Environmental Impact

Overall, the Nyandungu Urban Wetland Ecotourism Project (NUWEP) advanced the restoration of Nyandungu degraded area, restored biodiversity by introducing native tree species, and restored terrestrial and aquatic habitat.

The Nyandungu wetland complex covers an area of 121.7 hectares that has been restored. The restoration of Nyandungu wetland highlights the management techniques and green technologies that can be used in Rwanda’s secondary cities, therefore demonstrating its scalability as a model for other wetlands and increasing its potential legacy.

NUWEP transformed Nyandungu wetland into a recreational park as outlined in the City of Kigali Master Plan and shows that wetland conservation can have economic, social, and environmental benefits to the inhabitants of Kigali, Rwanda, and visiting tourists.

The park itself not only demonstrates that native and indigenous trees as well as vegetation support greater biodiversity than exotic species, it also demonstrate that biodiversity conservation can generate revenues whether be to local communities and the country in general.

Sustainable Development

The Nyandungu Urban Wetland Ecotourism Project improved the livelihoods of local communities by creating approximately 4,000 green jobs for local communities. It also restored habitat including a fig forest of native species, restored the wetland itself for sustainable use, and rehabilitated streams and ponds for flood alleviation of wetlands and the reed-bed for pollution abatement of wetlands.

Further, the project set up a network of paths, roads, toilets, nature-viewing areas, picnic areas, an information center that explains the role of wetlands in conservation and the ecosystem services they provide, as well as a restaurant that serves tourists and every person visiting the recreational park which also serve as an educational and research center for students and researchers thanks to its rich biodiversity.

The Nyandungu Urban Wetland Ecotourism Project also curbs flooding in the wetland itself and surrounding areas.

Benches and signage will be installed

An information center, a restaurant, lavatories, a maintenance house, 2 gates with green power (solar power lighting) and sewage treatment systems will be constructed, 1100m road and 2 parking lots will be constructed, 8574 m of walkways & bicycle lanes will be constructed, 5 catchment ponds, 3 recreational ponds and drainage channels will be constructed, filtration plants to allow water to spread will be planted, the stream crossing the wetland will be rehabilitated, 17,00 trees including 55 indigenous trees, 3 lawns, a medicinal garden and a pope’s garden will be planted.

Nyandungu

From a degraded wetland to an educational and recreational eco-park in the heart of Rwanda’s capital city, Nyandungu is now open to the public.

  • The restoration of the Nyandungu wetland and creation of an eco-tourism park saw the planting of 17,000 trees made up of 55 indigenous species.
  • The 121 hectare park features a medicinal garden, a Pope’s Garden, five catchment ponds, three recreation ponds, an information centre, a restaurant as well as 10km of walkways and bike lanes.
  • The park will open on 8 July 2022 from 6am to 6pm, seven days a week.

On behalf of the Government of Rwanda, the Rwanda Environment Management Authority and the Rwanda Development Board and have signed an agreement with QA Venue Solutions to open and manage Nyandungu Eco-Park. The opening of Nyandungu Eco-Park represents the single largest addition to public green space in Kigali in the city’s history.

Speaking about the park, Juliet Kabera, Director General of the Rwanda Environment Management Authority, said the Nyandungu wetland represents the value of restoring urban ecosystems, and will serve as a blueprint for other wetlands in Kigali and across the country.

“Urban wetlands play a critical role in preventing flooding, addressing pollution and are home to unique biodiversity. As we face the impacts of climate change, wetlands will be a key ally to protect lives and livelihoods. We look forward to working with our partners to replicate the success of restoring Nyandungu in other urban wetlands in Kigali and across the country,” she said.

The Nyandungu Eco-Park provides a space for residents and visitors to the city to explore and learn from nature, and is part of Rwanda’s efforts to harness eco-tourism to restore biodiversity and conserve urban wetland ecosystems.

