Where to watch D.C.’s Fourth of July fireworks

Celebrate Independence Day from these vantage points

For the first time in many years, the area around the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool and the World War II Memorial will be open to the public for official U.S. events this July 4. That includes the annual fireworks show, scheduled to begin shortly after 9 p.m. and last about 35 minutes.

But the launch pads for the display are relocating to West Potomac Park and the Virginia-facing side of the Lincoln Memorial in 2019, the Trump administration announced in June. Military demonstrations, flyovers, and music are also planned.

In this map, you can find the best places to watch these fireworks. They offer waterfront views, grassy patches, and different angles of the District.

Note that the Arlington Memorial Bridge , long a popular spot from which to watch Independence Day fireworks, will be closed to pedestrians this year due to security changes.

This post has been updated to reflect the run-time for the fireworks show.

Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool

Arrive early and brace for crowds if you want to be where the main action is. You can also grab a spot closer to the World War II Memorial or in Constitution Gardens , which will also be publicly accessible. Gates to these sites open at 3:30 p.m., according to the U.S. Interior Department.

Planning to watch the 4th of July fireworks in Washington, DC, this year? It doesn’t get much more patriotic than being in the nation’s capital to see red, white, and blue lights bursting in the sky over the monuments. It's always worthwhile to queue up with the crowds and watch pyrotechnic displays from the National Mall or from the Capitol’s West Lawn, but if you have access to a rooftop, you’ll get a panoramic view of the city’s distinctive skyline and the Washington, DC, fireworks launching from the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.

Read below to find hotels and restaurants in DC that are hosting fantastic 4th of July fireworks viewing parties, complete with craft cocktails and all-American snacks—from the usual hot dogs and sliders to even crab feasts.

A rooftop restaurant.

The rooftop bar at the Rosewood Washington, DC, will have a picturesque view of the fireworks.

If you’re looking to spread out a blanket and gaze up at the sky, try to snag a spot in Georgetown Waterfront Park. But for a higher-up vista (and bubbly drinks), Georgetown hotels are throwing 4th of July parties on their rooftops. Top of the Gate offers a 360-degree view of the Washington Monument and Potomac River from atop The Watergate Hotel , and there will be an open bar along with a Champagne toast and a buffet in honor of the holiday. The 4th of July party starts at 6 p.m. and runs until 10 p.m., with tickets ranging from $150 to $595 per person (special Fourth of July hotel room offers are available).

At CUT Above —the rooftop bar by celeb chef Wolfgang Puck at the Rosewood Washington, D.C. —you’ll be able to dine on a three-course meal in addition to enjoying a picturesque view of the fireworks. Your 4th of July dinner will include jumbo lump blue crab salad with grapefruit, avocado, basil, and pink peppercorn; a bone-in ribeye served with Argentinian chimichurri; and strawberry-watermelon popsicles for dessert. The evening starts at 6 p.m. and ends at 10 p.m. and costs $325 per ticket, which includes a half-bottle of Billecart-Salmon Brut Reserve to drink.

A rooftop bar with a view of The Washington Monument.

Hotel Washington’s VUE Rooftop is throwing a party on July 4th from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Hotel Washington’s VUE Rooftop is just half a mile from the White House, which means this is one of the most unique vantage points for sight-seeing in town. The hotel is throwing a “ Red, White and VUE ” party for the 4th from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. with an open bar and entertainment from a DJ and a cover band. The buffet is a riff on a cookout, with choices like smoked brisket, mac and cheese, and a slider bar. General admission tickets, which do not include the open bar and buffet, are $75; while all-inclusive VIP tickets are $200.

The sleek and ultra-modern Conrad Washington, D.C . is hosting an exclusive fireworks party just for hotel guests at Summit , its 11th-floor rooftop bar, with sweeping views of the downtown skyline and the US Capitol Building. Make a reservation at the hotel for the evening and call to reserve your spot on the rooftop, beginning at 7:30 p.m. The food menu includes pulled pork barbecue sandwiches, lobster rolls, a crab feast, and a play on a root beer float that features caramelized vanilla puff pastry and root beer mousse.

If you book a room at The Jefferson during the holiday, this historic downtown hotel is partnering with boat company Embark DC to allow guests to seamlessly hire a private boat tour and watch the fireworks from the Potomac River, starting at $900 for an unforgettable 4th of July.

