Fall prevention: Simple tips to prevent falls

Falls put you at risk of serious injury. Prevent falls with these simple fall prevention measures, from reviewing your medications to hazard-proofing your home.

Fall prevention is an important topic to consider as you get older. Physical changes and health conditions — and sometimes the medications used to treat those conditions — make falls more likely as you age. In fact, falls are a leading cause of injury among older adults. Still, fear of falling doesn't need to rule your life. Instead, consider six simple fall prevention strategies.

1. Make an appointment with your health care provider

Start by making an appointment with your health care provider. To assess your risk and discuss fall prevention strategies, your health care provider may want to talk about the following:

  • Your medications. Make a list of your prescription and nonprescription medications and supplements, or bring them with you to the appointment. Your health care provider can review your medications for side effects and interactions that may increase your risk of falling. To help with fall prevention, your health care provider may consider weaning you off medications that make you tired or affect your thinking, such as sedatives, antihistamines and some types of antidepressants.
  • Any previous falls. Write down the details, including when, where and how you fell. Be prepared to discuss instances when you almost fell but were caught by someone or managed to grab hold of something just in time. Details such as these may help your health care provider identify specific fall prevention strategies.
  • Your health conditions. Certain eye and ear disorders may increase your risk of falls. Be prepared to discuss your health conditions and how comfortable you are when you walk — for example, do you feel any dizziness, joint pain, shortness of breath, or numbness in your feet and legs when you walk? Your health care provider may evaluate your muscle strength, balance and walking style (gait) as well.

2. Keep moving

Physical activity can go a long way toward fall prevention. With your health care provider's OK, consider activities such as walking, water workouts or tai chi — a gentle exercise that involves slow and graceful dance-like movements. These activities reduce the risk of falls by improving strength, balance, coordination and flexibility.

If you avoid physical activity because you're afraid it will make a fall more likely, tell your health care provider. Your provider may recommend carefully monitored exercise programs or refer you to a physical therapist. The physical therapist can create a custom exercise program aimed at improving your balance, flexibility and muscle strength.

3. Wear sensible shoes

Consider changing your footwear as part of your fall prevention plan. High heels, floppy slippers and shoes with slick soles can make you slip, stumble and fall. So can walking in your stocking feet. Instead, wear properly fitting, sturdy, flat shoes with nonskid soles. Sensible shoes may also reduce joint pain.

4. Remove home hazards

Take a look around your home for potential fall hazards. To make your home safer:

  • Remove boxes, newspapers, electrical cords and phone cords from walkways.
  • Move coffee tables, magazine racks and plant stands from high-traffic areas.
  • Secure loose rugs with double-faced tape, tacks or a slip-resistant backing — or remove loose rugs from your home.
  • Repair loose, wooden floorboards and carpeting right away.
  • Store clothing, dishes, food and other necessities within easy reach.
  • Immediately clean spilled liquids, grease or food.
  • Use nonslip mats in your bathtub or shower. Use a bath seat, which allows you to sit while showering.

5. Light up your living space

Keep your home brightly lit to avoid tripping on objects that are hard to see. Also:

  • Place night lights in your bedroom, bathroom and hallways.
  • Place a lamp within reach of your bed in case you need to get up in the middle of the night.
  • Make clear paths to light switches that aren't near room entrances. Consider trading traditional switches for glow-in-the-dark or illuminated switches.
  • Turn on the lights before going up or down stairs.
  • Store flashlights in easy-to-find places in case of power outages.

6. Use assistive devices

Your health care provider might recommend using a cane or walker to keep you steady. Other assistive devices can help, too. For example:

  • Handrails for both sides of stairways
  • Nonslip treads for bare-wood steps
  • A raised toilet seat or one with armrests
  • Grab bars for the shower or tub
  • A sturdy plastic seat for the shower or tub — plus a hand-held shower nozzle for bathing while sitting down

If necessary, ask your health care provider for a referral to an occupational therapist. An occupational therapist can help you brainstorm other fall prevention strategies. Some solutions are easily installed and relatively inexpensive. Others may require professional help or a larger investment. If you're concerned about the cost, remember that an investment in fall prevention is an investment in your independence.

Prevention of Slips, Trips and Falls

On this page, how do falls happen, how to prevent falls due to slips and trips, what can you do to avoid falling at work.

Statistics show that the majority (67%) of falls happen on the same level resulting from slips and trips. The remaining 30% are falls from a height. This document will summarize information on "falls on the same level" (slips and trips). Falls from an elevation, such as falls from ladders, roofs, down stairs or from jumping to a lower level, etc., is discussed in other documents since each type of fall must be assessed as part of a fall prevention program .

