Entry requirements

This advice reflects the UK government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK, for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Greece set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact Greece’s embassy or consulate in the UK.

COVID-19 rules

Countries may restrict travel or bring in rules at short notice. Check with your travel company or airline for changes.

If you test positive for COVID-19, you may need to stay where you are until you test negative. You may also need to seek treatment there.

Travel to Greece

Follow any instructions given on arrival at immigration or airport testing facilities. Check the Ministry of Tourism website for more information.

Passport validity requirements

If you are planning to travel to an EU country (except Ireland), or Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino or Vatican City, you must follow the Schengen area passport requirements .

Your passport must be:

• issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country (check the ‘date of issue’)
• valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)

You must check your passport meets these requirements before you travel. If your passport was issued before 1 October 2018, extra months may have been added to its expiry date.

Contact the embassy of the country you are visiting if you think that your passport does not meet both these requirements. Renew your passport if you need to .

Visa requirements

You can travel to countries in the Schengen area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa. This applies if you travel:

• as a tourist
• to visit family or friends
• to attend business meetings, cultural or sports events
• for short-term studies or training

If you are travelling to Greece and other Schengen countries without a visa, make sure your whole visit is within the 90-day limit. Visits to Schengen countries within the previous 180 days before you travel count towards your 90 days.

For a longer stay (to work or study, for business or for other reasons) you will need to meet the Greek government’s entry requirements. Check with the Greek Embassy before you make arrangements to travel about what type of visa and work permit, if any, you may need.

The entry requirements for touring creatives have recently changed, more details of the new rules can be found on the Greek Embassy website. If you stay in Greece with a residence permit or long-stay visa, this does not count towards your 90-day visa-free limit.

Passport stamping

Check your passport is stamped if you enter or exit the Schengen area through Greece as a visitor. Border guards will use passport stamps to check you’re complying with the 90-day visa-free limit for short stays in the Schengen area. If relevant entry or exit stamps are not in your passport, border guards will presume that you have overstayed your visa-free limit. If you do overstay, you may be fined on departure, and have restrictions placed on your ability to re-enter Greece whilst the fine remains unpaid.

You can show evidence of when and where you entered or exited the Schengen area, and ask the border guards to add this date and location in your passport. Examples of acceptable evidence include boarding passes and tickets.

You may also need to:

• show a return or onward ticket
• show you have enough money for your stay

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods that can be brought into and taken out of Greece . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Taking food and drink into the EU

You cannot take meat, milk or products containing them into EU countries. There are some exceptions for medical reasons, for example certain amounts of powdered infant milk, infant food, or pet food required for medical reasons. What is a tourist visa.

The most common type of diplomatic document is a travel visa. It allows people of all ages and walks of life to visit a country of their choice.

So, do you need a visa to travel to Greece? In this article, we will tell you about the requirements for Greek tourist visas. Greece is a member of the EU and has varying requirements for entry depending on a visitor's country of origin. At present, it operates a visa-free regime for 90 countries.

Eligibility for a travel visa for Greece

Before we go into details on what citizens can visit Greece and what is required to obtain a Greek visa, let us consider what kind of travellers will generally be allowed to enter the country.

A prospective tourist must:

have a good intention to travel;

be able to bear all necessary and unforeseen expenses;

provide reasons for returning to their home country;

exhibit a good character (e.g. provide a clear criminal record);

be in good health;

have a genuine purpose and the proof thereof (e.g., an itinerary).

Provided that you satisfy these criteria and are eager to prove it during a personal visit to a Greek consulate, read on to find out about the visa requirements for this country.

Who needs a tourist visa

At present, citizens of over 90 states can travel to Greece without a visa, and the nationals of other 150 countries must obtain a Schengen visa prior to their visit. This means that citizens of some countries that presently enter Greece without a visa will have to fill in a special application form online ahead of visiting the country. If the ETIAS application is successful, this electronic travel authorization will be linked to a traveller's passport and allow the eligible citizens to travel to Greece and the Schengen zone. It will be valid for 3 years and allow the stays for up to 90 days. The programme is open to travellers with dual citizenship .

Nationals not eligible for ETIAS but who presently travel to Greece visa-free will need to apply for a Schengen visa, which will allow them only to visit Greece but not other EU/EEA states.

Meanwhile, the following requirements are applicable depending on the traveller's country of origin. The majority of people, especially the citizens of most African and Asian countries, Russia, and the CIS countries, will have to apply for a Schengen visa to travel to Greece. Yet, there are certain countries that enjoy visa-free entry.

EU/EEA countries and Switzerland

Currently, citizens of these areas do not need a visa to visit Greece as tourists. Furthermore, if any of these states is a part of the Schengen Zone, their citizens do not need to apply for any kind of visa to travel, study, or work in Greece. They are free to move between the EU states provided they have a valid ID.

The Schengen Zone

Citizens of these countries are exempt from the visa regime and can freely enter Greece.

Citizens of the United States can travel to any Schengen member state, including Greece, without a visa. They can stay in the country for up to 90 days. This does not mean, nevertheless, that no travel documents are required at all.

