A guide to Champaner Pavagadh Archaeological Park – A UNESCO World heritage site in Gujarat

150 km from Ahmedabad, lies a town that used to be the capital of the Gujarat Sultanate. It was a powerhouse for almost two decades before it fell to abandon. Though not completely lost, Champaner Pavagadh never climbed back to its glory days. However, if you step into this UNESCO World Heritage site of Champaner-Pavagadh archaeological park Gujarat , you can relive the magic of those days. In fact, I am told that this is the only original pre-Mughal Islamic city that survives in India today .

Champaner Gujarat completely surprised me with its sheer spread and diversity of heritage attractions. At one end, you have an 8th-century Shakti Peetha temple of Kalika Mata mandir on top of Pavagadh hill and at the other end are the 15th-century mosques sporting unique Hindu-Islamic architecture. In addition to these are the wells, tanks, mints and gates of the Champaner fort. To explore it fully, I highly recommend spending at least 2 days in Champaner archaeological park .

Are Champaner and Pavagadh the same?

While the name is always almost taken together, the two places – Champaner and Pavagadh are not the same. They are located within a distance of 1.5 km from each other. While Pavagadh is a hill that is best known for the Kalika Mata temple, Champaner refers to the adjoining area around the hill. The Champaner fortress was built across the Pavagadh hill and that along with the Kalika Mata temple and other Jain temples of this area is part of what is now called the Champaner-Pavagadh archaeological park.

History of Champaner-Pavagadh

Archaeological evidence traces the history of Champaner and Pavagadh back to the Stone age. Mythologically it connects the hill of Pavagadh to the story of Goddess Sati who self-immolated herself when her husband Lord Shiva was insulted by her father. What followed was immense destruction by the grief-stricken Lord Shiva. To help him regain his composure and bring back some balance to the Universe, Lord Vishnu cut the dead body of Sati into 51 pieces that fell onto earth. Each of these places transformed into Shaktipeethas (one of which is the Manikarnika Ghat of Varanasi and the other is the Nagadeepa Hindu temple of Jaffna ). It is believed that her right toe fell on Pavagadh hill and since then, the place has become an important Hindu Shaktipeetha.

Later, around the early 800s AD, this hill around with its surrounding areas came under the kingdom of Vanraj Chauhan of Anhivad Patan . It was he who is said to have named this area Champaner after his friend – a Bhil King named Champa who oversaw this area. The kingdom passed on from him to the Solankis (famous for the Patan Stepwell and Modhera Sun Temple). And eventually, from them, the Kirti Chauhans of Mewar (the clan of famous Prithviraj Chauhan ) took over.

Champaner resisted the attacks of Ahmed Shah in 1419. It remained with the Kirti Chauhans until 1484 when Mahmud Begada ( known for the completion of the construction of Adalaj ni Vav ) attacked it and succeeded in making it a part of his empire. It was he who developed it further and moved his capital from Ahmedabad to Champaner. The citadel was further fortified and prospered in the trade of silk and sandalwood. In fact, Mahmud Begada renamed it as Muhammadabad Champaner .

For 23 years, Champaner remained as the stronghold of the Gujarat Sultans. It finally fell to Humayun in 1536, who managed to invade it upon the death of Ahmed Shah. However, he did not stay there and Champaner Gujarat was abandoned. Later, the British rediscovered it in 1803. At that time, the population of this town was just 500. The British used it mainly as a hub for silk and sandalwood trade.

Eventually, Champaner Pavagadh was recognized for its heritage value, and under ASI as well as the Baroda heritage trust, it was nominated for a UNESCO World Heritage site. It was in 2004 that the Champaner Pavagadh Archaeological park entered this prestigious list of UNESCO World heritage sites . To quote the reason – “joint significance as a living Hindu pilgrimage center, its cluster of Jain temples, its remarkable preserved medieval urban fabric, its exquisite sandstone-carved mosques and tombs and its intangible heritage values” . And with that, you now can expect a diverse set of places to visit in Champaner Gujarat.

Best places to visit in Champaner Pavagadh archaeological park

It must be obvious to you now that this park is literally a heritage city and naturally, has tons of things to see and do. If I had to compare the scale it would be similar to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hampi . Given my experience, I highly suggest that you keep aside at least 2 – 3 full days to see it in its entirety. Also, note that, unlike Hampi which is better developed, some of these Champaner attractions are quite far from each other and will require a car/ bike.

The places to see in this archaeological park are clustered in two places – along Pavagadh hill and in the main Champaner fort. Mosques of Champaner Gujarat

When you walk through the fort of Champaner Pavagadh, there is no missing the elaborately constructed mosques. They are a perfect example of the unique Hindu-Islamic style of architecture that was used by the Gujarat Sultans . There are over eight different mosques in the Champaner Pavagadh archaeological park – of which I was able to do only three. I will not only tell you about these three but also, share the other major ones in this Champaner Pavagadh guide.

Jama Masjid – one of the key attractions of Champaner Pavagadh fort

Considered the most beautiful mosque in Gujarat, the Jama Masjid or the Jami Masjid took around 25 years to be constructed . The mosque is bound to awe you with its scintillating Indo-Islamic architecture. While on one hand you have the classic Islamic arches and on the other, you will find the jharokha style of windows and balconies that are typical of Gujarati and Rajasthani havelis.

Built-in 1523, Jami Masjid of Champaner was one of the main mosques used by the residents of the fortress. It is quite big with around 172 pillars and seven mihrabs (prayer niches). There is a separate area enclosed by jhali (perforated screens) for the women to pray. The mosque also, has a tomb that belongs to the priest of Jama Masjid. Close to that is a small tank for ablutions.

The Mihrabs themselves, are a fusion of architectural styles with the basic prayer niche in its classic arch shape and the insides of it carved with designs typical of Hindu or Jain temples. You will find floral etchings intertwined around the classic pots and creepers. Look up at the roof when you are inside the Jama Masjid and you will spot the quintessential designs of a Jain temple like the one in Ranakpur .

The most impressive and my favorite part of the Champaner Jama Masjid was its e ntrance porch which is enclosed by jhalis and is open on the top. The entire space exudes a majestic aura. The open roof might not have been by design. Possibly a dome covered it but the absence of it in the current state adds to its charm.

If you have been to any of the Ahmedabad mosques like Jama Masjid on the Ahmedabad heritage walk or the Sayyed Siddique mosque, you will be able to spot the similarities in the intricate designs of the Champaner Mosque and its equally mesmerizing minarets.

Sheher ki Masjid (Sahar ki Masjid)

Close to the Jami Masjid is a mosque meant for the use of the royal family. This is what has been named Shahar ki Masjid – though literally, the name means the mosque of the city . This has 2 minarets and five mihrabs within it. The entire structure has been built on a raised platform.

