9 places to make tambay near taft.
Words by Kathlene Masilongan
The Taft area is home to a bunch of big universities with young students, so it isn’t surprising that a bunch of interesting food places and cafes have sprung up in the area. For the sake of the lot of us who don’t go out often, are looking to find a new place to spend hours in, venturing for something new to eat, or for the new kids on the block who are wondering where to hang out during their vacant periods, I asked my fellow Taft-mates where their favorite tambay spots are and here’s what we came up with (in no particular order).
1. Diligence Cafe
(c) Diligence Cafe / Facebook
Location: 1963 Taft Avenue, Malate, Manila City Business Hours: 12:00PM – 7:00AM
Diligence Cafe is the safe haven of thesis writing zombies students. Its entire concept is centered around people coming together to work on their business, whether if it’s your dissertation or just a really tough paper. You can even spend a whole day with them and get access to their internet and showers if you want! Good news, they also have branches in Katipunan and España!
2. Cafe de Valentina
(c) Cafe de Valentina / Facebook
Location: G/F West East Center Bldg., Taft Ave. cor. P. Faura, Manila Business Hours: 9:00AM – 11:00PM
This cozy little cafe is the perfect spot for catching up with your friends and maybe doing some homework. “Maybe” being the operative word. Their quaint aesthetic keep people coming back for more, not to mention the food and coffee you won’t regret ordering.
3. Table Taft
(c) TableTaft / Facebook
Location: 2507, 2nd flr. University Mall, Taft Ave., Malate, Manila Business Hours: 11:00AM – 9:00PM / 10:00PM (Thurs, Fri, Sat)
Tired of studying? Missing a part of your childhood where you’d sit on the floor and destroy people in Monopoly? Well, look no further than TableTaft where you can eat to your heart’s desire and play fun board games at the same time!

Location: Pablo Ocampo St, cor Arellano Ave, San Andres Bukid, Manila Business Hours: 10:00AM – 12:00AM (Mon, Tue) / 3:00AM
The new kid on the block, Arrow Food Park is a food park made up shipping containers. Whatever you’re craving, I’m sure you’ll find it here. Bring a couple of friends and go on a mini (or big) food trip!
5. Midtown Inn & Diner
(c) Midtown Inn & Diner / Facebook
Location: 551 Padre Faura St, 670 Ermita, Manila Business Hours: 7:00AM – 9:00PM
Stepping into the Midtown Diner transports you to another decade. That or Riverdale! With its cool blue booths and pink neon lights, Malate and Ermita friends have made this diner a go-to spot not only for breakfast food but for a quick retro photoshoot too.
(c) Doon / Facebook
Location: 936 Dolores, Malate, Manila Business Hours: 10:00AM – 9:30PM
Up for sitting outside and just letting the hours pass while also enjoying good (and affordable!) Thai food? Doon can give you all of that and more. It’s one of the first and only Thai restaurants in the La Salle area. Sink your teeth into some new dishes at Doon!
(c) Bai / Facebook
Location: 879 Dagonoy St, Malate, Manila Business Hours: 9:30AM – 12:00AM

Not only do they have pastries and cakes, but they also have pastas and some Korean cafe staples too. Oh, and it’s open 24 hours!

