Awful customer service!

Had a holiday booked for June 2021 which I had bought travel insurance for in January, rang up today to either postpone the insurance until next June as we have delayed the holiday; they asked for £55 to postpone the policy and are only offering 50% of my money back even though I have not claimed any money from them. Disgraceful. Only want the money. Do not use.

Another really bad review for this…

Another really bad review for this company. Took out travel insurance with them and both my wife and I became ill probably due to flying viao Hongkong just before the lock down.. any we needed to see a GP and get antibiotics. Back home I tried claiming for the expense but I got no help at all. Several times they send forms that could not be edited or the wrong claim forms and in between actually sending the wrong claim forms they had to be chased reminded, called, emailed and in the end -this is after several weeks of struggle- I gave up even thought the balance was several hundred pounds it was not worth the stress. We will never use them again in fact Fit2Travel made the experience so bad I wonder if I will even take out travel insurance next time with anyone.

I have a travel insurance policy gold…

I have a travel insurance policy gold premium scheme with them but because of the pandemic, it’s been advised by the government that no travel possible to the Florida. I contacted this company and viola! My family and I are not covered for those reasons. So waste of time and money. Next time I should get a policy that covers all! Or does such policy even exists with these travel insurers???

Good morning,  Thank you for the feedback you have provided, which is valued and appreciated. We are very sorry to hear that you have had a negative experience on this occasion The Fit 2 Travel team

Absolute ripoffs I will never again use them!

Absolute ripoffs I set up my policy for my holiday costing £51, holiday has now been cancelled by tui, called fit2travel to cancel my policy as it is no longer needed and got told they will only refund 50% of the policy minus another 15% admin fee giving me back £11! So they get to rob me of £40 for a policy I won't be using, money for nothing! I will never use them again, I will take this to the insurance ombudsman and the financial services commission as this is unfair charges! *Update They have now replied saying they're glad to have resolved this, their idea of resolving it was to wave the £15 admin fee, they offered me a refund of £26, I received £14 and some odd pence can't even figure out how they came up with that figure! And a discount on any future travel, I definitely will NOT be taking them up on that offer!

Date of experience : 10 August 2020

Good Afternoon, Thank you for updating us regarding your complaint We have looked into this an can confirm unfortunately the incorrect refund had been processed to your account, this has now been rectified and the remainder of the funds will be with you shortly. The Fit 2 Travel Team.

Blatant profiteering will haunt you in future

Much the same as everyone else I can't go on holiday..not my choice but covid 19.this coy have offered 50% less £15 administration fee This is disgraceful behaviour and blatant profiteering due to the pandemic situation I will be reporting this coy but I would let this coy know that people like piers Morgan and Martin Lewis are drawing up names of coys who have treated the paying public dreadfully and without any moral compass for when we recover from this situation brokersure you will suffer long term trust me for the British public will for sure be taking there biz to coys who act and treat the public with compassion during this troubled time

Holiday insurance rip off

I booked to travel to Turkey in June but due to covid jet 2 cancelled my holiday. I booked my travel insurance with fit 2 travel at a cost of £45 for 2 weeks. I tried many times to phone them and eventually got thru and tried to cancel the policy and requested a refund. They said I would get 50% back less another £15admin charge that meant I would only get back £7.50 didn't have any choice about cancelling the holiday. I would except the £15 admin charge but to take 50% aswell is in my opinion not fair. Apart from this I have heard nothing about any refund since. Jet2 paid back the full amount of my holiday without charge. So why can't the insurance do the same its a disgrace, I will never use this company again and would advise others not to either. Having written this revue my issue has been resolved to a satisfactory result so full credit to them for doing this promptly .

Wouldn't cover me for cancellation of… corona virus

Wouldn't cover me for cancellation of my holiday because of coronavirus even though i have platinum cover. Apparently they don't cover cancellation if the FCO advises against travel? Ridiculous money grabbing scammers. As promised, here is your bad review. AVOID!!!!

Fraudulent Company

Awful, fraudulent, stay away. I travelled to Turkey and became seriously ill. I contacted Fit2Travel, to be seen by a medical staff, they said "You may need to pay for the initial appointment and then once we have a medical report our claims team will contact you with regards to re-imbursing. When I visited the hospital suggested by Fit2Travel, they asked for £500, I was shocked and I didn't have this money. Fit2Travel made a mockery out of my health. When I made this travel insurance, it didn't mention that I would be expected to pay for anything, specially a medical emergency. I would like to highlight that this was not an existing health condition, it was a medical emergency. They completely ignored what I was saying. When I returned to the UK, my GP had to see me immediately because of the state that I was in, the GP asked why I hadn't seeked medical treatment earlier, I explained that my policy holder put me through all of this. I am still having to get treatment from my GP because my health emergency was ignored by Fit2Travel. Fit2Travel should be reported to the Financial Conduct Authority for fraud. They take peoples money and they don't fulfil their part of the legal contract.

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!

Took out insurance with fit2travel in December 2019 - they refuse any refund as apparently its my fault that I'd not seen the current pandemic in my crystal ball. Just another rip off insurance company.

Do not use.

We originally purchased platinum cover back in January 2020 before the covid 19 pandemic began. We were unable to go on our 2020 holiday in August due to personal health circumstances so we asked to move the policy to 2021. They originally said there would be no charge for this but tried to charge us an admin fee. After much communication, they eventually waived the fee. Jet2 now cancelled the 2021 holiday so we rang to ask to move the policy to 2022. The company refused to move it as the holiday would be 2 years after we purchased the policy even though the policy had not been used. We asked for a refund, but due to admin fees they refused to refund the full amount. Because of this we have lost over 50% of the fee we paid. *The day after this complaint was made, we received a phone call offering more money back and discount on our next purchase. Good customer service after they listened to the phone conversation back.

