Carry-On Allowance

First and Business class passengers are allowed two carry-ons. Economy class and Premium Economy class passengers are permitted one carry-on. Assistive devices and outer garments do not count as personal items. All carry-on luggage must fit in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you and adhere to the following requirements:

Checked Baggage Allowance

Intercontinental flights

The following basic regulations apply for the free baggage allowance on all intercontinental flights operated by Lufthansa:

• Economy Class: 1 bag up to 23 kg (50 lb)
• Premium Economy Class: 2 bags up to 23 kg (50 lb) each
• Business Class: 2 bags up to 32 kg (70 lb) each
• First Class: 3 bags up to 32 kg (70 lb) each

Free baggage allowance for status customers on intercontinental flights

If you are traveling on Lufthansa's "Economy Light" product, you are allowed one piece of carry-on baggage. This fare includes no free baggage allowance, however, a piece of checked baggage can be added to your booking for a fee.

Frequent Traveller

• Economy Class: 2 bags up to 23 kg (50 lb)

Senator / HON Circle Member / Star Alliance Gold member

• Premium Economy Class: 3 bags up to 23 kg (50 lb) each
• Business Class: 3 bags up to 32 kg (70 lb) each

European flights

For flights within Europe the free baggage rules are determined by the new Europe fare options:

• Economy Light: 1 piece of carry-on baggage up to 8 kg only
• Economy Classic / Flex: 1 piece of carry-on baggage up to 8 kg; 1 bag up to 23 kg
• Business Class: 2 pieces of carry-on baggage up to 8 kg; 2 bags up 32 kg
• Economy Class Light: Carry-on baggage only
• Economy Class Classic: 2 bags up to 23 kg (50 lb)
• Economy Class Flex: Flex: 2 bags up to 23 kg (50 lb)
• Business Class: 2 bags up to 32 kg. (70 lb)

Free baggage dimensions

The maximum size per piece of baggage, regardless of class, is 158 cm (width + height + depth). Items of baggage that are larger or heavier than the permitted dimensions and weight or that are additional to the free baggage allowance will be carried as excess baggage for a flat fee. Items that weigh more than 32 kg will be transported by air freight for a charge.

Additionally, Lufthansa allows for the free transport of a pushchair or baby basket. Disabled passengers are allowed free transport of two wheelchairs or other mobility aids in addition to their free baggage allowance.

Overweight Baggage Fees

Heavier than free baggage allowance (24 – 32 kg): 50 € / USD 70 within Europe / between third countries and 100 € / USD 150 on intercontinental flights

Excess and Oversize Baggage Fees

Economy and Premium Economy Class

Larger than free baggage allowance (from 159 cm): 100 € / USD 150 within Europe / between third countries and 200 € / USD 300 on intercontinental flights

Larger and heavier than free baggage allowance (24 – 32 kg and from 159 cm): 150 € / USD 220 within Europe / between third countries and 300 € / USD 450 on intercontinental flights.

Business and First Class

Larger than free baggage allowance (from 159 cm): 100 € / USD 150 within Europe / between third countries and 200 € / USD 300 on intercontinental flights.

Sports Equipment

Sports baggage is carried free of charge as part of your permitted free baggage allowance.

Sports baggage must be registered up to 24 hours before departure via the reservation hotline.

In addition to your free baggage allowance, you may take one piece of ski or snowboarding equipment free of charge on your Lufthansa flight. The maximum weight of an additional piece of ski or snowboarding equipment must be within the weight limits of the travel class you have booked. Please note that this rule only applies to flights operated by Lufthansa.

Because of limited capacities and differing rules on partner airlines, Lufthansa cannot guarantee when you book that your ski baggage will be accepted in every case. Please register your ski bag up to 24 hours before departure via the reservation hotline, regardless of whether your ski bag is within your free baggage allowance or is being checked in as excess baggage.

CPAP Devices:

Lufthansa will accept assistive devices with batteries as checked baggage as well as inside the cabin. Assistive devices with batteries include CPAP machines. Lufthansa will allow qualified individuals with a disability who are using FAA approved personal respirators/ventilators to bring their equipment, including non-spillable batteries, onboard the aircraft. You must have sufficient battery power for 150% of the maximum flight duration.

Miles and More is Europe’s most extensive frequent flyer program. 

All the Lufthansa Group airlines (Lufthansa, Eurowings, Swiss, Austrian, Brussels Airlines, Air Dolomiti, and Edelweiss Air) participate in the program. Better still, the Lufthansa Group is also part of Star Alliance , the biggest airline alliance in the world. 

Star Alliance includes global airlines like Turkish and Singapore, but also North American carriers United and Air Canada. 

Thanks to the global Star Alliance network, you can use your Lufthansa frequent traveler benefits with over 30 airlines – making it easier to redeem your points. 

One of the primary benefits of the Miles and More program is that you can use the miles to fly anywhere. 

Here are some examples of the global possibilities with the Lufthansa frequent traveler program. 

These are some of the flights I booked or upgraded with Lufthansa miles: 

• Copa flight from Santa Cruz, Bolivia to Panama;
• United flight from Atlanta to Miami;
• Singapore Airlines flight from Singapore to Bangkok; and 
• Aegean Flight from Larnaca to Barcelona via Athens. 

In short, Miles and More is a top-notch program because you can use the miles on so many airlines. Even if you aren’t a super-frequent traveler, you’ll find ways to redeem your miles, which isn’t always the case with other loyalty programs. 

