’s coated in giant icicles.

6. Egypt's Mediterranean Coast

Egypt’s northern shoreline – affectionately known as El Sahel, meaning "The Coast" – is the ultimate summer escape on the shores of the Mediterranean. This sun-kissed coastal strip comes alive from May to September every year, drawing hordes of beach bums by day, and a veritable who’s who of Egypt’s party people by night.

The strip is lined with luxurious hotels and resorts, upscale residential compounds and world-class restaurants such as The Smokery Beach at Stella di Mare  and  Kiki's Beach at Hacienda White. The shores of Sahel are where you’ll find most of Cairo’s millennial and Gen Z crowd on Egypt’s hottest summer days.

Woman looking at scenic view of Siwa oasis at sunset

7. Siwa oasis

Far removed from the mayhem of Egypt's big cities, this little gem of an oasis is home to Siwan Bedouin people who follow a largely traditional way of life, and the town has thus far been only lightly touched by tourism. The locals are Amazigh tribespeople, who have managed to preserve much of their linguistic and cultural heritage thanks to the isolated location of their oasis home.

Siwa is often described as "the Sunset Oasis", and its sunsets are indeed unparalleled in Egypt. Whether you find a vantage point atop Dakrour Mountain or the ruined Shali Fortress , or take in the scenery and serenity of Taghaghien Island or Fatnas Island, you’re promised an unforgettable sunset. You can also expect a lot of mosquitos, so don’t forget your repellent.

Siwa is a prime destination for tourists looking to escape the winter chill and it's a leaping off point for the Great Sand Sea (the world’s third-largest dune field), swimmable hot and cold springs and crystal clear salt lakes where you can float effortlessly, supported by the saline waters.

Siwa is also famed for producing some of the country’s best dates, and you may be able to sample straight from the tree – just ask locals first. Every November, Siwa holds the Siwi Palm Date Festival.

Local tip: Try the local Abu Mardem chicken or lamb – a spiced dish that’s marinated for eight hours before being put into an iron pot and buried under the sand to cook.

Nubian men smoking a water-pipe in Aswan, Southern Egypt

8. El Gouna

It’s always sunny in this fully-integrated little town along the pristine shoreline of the Red Sea, just north of Hurghada. El Gouna has become the base for a multinational community of digital nomads, young families, and expats convinced that life is better by the water.

El Gouna has great aquatic activities, and lots of options for hiking and safaris in the surrounding desert landscapes, appealing to younger travelers. It also has bougie boutiques, cultural events and top-tier culinary experiences thanks to its many upscale restaurants, appealing to an older set.

With its world-class services, restaurants and living spaces, it's a great place to visit but also a fine place to set up your seaside office. There are plenty of coworking spaces and solid wifi connections, and lots of ways to keep busy outside of work hours – why work from home when you can work from El Gouna?

Day-by-day itinerary

Board your overnight flight to Cairo today.

Welcome to Egypt, where tales etched in stone await your discovery—and where your own Egyptian story will unfold.

Transfer from Cairo to your hotel in Giza and get settled in. This evening, enjoy dinner at your leisure in the hotel.

Set off on a guided tour of Cairo, where its strategic location in the Nile Valley drew the area’s first settlements 2,000 years ago. You’ll explore labyrinthine alleys and ornate mosques as you learn more about the region’s history from your Egyptologist—who is also your Tour Director.

  • Visit the Cairo Citadel. Built in the 12th century by the mighty Saladin and originally used as a fortress, it remained the seat of the Egyptian government until the 19th century.
  • Stop at the Muhammad Ali Mosque, built in the Ottoman style and known as the Alabaster Mosque for its extensive marble paneling. Its twin minarets make it one of the most striking structures in Cairo’s cityscape.

Gather with your fellow travelers for a welcome dinner with beer or wine at a local restaurant this evening.

Please note: Travelers are required to remove their shoes when entering the Alabaster Mosque, and to dress modestly. Women should cover their heads and shoulders, and men should wear long pants.

Meet up with your Tour Director and set off on a guided tour of Giza, Egypt’s third-largest city and home to some of the world’s most enduring ancient monuments.

  • Stand in the shadow of the Pyramids of Giza, the only Wonder of the Ancient World to have survived into the modern era. Standing as tall as 480 feet when it was built, the Great Pyramid of Giza continues to amaze with its size and the precision with which it was constructed.
  • Visit the enigmatic, 4,500-year-old Great Sphinx, the largest monolithic statue in the world. (It was carved from a single limestone bedrock!)
  • Enter the Grand Egyptian Museum, said to be the world’s largest museum, and explore its vast collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts alongside your Tour Director.
  • Enjoy an included lunch at a local restaurant.

Please note: If the Grand Egyptian Museum is not yet open to the public, travelers will visit the Egyptian Antiquities Museum instead.

Dine like an Egyptian by adding an optional home-hosted dinner in Cairo, during which you’ll sample Egypt’s complex flavors, like dukkah and fenugreek.

Cairo Home-Hosted Dinner

From $129 per person

Please note: Some cruise departures will follow days 5-9 in reverse.

Fly to Luxor, where you’ll board your cruise ship this afternoon. Enjoy an included lunch before seeing the painstakingly excavated Temple of Karnak and Luxor.

It’s said that 30 pharaohs presided over the building of the temple—a sprawling and vast ancient site. You’ll feel a palpable connection to the ancient world as you walk in the footsteps of priests and worshippers who came here for thousands of years.

  • Venture through the Karnak temple complex with your guide to see the Precinct of Amun-Re, whose mudbrick walls stretch over 1.5 miles around. Gaze over extensive hieroglyphic inscriptions marking moments in history, and end at the Temple of Khonsu—a smaller, more intimate temple dedicated to the god of time and the moon.
  • Take an early evening walking tour through Luxor Temple, located on the banks of the Nile River. As you approach, an avenue of human-headed sphinxes creates a dramatic and awe-inspiring entrance. The temple unfolds with a series of striking architectural elements that include massive columns, colossal statues, and hieroglyphs.
  • Continue your exploration of the complex at the Abu Haggag Mosque. Although the structure itself “only” dates to the 13th century, its site has been used as a place of worship for more than 3,500 years—and is still in use today.

This evening, sit down for an included dinner aboard the ship, served with beer or wine.

Spend the morning relaxing and catching up on sleep, or greet the day with an early start for an optional, but certainly once-in-a-lifetime, hot-air balloon ride over the Valley of the Kings and the Nile.

Later, tour the Nile’s West Bank with your Tour Director.

  • Explore the Valley of the Kings, a series of tombs nestled between rugged limestone outcroppings and mountains in the Theban Hills. The barren, rocky terrain contrasts with the lush greenery of the Nile’s eastern bank.
  • Enter King Tut’s tomb, famous for containing the treasures a pharaoh would need in the afterlife, such as clothing, food, chariots, games, and ceremonial items. Although these precious artifacts have since been relocated, you’ll observe the tomb resting amidst richly adorned walls.

This afternoon, enjoy an included lunch before sailing toward Edfu. Sit down for an included dinner this evening.

Nile River Hot Air Balloon Ride

From $169 per person

Spend a free morning while docked in Edfu or add an exploration of one of the best-preserved temples in Egypt—the Temple of Horus. This classic example of Ptolemaic architecture, with massive stone walls and towering pylons, is also one of the few temples in Egypt where inscriptions on its walls describe how it was built and used in ancient times.

