35 Cool Things to Do in Fort Lauderdale

35 Cool Things to Do in Fort Lauderdale

Having lived 90 minutes from Fort Lauderdale for nearly ten years, I never tired of visiting Fort Lauderdale, a beautiful Atlantic Coast city with some of the most fabulous beaches in Florida. Here are 35 awesome things to do in Fort Lauderdale on your travels.

Fort Lauderdale is 45 minutes north of Miami in South Florida (you’ll pass the Hard Rock’s Guitar Hotel) and three hours southeast of Orlando. Its landscape is filled with flirty yachts along the Intracoastal Waterway and inviting sandy beaches by the sea.

Explore Fort Lauderdale Like a Local

Some fun things I like to do in Fort Lauderdale include shopping at Sawgrass Mills, sightseeing through Hollywood and its incredible mural scene, taking an airboat ride through the world-famous protected Everglades, and seeing Broadway shows at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

Of course, the concert scene and hockey games at FLA Live Arena are primo, too.

Shop Sawgrass Mills

The mammoth  Sawgrass Mills  outlet shopping complex features 350+ stores in Sunrise, Florida, about 20 minutes from Fort Lauderdale. You will have great stores to choose from and miles to walk around this enticing property.

You may recognize a few store names: Frette, Burberry, David Yurman, and Rag & Bone. Sawgrass Mills is one of the busiest tourist destinations in Florida. Be prepared for the mall shoppers with their suitcases dragging behind them that they use to fill with their purchases. You can also eat at one of nearly 50 Sawgrass Mills restaurants, including Cheesecake Factory, Grand Lux Cafe, and Johnny Rockets.

Fun Fact: Sawgrass Mill is the largest outlet shopping destination in the country.

Don’t be surprised when you see families pulling suitcases behind them. The “in” thing here is to buy a bag at the mall and fill it up with bargains and great buys to ship home with you.

See the Hollywood Murals

Hollywood, Florida, was often considered a part of Fort Lauderdale; however, lately, it has become a destination in its own right due to the beautiful beaches and fantastic arts scene. Hollywood has a great art community, with offerings ranging from galleries and museums to jaw-dropping murals.

hollywood-florida-art-museum

Many of the best murals are the Downtown Hollywood Mural Project, a curated collection done by local, national, or internationally known muralists. A couple of my favorites are the Frida mural by Fabio Onrack,  Hollywood by the Sea  by Yuhmi Collective, and flamingos (1948 Harrison Street ) by Key Detail.

Take an Airboat Ride Through the Everglades

There are several places to experience the one-of-a-kind Florida Everglades, but I prefer  Sawgrass Recreation Area . Here, you will take a thrilling airboat ride through the magical landscape with gators inches from your boat.

The photo-ops are amazing, and the guided tour explaining and showcasing the Everglade’s important ecosystem is fascinating. You might also see turtles, birds, snakes, and crocodiles.

airboat-ride-in-everglades

The attraction has several reptiles and a small zoo. Ear protection is provided.

Did You Know? You can also take a nighttime airboat ride for a much different Everglades experience.

Attend a Performance at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts

When I moved to Florida, I thought I would suffer being so far from NYC’s Broadway scene. Little did I know that nearby was one of the most spectacular state-of-the-art theaters in the world. The  Broward Center for the Performing Arts  is swanky, high-class, and high-energy. It has a bounty of performances—700+ per year.

Broward’s architecture and decor are beautiful—perfect for immersing you in a memorable theater experience with plays, dances, operas, lectures, concerts, ballets, and Broadway musicals.

Catch a Concert or Panthers Hockey Game at FLA Live Arena

As someone who has been to hundreds of concerts and professional sporting events, I would rank seeing a concert or catching a hockey game here as one of the best in the country. The  FLA Live Arena  (formerly the BB&T Center) is home to the Florida Panthers, one of the best and most admired sports teams.

The concert and performance scene is off the hook at this world-class Sunrise facility just west of Fort Lauderdale.

Experience Las Olas Boulevard

Look for high-end shopping around nearly every corner in Fort Lauderdale, with an arsenal of boutiques and trendy shops. Las Olas Boulevard is where you’ll find an entertainment enclave, ranging from locally owned shops to some of the most fascinating antique shops you’ve ever seen.

Eat Like A Local at The Floridian

The locals adore dining for breakfast, lunch, or dinner at  The Floridian Restaurant . It isn’t fancy like a large portion of Fort Lauderdale eateries, but the hearty food portions are plentiful. There’s a reason TV chefs like Rachael Ray endorse it.

My go-to order at The Floridian is the 222 Special: two eggs, two pancakes (or toast), sausage or bacon, coffee, and small juice for under $10. That’s a great deal, especially in this ritzy zip code.