L’Ardente , a glam Italian spot downtown, is throwing for the 4th of July a three-course, seafood-focused dinner party, serving dishes like cauliflower panna cotta with Alaskan king crab. The festivities then move upstairs to the restaurant’s glass-enclosed, air-conditioned rooftop conservatory on the 13th floor for fireworks viewing. There, partake in wine, bubbles, and an array of bite-size desserts (including mini cannoli that look like ice cream cones). You can buy a ticket for dinner and the rooftop viewing party for $225, or just the fireworks viewing party for $100, and the entire event runs from 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

The artsy Eaton Hotel on K Street often hosts live music at its rooftop bar dubbed Wild Days, and this holiday is no exception. You’ll be able to have a view of the 4th of July fireworks in Washington, DC, while listening to Wild Days ’s monthly vocal and instrumental improvisation show, Creator’s Jam. This will be a non-ticketed event, and admission to Wild Days will be available on a first come, first-serve basis. Also on K Street is Lucha Rosa , the new petal-pink-accented rooftop bar atop the Moxy Hotel that will be in full swing on the 4th of July. Order shrimp ceviche, chips and guacamole, tortas, and tacos while you’re enjoying the view.

The Wharf skyline with fireworks.

A 4th of July fireworks display, as seen from The Wharf, a new development in Washington, D.C.

This new development in DC is always a tourist magnet, and the mile-long waterfront neighborhood along the Potomac River will draw even bigger crowds for the 4th. To watch the fireworks, you can snag a spot along the water, or secure tickets for The Wharf’s own viewing party at the Dockmaster Building at the tip of District Pier. Each $60 ticket includes two drink tickets, and there will be access to a cash bar, light fare like mini hot-dogs and sliders, games, raffles, and a photo station.

Like its sister property in Baltimore, the Pendry Washington DC – The Wharf is perched on the water. This newly-opened hotel is taking advantage of the incredible riverfront views seen from its rooftop restaurant Moonraker , and throwing a DJ-ed Fourth of July party dubbed “Red, White & With A View.” Moonraker’s Japanese-inspired menu will merge with classic Americana fare for the evening, with dishes like wagyu cheeseburger sliders, Japanese potato salad, karaage chicken wings, and a pie bar for dessert. The party runs from 6 to 10 p.m. and costs $200 per person; the event is for adults age 21 and over.

Salamander Washington DC , which debuted in 2022 in the former home of the Mandarin Oriental ’s DC property, is right near The Wharf development. It’s the closest hotel in the city to the National Mall and the Tidal Basin, just a four-minute walk away. The Salamander is throwing a July Fourth backyard barbecue in its beautiful garden patio, with family activities, grilling demonstrations on the Big Egg Grill, and performances of the national anthem and American folk songs by the 21st Grey Coat Battalion Fife and Drum Corp. The party begins at 5 p.m. and costs $175 for those partaking in the open bar, $135 for those who opt for non-alcoholic beverages, and $65 for children ages four to 10. After the festivities end at 8 p.m., head to the Mall for fireworks—or view them from the pedestrian bridge right near the hotel and the Tidal Basin.

HiLawn D.C.

The faux grass-covered Hi-Lawn on the roof of Union Market

The view of the Capitol is crystal clear from the rooftop of new NoMa hotel The Morrow, so it makes sense that this would be the place for a 4th of July party with DJs, Stars n’ Stripes margaritas, and s’mores with red, white, and blue marshmallows. Party packages range from $35 to $1000 for seating for up to 10 around a firepit; call for bookings at The Upstairs. Le Clou, the hotel’s French brasserie by chef Nicholas Stefanelli, is also hosting a 4th of July barbecue buffet starting at $75 per person or $39 for children under 12, which includes general entry to the fireworks viewing party on the rooftop. Hotel packages with entry to the party are also available.

Union Market’s rooftop is a favorite picnic spot, thanks to its faux grass-covered outdoor oasis called Hi-Lawn . The massive rooftop is planning five days of free-to-attend festivities around the 4th of July weekend, culminating in cornhole, sack race, and tug-of-war competitions during the day on the actual holiday before you watch the fireworks display from the rooftop in the evening. The menu includes adult juice boxes, boozy ice pops, Tajin-and-lime watermelon salad, and hot dogs cooked on a rooftop grill, including a half smoke-style “DC Dog.”

4th of July Fireworks on the National Mall: Best Spots to Watch the DC Fireworks

N othing says Independence Day like watching the 4th of July fireworks light up the night sky above the iconic memorials and monuments of Washington, DC. It's a sight many families are excited to check off their summer fun list , and that means viewing spots tend to get pretty crowded. Luckily, we have some ideas to help you navigate safely and get great views of the DC fireworks this year.

While it might pay to grab tickets to a family-friendly river cruise for the evening, you don't need to spend a dime to see the Washington, DC fireworks 2023 in person. You just need to know where—and when—to go and what you might want to bring to make the most out of the evening.