Where and when to apply

You can check online whether your country belongs to a visa-free zone or not. Now let us look at where you need to go to submit a Greek visa application, and what time period you should allocate to receive your visa on time.

In general, there are 3 options:

A travel agent. You simply provide the documents and let professionals do the job for you.

A local Greek consulate or embassy. This is the most traditional means of getting any type of visa. Its main drawback is the insufficient or vague information about requirements, which unfortunately often results in visas being denied or delayed. If you go down this route, make sure you clarify everything that is unclear prior to submitting an application.

A visa application centre. You may be surprised to know that some embassies actually outsource their visa services to such centres. Bear in mind, though, that, depending on the time you plan to travel, these centres may be overcrowded and overwhelmed with applicants, leading to delays and even possible errors.

Fees and extra expenses

As with most visas, applicants have to pay a service charge and a visa processing fee upon submitting their application. These payments are non-refundable and can be made by card or in cash. Below is a rough estimate of the service tariffs:

Adults: €60;

Children aged 6 to 12 years: €35;

Children under 6 years of age: free.

As for a Schengen visa fee, it depends on the traveller's country of origin. For example, a traveller from South Africa may pay more or less than a traveller from Russia. To determine the visa fee, contact your local Greek embassy or consulate. Average fees are:

Adults: €80;

Children aged 6 to 12 years: €40;

Please bear in mind that neither service charge nor visa fee guarantees permission to enter. None of these can also be refunded if the application is unsuccessful.

Tourist Visa Requirements

In this section, we shall go over the document pack for visa-free travellers. As we said, although they do not require a Schengen visa, they must still provide other documentation to obtain entry to the country.

A valid passport

A valid identification card must satisfy the following criteria:

it is valid for no less than 3 months beyond your intended return to your home country;

it is in good condition (not torn or otherwise spoilt);

it is not past its expiry date (usually 10 years).

Proof of accommodation

No country's officials want their tourists to sleep in the subway. Naturally, they want to know precisely where you are going to stay during your visit. The following may sufficiently prove this:

a hotel reservation;

a print-off from a room booking website (e.g. Airbnb);

a rental agreement;

an invitation from a friend or a family member with whom you are planning to stay on your visit.

Proof of financial independence

This is another mandatory requirement, for staying and travelling in the country may lead to both expected and unforeseen expenses. Officials want to know how you are planning to cover them, so it may be a good idea to enquire about the living costs and calculate your travelling budget. The following can prove your financial sustainability:

recent bank or credit card statements;

payslips from work.

Itinerary and Return Tickets

Travellers are advised to have these two documents to prove the following:

travelling is indeed their sole or primary purpose;

and they definitely plan to return.

We will look at insurance requirements later on, however, be aware that valid medical insurance is obligatory to travel in the EU. Its validity period must be as long as your stay in the country.

Finally, please remember that depending on the time you choose for your trip document requirements and fees may change. Make sure you contact your nearest visa centre or consulate for updates.

Documents for non-exempt countries

Generally, most of the above-mentioned documents are also required for citizens of non-visa-free states who must apply for a Schengen visa. However, certain changes and special conditions are applicable.

In addition to the known requirements, this time a passport must have two blank pages for a visa stamp or sticker.

A Greece Schengen application form

No matter how seasoned a traveller you are, pay attention to the following:

fill out the visa form completely, correctly, and accurately.

A tip: write down all the data you are providing on all forms to make the information consistent.

A Schengen cover letter

Previous Visas Copies

This is required for travellers who have obtained Schengen visas before.

The medical or travel insurance must cover the full length of stay. For other conditions, see below.

As above, however, be prepared for additional scrutiny as you are considered a totally "foreign" visitor.

Same as for visa-free entrants.

An itinerary

If you are only travelling to Greece and back, then you need to provide a detailed plan of your activities during your stay. However, you may be entertaining the idea of visiting another Schengen country for which you have a visa. In this case, you will need to show what other places you wish to visit and the purpose thereof.

A return ticket

This will act as proof that you are going to go back to your home country and not to become an asylum seeker or an illegal immigrant.

A clean criminal record

This document provided by your country's officials will demonstrate that you pose no threat to the country or its residents.

Further documents may be required to prove your status, but check with the embassy or consulate for updates.

Employed applicants

a valid contract of employment;

an employer's written permission to take a leave from work;

the bank statements for the past 6 months;

an Income Tax Return form;

recent payslips to prove both sufficient funds and employment.

Self-employed applicants

a copy of a business license;

an Income Tax Return;

a letter confirming the self-employed status written by a solicitor, an accountant, or another responsible entity.

documents that prove the student's status (e.g., a letter from an educational institution for existing students, or a proof of enrollment at an institution for prospective students);

a proof of sufficient funds, e.g. a work contract or bank statements (for working students) or a letter from a sponsor.

Please note that if a student is sponsored (e.g. by their parents), they will need to provide relevant documents that prove the parents' ability to support them.

