The Eiffel Tower is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Paris, France. While it may seem like a complex piece of architecture to draw, you can easily sketch it out with a bit of practice. Drawing the Eiffel Tower from a straight-on view will be the easiest, but you can also make it look more impressive by drawing it in 3D perspective. In this article, we’ll walk you step-by-step through both methods that will have you drawing your own Eiffel Tower in no time!

How to Draw a Simple Eiffel Tower

Step 1 Draw a straight guide line down the middle of your paper.

  • Work lightly so you can easily erase your marks if you make a mistake.
  • You can still draw the Eiffel Tower on a horizontal piece of paper, but it would be much smaller than one drawn vertically.
  • Don’t draw the square and triangle too big or else you won’t be able to draw the rest of the tower proportionally correct.
  • Don’t extend the curved lines all the way to the bottom of the page since the legs on the bottom of the Eiffel Tower are straighter.
  • It’s okay if your curves aren’t perfectly parallel with one another since the Eiffel Tower starts to get wider near the bottom.
  • Remember the Eiffel Tower is symmetrical so the left and right side should look the same once you’re finished.
  • Don’t let the top of the curve touch the bottom of the rectangle.

Tip: Make sure the horizontal lines are in the same spot on each side of the tower or else it won’t look symmetrical.

  • You can also add small X-shapes along the viewing platforms and on the bottom arch if you want to add more detail to your drawing.

Step 10 Fill in the rest of the triangles to complete your Eiffel Tower.

  • Try using different sized shading pencils to add highlights and shadows. Create shadows on the underside of the tower by using more pressure, and lightly sketch in areas where the sun might hit it to create highlights.
  • Try using a smudge stick to blend your shading.
  • Add things like trees, benches, and people to the background to bring your drawing to life.

How to Draw the Eiffel Tower in Perspective

Step 1 Draw a straight line down the middle of your paper.

  • In art, perspective refers to the representation of a 3D object in 2D. In this case, you’ll be drawing the Eiffel Tower the way you’d see it if you were standing in front of it and looking up.
  • For this method, you can position your paper either vertically or horizontally.
  • The rectangles are the bottoms of the Eiffel Tower’s viewing platforms.
  • It’s okay to draw the lines through the rectangles at first. Just be sure to erase them so they aren’t in your final drawing.
  • When you’re finished, there will be 15-16 lines from the tip to the top viewing platform, 3-4 lines between the viewing platforms, and 3-4 lines on each leg.

Step 7 Make Xs in each of the spaces along the girders.

Tip: Draw the lines of the X lightly as you’re close to the tip and darker as you get closer to the bottom. That will help give the illusion that the tip is further away than the base.

  • If you want to add more depth to your drawing, make small rectangles instead of single lines. That way, the supports will look three-dimensional.

Step 10 Clean up your drawing to complete it.

Tips from our Readers

  • Use gridding techniques: Lightly draw vertical and horizontal lines to section off your paper before starting. This creates a guide to help correctly size and place each element.
  • Add suitable scenery when complete to give the drawing more context, like trees beside it or the ground and sky. This also helps fill any large blank spaces around the tower.
  • Practice first on scrap paper before drawing on your final sheet. Get comfortable with the process before working on your good paper. This allows you to work out any issues.
  • Outline the final drawing in marker before coloring it in. This keeps the marker from smudging into the colored sections if you accidentally color outside the lines.
  • Erase any initial guide lines you don't need once finished with the drawing. For example, erase the vertical center line if it shows through the tower.

About This Article

To draw the Eiffel Tower from the front, start constructing the basic shape by drawing a curved triangle, and then another smaller one inside of it. Then, capture the levels of the tower by drawing two horizontal lines just below the inner tip, and two more horizontal lines about halfway down the structure. To form the arch at the base of the tower, draw half an oval to connect the two sides. Finally, add details like X’s between the columns to replicate the steel structure. Frequently Asked Questions

What shading techniques work best to give the eiffel tower a sense of depth and dimension.