Kevada Masjid & cenotaph

Personally, I found this mosque better than Sahar ki Masjid. It is a little off the usual path in the Champaner Pavagadh park and you will have to pass a narrow road, almost hidden by the overgrown hedges.

Kevada mosque was built during the reign of Mahmud Begada and has multiple domes . The central one has fallen but the rest are still intact. What makes it unusual are the aesthetic balconies that have pillars. The carvings on the three mihrabs follow the Indo-Islamic theme and have very distinct Hindu designs within them.

The mosque is a two-storeyed one, built on a rectangular raised platform. In front of it, is a lovely cenotaph with fluted pillars. The complex also, housed a tank for ablutions.

Nagina Masjid

The one mosque that I had marked on my itinerary of the Champaner Pavagadh archaeological park was the Nagina Mosque. This mosque is located even further than Kevada mosque and since it was almost time to leave, we had to skip it.

With 3 minars, the Nagina mosque is renowned for its artistic walls and windows. The masjid has 80 pillars and 10 cupolas . The distinguishing feature of this place in Champaner is the intricately carved cenotaph in its complex. I believe, it is a sight to behold.

Ek Minar Mosque

The name itself belies what you can expect at this mosque of Champaner Pavagadh. The mosque was built by Bahadur Shah – the last reigning Sultan of Champaner. Most of the structure has gone but what remains is a single minaret.

Lila Gumbaj ki Masjid

With three entrances and minarets, the Lila Gumbaj ki Masjid is another one of those places to visit in Champaner Gujarat. It is believed that its dome was glazed and used to shine bright in the sun.

Other mosques of Champaner, Gujarat

If you have the time, you can look up these other mosques. Many of them are not well maintained but each of them has their own characteristic.

• Kamani Masjid – Most of the roof has collapsed but its pillared structure makes it a unique place to visit.
• Khajuri Masjid – opposite the Kabutar Khana
• Bawaman Mosque

Temples of Champaner archaeological park

There are at least two major Hindu temples and seven Jain temples located in this archaeological park. Most of these are located on Pavagadh hill. Visiting them will take you at least half a day. You will need to drive from the foothill towards the parking area of Kalika Mata temple. The rest of your journey will be on foot.

There are no entrance fees or tickets to be bought to visit these temples of Pavagadh-Champaner.

Kalika Mata Temple, Pavagadh

Also called the Mahakali Mandir , this living temple is right at the peak of the Pavagadh hill. One has to either climb 1800 steps to traverse a distance of 5 kms or take the modern ropeway (Udan Khatola) to a point from which they need to just climb 300 steps.

This temple is the one that is believed to be the divine Shaktipeeth where Goddess Sati’s right toe had fallen. The deity is said to have been worshipped by the Bhil people and legend has it that Goddess Mahakali had disguised herself to visit the place when the Kirti Chauhans were in power. As she was dancing, the then-in-charge of Champaner – Patal Jaisinh got mesmerized by her beauty and attempted to hold her hand. After warning him thrice, the Goddess cursed him that his kingdom would soon fall. And indeed, he lost his kingdom to Mahmud Begada.

The original shrine has a central idol of Kalika Mata along with Goddess Kali on her right and Bahucharmata (Goddess of fertility) to her left. This shrine has still been left intact while the outer temple has been rebuilt recently. In fact, it was PM Modi who inaugurated this new construction.

Built-in a typical Gujarati – Hindu architecture, you can admire the new temple for its lovely ceilings and carved walls. The journey to the temple with its ropeway and local markets lining the path itself is quite an experience. You will literally feel the intense devotion and faith that people have toward this temple.

On the way, don’t miss the Dudhia Talav – a lake that is possibly named for its clear water that was said to have been milky white ( Dudh means milk ) in its hey-days.

Lakulisa Temple

The Lakulisa temple is one of those monuments of Champaner park that is in ruins. It is not well maintained and can be found along Dudhiya Talav. Sadly, it was something I missed on my tour of Champaner, Gujarat. I believe, even in its dilapidated state, you can see gorgeous carvings of various Gods on its exterior façade. There is also, a carving of Lakulisa – an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva in the temple.

Jain temples of Champaner

There are seven Jain temples in Champaner Gujarat – of which two are very active and highly revered. These two are located closer to the foothills of Pavagadh hill, near Champaner. While I could not visit those, I did spot the Adinath Jain temple while climbing up to the Mahakali Mata Mandir. The temple is a small one with just a single shrine.

The other temple called the Suparshanath Digambar Jain Mandir , which is still functional. You can see it near the Dudhia Talav when you climb toward the Kalika Mata Temple. The temple exudes a calm vibe and has a lovely marble shrine.

Gates of Champaner Pavagadh fort

If you are visiting a citadel enclosed within a fort, then you can expect to pass mighty gates with security. It was no surprise when I entered Champaner from Ahmedabad via the Vadodara highway that I had to pass through one of them. Called the City gate , this is one of the many gateways of Champaner fort.

The arched gate has two guard rooms on either side. You can see the remnants of what might have been the outer fort walls adjoining the gate – one end leading up Pavagadh hill. The other gates of Champaner Pavagadh fort are located along the hill. These include the following –

• Atak Gate – right at the foothill
• Budhiya gate with three arched gates
• Buland Darwaza
• Makai gate – with an iron bridge

There are many other gates that you will spot on the hill and even inside the main fort area of Champaner. If possible, step out and check them out. Many of them even have bastions built alongside them.

Saat Kaman – the viewpoint of Champaner fort

Saat means Seven and Kaman refers to arches . This Champaner attraction is an arched passageway that might have been part of a larger fort structure. The gorgeous yellow sandstone area was used as a strategic lookout point by the army. Only 6 of the seven arches survive today. However, you can still walk through those arches and gaze down at the valley below.

Keep an eye out for the catapult stand near the Saat Kaman. The size of it will make you realize how big the attacking rocks or cannonballs might have been.

Water harvesting and storage structures

Most towns are created around a river or a larger source of water. Take Hampi itself which was established around the mighty Tungabhadra river. However, in Champaner there was no big river. Instead, there are several natural ponds or Talavs around the place. It is this along with the ingenious construction of stepwell and tanks that helped this fortress town thrive for 23 years.

Helical stepwell

While most of the tanks and stepwells are in ruins, the one that you can still see is the Helical stepwell near the City gate . Devoid of the ornate sculptures that are found in the other Gujarat stepwell like Adalaj Vav (incidentally completed by Mahmud Begada himself), this one will appeal to you for its spiral staircase that takes you right to the water hole. When viewed from the top, it gives you an appearance of a whirlpool.

One of the most beautiful stepwell that was finished by Mahmud Begada was the Adalaj stepwell in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The place has its own haunting tale.