The Lufthansa Frequent Traveler Program: How to Earn Lufthansa Miles

Now that we know what the Miles and More program is, it’s time to earn some sweet Lufthansa air miles. 

How to Earn Lufthansa Miles Through the LH Group and Star Alliance Flights

The easiest way to earn Lufthansa miles is by flying with one of the Lufthansa Group airlines or a Star Alliance member. 

It’s simple, but you don’t get a lot of miles if you fly in economy class. For flights within Europe , you get between 100 and 1,500 miles, depending on the booking class. 

For intercontinental flights from or to Europe, the miles you get are calculated by distance. In economy class , you’ll get around one mile per mile flown. In business class, it will be between 1.5 and two times the miles flown.

As an example, if you book an economy flight from Frankfurt to Sao Paulo , you get around 7,000 miles. If you buy that same ticket in business class, you’ll gain over 14,000 miles. 

In short, you’ll quickly get lots of Lufthansa miles if you frequently fly intercontinental or buy business class tickets. 

How to Earn Lufthansa Miles Through Hotels and Car Rentals

You can access the Miles and More hotel and rental car booking platform through the website. 

The prices for hotels are a bit higher than on Booking.com , for example, but you can earn a lot of miles this way. 

In this context, if you book an upper-mid-range hotel for 70-150 USD per night, you often get around 1,000 miles per night.

Consequently, earning Lufthansa miles by using their hotel booking platform is a worthwhile option if you are not a frequent flyer. 

You can also use partner companies like Marriott Bonvoy and Booking.com . On these websites, however, the number of miles you get per euro spent is lower than on the Miles and More platform. 

How to Earn Lufthansa Miles Through Credit Cards

Miles and More has partnerships with credit institutions in over 20 countries. 

In the US, you can get a Miles and More Barclay’s credit card if you meet the qualifications. If you spend 3,000 USD in your first three months, you usually get around 50,000 bonus miles – enough for a transatlantic economy flight. The card has an 89 USD annual fee, making it a better value than many comparable ones. 

There are other credit card solutions, depending on where you live. 

Credits cards are generally a great solution to earn miles, and Lufthansa is no different. However, the Miles and More credit cards only give you one mile per dollar spent. That amount isn’t competitive with some other cards that provide two miles per dollar spent. 

Can You Buy Miles and More Miles?

The Lufthansa frequent traveler program does not currently offer the option to buy miles. 

What Are Lufthansa Status Miles and HON Circle Miles? 

There are three different types of Miles and More points: miles , Lufthansa status miles , and HON Circle miles .

First, the regular miles are the ones you earn on flights, hotels, and other partner companies.

Secondly, you earn Lufthansa status miles through Lufthansa Group and Star Alliance flights. 

Finally, you earn HON Circle miles by purchasing business or first-class tickets on Lufthansa Group and codeshare partner airlines. 

The status miles will determine your status with Miles and More. There are four qualifications:

• Member : no status miles required;
• Frequent Travel : 35,000 status miles or 30 flight segments within a calendar year; 
• Senator : 100,000 status miles within a calendar year; and 
• HON Circle member : 600,000 HON Circle miles within two consecutive calendar years.

Every status level has different benefits like free baggage allowances, business lounge access, more miles, and upgrades. 

The Lufthansa Frequent Traveler Program: Best Ways to Redeem 

Now that we’ve covered the part on how to earn Lufthansa miles, it’s time to get to the fun part: spending them.

How to Redeem Miles and More Points on Flights 

Redeeming miles on flights is undoubtedly the best-valued option with the Lufthansa loyalty program. 

See the chart below for the prices of an award ticket. These awards work for all Lufthansa Group airlines as well as their mileage partners. Be aware that not all Star Alliance members are Lufthansa mileage partners. 

If an airline is a Star Alliance member but not a mileage partner, you can earn but not redeem your miles on that airline. 

You can, for example, earn Lufthansa miles on Turkish Airlines flights, but you cannot buy a Turkish airlines ticket with Lufthansa miles. 

United, on the other hand, is both a mileage partner and a Star Alliance member.

If you are wondering how to use Lufthansa miles on United, the following is the best solution. You can buy an award ticket with United from New York to Austin, for example, and pay with Lufthansa miles on the Lufthansa website. 

Prices for Lufthansa Award Tickets in Miles

The prices depend on the length of the flight and the booking class. The miles you see in the chart are always for return flights. So, you can get can a one-way ticket with half the miles. 

In this context, I recently bought an Aegean Airlines ticket from Cyprus to Barcelona via Athens with 17,000 Lufthansa miles, which is more or less what the chart states. 

How to Get a Lufthansa Upgrade With Miles 

Getting a Miles and More business upgrade is straightforward on some routes and challenging on others. 

As a rule of thumb, it’s easy to upgrade from premium economy to business on a transatlantic flight. Upgrading from economy to business requires a lot of miles that you could easily spend on an award ticket. Some economy tickets aren’t upgradable, especially if it’s a promotional fare. 

Upgrading from business to first class is the best value for your money, but you still need to purchase an expensive business class ticket. 

For a transatlantic flight, you can generally upgrade from premium economy to business class with around 30,000 miles. For Asian flights, the price is closer to 50,000 miles. 

Here’s an example of a Lufthansa upgrade:

• I bought a premium economy ticket from Santa Cruz, Bolivia to Panama City (Copa Airlines – part of Star Alliance) and then to Frankfurt (Eurowings – part of the Lufthansa Group) for around 900 USD. 
• I then upgraded the Panama-Frankfurt flight to business class by paying 30,000 miles. 