Also, if you wish to study at a Greek educational institution, you must apply for a student visa.

Retired Travelers

documents that prove the retired status;

pension statements for the last 6 months.

Tourist Visa Insurance

Travelling to a foreign country may occasionally result in unforeseen circumstances. In many Schengen countries public healthcare is available, so visitors to Greece must obtain travel insurance prior to their trip. This is done in order to alleviate the burden on the health system in case of unexpected issues.

Travel insurance must satisfy the following criteria:

provide coverage of at least €30,000.

be valid in all 26 Schengen countries;

cover most emergency expenses, including a return to one's home country for medical reasons, urgent treatments, or death.

If you expect to get an extended Schengen visa, you should obtain travel insurance that lasts for 12 months.

Visa Photo Requirements

Photographs are normally submitted as part of any application. However, in the case with visas, there are strict requirements that must be obeyed, otherwise, you risk having your application turned down. The following specifications apply:

photos are 3 months old or less;

size: 35mm wide x 45mm tall;

taken against a white background;

printed on quality glossy paper (not matte);

have no creases or marks;

facial expression is neutral;

the applicant looks straight into the camera;

the face takes up to 80% of the frame;

both eyes are open and not covered by reflective glasses, hair, or glares;

forehead and chin are well visible;

headwear is permitted only for religious purposes and must not cover any part of the face.

Underage Visa Requirements

This section is for those who travel to Greece as a family with small children. First, bear in mind that each child must have their own application, filled in and signed by both parents. Apart from all standard documentation, the following is also mandatory:

an application with both parents' signatures;

a child's birth certificate;

if a child is eligible to travel alone – a notarized parental authorization signed by either both parents or guardians;

if a child is travelling with only one parent – notarized permission from another parent;

if another parent is absent (divorced, dead, ill, etc.) – a relevant official documental proof;

copies of both parents' IDs.

Adult photo requirements apply to children older than 5 years. For younger children, neutral facial expression and a direct look into the camera are not mandatory, and they need not occupy the centre of the photograph. Babies (1 year old or younger) may have their eyes closed in the photo.

Visa Processing Time

Once your application has been submitted, and you paid your fees and attended the interview with the immigration officer, it takes around 15 calendar days to process the documents. The following events may delay the visa being issued:

a peak season when there is a high demand for tourist visas to Greece;

political events or epidemics;

new travel laws and regulations.

Make sure you have collected all necessary documents, carefully fill in your application, and submit it well ahead of your journey, to avoid delays and complications for your travel.

Green Card Holder Requirements

The United States Green Card holders have not yet obtained US citizenship. As a result, they are not eligible for visa exemption if they wish to visit Greece. The visa requirements will depend on their country of origin. For the purposes of this article, we assume that a Green Card holder is not a European citizen. The good news is that, should a visa be required, the holder can apply for it at their nearest Greek embassy or consulate in the USA. There is no need to travel back home to get a visa.

On another hand, if someone is visiting the US as a tourist (on a B1/B2 visa) and wishes to travel to Greece, they must return to their home country to submit a visa application. The Green Card holder's conditions are not applicable in this case.

• To visit Greece for tourism purposes, you need a Greece tourist visa, which is a type of Greek Schengen visa.
• You can apply for a Greece Schengen visa at the nearest Greek embassy or consulate in your country or region.
• The visa application process usually involves submitting all the required documents and supporting documents, such as a visa application form, travel documents, and travel medical insurance with a minimum coverage of 30,000 EUR.
• You also need to pay the visa fees or service fees when you submit your application.
• The Greece visa requirements may vary depending on your nationality, intended visit, financial means, employment status, travel date, and other factors.
• The Greece visa application process may take up to 15 calendar days, and you may need to attend a visa interview or provide biometric data, such as your fingerprints and facial image.
• The Greek Schengen visa sticker will be affixed to your travel document if your application is accepted, and it will show the maximum duration and validity of your visa.
• The Greece Schengen visa allows you to stay in Greece and other Schengen member states for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
• If you plan to stay longer than 90 days, you need to apply for a long-stay visa or a residence permit from the competent Greek authorities.
• To apply for a Greece Schengen visa, you need to complete the Greece visa application form accurately and provide all the necessary information and documents.
• The standard documents required for a Greece tourist visa include a valid travel document, travel medical insurance, sufficient financial means, and a confirmed travel itinerary or reservation.

Note : You can stay in the UK until the decision about extension is taken, but only if you have applied within the visa period.

In case you plan on staying in Greece for more than 90 days you must apply for a residency permit, not a Greek Schengen visa.

Please note that if you are not a resident in the United Kingdom you should apply at the Greek Embassy/Consulate/VAC in your home country of residence.

Steps to Applying for a Greek Schengen Visa from the UK

Step 1: know your visa type and validity.

There are two types of Schegen visa that you can apply for and the one you need will depend on the duration of your trip and your reason for travelling to Greece:

• Short-stay (Schengen) Visa – valid for up to 90 days (in a 180-day period) for the purposes of tourism, business, visiting family/friends, conference, EEA/EU national family member
• Residence and work permits (Long stays) – you should apply for this kind of visa if you want to live in Greece for more than 90 days for employment, family reunification, study, research etc.