Shading is a powerful tool to breathe life into your easy Eiffel Tower drawing and create a sense of depth. Begin by identifying the primary light source, usually coming from the top and slightly to one side. The areas directly facing the light will be the brightest, gradually transitioning to darker shades as you move away. Pay attention to the tower’s structure and the various levels; shading can accentuate the different platforms and architectural elements. Soft blending with your pencil or a blending tool can help smooth transitions between light and shadow. Don’t hesitate to experiment and layer different shades to achieve a three-dimensional effect that adds realism and depth to your Eiffel Tower drawing.

What Are Some Tips for Achieving the Symmetrical Shape of the Eiffel Tower?

Achieving the symmetrical shape of the Eiffel Tower is a crucial aspect of capturing its iconic silhouette. To ensure precision, begin by drawing a vertical centerline down the middle of your canvas. This line will serve as a reference point to maintain symmetry in your drawing. As you outline each section of the tower, pay close attention to the corresponding elements on either side of the centerline. Take measurements and compare distances to maintain uniformity. Regularly step back and assess your progress to identify any imbalances and correct them promptly. Remember, symmetry enhances the tower’s elegance, so take your time and make subtle adjustments as needed to achieve a harmonious representation.

The rectangle at the top should be the smallest one while the one at the bottom should be the biggest.

Make sure that the Eiffel Tower will be drawn in the center by drawing an intersecting horizontal and vertical line across your paper to create reference lines.

The vertical line in the middle of your paper is where you should draw all three platforms.

Step 2 – Construct the First Level of the Tower

Create a diagonal leg on both sides underneath the first platform by drawing a pair of parallel diagonal lines with a horizontal line at the bottom.

This leg is the foundation that supports the entire weight of the Eiffel Tower.

Step 3 – Move On to the Tower’s Second Level

Draw two parallel diagonal lines on each side in between the first and the second platform to create the tower’s legs on the second level.

Step 4 – Complete the Structure of the Eiffel Tower

Finalize the form of the Eiffel Tower by drawing by structuring the topmost level of the Eiffel Tower. Simply draw parallel vertical lines that are slightly curved at the bottom.

Make sure that the leg in each level is perfectly aligned with each other to structure the Eiffel Tower proportionally. When drawn correctly, the legs should form a capital letter “A”, as shown in the illustration.

Step 5 – Draw the Pointed Figure at the Very Top

At the very top of the Eiffel Tower, draw a semicircle with a short vertical line above.

This creates the distinct figure situated at the topmost part of the Eiffel Tower.

Step 6 – Add the First Level’s Criss-Cross Iron Poles

Add criss-cross patterns inside each bottom leg.

The criss-cross patterns can be created by simply drawing multiple intersecting diagonal lines.

Step 7 – Next, Add Details on the Second Level

As you can see, the details on the second level are different from the details on the first level of the Eiffel Tower.

But no worries, creating this pattern is as easy as 1-2-3! It is simply a combination of a vertical line and intersecting diagonal lines.

Start by drawing a vertical line inside each leg in the second level. Afterwards, draw intersecting diagonal lines over the vertical line. And there you have it!

Step 8 – Now, Add Details on the Topmost Level

The details on the topmost level are identical to the ones at the bottom. Draw multiple intersecting diagonal lines forming a letter “X” down the length of each leg at the top.

After finishing this step, the details on the legs in all three levels of the Eiffel Tower should not be complete.

Step 9 – Afterwards, Add Details on the Platforms

Since we’ve already finished creating the patterns of the tower’s legs. In this step, we will now be working on the patterns on the horizontal platforms.

Draw multiple parallel vertical lines inside each of the platforms. Keep repeating this step until all three platforms have a similar pattern.

Now that we have successfully drawn a high-rise Eiffel Tower, it’s time for the most enjoyable part, which is picking the colors and coloring your drawing!

Since the Eiffel Tower is made of iron, its natural brown color has changed over the years. It started out as reddish-brown and later turned to yellow-brown.

You can opt to color the Eiffel Tower exactly as it is, or pick your own unique set of colors. We definitely recommend doing the latter to make the most out of your experience.

Bonus: Make Your Eiffel Tower Drawing More Realistic

This drawing of the Eiffel Tower that we just completed takes a stylized approach to this famous landmark. This looks great, but now that you have finished this drawing, you may want to try some different approaches.