Drink Margaritas at Rocco’s Tacos

We go to Las Olas Boulevard for people-watching and to have margaritas and tacos from  Rocco’s Tacos . Don’t stop there; the famous guacamole (made and served tableside), Austin queso, and sizzling molcajete bowls are other great choices at South Florida’s favorite local Mexican/Tex-Mex chain restaurant.

Rocco’s Tacos has eight locations around Florida.

roccos-tacos-chicken-fajita-and-cheese-dip

Get Caffeinated at Ann’s Florist and Coffee Bar

Born in the 1970s, you won’t want to miss grabbing an espresso or glass of wine at  Ann’s Florist and Coffee Bar  on Las Olas Boulevard. Yes, they are a flower shop, too, but much of the traffic is there for a delicious coffee, a glass of vino, or a bottle of bubbly from the champagne vending machine.

Don’t miss the Instagram-worthy neon and flowers wall.

shopping-at-las-olas-boulevard

Soak Up the Nightlife

Fort Lauderdale has an excellent food and beverage scene and vibrant nightlife. Some of the hotspots for after-dark socializing and adult libations are  Hunter’s  (an energetic vibe and mainly gay clientele, Culture Room (standing room only for excellent musical acts), and Backyard (primarily collegiate crowd and killer DJs).

Take a Water Taxi Ride

Kids especially will love taking a water taxi ride. My favorite address for the water taxi is GiGi’s in Hollywood’s Sycamore District, with a waterfront patio overlooking the Intracoastal and killer key lime pie. It’s a perfect place for having a meal, celebrating a special occasion, drinking a cocktail, or visiting with friends.

key-lime-pie-ggs-waterfront

Family Friendly Fort Lauderdale

Family-friendly activities range from exploring the Museum of Discovery and Science, Flippo’s Fort Lauderdale, and snapping photos at Butterfly World, a wondrous botanical garden with dozens of butterfly species.

A sit-down experience would be to take a break in an air-conditioned setting at the AutoNation IMAX 3D Theater.

Swimming Hall of Fame

Learn about the world’s swimming history at the unique International Swimming Hall of Fame ( ISHOF ). The museum’s hall-of-fame shares memorable moments in swimming history, civil rights, and a look at swimwear through the years. It also covers synchronized swimming, water polo, diving, pictures of the RMS Titanic on the ocean floor, and much more.

swimming-hall-of-fame-swimsuit-display

Wander the Museum of Discovery and Science

Be prepared to spend hours at the  Museum of Discovery and Science , an educational facility visited by half a million people annually. The museum features temporary and permanent exhibits. Several displays will teach your children about Florida’s ecoscapes and natural resources while making it fun.

The Go Green! is my favorite part of the museum, explaining the importance of the three R’s: reduce, recycle, and reuse. The Storm Center, outdoor Science Park, and Dino Dana Adventures are other areas the little ones will love.

Don’t miss the North American river otters. Check out the daily programming for special events and activities: I held my first snake here.

florida-museum-of-discovery

Play at Flippo’s Fort Lauderdale

Flippo’s  is a spot guaranteed to capture the interest of your kids. Flippo’s Fort Lauderdale is a family entertainment spot loaded with fun slides, a laser maze, games, climbing structures, and sports courts. However, Ball Blaster may become their favorite space and activity. There is also an onsite snack bar for snacks and drinks, plus a separate toddler area for ages three and under.

$17.99 will get you a day’s admission for kids, but adults are always free.

Awe Over the Murals at FATVillage Arts

One of the lesser-known points of interest in Fort Lauderdale is the  FATVillage Arts District . This extraordinary art offering in the warehouse district has eclectic murals and is super cool.

Come for the monthly art walk featuring open galleries, yummy foods, local artwork, and music on the last Saturday of the month.

fat-village-art-district

Learn About South Florida’s Ecosystem

Kayak around South Florida’s mangroves for another enticing activity. It is a great way to learn about Florida’s incredible ecosystem. Besides the educational aspect, you will be amazed by the importance of protecting and preserving this dynamic habitat for fish, insects, reptiles, algae, mollusks, and crustaceans.

Glimpse the Beauty at Butterfly World

Where can you see 20,000 butterflies in a natural environment? Butterfly World in Tradewinds Park, that’s where. Kids and adults alike will enjoy this one-of-a-kind attraction that will bring a smile to your face via the six screened aviaries filled with tropical birds and gorgeous butterflies. You can also hand-feed small parrots at the Lorikeet Encounter .

Butterfly World is 100% wheelchair accessible and has wheelchairs on a first-come, first-served basis for $5 plus tax for up to two hours.

Head Out to Fort Lauderdale’s Beaches

Schedule time to enjoy Fort Lauderdale’s incredible beaches, with 24 miles of golden sandy shores. Here, you can relax, unwind, practice, and perfect your snorkeling and paddle boarding skills.