Additionally, there are also other types of Schengen visas that depend on their validity:

a) Uniform Schengen Visas (USV) – Uniform Schengen Visa allows the holder to transit or stay in the desired Schengen state for the duration of up to a maximum of 90 days every 180 days starting from the date of entry.

USV’s apply to three different categories:

• Category “A” (Airport Transit Visa)  — this visa allows for the holder to wait for a connecting flight from one non-Schengen country to another through a Schengen country airport. The holder is however only restricted to the airport and cannot leave, even if they desire to stay at a hotel outside the airport.
• Category “B” (Transit Visa)  — this visa type allows holders to travel through multiple Schengen countries to a non-Schengen country by car, coach, or plane, as long as travel lasts no more than 5 days. This visa type would be helpful if you desire to stay at a hotel that is outside the airport before taking a connecting flight.
• Category “C” (Short-term Visa ) — this is the most popular Schengen Visa. It allows its holder to visit and stay in a Schengen Area for a certain period of time depending on the visa validity. It is primarily issued for tourism, visiting family and friends, business and other authorized purposes. It can be provided for single entry, double-entry, or multiple entries, depending on the purpose of your travel. Category C visas can be issued for single entry, double-entry, or multiple-entry depending on the purpose of travel.

b) Limited territorial validity visas (LTV) – Limited Territorial Validity (LTV) Visas permit you to travel only in the Schengen country that issued the visa or in special cases, travel in Schengen States specifically mentioned when applying for the visa. This visa is invalid in any other Schengen area that is not specified prior. This visa is usually issued in peculiar cases that fall out of the Uniform Schengen Visa (USV) category such as humanitarian reasons, international obligations or in cases of some sort of emergency.

c) National Visa – The national visa (category “D”) is granted to individuals who plan on studying, working, or residing permanently in one of the Schengen countries. The national visa can either be:

• Single-entry  – allowing you to reside, work or study in the Schengen country for a certain period of time with the assurance that after which they shall return to their country, or
• Multiple-entry  – allowing you to travel in and out of this Schengen country multiple times and also travel to other Schengen Areas without having to apply for a new visa.

Schengen Visa Types According to Purpose of Travel

On the visa application form, you will be prompted to indicate the purpose of your travel to the Schengen territory. Here are some purposes to help you apply for the correct visa:

• Tourism   – This is the most popular purpose of travel to Schengen Countries. Applicants, who intend to travel purely for tourist purposes, i.e. sightseeing, leisure, and experiencing their culture, architecture, foods, and much more, need to indicate this on the application form.
• Business   – If you intend to travel for business purposes, i.e. visiting a business/company for meetings, recruitments, training, or any other work-related activities, then you need to indicate Business the purpose of your travels. Every Business visa application has to be confirmed by an invitation letter from a business/company based in Greece, if not, you will be required to apply as a Tourist.
• Airport Transit   – Certain nationalities have to apply for an airport transit visa in order to be allowed to make a stopover at an airport in a Schengen Area, without entering the Schengen Country. You need to indicate airport transit as the purpose of travel on your application form.
• Transit   – This is similar to the above-mentioned purpose of travel, popular among sea travellers that need to stop over at the seaport of one of the member states.
• Visiting Family or Friends   – If you need to visit and stay with your family or friends that legally reside in the Schengen Area, you can then indicate this as your purpose of travel. You’ll, however, be required to provide a letter of invitation among other documents.
• Study  – Students wishing to attend any type of educational institution in the Schengen area need to indicate this on their application. They can either choose to apply for a  short term 3-month Schengen study visa  or National Visa (category “D”) if they plan on being in the country longer.
• Medical   – Indicate this as your purpose of travel if you are travelling to any of the member states of the Schengen territory to seek medical treatment. This visa will allow you to get the medical care you need at any medical institution for a period of 90 days within a 180-day period.
• Official Visit  – Tick this as your purpose of travel if you are travelling to the Schengen region in an official capacity.
• Cultural, Sports, and Film Crews   – this visa is for people wishing to travel to a Schengen member country for the purpose of attending a cultural, sports, or religious event or they are part of a film crew. The applicant should be part of the event, i.e. a performer at a concert, or a writer presenting their book at a book event, or an athlete participating in a sports event and not only as a mere audience.
• Other  – If the purpose of your travel does not fall under any of the mentioned categories, you’ll have to choose the “other” option on the application form. You will, however, be required to specify the purpose of your visit in a few words.

Step 2: Identify where to make application and book an appointment

You should apply for a Greek visa at the appropriate Greek Embassy/Consulate or Greek visa application centre in the UK if:

• Greece is the only Schengen country you plan on visiting
• Greece is your main destination (the country you will be staying the longest in)
• Greece is the first Schengen country you are visiting (when spending an equal amount of days in Greece and another Schengen country)

To book an appointment for a Greece visa from the UK you can do either of the following:

• Diplomatic passport holders and their family members
• Family members of EU/EEA nationals All applicants that do not fall into these categories are required to book an appointment with the Consulate Office.
• Apply through VFS Centres . The visa section is open Monday to Friday from 9:30 AM to 11:30 PM except on public holidays.