Your Local Neighborhood Guide to Taft Avenue
- July 14th, 2016
Taft Avenue is a major thoroughfare that connects to at least two major districts of Manila and two cities (Pasay and Paranaque). Named after then Philippine Governor General William Howard Taft, Taft Avenue is known mainly for being a part of the University Belt, with several of Manila’s major colleges and universities located within the vicinity. This, plus its proximity to major modes of transportation, gives Taft Avenue the youthful vibe and accessibility that has attracted an interesting mix of establishments to the area.
Taft Avenue runs across three cities: Paranaque, Pasay, and Manila. The stretch that passes through Manila is next to iconic communities known for their colorful histories: Malate, Manila’s center of commerce and tourism, and Ermita, Manila’s epicentre for finance, education, and culture.
Moreover, Taft Avenue is a gateway to Makati. As such, Taft Avenue’s accessibility to one of the Philippines’ most significant central business districts makes it an underrated location to buy a home .
Getting Around*
- To LRT Gil Puyat – 5 mins walk
- To University Belt – 30 mins car/LRT
- To MRT/EDSA – 10 mins drive/18 mins LRT
- To Ayala CBD – 25 mins drive/35 mins tram
- To BGC CBD – 30 mins drive
Aside from jeepneys, buses, and shuttle services, two railway systems – MRT-3 and LRT-1 – pass through the area, making Taft Avenue one of the most accessible places in the City of Manila. One can also reach it through major roads like United Nations Avenue, Padre Faura, Pedro Gil, EDSA, and Gil Puyat Avenue.
Why You’ll Love The Place
If you’re a parent with university-aged children, there are a lot of top-tier schools to choose from along Taft Avenue. Among them are De La Salle University, College of St. Benilde, Arellano University, St. Scholastica’s College, University of The Philippines Manila, Philippine Women’s University, and Philippine Normal University.
Because it has a predominantly millennial market, establishments along Taft Avenue offer products and services at allowance-friendly prices. Restaurants for instance, range from street corner carinderias to popular hang-outs like Flaming Wings, Tori Box, Exile on Main St., 8065 Bagnet, Zark’s Burgers, Noel’s BBQ, Noriter Cafe, Rap’s Steak and Cakes, and Ate Rica’s Bacsilogan.
Residential developments in the area also cater to this demographic. Because time is a precious commodity when living in an urban location, a home for sale that’s a stone’s throw away from everything is a property home seekers and real estate investors are readily game to invest on.
Property unit types range from studio units to two-bedroom abodes, which are popular among prospective residents who also want to live near transportation options and closer to school, in a safe and secure development.
The neighborhood isn’t just known for academic pursuits; it nourishes creativity, too. Just an FX ride away are the Cultural Center of the Philippines, National Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Manila, and the hole-in-the-wall art galleries in Malate and Ermita. For slices of the country’s rich history, the Supreme Court of the Philippines, Chinatown, Luneta, Intramuros, and Manila Bay are worth a visit.
The Department of Tourism, Philippine General Hospital, National Bureau of Investigation, and the local office of the World Health Organization are also along Taft Avenue.
People and Lifestyle
With a constant flow of students and prospective residents coming and going, life in Taft Avenue is in a perpetual state of rush and activity. Almost everyone is doing something and is going somewhere at some point. It’s the perfect base for those who thrive in a fast-paced environment where working (and studying) hard and playing hard are the norm.
Students from nearby schools make up a significant portion of the Taft Avenue population. They are on trend and always on the lookout for something new.
Moreover, school loyalty is somewhat a strong driving force for some members of the academe, artists, and intellectuals to make Taft their home away from home.

Thesis, reports, case studies and exams, they just don’t stop piling up, do they? These days, we, students take a breather from all the stress that College throws at us in a lot of ways. One of which, is by gathering the barkada together to take an hour or few away from the stress—to chill and drink. Well, if you’re from Taft Avenue, Here are 8 chillnuman spots you and the barkada can hit up after Finals week.
Local Caven Resto Bar
Address: 2223 Fidel A. Reyes Street Manila, Philippines
Local Bar is known for its indoor vibe, cold ambience, hip hop and r&b music as well as its closed environment. With the tight space, you and your friends are bound to meet anyone on the dance floor. Also, their special 85 pesos’ wine is one of the many drinks that the bar is best known for.
The Chillout Project Kitchen & Bar
Address: Fidel A Reyes Street Taft Manila, Philippines
By the name itself, Chillout is the place to chill. Their cocktails and margaritas will surely get everyone to groove to the beats around the place. The recently-just-mainstreamed bar is also known for its weekly events, both of which are the Monday Karaoke Night and happy hour where you can avail of various drink promos ranging from cocktails, beers and vodka for the whole group.
SaBalcony Taft
Address: Fidel A. Reyes St. Malate, Manila, Philippines
If you feel like drinking a beer and conversing on a rooftop, then Balcony is the place to be. Despite its tight space, Balcony has garnered the liking of many students due to its open air and rooftop vibe along with the grooving beats. What’s a better way to remove the stress than to chill on top of a rooftop?
Meanwhile, another chillnuman place you will spot is just right below SaBalcony called Downtown. Downtown’s famous flavored cocktails and tasting menus will give you and the squad an evening of good drinks, food and conversations.
Address: Unit 208 2nd Floor Sherwood Place, 2264 Taft Avenue, Malate, Manila
Over the past year, Bourn has been one of the favorite places for students to go to in Sherwood. It’s a lay-back type of bar that blasts R&B, hood and the latest music that you and the barkada can vibe with. Not to mention that this bar is known to close the latest around the area. The drinks and food choices also do not disappoint as there are a variety to pick from — But their cocktails are very much recommended.
Exile on Main St. Restaurant
Address: Unit 2 #2428 Leon Guinto St. Barangay 727, Malate, Manila
Exile has always been known as one of the best restaurants around Taft Avenue. Aside from its mouthwatering menu, it’s also a great place to catch up and drink with friends. The restaurant’s side and main dishes make up for good combinations with some booze.
Verano Taft
Address: Sherwood Place, Taft Avenue, Manila
Another place to check out in Sherwood is Verano Taft. Verano is one of the best places to play Beer pong with the group and a place to chill with their variety of ice cold beers. Unlike other bars in Sherwood, Verano is known to be one of the few spacious bars where you and the group can play rounds of beer pong.
Address: 2226 Fidel Reyes St., 01470 Manila
It’s always fun to throw back and reminisce back to those freshman days, and where else better to do that than in Barn? Despite being known as the “tambayan para sa freshman” Barn’s colored cocktails will make way for great reminiscing and conversations. If you want to dine in along with those drinks, their special T-bone steak is not a bad idea as well.