The business class ticket from Panama to Frankfurt alone would have cost in the region of 3,000 USD, so the Lufthansa upgrade was a no-brainer. 

Redeem Miles and More Points on Hotels 

You can redeem your miles on the Miles and More hotel booking platform, but I do not recommend that. 

You’ll get a discount on the nightly price of your hotel, but the monetary value is low. As such, redeeming your miles on awards flights and Lufthansa business upgrades will save you a lot more money. 

Other Lufthansa Frequent Traveler Rewards 

You can spend your miles in Lufthansa’s online shop and other travel-related platforms. 

However, much like spending miles on hotels, this isn’t the best-value option. 

All in all, earning miles through hotels and car rentals is a better option than redeeming them in that manner. 

Conclusion on Miles and More: the Lufthansa Frequent Traveler Program

Miles and More is one of the best frequent flyer programs out there. 

If we compare it to the Air France-KLM Flying Blue program , for example, it’s easier to earn and spend miles with Lufthansa thanks to their partnership with Star Alliance.   

Here’s a recap on the best ways to earn and spend Lufthansa miles:

• The easiest way to earn Lufthansa miles is through flying a lot, booking hotels on their platform, and credit cards;
• The best ways to spend Miles and More points are to buy award tickets or upgrade;
• The main limitations of the program concern airlines that are Star Alliance members but not mileage partners like Turkish Airlines (Update 2023: some Turkish Airlines flights can be bought with Lufthansa miles, but not all of them).

To conclude, it’s best to use the Lufthansa loyalty program if you fly a lot in Europe and North America. Those are Lufthansa’s bases, but the group’s partnerships also cover Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America. 

The hotel booking platform gives you a lot of miles for your money – creating additional possibilities to earn Lufthansa miles. 

As such, the Lufthansa program shines through versatility – making it one of the most usable airline loyalty schemes.

I recently paid for a Turkish Airlines ticket with lufthansa miles. It may be that at the time in which you wrote the article it was like you say it. The Turkish airlines flight appeared directly at the Lufthansa website when booking with miles.

Lufthansa has a standard piece concept, meaning passengers must adhere to the number of checked bags allocated to their fare type. The weight cannot be split across multiple pieces.

Lufthansa Carry-On Allowance

Economy and premium economy passengers may bring 1 standard carry-on, and business and first class passengers may bring 2. Each piece may weigh up to 17.6 pounds (8 kg) and measure up to 21.6 x 15.7 x 9 inches (55 x 40 x 23 cm).

All passengers may also bring 1 personal item measuring 11.8 x 15.7 x 3.9 inches (30 x 40 x 10 cm).

Starting in the summer of 2021, Lufthansa will debut catering from Munich-based dean&david through Gate Gourmet with a price range of €2 to €12. Hot beverages and confectionery and patisserie specialties continue to be supplied by Munich-based Dallmayr.

Lufthansa Customer Satisfaction

It’s uncommon to come across negative comments on Lufthansa’s Facebook page, which is not surprising since quite a few followers have posted that their negative comments have been removed — not the sign of a transparent and balanced attitude towards customer service.

Some passengers have questioned whether Lufthansa truly deserves its 5-star status, with complaints of old aircraft, lousy food, and poor service.

One critical factor for the Skytrax accreditation is the consistency of standards, and passenger reviews don’t support this. Passenger opinion is divided, either raving about their experience with Lufthansa or stating they will never fly the airline again. There are very few middle ground reviewers, and that’s what happens with a 5-star airline as the expectation is so high.

Germans are known for their efficiency and professionalism, and this is often the praise Lufthansa receives about its cabin crew, pilots, and ground staff assisting flight connections.

Like many European Airlines, 2018 and 2019 have been tough years for Lufthansa, with hesitant travelers due to the uncertainty of Brexit.

The airline’s long-haul services have remained profitable, so it’s unlikely Lufthansa will be going anywhere — especially with its 2.9% passenger growth in 2019, having transported 145 million passengers.

Lots of controversy surrounded the 5-star status Lufthansa was awarded in 2018, as it was based on the airline’s 777X cabin that hadn’t been launched at the time of the award. There’s no doubt about it, the new cabin concepts look amazing, and hopefully, they will live up to the 5-star rating.

Lufthansa Baggage Policy – Fees & Allowance . Lufthansa actually has a pretty standard baggage fee policy — you just have to tediously sift through all the differences in fares and routes.

They offer Economy Light fares on certain routes, including to and from North America, if you’re looking to travel light with only carry-on luggage.

We should note that excess fees on Lufthansa are pretty standard as well.

Carry-On Allowance

First and Business class passengers are allowed two carry-ons. Economy class and Premium Economy class passengers are permitted one carry-on.

Assistive devices and outer garments do not count as personal items.

The following basic regulations apply for the free baggage allowance on all intercontinental flights operated by Lufthansa:

• Business Class: 2 bags up to 32 kg (70 lb) each
• First Class: 3 bags up to 32 kg (70 lb) each

Free baggage allowance for status customers on intercontinental flights

If you are traveling on Lufthansa’s “Economy Light” product, you are allowed one piece of carry-on baggage. This fare includes no free baggage allowance, however, a piece of checked baggage can be added to your booking for a fee.

• Economy Class: 2 bags up to 23 kg (50 lb)

Senator / HON Circle Member / Star Alliance Gold member

• Premium Economy Class: 3 bags up to 23 kg (50 lb) each

For flights within Europe the free baggage rules are determined by the new Europe fare options:

Free baggage dimensions

The maximum size per piece of baggage, regardless of class, is 158 cm (width + height + depth).