Step 3: Complete your application form

The Schengen visa application form contains questions about you including:

• Name and surname
• Date and place of birth
• Nationality
• Sex and marital status
• National Identity number
• Passport number
• Home address and email
• Purpose of trip
• Question regarding previous trips to Schengen, if any
• Intended date of arrival in Schengen area you are visiting, and the intended period of stay
• Cost of traveling and remaining in Schengen area you are visiting, who will cover them, etc.

If you intend to travel for business purposes, i.e. visiting a business/company for meetings, recruitments, training or any other work-related activities, then you need to indicate Business the purpose of your travels.

Make sure your answers are correct and that they comply with the information in the rest of the documents. Complete the form, print it twice, and sign both copies at the end. Find out more about how to complete a Schengen visa application form in this blog post .

 Step 4: Prepare your documents

The following list of documents are required in order to obtain a visa to Greece in the UK:

• Your passport has been issued within the previous 10 years,
• Your passport has 2 full blank pages, one for the visa stamp and an additional spare page,
• Your passport will be valid for at least three (3) months after the date you exit the Schengen Area.
• A valid UK residence permit or another form of Identity Card.
• The UK residency permit must be endorsed in the actual passport (or on a new biometric ID card)
• The UK residence permit must be valid for at least another three more months beyond the date you plan to leave Greece.
• One Greek Schengen Visa application form filled out completely and signed by the applicant.
• One recently taken passport format photo with a blank background and where all your facial features are clear, which must be glued to the application form. Applications with stapled photographs will be rejected.
• A cover letter explaining the purpose of the visit to Greece
• Fingerprints
• A copy of the passport bio page where the photo is included Note: Children under the age of 12 are exempted from providing fingerprints.
• Round trip flight/travel reservations or other proof of intended transport
• Complete itinerary of your visit to Greece (if several Schengen States will be visited or if the trip covers several Schengen States and non-Schengen countries).
• Travel Insurance stating that you are covered in case of a medical emergency and repatriation not just in Greece but in the whole Schengen zone (minimum coverage of € 30,000). Holders of diplomatic passports and family members of EU/EEA citizens are exempted from providing proof of travel medical insurance
• Evidence of a hotel booking or rental agreement, or
• Invitation from your Greek host (family member, friend) with a copy of their passport
• A recent statement of UK bank account for the last three months that shows funds of at least 50 € (40 £) per day spent in Greece, or
• Traveller’s cheques, or
• Proof of sponsorship
• Certificate of criminal record of the home country– showing that candidate has no open crime case involvement
• Proof of paid Greece visa fee.

Note : Photocopies of the original documents should also be submitted and documents should not be more than one month old.

The documents listed above are documents required in all cases, regardless of the purpose of your visit to Greece.

Depending on your employment status, here is a list of additional documents that are required for your visa application:

For employees:

• Employment contract
• Current bank statement of the latest 6 months
• Leave permission from the employer
• Income Tax Return (ITR) form or Certificate of Income Tax deducted at the source of salary

For the self-employed:

• A copy of your business license
• Company bank statement of the latest 6 months
• Income Tax Return (ITR)

For foreign students in the UK:

• Proof of enrollment
• No-objection certificate from school or university

For retirees:

• Pension statement of the latest 6 months

Family members of EU/EEA/CH citizen:

For the family members of an EU/EEA/CH citizen, the visa application procedure is simplified. The following individuals are defined as family members of an EU citizen:

• The spouse;
• The partner with whom the EU citizen has contracted a registered partnership, based on UK legislation.
• The direct descendants who are under the age of 21 or are dependent, either of the spouse or partner; or the dependent’s direct relatives in the ascending line and those of the spouse or partner as defined above.

The requirements needed are:

• A recent (less than 3 months old) Confirmation of Employment letter from their spouse’s employer stating the position held within the company as well as the starting date,
• Spouse’s valid passport
• An officially translated marriage certificate. The translation must be in English, French or Greek and must be certified as a true copy by the Embassy of the country where the marriage took place or by the Legalization Bureau of the Foreign Office in UK
• If married to a Greek national marriage should be registered with the relevant Municipality in Greece

Requirements for children under the age of 18:

Parents or an adult guardian are required to accompany their under-age children at the application centre at the Embassy of Greece in London. Also, minors who are granted a Greek visa are not allowed to travel to Greece by themselves. They should be accompanied by an adult during their stay in Greece.

Required documents for visa application for underage children

• Birth certificate
• Greece Schengen Visa application form should be signed by both parents.
• Family court order, in cases where only one parent has full custody over the child.
• Certified copies of ID / passport of both parents
• A notarized parental authorization to travel to Greece, signed by both parents / guardians, if the minor will be travelling alone with another person.