Later, continue uncovering the wonders of Egypt after an included lunch aboard your ship. You’ll visit the Temple of Kom Ombo. Dedicated to the deities Sobek and Horus, it was constructed as two symmetrical temples aligned in parallel. Although they were initially built during the Ptolemaic period, they were expanded after the Roman conquest of Egypt, resulting in a blend of both local and Greco-Roman architectural styles.

Your day ends when you dock in the busy market city of Aswan, where you’ll sit down for an included dinner, served with beer or wine, aboard your vessel.

Edfu & the Temple of Horus

Enjoy a free morning aboard your ship or add an optional trek to Abu Simbel. You’ll visit the temples of Ramses II and his wife, Nefertari, originally carved into the mountainside and painstakingly relocated to save them from being submerged by the damming of the Nile.

Please note: Depending on flight schedules, the Abu Simbel excursion may be offered on day 9 instead of day 8.

Later, enjoy an included lunch before climbing aboard a felucca, a traditional Egyptian sailboat, to ride past Elephantine. Sited across from the hubbub of central Aswan, the island is home to two serene Nubian villages and once played an integral role in the ivory trade.

  • Cruise past partially excavated ruins scattered across the island, including the remains of the Temple of Khnum’s granite step pyramid. You may also spot a nilometer carved directly into the river’s rocky shores and marked with Arabic, Roman, and Egyptian numerals. In ancient times, nilometers were used to indicate the Nile’s water levels to predict the harvest and calculate taxes for the coming year.
  • Take in panoramic views of the dusty pink granite stones of the Mausoleum of Aga Khan. The historic site is the final resting place of Aga Khan III, one of Islam’s most important imams, and a testament to enduring love. Khan’s widow left a red rose on his tomb every day until her passing, a tradition still carried on today in the tomb that she commissioned.

Sit down for an included dinner, served with beer or wine, aboard the ship this evening.

Disembark your cruise in Aswan and set off on a sightseeing tour of the city led by your Tour Director. Known as the gateway to Nubia, Aswan is surrounded by a unique natural setting where the Nile, dotted with lush islands, meets an arid desert landscape.

  • Board a boat to visit the temples at Philae, an island in the Nile River. Watch in awe as enormous columns and imposing facades rise from the water, emblazoned with hieroglyphics.
  • Walk through the colorful local market where you’ll find perfumes, spices, traditional talismans, and souvenirs.

Spend a free afternoon in Aswan perusing one of the local markets. Or, add an immersive visit to a Nubian village and experience the hospitality of this distinct group that’s indigenous to southern Egypt.

Sit down for an included dinner this evening, served with beer or wine.

Transfer to the airport and fly back to Cairo today.

After sitting down for an included dinner, served with beer or wine, enjoy a free evening in Cairo. Ask your Tour Director for a recommendation or find a cozy cafe on your own. Be sure to order mint tea and kunafa, a spun pastry soaked in sweet syrup and sprinkled with pistachios.

Spend today in the oldest part of Cairo, exploring labyrinthian alleys, entering ancient houses of worship, and learning more about Egypt’s prismatic history.

  • Enter the Hanging Church. Officially known as Saint Virgin Mary's Coptic Orthodox Church, this third-century sanctuary is adorned with expertly turned wood carvings, colorful frescoes, and ornate marble columns. Its moniker stems from its position atop the gatehouse of Babylon Fortress, giving the impression that it’s suspended in the air.
  • Step inside the Turkish-style Ben Ezra Synagogue, a place of pilgrimage for North African Jews. It’s believed to have been built on the site where, according to biblical accounts, the baby Moses was found in the Nile River.

Then, transfer to the Gayer-Anderson Museum, a former home that now showcases Egyptian art, furniture, and curios.

Celebrate your trip with your fellow travelers during tonight’s farewell dinner, served with beer or wine, and raise a glass to an unforgettable trip and new friendships.

Transfer to the airport for your flight home or extend your trip to Jordan, where you can keep satisfying your wanderlust at two of our travelers’ favorite bucket list destinations: Petra and the Dead Sea.

Fly to Amman, Jordan, this morning and transfer to Petra. Then, sit down for an included dinner before settling in for a good night’s sleep. In just a few hours, you’ll be walking the wonders of Petra’s ancient legacy.

Head to the city of Petra, which was carved into the soft, red rocks of Mount Hor in the third century BC by members of an Arab tribe known as the Nabataeans. Explore the sandstone city alongside your new Tour Director.

  • Learn about Petra’s unique architecture—one of the reasons it was named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
  • Walk through the UNESCO World Heritage Site to the iconic Al-Khazneh, or Treasury, which served as a tomb and features one of the most famous facades in the world—immortalized in photographs, films, and, now, your very own camera roll.
  • Take in the intricately carved pillars and columns of the Palace Tomb, whose facade towers five stories above the ground.
  • Stroll through the winding, high-walled gorge known as the Siq and learn how tectonic forces formed the giant crack in the rock.

Please note: In order to enter Petra, travelers should be able to walk two miles round-trip in hot weather over uneven terrain. Other modes of transportation may be available for you to book upon your arrival at an additional cost.

So much of Jordanian hospitality revolves around sharing a meal with visitors and guests. Experience it yourself by adding a Levantine cooking class and dinner to your itinerary and round out your day with the authentic flavors of the eastern Mediterranean. You can also continue your evening with free time to explore Petra on your own.

Today, delve deeper into the history and culture of Jordan on a pair of guided sightseeing tours before continuing to Amman, the capital city.

  • Tour Madaba, a market town known for its collection of Byzantine-era mosaics.
  • Visit St. George’s Church and view the Madaba Map. Discovered by builders in the 1880s, this sixth-century Byzantine treasure is the oldest surviving mosaic map of Palestine and is said to have originally comprised more than two million pieces.

Spend your last day in Jordan getting to know the city of Amman and relaxing in the therapeutic waters of the Dead Sea.

  • Stroll through bustling local markets as you make your way to the ruins of the Citadel—a Bronze Age complex sitting on the city’s highest hill and the second-century Roman theater, the city’s most famous archaeological attraction.
  • Travel to the Dead Sea for a float in its famously salty water, located at the lowest land-based point on Earth, then share a farewell lunch with your fellow travelers.

Later, return to Amman to board your late-night flight home.

Just wanted to that Samia and Malek for the great job they both did. They both made the adventure special.

The tour was fantastic; even though it was fast-paced, I had the opportunity to see a lot. I felt secure throughout the entire tour. The group members were amazing, and the Tour Director was extremely knowledgeable and ensured that all were engaged and satisfied.

Once in a lifetime, you should experience something like this trip. I had learned about Egypt and Jordan in school and done reports on both places. I felt knowledgeable. However, being there and seeing these wonders first-hand was life changing. Our guide was so knowledgeable and insightful. Literal...

Physical Activity Level

This is a very high physical activity-level tour. You can expect vigorous activity throughout the course of the tour.

Tour Pacing

This is a very fast-paced tour. The pace of a tour itinerary considers how often you’ll switch hotels, the amount of planned daily activities, and how you’ll get from place to place. You can expect:

  • One 1-night stay
  • Most days and evenings full of included activities (more if you add excursions)
  • Most transportation by motor coach
  • Some transportation by boat and commercial flight
  • Daily bus time varies and can be lengthy

Walking, Terrain & Physical Requirements

  • Travelers should be prepared to walk 3-5 miles per day over varying terrain- this includes city streets, cobblestones, packed sand terrain, uneven stairs, and hills.
  • Travelers should be prepared for a 4 mile round trip walk to visit Petra, if taking the Jordan extension.
  • Travelers should be healthy enough to participate in all included walks without assistance.
  • Please Note: Adding optional excursions may increase the total amount of walking on your tour.