Slips happen where there is too little friction or traction between the footwear and the walking surface. Common causes of slips are:

  • wet or oily surfaces
  • occasional spills
  • weather hazards
  • loose, unanchored rugs or mats
  • flooring or other walking surfaces that do not have the same degree of traction in all areas

Trips happen when your foot collides (strikes, hits) an object causing you to lose balance and, eventually fall. Common causes of tripping are:

  • obstructed view
  • poor lighting
  • clutter in your way
  • wrinkled carpeting
  • uncovered cables
  • bottom drawers not being closed
  • uneven (steps, thresholds) walking surfaces

Both slips and trips result from unintended or unexpected change in the contact between the feet and the ground or walking surface. This fact shows that good housekeeping, quality of walking surfaces (flooring), selection of proper footwear, and appropriate pace of walking are critical for preventing fall incidents.

Housekeeping

Good housekeeping is the first and the most important (fundamental) level of preventing falls due to slips and trips. It includes:

  • cleaning all spills immediately
  • marking spills and wet areas
  • mopping or sweeping debris from floors
  • removing obstacles from walkways and always keeping walkways free of clutter
  • securing (tacking, taping, etc.) mats, rugs and carpets that do not lay flat
  • always closing file cabinet or storage drawers
  • covering cables that cross walkways
  • keeping working areas and walkways well lit
  • replacing used light bulbs and faulty switches

Without good housekeeping practices, any other preventive measures such as installation of sophisticated flooring, specialty footwear or training on techniques of walking and safe falling will never be fully effective.

For more information about effective housekeeping, visit the OSH Answers document on Workplace Housekeeping - Basic Guide .

Changing or modifying walking surfaces is the next level of preventing slip and trips. Recoating or replacing floors, installing mats, pressure-sensitive abrasive strips or abrasive-filled paint-on coating and metal or synthetic decking can further improve safety and reduce the risk of falling. However, it is critical to remember that high-tech flooring requires good housekeeping as much as any other flooring. In addition, resilient, non-slippery flooring prevents or reduces foot fatigue and contributes to slip-prevention measures.

In workplaces where floors may be oily or wet or where workers spend considerable time outdoors, prevention of fall incidents should focus on selecting proper footwear. Since there is no footwear with anti-slip properties for every condition, consultation with manufacturers is highly recommended.

Properly fitting footwear increases comfort and prevents fatigue which, in turn, improves safety for the employee. For more information on footwear visit the OSH Answers document on Safety Footwear .

You can reduce the risk of slipping on wet flooring by:

  • taking your time and paying attention to where you are going
  • adjusting your stride to a pace that is suitable for the walking surface and the tasks you are doing
  • walking with the feet pointed slightly outward
  • making wide turns at corners

You can reduce the risk of tripping by:

  • keeping walking areas clear from clutter or obstructions
  • keeping flooring in good condition
  • always using installed light sources that provide sufficient light for your tasks
  • using a flashlight if you enter a dark room where there is no light
  • making sure that things you are carrying or pushing do not prevent you from seeing any obstructions, spills, etc.

Luke Bryan clarifies cause of concert fall: 'I don't think it was a cellphone'

Luke Bryan is going viral for his onstage tumble.

The "Country Girl" singer appeared to trip on a fan's cellphone that made its way to the stage floor at the Coast City Country Festival in Vancouver on Saturday.

Bryan, 47, laughed off his fall after landing on his back, videos shared on social media show .

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Holding up the cellphone onstage, the country singer asked the crowd, "Did anybody get that?" Bryan then tossed the phone back to the presumed owner, telling him, "It's OK," before jokingly adding, "My lawyer will be calling."

The country singer then grabbed another fan's phone from the audience that taped his fall and presented the video on the screens.

"There I am, there we go, jumping, jumping, hyping the crowd … There it is," he said as he replayed the moment in real-time.

"Hey, I need some(thing) viral. This is viral," Bryan joked, before telling the fan to caption the video with a hashtag of his song "Love You, Miss You, Mean It."

Luke Bryan says he exaggerated role of cellphone in onstage fall

During a red-carpet interview with Entertainment Tonight Monday, Bryan cleared the air about the culprit behind his recent fall onstage.

"Everybody is reporting (about the) cellphone, but I was kind of hamming that up," Bryan told ET's Denny Directo. "I don't think it was a cellphone. I think it was just slick."

Bryan then joked that he needed to capitalize on the buzz of the incident.

"I need viral moments, you know? I need viral moments!" Bryan said. "My new single is 'Love You, Miss You, Mean It.' Now I've got to get the bumper sticker made — 'I busted my (butt), and this is my new single.' "

Luke Bryan talks 'paying it forward' with younger artists

Bryan, who is in the midst of his Mind of a Country Boy tour, told the Nashville Tennessean earlier this month that "gaining the eyeballs to make people take notice of your artistry" is much more difficult these days.

The struggle to kick off your career and maintain it is why he's enlisted other young country artists to open for him on tour.

From Sheryl Crow to Beyoncé: Here's what to know about the country music albums coming in 2024

"I'm nurturing where younger artists are at in the infancy of their careers and helping them navigate the anticipation of watching a single go up the charts," Bryan said, reminiscing of when he was an opener for Brooks & Dunn, Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw almost 20 years ago.