Don't forget to check out our event calendar for a whole host of Independence Day celebrations throughout DC, Northern Virginia, and MD during the first week of July. Happy 4th of July!

What to Know About the Washington, DC Fireworks 2023

The DC fireworks will launch from both sides of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool at 9:09pm on July 4 and end around 9:30pm. As with any big DC event, expect crowds and security screenings. Common sense applies when it comes to what you can and can’t bring: glass containers, alcohol, recreational equipment such as badminton and volleyball gear, and grills aren't allowed. Be sure to check over the prohibited items list on the National Parks Service website , which will be updated for road closures and other important day-of information.

For getting through the checkpoints with ease, take a few minutes to clean and organize diaper bags or other totes you might be taking. And just like going through airport security, placing items in clear zip-top plastic bags makes the whole process go more smoothly.

Arrive early to snag a good spot, and don't forget to bring lawn chairs, blankets, snacks, sunscreen, and plenty of water—temperatures can climb to well above 90 degrees in DC in July.

There are also viewing spots at the World War II Memorial, the Reflecting Pool, and Constitution Gardens. Look up the public-access entry points ahead of time so you'll know where to go. The closest place to watch the display is on the National Mall, but space starts filling up quickly on July 4.

READ THIS | Metro's fare-free Fourth: Here's how to navigate DC's fireworks on the National Mall

WATCH the fireworks here;

Here are some other options with fewer people and without sacrificing the view:

FREE OPTIONS

U.S. Marine Corps Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial): This spot has an excellent view of the National Mall from across the Potomac. There is a lot of space around the memorial to sit down with a blanket on the grass hill. Also nearby is Arlington National Cemetery, which has good hill space for viewing the fireworks just be sure to be respectful while having fun. The advantages of this area are a direct view of the National Mall from across the river. But parking and sitting spaces may be difficult to find because it is a popular spot.

The Wharf: This is a great spot for anyone who wants to be waterfront for the display. The Wharf is easily accessible from the metro, and there are several restaurants in the area to grab dinner at before the show. Like anything else on the Fourth, restaurants will be bust, so try to make a reservation beforehand.

Washington National Cathedral: This Northwest DC spot is one of the highest areas in the city and has a great view of the National Mall. It may be challenging to find parking in the nearby neighborhoods, but there are two Redline metro stops within half a mile of the area.

Cardozo High School: Overlooking much of the District, Cardozo has a large panoramic view of the city. This spot is much farther from the fireworks than the others, but one can expect fewer crowds and great views.

Mount Vernon Trail: A more active option to go see the holiday fireworks is to rent bikes and ride on the Mount Vernon Trail. This trail follows the Potomac from Alexandria up to Arlington. There are several spots to pull off and see the fireworks from the trail. Just be careful about riding after dark. Find a link to the full trail map here to plan your trip.

Lady Bird Johnson Park: This park has lots of open space to lay down a blanket and see the fireworks from across the Potomac. It is a less crowded option than the Iwo Jima Memorial with just as good of a view of the Washington Monument. But free parking may be a challenge.

Everything to know about celebrating July Fourth on the National Mall

fireworks cruise dc

There’s nothing like the Fourth of July in Washington. Every year, hundreds of thousands of red-white-and-blue-clad patriots pour into the heart of the nation’s capital to celebrate America’s independence. From live music to a parade to rockets bursting in air, the area around the National Mall will be abuzz with activity on the Fourth. The scene is spectacular, if sometimes spectacularly overwhelming.

Here’s everything you need to know to make the most of the day.

How to get to the National Mall

Metro is the easiest way in, since the Smithsonian station puts you right at the heart of the Mall. Last year, Metro counted 253,000 trips on July Fourth — the highest number since 2019, when there were 315,000. The problem is that it’s not always the easiest way home: In 2022, passengers waited up to 75 minutes for a train at the Smithsonian station after the fireworks. If possible, walk to another stop, such as L’Enfant Plaza, Federal Triangle or Foggy Bottom-GWU, and board there.

Given the long list of road closures and parking suspensions around the Mall and memorials, visitors are strongly urged not to drive.

10 a.m.: National Archives July Fourth Celebration

It’s appropriate that the day’s festivities begin at the home of the Declaration of Independence. The ceremonies start with presentations by the Army’s Old Guard, the Continental Color Guard, and the Fife and Drum Corps, before the declaration is read from the steps of the Archives with the help of some costumed reenactors. (The audience is encouraged to boo King George III as the grievances against him are enumerated.) Afterward, the National Archives Museum is open for visitors to see the declaration and other documents and to participate in a scavenger hunt and other family-friendly activities. Seating opens at 9 a.m.; Archives open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. National Archives, 701 Constitution Ave. NW. archivesjuly4.org . Free.