Climate Considerations

  • We recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered, as well as a light jacket or rainwear. While many places in Egypt have a warm, sunny climate, the desert can be very cold at night and temperatures will dip with changes in elevation throughout your tour. Therefore, we also recommend packing a few long sleeve shirts and warmer layers to wear at night.
  • A sturdy pair of walking shoes or sneakers is recommended for sightseeing.
  • Travelers on the tour extension may also wish to bring a swimsuit and pair of water shoes or strapped sandals for the included visit to the Dead Sea.

If you use an assisted listening device, such as a hearing aid or cochlear implant, please visit our Help Center for more information or contact our customer experience team. Please note that at this time not all our destinations offer headsets due to supplier limitations.
  • Take proper care with sun exposure, as the sun can be especially strong in some of the regions on this tour.
  • Drink bottled water only. Refrain from drinking tap water, including when brushing your teeth.
  • Avoid eating fresh fruits and vegetables unless they are cooked or washed in clean water and peeled.

  • Certain over-the-counter and prescription medications may be banned in one or all of the countries on this tour. Importing these drugs can carry severe consequences, including imprisonment. Please consult your healthcare provider prior to departure to ensure that any drugs you may want to bring with you are legal in all countries you will visit.

  • Breakfast each morning is also included at the hotel and is typically buffet style with hot and cold options.
  • Meal times vary greatly in Egypt and locals often skip lunch. While on tour, breakfast will be served around 8am and lunch is often served around 3pm. Therefore, we recommended bringing energy bars, crackers, or other packable snacks with you during the day.
  • Egyptian cuisine uses the bountiful harvests of the Nile Valley—corn, eggplant, zucchini, onions, tomatoes, cabbage, chickpeas, and citrus fruits are popular in many dishes. Don’t miss out on Egyptian interpretations of typical Mediterranean staples like baba ghanoush, falafel, and stuffed grape leaves. Tea is the national drink and is offered at breakfast, after lunch, and in most social situations.
  • On the tour extension, Jordanian cuisine resembles that of the rest of the Middle East. Olives, hummus, sesame seeds, and herbs are typical in many meals. Falafel is the main street food and many meals are served with rice. Hummus and salad are also popular and available at many restaurants. You'll find plenty of opportunities to sip mint tea or Turkish coffee.
  • At the conclusion of your tour, it is customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in US dollars or local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.
  • We recommend tipping the equivalent of $10USD to $12USD per person per day for your Tour Director and the equivalent of $3USD per person per day for your driver.
  • If applicable, we also recommend tipping the equivalent of $2USD per local guide.
  • In Egypt, tipping is an important part of the local culture and you will be expected to tip for services including, but not limited to, taking photos in some areas or seeing additional exhibits. Travelers should carry small bills (in USD) for this purpose.
  • Tips can only be paid in cash.
  • If you are traveling to multiple countries with different currencies and the same Tour Director, ask them what currency they prefer for their tip.
  • The cost of porterage is included in your tour price, and it is not necessary to tip baggage handlers.
  • You will use the Egyptian pound in Egypt (and the Jordanian dinar on the tour extension).
  • You may find it useful to have a supply of U.S. currency in small denominations when bargaining for everything from taxi rides to souvenirs.
  • Better rates of exchange are usually available abroad, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive.
  • We strongly advise that you take debit/bank cards and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed.
  • You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
  • Inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • Plan ahead and bring cash to tip your tour director, local guides, and bus drivers.
  • To ensure you feel prepared before traveling on tour, we strongly recommend you download the EF Go Ahead Tours mobile app. The app is free and provides important deadlines, entry requirements, your detailed itinerary, packing tips and more. You can also connect with fellow travelers through the chat feature in the app.
  • Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
  • There is no Wi-Fi on any of the motor coaches.
  • Please contact your mobile service provider for information on roaming charges.
  • Your Tour Director, who is also an Egyptologist, will be with you throughout your journey in Egypt.
  • There will also be additional staff working alongside your Tour Director to confirm logistics, as well as assist with transfers and on-tour flights. Having these staffers, who are solely focused on ensuring all on-tour logistics go smoothly, allows your Tour Director to dedicate even more one-on-one time to teaching your group about Egyptian history and culture.
  • As dictated by Egyptian Tourism Police, all foreign groups must be accompanied by an armed guard and/or convoy.
  • You will have a different Tour Director in Jordan on the tour extension.
  • The role of the Tour Director is not only to provide information and context on the destinations you visit, but also to confirm services, coordinate inclusions, prepare each days’ activities and support travelers while on tour. As such, they must focus on the success of the group, and cannot provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.

  • Egypt is one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and six hours ahead of Eastern Time (ET).
  • Jordan, on the tour extension, is two hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and seven hours ahead of Eastern Time (ET).
  • When it's noon in New York, it's 6pm in Egypt (and 7pm in Jordan).

That’s because our three core Responsible Travel commitments—protecting the environment, supporting local communities, and promoting animal welfare—are at the heart of every tour we offer
  • Travel, when done responsibly, can make an enormous socio-economic impact to communities. To maximize your impact, eat at locally owned restaurants and shop at local businesses. Ask your Tour Director to point out restaurants they recommend
  • Prepare for your trip: be aware of the monetary norms such as tipping and negotiating in a market, learn about the destination’s forms of etiquette, and take some time to learn a few words in the local language
  • When interacting with locals, make sure to ask people for permission before you take their picture, and approach cultural differences with empathy and an open mind
  • EF Go Ahead Tours encourages our travelers to limit their waste while on the road, especially single use plastics. You can avoid single use plastics by packing your own toiletries, using electronic documents, and bringing a reusable water bottle and shopping bag. If you need to use plastics or paper, please recycle
  • Animal Welfare: Take the philosophies of World Animal Protection to heart during included tour activities and your free time. Do not touch, do not feed, and maintain a respectful distance from wild animals. Wild animals encountered on tour should be able to exhibit natural forms of behavior. If you feel we are not meeting these commitments, please share your feedback with us.
  • Animal Welfare: Avoid buying any exploitative wildlife products such as tortoise shell or shark fin soup.
  • On this tour you will spend 4 nights on the Nile River cruise.

  • While Wifi is available on the ship, it is often available only in common areas and sometimes at an additional cost.
  • Most ships do not have elevators.
  • Ships often dock directly next to each other, which may require travelers to walk through other ships' lobbies and cross the small gap to their own ship.
  • It is recommended travelers get any cash or necessities before boarding the ship.

20 Top-Rated Attractions & Places to Visit in Egypt

Written by Jess Lee Updated Oct 16, 2023

Home of the ancient Pharaohs, Egypt is a destination full of dazzling temples and tombs that wow all who visit. It's not all historic treasures and tourist attractions, though. With vast tracts of desert for 4WD adventures, the Red Sea's world-class coral reefs and wrecks for divers, and cruising on the famed Nile River, there are plenty of things to do in Egypt for all types of travelers.

Beach lovers head to the Sinai or the Red Sea Coast to soak up the sun, while archaeology fans will have a field day in Luxor.

Cairo is the megalopolis that can't be beaten for city slickers, while Siwa oasis and the southern town of Aswan offer a slice of the slow pace of the countryside.

