What you need to know before your trail

Nobel Prize-winning scientist Sarah Collier has started to show the same tell-tale signs of Alzheimer’s disease as her father: memory loss, even blackouts. So she is reluctant to accept the invitation to be the guest of honour at a prestigious biotech conference – until her husband Daniel, a neuroscientist, persuades her that the publicity storm will be worth it. The technology being unveiled at this conference could revolutionise medicine forever. More than that, it could save Sarah’s life.

In Geneva, the couple are feted as stars – at least, Sarah is. But behind the five-star luxury, investors are circling, controversial blogger Terri Landau is all over the story, and Sarah’s symptoms are getting worse. As events begin to spiral out of control, Sarah can’t be sure who to trust – including herself.

Travel Guide

This reads like a film and you get to see and explore quite a bit of Geneva and the surrounding area. It’s all remote mountains and stunning lakes but with hidden danger just around the twisting roads.

Lake Geneva is at the heart of the city and around it we see the wealth and the rich streets which lead out to the Schiller Institute. It’s not far from the centre but in a world of its own, all constructed like a glass palace, a cage of sorts on the outskirts – hidden away from the world.

What happens here however could very well change the world….

There are snippets of the novel set in London but they are backstory – one of the Doctors works at Great Ormond Street for example. London is not on the map as this novel is all about GENEVA!

My book review of ' Geneva ' by Richard Armitage

geneva book tour richard armitage

Engaging characters, authentic setting, twists and turns in a compelling plot. Loved it...

Before I say any more, though, I should mention that the backbone for this plot is Alzheimer's. Sarah's father has the disease and she has just received a shocking diagnosis herself. But a big pharmaceutical company believes they may have found a cure.

The subject is handled sensitively and quite objectively. The focus is on the medical and scientific community, and business, rather than the effects of the disease, so even though I realise it is a difficult subject to read as 'entertainment', the author handles it well, I think.

So Sarah has been persuaded by her husband to go to Geneva for the big launch of the new drug. She had earlier won a Nobel Prize so the pharmaceutical company is keen to have her endorsement for the product. But she needs to keep her recent diagnosis secret, and she also wants to check the drug is all it is claimed to be.

The couple travel to Switzerland where they face the fact that Sarah's symptoms are getting worse and, with big money attracted to the big discovery, it's clear not everyone is to be trusted.

The story is told through four perspectives, each one compelling and authentic. Much of the 'action' takes place in the hotel of the conference centre in Geneva, but there's a brilliant account of a day's skiing on the nearby slopes...! This was a great read and I can't wait to see what Richard Armitage writes next. Oh, and I think there are plans for this to be a film?!

"An outstanding debut - ingenious, fast-paced and unpredictable." (Harlan Coben)

"Geneva is one of the best thrillers I've ever read. And I've read quite a few." (A J Finn)

How far would you go for someone you love?

Nobel Prize-winning scientist Sarah Collier has taken a step back from work to spend more time with her family. Movie nights with her husband Daniel and their daughter Maddie are a welcome respite from the scrutiny of the world’s press. As much as it hurts, it’s good to be able to see her father more too. He’s suffering from Alzheimer’s and needs special care.

Sarah has started to show tell-tale signs of the disease too. She’s been experiencing blackouts and memory loss. It’s early days but she must face the possibility that she won’t be there to see her daughter grow up. Daniel, a neuroscientist himself, is doing his best to be supportive but she already knows that she will have to be the strong one. For all of them.

So when Sarah is invited to be the guest of honour at a prestigious biotech conference in Geneva she declines, wanting to stay out of the public eye – that is until Daniel shows her the kind of work that the enigmatic Mauritz Schiller has been developing.

Flown first class to the spectacular alpine city and housed in a luxury hotel, Sarah and Daniel are thrust back into the spotlight. As they try to shut out the noise of the public media storm, in private Sarah is struggling with her escalating symptoms. And the true extent of what Schiller has achieved is a revelation. This is technology that could change medicine forever. More than that, it could save Sarah’s life.

But technology so valuable attracts all kinds of interest. Wealthy investors are circling, controversial blogger Terri Landau is all over the story, and someone close to Schiller seems bent on taking advantage of the situation for themselves. Sarah feels threatened and does not know who to trust – including herself. Far from being her lifeline Schiller's technology may be her undoing.