One way that you could do this would be to make this drawing more realistic. However, this could be quite a challenge, so it’s something you would certainly want to prepare for.

Perhaps the best way to prepare for this would be to look at pictures of the real Eiffel Tower. This could include photos, diagrams and even other drawings.

The more pictures you can find, the better, as they will give you an idea of what the details and structure should look like. Then, when you have prepared, you can use your references and then apply them to the guide.

You’ll probably want to do a few pencil sketches before you begin, as this will help you to better grasp the finer details. When you have a better idea, you can begin the final drawing.

Using your tools, references and the images in this guide, carefully start drawing out the Eiffel Tower. You can do this in layers, using progressively darker pencils.

When you have a fairly detailed pencil sketch, that’s when you start adding your pen lines or your darkest pencil. If you’re going to all this trouble of making a more detailed representation, then you may as well add some of the surrounding area.

This would be a great way to really make this drawing look even more wonderful, as you would capture the whole landscape! No matter how you choose to finish this drawing, we can then move on to the colors in the final step.

4 More Ways To Make Your Eiffel Tower Drawing Unique

Finish off this depiction of this iconic building with tips for your Eiffel Tower sketch!

We kept the style and details of this Eiffel Tower drawing a bit simpler so that it would be easier to learn. Once you have the hang of this design, you may also want to make it more complex!

You could do this by using photos and drawings of the Eiffel Tower to help you as you add elements and details. This can take a bit more time, but it will be worth it once it is done!

On the other hand, you may want to take it in a different direction and rather make this drawing of the Eiffel Tower even more stylistic. This could be in the form of making the drawing a lot simpler in its design.

Or, you could make it look more stylish by having it twist over the side or curling up at the top. These are just a few of the ways you could take it in an even wackier direction!

How would you like to put a creative spin on the tower?

No matter what style you choose for your Eiffel Tower sketch, you could also make it look even better with some smaller details.

The Eiffel Tower is one of the most iconic landmarks in the world, and many people visit it each day.

You could draw some tiny people on and around the tower for a fun touch! It would be a subtle detail, but it would still look really great.

What other small details can you add?

Finally, you could finish off this wonderful Eiffel Tower drawing by filling in the rest of the background!

If you wanted to make it realistic, you could look up what the backdrop behind the Eiffel Tower looks like in real life.

You could also create your own interpretation of the background and fill it with whatever you like. For example, you could draw and color some fireworks exploding in the background!

Your Eiffel Tower Drawing is Complete!

There you have it—you have successfully drawn and colored a spectacular Eiffel Tower. We think your drawing would look amazing to be hung up on a wall once it is framed!

🖍️ Tools For Success

  • Paper (Our Free How To Draw Template PDF )
  • Polymer Eraser
  • Outline Markers
  • Coloring Tools (I recommend Crayola’s 140 Piece Coloring Case )

🎨 Parents:  The only tools you need to use these how-to-draw tutorials are: an eraser, a pencil, and a piece of paper. But – if you have them around – a sketching pencil makes for fainter and softer lines that help kids build fine motor accuracy. I also recommend going over the sketch pencil with a black outline marker when you’re done for a neater finish. Lastly, erase the pencil marks before adding color.

Step-by-Step Guide on How to Draw An Eiffel Tower

  • Draw three rectangular floors that are horizontally parallel to each other – the bottom floor is the longest and the widest, followed by the one on top of it, and the third one is the tiniest and smallest. On top of them all, draw another small rectangular floor vertically.
  • Beneath the largest floor, draw two slightly diagonal vertical posts to serve as the building’s base. These posts should have broader width than the floors above them.
  • Then, repeat step two, but this time between the widest and the floor next to it. These posts will be smaller than the first.
  • Next, draw two vertical lines on each lower corner of the top floor to connect them with the third floor below them, overlapping the second. After that, connect the second and third floors by drawing a vertical line between them.
  • To make it really look like the Eiffel Tower, let’s add the crisscross lines on its bases.
  • Repeat step five until all posts are covered with crisscross lines. Lastly, draw a curved line between the main pillars, a horizontal line between the second pair of posts, and a vertical line on top.
  • Since Eiffel Tower is a building made of iron, let’s color it gray.