Bring a book, nap, or watch the tide roll in and out as you encounter the Florida sunshine and stunning scenery.

Get Underwater Snorkeling or Diving

There are several tour groups you can schedule a snorkeling or diving adventure within Fort Lauderdale. One of the choices is  American Dream Dive Charters , an adventure company offering affordable scuba excursions in the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Marina day and night.

For a unique snorkeling adventure, head to the SS Copenhagen shipwreck, a popular place for snorkeling and scuba diving.

Eat Uber Fresh Seafood at 15th Street Fisheries

The landmark  15th Street Fisheries  at the Lauderdale Marina on the Intracoastal Waterway is an iconic address for excellent seafood and the South Florida vibe.

Enjoy fish tacos, smoked fish dip, live music, and a setting of boaters, fishermen, and high-dollar yachts, complete with a vast list of cold beer and cocktails. I prefer dining dockside, but there are options.

Picture 15th Street Fisheries as the idea behind every Jimmy Buffet lyric.

Segway Fort Lauderdale

Segway Fort Lauderdale  owner Jon is sure to make your visit and Segway adventure in Fort Lauderdale memorable and entertaining. I took one of his tours a few years ago and saw some incredible things.

My tour was the Hollywood Beach Tour, which goes 4.5 miles through the Broadwalk, historical backstreets, and even stops for ice cream on the beach. It was super fun! This tour, with instruction included, currently runs $59 per person and lasts an hour. Longer Segway adventures are available.

Be Entertained at the Riverwalk

One of Fort Lauderdale’s most intriguing places is the Riverwalk, “Venice of America,” a lovely mile-long area with ten parks on the tropical banks of the New River. Riverwalk is dotted with museums, shops, 911 monument, and restaurants, plus it gathers a great crowd.

Besides this, you can also sign up for an activity, such as bike and Segway tours, kayak and paddle board rentals, yoga, photography, and dog training classes.

segway-fort-lauderdale

The Riverwalk is where you’ll find the historic gem of Fort Lauderdale—Stranahan House Museum. There are also exercise stations for use by the general public in the area.

Visit the Awesome Hollywood Beach Broadwalk

Hollywood also has excellent beaches and is home to the ever-popular Broadwalk. Here, you can stroll on a wide pedestrian walkway with shops and restaurants on one side and the lovely Atlantic Ocean on the other.

hollywood-broadwalk

Bike rentals and all sorts of other fun things (i.e., tandem bikes, scooters, etc.) are available through  Sun & Fun Cycles  for seeing a more significant portion of the Broadwalk and getting in some exercise. It is also worth noting that Sun & Fun offers electric scooters, wheelchairs, and JOB (Joy on the Beach).

This innovative wheelchair can roll onto a sandy beach and even into the ocean.

Three other things I recommend to do along the Broadwalk are to sample the conch fritters at Ocean Alley Restaurant and Beach Bar, have a dip of ice cream at Surf N Spray, and watch the brave souls on the FlowRider surfing simulator at the  Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort .

margaritaville-fort-lauderdale

Take in the Dania Beach Pier Photo Ops

For the best photo ops, head to Dania Beach Pier; it is one of the most Instagram-worthy natural settings in the Fort Lauderdale area. The wooden pier is 900 feet long, offers primo fishing, and costs $1.50 to access.

Dania Beach is an award-winning Blue Wave Beach, a prestigious clean beach certification.

Enjoy the Outdoors at Hugh Taylor Birch State Park

A walk, hike, or bike ride around  Hugh Taylor Birch State Park  might be something you will want to consider when visiting Fort Lauderdale. It is a fantastic place to explore, have a picnic, and you may even glimpse an alligator and see where the locals go. In-line skating and bicycling are other popular draws.

The state park is described as a “tropical area with diverse wildlife.” Admission is $6 per vehicle; hours are 8 AM to sunset daily.

Explore Fort Lauderdale’s Art Galleries

Spend more time learning about Fort Lauderdale’s growing art scene by popping in some of the stunning art galleries throughout town, including the Seldom Seen Gallery, National Geographic Fine ArtGalleries, Gallery Mavruk, and MAC Fine Art.

Take a Peek at the Charming Lauderdale-By-The-Sea

This darling 1.5-mile seaside area is located between the Intracoastal and the Atlantic Ocean on Florida’s Gold Coast, north of Fort Lauderdale. It is known as Florida’s “Beach Diving Capital.” Besides hotels and restaurants, you’ll also find Anglin’s Square, great for shopping, and Adirondack chairs and boat benches for people watching or admiring the ocean.

The beach in this area, 100 yards away, has a natural coral reef system.