The restoration of the wetland and creation of an eco-tourism park was funded by the Rwanda Green Fund (FONERWA) with support from the UK Government, the Italian Government through the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the UN Environment Programme.

The six-year initiative has restored the Nyandungu wetland ecosystem and promoted the sustainable management of natural resources. The initiative has also created approximately 4,000 green jobs.

The rapid growth of Kigali and the associated human activities have put significant pressure on the wetlands. Wetlands, including Nyandungu, have been degraded and this led to biodiversity loss. Encroachment has also resulted in downstream flooding as well as increased pollution due sewage outflows.

In 2016, the Government of Rwanda through the Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA) developed the Nyandungu restoration project to respond to these challenges and demonstrate the potential of wetlands to abate pollution and reduce the risk of flooding in urban areas.

Since then, the Rwf 4.5 billion project has restored critical habitats, including a native fig forest and the wetland itself, and rehabilitated streams and ponds to alleviate floods and reed-beds to reduce pollution.

The wetland now also features a 10km network of walking and cycling paths, viewing areas, picnic areas, an information centre, and a restaurant among other facilities.

“The restoration of Nyandungu wetland to an eco-tourism park serves as an example of Rwanda’s efforts and commitment towards environmental protection, particularly for the conservation of wetland ecosystems as well as eco-tourism. We look forward to welcoming domestic and international tourists to create fond memories in this new biodiversity hotspot in Kigali,” said Zephanie Niyonkuru, Deputy CEO of the Rwanda Development Board.

“Investing in nature is the best investment we can make. By protecting and restoring our ecosystems, we create jobs, improve people’s well-being and build community resilience to climate change and extreme weather events. The Fund is grateful for the support provided by our partners in the rehabilitation of the Nyandungu wetland, and we look forward to the many environmental and health benefits it will bring for generations to come,” said Teddy Mugabo, CEO of the Rwanda Green Fund (FONERWA).

The Nyandungu Eco-Park is the first public recreational and touristic facility of its kind in Kigali. The park will be managed by QA Venue Solutions through a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Rwanda. QA Venue Solutions, which also operates BK Arena, will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the park and offer guided tours to visitors and its attractions.

“QA Venue Solutions is excited to take on the opportunity of managing Nyandungu Eco-Park in partnership with the Government of Rwanda, and believes in the agenda of protecting and restoring the wetlands. Our aim through this partnership is to work side by side with the government to achieve the objectives set out for the Nyandungu wetland, while preserving the space and allowing for the community to benefit from it through educational and recreational activities,” said Kyle Schofield, Managing Director, QA Venue Solutions.

The park will be open from 8 July 2022 and will welcome visitors seven days a week from 6am-6pm. Follow QA Venue Solutions on social media for more information on visiting the park.

Nyandungu Wetland Eco-park

The creation of Nyandungu Wetland Eco-Tourism Park is part of Rwanda’s efforts to restore and conserve ecosystems while promoting social-economic development. The Rwandese capital, Kigali, experiences regular flooding during rainstorms, due to the runoff from the surrounding urbanized hills, with the stormwater concentrating at the valley bottom in former wetlands. These floods cause disruption to traffic, preventing all travel between hillside communities. In order to address stringent issues, the focus turned on the wetlands surrounding the capital of the country. One of these wetlands is the Nyandungu wetland, which has suffered a lot of land use changes over the years, including agricultural activities, pasturing, cattle farms, sand mining, and wetland reclamation. From a climate change point of view, the project aims to address problems related with flooding and sustained base-flows in rivers. From a biodiversity point of view, the project aims to enhance biodiversity conservation. The main goal is the reconstruction of the Nyandungu Wetland Eco-Park with green infrastructure and services strategies for green energy, saving and recycling water, use of local and natural materials as well as architectural designs that maximize natural lighting and ventilation. Nyandungu Eco-Park: New Tourist Attraction in Kigali

nyandungu urban wetland eco tourism park

From a degraded wetland to an educational and recreational eco-park in the heart of the Rwandan capital, Kigali Nyandungu opened to the public early July 2022.