UNFit2Travel

This company had the audacity to tell me that "Please be assured that we understand the exceptional circumstances related to the cancellation of your trip, but they MUST adhere to their terms and conditions". I haven't even reached my travel date yet (holiday due to start on 22nd May), but they tell me that if I cancel I loose 50% of the policy amount and less a £15 admin charge. I paid almost £95, due to medical conditions, this means a refund less that £33, plus they had the nerve to offer me a 10% discount on a future policy. I am not cancelling because I want to, I am cancelling because of a worldwide pandemic which is stopping everyone travelling. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. Google "Fit2Travel reviews", out of 46 reviews all 46 gave 1 Star and note the standard company response to most of them!! I note the reputable Travel Insurance companies are giving full refunds and I shall definitely be using one of those in future!!

Dear Sir Thank you for taking the time to provide us with feedback regarding your recent experience. We are very sorry to hear you were unhappy with the outcome of your request to cancel your travel insurance policy and we do understand your disappointment and frustration. We are able to amend your travel insurance free of charge to a date in the future to cover an alternative trip with just any difference in premium being payable. Unfortunately as the broker we have to handle any cancellation request in accordance with instructions provided by the insurers that underwrite the policy. In the case of Fit2Travel they have advised us to follow the terms and conditions laid down in the policy wording as regards cancellation charges and administration fees. We regrettably are therefore unable to offer a full refund on this occasion as we simply cannot finance these costs directly ourselves. We can also offer you a discount against a future policy to try to help offset this cost but appreciate this may not be of assistance at this most difficult of times, especially for the travel sector. Worst people ever

Worst. People. Ever. Absolutley no attempts on their part to help customers. They simply take your money and wash their hands of you, even when you have a legitimate claim!! If you like throwing money into a pile of sick, Fit2Travel is a very big bucket to throw it into. Do not trust these trolls. They did nothing to help me make a claim and did even less when I demanded a refund. Their policies previously weren't anywhere to be seen when applying are now suddenly in plain sight, and its no suprise that I wouldn't of given them money if I knew they'd offer no refunds, period. Absolute scum. (Update) - Dear Fit2Travel, you can't suddenly try to look as though you're willing to help after you've had 5 months to fix this. Pathetic. This is what happens when you ditch your customers. I even told the comparison site I found you on not to do business with you, and you're being reviewed given you have 100% 1-star reviews. This is everything you deserve.

Disgusted by this company’s policy re…Covid19

Disgusted by this company’s policy re Covid19 cancellation. I was told they would contact in holiday date order, but my date passed 6/5/20 & no contact. I contacted my hotel and flight provider Myself (not a package holiday) and both were incredibly helpful in rearranging my trip to May 2021. Eventually 8 days after my holiday was supposed to start I’ve been contacted by the broker, after several emails. I wanted to know if I could do the same with my insurance policy as hotel/flight and move to next year. I expected to be told that there would be an additional cost, however I was told that I had to buy a new policy for the holiday next year and only then would I be refunded this years cost. By this point I think I’m being scammed, and could only imagine what tactics they would use if you ever made a claim! So I’ve cancelled - will only get 20% of cost back but but would rather that than trust this company. Just for the record in 46 years of travelling abroad I have never made a claim.

Fit2Travel Insurance not Fit for purpose - Appalling

Renewed our annual travel insurance policy in good faith in Feb and even upgraded the policy from Gold to Platinum! Booked a villa in Feb and paid a 2k deposit. Had to cancel in Aug due to the FCO guidance of only essential travel is made to Ibiza. Contacted Fit2travel about obtaining a refund and were advised we were not covered even though their website did state any travel booked prior to March should not be affected by Covid related claims. We were advised on the phone not to travel and not to pay the balance. So, if we had travelled, we would not be insured and it also turns out we are not insured when we don’t travel, so we were screwed either way, what is the point in paying for travel insurance. We submitted a complaint and were advised it could take 8 weeks to investigate, however we received a reply the very same day, not much investigation gone into our complaint! We have now escalated this to the FSA. This company is absolutely disgraceful to deal with, the 97% of 1 star reviews say it all. They don’t even deserve 1 star, the policies are not fit for purpose and they are not fit to call themselves a travel insurance company!

My Wife and I had the misfortune of…

My Wife and I had the misfortune of using this firm for our holiday insurance. After answering all the questions we paid our price which was inflated by my wife's condition. We had a holiday booked for Bulgaria and had to cancel because my wife was unfit to travel. I was able to cancel the hotel who were most accommodating but could not cancel the flights and transfers. Our experience with the above firm was very bad and I advise anybody to think twice and read the small print. Our claim was for £460 and we got £60 as they charge £200 per person per claim. Apart from this it took me 5 months to get my money, with them putting every excuse possible to avoid payment and of course all the work done by the customer to satisfy their requests. As pensioners it is not easy these days to save for a holiday and fall foul of parasitic practices such as these. Two tips for people willing to be swayed by low prices are, make the claim as large as you can and be prepared to wait as your case like mine will be handed over to a central depot who's sole aim is to delay and frustrate.