Step 5: Attend your appointment

On the day of the interview, show up at the appointment center on time (embassy or consulate). Remember that if you are late even for a few minutes, then they will probably cancel your appointment.

Making a good first impression is important for a successful interview. Try wearing something a bit more official, but comfortable.

The Greece visa interview takes around 10 minutes to complete. During this interview, the consular officer will ask you several questions about you and your intended trip. You will also be submitting the required documents throughout the meeting, to the interviewer.

After the verification of your application, the application form information will be entered into the online system of the consulate or embassy and you will receive a printed copy of your application, which process usually takes about 10 to 15 minutes. After you get the printed form, please make sure to verify all the details are correct and sign the form.

Underage applicants must be accompanied by their mother/father/legal guardian.

Visa Fees for UK Residents

The fee must be paid upon submitting the Greek visa application. After you complete this payment, you will receive a receipt, which shows that payment has been made, which must be offered amongst other documents of the application dossier. Visa fee exemptions

• Children younger than 6 years of age
• Original Marriage Certificate, or
• Civil Partnership Certificate
• Original full Birth Certificate
• EU/EAA national’s passport.
• Invitation letter from the Greek institution
• Letter from the University/organization in the UK
• Representatives of non-profit organizations aged 25 years or less participating in seminars, conferences, sports, cultural or educational events organized by non-profit organizations.
• A letter from the school principal/dean that states that the trip is an obligatory part of the school/college programme.

Greece visa fee discounts

For nationals of countries that have a visa facilitation agreement with the EU visa applications cost only 35 € (29.70 £). Nationals of countries that are granted visa discounts for Greece are:

• Bosnia and Herzegovina*
• Montenegro*
• North Macedonia*
• Russian Federation

*Note: This only applies to those nationals who do not hold a biometric passport.

Step 6: Receive your visa

How long can the application process take.

You can apply for a Greek Schengen visa 6 months before your planned trip. Usually, the visa application process takes a minimum of 5 working days , therefore you are advised to apply 3 weeks in advance of your planned trip.

For the nationals of the following countries the application time takes at least 14 working days :

• Afghanistan
• North Korea
• Saudi Arabia
• Palestinian travel documents holders
• South Sudan

Greece Schengen Visa Application Decision

If your application is rejected, it would have been for a specific reason.

What are common Greece Schengen visa rejection reasons?

There are several reasons why your Greece Schengen visa application could be rejected. Some common Schengen visa rejection reasons include:

• Marriage certificate missing  – if you are applying for a visa for family reasons, you may have to prove family ties. This is why you must provide a marriage certificate
• You applied for the wrong visa  – it is your responsibility to apply for the correct visa depending on how long you are going to Greece for and your reason for travelling there
• It is not clear that you plan to return to the UK  – it must be clear that you intend to return to the UK before the visa expires. If the visa staff have doubts about this, your visa will be rejected
• The purpose of your trip cannot be established  – the reason why you are planning to go to Greece must be made clear. You can do this by providing specific documents like a full itinerary, work contract or invitation letter, etc.

You need to make sure that you submit the required documents and answer your visa interview well in order to get the best chance of having your visa application approved.

What if my Greece Schengen visa is rejected?

If you receive a negative answer in your Greece Schengen visa application, this does not mean you cannot ever travel to Greece. You have two options:

• File an appeal  for a Greece Schengen visa rejection if you believe that the decision to deny you a visa is unjust. You should have a strong basis for your complaint. You can appeal this decision by writing an appeal letter for a Greece Schengen visa rejection.
• Reapply  by correcting the mistakes you did in your previous application. Or improve your situation in order to comply with the eligibility criteria for a Greece Schengen visa.

Greece Schengen Visa Extension

A person visiting Greece on a Schengen visa may be able to extend their visa if they have a legitimate reason for doing so, either personal, professional, medical or emergencies. The decisions to approve a Schengen visa extension request are handled case by case.

The duration you are allowed to stay in Greece is stated in your  Schengen visa sticker . It is important not to overstay during your trip to Greece or the rest of the Schengen Zone or risk facing penalties like a fine, deportation, being banned from travelling back to the Schengen Zone, and having difficulties in your future Schengen applications.

There are also cases when people do not get any penalties for overstaying, for example a child or a person that cannot travel without a caretaker because of an illness or disability or an unforeseen event that prevents you from leaving the country, like COVID-19.

Greece Schengen Visa Extension Process

The overall process of extending your Greek Schengen Visa will involve:

• Determining whether you have a justified reason to request for an extension
• Submitting all the necessary documents. These include a valid passport that has the Schengen Visa used to get in the Schengen area stamped in it, one passport-sized photo, proof of financial subsistence, Schengen Visa Insurance that covers the extension duration, and all the documents that justify your reason for an extension
• Paying visa fees where applicable
• Attending a visa interview if necessary
• Waiting for the approval

You must apply for a Schengen Visa extension before it expires. It may take a few days to a month for the authorities to process your visa extension request, during which you are legally permitted to stay in the country where you applied for the Schengen visa but cannot travel to other Schengen countries.