Items of baggage that are larger or heavier than the permitted dimensions and weight or that are additional to the free baggage allowance will be carried as excess baggage for a flat fee.

Items that weigh more than 32 kg will be transported by air freight for a charge.

Additionally, Lufthansa allows for the free transport of a pushchair or baby basket.

Disabled passengers are allowed free transport of two wheelchairs or other mobility aids in addition to their free baggage allowance.

Overweight Baggage Fees

Heavier than free baggage allowance (24 – 32 kg): 50 € / USD 70 within Europe / between third countries and 100 € / USD 150 on intercontinental flights.

Excess and Oversize Baggage Fees

Light Fare passengers are permitted to book 1 item of hold baggage with the exception of flights to and from the U.S. or Canada where the second piece of luggage may be booked for a fee of €90 (~$100) per way.

Economy and Premium Economy Class

Larger than free baggage allowance (from 159 cm): 100 € / USD 150 within Europe / between third countries and 200 € / USD 300 on intercontinental flights

Larger and heavier than free baggage allowance (24 – 32 kg and from 159 cm): 150 € / USD 220 within Europe / between third countries and 300 € / USD 450 on intercontinental flights.

Business and First Class

Larger than free baggage allowance (from 159 cm): 100 € / USD 150 within Europe / between third countries and 200 € / USD 300 on intercontinental flights.

Sports Equipment

Sports baggage is carried free of charge as part of your permitted free baggage allowance.

Sports baggage must be registered up to 24 hours before departure via the reservation hotline.

In addition to your free baggage allowance, you may take one piece of ski or snowboarding equipment free of charge on your Lufthansa flight.

The maximum weight of an additional piece of ski or snowboarding equipment must be within the weight limits of the travel class you have booked.

Please note that this rule only applies to flights operated by Lufthansa.

Because of limited capacities and differing rules on partner airlines, Lufthansa cannot guarantee when you book that your ski baggage will be accepted in every case.

Please register your ski bag up to 24 hours before departure via the reservation hotline, regardless of whether your ski bag is within your free baggage allowance or is being checked in as excess baggage.

CPAP Devices:

Lufthansa will accept assistive devices with batteries as checked baggage as well as inside the cabin.

Assistive devices with batteries include CPAP machines.

Lufthansa will allow qualified individuals with a disability who are using FAA approved personal respirators/ventilators to bring their equipment, including non-spillable batteries, onboard the aircraft.

You must have sufficient battery power for 150% of the maximum flight duration.

Can I take a handbag as well as hand luggage on Lufthansa?

Yes, Lufthansa has a carry-on baggage policy of 1 personal item such as a handbag or briefcase and a standard carry-on piece.

How many bags can I carry on Lufthansa?

Lufthansa allows passengers to bring 1 personal item that must not exceed 11.8 x 15.7 x 3.9 inches (30 x 40 x 10 cm).

Economy and premium economy travelers are permitted to also bring 1 piece of standard carry-on up to a maximum weight of 17.6 pounds (8 kg) and 21.6 x 15.7 x 9 inches (55 x 40 x 23 cm).

Business and first class passengers can bring 2 carry-on bags.

Does Lufthansa charge for baggage?

Lufthansa only charges for Economy Light fares on European flights as no checked baggage is included.

Booking online (up to 2 hours before departure) fees are $16 for domestic flights and $27 within Europe.

Is a backpack considered a personal item on Lufthansa?

Lufthansa would consider a backpack a personal item if it does not exceed maximum dimensions of 11.8 x 15.7 x 3.9 inches (30 x 40 x 10 cm).

If it is larger than this allowance then there is a chance you could be asked to check your carry-on piece or backpack.

When traveling with Lufthansa, your cabin and check-in baggage allowances will vary according to your route of travel, and your selected class of travel/fare type.

In this article, I explain Lufthansa’s cabin and check-in luggage allowances based on Lufthansa’s two zones of travel – Europe or Intercontinental. I describe Lufthansa’s free baggage allowances and how you can purchase any additional baggage allowance that you may require.  

As with all airlines, Lufthansa may change its baggage rules and allowances at short notice, so please consult the Lufthansa website for any latest information, and carefully check the conditions of travel before you book and confirm your ticket.

The maximum permitted free weight allowance of each check-in baggage item is 23kg in Economy and Premium Economy classes, and 32kg in Business and First Class.

Baggage items that are larger than these limits will need to be carried as excess baggage, and a fee will be payable.

Lufthansa Flights Within Europe

Free baggage allowances.

Your free baggage allowances when traveling with Lufthansa within Europe depend on your class of travel, and when flying Economy Class, these allowances also depend on your chosen fare type:

• Economy Lite – one item of carry-on baggage weighing up to 8kg.
• Economy Classic and Economy Flex – one item of carry-on baggage weighing up to 8kg, and one item of check-in baggage weighing up to 23kg.
• Business Class – two items of carry-on baggage each weighing up to 8kg, and two items of check-in baggage each weighing up to 32kg.

Trolleys, foldable clothes bags, or foldable pushchairs count as carry-on baggage.

In addition, you can take one personal item with you such as a laptop bag, handbag, or shopping bag.

Additional Baggage Charges

Economy Lite passengers can purchase 23kg of check-in baggage as follows:

• First bag – €25 online, or €50 at check-in or at the boarding gate.
• Additional bags – €65 online, or €80 at check-in.