Vada Talao – the Sunset point

Many of the natural ponds still exist. In fact, I have already mentioned the Dudhia Talao that is near the Kalika Mata Mandir. While you can always stop at the others are you pass them, the one pond that you could mark for the end of your day in Champaner Pavagadh archaeological park is the Vada Talao. This is on the highway itself and faces Pavagadh hill. It has a structure built in the center of the pond and is a perfect place to enjoy a sunset in Champaner Gujarat .  

The Royal palaces of Champaner park

Most of the palace areas have long fallen into ruins. Recent excavations have revealed a structure called as the Amiri Manzil but the same is out of bounds. These are near the Nagina mosque and hence, I could not get a glimpse of the same.

The closest you can get to the royal mansions is a small structure called the Kabutar Khana.

Kabutar Khana

Kabutar Khana or the pigeon house is right on the main road by the Vada Talav. There are actually two buildings that are separated by the road. The pavilion that is away from the lake used to be like a Summer palace . The open pavilion was cooled by the breeze from the pond and it is believed that the Sultan used to relax here in the company of the pigeons that he raised in the other structure, currently across the road.

Other Champaner attractions

A lot of discoveries are still being made and many have not yet been documented. As you explore the archaeological park of Champaner Pavagadh, you are bound to spot a few dominant structures. These include –

• Royal Mint and Armoury – You can see these when you are on the ropeway or near the Saat Kaman
• Sakar Khan’s Dargah
• Bhadra gates
• Navalakha Kothar (on Pavagadh hill)

The Champaner Pavagadh archaeological park is open from 8 am to 5 pm every day. The Kalika Mata Temple is open longer from 6 am to 7 pm.

I highly recommend using a car or a bike to get around Champaner-Pavagadh. It is not possible to walk to all the places. There are not many autos available in Champaner either.

• Sadly, there are no guides available here. You will have to rely on the documented plaques at the various attractions.
• Carry a wide-angle lens along with your regular lens for photography.
• The best time to capture these monuments is early morning when the park opens or post-noon. You can plan your itinerary such that you use the noon time to explore Pavagadh hill and the Kalika Mata Temple.
• It is best to rent a car – either in Ahmedabad or in Vadodara. Champaner is a small town and you will not be able to get one on hire here.
• Most of these tourist attractions are not crowded. The only one that is likely to be is the Kalika Mata Mandir
• A light shawl or sweater is recommended for the early hours. The rest of the day is generally pleasant and regular cotton clothes will suffice. Flat shoes is a must.
• Carry a lot of water when exploring the place.

We would definitely want to visit the Champaner-Pavagadh archaeological park and see the only pre-Mughal Islamic city that still survives. Stunning to think it dates back to the Stone Age. What an interesting history over the years. Good to know we might need 2-3 days to visit and to learn that some of the sites are quite far apart. This would require some planning for sure. So much variety in the things to see. Good to make a plan of the things you don’t want to miss. Another amazing UNESCO site to explore in India.

Sadly, I have not seen a lot of Gujarat. I would love to see Champaner. The sculpted ceilings are amazing. The intricately carved motifs make it so attractive. And keeping your advice in mind, I would keep more than a day and also probably find a native to accompany me. That Helica stepwell does look a little scary from the top. I have seen so many red structures in the north, that the yellow ones seem like a real novelty.

Oh no! I feel bad you had to miss a mosque you wanted to see. That’s how traveling goes sometimes, though. Also, the history of the area is really interesting. It seems like a lot of folks wanted control of the area. I was just in India and am fascinated by the number of UNESCO sites. They’re all so lovely and stately!

So many gorgeous UNESCO sites to see! I can see why Champaner Archaelogical Park would be at the top of the list. The incredible architecture and intricate details of the mosques are just stunning. Who would have thought that buildings of that era could be so well-crafted?

I am impressed by the UNESCO sites in Gujarat! I have not done much of traveling in Gujarat except to Dwarka many years ago. I would love to visit Champaner Archaelogical Park someday. The motifs and the ceiling architecture look amazing. Kalika Mata Temple architecture looks totally unique. I would love to visit Helical stepwell – certainly not for those with fear of heights! 🙂

What a wonder to see the Champaner pavadagh archaeological park. It feels like being back in time wandering through a time machine to see these beautiful structures built from the past. I am awed by the Jama and Kevada Masjid. I would love to visit the Saat Kaman and walk through its six remaining archways and the Helical Stepwell is just ripe for a photo opportunity. Love the history lesson behind the places as well!

The Champaner-Pavagadh archaeological park Gujarat looks so big, you would definitely need at least a day to see it all. It’s good to know that the name refers to two different areas, and not just one. It’s amazing how well preserved the sites and the buildings are. You can really imagine how life here in the past used to be, just by walking around the sites. The architecture of the Jama Masjid is so beautful, with all those intricate elements sculpted in the stones. It’s good that there is an easier way now to reach Kalika Mata Temple, with the cable car. I can’t imagine climbing so many steps, especially during the hot months.

I love visiting UNESCO sites and learning about their history. The archeological site of Champaner-Pavagadh looke amazingly well-preserved and interesting. I love sited where you can see different religious influences like Hinduism, Islam and Jain. And the helical steps are such a bummer picture motif!

I’m impressed seeing the combined Hindu and Islamic architecture at the mosques in Champaner. I wonder if people are still praying there. The temples look gorgeous, but the Helical Stepwell intrigued me more. I can’t imagine how they found the pond, dug the dirt around it, and built a beautiful stepwell to the water. If I’m not mistaken, there’s a stepwell similar to this, too. Unfortunately, I don’t recall the name of the temple.

This scenic hilltop may have been fortified as early as the 8th century. Today, throngs of pilgrims ascend Pavagadh to worship at the important Kalikamata Temple , dedicated to the evil-destroying goddess Kali, who sits atop the summit. You can walk up the pilgrim trail (two to three hours), or take a shuttle (₹20) halfway up the hill from along the Champaner citadel's south wall, from where a cable car glides you to within a 700m walk of the temple.

Pavagadh became the capital of the Chauhan Rajputs around 1300 but in 1484 was taken by the Gujarat sultan Mahmud Begada after a 20-month siege; the Rajputs committed jauhar (ritual mass suicide) in the face of defeat.

Near the top of the hill are Pavagadh’s oldest surviving monument, the 10th- to 11th-century Hindu Lakulisha Temple , and several Jain temples. The views are fantastic and so, if you’re lucky, are the cooling breezes. At weekends the usual flow of pilgrims can become a flood and it can take half a day to reach the Lakulisha Temple. But if you think that's chaotic, just try coming over the nine days of Navratri or during the Mahakali festival .