Take a Day Trip

If you are considering a day trip from Fort Lauderdale, I’m always suggestive of the Palm Beaches to the north. Take time to explore the Northwood Village in West Palm and grab a bite, explore the West Palm Beach GreenMarket and Clematis Street, and tour Whitehall, the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum in Palm Beach.

whitehall-flagler-museum

Gamble at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino

Choose between overnights, gambling, an elaborate nightlife scene, concerts, and one of the best cocktail lounges in South Florida at the  Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino . Better known as “The Guitar Hotel,” the Seminole HRH is a fun-filled place with high energy and lots of things going on…all the time.

With 3100 slot machines, video poker and roulette, plus nearly 200 table games with live dealers (three-card poker, Texas Hold ’em, blackjack, and more), the Hard Rock is Florida’s premier entertainment and gaming destination.

hard-rock-guitar-hotel-florida

Eat a Decadent Dessert at Boatyard

The Boatyard  at the marina is a fabulous place for dinner or celebrating a special occasion, but it’s also a terrific stop for just a gourmet dessert. Years ago, I had Peanut Butter & Jelly, a peanut butter mousse with a graham crust, raspberry jam, and vanilla ice cream. It still ranks as one of the best desserts I’ve ever eaten.

Today, the S’mores dessert is calling my name.

Learn About Nature

You can learn more about nature and Florida native plants, birds, animals, and flowers at the Bonnet House Museum & Gardens, Flamingo Gardens, and the Anne Kolb Nature Center, which my Vero Beach Garden Club visited annually.

anne-kolb-naturę-center

Explore the Bonnet House Museum & Gardens

The  Bonnet House Museum and Gardens , a historical offering with substantial botanical gardens, sits on 80 pristine acres. My favorite part of this point of interest is the fragrant and picture-perfect orchids collection. Make sure to save time for a house tour, too, with lovely artwork, attractive furnishings, and stunning marble.

Admission to the gardens only will cost you $10, $25 for the self-guided house tour (plus gardens), or $30 for a docent-led tour. Don’t miss the cute gift shop.

lily-pads-at-bonnet-house-gardens

Have Fun at Flamingo Gardens

You may be surprised that  Flamingo Gardens  is not just a place to see flamingos. This 60-acre property is home to the Everglades Learning Center, Wray Home Museum, and South Florida Wildlife and Botanical Sanctuary, with a free-flight aviary that is home to 250 birds.

There is a separate Birds of Prey exhibit housing owls, vultures, hawks, eagles, and falcons. Though the flamingos are graceful and lovely, I prefer the cute river otter habitat.

Flamingo Gardens’ botanical garden has cycads, pollinators, a live oak hammock, tropical ferns, heliconias, orchids, butterflies, Champion trees, and much more. Hours are 9:30 AM to 5 PM daily, and online tickets run $19.95 for adults and $14.95 for kids aged 3 to 11.

Get Educated at the Anne Kolb Nature Center

You will probably learn more about Florida’s diverse agritourism and ecosystems at the 1500-acre Anne Kolb Nature Center than anywhere else in the state. This unique attraction, a place for education and hiking, contains coastal mangrove wetlands, plus walking and paddling trails amidst the natural setting.

I found the staff super friendly and eager to show off their aquarium finds and the great observation tower overlooking the urban park.

Relax and Unwind at the Marriott Pompano Beach

Accommodations are primo in Fort Lauderdale, with choices ranging from hotels and motels to luxury guest houses and Airbnb properties. I really like staying at the Fort Lauderdale  Marriott Pompano Beach Resort & Spa , off the beaten path and away from some of the Fort Lauderdale traffic.

The oceanfront Marriott Pompano Beach has incredible beach views and beach-chic rooms. Overnight stays are typically less than $200 a night, an absolute steal in South Florida.

Unfortunately, pets are not allowed at this hotel.

Please Your Palate With Latin Dishes from Chimney House

In the heart of downtown Fort Lauderdale, you’ll find  Chimney House Grill and Cafe . This trendy circa-1924 eatery does Latin-fusion dishes with a twist and has amazing menu creations. Sit indoors in the homey, cozy house or outdoors in the cute courtyard.

For me, the standing order is the Ropa Vieja (Cuban-style beef with rice, black beans, and sweet plantains), with a glass (or pitcher) of house-made sangria. Chimney House also serves brunch beginning at 11 AM.

Jot Down a Future To-Do List

I keep a “to-do” list of the things I want to do on my travels. I haven’t yet done two things in Fort Lauderdale, but they are on my list: take a  Jungle Queen Riverboat  cruise and visit the Historic Stranahan House Museum.

Ft Lauderdale March 2021

Planning on going to Miami Masters this March (covid pending). Decided on staying here over Miami Beach, less crowds and cheaper.

Any tips/ suggestions for area? I definitely plan on exploring south beach and Miami Beach, but hoping my homebase is quieter.

We were in FLL last January. We were there a very short time but had one of the best pizzas I've had anywhere. The place was called Mauros. Cannot recommend enough.

