Texas Mule Deer Hunting

Mule Deer are one of the most sought after trophies and most difficult to obtain species in North America. We have 5 exclusive private ranches secured in Texas encompassing 315,000 acres with some of the best genetics and trophy quality to be found anywhere in the state without exception. We are one of the only commercial operators in Texas that protein feeds our deer year round and offers a consecutive 90 day season with archery or rifle hunts available. We are consistently producing the top desert mule deer in the state entered into the Texas Big Game Awards Program on an annual basis and widely recognized nationwide among mule deer enthusiasts. Desert Safaris has qualified all of our properties for the Texas Managed Lands Deer Permit Program and tags are guaranteed without having to draw or wait years for a permit like most other Western states.

Sonora Mexico Mule Deer Hunting

Our areas are well managed with a very strict program for feed, water and low hunting pressure to hold our deer year round as well to attract big roaming bucks during the rut. Our ranches encompass over 70,000 acres of prime habitat in the Sonoran Desert with the utilization of traditional "high rack" hunting across the thousands of acres of flats in the dense brush. It is not uncommon to see over 50 deer a day with 10 plus being bucks. Our hunts are all inclusive including transportation to and from airport in Hermosillo Sonora Mexico, gun permits, trophy preparation, meals and lodging and 1x1 guide services. We have very clean and comfortable accommodations with a first class chef, very friendly and helpful guides to maximize the most from your hunt. Coues deer and management mule deer may also be added to your hunt on a trophy fee basis. Come and hunt with us in Sonora where hunting dreams turn to reality in the land of giants.

Free Range Aoudad "Barbary" Sheep Hunting

Our 7 large private ranches are located in some of the most rugged and remote mountain ranges in Western Texas (Trans-Pecos region) encompassing over 315,000 acres of prime aoudad "Barbary" sheep habitat.

This unspoiled, vast terrain produces some of the best fair chase aoudad hunting in the lower 48. Come see how and why we are harvesting some of the largest free range sheep in Texas and are the most recognized in the industry. Our clients average 30" rams with nearly 100% success rates. This is one of the most underrated hunts in North America at a fraction of the cost of any other sheep hunt to be found anywhere in the world. Aoudad or Barbary sheep qualify for the Ovis world slam of sheep and represents one of the most gratifying hunting opportunities that Desert Safaris offers to our clients.

New Mexico Pronghorn Antelope Hunting

New Mexico is known for producing some of the best pronghorn in the Western US and is a top end producer for Boone & Crockett caliber bucks. We have secured 3 private ranches (140,000 acres) in the best areas of the state with trophy antelope in the 14" to 16"+ class. Our clients have experienced a 100% success rate annually including multiple record book entries every season. Hunters are not required to apply or draw for a tag since we have secured guaranteed landowner vouchers on our large private ranches. This is a high animal density hunt with great weather during the early fall with frequent spot and stalk opportunities daily on mature bucks. Venture West with us to the "Land of Enchantment" rich in culture and heritage for the Pronghorn Antelope hunt of a lifetime.

Texas Free Range Axis Deer Hunting

Texas boast over 30,000 free ranging axis deer located in the hill country region of the state and we are fortunate to have over 29,000 acres located in the heart of this area. Conditions of hunts include utilization of jeeps and ranch vehicles combined with on foot traverse to locate trophy bucks. June through August is prime time to hunt during the rut and provides a great cure for the off-season blues. We are one of the only outfitters in the Texas that offers this species under 100% fair -chase, free-range hunting opportunities with a 100% success rate on SCI record book bucks.

Texas Exotic Hunting

Desert Safaris offers unlimited hunting opportunities for exotic hunts for species from across the globe including free-range aoudad sheep, free-range axis deer, scimitar- horned oryx, blackbuck antelope, European mouflon sheep, sika deer, fallow deer, buffalo and addax to name a few. These are fun and challenging hunts that offer a variety and year round availability to our clients. Let us host your next hunt in Texas for a record book exotic animal this season.