With so much to see and do, Egypt offers visitors a chance to create itineraries that combine culture, adventure, and relaxation all on one trip.

Plan your sightseeing with our list of the top attractions and places to visit in Egypt.

1. Pyramids of Giza

2. luxor's temples & tombs, 3. cruising the nile, 5. abu simbel, 6. diving the red sea, 7. explore historic cairo, 8. south sinai's beach life, 10. egyptian museum, 11. white desert, 12. alexandria, 13. abydos temple, 14. siwa oasis, 15. st. catherine's monastery, 16. red sea beaches, 17. coptic cairo, 18. wadi al-hitan, 19. temple of hathor, 20. monastery of st. anthony.

Pyramids of Giza

The last surviving wonder of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Pyramids of Giza are one of the world's most recognizable landmarks.

Having awed travelers down through the ages, these tombs of the Pharaohs Khufu (Cheops), Khafre (Chephren), and Menkaure (Mycerinus), guarded by the enigmatic Sphinx, are usually top of most visitor's lists of tourist attractions to see in Egypt and often the first sight they head to after landing.

Today, sitting on the desert edge of Cairo's sprawl, these megalithic memorials to dead pharaohs are still as wondrous a sight as they ever were and an undeniable highlight of any Egypt trip.

To beat the crowds , get here around 7:30am and enter through the main Pyramid of Khufu site entrance (rather than the Sphinx entrance). This means you can have finished exploring the interior tunnels and burial chambers of the Pyramid of Khufu by the time the tour buses start pulling in at 8:15am.

Most visitors limit their site visit to the three pyramids and the Sphinx, but there is plenty more to see on the Giza Plateau. If you can, reserve time to explore the funerary complexes of the eastern cemetery (on the east side of the Pyramid of Khufu). The tombs of 6th dynasty high officials Qar and Idu and the tomb of Meresankh III (who was one of Pharaoh Khafre's wives) are all open to the public.

Karnak Temple

Famed for the Valley of the Kings , Karnak Temple , and the Memorial Temple of Hatshepsut, the Nile-side town of Luxor in Upper Egypt has a glut of tourist attractions.

This is ancient Thebes, the power base of the New Kingdom pharaohs, and home to more sights than most can see on one visit.

Luxor's east bank is home to the modern city, with its vibrant souq; the two temples of Karnak and Luxor; and the museum. The west bank's lush farmland and barren cliffs are where the vast majority of Luxor's tourist attractions sit, with so many tomb and temple sights that it has been called the biggest open-air museum in the world.

Spend a few days here exploring the colorful wall art of the tombs and gazing in awe at the colossal columns in the temples, and you'll see why Luxor continues to fascinate historians and archaeologists.

The Valley of the Kings is one of Egypt's most visited sites but, if you are willing to get up extra early, you can beat the crowds . All of Luxor's archaeological sites open at 6am, but hardly any visitors (and no large tour operators) take advantage of this.

Kick off your sightseeing with a 6am start at the Valley of the Kings, and you'll get to experience the interiors of Luxor's famed New Kingdom tombs with hardly anyone else (except the handful of other wily early risers) there.

Cruising on the Nile at Luxor

Egypt is defined by the Nile. For many visitors, a multi-day cruise upon this famed waterway that saw the rise of the Pharaonic era is a highlight of their Egypt trip.

Cruising the Nile is also the most relaxing way to see the temples that stud the banks of the river on the route between Luxor and Aswan, plus sunrise and sunset over the date-palm-studded river banks, backed by sand dunes, is one of Egypt's most tranquil vistas.

The two famous sights on a Nile Cruise are the Temple of Kom Ombo and Edfu's Temple of Horus , where all the big cruise boats stop.

If you'd prefer a less crowded and slower experience, though, and don't mind "roughing it" a bit, you can also cruise the Nile by felucca (Egypt's traditional lateen-sailed wooden boats), which also allows you to create your own itinerary.

The vast amount of cruise boat itineraries depart from either Luxor or Aswan, but feluccas can only be chartered for multi-day trips from Aswan.

Feluccas on the Nile at Aswan

Egypt's most tranquil town is Aswan, set upon the winding curves of the Nile. Backed by orange-hued dunes, this is the perfect place to stop and unwind for a few days and soak up the chilled-out atmosphere.

Take the river ferry across to Elephantine Island and stroll the colorful streets of the Nubian villages. Then ride a camel to the desert monastery of St. Simeon on Aswan's east bank. Afterwards, relax in one of the riverboat restaurants while watching the lateen-sailed feluccas drift past.

Make sure to jump aboard a felucca at sunset to sail around Aswan's islands. This is by far, Aswan's most popular activity and the most relaxing way to take in the local sights.

There are plenty of historic sites here and numerous temples nearby, including Philae Temple on its island, but one of Aswan's most popular things to do is simply kicking back and watching the river life go by.

Abu Simbel

Even in a country festooned with temples, Abu Simbel is something special. This is Ramses II's great temple, adorned with colossal statuary standing guard outside, and with an interior sumptuously decorated with wall paintings.

Justly famous for its megalithic proportions, Abu Simbel is also known for the incredible engineering feat carried out by UNESCO in the 1960s, which saw the entire temple moved from its original setting to save it from disappearing under the rising water of the Aswan Dam.

Today, exploring Abu Simbel is just as much about admiring the triumph of this international effort to save the temple complex as it is about gaping in wonder at Ramses II's awe-inspiring building works, itself.

Most people arrive in Abu Simbel on organized day trips from Aswan, which all have an early morning start to get to the temple complex at 8am or 9am.

After 11am, nearly everyone has cleared out and headed back to Aswan. To wander through Ramses II's colossal monument without the crowds, overnight in Abu Simbel village itself and visit the temples after midday.

Divers enjoying the underwater beauty of the Red Sea

Below the Red Sea's surface is another world as fascinating as the temples and tombs on land.

The coral reefs of the Red Sea are renowned among scuba divers for both the soft corals on display and the vast amount of sea life, ranging from colorful reef fish and nudibranchs to sharks, dolphins, turtles, rays, and even dugongs.

For divers, the most famous town to base yourself in is Sharm el-Sheikh on the Sinai Peninsula, closest to the reefs of Ras Mohammed National Park, as well as the reefs of the Straits of Tiran.

To dive the sites of the Straits of Gubal head to Hurghada or El Gouna on the Red Sea coast, while advanced divers should check out the resort of Marsa Alam, the nearest base for diving Egypt's "deep south" dive sites.

Thistlegorm wreck dive

As well as fish life and coral, the Red Sea is a major wreck-diving destination. The most famous wreck is the Thistlegorm, a British WWII cargo ship that was on its way to resupply Allied troops when it was bombed by the Germans in 1941.

Today the site is regarded by divers as one of the top five wreck dives in the world due to the vast cargo of cars, motorbikes, and WWII memorabilia that can be seen both scattered on the sea bed around the wreck and inside the ship itself.

Dive boat trips to the wreck are organized from both Sharm el-Sheikh and Hurghada.

The Red Sea offers year-round diving but for the calmest sea conditions and best underwater visibility, July and August are the best months . This is high summer in Egypt though with its accompanying sweltering on-land temperatures. If your Egypt trip doesn't solely revolve around diving, it's still best to avoid these months.

Islamic Cairo

The atmospheric, narrow lanes of the capital's Historic Cairo district are crammed full of mosques, madrassas (Islamic schools of learning), and monuments dating from the Fatimid through to the Mameluke eras.