Economy Class passengers can purchase an additional 23kg of check-in baggage at a price of €65 online, or €80 at the check-in counter.  

Business Class passengers can purchase an additional 32kg of check-in baggage at a price of €65 online, or €80 at the check-in counter.  

Lufthansa Intercontinental Flights

Your free baggage allowances when traveling with Lufthansa on an intercontinental route depend on your class of travel, and when flying Economy Class, they also depend on your chosen fare type:

• Economy – one item of carry-on baggage weighing up to 8kg, and one item of check-in baggage weighing up to 23kg.
• Premium Economy – one item of carry-on baggage weighing up to 8kg, and two items of check-in baggage each weighing up to 23kg.
• First Class – two items of carry-on baggage each weighing up to 8kg, and three items of check-in baggage each weighing up to 32kg.

The fees for any baggage in addition to your free allowance vary by the length of your route. To demonstrate the typical scale of charges I checked the one-way fees for two different Lufthansa routes – Munich to New York, and Munich to Sydney.

Munich – New York Economy Lite passengers can purchase 23kg check-in baggage as follows:

• First bag – €65 online, or at check-in.
• Second bag – €80 online, or €90 at check-in.
• Additional bags – €160 online, or €200 at check-in.

Munich – New York Economy Class passengers can purchase an additional 23kg of check-in baggage as follows:

Munich – New York Business Class and First Class passengers can purchase an additional 32kg of check-in baggage at a price of €160 online, or €200 at check-in. 

Munich – Sydney Economy Lite and Economy Class passengers can purchase an additional 23kg of check-in baggage for €200 online, or €250 at check-in.

Munich – Sydney Business Class and First Class passengers can purchase an additional 32kg of check-in baggage at a price of €200 online, or €250 at check-in. 

The Lufthansa website includes a ‘Baggage Calculator’ where you can input an origin, destination, and class of travel/fare type, and it will provide details of the free baggage allowance and the charges for any additional or excess baggage.

Lufthansa Excess Baggage

Excess baggage is charged at flat rates if your number of check-in bags corresponds to your allowance, but your bags exceed your permitted weight and/or dimensions, or if your number of check-in bags exceeds your allowance.

In Economy and Premium Economy Class, an item of baggage is considered to be excess baggage when it weighs more than 23kg (up to the permitted maximum weight of 32 kg) and/or its combined dimensions are larger than 158cm (width X + height Y + depth Z), up to a maximum permitted value of 292cm.

In Business and First Class, an item of baggage is considered to be excess baggage when its combined dimensions are larger than 158cm, up to a maximum permitted value of 292cm. For Business and First Class, the single item maximum weight allowance of 32kg matches Lufthansa’s maximum permitted check-in bag weight.

Excess Baggage Fees – Europe

The minimum fees for excess baggage, per passenger, are as follows:

The minimum fees for excess baggage, per item, vary by your route of travel and range from €120 to €550 per passenger.

Sports Items

On some routes in Europe, Lufthansa allows a free winter sports allowance for all passengers, except those passengers traveling on Economy Lite fares. The free allowance includes one pair of skis, or one snowboard, plus one other item such as a pair of ski poles or snowboard boots. The maximum weight and dimensions are 23kg and 200cm respectively, per person. You may take a winter sports helmet as well.

For other routes and other sports equipment such as bicycles, diving gear, surfboards, golfing equipment, hang gliders, etc. Lufthansa levies a charge. Please contact Lufthansa directly to enquire about the fees applicable to your equipment and itinerary.

Musical Instruments

You can take a musical instrument with you into the aircraft cabin free of charge, in lieu of a carry-on bag, as long as its dimensions do not exceed 55 x 40 x 23cm (height x width x depth) and its weight does not exceed 8kg.

In exceptional cases, and not guaranteed, you may be able to take slightly larger instruments into the aircraft cabin as long as these can fit in the overhead locker.

If your musical instrument exceeds the dimensions stated above, you must book an additional seat at the same time you book your own ticket via the Lufthansa Service Center. Ticketed musical instruments in the cabin must not exceed the following dimension and weight specifications:

• 155 x 42 x 25cm (height x width x depth) for musical instruments that stand in the cabin.
• 110 x 42 x 50cm (height x width x depth) for musical instruments strapped to a seat.
• Maximum weight 75kg.

Prices for taking your musical instrument are variable and need to be confirmed with Lufthansa.  

Traveling With Infants and Children

Except for Economy Light fares, babies (0–2 years) are entitled to one item of check-in baggage up to a maximum of 23kg and 158cm (width + height + depth).

Children over 2 years have the same free baggage allowance as adults in each travel class.

Suitable child seats, baby baskets, foldable pushchairs, or ‘pocket buggies’ may be taken on board as additional carry-on baggage free of charge.

If you are a member of the Star Alliance Miles & More frequent flyer program you gain additional free baggage allowances when traveling with Lufthansa, depending on your status. More details can be found here:

What are lufthansa’s regulations on carry-on baggage (hand luggage).

On Lufthansa flights, the carry-on baggage allowance depends on the booking class . In addition to the hand luggage allowance, one personal item may be carried on board .

What regulations regarding checked baggage apply on Lufthansa flights?

Lufthansa uses the standard Piece Concept for the free baggage allowance. The free baggage allowance can vary in terms of the number of free bags allowed, as well as the weight of those pieces of baggage, depending on the booking class and route . Miles & More status customers and Star Alliance Gold Members enjoy an additional free baggage allowance.

Maximum weight of 32 kg per bag is accepted for checked baggage, irrespective of travel class.