If your visa extension request is approved, you can extend your stay in the Schengen Area until the visa validity. However, if your visa extension application is rejected, you will have to leave the Schengen area in a day or two.

There are 2 types of visas and the one you need to apply for will depend on the length of your trip and the reason why you wish to go to Greece:

• Short-stay Schengen visa – up to 90 days for the purposes of tourism, business , visiting family or friends, cultural and educational, sports, medical reasons, studies, transit, airport transit and other

Schengen Visa Application Process at Global Visa Center World/the Embassy of Greece

Visa applications are processed with 2 weeks, however, it could take as long as 3 weeks. This is due to the fact that applications for some nationalities are subject to prior consultation.

In addition, applying around Easter, summer holidays (July and August) and Christmas could take longer. This is because the embassy only processes a fixed amount of visa applications every day during these times. Processing times may also increase during Greek and UK public holidays.

Therefore, it is advisable to apply well in advance of your departure date. You may apply up to 90 days ahead, so don’t leave it too late.

Here are a few steps to help you apply for your Greece visa:

Step 1: Book an appointment               

Making appointments with the embassy or visa application center is generally free and can be done yourself. If you are a family member of an EU citizen, you are eligible to apply directly at the embassy . You do not need an appointment to submit your documents, but you can only apply on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12.00pm – 2.30 pm.

Step 3: Prepare your documents

Each category of visa has a list of required documents and they are not all the same, so check what is required before you start to prepare your documents. You can find this information on Global Visa Center World’s website where you can download and print the checklist .

Please note, your documents should be recent (no older than 1 month) and you need originals as well as photocopies.

Documents include:

• Visa application form . If the applicant is a minor, the application form has to be completed and signed by both parents
• Passport with at least 2 blank pages, must be valid for at least 3 months after your return to the UK and must have been issued within the last 10 years. (Extended passport may still be valid, but if it is older than 10 years the passport is not accepted)
• Photocopies of previous Schengen visas issued in the last 3 years (if applicable)
• UK residence permit endorsed in your passport or issued as a biometrics card, must be valid for at least 3 months after your return to the UK
• Passport-sized photograph – see here for photo requirements
• Proof of current occupation for employees – employer letter with an original stamp and signature from the HR department of your company, stating how long you have been with the company and your job role OR the last 3 payslips
• For students – letter from your university/college/school with original signature confirming attendance and addressed to the embassy
• If self-employed – the last tax return form or a signed self-employment letter confirming what you do, and addressed to the embassy. It must have been obtained from the relevant official
• For retirees – proof of pension income
• Proof of funds – bank statement for the last 3 months to show that you have a minimum amount of £40.00 per day in Greece. Travelers’ checks can also be provided, but you MUST provide bank statements too
• Details of sponsorship with a copy of your sponsor’s passport, proof of relationship, such as marriage/birth certificate (translated to English or Greek and certified by an official translator in the UK, if applicable), sponsor’s bank statement for the last 3 months and evidence that your sponsor is employed
• Evidence of travel (airplane, boat, coach, hired car etc) – fully paid return flight tickets and/or driving license, car registration, car insurance (hired car) and return travel tickets (ferry or Eurotunnel). Note that Embassies in UK may require actual fully paid tickets for the visa application and not the flight reservation based on the jurisdiction you live in. So double check the embassy requirements within your jurisdiction before submitting the documents for visa application.
• Proof of accommodation – confirmed hotel/holiday home reservation including dates of travel, address of hotel etc
• Full itinerary for each day in Greece/the Schengen area
• Host’s cover letter (signed & dated) – confirming travel period, address and contact details of host together with the host’s passport/residence permit in Greece
• Letter of invitation from an individual, company, or an educational facility stating the reason for the trip, the duration etc
• Schengen Travel insurance – valid throughout the complete territory of the Schengen area and must cover the entire trip. The insurance must cover medical emergency and repatriation for at least €30,000

If you’re planning to obtain your flight reservation for visa without paying for the ticket, all you have to do is follow the 3 simple steps below:

• Visit the Visa Reservation website to choose the right package
•  Submit the travel details and make the payment online
• Receive flight itinerary in email

Step 4: Attend your appointment

On the day of your appointment:

• Arrive early – it’s a good idea to get there at least 15 – 30 minute early. If you are late, you will have to make a new appointment and this may prevent you from leaving on your planned departure date
• Remember your documents – if you submit an incomplete application, the visa center will not accept your application and it will not be sent to the embassy for processing, so check and recheck you have everything you need. Don’t forget to photocopy everything or sign in the appropriate places
• Dress smartly – if you want to make a good impression, don’t dress too casually

The visa officer will examine your application and supporting documents and if he/she needs to clarify anything and/or need more information, the officer will question you. All you need to do is to answer truthfully and give as much, or as little, information as required.

Typical questions include :

• Are you traveling alone?
• Do you know anyone in Greece or the Schengen area ?
• Are you related to anyone involved in terrorist activities?
• What is your salary?
• How do we know that you will return to the UK after your trip?