The Las Olas area is where most of the restaurants and shops are. If you’re looking for a hotel consider the Riverside Hotel. Nice location, friendly staff, moderate price (for the area). For an old school Ft Lauderdale restaurant go to Foxy Brown. Great seafood (and local color) at the Southport Raw Bar.

We were there 3 or 4 years ago. Stayed at the Drift Hotel. It's a few blocks from the beach and surprisingly cheap. It was renovated but still had a 1950's retro feel to it. https://thedrifthotel.com/

Great meal at Coconuts. https://www.coconutsfortlauderdale.com/ It was loud and crowded, but atmosphere and food was great.

We took a harbour cruise one evening and saw the homes of the rich-and sometimes famous. I'm not talking athlete rich, but hedge fund rich. We also saw J.K. Rowling's yacht on the cruise. If I remember the name of the company I'll edit this post.

Want a beautiful Florida beach without a crazy party scene? Fort Lauderdale Beach may be just what you're looking for. Here you will find a calmer and less chaotic version of Miami Beach  – but with the same sugary sands and crystal-clear water. There are still parties, but you're more likely to find families relaxing or leisurely walking the waterline than raucous groups of college kids. Backing the shoreline, the town's signature wavy white divider separates the sand from a promenade that bustles with residents and resort guests jogging and strolling. A string of breaks in the thigh-high wall allows entry onto the beach at crossroads.

Restaurants, bars and shops are also available across the street.

One of the best ways to take in your surroundings in the so-called "Venice of America" is to sign up for a boat tour. Fort Lauderdale boat operators offer a variety of ways to get out on the water, from traditional sightseeing outings to fishing charters to themed excursions in specialty boats. The following are a few traveler favorites:

Carrie B Cruises: For a standard narrated tour of Fort Lauderdale's waterways, consider booking a cruise with Carrie B Cruises . Lasting about 90 minutes, Carrie B Cruises' sightseeing excursions travel up and down the New River and Intracoastal Waterway, passing Port Everglades and Millionaires Row (a waterfront strip of mansions in the Las Olas Isles neighborhood) along the way. Each trip departs daily at 11 a.m., 1 or 3 p.m. from October through April, but cruises are not available on Tuesdays and Wednesdays between May and September. Adult tickets cost $27.95; passes for children ages 3 to 12 are $15.95, and kids 2 and younger ride for free; reduced rates are available for visitors who book in advance online.

A small seaside town with a lot going on, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea warrants a visit for sidewalk dining, a stroll down Commercial Boulevard's shops or a beach visit away from Fort Lauderdale's bustle and crowds. A mere 100 yards from shore, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea earns its reputation as South Florida's beach-diving capital with waters that teem with coral reef marine life and a historic shipwreck.

Bonnet House Museum & Gardens Bonnet House Museum & Gardens

This house sitting between the Intracoastal Waterway and Fort Lauderdale Beach has a long history. In 1919, a wealthy settler gave the 35-acre property (named after the bonnet lily flower that grew on the grounds) as a wedding gift to his daughter, Helen, and her husband, Frederic. In 1920, the newlyweds began construction of Bonnet House, hoping to build a winter getaway where Frederic could pursue his art and Helen could work on her music and poetry. But construction soon stopped when Helen died in 1925 from breast cancer. Frederic didn't resume property renovations until 1931 when he married Evelyn Fortune Lilly. The new couple continued decorating the house until Frederic's death. Several decades later in 1983, Evelyn donated the house to the state's Trust for Historic Preservation, opening it to visitors for guided tours.

Previous travelers said Bonnet House has something to keep every type of traveler satisfied: Art lovers, horticulture enthusiasts, animal lovers and history buffs will enjoy this attraction. Many recommended the guided tour. The plantation home is ornately decorated and filled with artwork (all three residents of the house were artists of some kind), but the estate's grounds are also well worth the visit. The campus is lush and beautiful for a nice walk through nature and even sometimes accompanied by monkeys. However, some noted that not every room in the house has air conditioning, so bring a hand fan if you're visiting during the summer months.

Hugh Taylor Birch State Park Hugh Taylor Birch State Park

Located a few blocks north of the Bonnet House Museum & Gardens , Hugh Taylor Birch State Park's position between the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean makes it a fun locale for all types of travelers. Those looking to get out on the water can canoe or kayak in the largest of the park's coastal dune lakes. Adventurers who want to get their adrenaline pumping can bike along the nearly 2-mile paved park drive. Meanwhile, visitors who prefer to explore by foot can hike the Coastal Hammock Trail, which snakes through a native maritime tropical hardwood hammock ecosystem, one of the last of its kind in Broward County. Fisherman can make a catch at the seawall, while birders can look for 250-plus species that live in and regularly grace the park.