HJ Ranch is a family owned ranch located in Edwards County, near Rocksprings, Texas. Originally called Double Wells, HJ Ranch comprises 2,600 acres on the border of the Texas Hill Country and Edwards Plateau.

Most of our hunts are from two man box blinds, with plenty of room for hunters and gear, that overlook feeders.  We also offer safari style hunts, spot and stalk and bow hunting. If you are looking for a great place to bring friends or family to enjoy a wonderful, exotic hunting experience, then HJ Ranch is the right choice.

HJ Ranch is a low fence hunting operation surrounded by our family trust ranch. Our whitetail operation has been managed for many years, with a balanced buck/doe ratio to ensure we maintain a healthy heard. Hunters will have the opportunity to look at several options before making their final decision.

Before our hunters go out into the field, we take time to make sure you have shot your rifle and it is ready for the “shot of a lifetime”.  We also display a map of the ranch in our lodge that identifies the location all of our blinds, helping you better understand the terrain you are hunting.

Texas Deer Hunting

Trophy Whitetail Buck

The ranch practices good management practices by hunting only mature trophy Whitetail and Exotic Deer and feeding the best nutritional feed. Offering the best genetics and many food plots to give our deer the best opportunity to grow big racks. The deer on the ranch are free ranging deer that are wild and do not have ear tags or tattoos like most pen raised ranches. Most days our hunters will see in excess of 100 whitetails bucks and 100-200 exotic deer in one day. You will think you are on the African savannah after your first morning driving.

Shonto Ranches Whitetail Hunting season starts September 27, 2014 and goes all the way to February 28, 2015. Because of this special permit from the State of Texas, it allows us to start 1 month earlier and end 2 months later to achieve our management goals. The great thing to a deer hunter is you never have to use your tags on your hunting license. We the land owner use our special issued Managed Land Deer (MLD) tags, preserving your tags.

Texas Fishing

Rainbow Trout Fishing in Texas Hill Country

We specialize in Largemouth Bass fishing year round and Rainbow Trout fishing in the fall and spring. WE ARE ONE OF THE ONLY Texas fishing ranches in the state to stock Rainbow Trout up to the 10 pound mark. You can actually fish Rainbow Trout in Texas with your fly rod or any conventional spinning rod.

Many Texas fishing related state records have been produced from our prime fishing streams and lakes. Our lakes and streams are generally very clear and blue colored and allow our fishing guest to sight cast and present or place that perfect fly with in striking distance of that monster Rainbow Trout or Largemouth Bass.

We allow our fishing guest to bring Canoes, Kayaks and float tubes but they are not needed. Most fishing is done from well groomed banks and most have very good Fly fishing areas for your back cast with out obstructions. Fishing can also be done with spin cast rods and produces good results.

Fishing is complimentary to our hunting guests.

Camera Safaris

Non hunting and fishing guests can still enjoy the scenery the ranch has to offer by taking a camera safari through Shonto Ranch, stopping at various lakes and ridge-lines for picture-taking opportunities. This is perfect for the naturalist or casual nature lover. Read more about our camera safari tours in our Camera Safari Section.

Texas Exotic Hunts Are Dangerously Unregulated

Some hunting ranches in Texas routinely offer hunts of endangered or threatened exotic species. This should not be allowed.

by Amber Gobell

April 25, 2024, 8:00 AM, CDT

Addax antelope for $8,000, scimitar-horned oryx for $7,500—both endangered species advertised as available to hunt at a private game reserve in Texas as of April 2024. The scimitar-horned oryx , a species declared “Extinct in the Wild” 24 years ago, was reintroduced into Chad’s Ouadi Achim Faunal Reserve in February 2023 thanks to conservation breeding programs but is still listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).  Another species currently listed as “Extinct in the Wild” (the Pére David’s deer , originally native to China) is also available to hunt, according to information posted online by Greystone Castle Sporting Club in Mingus.