By George Kalisa

Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA) and Rwanda Development Board (RDB) July 7 signed an agreement with QA Venue Solutions to open and manage Nyandungu Eco-Park. The opening of Nyandungu Eco-Park represents the single largest addition to public green space in Kigali city’s history.

Juliet Kabera, REMA’s DG said Nyandungu wetland represents the value of restoring urban ecosystems, and will serve as a blueprint for other wetlands in Kigali and country.

“Urban wetlands play a critical role in preventing flooding, addressing pollution and are home to unique biodiversity. As we face impacts of climate change, wetlands will be a key ally to protect lives and livelihoods. We look forward to working with partners to replicate success of restoring Nyandungu in other urban wetlands in Kigali and country.”

The Nyandungu Eco-Park provides a space for residents and visitors to the city to explore and learn from nature, and is part of Rwanda’s efforts to harness eco-tourism to restore biodiversity and conserve urban wetland ecosystems.

Rwanda Green Fund (FONERWA) with support from UK and Italian Govts through the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the UN Environment Programme funded the Rwf 4.5bn project.

The 6-yr initiative restored Nyandungu wetland ecosystem and promoted sustainable management of natural resources. The initiative has also created approx. 4,000 green jobs.

“The restoration of Nyandungu wetland to an eco-tourism park serves as example of Rwanda’s efforts and commitment towards environmental protection, particularly for conservation of wetland ecosystems as well as eco-tourism. We look forward to welcoming domestic and international tourists to create fond memories in this biodiversity hotspot in Kigali,” said Zephanie Niyonkuru, Deputy CEO, RDB.

“Investing in nature is the best investment we can make. By protecting and restoring our ecosystems, we create jobs, improve people’s well-being and build community resilience to climate change and extreme weather events. The Fund is grateful for the support provided by our partners in the rehabilitation of the Nyandungu wetland, and we look forward to the many environmental and health benefits it will bring for generations to come,” said Teddy Mugabo, CEO, FONERWA.

The facility is the first public recreational and touristic facility of its kind in Kigali, managed by QA Venue Solutions through an MoU with the GoR. QA Venue Solutions also operates BK Arena is responsible for day-to-day management and offer guided tours.

“QA Venue Solutions is excited to take on the opportunity of managing Nyandungu Eco-Park in partnership with the GoR, and believes in the agenda of protecting and restoring the wetlands. Our aim is to work side by side with government to achieve objectives set out for Nyandungu wetland, while preserving space and allowing community to benefit through educational and recreational activities,” said Kyle Schofield, MD, QA Venue Solutions.

Restoration of the Nyandungu wetland and creation of an eco-tourism park saw the planting of 17,000 trees made up of 55 indigenous species. 121-ha Park features a medicinal garden, a Pope’s Garden, five catchment ponds, three recreation ponds, an information centre, a restaurant as well as 10km of walkways and bike lanes.

Africa-Press – Rwanda. Nyandungu Urban Wetland Eco-Tourism Park is nestled in the valley between Kimironko and Masoro-Bumbogo hill in Ndera sector, separating the districts of Gasabo and Kicukiro. The recently completed park sits on 120 hectares of surface area.

Over the years, the highly degraded wetland was being used for different activities including agriculture and sand mining among other human activities, which were greatly affecting the ecosystem and thereby posing serious danger for surrounding livelihoods.

But in 2016, the government embarked on the sustainable management of the natural resources in the wetland, as part of its efforts to preserve ecosystem and diversity. Over Rwf6billion has so far been invested in revamping this park.

Stepping into the park, you are first welcomed by well-built gates and pavements made up of natural stones at all entrances. Close by is the information centre where the visitor is taken through the different sections of the park.