Many past visitors were quick to call this attraction a hidden treasure that shouldn't be missed, no matter how long your trip to Fort Lauderdale is. Some cautioned the parking lots fill early in the day. Travelers found the park to be an oasis, citing its abundant flora and fauna and plentiful activities as highlights. Others appreciated the easy access to the beach, as there is a tunnel that brings visitors under the highway and directly to the shoreline.

Las Olas Boulevard Las Olas Boulevard free

Diverse restaurants, a bevy of international art galleries and dozens of retail options line Las Olas Boulevard. But while casual walkers and window-shoppers enjoy soaking in the Floridian atmosphere and overall aesthetic of the boulevard, the more intent consumer may not find this commercial street as appealing due to the high price tags and crowded restaurants at night. However, travelers recommend grabbing a bite to eat above all else, as many were impressed with the quality of food and the amount of alfresco dining options available. Our advice would be to make a stop here if you're planning to visit the nearby Riverwalk Fort Lauderdale or local museums like the Museum of Discovery and Science .

In terms of parking, there are both on-street and private lots available to customers. Street parking is metered starting at 11 a.m. in most locations, and city and private lots can be found on the side streets that run parallel to the boulevard. The Riverside Hotel also offers a seven-story parking lot. For visitors without cars, the water taxi's No. 2 stop is next to Las Olas Boulevard. Additionally, the No. 11 bus and Sun Trolley's Las Olas Link pick up and drop off along the thoroughfare.

Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park

About 10 miles south of Fort Lauderdale in Dania Beach, the sands at this state park seem a world away from the bustling metro. This state park earns high marks from visitors for its seclusion, abundance of picnic facilities and snack bar with beer on tap at its Whiskey Creek Hideout concession. It's also known for its superlative birding, boating facilities and paddle sports in the mangrove-lined creek. Snorkelers will be pleased to know the 2-mile-long beach boasts one of area's easiest and most interesting shore dives.

The site was formerly called John U. Lloyd Beach State Park, but in 2016, the Florida legislature renamed the park in honor of Civil Rights leaders who staged "wade-in" protests against beach segregation in the 1950s and 1960s, when it was known as a "colored beach." The dunes-edged park is the last undeveloped coastal ecosystem in the county.

Take an airboat tour at Sawgrass Recreation Park Take an airboat tour at Sawgrass Recreation Park

Take an airboat tour of the Florida Everglades at Sawgrass Recreation Park and prepare to be amazed (or scared) by the close-up views of alligators and other creatures. You can even reserve an airboat tour for nighttime runs to observe nocturnal animals in their natural state. Or, arrange for a private tour for a more unique experience, such as a sunrise tour.

Past travelers raved about their airboat rides at Sawgrass Recreation Park. In fact, many were surprised at how close they were able to get to the gators and found their tour guides to be knowledgeable and entertaining. Some were disappointed about not seeing enough alligators as, of course, there are no guarantees.

Museum of Discovery and Science Museum of Discovery and Science

If it's a rainy day and you need an indoor activity that will appeal to the kids, take them to the Museum of Discovery and Science. The museum is filled with so many activities and exhibits, your kids may never want to leave. Admire the museum's resident river otters at the two-story habitat, learn more about Florida weather patterns at the Storm Center or experience the concepts of physical science at the outdoor Science Park. Other must-visit spots in the museum include an aviation station, where kids can climb into the cockpit of a World War II fighter plane, and the Great Gravity Clock – the biggest kinetic energy sculpture in Florida. If that's not enough, visitors can catch a film at the 300-seat IMAX 3D theater, buy a souvenir at the gift shop or pick up something to eat at the Elements Cafe.

Whether you're traveling with or without kids, recent museumgoers highly recommend a stop at the property. However, some noted that certain exhibits were outdated and in need of an upgrade, as some interactive features didn't function as promised.

Riverwalk Arts and Entertainment District Riverwalk Arts and Entertainment District free

Spanning 22 blocks, the Riverwalk Arts and Entertainment District holds some of Fort Lauderdale's top attractions. You'll find the NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale, the Broward Center for the Performing Arts , the Museum of Discovery and Science and the Historic Stranahan House Museum , in addition to many restaurants, green spaces and shops. The district is set along the New River in downtown Fort Lauderdale and is a lovely place to stroll or sit on a bench with a cup of coffee. It also encompasses Las Olas Boulevard , where you will find many shopping, dining and nightlife venues.

Recent travelers said they enjoyed the views along the river and found the paved stretch to be a perfect place to go for a walk. Additionally, many recommended hopping on the free LauderGO! Water Trolley, which operates like a bus system with eight different stops along the river's north and south banks. The water trolley runs from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day. Riders can track the location of the water trolley using its live tracking page , or simply wait 20 to 30 minutes at the nearest stop.