Will not cover you when you really need it. I hope the amount of bad press this awful company is getting will see it shut down. no help when it is needed most. they backtracked on everything they promised me when i signed up for this policy and had to cancel. i feel so let down and I hope this company never trades again for the hurt and upset it has caused so many people who were foolish enough to trust it.

Do not use this company. Travel insurance for medical conditions. However as my holiday was cancelled due to Covid19 and there being no flights. 50% of policy premium and £15 admin charge to cancel. Absolutely disgusting under the circumstances 😡😡

Shocking customer service go elsewhere

Purchased travel insurance the money was taken immediately but never received any insurance documents. When I contacted this company they informed me that I had submitted an incorrect email (who would do that) instead of contacting me to get the correct email they chose not to bother thereby leaving us wondering whether we were insured. They informed me that the email was sent and received just didn't take my word for anything My email address is a BT email well known to all users extremely poor customer service I asked for a refund but was refused.

I will actually give you no stars but…

I will actually give you no stars but cannot do that. My son Henry, was on holiday in Cuba at the beginning of the month with the Fit 2 Travel Platinum Insurance. He fell ill in Cuba, was taken to hospital and diagnosed with pancreatitis. Trying to make a claim on his behalf has been nothing but a joke as the insurance company are doing everything possible to try and discredit him, finding all sorts of excuses why you don't have to pay out anything, largely based on completely wrong notes. Because drink is seen to be one of the main causes of pancreatitis, he was labelled an alcoholic by the hospital, and Fit 2 Travel are using this as the excuse for not making a payment for his illness. One thing he is NOT is an alcoholic. Currently my son is very unwell in the Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham an the consultants are not sure he will live. The pancreatitis has aslo damaged his brian in 3 places but the extent of this damage will not be known until he is fully awake. Currently, he is sedated for much of the time I have spent over £66,000 to repatriate him via air ambulance and will be getting a bill of around £25,000 for his hospital stay. I may also be faced with solicitors bills to try to get this put right. My next stop will be to discredit the company via the BBC programme Watchdog. Keith Ambrose.

Fit2Travel Travel Insurance Review: What You Need to Know

As a specialist travel insurance provider for those with pre-existing conditions, Fit2Travel may be able to provide the cover you need even if you've suffered from a serious medical condition. Even if other travel insurance providers won't offer cover due to your individual medical situation, Fit2Travel may be more able to do so.

While Fit2Travel prices are typically competitive, nonetheless it's always wise to check prices with a number of providers before making a purchase.

We should point out one somewhat recent—and positive—change to their cover. Fit2Travel used to offer scheduled airline failure cover. They've taken this out, but have added in its place cover for end supplier failure (for gold and platinum cover). Read about the differences in depth here —but in essence, the cover is now better. Why? Scheduled airline failure cover only covers if your airline goes bust. But end supplier failure can cover airlines or other providers like accommodation. Also, the amount of cover has increased from Fit2Travel (e.g. from £1,500 of scheduled airline failure cover to £5,000 of end supplier failure for platinum plans).

Pre-Existing Conditions: Fit2Travel will consider cover for all pre-existing medical conditions on all policies. In fact, Fit2Travel is accustomed to providing cover for those with multiple medical conditions, and a number of conditions are included as standard without an extra premium required. To get a quote and buy a policy, through Fit2Travel's online screening process you'll be asked a series of questions to assess your situation.

When applying online, you'll be walked through Fit2Travel's easy-to-use online screening to get instant quotes straight away, and instant confirmation that the conditions you entered are indeed covered. It just takes a few minutes and the questions are quite clear. You'll find out immediately if Fit2Travel can offer you cover and at what price. Many conditions are included as standard (without you needing to pay an extra premium).

Over 65s: The upper age limit for travellers on Fit2Travel annual multi-trip policies is under 75 years of age at the start of the policy; the upper age limit on Single Trip policies is 85 years of age.

Gadget cover: There's no gadget cover as standard, even on the highest tier of cover. If you want cover for devices like mobiles phones, e-readers, laptops and tablets, you can buy the optional gadget extension—but this is limited to £1,000 of cover, which may be less than you need and is less than what's offered by some competitors like CoverForYou , which offers £1,000, £2,000 or £3,000 of total gadget cover.

Mobility equipment: If your mobility equipment is delayed, lost, stolen or accidentally damage, you'll get up to £1,000 on gold and platinum plans.

Covid-19 cover: Unfortunately, the cover for coronavirus-related claims is less robust than come competitors. You can read more in their policy documents (they don't seem to have Covid information readily available on their website, unfortunately), but here is a brief overview.

You are covered in case of Covid-19 for:

  • if you're denied boarding on inbound journey (up to £40/24 hrs, max £560, for accommodation and money for alternative transport, £300 from Europe and £500 elsewhere)
  • if you have to cancel or cut a trip short because you, or anyone insured on the policy, became ill with Covid-19

But you're not covered if:

  • you went against FCDO, government, local authority or medical advice relating to any infectious disease including COVID-19
  • you have to cancel or cut a trip short because a travel companion, a family member, a close business colleague, or the person you were going to stay with became ill with Covid-19
  • you chose or were recommended to quarantine or isolate as a result of exposure to an infectious disease including Covid-19
  • due to FCDO, government or local authority advice relating to any infectious disease including Covid-19

Change to policy wordings: In October 2023 Fit2Travel updated their policy wordings, and the biggest change related to language around alcohol consumption. Where last year the language referred to "excessive alcohol consumption" or "alcohol abuse" they now use the term "alcohol misuse". This comes into play because they won't pay claims related to alcohol misuse—which they define as drinking enough alcohol that a. your decision making is seriously affected or b. you suffer injury or illness from either long-term alcohol abuse or an individual drinking session. It seems that the new term of "misuse" might apply to more situations, so just an FYI.