What rules apply when the journey includes flights with other airlines?

Regarding hand luggage on flights operated by one of Lufthansa’s cooperation partners, the respective partner’s rules apply.

As for checked baggage, the applicable free baggage allowance is shown on your ticket. Except for journeys to/from/across the US , when booking a journey with several airlines, the most significant stretch of the journey (usually the longest geographically) will determine the baggage regulations that apply until a stopover (a break in a journey of more than 24 hours). The baggage regulations of the airline whose code appears in the flight number for the most significant leg of the journey will apply, regardless of which airline actually operates the flight. For example, on a flight from Vienna to Johannesburg connecting in Munich, the most significant stretch of the journey is Munich to Johannesburg with flight number LH 9542 operated by South African Airways. Although South African Airways is operating the flight, Lufthansa’s baggage regulations will apply (LH – Lufthansa’s airline code appears in the flight number).

Special baggage rules apply for flights to/from/across the US as follows:

• Baggage rules apply consistently to all parts of the journey . These rules include hand luggage regulations, the free baggage allowance, the dimensions and weight of each of your bags, and the level of any charges that may be incurred.
• Usually, the baggage rules of the airline which is listed first on the ticket apply . If Lufthansa is listed on the first flight segment of your ticket, Lufthansa’s baggage regulations will apply to your entire journey (both your outbound and return flight).
• However, the airline listed as the first carrier can transfer the baggage rule stipulation to another airline, the so-called “Most Significant Carrier” in the itinerary . In such a case, that other airline’s rules would then apply to the entire journey.
• Therefore, Lufthansa cannot guarantee that the Lufthansa baggage rules will always apply for a Lufthansa-issued ticket. Other airlines often have baggage rules, which differ from those of Lufthansa. For details of the free baggage allowance applying to your individual flight, you should check your ticket and the e-mail confirmation which you receive from Lufthansa.

Carry-on (Hand Luggage)

Passengers with First and Business Class tickets may take two pieces of hand luggage on board with them. Passengers with an Economy Class ticket are only permitted one piece of hand luggage . A piece of hand luggage cannot be larger than 55 x 40 x 23 cm or weigh more than 8 kg . As an exception, foldable garment bags count as hand luggage up to a size of 57 x 54 x 15 cm .

In some cases, such as flights with small aircraft, mainly on regional routes (Lufthansa Regional Partner), or in countries with restrictive government regulations (e.g. Italy, the US), First and Business Class passengers may be asked to check their second piece of hand luggage. On almost all Lufthansa Regional flights, you are given the opportunity to keep your carry-on baggage until boarding and hand it over directly before entering the aircraft. As baggage carts are positioned next to the aircraft stairs, you will receive your carry-on baggage directly at the aircraft upon disembarking.

In addition to the carry-on allowance , passengers may take the following items into the cabin:

• One personal item (e.g. women’s handbag, laptop case, shoulder bag) with a maximum size of 30 x 40 x 10 cm .
• A child’s car seat, carrycot, foldable pushchair, or baby buggy when traveling with a child (these items will be transported in the cargo hold if there is insufficient storage space in the cabin).
• Crutches or other orthopedic aids on which the passenger is dependent

Checked Baggage

Lufthansa may transport, free of charge, a certain amount of checked baggage (free baggage allowance) that may vary depending on your route, booking class, Miles & More status, etc. After you have received your boarding pass online or on your mobile, you can check your baggage conveniently at the Lufthansa baggage drop-off counter . If you are checking baggage at a conventional check-in counter , you should inform the Lufthansa employee that you have already checked in .

At Munich, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Geneva, and Vienna airports you can check bags included in your free baggage allowance , quickly and easily, at self-service baggage kiosks . The only requirement is to have your boarding pass and valid travel documents with you. The self-service baggage kiosk will print a self-adhesive baggage tag, which you must attach to your bag, as well as a receipt for your checked baggage .

Upon delivery of baggage to be checked, Lufthansa will make an appropriate entry on the ticket which act shall constitute the issue of the baggage check. Checked baggage must have your name or other personal identification affixed to it, but baggage tags that may be issued by Lufthansa are for identification purposes only. You will receive a part of the baggage tag as a receipt for your checked baggage. You should keep this until you have collected all your bags. Checked baggage will be carried on the same aircraft as you, whenever possible. If your checked baggage is carried on a subsequent flight, Lufthansa will deliver it to you, unless your presence is required for customs clearance by applicable law.

Free Baggage Allowance

Depending on the service class, free baggage allowances vary by the number of free bags allowed and the permitted weight of each bag. The maximum size per item must not exceed 158 cm (length + width + height). Fees will apply for bags that go over the free baggage allowance either in dimensions, weight, or number.

The following allowances apply on flights that have Lufthansa flight numbers and/or are exclusively operated by Lufthansa:

For Economy Class passengers , there are separate free baggage allowances with regard to the number and weight of baggage items, on certain routes or with particular products . For example, when flying from Canada to India via Europe or holding a Star Alliance Around-the-World ticket, Economy Class passengers may check free of charge 2 bags, each weighing up to 23 kg. On flights departing Brasil, Economy Class passengers have a free baggage allowance of 2 bags, each weighing up to 32 kg .

Excess Baggage Charges

For the 1st extra bag (up to 23 kg and 158 cm), Lufthansa offers attractive fees to Economy Class passengers traveling with the Economy Class Light fare :

• Online, up to two hours before departure: 15 EUR.
• At the Lufthansa ticket counter at the airport: 50 EUR.
• At the departure gate: 50 EUR.
• Online, up to two hours before departure: 25 EUR.
• On intercontinental flights – 60 EUR.