A mere forty seven kilometers from Baroda, the archeologically rich heritage of Pavagadh is situated surrounding a lush green mountainous region in the state of Gujarat . In the year 2006, it was decreed as a world heritage site due to its ancient architectural significance, resulting in a gradual increase of tourism and archaeological study. Pavagadh is famous for its picturesque surroundings and various buildings dating as far back as 11th century, making it an ideal location for study of the history of that region. Here are some of the most popular destinations in Pavagadh :

1. Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park

The entire township of Champaner-Pavagadh is essentially an archaeological park that is so vast and scattered that it has grown into a township. Built by the ruler of Gujarat, Sultan Mahmud Begada, this park has religious buildings of both the Hindu and Muslim faith. Other than this, ancient forts and other buildings stand strong till today, including structures like palaces, entrance gates, arches, tombs, residential complexes, agricultural structures and water installations.

2. Mahakali Temple

Pavagadh is abundant in religious buildings that are located throughout this region. Every corner of this small town houses architectural marvels in the form of temples and mosques. The famed Mahakali Temple is the most prominent of all the temples in the region and is situated at 550 meters above ground level. Staircases have been carved into the rocky terrains of the mountain for ease of travel by pilgrims and tourists. On either side of the temple at the mountain base, the twin lakes of Teliya Talab and Dudhia Talab can be seen.

3. Manchi Fort

En route from Baroda, Manchi Fort is one of the first sights that one encounters as a sign of entering Pavagadh. This fort was home to the armed forces of the Solanki Kingdom and is now considered a world heritage site. A lot of work has been carried out in the maintenance and upkeep of this monument. In today’s day, you can observe the enormous gates of this monument and explore the vicinity where the Solanki once walked. Although in ruins, some of the building walls are still intact and can be viewed by the tourists.

4. Navlakha Kothar

Although exploring the scattered expanses of Pavagadh would be a herculean task but going an extra mile is what a traveler passionately seeks in his journeys. A small mountainous trek away from the Old Jain Temple is the Navlakha Kothar . This is a group of dome shaped buildings that were once used as granaries for the Solankian armies. This building is a spot on example of the cultivation and storage practices of the past civilizations. The Navlakha Kothar is surrounded mostly by rocks and sand and is built on the edge of a steep cliff with a panoramic view of the vast valley and open skies.

5. Vishwamitri River

There are many water bodies in the Pavagadh region that provide nourishment to the forests and supply abundant flow for the locals. Besides this, the beauty and serenity one experiences following the trail of river Vishvamitri is unparalleled. Pavagadh, also known as Pavagarh or Pavagadh Mahakali Mandir near Vadodara and Champaner is a Shakti Peeth and a major Hindu pilgrimage of Gujarat in West India .

The famous Mahakali Temple , which is a spiritual magnet in this region beckoned us. The Kalika Mata Temple, perched on the Pavagadh Hill or Mataji’s hills offers spectacular views of the ground below.

Located in Panchmahal district near Vadodara, every day the devotees queue up on the ropeway station while some prefer to trek up the road.

Not only does crores of Hindu devotees visit Pavagadh, but it is also popular with educational institutes who conduct their excursion programs here.

It was not even in my plan. I think the place chose me. That is how it always happens with me when it comes to spiritual places. Whether it is the epic Kailash Mansarovar Yatra in Tibet or Vaishno Devi Mandir in Jammu, I have always ended up visiting these holy places without any plan as I normally do.

Nomenclature/Etymology of Pavagadh

Pavagadh is also spelt as Pavagarh.

Both Pavagadh and Pavagarh are used interchangeably in this blog. Both of them mean the same.

Why is Pavagadh famous?

This tribal area , inhabited mainly by the Rathwas , is very popular as a Hindu pilgrimage . More than 25 lakh pilgrims visit Pavagarh every year. The Hindus visit Pavagarh for the famous Kalika Mata Temple , a Mahakali Mandir while the Muslims visit a Dargah , which is also located on the Pavagarh Hill, in close proximity to the temple.

Baiju Bawra from the 16 th century, the medieval dhrupad musician and a contemporary rival of Tansen , hailed from Champaner. Pavagadh is also known for its famous ropeway which is very popular with both kids and adults.

The nearby Champaner , teeming with ancient Islamic monuments is popular with history buffs. Pavagarh has its roots in ancient Triassic Period . Since Pavagarh is a short distance from Vadodara, it is very popular with Hindu pilgrims where rush hour is every hour.

Legend of Curse of Mahakali

Here is all you wanted to know about the legend of Pavagadh. As per the local beliefs Goddess Mahakali disguised as a woman, danced in Garba celebration during Navratri period. The last Patai known as Jaisinh Rawal from the Patai Raval Family who ruled here after King Vanraj Chavda (746 C.E. to 780 C.E.), watched her dance with a roving eye.

Enraged with the dirty looks of Jaisinh, Goddess Mahakali cursed him that his empire will soon see downfall and destruction.

Who is the king of Pavagadh? King Vanraj Chavda was the original founder of Champaner, in memory of Champa , his able minister. Hinduism is full of such interested episodes which make travelling in India so different.

History of Pavagadh: Who attacked and destroyed Champaner?

As predicted, Mahmud Begada , a Muslim invader from 15 th century, soon attacked Pavagarh and killed Jaising. He started his rule here and even shifted his capital from Ahmedabad to Pavagarh temporarily.

Mahmud Begada commissioned umpteen buildings in the Champaner region, many of which still stand today as a witness to the gory past of the place. The well maintained and still surviving Kevda mosque, Jama Masjid, Nagina Mosque, Uohra Mosque etc were built at the foot of Pavagadh on a foundation of bloodshed and unimaginable violence.

While these monuments are located at a walking distance from each other, Palace of Begada is situated near Vad Talav aka banyan pond, 2 kms away from Champaner. This place sure has a rich history which is little known to the outside world.

Where is Pavagadh located?

A gateway to Panchmahal, Pavagarh is located in Panchmahal district near Vadodara, a big city in Gujarat. Located on the top of a hill, it offers sweeping bird’s eye views, especially, from Halol.

Since Pavagarh is situated in a Tribal region , Mr. Hari Parikh established Rangpur Ashram, which takes care of the welfare of tribal people. Pavagadh is also a source of the Vishwamitri river .

What is the height of Pavagarh Hill?

This is one of the commonly asked questions on Pavagadh. Total height of Pavagarh Hill is around 2700 feet or 822 meters which is why the scenery from here is visually stunning.

Who is Maa Kali?

Which goddess is there in Pavagadh? Mahakali, also known as just Kali, is the dusky mother, whom Hindus love and worship since times immemorial. The Hindu deity who is much loved by Hindus is a ferocious form of Durga maa. Even the great holy Indian saints such as Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa and Swami Vivekananda were her famous devotees.

This Hindu deity Mahakali has a fearful appearance what with her 4 arms carrying a human skull cap kapala , a severed head, a trishul or trident and a khadga (sword), I do not remember any other religion except Sanatan Dharma where women are so powerful!