Bottom Line: Expect Fit2Travel quotes to be competitive, hopefully allowing you to travel even if you've suffered from a serious medical condition. And policies include repatriation for you and a companion, should it be medically necessary. But, and this is a big BUT, their cover for Covid-19 could be better. Something to keep in mind...

How do Fit2Travel Prices Compare?

Overall, we found that Fit2Travel prices for travel insurance with pre-existing medical conditions are very competitive relative to other medical-specialist travel insurers. When compared to Free Spirit and GoodToGo, Fit2Travel's prices were cheaper for most medical conditions for our sample holidaymakers. For example, Fit2Go came in cheaper for those with high blood pressure & cholesterol (on one medication), anxiety & depression (on one medication), breast cancer (spread to one lymph node, 3 to 5 years ago), asthma with chronic airway obstruction.

However, Fit2Go was not always cheaper—for those with a heart attack and stent needing cover for a worldwide trip, Free Spirit provided cheaper travel insurance cover. We tested single trip travel to both EuropeAmerica .

Fit2Travel Customer Reviews

There aren't very many customer reviews online, but all of the ones we could find are negative. A few of the complaints are related to policy terms such as the excess being payable per person or a limit on jewellery. Other negative comments are more worrisome. Here is a selection from Trustpilot , where 14 customers have left reviews averaging just 1.9 out of 5 stars:

"... hospitalised by a heart attack and told he needs a pacemaker fitting and this company have left them in limbo for over a month with no decision as to what can be done..." "Our claim was for £460 and we got £60 as they charge £200 per person per claim." "... because ferrys are not classed as public transport we couldn't claim for anything and also told we were only insured for our outbound journey and not back to the UK..." "Our connecting flight was cancelled and we were left stranded with the airline taking no responsibility due to the cancellation being caused by bad weather... it turns out connecting flights are not covered. At all."

Fit2Travel Standard Features

As with most travel insurance plans, Fit2Travel includes cover for Emergency Medical, Cancellation and Baggage on all policies, limits for which can be found below in the Policies section. For more complete details like inner limits and exclusions, please see the policy documents .

Fit2Travel Optional Extra Coverages

Fit2Travel offers extra coverage for trips that may not be otherwise covered by traditional travel insurance. For instance, travellers can buy cover for a cruise, golf trip, winter sports, wedding, and even fishing trips.

Be aware that costs of private treatment aren't covered unless Fit2Travel's 24-hour Emergency Assistance Facilities service has agreed and adequate public facilities are not available. You can reach Fit2Travel's 24 hour Emergency Medical Assistance Facilities at +44 (0) 1243 621 501. You may need to pay the policy excess locally and ask the hospital to send the rest of their bills to Travel Claims Facilities at: CEGA Claims Service, PO Box 127, Chichester, West Sussex, PO18 7WQ.

Fit2Travel Travel Insurance Cover Plans & Limits

Travellers can choose between the Silver, Gold and Platinum Fit2Travel plans, depending on the level of cover they need. For instance, those with holidays worth around £5,000 would opt for the Platinum plan, whereas those only needing £1,000 to cover non-refundable travel and accommodation expenses might find the Silver plan to be sufficient.

To better understand the value of Fit2Travel travel insurance you need to look at it in the context of other available options. We compared it to other plans in the market so you can see which may be more suitable for you.

Fit2Travel vs Free Spirit Travel Insurance

Free Spirit

Another medical-specialist for those travelling with health conditions, Free Spirit offers a host of optional extras like aftercare following hospitalisation abroad, which covers home help, cosmetic surgery, dental treatment, physiotherapy and UK convalescence. Prices are typically close to average, although can vary depending on the condition.

Bottom Line: Free Spirit provides robust aftercare once you return home to the UK (e.g., physiotherapy, cosmetic surgery, etc.), but Fit2Travel stands out for lower prices in most cases. If price is a priority, Free Spirit is likely to be cheaper (but we recommend checking both to be sure).

Fit2Travel Travel Insurance vs goodtogoinsurance.com Travel Insurance

goodtogoinsurance.com

Another medical-specialist for those travelling with health issues, goodtogoinsurance.com offers a host of optional extras like 24/7 Virtual Doctor to speak with a UK doctor for advice whilst abroad and Gadget cover. All plans include financial failure and repatriation, plus home help and a recuperation holiday post emergency surgery abroad if you stayed in hospital for 5 days.

Bottom Line: goodtogoinsurance.com provides lots of extra perks like an optional 24/7 Virtual Doctor, aftercare once you return home to the UK (e.g., home help) and recuperation holidays, but Fit2Travel stands out for cheaper prices. If price is a priority, you might find a cheaper rate from Fit2Travel but, as always, check prices from both before deciding.

awful company - avoid at all costs!