As events spiral out of control Sarah and Daniel are faced with the ultimate question: how far would you go for someone you love?

An unmissable debut thriller written and narrated by Richard Armitage, co-narrated by Nicola Walker and Jane Perry.

This book contains scenes pertaining to dementia that some listeners may find distressing.

Featured Article: Best of the Year—The 15 Best Mysteries and Thrillers of 2022

This year was an amazingly fruitful one for mysteries and thrillers. As we tried to narrow this list down, a popular refrain among editors was: "Don’t forget this, don’t forget that, and what about this?" Some of us liked when the twists and turns began within the first few minutes, while others were happy to go on the rocky, thrilling rides the genre provides with a little guessing along the way. But we’re sure about one thing—this list is simply the best.

Well done, Mr. Armitage!

Thrilled that my hands-down favorite Audible narrator and one of my absolute favorite actors wrote a book, and that it’s such a great yarn! I finished it within two days—couldn’t stop listening. I also adore Nicola Walker—so glad she could be a part of this project. Congratulations, Mr. Armitage, on your new endeavor as an author. Hope to “read” more from you in the future.

Richard Armitage Proves He Can Do Anything!

Richard Armitage's debut novel is gripping, intense, fast-paced, and intriguing. Every time I thought I knew what was going on, Mr. Armitage threw me for a loop and kept me guessing. What I guessed was more fine-tuned into Science Fiction, but the finesse with which he mislead his readers at every turn until the truth could finally be revealed was masterful. And much more scary considering it's within the realm of possibility. If you haven't started it yet or you are at any point in this engrossing thriller, be prepared for a roller coaster ride of hairpin turns and twists. The narration perfectly executed by Richard Armitage and Nicola Walker is nothing short of brilliant and I found myself completely immersed in a world of love, betrayal, and dark dealings where it’s nearly impossible to know who to trust, and loyalties are tested, and retested. Who is Sarah Collier? Some days, even she doesn't know. But one day soon, she is going to have to remember. And, hopefully, that day won't be too late for everything and everyone she loves. Richard Armitage's "Geneva" is one story you'll find hard to put down until its explosive, clever, and satisfying conclusion.

In general, a good tale.

I, often, refrain from writing reviews - simply, because I feel as though it's judgmental as a whole - but (yep, me, Judgie McJudgerson lol) this one was great. Had I not thought so, I honestly, wouldn't have written a review, at all. Armitage, I believe, is more well-known as a narrator. This debut novel also gives him solid foothold in writing, as well. Great storyline (if you don't critique it) and awesome finish. Made my jaw drop towards the end. Recommended.

Fast passed and suspenseful

A very enjoyable first writing attempt. The author makes you love and hate the right characters. I found the story interesting. Very engaging, set against the beautiful backdrop of the Alps and the city of Geneva. Nicola Walker was brilliant as Sarah. Richard Armitage, as always great as the underwhelming, weak personality of Daniel. I know I'll listen to it again in the future.

Richard Armitage

Audible Original

8 hours 54 mins

Released October 22, 2022

Geneva is a gripping medical/psychological/techno-thriller about a brilliant scientist facing a devastating diagnosis, who has been picked to be the face of a game-changing new therapy. We listened to it as an Audible Original audiobook, narrated in part by the author, actor Richard Armitage. While it relies on tropes that have been done to death in recent years, so the twists were not as surprising as they should’ve been, and it was totally implausible medically, I still enjoyed it as an exciting story with an intriguing premise.

Inside Red Eye star Richard Armitage’s private life after speaking about sexuality

Richard Armitage

Richard Armitage has become one of the UK’s biggest acting talents and now he’s put them to work on the latest ITV drama Red Eye .

In the six-parter, Richard, 52, plays Doctor Matthew Nolan who is accused of murdering a woman in Beijing. He is told the claims after touching down in London and informed he is heading straight back to the destination he came from to address the allegations.

To ensure he makes it back to the Chinese city he is assigned an officer, Hana Li, played by Jing Lusi, who wants nothing to do with him due to the accused crime.