It is believed that Maa Kali was born out of the brow of Maa Durga, when she was involved in a war with the evil forces. Though worshiped all over India by Hindus, Maa Kali holds a special place in the Socio-Cultural-Political milieu of West Bengal in East India .

Inside Maa Mahakali Mandir

Which goddess is worshipped in Pavagadh? Maa Mahakali Mandir is the top place to see in Pavagadh. Needless to say, thousands of Hindu devotees visit Pavagadh every day.

As the crowd pushed and shoved, I managed to have a good darshan of Maa Kali . Here is what I saw inside the Maa Mahakali Temple. Maa Kali here has been represented with 4 arms. While she carries the severed head of a demon in one hand, she wields a sword or sickle in another.

Her 3 rd and 4 th hands are raised in a blessing like mudra , as if protecting the devout from any evil forces. Two more severed heads dangle from her ears. While human skulls serve as her garland, a girdle of severed hands wrap around her waist. Her red eyes, face and breasts are awash with blood and her red tongue protrudes.

And she stands on the chest of Shiv Bhagwan with one foot even as her other foot lies over his thigh. Shiv ji is her beloved husband.

Pavagadh Mahakali Temple is open every day from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Mahakali temple is open 365 days a year.

Festivals of Pavagadh

Two big Hindu festival of West Bengal – Navratri and Dushehra are associated with Maa Kali. Expect huge crowds in Pavagadh during the Hindu festival of Navratri and Dushehra.

About Kailkamata Temple

Believed to be one of the 51 holy Shakti Peeths of the world, Kalikamata temple has been a major Hindu Pilgrim centre since times immemorial. The temple is perched on the top of a cliff, surrounded by dense jungles. Located at a height of 1523 feet or 550 meters, The temple can be reached by either feet or ropeway.

Also known as the holy Maa Mahakali Temple, the pre historic Goddess has been worshiped by Hindus since thousands of years. It is believed that if you ask for a wish here, it is fulfilled by Maa Kali.

Mazaar in Maa Mahakali Temple

As is common with many Hindu temples , you can almost always see an Islamic structure nearby, thanks to years of invasion by Muslims from Turkey , Uzbekistan etc. Maa Mahakali Temple is no exception. The dargah of Pavagadh is another top place to visit in Pavagadh.

While the Hindu shrine is located on the ground floor, the top part is occupied by an Islamic Mazaar aka sacred grave of Muslims .

I noticed the saffron existing with the green and more than a case of brotherhood and religious fraternity, it seemed like invasion. I mean, what is a mazaar doing at the top of a holy temple which existed before the mazaar.

Much like Islamic destruction in Kashi, Mathura and Ayodhya, this might have been a result of invasion by Muslims here as well.

Is Pavagarh a Shakti Peeth?

Many people ask if Pavagadh is a Shakti Peeth? Well, during my visit here, I saw many government boards stating that Pavagadh is indeed one of the 51 Shaktipeeths around the world.

During a tumultuous episode, the mortal body of Mahashakti Devi Sati had split into 51 pieces and fell on 51 different places, including present Pakistan, Tibet, Bangladesh and Nepal. The places where these body parts fell are major Hindu pilgrimages now.

As per the claim of the board, the fingers of right leg of Maa Sati fell on Pavagadh, thus making it one of the Shakti Peeths . It is also said that impressed with the strict penance or Kathor Tapasya of Maharishi Vishwamitra, Shri Kalika Maa presented herself physically and fulfilled his wishes.

Ambaji Gabbar Parvat Mahima

The nearby Gabbar Parbat , also in Gujarat is one of the main 51 Shakti Peeths of the world. It is also known as Hridaya Peeth because the heart of Sati Mata fell here. Hridaya means heart. Even today the footprints of Maa Amba ji and the marks of Chariot wheel are present at Gabbar Hill.  

Hindus firmly believe that during ancient times, in order to kill demon King Ravan, Maa Amba had presented Shri Ram with the Ajay Baan on the very same Gabbar Hill. It is that that this baan or arrow was instrumental in killing Ravan . It is interesting to find places related to Hindu epic Ramayan during my travels.

Even the chaulkarm or mundan ceremony of Shri Krishna from another Hindu epic Mahabharat also happened on Gabbar Hill.

It is common to see women tying holy thread on the Paras Peepal tree on Gabbar Hills to protect their family and attract prosperity.

Gabbar Hill is located just 305 kilometres and 5 hours and 20 minutes away from Pavagadh on the Modasa Godhra Highway . The views from Gabbar Hill are as breath-taking as the views from the Pavagadh Hills.

Soul Window Interesting facts

Did you know that one Shaktipeeth is located in Tibet as well? Present in the form of a stone slab, the Dakshayani Shakti Peeth is present near Kailash Parbat , the home of Bhagwan Shiva . The right hand of Sati Mata had fallen here. Devi Dakshayani is known for destroying Daksha Yagya .

Maa Mahakalika Udankhatola Ropeway

‘Most Modern Ropeway of India’ Screamed a yellow and black board. My experience of availing the ropeway facility, which is operational since the year 1986 was good.

The ropeway was of very good quality, at least much better than what I had seen in Rajgir in Bihar . But not as good as the best Indian ropeway I had taken at the famous Vaishno Devi Mata in Jammu . The Gondola ride at Gulmarg falls somewhere in between.

It is the quickest and most comfortable way to arrive at the hill top near Maha Kalika Temple from Manchi. It is also the best thing to do in Pavagadh Gujarat.

It takes only 5-6 minutes to reach Kailkamata Temple via a ropeway, officially known as Maa Mahakalika Udan Khotala Ropeway. However, we spent a lot of time just waiting to board this passenger ropeway. There is always a long queue for not only darshan at the temple, but also at the Maa Mahakalika Udan Khotala.

We waited between metal rods (to keep the crowds in control), using the time to talk sweet nothings, chat or just boasting about our Gujarat trip live on Instagram. Still bored?

Just buy Mango Dolly, Zulubar or Choco Cones from the Ice Cream shops aka ‘Refreshment Zones’ near queues and make the kids go red with envy. Taking a ride on ropeway is an exciting thing to do with family and kids. Many people take the ropeway ride just for the experience.

This ropeway is operational since the year 1986. The ropeway starts from Manchi and ends at Maha Kalika Mandir. The same distance when covered by foot takes around 1 hour. The rope way facility is limited however. Once it ends, you need to climb up an easy 250 stairs from here. Even if you can walk, taking the ropeway is the most unusual things to do in Pavagadh.

Washrooms are present, so if it takes too long, you can jump on (or bend under) the rods, take a leak and join back the queue. Washrooms are also located at several places throughout the walking path of Pavagadh.