My partner has tried yet again to claim money back when his trip was cancelled. Why sell insurance if you are not prepared to pay out? They have awful reviews across the board - do not use!

do not use Fit2travel for holiday…

do not use Fit2travel for holiday insurance, where by some companys are being flexible around transfering booking due to covid 19 uncertanty, they are not, they do not care about good reviews and customer relations, I will be cancelling my policy but will be sure to spend my hard earned money with a more caring company and I hope the £58 they will take from me is worth the loss of future custom They offer 50% refund with a whopping £15 admin fee We are advised to take out holiday insurance as soon as you book your holiday beware the date you can amend is 12 months from when you take out cover not from when you travel

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY

The buying of the insurance was easy and our insurance documents were sent to us quickly, we went for the platinum cover. Unfortunately we needed to make a claim our 9 month old baby was very unwell in Mexico, we had to see the emergency doctor at our hotel, we thought this might not be covered and were ok to pay what this cost (it wasn’t covered). The doctor said we needed to take our baby to hospital and to call the insurance company to see what one they recommended - the only hospital they would allow us to use was the state hospital in Cancun, the doctor said it was a hours drive and in a dangerous location. She also said it was the first time in all her years working there that an insurance company has said to use that hospital for a tourist. Make sure you read the small print, it says medical cover up to £10 million but only at a state hospital unless they give you authorisation and it they won’t authorise treatment for a 9 month old sick baby...I’m not sure what they would.

AVOID AVOID JUST WISH I WOULD HAVE READ THESE REVIEWS FIRST

They do not even deserve 1 star but had to put something to do the review.I wish I would have read these reviews before using this company! I took out the platinum policy for my holiday as didn't want to skimp if needed to claim not thinking that I would need to anyway.. but on our return journey home from the Greek islands due to high winds all ferrys were cancelled by the port authorities so we were unable to get off the island of ios to catch our connecting flight in santorini this led us to have to stay on the island till the boats were running again which wasn't till 2 days later so we were forced to pay out for 2 days accomadation and purchase new flights which fit2travel said we would be able to claim for ..however on our return our claim was declined saying that because ferrys are not classed as public transport we couldn't claim for anything and also told we were only insured for for our outbound journey and not back to the UK!! This is disgusting as who in there right mind would only want to be covered one way !! I will be taking this to a solicitor and am disgusted with the company so please please AVOID THIS COMPANY and save your money and go elsewhere..

Worst insurance Company

I searched for travel insurance on a comparison site and this Company was the cheapest for all my requirements so I took the plunge. I was extremely unlucky and discovered my wallet was either lost or stolen whilst at the airport and had to make a claim. I reported this immediately to the airport and Police then informed the insurance who told me to make a claim on my return. This is were it started to go wrong since then the following as happened. 1. I sent all the information in via email but was told to send it again as it was on the wrong form. 2. Sent all the information in again they told me they didn't receive part of it. 3. Wrote my email address down wrong despite confirming it was correct over the phone so I never received any communication. 4. Told me to get a report from the Police despite me giving them the reference number and informing them that the Police have said they have to get the report. 5. You can't talk to them directly and it's a one week turnaround after any request. You have to go through an agent so can never talk to the person who deals with your claim directly. It's now seven weeks since this happened and after numerous communication I am still waiting on a decision despite the Company advertising a 10-15 wait for a decision.

Unfit2Travel-Insure - Don't Bother Booking Insurance With Fit2travel

As others have mentioned, offered a 50% refund minus £15 admin fee due to Covid-19 with customer service blaming the underlying insurance company for this. All I wanted was to move my insurance by 12 months due to moving the holiday. However I was told the policy could only be moved by 12 months from the date of purchase. Being pro-acvtive this was booked back in October (7 months before travel). Which means I would need to travel by the end of September (not happening). Have travelled with in the past and luckily never had to make a claim, otherwise probably wouldn't be a great experience. Lesson learnt, I (nor any of my friends/family who have booked with them off of the back of my recommendation) will not be booking any policies with them again. I will also bad mouth Fit2travel to anyone who wants to listen now - starting with Quidco who I will be logging a complaint with for recommending them in the first place through Quidco Compare. I pointed out the irony that every other element of the holiday has allowed us to cancel for a full refund or defer for 12 months (to coincide with new holiday), except for the travel insurance. UPDATE: No partial refund received so far, despite chasing & almost 3 months on. IN RESPONSE TO FIT2TRAVEL: I have emailed twice in the past week. Waiting to hear back on latest email. IN RESPONSE TO FIT2TRAVEL: You must have an inbox very busy with complaints from people that haven't received a refund for almost 3 months to not be able to locate mine. My point is, as a company you are happy to ignore the private emails, but very responsive with public reviews / comments.

Thank you for the update, we are very sorry to hear you have not received your refund please can you email your policy number to: [email protected] so we can fully investigate your complaint. The Fit2 Travel Team Thanks for coming back to us but we do need either a name , postcode or policy number to locate your information. Avoid this insurance company...

This company's insurance policies are largely worthless. Their detailed terms and conditions exclude many unfortunate incidents that a traveller is likely to experience, including most forms of cancellation. To refuse all insurance payouts due to Covid-19 is terrible and just highlights what a dodgy operation this company is running.

PLATINUM COVER - BASICALLY NO MEDICAL COVER! DO NOT USE!!!

I spent around £80 to insure me and my girlfriend for a trip to Mexico, I was conscious not to by the cheapest insurance I could find and so went for the platinum cover which had a great defaqto rating and good amounts of cover. A few days into the holiday, my girlfriend had a blocked ear (we think from spending so much time in the water), it wasn't unblocking itself after a couple of days and we were worried about it becoming infected. This is when I pulled out the insurance documents and read a few finer details. Turns out that you're not covered for seeing a private doctor without ringing and getting permission from the insurance company. I rang them and it was quite obvious for the start there was no way they would authourise us to go to a private doctor. But what is a private doctor in Mexico? It's not the same as the UK. Every doctor within 2 hours was a 'private' doctor, including the one on our holiday complex - which if I remember correct was around £120 for a consultation. I spoke to our rep and she said that the only non private doctor she had known was for the very poorest people, she told me how one of her fellow reps had been there and that it was basically a room where people are sat all over the place and are quite literally dying. So there we are, in Mexico, with basically no medical cover, and no means of getting any other insurance as we were already on holiday. If one of us had of broken our leg, we would have had a huge bill on our hands and we spent the latter part of our holiday being a little more cautious with that in mind. Anyway, ear unblocked and we got away scot free. But NEVER again would I used Fit2travel, and I will always read the fine print.