Flamingo Gardens Flamingo Gardens

Tucked away on an unassuming street in Davie, Florida, Flamingo Gardens is a botanical garden and Everglades wildlife refuge situated 17 miles west of downtown Fort Lauderdale. Once inside the gates, you will be transported to a stunning 60-acre tropical oasis filled with roaming peacocks, native Florida wildlife and more than 3,000 plant species.

A nonprofit organization, Flamingo Gardens aims to preserve endangered, injured animals in naturalistic habitats and educate the public on the history of South Florida and the area's flora and fauna. Animals on-site include sea otters, rehabilitated Florida panthers, a rescued black bear (named Josh), alligators, 250 bird species and – of course – the sanctuary's namesake Caribbean flamingos. Recent visitors loved the park's narrated tram tour through 200-year-old live oak trees and tropical groves, noting it was the perfect way to get an overview of the park. The 25-minute ride is free of charge and leaves every 30 minutes between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. (hourly on the hour weekdays in August and September).

Butterfly World Butterfly World

Butterfly World, the largest butterfly house on Earth and the first of its kind in the United States, has been in business since 1986 and is home to more than 20,000 live butterflies. The 3-acre attraction was the brainchild of Ronald Boender, a former electrical engineer with a fascination for raising butterflies. He is also known for starting the "Bring Butterflies Back" campaign in 1988, which led to the creation of thousands of new butterfly habitats and an increase in butterfly populations across North America. Today, visitors of Butterfly World can not only interact with more than 50 butterfly species at any one time, but also admire tropical birds and feed lorikeets.

This Coconut Creek attraction, located about 15 miles north of downtown Fort Lauderdale, is a great place to bring children. Recent patrons said it was a beautiful and unique place to spend an afternoon, and they were amazed to see the butterflies flying all around them. Another highlight was feeding the birds in the lorikeet enclosure. No outside food is permitted at Butterfly World, but you can bring lunch to eat at designated picnic benches outside of the entrance. There are also two outdoor cafes on the premises that sell snacks and drinks.

Bluefoot Pirate Adventures Bluefoot Pirate Adventures

Pirate wannabes of all ages enjoy this smooth sail aboard the pirate ship Bluefoot in the Intracoastal Waterway. While the pirate crew keeps kids entertained dressing as pirates, hunting for treasure, learning to "talk pirate" and blowing off water-balloon cannons, adults can enjoy a narrated tour of the local mansions and mega-yachts lining the waterway. Time on the water is one hour; families are urged to arrive 30 minutes early to get the kids properly dressed and (temporary) tattooed.

Visitors speak highly of the staff's engagement with kids, especially the antics of Captain Black Sparrow. Most found the cruise equally entertaining for children and adults, who especially enjoyed the cannon battle.

Gulfstream Park Gulfstream Park

Whether you're looking to spend a day at the races or just find a nice spot for dinner, Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach has you covered. The Gulfstream Park racetrack opened in 1939 as one of the top horse racing venues in the United States. It has continued its legacy with world-class races every Wednesday to Sunday from December through September, and it caters to both beginners and experienced bettors. Admission is free, but various luxury boxes and private suites are available for serious racing enthusiasts. Special events at the park include the annual Florida Derby – considered the biggest racing day of the year in South Florida – at the end of March or beginning of April.

In recent years, Gulfstream Park has grown to include the Village at Gulfstream, a dining, outdoor shopping and entertainment venue. There you'll find art galleries and stores like Crate & Barrel and Bang & Olufsen, dining options ranging from Texas De Brazil to Yard House and even a casino, a bowling alley and karaoke rooms.

Historic Stranahan House Museum Historic Stranahan House Museum

Situated just off Las Olas Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale, the Historic Stranahan House Museum is Fort Lauderdale's oldest structure with a storied past. Frank Stranahan, an Ohio businessman, moved to Florida in the early 1890s and is considered to be Fort Lauderdale's founding father. He built Stranahan House in 1901 for use as a trading post and community hall. It later transitioned into a private residence for Stranahan and his wife, Ivy, and was renovated between 1913 and 1915. After Stranahan's untimely death in 1929 during an economic crisis, Ivy Stranahan rented out rooms of the home and leased the lower floor to a few restaurants. After her passing in 1971, the house was left to the Seventh Day Adventist Church and then purchased by the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society in 1975. The organization restored the house between 1980 and 1984, and opened it to the public later that year as the Historic Stranahan House Museum.

Visitors must take a guided tour to see the museum. Tours last between 45 minutes and an hour and take place at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. daily (with the exception of major holidays). Inside the property, you'll learn about the history of the house, the Stranahan family and Fort Lauderdale as a whole. Admission costs $12 for adults and $7 for students. The Historic Stranahan House Museum is especially lovely during the holiday season, when it is decorated in a Victorian Christmas theme and entertains visitors with live music and tours by costumed docents.