Greystone Castle, an hour and a half drive west of Dallas, describes their resort online as the “premier luxury hunting lodge in Texas.” In April 2024, its website offered fully guided tour packages, premier accommodations, and “exotic hunts”; however, its descriptions of 30 available species did not disclose that several are facing declining populations and extinction threats in the wild.  At least two—the Addax antelope and the scimitar-horned oryx—remain on the IUCN’s Red List of Threatened Species. A spokesman for the ranch did not respond to a phone call and subsequent email requests for comment for this article.

The Endangered Species Act (ESA) requires protection of endangered and threatened species regardless of the species’ country of origin, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS). Federal law prohibits actions that may further the decline of IUCN-listed species .

Despite ESA protections, trophy hunting ranches can legally offer opportunities to shoot and kill threatened or endangered species, thanks to a loophole in federal law (created by U.S. Representative John Carter, a Texas lawmaker) that exempts certain animals popular on hunting ranches, Jennifer Best, the wildlife program director of the nonprofit Friends of Animals told the Texas Observer . The nonprofit more recently submitted a rulemaking petition that urges the FWS to close the loophole, but that remains pending, Best said.

More than 1,000 captive trophy-hunting ranches operate in the United States, most of them in Texas. The FWS makes no effort to track the number of threatened and endangered exotic animals hunted on those ranches. An industry estimate published in the 2010s approximated over 11,000 scimitar-horned oryxes, 5,000 addaxes, and 800 dama gazelles, as well as thousands of other threatened and endangered animals. Many exotics offered to hunters were born and raised on the same Texas ranches, prompting Lauren Loney for the Humane Society of the United States to tell Texas Monthly in 2021: “Captive hunting is an egregious form of animal cruelty. The line between wild animal and livestock is very much blurred here”.

In 2020, the Observer reported that some endangered species are now more common in their Texas enclaves than in their native lands. Decades ago, another private ranch participated in sending some animals back to their home country in an attempt to establish breeding populations; however, this specific circumstance does not excuse unregulated exotic hunting of imperiled species.

For some fans of unique hunting opportunities, pursuing rare species is an achievement on their “bucket list.” In contrast, for many traditional hunters, participating in the eradication of a threatened or endangered species violates established ethical hunting practices.

Texas has a longstanding history of hunting, cultivating a culture of recreational competition. Conservation and preservation of wildlife in the Lone Star state is funded by hunting, fishing, and weapon equipment sales. According to the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD), 100 percent of hunting and fishing license fees and Pittman-Robertson Wildlife Restoration allocations provide funding for conservation efforts. Participation in Texas exotic hunts requires either a standard resident or nonresident special hunting license . Although hunting licenses and equipment purchases provide funding for wildlife conservation, private sporting clubs receive tremendous profits outside of federal and state systems that do not recirculate to wildlife conservation. Private landowners control 94 percent of statewide land, resulting in limitations on officials’ ability to protect wildlife habitat.

Under Texas law, it is illegal to hunt what are considered “dangerous” exotic animals, such as lions, tigers, and elephants. Outside of those few exceptions, state law does not prohibit the killing of other exotic animals, even for some threatened or endangered in their home countries.

According to TPWD , “On private property, there are no required means and methods of take, state bag or possession limits, or closed seasons (hunting hours) on exotic animals or exotic fowl.” Although a hunting license and landowner permission is required to hunt exotics, lenient regulations create gray areas that transgress federal protections of foreign species.

Private game reserves in the United States should adhere to the protections afforded to domestic endangered species or at the very least, be required to advise hunters about which species are threatened or endangered. To avoid impairing the extensive efforts of wildlife biologists, conservationists, and other professionals working to help secure the fate of these species, individuals should hunt with discretion, and consider the conservation status of each species.

Hunting bans and legal protections in the United States,  Kenya, and Ethiopia for the endangered Grevy’s Zebra have allowed for recent population increases, offering support for collaborative efforts to safeguard endangered species. Hunting sustainably, ethically, and legally is how sport hunting should operate. To effectuate conservation-friendly exotic hunting in the United States, exotic hunting for nonthreatened species can continue; however, policies regulating privately owned threatened game species should be issued. The sooner protections for endangered exotics go into effect, the stronger the possibility the species can recover. Hunting ranches in Texas or elsewhere in the United States should simply not offer the opportunity to kill endangered or threatened species. Following a hunting ban for all affected species on private property, private owners could seek compensation by selling IUCN Red Listed exotics to captive breeding recovery programs that are legally permitted to propagate endangered species.