Like many other people

Like many other people we were meant to be going on holiday last August but due to Covid we had to postpone it to this year we were told that we could only get a 50% refund and we would also have to pay £15 admin but could transfer it to this year at no extra cost so we opted for this unfortunately in July my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer i duly informed fit 2 travel and was told that I only needed to inform them once all treatment was finished all now done (good news cancer all gone) rang them today to tell them only to be told that there is now an extra £74.54 to be paid as it now an existing condition. Basically told if we didn’t want to pay it we could cancel the policy but we would only get 50% back less £15 admin fee. Needless to say not very happy with the company and wish I had seen all the bad reviews before purchasing the policy. Update fit 2travel rung my wife today and told her that they were sorry for the extra charge and agreed that now she is Cancer free that they had made a mistake and have said they will refund the extra payment can only congratulate them on their quick response and actions

Thank you for taking the time to leave us this review. We are very sorry to hear that you are unhappy on this occasion, and appreciate you bringing this to our attention. We do of course appreciate that any additional premium is never welcome, however when changes to the original cover are made, this can result in an increase in premium, as additional cover is being provided. Thank you for taking the time to talk to us today about your policy. We are pleased to have been able to resolve your issue, however should you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us.

Holiday cancelled

Fairer Finance

In July 2020, The Times newspaper ran a story reporting that the General Medical Council was taking TIF’s chief medical officer  to a “fitness to practice” tribunal, accusing him of "impairment by misconduct”. TIF says it takes advice from a number of doctors, and says its chief medical officer denies the allegations. Until this case is resolved, we have removed our ratings of TIF products

How to Find the Best Travel Insurance

Elina Geller

Many or all of the products featured here are from our partners who compensate us. This influences which products we write about and where and how the product appears on a page. What travel insurance covers

How much does travel insurance cost, types of travel insurance, how to get travel insurance, what to look for in travel insurance, best travel insurance comparison sites, which insurance company is best for travel insurance, when to skip travel insurance, travel insurance, recapped.

Travel insurance can cover medical expenses, emergencies, trip interruptions, baggage, rental cars and more.

Cost is affected by trip length, pre-existing medical conditions, depth of coverage, your age and add-ons.

You can get it through credit cards or third-party companies, & can shop on travel insurance comparison sites.

Before buying, evaluate risks, know existing coverage, obtain quotes online and review policy details warily.

Skip it if you buy flexible airfare and hotels, already have coverage or only book refundable activities.

Booking travel always carries some degree of uncertainty. Travel insurance provides a safety net so you can step out with confidence. You may not need travel insurance for inexpensive trips, but it can provide a sense of security when you prepay for pricey reservations, a big international trip or travel during cold and flu season, which can be unpredictable.

According to insurance comparison site Squaremouth, travelers in 2023 spent an average of $403 for comprehensive coverage, compared to $96 for medical-only policies. Comprehensive plans typically cost between 5% and 10% of the insured trip cost.

Since that price tag is no small amount, it helps to know how to shop smart for travel insurance. Here's how to find the right travel insurance plan for you and your next adventure.

Depending on the type of coverage you’re looking for, the chart below will help you determine what to look for when selecting a policy:

Depending on the policy, travel insurance reimburses you or offers services when something goes awry. There’s even coverage for the worst-case scenario: if you die in an accident while traveling. Accidental death coverage pays your beneficiary a lump sum in that case.

Before you buy, take a little time to get familiar with different types of travel insurance products, how it’s priced, and what it covers and excludes. If you’re traveling during these uncertain times, you’ll want to make sure that the policy you select covers coronavirus-related emergencies. Usually, the more thorough the coverage, the more it will cost.

Travel insurance costs vary depending on:

Length and cost of the trip: The longer and more expensive the trip, the higher the policy cost.

Cost of local health care: High health-care costs in your destination can drive up the price of trip insurance.

Medical conditions you want covered: Conditions you already have will increase the cost of travel insurance coverage.

Amount and breadth of coverage: The more risks a policy covers, the more it will cost.

Your age: Generally the older you are, the higher the price.

Any optional supplement you add to your policy : Cancel For Any Reason , Interrupt For Any Reason and more.

Keep these factors in mind when considering different travel insurance options.

You’ll find a wide selection of travel protection plans when you shop for a policy.

Typically, travel insurance is sold as a package, known as a comprehensive plan, which includes a variety of coverage.

Here are seven of the most common types of travel insurance:

Travel medical insurance

These plans provide health insurance while you’re away from home. Although in some ways these policies work like traditional health plans, generally you cannot use travel health insurance for routine medical events. For example, a routine medical checkup is usually not covered. In addition, these policies often include limitations on coverage and exclusions for pre-existing conditions.

Although most travel insurance plans cover many recreational activities, such as skiing and horseback riding, they often exclude adventure sports, such as skydiving or parasailing, or competition in organized sporting events. You may need to buy a special travel policy designed for adventure or competitive sports.