You are then welcomed by a medicinal garden which showcases indigenous and native plants that have been found to possess medicinal value. Next, is the Papal Garden, whose name is derived from the historic visit by Pope John Paul II to Rwanda in 1990.

During his visit 30 years ago, it is at the same place that the Pope read his homily to Rwandans. It was at the time one of the largest open spaces in Kigali that could accommodate large crowds of people who had attended the religious ceremony.

One of magnificent artificial ponds created in the park.

In the park, The New Times also observed various water ponds located in the park named after different lakes in Rwanda including Muhazi, Kivu, Ruhondo and Ihema which provide a comfortable place for visitors to take a health break amidst the serene natural environment.

The park is laden with different tree species which according to environmentalists, play a key role in minimizing floods which have been prevalent in the area.

The diversity in species in the park, conservationists say, will also be vital for the academia who may go there to study different species available in the park. Since the conservation works to restore the area started, birdlife and diverse butterfly species have started thriving again in the wetland.

Nyandungu cafe resto will provide snacks and refreshments to the visitors.

Cranes and other bird species are increasing in the wetland and according to the park management, the site is currently home to more than 70 species of birds.

The fig forest around the park also provides shade for the walkways stretching over eight kilometres and dedicated cycling paths that helps one to easily navigate the diverse park.

This means that the visitor can walk, jog or cycle while enjoying the serenity of natural environment. There are also benches on which visitors can rest and interact as they breathe in the spectacularly clean air.

A café resto has also been built in the area to provide snacks and refreshments to the users of the park. The park was developed by Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA) in collaboration with different stakeholders.

In an interview with The New Times, Juliette Kabera, the Director General of REMA, she said that the completion of this park is a symbol that conservation of the ecosystem does require more will than efforts.

“Before renovating the area, it was a very dry environment, full of waste coming from the surrounding hills, but rehabilitating these streams, network of walkways, and picnic areas is a symbol that we are able to revive the ecosystem and conserve our own resources,” she said.

Basil Karimba, the Managing Director of Afrilandscapes, a landscaping company that developed the area, highlights some of the expected impacts of the park in the local community.

“Being in the area, it will support livelihood diversification and enhance income for local communities as well as providing education and research opportunities for the visitors,” he said.

When The New Times visited the area, groups of young visitors were touring the park. They highlighted that they had never seen a park with this beauty anywhere else.

“Honestly, I didn’t expect such a wonderful place like this before, with this fresh air that differentiates it from other places, it is a very suitable place to visit for relaxation,” said Tufaha Uwihoreye, a park visitor.

“This really proves the beauty of Rwanda that promotes tourism,” she added. The park will be open to the public on December 1.

The new park adds to Imbuga City Walk located in the Central Business District and Kigali Cultural Village on Rebero Hill among other recreational facilities.

Nyandungu Wetland Eco-Park

At a glance.

The Nyangdungu Wetland Eco-Park will not only provide social and economic benefits to the communities but also supported innovative approaches to restore and conserve wetland ecosystems on about 134 Ha, promote the sustainable management of natural resources and support livelihood diversification to enhance incomes for local communities. This newly constructed Wetland Eco-Park also responds to Green Economy in the EDPRS II and one of the aspirations of the Vision 2050 of developing green cities.

The abundant vegetation in urban wetlands, acts as a filter for domestic and industrial waste and this contributes to improving water quality. Urban wetlands supply cities with water and are green spaces for recreation which helps to promote human wellbeing. To address this issue, the government of Rwanda has completed the construction of the Nyandungu Wetland Eco-Park that will  improve the ecological functioning, aesthetics and recreational potential of the wetland areas of Nyandungu in Kigali City.

Recognizing the importance of native tree species in terms of enhancing biodiversity and species richness, and the lack of of knowledge on how to propagate those indigenous species, the new Eco-Park was an opportunity to rehabilitate wetlands with indigenous species.