This is where you'll find the labyrinth shopping souq of Khan el-Khalili, where coppersmiths and artisans still have their tiny workshops, and stalls are laden with ceramics, textiles, spice, and perfume.

Surrounding the market is a muddle of roads, home to some of the most beautiful preserved architecture of the old Islamic empires.

There is a wealth of history here to explore. Visit Al-Azhar Mosque and the dazzling Sultan Hassan Mosque , and make sure to climb up to the roof of the ancient medieval gate of Bab Zuweila for the best minaret-speckled panoramas across the district.

Mornings are the best time to visit this district as the narrow lanes are at their quietest. If you're planning to visit the area's mosques though, avoid visiting on Fridays (the Muslim holy day) . If you want to enter mosques as a tourist, dress conservatively (covering arms and legs) and bring along a scarf to throw over your head if you're female.

Keen shoppers should head to Khan el-Khalili in the evening: the shops here are all open until late and the souq is at its most vibrant after dark.

South Sinai

Egypt's South Sinai region, on the Sinai Peninsula, offers a beach for every type of traveler.

Sharm el-Sheikh is a European-style resort town packed full of luxury hotels, international restaurants, and bags of entertainment options. A favorite with Europeans on winter-sun vacations, many of the resorts here cater to families on one- or two-week sun-and-sand breaks.

Dahab is a low-key beach town with a budget-traveler heart, which is just as much about desert excursions and adventures as the sea. It's particularly known for its cheap dive-package deals and for its lagoon beach area where windsurfing and kitesurfing are the top activity.

Up the coast, between the port town of Nuweiba and the border town of Taba are the bamboo hut retreats that offer complete get-away-from-it-all respites from life and back-to-basics beach life.

Pyramid and ruins at Saqqara

Everyone's heard of Giza's Pyramids, but they're not the only pyramids Egypt has up its sleeve. Day-tripping distance from Cairo , Saqqara is a vast necropolis of tombs and pyramids that was utilized during every era of Pharaonic rule.

It's best known for its Old Kingdom Step Pyramid, which shows how the architects of Ancient Egypt advanced their engineering knowledge to finally create a true pyramid shape.

There's much more to see beyond the Step Pyramid, though, with some of the surrounding tombs, such as the Mastaba of Ti, showcasing some of the finest tomb paintings you'll see in the country.

Nearby, the pyramid site of Dahshur is home to the Red Pyramid and Bent Pyramid, which should be included on any Saqqara visit.

Egyptian Museum

A treasure trove of the Pharaonic world, Cairo's Egyptian Museum is one of the world's great museum collections . The faded pink mansion in downtown Cairo is home to a dazzling amount of exhibits.

The museum's exhibits cover the breadth of the Pharaonic era with highlights including its artifacts from pre-dynastic Egypt, the Old Kingdom galleries displaying the fine statuary from Egypt's period of pyramid builders, and the displays of glittering funerary goods unearthed from the country's most famous tomb finds.

Make sure to reserve enough time at the museum to fully view the galleries devoted to the grave goods of Yuya and Thuya and the royal tombs of Tanis (both upstairs).

Until Giza's much-delayed Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) opens, the Egyptian Museum is also where you come to see a selection of the riches from Tutankhamen's Valley of the Kings tomb. When the GEM finally does open, these will be moved there (and the entire Tutankhamen collection will be displayed in full for the first time).

Everything else though in the Egyptian Museum's collection will be staying in place.

White Desert

Egypt's kookiest natural wonder is White Desert National Park, out in the Western Desert, just south of Bahariya Oasis. Here, surreally shaped chalk pinnacles and huge boulders loom over the desert plateau, creating a scene that looks like icebergs have found themselves stranded amid a landscape of sand.

This highly scenic environment looks like something out of a science fiction movie and is a favorite destination for 4WD desert trips and overnight camping , which are both easiest organized in Bahariya Oasis.

For desert fans and adventurers, this is the ultimate weird playground, while anybody who's had their fill of temples and tombs will enjoy this spectacular natural scenery.

Alexandria

Alexandria has a history that not many others can match.

Founded by Alexander the Great, home of Cleopatra, and razzmatazz renegade city of the Mediterranean for much of its life, this seafront city has an appealing days-gone-by atmosphere that can't be beaten.

Although today, there are few historic remnants of its illustrious past left to see, Alexandria's long seafront Corniche road leading to its fort (sitting on the site where its famous ancient lighthouse once sat) remains a favorite summer destination to capture cooling sea breezes for Egyptians and foreign visitors alike.

Underwater archaeological projects here have imbued Alexandria's museums with interesting exhibits. The modern Bibliotheca Alexandrina is a contemporary interpretation of Alexandria's famed ancient library, and the handful of historic sights in town include an atmospheric catacombs site.

Abydos Temple

The Temple of Osiris in Abydos is one of Ancient Egypt's most fascinating artistic treasures.

The temple, begun by Seti I, sits amid a vast necropolis site where archaeological excavations are ongoing. There a various other temple remnants to see here but for most visitors, the Temple of Osiris is the main reason to visit.

Its hypostyle halls, graced by papyrus-headed columns, contain some of the finest relief-work in Egypt, with various scenes portraying the pharaoh and the gods of Ancient Egypt.

As the temple lies north of Luxor, it isn't on the main Nile cruise ship route, so it receives much fewer visitors than the temple sites in Luxor itself and the Nile-side temples to the south. This means you are often lucky enough to wander through the temple's halls with only a few other visitors on site.

Siwa Oasis

Sitting in isolation, in the western corner of the Western Desert, Siwa is the tranquil tonic to the hustle of Egypt's cities. This gorgeous little oasis, surrounded by date palm plantations and numerous hot-water springs, is one of the Western Desert's most picturesque spots.

Siwa town is centered around the ruins of a vast mud-brick citadel, known as the Fortress of Shali, which dominates the view, while various temple remnants, including the Temple of the Oracle where Alexander the Great is said to have come to receive advice, are scattered throughout the wider oasis area.

This is a top spot to wind down and go slow for a few days, as well as being an excellent base from which to plan adventures into the surrounding desert.

St. Catherine's Monastery

One of the oldest monasteries in the world, St. Catherine's stands at the foot of Mount Sinai, amid the desert mountains of the Sinai Peninsula, where Moses is said to have received the Ten Commandments.

This desert monastery is home to an incredible collection of religious iconography, art, and manuscripts (some of which can be seen in the on-site museum), as well as the burning bush.

For most visitors here, a trip to St. Catherine's also involves a hike up Mount Sinai to see sunrise or sunset. Take the camel path for the easy route, or climb the famous Steps of Repentance if you want better views.

Umbrellas on the beach in Hurghada

Egypt's Red Sea coastline offers swaths of sand for travelers who want a time-out from temple viewing.

During winter, the resorts scattered along the shore surrounding Hurghada jump into life as European families arrive on package tourism breaks.

The big bonus of choosing a resort on the Red Sea coast over one on the Sinai Peninsula is that you are within day-tripping distance to Luxor, so this is the best place to visit for beach life if you still want to easily see some of Egypt's most famous monuments.

Hurghada and El Gouna are the two main resort towns, while the smaller, and still being-developed, town of Marsa Alam is much farther south.

Fortress of Babylon walls

The Cairo district known as Coptic Cairo is one of the most important Christian sites in the country.

Originally the Fortress of Babylon, dating back to the Achaemenid Empire's conquest of Egypt in 525 BCE, this district is home to Cairo's oldest surviving church, synagogue, and mosque, as well as the excellent Coptic Museum, which holds the world's largest collection of Coptic Christian art and antiquities.