As the flight takes off it becomes clear that there is more going on than either of them initially realised, and they are forced to work together.

Teasing what to expect, Richard told Metro.co.uk : ‘When I read the script I was hoping it was going in a certain direction but thought it might be too expensive to produce.

‘It actually goes bigger than my imagination. It moves outside the plane and into politics, which really excited me.’

JING LUSI as DC Hana Li and RICHARD ARMITAGE as Dr Matthew Nolan

As we prepare to watch Richard’s next project, what do we know about the actor’s life away from the camera?

Does Richard Armitage have a partner? His love life revealed

Richard spoke about his sexuality for the first time publicly last year. ‘[Coming out] happened when I was 19 – to anybody who mattered – and I was always waiting for that question to punch me in the face, and it never did,’ he told  the Radio Times .

‘I thought, “Are people being polite, or is it that they don’t want to know?”‘

Richard Armitage

He added: ‘That was always a thing, if I declare who I am and my sexuality, then I’m saying it’s fixed and I don’t know that, or if I might feel something for somebody further down the line. I doubt it, but I don’t know.’

Richard also spoke about not wishing to define himself.

‘I love the idea that whatever gender, sexuality, the fluidity of who you love, how you identify, is not fixed,’ he said.

‘That was always a thing: if I declare who I am and my sexuality, then I’m saying it’s fixed and I don’t know that, or if I might feel something for somebody further down the line. I doubt it, but I don’t know.’

While promoting his Netflix series Obsession , he briefly mentioned having a male partner, and revealed that they discussed the TV series’ sex scenes.

‘We did talk about it. I reassured him that it was all going to be fine, and we were being well looked after,’ he told the Evening Standard . He has not publicly shared who the person is that he’s in a relationship with.

Richard Armitage’s secret side hustle away from movies and TV

Michelle Keegan, Richard Armitage

Since the 1990s, when Richard played a love interest for Dawn French’s character Geraldine Granger in Vicar of Dibley, he has worked consistently with standout parts in the international franchise The Hobbit, Star Wars, and all the recent Harlan Coben book adaptations including Fool Me Once .

Away from TV, Richard lends his voice to audiobooks and described it as his ‘main source of income’ in an interview with Metro.co.uk .

‘It’s been my main source of occupation since lockdown. I love sitting down with a microphone and starting from page one. Some are challenging, quite intellectual and difficult to read but others are a dream and fly off the page,’ he revealed in 2020.

‘I’ve done over 30 now – crime, thrillers, Jeffrey Archer, Ken Follett. I really enjoy it – and I’ve done another seven since lockdown. I did four Agatha Christies at the start of lockdown and I’ve built my own studio at home.’

As well as narrating books, he’s written one himself called Geneva. The thriller released last year is centred on Nobel Prize-winning scientist Sarah Collier, who has started to show tell-tale signs of Alzheimer’s disease. She is therefore reluctant to be the guest of honour at a prestigious biotech conference but is convinced by her husband Daniel.

Geneva by Richard Armitage

‘In Geneva, the couple are feted as stars – at least, Sarah is. But behind the five-star luxury, investors are circling, controversial blogger Terri Landau is all over the story, and Sarah’s symptoms are getting worse. As events begin to spiral out of control, Sarah can’t be sure who to trust – including herself,’ the bio teases.

We may see him translate it from book to screen one day, as this is now where Richard’s interest is increasingly beginning to lean towards.

‘My desire to be in front of the camera is diminishing,’ Richard shared. He instead has a strong pull to instead be behind it – writing and producing.

‘That’s the stuff I’m more interested in now. I want to come in at an earlier stage to shape stories. I’ve grown up.’

How tall is Richard Armitage?

Richard Armitage in Red Eye

Many of Richard’s scenes in Red Eye were shot on a plane. Although he was ‘prepared to hate being trapped’ he ended up enjoying the experience.

‘The claustrophobia added to the tension of the story, and we all appreciated that. It was a pressure cooker and totally thrilling,’ he recalled.

However, there was one downside due to his height. ‘It was tricky because I’m big, I’m 6ft2 so I was smacking my head on the wall and the door a few times.’

Red Eye is on ITV1 and ITVX from April   21