Carrying capacity of ropeway: 400 people in 1 hour

Regular: INR 98 per person

This is suitable for walk in individual visits like mine. Includes both ‘to and fro’ tickets.

Students: INR 686 per person

This is discounted ticket price for up to 8 students. Includes ‘to and fro’.

Concession : INR 65 per person

This discounted ‘to and fro’ ticket applies for war widows and differently abled people.

Package : INR 178 per person

This includes one ‘to and from’ ticket to both Kalidevi at Pavagadh as well as the Shakti Peeth Amba ji.

Annual Pass: INR 840

Many people keep coming to Pavagadh frequently on occasions such as Ashtami, Purnima and weekends. This annual ticket pass is for them. It is valid for 12 ‘to and fro’ rides on the Pavagarh udankhatola.

It is a huge water reservoir in the Pavagarh complex. This lesser-known place is secret sightseeing attraction of Pavagadh. Do not miss it!

Ancient Jain Temples of Pavagadh

Built entirely of white marbles, the ancient Jain Temples , which were overlooked by the Hindu pilgrims , who were tired yet the focussed caught my attention. Dating back to 14 th and 15 th century, the Jain temples give a glimpse of amazing architecture and designs prevalent in ancient medieval India .

We stopped at Shri Lavkush Charan Digambar Jain Mandir and the nearby Shri Suparśvanātha Digambar Jain Temple built in reverence to Suparśvanātha – the 7 th Jain Tirthankar. Jain and Hindu temple have always co-existed beautifully, at times making it hard for some to differentiate between the two.

Constructed out of pure white stone, the temples stand out with its inimitable aesthetics. Most notable are standing and seated images of Jain deities.

It reminded me of elaborate Jain temples of Mumbai and Rajasthan . Gods from the Jain pantheon can also be seen on the external walls of the temples. The 3 main types of Jain temples located on the Pavagadh Hills are as under:

• One Group is located near the Dudhia Tank, close to the Pārśva temple. This group of temples are in the southeast direct of Pavagarh Hills.
• Second Group of Jain Temples are called as Navalakka Temples. The Bhavanaderi Temples present here are located near the Naqqarkhana gate.
• Third Group of Jain Temples are devoted to Chandraprabhu and Tirthankaras Suparshvanatha .

Swetamber Jain Temple is another unexplored place of Pavagadh.

Pavagadh: A Pre-Historic Site

Pavagadh is ancient! Many pre-historic stone tools have been recovered in and around Pavagadh hills, indicating the fragments of stone age present here. It reminded me of pre-historic sites I saw in Bhimbhetka in Madhya Pradesh and pre-historic Rock paintings in Chattisgarh .

Champaner and Pavagadh are christened after the geographical features of the area, viz. the light-yellow colour of the rocks accompanied by a dash of red. The red resembles the Champaka flowers, hence the name. The entire region is still just rocks and forests, peppered with devout Hindus climbing up and down from the hill.

Interesting facts

Did you know that history of the establishment of Champaner dates back to 8 century C.E.? It was set up by the Chauda dynasty .

Since this region is punctuated with architectural marvels , we didn’t end our trip with our visit to Pavagadh. There are many popular picnic spots near Pavagadh.

In fact, the famous Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park is the only UNESCO World Heritage Site of Gujarat. Needless to say, this region is protected by Archaeological Survey of India or ASI.

Dhaba Dungri :Located between Pavagadh and Halol, Dhaba Dungri is a famous temple of Shiv Bhagwan . Known as the “Tapobhumi” of Maharshi Vishwamitra, it is thronged by Hindu pilgrims on a daily basis.

Ponds: The ponds located here are some of the unusual places to see in Pavagadh. Telia Talav, Vada Talav and Dudhia Talav are the nearby ponds, located on the foot of Pavagarh. Kabootar Khana is also located nearby. These are also free thing to do in Pavagadh.

Virasat Van gardens are located at the footsteps of Pavagarh hills. It is an offbeat place to see near Pavagarh.

Bhadrakali Temple

Seven Arches or Saat Kamaan

While descending down from Pavagadh, we came across ruins of Saat Kaman, the literal meaning of which is seven arches. 1 arch has been lost to time. Only 6 arches remain here, hidden behind dense jungles of the hills.

A palace here existed once too, but it is now destroyed and buried under the ground. We stopped here to catch our breaths, take some pictures and soak in the breath-taking view of the heritage forest around us.

This architectural monument is built entirely of stone. Seven Arches is located away from the crowds on a hill towards the south of Champaner. Saat Kamaan is a must-see place near Pavagadh, sandwiched between the Saddan Shah and Budhia Gate of Pavagadh.

Atak Dwar is an old entrance gate. Ruins near Atak Dwar are also worth a visit.  Located on the Pavagarh hills, remnant of medieval catapults are found here. This represents the military practises prevalent in those times. Ruins at South Bhadra Gate is also significant.

Champaner Pavagarh Archaeological Park

I enjoyed my visit to the offbeat Champaner Pavagarh Archaeological Park, which was announced as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 2004. A local NGO had lobbied for a whooping 20 years to get the UNSECO tag for Champaner.

What is Champaner Pavagarh Archaeological Park famous for? You can see the early Islamic and pre-Mughal city in Champaner. This was during one of the earliest Islamic attacks on India. This is a popular tourist place.

Do visit the grand Laxmi Niwas Palace, Kirti Mandir etc. Vadodara is located just 55 kms away from Pavagadh. Vadodara is a nice weekend destination from Mumbai and Ahmedabad. There are many points of attractions located here.

Ahmedabad or Karnavati

Karnavati or Ahmedabad is a must-visit city and capital of Gujarat. Ahmedabad is located 185 kms away from Pavagadh.

Little Rann of Kutch

Also known as Wild Ass sanctuary, it is a hidden gem near Ahmedabad. This major attraction is a must-visit place. If you are into wildlife, then you can also travel to Gir National Park which is the only home to Asiatic Lions in India.

Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary

This is an offbeat destination for birdwatchers. Located near Ahmedabad, it is also a famous picnic spot for locals.

Known for its white revolution of India that transformed the dairy industry of India. Anand is located 80 kms away from Pavagadh. This place is off the beaten track.

Do visit the ruins of Rawal Palace in Machi and let the stories, drama and poems on Patai Rawal grow on you. It is an unheard-of place.

I am a major fan of vegetarian and vegan food of Gujarat. I was excited to taste some local delicacies of Gujarat in Pavagarh. Pavagadh has few ATMs. Neither is digital currency popular here. It is better to withdraw some cash from Vadodara or Mumbai, Pune and Ahmedabad before you start your Pavagarh tour.

Pavagadh is a year-round destination. The Hindu devotees do Pavagadh tour throughout the year in large numbers.

Monsoon : During monsoon, one can expect many tourist attractions such as voluptuous waterfalls in and around Pavagadh hill. It was however dry when we visited.