A section of the Fortress of Babylon's walls, which were repaired and expanded under Roman rule, are also still standing and are the entrance into the district.

Make sure to visit the Hanging Church, which holds a fine collection of icons and was built half over the Roman-era water wheel (hence the church's name). Then thread your way down the narrow alley to the Church of St. Sergius and Bacchus which, according to local tradition, was built atop the site where the Holy Family with the infant Jesus lived in refuge after fleeing King Herod.

Nearby, the Ben Ezra Synagogue is famous for being the site where the Geniza documents cache were discovered.

A short walk away is the Mosque of Amr Ibn Al As, built by the Arab Muslim army commander (and later, first governor of Egypt) after conquering Egypt.

Wadi Al-Hitan's fossils

Wadi Al-Hitan is in the Fayoum area, a lush and fertile depression fed by ancient canals and surrounded by desert.

The Fayoum itself, with Lake Quran, the pottery village of Tunis, and Pharaonic ruins scattered across the hinterland, is an interesting place to visit, but the main tourist attraction here, in the nearby desert, is the UNESCO World Heritage site of Wadi Al-Hitan.

Amid the orange dunes and jagged rocks of this desert valley, a vast fossil cache of the oldest prehistoric whales (the basilosaurus and dorodontus) were discovered, hugely aiding human understanding of the evolution of whales.

Some of the finds have been kept in situ, with walking tracks radiating out from the visitor's center to skeleton sites sitting amid the sand.

In the visitor center itself, a museum dedicated to the site does an excellent job of explaining Wadi Al-Hitan's importance, and displays many of the site's other finds, including a skeleton of a basilosaurus whale that measures 18 meters long.

Temple of Hathor

The Temple of Hathor at Dendara was built in the late Pharaonic era and extended during the Roman period, though Dendara itself was an important cult center from early on in the period of Ancient Egypt.

A trip here is well worth a day trip from Luxor, as the temple's youth (in comparison to other Pharaonic temples) means that it is one of the most complete surviving temples in Egypt.

The reliefs and decoration here are in an excellently preserved state. In particular, while in the hypostyle hall, which was built by the Roman Emperor Tiberius, note the columns topped by heads of the Egyptian god Hathor, and the wall reliefs of the emperor paying tribute to the Egyptian gods.

Dendara is just outside the city of Qena, 80 kilometers north from Luxor.

Monastery of St. Anthony

Secreted within the jagged northern mountains of the Red Sea coast, the Monastery of St. Anthony has been a working monastery since the 4th century, and today is still home to around 120 monks.

The Church of St. Anthony, within the fortress-like compound, has an interior of secco wall paintings that are considered one of the most important collections of Egyptian Coptic art in the world and date from around the 11th and 12th centuries. The church is also home to the tomb of St. Anthony (the father of monasticism) and is a major pilgrimage destination for Egyptian Coptic Christians.

Monks run tours of the monastery that include visiting the church and some of the monastery's gardens, as well as allowing you to head up and walk on top of the monastery's walls.

St. Anthony's Monastery is very isolated. If you don't have your own transport, the easiest way to get here is to hire a driver from Cairo or Hurghada.

WHAT OUR CLIENTS SAY

Best Egypt tours Ever, we enjoyed our tour to Egypt with Egypt Tours Gate.

Jim D

We would sincerely like to thank Egypt Tours Gate for providing a safe, comprehensive, and memorable tourist experience of Egypt. My girlfriend & I were provided excellent service from flight touchdown to departure day. We met our first representative as we stepped off the plane, who quickly navigated us though customs, baggage collection, visa and money exchange, and finally to our hotel via private shuttle. Although the trip itinerary was outlined in advance of the trip, our guides were very receptive to making adjustments to our liking, where possible. We enjoyed seamless and headache-free travel and entrance to all the sites and adventures Egypt had to offer, with no surprises. The tour guides were very knowledgeable of all we visited, provided recommendations for how to spend time between sites, and were available virtually 24/7 for any questions/concerns we had. The accompaniment of personal guides removed a significant amount of upfront planning and the threat of costly and time-consuming logistical mistakes. This allowed us to focus on and enjoy Egypt as it was meant to be experienced. Overall, it was a great value for money. One of our favorite highlights was unwinding at the Siwa Oasis for our last leg of the trip. We decided to tag this on last minute as we were planning out the itinerary and are sure glad we did!. Siwa was a great spot for rest and relaxation as well as more fun adventures including a 4x4 keep excursion into the desert! We will never forget our cruise down the Nile either! Truly a once in a lifetime experience. We highly recommend Egypt Tours Gate for personalized tour services. They will tailor your trip to your exact needs! We are so thankful for our excursion there... Truly a childhood dream come true.

Planning the perfect Egypt itinerary is never an easy task, because this is one of the largest countries in North Africa, and there’s a lot to try and fit in.

Any first time Egypt itinerary needs to include all the best things that the country is known for, and that means you’ll be delving into ancient history, and exploring tombs and pyramids.

You’ll also be cruising along the Nile River and then saving some time to relax on the beaches of Hurghada, at Egypt’s Red Sea resorts.

There’s a lot to fit in, and we promise to use all of the knowledge and experience we have gained from our 7 weeks of travel in Egypt to help you plan the perfect trip.

To inspire your North African adventure, here’s our guide to crafting the perfect Egypt Itinerary.

Putting Together the Ultimate Egypt Itinerary

Table of Contents

The Best Time to Visit

David Stock Jr of Divergent Travelers Adventure Travel blog exploring Egypt

Egypt enjoys hot weather all year round, with a Mediterranean climate on the coast and a more desert-like climate in the interior.

The most popular time to visit is in winter and spring, between November and April when the weather is much cooler but still beautiful. This is peak season though so expect larger crowds and higher prices.

From May through to August the weather is blisteringly hot, but you’ll beat the crowds, while fall can be a lovely time to visit.

Getting Around in Egypt

How to get around in Egypt

When planning your Egypt Itinerary you’ll need to consider the best way to travel around. It’s a big country so to save on time you’ll want to fly between the north and the south or take overnight trains.

You can take a flight or sleeper train from Cairo to Luxor for instance, or Cairo to Hurghada. The best way to get from Luxor to Aswan is the scenic route, along the Nile River.

You can visit Egypt independently or you can have your tour organized in advance.

If you want to save time and hassle then having everything arranged or being part of a group tour makes traveling to Egypt so much easier, especially if it’s your first time in the country.

We recommend having at least 2 weeks for a well-rounded Egypt itinerary, giving you enough time to see the highlights and to enjoy a few more relaxed days during the trip.

However, we will also layout itineraries for both 7 day and 10 day options in this guide too.

Costs & Budget

David Stock Jr of Divergent Travelers Adventure Travel Blog with the Key of Life.

By most standards, Egypt is an inexpensive country to travel around. You can comfortably stay in private accommodation and hotels and eat out each night and you can still keep your costs below 50 USD per person per day.

Budget travelers can easily spend much less than that too, by taking local transport and eating at the really local places.

Safety in Egypt

How safe is Egypt

Egypt can be a chaotic and confusing place to visit for first-time travelers, and in terms of travel, it can be both a challenge and an experience.

Part of the challenge can be the safety aspects, and while the country is safe to visit you do need to be careful of petty theft and unfortunately, harassment too.