National Wildlife Refuge System in Texas Grows by More Than 9,000 Acres

San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge

Recent acquisitions by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service have added more than 9,000 acres to the public lands managed by the National Wildlife Refuge System in Texas. From Columbia bottomlands on the Gulf Coast to grasslands in Central Texas and coastal prairie in the Rio Grande Valley, these newly acquired properties aim to protect habitat for a diversity of wildlife and benefit the public for generations to come.

“Texas is one of the most biodiverse states in the U.S. with tens of thousands of native animal and plant species inhabiting hundreds of different habitat types,” Amy Lueders, the Service’s Southwest Regional Director. “Each of our Texas National Wildlife Refuges were established to help safeguard this biodiversity, with a focus on protecting habitat for migratory birds along with listed and at-risk species. Many of them are also places for people to enjoy nature and the outdoors. We are extremely grateful for the partners who assisted with ensuring these properties are protected in perpetuity for the benefit of both wildlife and the public.”

Forested Wetland on San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge

At San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge on the Gulf Coast, the Service acquired more than 5,635 acres of prime Columbia bottomlands habitat for the benefit of neotropical migratory birds, waterfowl and resident wildlife. San Bernard is home to some of the only forested wetlands adjacent to the Gulf of Mexico. The newly acquired property contains thousands of acres of wetland forest and cleared land that will be restored to wetland forest, marsh, stream and lake habitat.

Bottomland Hardwood Forest Neches River National Wildlife Refuge

At Neches River National Wildlife Refuge in East Texas, the Service acquired more than 3,000 acres of prime habitat for wintering and nesting migratory birds in the area’s ecologically valuable bottomland hardwood forests. Once covering nearly thirty million acres across the Southeastern United States, today, only a small percentage of original bottomland hardwood forests remain. In addition to sustaining a diversity of wildlife, fish and plants, the newest additions to the refuge provide recreational and riverfront access opportunities for hikers, bird watchers, paddlers, and hunters.

Grassland Habitat Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge

At Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge in Central Texas, the Service acquired 441 acres of priority nesting habitat for grassland birds and the black-capped vireo. This addition helps establish a connection between disjunct refuge tracts, creating a 5,000-acre contiguous block of important migratory and songbird habitat, including for the endangered golden-cheeked warbler. This tract also contains unique karst sinkholes, springs, and intermittent stream habitats and supports numerous species of resident birds and other wildlife, such as reptiles, amphibians, and mammals.

Brackish Marshland Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge

At Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge on the Gulf Coast, the Service acquired more than 191 acres of diverse habitat consisting of brackish marshlands and coastal prairie. Anahuac protects some of the most significant coastal marshlands in Texas. Features on the newly acquired tract include Lone Oak Bayou, which runs down the middle of the property, and the largest oak mott now protected by the refuge, where thousands of neotropical migrants find their first land after crossing the Gulf of Mexico. Wildlife found on the newly acquired tract includes mottled ducks, herons, egrets, marsh birds and other species that live in coastal grasslands.

Native Brush Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge

At Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge in South Texas, the Service acquired more than 57 acres of water features and native brush within and adjacent to Tiocano Lake and along the natural floodplain of the Rio Grande. Native wildlife species that will benefit from this acquisition include a variety of mammals, reptiles and amphibians. The properties also provide habitat for migratory and wintering birds and other unique Rio Grande Valley birdlife including chachalacas, green jays, great kiskadees, black-bellied whistling ducks, golden-fronted woodpeckers, roseate spoonbills, wood storks, caracaras, a variety of doves, kingbirds, hummingbirds, owls, and several species of hawks and falcons.