You will also pay the fee for your visa . You can pay in cash (except Manchester and Edinburgh), credit/debit card or postal order payable to Greece Visa Application Centre. Please note, Global Visa Center World also charge a service fee of £18.92. These fees will not be refunded to you, even if your application gets rejected.

You will also provide a scan of your fingerprints and a photo. This biometric data will be uploaded on the Visa Information System (VIS) and will be used by the immigration authorities.

Step 5: Receive your visa

Once you have submitted your application, you can track its progress. Go to Global Visa Center World’s website and click on: “Online services” and “Track your application”:

Key in your application ID and date of birth. Click on: “Submit” to find out what stage your application is at:

When the embassy has reached a decision, your passport will be returned to Global Visa Center World who will contact you when it has arrived. If you have submitted your application to the London office, you can collect it from Global Visa Center World . Otherwise, your passport will be returned by Courier Delivery for which there is an additional fee of £14.95. Please note, you can only collect your passport if you have your receipt.

The decision will be either:

• Approved – you will find your Greece visa inside your passport
• Rejected – your visa application has been rejected for a reason

Common rejection reasons

• Valid travel insurance was not provided – when you apply for your Schengen visa, you must have valid travel insurance in place
• Your intention to leave Greece/the Schengen area could not be established – you must provide evidence that you will return to your home country. For example, proof of your professional status in the UK
• Incorrect application form – you need to use the correct application form which can be found on the embassy’s website or Global Visa Center World’s website . Provide truthful answers, fill in all the necessary fields and don’t forget to sign it where appropriate
• Purpose of your trip was not clear – you must provide evidence of your trip and you can do this with documents such as tour itinerary, work contract, student acceptance letter etc

Old foes Turkey and Greece will test a five-month-old friendship initiative Monday when Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visits Ankara.

The two NATO members, which share decades of mutual animosity, a tense border and disputed waters, agreed to sideline disputes last December. Instead, they’re focusing on trade and energy, repairing cultural ties and a long list of other items placed on the so-called positive agenda.

Mitsotakis is to meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara on Monday as part of efforts to improve ties following the solidarity Athens showed Ankara after a devastating earthquake hit southern Turkey last year.

The two leaders have sharp differences over the Israeli-Hamas war, but are keen to hold back further instability in the eastern Mediterranean as conflict also continues to rage in Ukraine.

“We always approach our discussions with Turkey with confidence and with no illusions that Turkish positions will not change from one moment to the next,” Mitsotakis said last week, commenting on the visit. “Nevertheless, I think it’s imperative that when we disagree, the channels of communication should always be open."

“We should disagree without tension and without this always causing an escalation on the ground," he added.

Ioannis Grigoriadis, a professor of political science at Ankara’s Bilkent University, said the two leaders would look for ways “to expand the positive agenda and look for topics where the two sides can seek win-win solutions,” such as in trade, tourism and migration.

Erdogan visited Athens in early December, and the two countries have since maintained regular high-level contacts to promote a variety of fence-mending initiatives, including educational exchanges and tourism.

Turkish citizens this summer are able to visit 10 Greek islands using on-the-spot visas , skipping a more cumbersome procedure needed to enter Europe’s common travel area zone, known as the Schengen area.

“This generates a great opportunity for improving the economic relations between the two sides, but also to bring the two stable societies closer — for Greeks and Turks to realize that they have more things in common than they think,” Grigoriadis said.

Disagreements have brought Athens and Ankara close to war on several occasions over the past five decades, mostly over maritime borders and the rights to explore for resources in the Aegean and eastern Mediterranean seas.

The two countries are also locked in a dispute over Cyprus, which was divided in 1974 when Turkey invaded following a coup by supporters of union with Greece. Only Turkey recognizes a Turkish Cypriot declaration of independence in the island’s northern third.

The dispute over the exploration of energy resources resulted in a naval standoff in 2020 and a vow by Erdogan to halt talks with the Mitsotakis government. But the two men met three times last year following a thaw in relations and a broader effort by Erdogan to re-engage with Western countries.

The foreign ministers of the two countries, Hakan Fidan of Turkey and George Gerapetritis of Greece, are set to join the talks Monday and hold a separate meeting.

Just weeks before Mitsotakis’ visit, Erdogan announced the opening of a former Byzantine-era church in Istanbul as a mosque, drawing criticism from Greece and the Greek Orthodox church. Like Istanbul’s landmark Hagia Sophia, the Chora had operated as a museum for decades before it was converted into a mosque.

Turkey, meanwhile, has criticized recently announced plans by Greece to declare areas in the Ionian and Aegean seas as “marine parks” to conserve aquatic life. Turkey objects to the one-sided declaration in the Aegean, where some areas remain under dispute, and has labelled the move as “a step that sabotages the normalization process.”

Grigoriadis said Turkey and Greece could focus on restoring derelict Ottoman monuments in Greece and Greek Orthodox monuments in Turkey. “That would be an opportunity” for improved ties, he said.