Look after your belongings and watch your pockets in crowded markets and public transport. Also keep on top of the news and political events, as this can be an unstable part of the world to be in.

7 Days in Egypt Itinerary

Camels at The Pyramids of Giza

Egypt is a big country, and you don’t want to underestimate the distances between the cities when you’re planning how to get around and planning how long you’ve got to explore.

This said, 7 days is the absolute least amount of time you can give yourself to see the very high-level sites of Egypt. You will miss stuff, but we can definitely work with a one week Egypt itinerary.

7 Day Egypt Itinerary Overview:

7 Days in Egypt Itinerary Map

  • Day 1: Arrive in Cairo
  • Day 2: Cairo – Tour the Pyramids of Giza & Egyptian Museum
  • Day 3: Fly to Luxor – Tour temples and join Nile River Cruise
  • Day 4: Nile Cruise – Luxor West Bank & sailing
  • Day 5: Nile Cruise – Edfu, Kom Ombo & sailing
  • Day 6: Nile Cruise – Aswan & Abu Simbel option
  • Day 7: Aswan – Philae Temple, High Dam & Fly to Cairo
  • Day 8: Depart Cairo

I will not lie, this is going to be a rushed and shallow overview of what Egypt has to offer. However, you will get a good taste and see many of the places that Egypt is famous for.

As you can see, I have suggested the addition of a Nile River Cruise because with only one week in Egypt, you will want to maximize your time. You can do this by having the bulk of your sightseeing as part of your tranportation.

We have traveled Egypt both independently, on a tour and by cruise. If you choose to forego the cruise, know that you will not be able to see Edfu and Kom Ombo.

You will also not have the time to visit Abu Simbel because you will need to give up a day to transportation logistics. In my opinion, it is simply not worth it and highly recommend the cruise option.

Cairo: 1 to 2 Days

David Stock Jr of Divergent Travelers Adventure Travel Blog at The Pyramids of Giza

Cairo is Egypt’s capital, the largest city in the country and for many travelers, it’s usually the starting point for any Egypt itinerary.

Yes, Cairo is big. It’s chaotic and it’s sprawling, but it’s also exciting and enthralling in equal measure.

You won’t need more than a few days, but with great museums, bustling bazaars and the iconic Pyramids of Giza to see, there’s a lot to pack in.

How much time you spend in Cairo will depend entirely on how many days you have for your Egypt itinerary. On a 7 day itinerary, you will have time to only tour the Great Pyramids of Giza and the Egyptian Museum.

Both of which are must not miss sites in Egypt. However, with longer itineraries, you will have more time to explore Cairo and it is worth it.

Popular Things to See in Cairo

THE PYRAMIDS OF GIZA

Luxor: 2 to 4 Days

Luxor at night

Luxor is found in the south of Egypt, along the beautiful, green banks of the Nile River.

This is one of the best stops on any Egypt Itinerary if you’re into your Ancient Egyptian history.

Luxor was known to antiquity as Thebes and it was an important capital for the Egyptian Pharaohs, many of whom are buried in the valleys around the city.

Popular Things to See in Luxor

VALLEY OF THE KINGS

Lina Stock of Divergent Travelers Adventure Travel blog in the Valley of the Kings in Egypt

The Valley of the Kings is the single most important archeological site in Egypt. This is where many Pharaohs had their tombs and monuments built, including the infamous boy-king, Tutankhamun.

See the highlights of Luxor on this full-day tour of the East and West Bank of the Nile . Explore the city’s magnificent temples, tombs, and monuments in the company of an Egyptologist guide.

Includes visits to the Valley of the Kings, Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, and Karnak Temple.

KARNAK TEMPLE

Lina and David Stock (Americas Adventure Couple) exploring in Luxor Egypt

This huge temple complex is located in the city itself and is one of the main reasons why Luxor is often called the largest open-air museum in the world.

Book this great combo admission ticket and private transport service to see the Karnak Light and Sound Show at Luxor hassle-free . Watch the history of Egypt’s pharaohs unfold while you walk around the ancient temple complex. Getting there is easy with an included round-trip transfer.

HOT AIR BALLOON FLIGHTS

Hot air balloon ride from Luxor

One of the best ways to see Luxor is from above, and hot air balloon rides are an increasingly popular activity in the city.

Take in aerial views of Luxor and its iconic landmarks on this private 45-minute hot air balloon flight . Your guide will be dedicated to just you and your private party.

You’ll be able to ask questions and listen to commentary tailored to your interests. All transportation to and from the launch site is included for a door-to-door experience.

Nile River Cruise: 5 to 7 Days

Nile Rive Cruise

No Egypt Itinerary is ever complete without a cruise along the famous Nile River.

At well over 4000 miles in length, this is the longest river in the world, and it’s famously green and verdant in comparison to the surrounding desert sands of Egypt.

The best part of the river to cruise is the section heading south from Luxor to Aswan. This is virtually the only way to visit the temples of Edfu and Kom Ombo.

You can join multi-day excursions where you sleep on the boat and call in at temples and tombs during the day. The length of the Nile River Cruise can vary but you’ll want at least 4 days to really make the most of it.

To visit these historic places comfortably, and easily, savvy travelers consider this inclusive, multi-day cruise down the Nile River . Enjoy several stops along the way, and hop off the ship to see ancient tombs, temples, and monuments.

Aswan: 2 to 3 Days

Sailboat in Aswan at Sunset

Aswan is another wonderful stop on any Egyptian Itinerary because like its neighbor Luxor, along the river to the north, this is a place that’s overflowing with history.

In Aswan, you can marvel at temples and enjoy the serenity of the Nile River, as you delve into ancient history. The city is also the gateway to the stunning Abu Simbel, located near the border of Sudan.

Aswan is a special place in that is unlike any other place you will visit in Egypt. It has a completely different vibe and culture, so it’s worth spending a few more days here uncovering that.

Popular Things to See in Aswan

NUBIAN MUSEUM

Nubian mask in Aswan Egypt

Learn all about ancient Nubian culture and history at the excellent Nubian Museum.

Explore the Nubia Museum with an Egyptologist on a private 1.5-hour tour , and discover Aswan’s most stunning artifacts.

ELEPHANTINE ISLAND

Elephantine Island in Aswan Egypt

Found in the middle of the Nile River, Elephantine Island was the original site of Aswan when it was a trading post and frontier town on the edge of the Egyptian empire.

Visit ruins and temples and enjoy well preserved Archeological sites.

Abu Simbel: 1 Day

Abu Simbel Egypt

Carry on south towards the Sudanese border from Aswan, and you’ll reach the incredible temple complex at Abu Simbel.

You only need one day to visit, but you’ll be impressed by the engineering and artistry of the ancient Egyptians who constructed this epic temple.

Dedicated to the Gods of old, the temple was commissioned by Pharaoh Ramesses II thousands of years ago.

The temples were literally carved from the cliff face where you still find it today, having stood the test of time in the deserts of North Africa.

See the ancient marvel of Abu Simbel on a private day trip from Aswan . Journey southward by private, air-conditioned vehicle as your personal guide shares tales of the 3,400-year-old complex, a masterwork of ancient Egyptian engineering beside Lake Nasser.

Ideal 10 Days in Egypt Itinerary

While the above 7 day Egypt itinerary is a possibility for someone with limited time, I would recommend that 10 days be the absolute minimum if you can swing it.

Adding an additional 3 days to your itinerary will give you time to see more in and around Cairo. This includes both the City of Saladin and Coptic Cairo, both of which have very rich history.