PHOTOS: Nearly 200 bird species return to restored Nyandungu eco-park

Nearly 200 bird species that had migrated due to wetland degradation have returned to Nyandungu Wetland Eco-tourism Park after its rehabilitation, City of Kigali Mayor, Pudence Rubingisa said.

He was speaking during the official opening of a five-day conference convening politicians, researchers, urban planners and designers, environmentalists, academics, government officials, and advocates from 40 countries to share the latest research, innovative ideas, and initiatives aimed at creating walkable streets and public spaces.

The theme of the conference, “Action for Walking” resonates deeply with the vision for Kigali and mirrors its dedication to creating urban spaces that prioritise the well-being of citizens and the environment, he said. Nyandungu Wetland has been restored and turned into a public space.

“Urban planning needs to be inclusive and responsive to the needs of local communities. Urban dwellers need facilities such as the restored Nyandungu Wetland serving as a public space to promote both walking, recreational activities, tourism and environmental conservation.

“Nyandungu public space has bicycle lanes, walkable streets for pedestrians, and tree species attracting fresh air. About 200 birds that had migrated due to degradation have returned,” he said.

In 2016, the Government of Rwanda through the Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA) developed the Nyandungu restoration project to also abate pollution and reduce the risk of flooding in urban areas.

The Rwf4.5 billion project has restored critical habitats, including a native fig forest and the wetland itself, and rehabilitated streams and ponds to alleviate floods and reed beds to reduce pollution.

Several species have been introduced including medicinal, cultural, and ornamental plants since the restoration project started.

The 120-hectare park (70 hectares of wetland and 50 hectares of forest) features a medicinal garden, a Pope’s garden, five catchment ponds, three recreation ponds, an information centre, a restaurant, 10km network of walkways and bike lanes, viewing areas, picnic areas, and others.

The restoration of the Nyandungu wetland and the creation of an eco-tourism park saw the planting of 17,000 trees made up of 55 indigenous species. The initiative also created approximately 4,000 green jobs. The public scape was opened for visitors in 2022.

Five more recreational wetlands in the pipeline

Rubingisa told the media that there are other five wetlands that will be soon rehabilitated for conservation and public space purposes in the City of Kigali.

ALSO READ:   Rwanda secures $15 million to rehabilitate 400 hectares of wetlands in Kigali

“We are looking at the city in the next 30 years considering that 70 per cent of Rwandans will be living in urban areas or cities. People need to go to other public spaces such as car-free zones for recreational activities, sports without using cars,” he said.

The surface area of wetlands in Kigali decreased from 100 square kilometres to 77 square kilometres. The wetlands recommended for rehabilitation in Kigali City are 15 square kilometres.

Those recommended for sustainable use make 29 per cent, those for conservation make 38 per cent and the rest are recommended for recreation, according to the Ministry of Environment.

Five wetlands on over 470 hectares could also be used as recreational public spaces.

Bronwen Thornton, CEO of Walk21 Foundation which is promoting walking also made the case for public spaces.

“Cities need safe spaces, sidewalks that protect people who are walking. We also need good public spaces. We need car-free zones,” she said.

Need to increase walking and cycling

Rubingisa said   Kigali’s investment in pedestrian infrastructure, dedicated bike lanes and green spaces, has resulted in a city where walking is not merely a necessity but a pleasure for all the citizens.

“Our ultimate goal is to increase walking for pedestrians and bicycle riding as means of transport in the near future as we reduce the motorised means,” he said.

He said the conference is an opportunity to share experiences, exchange ideas, and foster innovative solutions.

“Non-motorised transport also means cycling infrastructure. That is critical. Many people do not own cars. Some of them can earn their living by cycling. There are also electric bicycles that need to be used on our roads to green our transport,” said Alphonse Nkurunziza, a senior lecturer of transport planning, engineering and urban structure at the University of Rwanda.

He said more efforts are needed to implement national transport policy.