Bottomland Hardwood Floodplain Forest Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge

At Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge in Southeast Texas, the Service acquired more than 42 acres of bottomland hardwood floodplain forest, which features a branching bayou system, depressional wetlands, and hardwood timber. The acquisition of this property benefits fish and wildlife habitats of the lower Trinity River floodplain by filling in a gap of a much larger tract of refuge land. Larger tracts of protected land provide benefits to a broader suite of wildlife species, especially those that require more extensive home ranges.

Coastal Prairie Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge

At Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge in South Texas, the Service acquired 10 acres adjacent to existing refuge lands in Cameron County. The entire tract consists of coastal wetland and prairie and hosts native vegetation such as sea-oxeye daisy and gulf cordgrass. Wildlife documented on or near the property include yellow-headed blackbird, horned lark, mockingbird, red-tailed hawk, Harris’ hawk, northern harrier and long-billed curlew, and evidence of raccoon, coyote, and deer.

These acquisitions were made possible with the help of numerous non-profit conservation partners, including The Conservation Fund, Friends of Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.

The National Wildlife Refuge System grows through the conservation of fee-title and easement acquisitions from willing sellers within approved acquisition boundaries. To purchase the acquisitions, the Service uses Migratory Bird Conservation Funds, which are generated from the sale of federal Duck Stamps and import duties on arms and ammunition, and Land and Water Conservation Funds, which fulfill a bipartisan commitment to safeguard America’s natural areas and provide public outdoor recreation opportunities for all Americans.

Across the U.S., the National Wildlife Refuge System is an unparalleled network of 571 national wildlife refuges, 38 wetland management districts and 5 marine national monuments. A national wildlife refuge national wildlife refuge A national wildlife refuge is typically a contiguous area of land and water managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service  for the conservation and, where appropriate, restoration of fish, wildlife and plant resources and their habitats for the benefit of present and future generations of Americans. Learn more about national wildlife refuge is within an hour’s drive of most major metropolitan areas. More than 67 million Americans visit refuges every year. Refuges provide vital habitat for thousands of species and access to world-class recreation, from fishing, hunting and boating to nature watching, photography and environmental education. This recreation on national wildlife refuges supports regional economies to the tune of $3.2 billion dollars per year and supports more than 41,000 jobs.

Another hunt, another weekend when Hill Country spring turkeys win again | Leggett

This young gobbler seems to be trying to hide behind a single blade of grass at Camp Verde Ranch. Gobbling has pretty much shut down in the Hill Country for spring turkey hunting.

CAMP VERDE — Killis LaGrone was 30 yards away, across a cattle guard, tiptoeing toward a clump of juniper that stuck out into the road. That’s where he was headed because I had done something I knew wasn’t smart and that no good would come from it.

It was the final morning of a spring turkey hunt, and I really wanted Killis to get a turkey. It had been close on to 40 years since I called up a turkey for him on the South Fork Ranch west of Kerrville.

“That’s the last turkey I killed,” he’d told me over beers the night before.

Killis grew up in Deadwood in deep East Texas, and there were no turkeys there in those days. I had gotten him to come down from Panola County, where he still lives, thinking in my dull brain that early to mid-April would be the perfect time for gobblers to be running to a call on Camp Verde Ranch.

Years ago, a friend and I had spent enough Aprils hunting turkeys down there to determine that April 20 was the perfect time to start our hunt. That worked well for two decades, but somewhere in there the turkeys changed what they were doing.

Mid-April became the best time for peak gobbling, and I had learned that during the last two seasons while hunting there with Maurice Estlinbaum. Maurice, still going hard at 83, had actually killed two random turkeys in 2023, but there wasn’t much gobbling. By the time we arrived at the ranch, hens were bred and the gobblers had shut down.

A slow start to a slow weekend for gobblers

There were very few gobbles on the roost, and we weren’t hearing anything after 7 a.m. Killis and I tried setting up before daylight close to a roost down along Verde Creek. We had seen three mature gobblers heading down that way just before dark the afternoon before and were kind of stunned that the gobbling quit as soon the first bird hit the ground.