You’ll also be able to see the incredible sites of Saqqara, Dashur and Memphis, where pyramids pre-date the Pyramids of Giza. All of which are essential in understanding the evolution of ancient Egypt.

10 Day Egypt Itinerary Overview:

10 Days in Egypt Itinerary Map

  • Day 8: Cairo – Take a city tour to Coptic Cairo & the City of Saladin
  • Day 9: Cairo – Take a day trip to Saqqara, Dashur & Memphis
  • Day 10: Depart Cairo

This 10 day Egypt itinerary includes all of the stops mentioned above, with Cairo in greater detail as I already mentioned.

The biggest addition is the day spent exploring the Saqqara complex, Dashur, ancient city of Memphis and Imhotep Museum. The highlights of this can be found below. Trust me when I say you don’t want to miss it.

Saqqara, Dashur & Memphis : 1 Day

Bent Pyramid at Saqqara - Egypt itinerary

Located 30km from central Cairo, the Saqqara Complex and surrounding sites are some of the most spectacular, yet under-visited attractions in Egypt.

The Step Pyramid of Djoser is a spectacular, and recently restored, example of the first pyramids in Egypt. Surrounding this pyramid is a massive complex full of tombs with well-preserved wall art too.

We have shown photos to people of these tombs and everyone immediately assumes they are from the Valley of the Kings. Wrong! These are impressive things to be seen in Saqqara.

Nearby and sitting in the middle of the desert landscape are the Dashur and Red Pyramids. The two structures that link the Bent Pyramid to the most famous architecture of pyramids that we know today.

Pair this with the opportunity to visit the second largest Sphinx in Egypt, see a massive statue that was unearthed of Ramses II, a chance to gaze upon the oldest mummy ever found and this makes for a spectacular day of uncovering ancient Egypt.

Popular Stops on this Day Trip

SAQQARA TOMBS & STEP PYRAMID OF DJOSER

Saqqara Tombs in Egpyt

As I’ve already mentioned, there are some spectacular tombs to explore around the Saqqara Complex. Unlike the Valley of the Kings, where all the tombs are meters underground, the tombs of Saqqara on ground level and easy to access.

Many of them are free to enter and inside you’ll find intricate hieroglyphs depicting daily life in ancient Egypt. You’ll also find detailed cartouche etchings that tell the story of the tomb’s occupant.

BENT PYRAMID OF DASHUR

Dashur Bent Pyramid in Egypt

One of my favorite things about the Bent Pyramid of Dashur is that you can climb inside to the burial chambers for free. This is not for the faint of heart of claustraphobic.

The shaft is long, narrow and decends deep into the pyramid. Once inside, you climb up and down stairs, including another smaller shaft before entering the final chamber.

On the exterior, you can compare the design flaws that led to it’s shape as the Egyptians transitioned from step pyramids to the iconic design we know today.

RED PYRAMID

Red Pyramid near Cairo, Egypt

While this pyramid doesn’t look much different from the Giza Pyramids, it is actually very important. This was the very first construction of the classic pyramid shape that we know today.

The Red Pyramid was built after the failed completion of the Bent Pyramid. The Egyptians, using the knowledge that they had gained about mathematics and geometry, made the angles less steep.

It is possible to go inside of this pyramid now and it is also free of charge. If tomb raiding is your thing, I’d recommend you come here versus paying the high prices to enter the Giza Pyramids. Truthfully, they all look the same inside!

IMHOTEP MUSEUM

Imhotep Museum at Saqqara Complex in Egypt

This museum sees few people but that is unwarranted. It houses a wonderful collection of ancient artifacts that have been exumed from Saqqara.

There are plenty of pristine examples of pottery, jewelry, hieroglyphics and art to see here. You can also observe a beautifully preserved mummy, which happens to be the oldest known one in all of Egypt.

MEMPHIS OPEN AIR MUSEUM

Rameses II Statue at Memphis in Egypt

In Ancient Egypt, it was Memphis that housed the capital of civilization. Today, not much exists of the city but, in my opinion, it is still worth visiting.

Located in an open-air museum (pictured above) you can closely view a massive statue of Ramses II that was uncovered on the site.

Outside, you’ll find the second-largest Sphinx in the country along with several exhumed pillars and statues from the city.

Ideal 2 Weeks in Egypt Itinerary

A 2 week Egypt itinerary is the absolute sweet spot. This will get you into all the good spots and also give you time to relax on the Red Sea.

It also sends you all the way to the North to explore the city of Alexandria on the Mediterranean Sea. Here, you’ll find a strong overlap of Roman and Egyptian history.

2 Weeks in Egypt Itinerary Overview:

2 weeks in Egypt Itinerary Map

  • Day 3: Cairo – Take a day trip to Saqqara, Dashur & Memphis
  • Day 3: Fly to Luxor – Tour Luxor & Karnak Temples
  • Day 4: Luxor – Day trip to Dendera & Abydos, join Nile Cruise
  • Day 5: Nile Cruise – Luxor West Bank & sailing
  • Day 6: Nile Cruise – Edfu, Kom Ombo & sailing
  • Day 7: Nile Cruise – Aswan & Abu Simbel option
  • Day 8: Aswan – Philae Temple, High Dam & Fly to Hurghada
  • Day 9: Hurghada – Relax on the Red Sea
  • Day 10: Hurghada – Relax on the Red Sea
  • Day 11: Morning on the beach then fly to Cairo
  • Day 12: Cairo – Take a city tour to Coptic Cairo & the City of Saladin
  • Day 13: Cairo – Take a day trip to Alexandria
  • Day 14: Depart Cairo

While I have sent you to Hurghada, mainly due to logistics, it is also realistic that you could exchange this for either Sharm el Sheikh or Dahab instead.

Personally, I prefer Dahab, as it is more laid back and the diving up there is spectacular. The resorts are also very affordable and simple compared to both Sharm el Sheikh and Hurghada.

Logistically though, reaching Dahab is going to require more effort than the other two options. For me, Hurghada becomes the second choice over Sharm el Sheikh, simply due to how commercial it is structured.

That said, you cannot go wrong with any of the towns on the Red Sea. You will find some stunning coral, loads of fish, shipwrecks and plenty of companies willing to take you out diving or snorkeling for the day.

Alexandria: 1 Day

Alexandria Egypt

Alexandria is Egypt’s second city, and one of the largest cities in the Mediterranean Sea.

It’s a bustling metropolis that dates back thousands of years to the time of Alexander the Great, who founded the city as he conquered the known world.

Today, it’s the perfect addition to any Egypt Itinerary, being just a 3-hour train ride from Cairo and offering layer upon layer of history to peel back, from the ancient Egyptians and Romans through to the Islamic era.

Popular Things to See in Alexandria

BIBLIOTHECA ALEXANDRINA

Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Egypt

In the Ancient World, Alexandria was a famed place of learning, known for its exceptional library.

The library was lost though, burnt down by the Romans, but in recent years the Egyptians opened up the Bibliotheca Alexandrina as a tribute to the city’s past.

It’s a library and a cultural center and you can visit four museums on-site to learn more.

Join this luxurious tour at the legendary city founded by Alexander the Great. You can see there many thousands of books.

The library has shelf space for eight million books, with the main reading room covering 20,000 square meters on eleven cascading levels.

You will also visit abbo el Abbas mosque which was redesigned and was influenced by Egypt’s Old Cairo buildings and architecture.

CATACOMBS OF KOM EL-SHOQAFA

Some of our new discoveries are already published, and some are not.