To/from the US, Mexico, Canada, and Central America (Belize, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Panama), Economy Class passengers can add a 2nd piece of baggage to the booking online for a EUR 80 fee or via the Lufthansa Service Center or at the Lufthansa service counter at the airport for a EUR 90 fee.

If your checked baggage exceeds the free baggage allowance, you can still take it with you upon payment of an excess baggage fee. Excess baggage fees are cumulative (e.g., an extra bag that is both oversized and overweight will be subject to a EUR 350 fee when traveling to/from Dubai.

Sporting Equipment

The first piece of ski/snowboarding equipment up to 2 m in length is free of charge (in addition to your free baggage allowance) except when traveling to/from the US, Mexico, and Central America (Belize, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Panama) or with an Economy Class Light ticket. However, the maximum weight of the first piece of ski or snowboarding equipment must be within the relevant free baggage limits of the respective booking class.

For standard sports equipment (e.g., first ski/snowboarding equipment on flights to/from the US, Mexico, additional ski/snowboarding equipment, water ski equipment, fishing equipment, bicycle, golf equipment, shortboards up to 2 m in length, etc.), Lufthansa charges the standard additional piece fee (exception – EUR 100 to/from Japan). When traveling on the Economy Light fare, you cannot take sports equipment (e.g. skis, snowboarding equipment, etc.) free of charge as your booked item of baggage or in addition to your booked item of baggage.

For bulky sports equipment (windsurfing equipment, longboard from 2 m to 3.15 m in length, tandem bicycle, hang glider, rubber dinghy, boat, horse riding gear, and pole vaulting equipment), Lufthansa charges the following fees:

If you are booking your flight online and want to take your sporting equipment with you, you must register your sporting equipment under your booking code by calling your local Lufthansa Service Center, preferably within 24 hours after you have made your online booking.

Baggage Service

If your baggage is missing or damaged, or items are missing from your baggage , you must report this immediately to the local Lufthansa baggage tracing desk or online so that an official report can be filed and you receive a written confirmation with a reference number. If you first notice items missing from your baggage or that your baggage is damaged at home or in a hotel, you must report it within 7 days after your flight . You must produce evidence that the damage occurred while the bag was in the care of Lufthansa. You can use the reference number to check the status of your baggage online .

Harmonizing the deadline for issuing excess baggage EMDs

(Update: October 2023)

 Are your customers traveling on Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Lufthansa, and SWISS with excess baggage? If so, please note that ancillary baggage EMDs for FBAG, MBAG, and SBAG must be issued 48 hours before departure at the latest.

Information on the change of Ancillary Baggage EMDs

(Update: September 2023)

In order to simplify the rebooking of PNRs with Ancillary Baggage EMDs, the Lufthansa Group airlines have changed the baggage EMDs (FBAG, MBAG, SBAG) in the GDS Amadeus to a ‘BTU/(Baggage Travel Unit, Bound)’ logic. Thus, instead of one EMD for the entire trip, a separate baggage EMD will now be issued per flight route.

Example: HAM–FRA–MAD–FRA–HAM

• Previously: one EMD for the entire trip
• New: two separate EMDs (one EMD for HAM–FRA–MAD and one EMD for MAD–FRA–HAM)
• The change will be automatically reflected in all Ancillary Baggage EMDs issued via the GDS Amadeus (1A) by a travel agency or the Lufthansa Group’s own distribution channels.
• The switch in NDC (Lufthansa Group airlines Direct NDC API and SPRK) will be completed by the end of November 2023
• Other reservation systems are partly already offering the possibility to price according to BTU logic or are planning the switch. If this is not the case, you can continue to issue one EMD per trip for additional baggage and reissue it, if necessary, unless the reservation system used offers another option. These EMDs will continue to be accepted by the Lufthansa Group airlines

Sports equipment 

If the sport baggage does not exceed the baggage allowance no extra charge applies, but if the sports equipment exceeds the free baggage allowance in number of items or weight per item, passenger will be charged an extra fee.

Sports equipment that exceeds the free baggage allowance and the weight limit of the respective travel class, but does not exceed the maximum weight of 32 kg, will be charged in accordance with the rates for sports equipment. For items of sports equipment not included in the following list or for content exceeding the definition given, the fees for excess baggage will apply.

With the summer holidays just around the corner, it's time to start thinking about your luggage and the restrictions you might have with your airline. In this blog, we have decided to help those flying with Lufthansa Airlines this summer and answer that popular question of what is Lufthansa baggage allowance? Lufthansa baggage allowance and Lufthansa baggage dimension restrictions for cabin bags differ depending on different factors, including route, travel class and fare, so we have the answers below.

Lufthansa Hand Luggage

When flying with Lufthansa Airlines, each traveller gets at least one item of carry-on luggage which can weigh up to but no more than 8kg. However, if you are travelling either Business Class or First Class, you can bring extra carry-on baggage with Lufthansa Airlines, a total of 2 carry-on baggage items. All carry-on baggage bags must also meet the set Lufthansa carry-on size dimension restrictions, which are max. 50 x 40 x 23 cm. 

Each traveller can also carry a small item of baggage, such as a handbag or laptop bag, on board if they adhere to the dimension restrictions of 30 x 40 x 10cm.

Can I add extra baggage after booking with Lufthansa?

Does Lufthansa's economy include baggage?