"Paying it forward is pretty special stuff," the "Crash My Party" singer said. "Diving in there and getting artists ready to hopefully mirror the type of success I've had as classy and savvy artists with integrity is important."

Dwayne Johnson talks Chris Janson video collab, says he once wanted to be a country star

Bryan added that he "wasn't a naturally gifted performer" and had to be open to flexibility.

"Because of that focus, I've been able to avoid un-inventing and reinventing (my art and brand). I still feel as inspired and relevant to everything happening at all levels of the music industry as I've ever been," he said.

Older Adult Falls Data

Falls are the leading cause of injury for adults ages 65 years and older. Over 14 million, or 1 in 4 older adults report falling every year. This chart shows the number of older adult fall-related deaths by month and year, including the most recent provisional data available. You can access the full interactive chart by clicking on the image or the button below.

  • Older Adult Falls Reported by State
  • Deaths from Older Adult Falls
  • Cost of Older Adult Falls

Falls among adults aged 65 and older are common, costly, and preventable. Falls are the leading cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries among older adults. 1

Learn more about the falls and fall death rates in your state, as well as the economic cost of falls.

In the United States, over 14 million, or one in four, adults ages 65 and older (older adults), report falling each year. 2 While not all falls result in an injury, about 37% of those who fall reported an injury that required medical treatment or restricted their activity for at least one day, resulting in an estimated nine million fall injuries. 3

While older adult falls are common across all states, there is variability. 2

Note for grayed-out states on the 2012 map: In the 2012 BRFSS survey, Michigan, Oregon, and Wisconsin used a different falls question from the rest of the states. Therefore, the 2012 falls estimates could not be calculated for these states.

Falls are the leading cause of injury-related death among adults ages 65 and older, and the fall death rate is increasing. 4 The age-adjusted fall death rate increased by 41% from 55.3 per 100,000 older adults in 2012 to 78.0 per 100,000 older adults in 2021. 5,6

The rising number of deaths from falls among older adults can be addressed by screening for fall risk and intervening to address risk factors such as use of medicines that may increase fall risk, or poor strength and balance.

*Age-adjusted death rates standardized to the 2000 U.S. population with age groups 65–74, 75–84, and ≥85 years using the direct method.

**Rates are marked as “unreliable” when the death count is less than 20.

Falls among adults ages 65 and older are very costly. Each year about $50 billion is spent on medical costs related to older adult falls—fatal injuries total $754 million, and the remainder is attributed to non-fatal fall injuries. 7

Non-fatal Falls

  • $29 billion is paid by Medicare
  • $12 billion is paid by private or out-of-pocket payers
  • $9 billion is paid by Medicaid

As the number of Americans ages 65 and older grows, we can expect the number of fall injuries and the cost to treat these injuries to soar.

How Are State Costs Calculated?

Direct medical costs include fees for hospital and nursing home care, doctors and other professional services, rehabilitation, community-based services, use of medical equipment, prescription drugs, and insurance processing. 8 Direct costs do not account for the long-term effects of these injuries, such as disability, dependence on others, lost time from work and household duties, and reduced quality of life. 8

Luke Bryan Jokes with Fan After Tripping on a Cellphone on Stage: 'My Lawyer Will Be Calling'

The country singer took a hard fall during his set at the Coast City Country Festival in Vancouver, Canada, on April 20

John Shearer/Getty

Luke Bryan is taking a recent fall in stride!

The "Crash My Party" singer, 47, was hyping up the crowd during his set at Coast City Country Festival in Vancouver, Canada, on Saturday, April 20, when he took a hard tumble onstage.

In footage of the moment shared by TMZ , Bryan sat up immediately with a grin on his face and looked unhurt. The fall appeared to be caused by a fan's cellphone that had somehow found its way onto the stage.

"Hold up! Did anybody get that?" the country music star asked the crowd while on his knees, still holding the cellphone that presumably caused the fall.

He tossed the phone to an unknown fan, who presumably apologized to him. "It's okay," he told the person before jokingly adding, "My lawyer will be calling."

"I gotta see it," Bryan said from on his knees, grabbing another fan's cellphone that was offered to him from the crowd.

"Oh, you're Snapchatting, you can't Snapchat this s---," he continued, taking the phone and presenting the clip to the crowd.

The "Play It Again" singer replayed the footage of his fall for the audience to see, even providing narration of the moment in which he resembled a cartoon character slipping on a banana peel.

"There I am, there we go, jumping, jumping, hyping the crowd... There it is," he screamed as he watched himself fall.

"Hey, I need some viral. This is viral, alright?" he joked with the crowd.

"Hashtag 'Love You, Miss You, Mean It,' " he added, referencing one of his hits before he gathered himself and introduced his song "Country Girl (Shake It for Me)."