Winter: Winter is the best time to visit Pavagadh because the weather is pleasant and temperatures are low.

Summer: Expect high temperatures and unfavorable weather in summer. That however does not deter the real devotee of Maa.

What to wear in Pavagadh?

The winters of West India are not as cold as winters of North India and North East India . You can wear light cotton clothes throughout the year, when visiting Pavagadh and Vadodara. Carry light woolen clothes if you are prone to cold weather in winter months.

What can I do in 1 day in Pavagadh?

We did a one-day tour to Pavagadh as a weekend destination from Vadodara and Mumbai. It is easy to make a half day tour to Pavagadh too. We visited Pavagadh followed by Champaner Pavagadh Archaeological Park after lunch on the same day. If you skip Champaner, then you can easily have darshan of Maa in 2-3 hours or half day.

What can I do in 2 days in Pavagadh?

Autorickshaws and local public buses are easily available in and around Pavagadh, Champaner and Vadodara. These are low cost and have good frequency.

My practical advice is to club Pavagadh, Champaner and Vadodara in one trip. Visit 3 three major tourist attractions as a weekend getaway from places like Mumbai, Pune, Surat or Ahmedabad aka Karnavati.

By air: Nearest airport from Pavagadh is at Vadodara.Othernearbyinternationalairports are located at Mumbai and Ahmedabad.

By rail: Nearest railway station from Pavagadh is at Vadodara. We arrived in Vadodara from Mumbai . We stayed in Vadodara and enjoyed the Garba festival, visited all the major attractions and filled our faces with great vegetarian food before booking a car to Pavagadh one morning.  

By Bus : We took a bus up to the plateau called Machi Haveli, which has an altitude of 1607 feet or 490 meters. From Machi, you can take a ropeway ride up to the stairs to the Mahakali Temple. The bus was full so we had to stand which I didn’t mind because we are young and the bus ride is short.

Internal Transport in Pavagadh

State Transport bus services are easily and frequently available for Manchi from both Pavagarh Bus Stand and Halol.

You can alternatively also hire a private taxi or hop on to shared jeeps and autorickshaws which are cheaper from both Halol and Pavagadh.

Palki or Palanquin in Pavagadh

Palki or Palanquin in Pavagadh is also available at Pavagadh. People with medical conditions, senior citizens and differently abled people make use of Palki or Pallanquin in Pavagadh. It is carried by humas.

A Spiritual Journey To Kalika Mata Temple -Things To Do In Panchmahal District

The Shree Kalika Mataji Mandir which is believed to be one of the 51 Shakti Peethas draws thousands of visitors every day. Many of them undertake the more arduous task of climbing the 1800 steps to the top of the hill where the temple to the divine mother stands as a beacon of hope to its devotees. Young, and old, men, women, and children, flock for a glimpse of the Goddess who has been bestowing her benevolence on the faithful for many centuries.

If you are not up to climbing 1800 steps, do not worry, there is a modern ropeway with well-maintained cable cars that take you almost to the top. You would however have to climb around 300-odd steps.

The Mahakali Mandir, Pavagadh is the most sacred of places to visit near Halol Gujarat, and historically its origin is dated between the 10th and 11th centuries .

However, it is a holy centre for the Jain religion as well. Pavagadh is considered to be an important Jain Tirtha, one of the sacred places where Moksha or salvation can be attained.

There are three Jain temple complexes at Pavagadh which includes seven temples and a Dharamshala. The main temple that you come across on the way to the Mahakali temple is the Parshavnath temple. Many of the smaller Jain temples are in ruins today.

Be Awed By Saat Kaman – Tourist Attractions In Panchmahal District

One of the iconic and most recognized structures of Champaner is the monument known as Saat Kaman or Seven Arches . It is a structure that stands on the edge of a cliff and can be visited on the way to the Mahakali Temple at the peak of Pavagadh Hill.

Saat Kaman is a bastion built with yellow sandstone and stood as an important line of defence against invading armies. The place served as a military observation post as it commanded an excellent view of the land that stretches out below the cliff.

Stone cannon balls must have been hurled from here at invading forces using a unique catapult system. Today parts of the fortification and the seven arches stand as mute witnesses to the events that must have taken place centuries ago. What remains today are the seven arches that have been built in a radial pattern, an enduring example of the engineering skills of its builders.

Hill Fortress Of Pavagadh – Places To Visit Near Pavagadh

Rajasthan may be the state which has a UNESCO World Heritage Site classified as the Hill Forts of Rajasthan , however, Gujarat too has fortresses from where the echoes from history can be heard. Some of the prominent fortresses of Gujarat include the Uparkot Fort of Junagadh in Saurashtra  and the Pavagadh Hill Fortress in Champaner .

The Pavagadh fortress located on the Pavagadh Hills is considered to have been the most invincible of Gujarat’s ancient forts. The Pavagadh Hill which seems to suddenly crop up in the midst of plain land was an ideal location for a fortress with successive lines of fortifications that ensured different levels of security. The fortification walls were reinforced with bastions that had provisions for canons, catapults and other weapons and equipment of war.

Today, the ruins of the walls of the fortress, the entry gates, bastions, residential palaces, temples, cenotaphs, and mosques, are all that remain of what was once a safe sanctuary of the rulers of the region.

Places To Visit Near Champaner – Best Places To Visit In Panchmahal District

Champaner is the city that was established by Mahmud Begada in the 16th century . He named it Muhammadabad. However the capital of the Gujarat Sultanate, Muhammadabad had a short span of life, as the Mughals invaded it soon. However in its short span as the capital of Gujarat, Champaner under Mahmud Begada saw a spurt of building activity, and a series of mosques, cenotaphs, and residential quarters came up.

Today, the ruins of these structures stand as surviving examples of Indo-Islamic architecture, and it is believed that the site which is labelled as the Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park is the only surviving pre-Mughal Islamic city. The structures at Champaner are a beautiful example of the fusion of the elements of traditional Hindu and Islamic architecture .

There are more than 100 ruined monuments within the Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park , of which 39 are maintained by ASI (Archaeological Survey Of India). Moreover, there may be hundreds, if not thousands that have not been excavated yet!

You would need a week, if not more to completely explore Champaner and other best places to visit near Pavagadh. However, if you are on a one-day trip from Vadodara, or a two-day trip from Vadodara, Ahmedabad, or anywhere else, here are the main monuments that you can see in the Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park.

Visiting Exquisite Jama Masjid  

Champanerunder the rule of Mahmud Begada scaled the zeniths of architectural excellence, particularly when it comes to mosques. However, the most shining jewel among all the mosques in Champaner is the Jama Masjid or Jami Masjid .

The Jami Masjid of Champaner is believed to be one of the finest mosques in Gujarat and is one of the important places in the list of tourist attractions in the Panchmahal District. The Jama Masjid is a magnificent example of the fusion of Hindu and Islamic architectural design .