For a charge, you can reserve one piece of luggage per journey weighing up to 23kg if you are travelling ‘Economy Class Light’. Even if there is a connection, the outgoing and return flights count as one journey.

How much is excess baggage on Lufthansa?

Lufthansa Checked and Carry-On Allowances

While Lufthansa’s checked and carry-on policies are pretty fair and standard, they can be a bit confusing because they can be influenced by many different factors. Your fare type and route, for example, can affect the number of checked and carry-on bags that are included with your flight, as well as baggage weight allowances. With this in mind, if you’re ever in doubt as to the specific allowances for your ticket, your best bet is to contact the airline directly for clarification.

Checked Bag Allowances and Fees

Lufthansa offers four different fare types, and the amount of luggage included with your ticket will vary depending on the fare you book and your route. For European flights, fare options include Economy Light (no free checked bags included), Economy Classic (one free checked bag weighing up to 50 pounds or 23kg), Economy Flex (one free checked bag weighing up to 50 pounds or 23kg), and Business Class (two free bags weighing up to 70 pounds or 32kg each).

For all other routes, fare options include Economy, Premium Economy, Business, and First Class. Economy Class fares are entitled to one free checked bag weighing up to 50 pounds or 23kg. Premium Economy tickets include two free checked bags weighing 50 pounds (32kg) apiece, and First Class fares include three free checked bags at a maximum of 70 pounds (32kg) each. Also, please make sure you follow all TSA rules when you pack!

Carry-On Allowances and Fees

Carry-on allowances for Lufthansa passengers can also vary based on fare. All ticketed passengers, regardless of fare, are entitled to a minimum of one free personal item and one free standard carry-on. Personal items are subject to a size limit of no larger than 30cm x 40cm x 10cm (approximately 11.8″ x 15.7″ x 3.9″), whereas standard bags should measure no larger than 55cm x 40cm x 23cm (approximately 21.7″ x 15.7″ x 9″).

Economy and Premium Economy fares are permitted one standard carry-on bag with a weight limit of up to 17.6 pounds (8kg), whereas Business and First Class fares are entitled to two standard carry-ons of the same size and weight.

For European fares, all tickets with the exception of Business Class receive one free standard carry-on, with Business Class receiving two standard bags.

What About Infants, Strollers, and Baby Gear?

Children under the age of two are not required to have their own tickets and may travel as lap infants. If you’ll be traveling with a lap infant, you are permitted one additional carry-on bag, so long as it doesn’t exceed 50 pounds (23kg), such as a diaper bag or breast pump. A small, folding stroller and/or car seat can also be brought aboard the plane at no additional fee, and larger strollers can be checked free of charge at the gate.

Economy light, the basic fare for long-haul flights.

Travel lighter and save: if you are flying with carry-on baggage only and don’t require any ticket flexibility, you can enjoy a great-value trip on our Economy Light fare. Apart from one item of carry-on baggage, the Light fare has no free-baggage allowance. However, you can add one piece of checked baggage to your booking for a fee. Meals and beverages on board are still free of charge.

A preferred seat can be added to your booking up to 52 hours before departure.

On the Economy Light fare you can book an additional first piece of baggage for a fee. Please note that this is not refundable.

You can check your free baggage allowance in just a few steps with our baggage calculator – based on route, travel class and fare. There you can also find the prices and dimensions for additional pieces of baggage.

For flights with our partners United Airlines and Air Canada, you can only purchase checked baggage at the airport.

For HON Circle Members, Senators and Star Alliance Gold customers on intercontinental flights, the first item of baggage on the Economy Light fare is free of charge and can only be declared at the check-in counter. If the first item of baggage on the Economy Light fare is booked online, at the Service Center or via a travel agency, corresponding charges will apply.

Which destinations does the Economy Light fare apply to?

The Economy Light fare is available on many long-haul flights. Please note that the fare is only available for journeys which start or end in a country to which Lufthansa flies.

The fare applies to flights with:

• Journey start in Europe and a destination in Africa (except for Angola, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria and Tanzania), Asia (except for China, Japan and Singapore), the Middle East, North America and South America.
• Journey start in Africa (except for Angola, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mauritius, Nigeria and Tanzania), Asia (except for China, Japan, Korea and Singapore), Canada, the Middle East (except for Iran), North America, South America and a destination in Europe.

Is the Economy Light fare available in all classes on long-haul flights?

Initially, the Economy Light fare will only be available in selected booking classes. If these booking classes are no longer available, the Economy Standard fare can still be booked.

Is it possible to upgrade using Miles & More miles?

A mileage upgrade is not possible in booking classes K, L and T.

Can the Economy Light fare on long-haul flights be combined with European fares?

European fares cannot be combined with the Economy Light fare on long-haul flights. For connecting flights within Europe, the Economy Light or Standard fare can be booked.

Which extra services and amenities can be booked?

You can book the following additional services on the Light fare very easily.

You can also book all the additional options directly online.

For flights with our partner airlines United and Air Canada, you can only pay for checked baggage at the airport. If you wish to check in a larger, heavier or wider baggage item, the Economy Light fare is subject to the flat fees for excess baggage.

Is it possible to take sports baggage free of charge?

If you are travelling on the Economy Light fare, you cannot take any sports baggage free of charge as your booked item of baggage or in addition to your booked item of baggage.

Can a buggy or child seat be taken as checked baggage free of charge?

Suitable car seats, baby baskets or foldable pushchairs may be brought on board as carry-on baggage free of charge (pushchairs will be transported in the hold).