International travel insurance

Most likely, your U.S.-based medical insurance will not work while you’re traveling internationally, and Medicare does not provide any coverage once you leave the United States outside of a few very specific exemptions. If you plan on traveling abroad, purchasing travel medical insurance could make a lot of sense.

Trip cancellation, interruption and delay

Trip cancellation coverage reimburses you for prepaid, nonrefundable expenses if the tour operator goes out of business or you have to cancel the trip for one of the covered reasons outlined in the policy, such as:

Your own illness.

The illness or death of a family member who’s not traveling with you.

Natural disasters.

Trip interruption insurance covers the nonrefundable cost of the unused portion of the trip if it is interrupted due to a reason outlined in the policy.

Trip delay coverage reimburses you for expenses such as lodging and meals if you’re delayed during a trip (e.g., your flight gets canceled due to weather ).

Many package policies cover all three. These policies are different from the cancellation waivers that cruise lines and tour operators offer, the Insurance Information Institute says. Waivers are cheap, ranging from $40 to $60, and often include restrictions. For example, according to the institute, waivers might not refund your money if you cancel immediately before departure. Waivers are technically not insurance policies.

Some companies offer additional layers of coverage at extra cost. “Cancel For Any Reason” coverage will reimburse a large part of the trip cost, no matter why you back out. And some companies let you pay extra to cover pre-existing conditions if you cancel for medical reasons.

Some insurers and comparison sites let you customize a policy by choosing types of coverage a la carte. For example, TravelInsurance.com is a comparison site that provides quotes from different providers.

Baggage and personal belongings

How does lost luggage insurance work? This coverage reimburses you for baggage and personal belongings that are lost, stolen or damaged during the trip. Some plans also reimburse you for extra expenses if you experience a baggage delay for more than a certain period, such as 12 hours.

Your renters or homeowners insurance may cover personal belongings while you are traveling. It’s best to review your homeowners insurance policy to determine the level of coverage it provides so you do not end up paying for a benefit you already have.

» Learn more: Baggage insurance explained

Emergency medical assistance, evacuation and repatriation

This coverage pays medical expenses if you get sick or injured on a trip . Medical evacuation coverage pays for transporting you to the nearest hospital, and medical repatriation pays for flying you to your home country.

» Learn more: Can I get travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions?

24-hour assistance

This service is included with many package plans. The insurer provides a 24-hour hotline that you can call when you need help, such as booking a flight after a missed connection, finding lost luggage, or locating a doctor or lawyer.

Generally, travel insurance companies do not cover sports or any activity that can be deemed risky. If you’re thinking of incorporating adventurous activities into your vacation, choose a plan that includes adventure sports coverage.

Most travel insurers cover a wide array of services, but the specific options vary. Some plans include concierge services, providing help with restaurant referrals, tee time reservations and more. Many services also offer information before the trip, such as required vaccinations. The only way to know what’s included is to read the policy.

» Learn more: Should you insure your cruise?

Accidental death and dismemberment insurance

This coverage pays a lump sum to your beneficiary, such as a family member, if you die in an accident while on the trip. Accidental death and dismemberment insurance policies also pay a portion of the sum to you if you lose a hand, foot, limb, eyesight, speech or hearing. Some plans apply only to accidental death in a plane.

This coverage may be duplicative if you already have sufficient life insurance, which pays out whether you die in an accident or from an illness. You may also already have accidental death and dismemberment insurance through work, so it's best to check your policies to ensure you’re not overpaying.

Rental car coverage

Rental car insurance pays for repairing your rental car if it’s damaged in a wreck, by vandals or in a natural disaster. The coverage doesn't include liability insurance, which pays for damage to other vehicles or for the medical treatment of others if you cause an accident and are held responsible.

Ask your car insurance company whether your policy will cover you when renting cars on the trip. U.S. car insurance policies generally don’t cover you when driving in other countries, except Canada.

Car insurance requirements are complex because they vary among countries. You can usually purchase liability insurance from the rental car company. Learn about car insurance requirements by searching for auto insurance by country on the U.S. Embassy website .

A note about single vs. long-term policies

Single trip insurance plans are a great option for those going on a single trip for a specific length of time (e.g., a two-week vacation) and then returning home. The price of the policy is usually determined by the cost of the trip.

Long-term travel policies cover you for multiple trips, but there are limitations to how long you can be away from home, if you can return home during your travels and how many trips you can take. In addition, trip cancellation and interruption coverage is either not offered or capped at a dollar amount that can be significantly below the total cost of all the trips taken during the covered period.

Long-term travel insurance plans — often called 'multi-trip' or 'annual travel insurance' — are a suitable option for those who travel often and are satisfied with the amount of trip cancellation coverage for all the trips they take over the duration of the policy.

» Learn more: How annual (multi-trip) travel insurance works

Below, we include how to obtain travel insurance, along with the pros and cons of each option.

Some credit cards offer trip cancellation and rental car insurance if you use the card to book the trip or car.

When you book a trip with your credit card, depending on the card you use, you may already receive trip cancellation and interruption coverage.

Keep these tips in mind when you’re considering a trip insurance policy.

Evaluate the financial risks you face when traveling. Can you bear those costs yourself, or do you want insurance?

Examine what coverage you already have: Does your credit card offer travel insurance? Do you have renters or homeowners insurance to cover belongings? What is the deductible? Will your health plan cover you in all the locations where you travel?