We tried walking the roads, listening and calling, to find a gobbler to hunt. Maurice set up in a horse trap near the house and killed a gobbler the second afternoon. The bird came to the call off a large mountain to the west. By sheer determination Maurice managed to find another gobbler the very next morning.

Out of desperation, I made a loop off through the ranch and to the fence separating that trap from the rest of the ranch. We had turkeys calling and answering our calls from daylight the next day.

Two gobblers came down through a thick stand of junipers to a spot they figured was good for them to attract a hen. We could see them through the brush where we were hiding, but they refused to close the 75 yards between us. They strutted and gobbled for a long time but would not come on in — a sure sign that those gobblers were done for the season.

Needing a change in strategy

After half an hour, I gave up on moving them close and suggested that Killis sneak up the road to a point where he could step around the junipers and whack one of the gobblers as he strutted in the road. In the background, I could hear gobblers answering every yelp I made. He was coming kind of fast, and I didn’t pick up on what was happening.

Finally, I realized the gobbler behind me was coming right to us and had been for 10 minutes. I tried to hiss a message to Killis, but it turned out to be too late. My fuzzy brain could not connect the dots from us to the fast-closing gobbler.

Finally I stood and tried to get Killis’ attention, but to no avail. I knew by the sound that the gobbler to the south of us was close, and I turned to check him out. He was just stepping out from behind a clump of brush, and we locked eyes across 75 yards of open ground.

I didn’t even carry a shotgun that morning, and it was a classic case of trying to pretend that we didn’t see each other. I dropped to a knee while the one gobbler that had come to the call all week turned his head and disappeared back behind the brush.

Killis finally turned back toward me, and I signaled him to return. He made it as the close gobbler crossed through a fence and went invisible. He never called again, either.

I always say that I don’t want to turkey hunt with anybody who’s not smarter than a turkey, but I realize I’d been doing that already for many years. Only the pea brain in this case was little old me.

Killis went home without a turkey and promised we would come back in a year, but in early April. If we’re still alive, of course.

Texas African Game Hunts

Bongo hunts.

Bongo are among Africa’s most prized trophies. Today, bongo hunting in Africa takes place in the rain forests of the Central African Republic, Cameroon, and Congo.

They prefer the dense rain forests and are extremely shy, cautious animals. Originally bongo was also common in the mountains of East Africa. Actor William Holden imported them from his ranch on Mount Kenya. Our population of bongo number over 40, making it one of the larger herds outside of Africa. We release approximately 6 bulls each year from our breeding areas. These bulls are extremely shy and prefer to move and feed at night. Bulls will weigh 750 pounds or more. Bongo will stay in the thickest brush during the day and use the cover of night to protect themselves when they come out to feed. Trophy bulls are over 27”.

Our hunting styles vary as to method of take and time of year. Most of our guides are not only experienced hunting locally but have international hunting experience as well. We primarily hunt safari style, glassing hill sides and valleys. When they are deep in the brush, we will stalk ridges and glass. For bow hunters, it is usually a matter of sitting in our world class blinds and patience. We limit our hunting, only taking a few mature bulls per year. We are not going to hunt a bull until he has reached his maximum size. Because of our management and breeding success, Star S Ranch has record class trophy hunting.

You will be staying in our 7,000-foot Waterfall Lodge which was completed in the summer of 2014. The main lodge includes 32-foot ceilings with black walnut walls covered with trophies from around the world. A granite bar top and service area is perfect for relaxing and telling hunting stories. The back porch overlooks a water hole where it is not uncommon to see Sable Antelope, Kudu, Axis Deer, and Whitetail Deer drinking water. There are 4 casitas, each with two rooms which has three queen sized beds and an on-suite bathroom. One room, the lodge and surroundings are wheel chair accessible so all can enjoy the facilities and outdoors. Additionally, you can fly your plane into our 5,000-foot paved Star S Airport which is located in the middle of the ranch.

At Star S Ranch, you will find all the amenities needed for a Corporate Retreat, built around the wildlife and hunting loved by the avid hunter.