Shop till you drop at Sawgrass Mills Shop till you drop at Sawgrass Mills free

Located in Sunrise, Florida – about 15 miles west of downtown Fort Lauderdale – Sawgrass Mills mall is a shopping destination like no other. Known by locals simply as "Sawgrass," it is the largest outlet mall in the United States. Within the 350-store complex, you will find a variety of retail sections with shops ranging from budget-friendly options like a Super Target, Marshalls, J.Crew Factory and Nike Factory Store to the Colonnade's exclusive luxury-brand outlets like Tory Burch, Prada, Jimmy Choo and Kate Spade. Sawgrass also houses a cinema with an IMAX movie theater, a post office, two food courts and several restaurants, including The Cheesecake Factory, California Pizza Kitchen, Rainforest Cafe (a great spot for families) and conveyor belt style SushiGami. If you hope to see the entire mall, plan on spending at least one full day here.

Sawgrass Mills is such a major shopping destination that it is not uncommon to see vacationers wheeling empty suitcases around the mall and filling them up with their purchases as they shop. Though Sawgrass Mills no longer offers an official tour bus to and from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, there are third-party direct shuttles and town car services available. Still, the best way to travel to and from the airport (and around South Florida in general) is by renting a car of your own. To cater to international travelers, the mall even has its own currency-exchange station. For transportation from the Fort Lauderdale-International Airport, take the Tri-Rail train to the Fort Lauderdale station and transfer to Broward County Transit bus No. 22 westbound directly to the mall.

It will be busy -- Thanksgiving is the busiest travel time of the year in the US -- and it takes but one accident to tie up the whole works for hours on end.

Leave early -- most schools are out on the Wednesday, and many offices close down at noon -- and many more people work only a half-day, so that they can get on the road to visit family.

Traffic will be heavy and slow -- and the later in the day you wait, the worse it will be.

By the way -- the Wednesday before is the busiest travel day of the year in the US -- if you're flying out on Thursday, things might be reasonably settled down, but I wouldn't count on it.

Make sure you are at the airport the full 2-3 hours ahead of time, as if there are any weather delays in the country, it will cause a massive jam throughout the entire US system, and the airports will be a nightmare.

fort lauderdale travel forum

I think Rugby is saying he is leaving Siesta Key to go to Weston, Fl, not the airport.

I don't think you will have too much trouble S of Estero or Bonita Springs as you drive I 75 S.....as that is past the major airport.

You will probably have a lot of traffic at the toll booths before you enter the portion of I 75 that cuts across the Everglades, but once you get to the better side, you will hit the exits for Weston first. There are three main exits here, and I 75 goes E & then S around the Weston area.

If the traffic is very heavy on I 75 as you leave I 75 alligator alley section, get off at the first Weston exit. It might be better than trying to get through the vast interchange network you will see a bit further East on I 75....including the maze to get to Ft Laud on I 595 ( to the FLL airport), or the Sawgrass Expressway. I think the first exit from that approach in Indian Trace. But it will also say Weston.

If you stay on I 75 ( are lost), the last exit for Weston will say Griffin Road. You must exit there, stay on right, and turn R onto Weston Road...back into Weston.

Best time to leave Siesta Key...I would leave very early. As those above said, you can't tell might cause a back up.....maybe between 5 & 6 AM. It not many hours without traffic, but if you can get past the Estero. Naples area early....I think you have a clear shot.

You will probably get to destination too early....

BUT.....maybe Sawgrass Mills will be open the Wed before Thanksgiving......a lot better than Miramar...a lot bigger, and just a few miles outside of Weston in Sunrise.

I understood that they weren't flying out on Thursday.

Bleh. I understood that they WERE flying out on Thursday, and not on Wednesday.

An edit function sure would be nice!

Thats for sure!

I guess an edit function costs more!!!???

Thanks for the advice folks. In fact, we're not flying anywhere around Thanksgiving. We arrive on Nov. 9, spend a week with family in Weston, and give them, and us, a break, by heading out for a few days. We have a saying...fish and guests smell after three days.... We don't leave the US till Nov. 24, so a nice long break.... during which I hit the big Five Oh. But you're only as old as you feel.... Appreciate the guidance. Cheers!

Hey....Happy Birthday!!!!!. Came up fast on you, didn't it?

Not too worry -- I was just afraid that you'd show up at the airport on Thursday, expecting it to be a normal weekday travel...and be sadly shocked by the queues!

That entire weekend, by the way, for anyone else who might be traveling around that time, will be a right mess in any airport in the country -- the Sunday (25 Nov) will be a particular nightmare, too, as everyone tries to get back in time to get back to work and school on Monday!

Keep an eye on the national weather for travel that week -- as I mentioned, a weather delay anywhere in the country will stop up the works from coast to coast.