Get quotes for trip insurance online. Choose a package of the benefits you need and compare prices for similar coverage among carriers.

Narrow your choices and then read the policy fine print to understand what’s covered, what’s excluded and the limits on coverage. You may find that the lowest-priced policy is too restrictive and that paying a little more gets you the coverage you need. Or you might find that the cheapest, most basic policy fits the bill.

There are a few scenarios when spending extra on travel insurance doesn't really make sense, like:

You booked flexible airline tickets.

Your hotel room has a good cancellation policy.

It's already included in your credit card.

You haven't booked any nonrefundable activities.

» Learn more: When you don't need travel insurance

Yes, especially for nonrefundable trips and travel during the COVID-era. Whether you purchase a comprehensive travel insurance policy or have travel insurance from your credit card, you shouldn't travel without having some sort of travel protection in place to safeguard you and your trip. Travel insurance can protect you in case of an unexpected emergency such as a canceled flight due to weather, a medical event that requires hospitalization, lost luggage and more.

There are many good travel insurance policies out there and a policy that may be great for you may not be good for someone else. Selecting the best plan depends on what coverage you would like and your trip details.

For example, World Nomads offers a comprehensive travel insurance policy that has excellent coverage for adventure sports. Allianz provides coverage for trips of varying lengths of time through its single trip plans and multi-trip plans. Some providers offer add-on options like Cancel For Any Reason travel insurance. If you’re not sure which plan to go with, consider looking at trip insurance comparison sites like Squaremouth or Insuremytrip.

Yes, you can. However, it's better to purchase it sooner rather than later, ideally right after booking your trip because the benefits begin as soon as you purchase a policy.

Let’s say you’re going on a trip in a month and a week before departure, you fall and break your leg. If you’ve purchased a travel insurance policy, you can use your trip cancellation benefits to get your nonrefundable deposit back.

Most comprehensive travel insurance plans offer trip cancellation, trip interruption, emergency medical and dental, medical evacuation, trip delay and lost luggage coverage. Many plans offer COVID coverage, but you’ll always want to check to ensure that the policy you choose provides that benefit if you’re traveling during these times. Some plans may also allow you to add features like Cancel For Any Reason travel insurance.

It depends which credit card you have. Premium travel cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve® and The Platinum Card® from American Express offer travel insurance benefits if you book a trip using your card or points.

However, the coverage provided by the credit cards is usually lower than if you purchased a standalone policy. Review the travel insurance benefits on your credit card and check that the limits are adequate before foregoing from purchasing a separate plan.

Unpredictability is one of the mind-opening joys of travel, but travel insurance should contain no surprises. The time you spend to understand your options will be well worth the peace of mind as you embark on your next adventure.

Whether you’re seeking a single or a long-term policy, each travel insurance option offers different strengths and weaknesses. Choosing the right policy depends on your trip needs, your budget and how important various benefits are to you.

FIT Travel: All About Independence

fit 2 travel

TripSavvy /  Wenjia Tang

Originally, the acronym "FIT" stood for "foreign independent tour," but now it is most commonly used to describe a fully independent traveler or tourist. You might also see the term "FIT" used to mean "free independent traveler ," "frequent independent traveler," or "foreign independent traveler." All of these definitions share a keyword and concept: independent. These travelers almost always design their own itineraries and arrange their own travel plans—FITs do not travel with group tours or according to any schedule imposed by others.

FITs Shun Group Travel

Tourists who fit the definition of FITs usually travel solo ; in couples; or in small, intimate groups of friends or family. They range anywhere in age from millennials to retirees , but generally, they have above-average incomes that allow for independent travel, which can be more expensive than traveling with an organized group. But what all FITs share, by definition, is a desire to avoid mass tourism in favor of an individualized, independent approach. They tend to want to explore their chosen destinations on their own and at their own pace with an emphasis on enjoying the local food, architecture, history, and culture.

FITs Plan Their Own Trips

The huge rise in availability of all aspects of travel planning online, including even websites devoted to helping you learn how to plan travel , has made it easier for independent travelers to plan their own specialized itineraries and book their own transportation and accommodations. This diminishes their need for traditional travel agents, and this also makes packaged trips have less appeal. As a result, FITs are a quickly growing segment of the tourist market. First-hand travel information about destinations , transportation arrangements such as train and plane tickets , and hotel reservations worldwide are available at the click of a mouse for independent travelers.

FITs Sometimes Use Travel Agents

Although the "I" in FITs means independent, it sometimes could be advantageous to consult with travel professionals who are experienced in providing services to those who want to plan their own trips, especially for more exotic destinations. Doing so does not necessarily mean that independent tourists have to relinquish their, well, independence. As a result of the rise in popularity of independent and solo travel, travel professionals are adjusting their services accordingly. There are now agencies that specialize in customized trips for individuals  and small groups who want to choose their destinations and plan their own itineraries.

The traveling is still independent, but the planning benefits from the professional expertise and inside knowledge of a travel agent . And of course, it takes much less time than searching for all the information you need on your own.

An agent who specializes in FIT travel can help you plan custom sightseeing with a private tour guide, arrange a private cooking class or a wine-tasting tour , and even hook you up with knowledgeable local representatives. The agent will help you plan a personalized travel experience based on the input you provide. If you wish, an agent can often arrange to have someone meet you at your destination and take you to your hotel. Travel professionals are especially helpful in finding non-traditional or out-of-the-way accommodations that do not advertise on the internet, such as villas, farmhouses , inns, and family-run bed-and-breakfasts.