10 a.m.: National Gallery of Art and Smithsonian museums open

Most of the main events on July Fourth take place outdoors, but Washington summers can swelter, and it’s best to head indoors for a cooling break every now and then. Thankfully, all the museums around the Mall are open on Independence Day, and what better way to celebrate freedom than seeing the Star-Spangled Banner at the National Museum of American History, Harriet Tubman’s shawl at the National Museum of African American History and Culture, or Frederic Edwin Church’s majestic “ Niagara ” at the National Gallery of Art? The bathrooms are also much cleaner than those on the Mall. Two things to note: If you’re bringing large bags or coolers for a picnic, you’re going to have to pass through security screenings at the museums, including bag inspections, and you might have to stash larger items in lockers at some Smithsonian museums, or at the National Gallery of Art’s cloakrooms . Also, the Air and Space Museum and the African American History Museum require free timed passes for entry. If advance passes are sold out online, both release same-day passes through their websites, beginning at 8:30 and 8:15 a.m., respectively. National Gallery of Art open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. nga.gov . Smithsonian museums on the Mall open 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. si.edu/visit . Free.

11 a.m.: The Smithsonian Folklife Festival opens

This year’s festival explores two themes: “The Ozarks: Faces and Facets of a Region” and “Creative Encounters: Living Religions in the U.S.” The former explores the Ozarks with bluegrass and gospel music; mountain bike riding demonstrations on a specially built track; and talks and demonstrations covering crafts, cooking, arts and distilling. “Creative Encounters” looks at a wide variety of religions, including Hindu rituals, Native American dance and how food is used in celebrations. Food and drinks related to this year’s themes are available, including barbecue and craft beer. Special attractions on the Fourth include “De Libertate: Songs of Freedom and Hope From Ukraine,” which features four musical groups showcasing their Ukrainian heritage from 2:30 to 4 p.m., and an evening bluegrass concert featuring the acclaimed Ozark Mountain Daredevils from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Festival open from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tents are located on the National Mall between 12 and 14th streets. festival.si.edu . Free.

11:45 a.m.: The National Independence Day Parade

Featuring marching bands from across the nation, military drill units, Revolutionary War reenactors, Scout troops, dance troupes, lavishly decorated floats, giant balloons and everything else you love about a parade, the National Independence Day Parade fills Constitution Avenue between the Archives and the Ellipse. There’s little seating — organizers suggest the steps of the Archives as a prime spot — so try to find a shady place to watch the two-hour parade pass. 11:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. Constitution Avenue NW between Seventh and 17th streets. july4thparade.com . Free.

3 p.m.: Capitol grounds open for ‘A Capitol Fourth’

This only-in-Washington event finds crowds gathering on the Capitol’s West Lawn to watch a free outdoor concert that ends with fireworks over the Washington Monument while the National Symphony Orchestra performs. This year’s edition — the 43rd — is hosted by actor Alfonso Ribeiro, and featured acts include R&B stars Boyz II Men, country duo Maddie and Tae, opera star Renée Fleming, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Belinda Carlisle, Tony-winning Broadway stars Ruthie Ann Miles and Adrienne Warren, and the Muppets. The music begins at 8 p.m., but visitors arrive hours earlier to stake out the best spots. Food and drinks are allowed, though not alcohol or glass bottles. All attendees have to pass through metal detectors, and bags, backpacks and coolers will be searched. (A favorite D.C. insider tip: There’s a dress rehearsal for the concert on July 3, which is also open to the public.) 8 to 9:30 p.m. West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. pbs.org/a-capitol-fourth . Free.

9:09 p.m.: The fireworks

The annual fireworks show, which begins at 9:09 p.m., is the climax of Independence Day celebrations. Rockets are launched from the sides of the Lincoln Memorial’s reflecting pool, so much of the wide-open space between the World War II Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial, including Constitution Gardens, is off-limits to the public. Those who want a front-row seat to watch from the memorials, including the Lincoln, Jefferson and Martin Luther King Jr. memorials, as well as the grounds of the Washington Monument, are screened at designated access points , including on the west side of the Memorial Bridge, at 17th Street at the World War II Memorial, on 15th Street and Madison Drive on the east side of the Washington Monument, and at 23rd Street and Constitution Avenue NW. Another access point is located in West Potomac Park, on East Basin Drive between the Jefferson Memorial and Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial, but the National Park Service says this is just for those who want to view the fireworks around the Tidal Basin, and visitors who enter at that location “will not be able to access the National Mall.”

Restrooms, first aid stations and a family reunification area for children who become separated are all available inside the secure area on the National Mall; maps are available on the Park Service website.