The mosque stands on an elevated platform and spans an area of about 3,600 sq metres. Intricate carvings, perforated stone-screen work, and meticulously designed porches, archways, and minarets raise the structure to a sublime level of beauty. When you are there do look out for the Kalpataru iconography on the ceiling in front of the Mihrab in the central prayer hall. You can find echoes of the Siddi Saiyyed Jali of Ahmedabad in the design of the mosque.

Jami Masjid of Champaner is a must-visit place.

Visit Shaher Ki Masjid – The Mosque Of The Royals

The Shaher Ki Masjid or the “mosque of the city,” is also spelt as Saher Ki Masjid in some places. This mosque was built exclusively for the members of the royal family to pray privately. Two minarets loom skywards on either side of a small arched doorway that leads to the main prayer hall which is a large pillared hall with 5 Mihrabs.

The structure has a series of domes on its roof and is a flat single-storeyed structure. It stands on a raised platform and has a landscaped garden in front of it. The Shaher Ki Masjid is another beautiful example of the seamless fusion of Hindu and Islamic styles of architecture .

Visit Kevada Masjid And Cenotaph

The Kevada Masjid is another of the important mosques within the Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park. As soon as you enter the premises, a cenotaph with four cupolas surrounding the central dome arrests your attention. The Cenotaph seems to take centre stage while the Kevda Masjid itself seems relegated to the background. However, as you walk closer, you notice that there is a huge open space between the cenotaph and the mosque.

The Kevda Masjid has a double-storeyed main prayer hall. The prayer hall is entered by an arched door which is flanked by a minaret on either side. Besides, the minarets are smaller arched doors. The main doorway and niches are embellished with beautiful carvings of flowers and other geometrical patterns. On either side of the minarets can be seen beautifully decorated windows with balconies. The Kevda Masjid is one of the beautiful structures that are strung together to form an exquisite garland of mosques at the Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park.

Helical Stepwell  

Champaner was dependent on wells for its water. Champaner was known as the city of a thousand wells . One of the unique step-wells that you should visit in Champaner is the Helical Stepwell . Though not as grandiose as the Rani Ki Vav in Patan, or as big as the Adalaj Ni Vav, and Dada Hari Ni Vav in Ahmedabad, this step-well has a unique design that is at the same time aesthetic as well as utilitarian. The Helical well has a spiral staircase that descends to the water like a coiled snake.

Kabutar Khana – Relaxation By The Lake

The Kabutar Khana is so named because of the number of pigeonholes on the upper walls of the structure. It stands on the edge of the lake known as Vada Talao or Bada Talao. It was a water pavilion or a resting place in the cool environs of the lake. The Kabutarkhana is located right opposite the Khajuri Masjid .

The old city of Champaner and its ruins have been described by UNESCO as: “The site is the only complete and unchanged Islamic pre-Mughal city.” Champaner is a fortified city, and people still live within the fort walls. The City Gate provides entry into the fortified city.

Champaner had a scarcity of water during the summer and winter months. To overcome this a system of reservoirs for rain harvesting had been created.

These included a series of lakes on Pavagadh Hill and large catchment reservoirs at the base of the hill. The Vada Talao is one of those water bodies. The lake offers a vantage point to witness the magic of the sun setting behind the hills.

Visit The Jhand Hanuman Temple

The small village of Jhand in Jambughoda located about 36 kilometres from Champaner has developed around the famous Jhand Hanuman Temple . The temple has a 21 feet tall image of Hanuman with Shanidev beneath his feet. The idol of Hanuman is swayambhu or self-emanated. According to local legend, Bhima, the Pandava prince prayed to Hanuman here for special powers so that he could vanquish Duryodhana in combat. Duryodhana had become invincible owing to the powers transferred to him by Gandhari.

Be Awed By Bhim Ni Ghanti

Not very far from the Jhand Hanuman temple, amidst an unusual landscape, stands a huge grinding stone . According to legend, this is the same grinding stone used by Bhima , the Pandava prince, when he along with his brothers and wife were in exile, and roaming in the forests.

Take A Look At Arjuna’s Well

A little distance from the Jhand Hanuman Temple stands a well, which locals say is always filled with water. Legend has it that while roaming in the forest, Draupadi felt thirsty, and Arjun used his skills of archery aimed at the ground and pierced it. Out came a spring of water which is known as Arjuna’s well . The well is believed to be the same water source that Arjuna created in the Mahabharata.

Take A Nature Walk At The Jambughoda Wildlife Sanctuary

If you love nature, you must take an early morning guided walk inside the Jambughoda wildlife sanctuary .

Though it is unlikely that you will spot a leopard, hyena, or any other wild animal, you are likely to see Nilgai, Deer, and plenty of peacocks. The forest laden with teak and other trees provides an unforgettable experience.

Experience The Sublime Magic of Pithora Wall Painting

Panchmahal is a tribal-dominated district and the Rathwa Adivasis are one of the main tribes in the region. Pithora paintings are not just objects of art, but they are objects of worship. Pithora painting is done on three walls of the room of the houses of the Rathwas in Narukot village .

The room is considered sacred once the paintings are done. The Pithora painting is dominated by horses, which symbolically represent their deity, Baba Pithora. Not all can have their walls painted with Pithora painting, they need to qualify for that, as it is a religious ritual. You can visit one of the villages where there is a Pithora painting and interact with the Rathwa tribals and understand more about their culture.

Visit Tuva-Timba Water Springs – Things To Do In Panchmahal District

The Tuva-Timba sulphur water springs are sure to astound you. They are located at a distance of about 25 kilometres from Godhra. While driving to the place we were looking forward to the Tuva Timba Hot Springs, but what we found was beyond our expectations.

We found more than 80 odd springs and astonishingly the water from each spring had different temperatures. Water from some was scalding hot, some had literally boiling water, lukewarm water gushed from some of the springs, while some had cold water. It is truly an amazing and intriguing phenomenon, considering that the springs are packed in close proximity to each other.

According to legends, the springs are associated with Shri Ram. It is believed that he generated these springs to cure the sage Sarbhanga of skin disease, by shooting an arrow at the ground.

Bhima’s Footsteps | Bhim Na Pagla

Inside the premises of Mahadev temple can be seen a pair of giant footsteps which are known as Bhim na pagla . These are believed to be those of Bhima. The footsteps are placed on a four-pillared open pavilion, known as Chabutro . It is believed that Bhim got married to Hidimba here.

Historic pavagadh hill, gujarat – unesco heritage.

Champaner and Pavagadh Hill are the words – I always heard together. It was one of the few UNESCO world heritage sites in India that I had not visited. So I planned my Gujarat trip to cover this and the newly included Rani ki Vav. It is only when I reached the site, some 45 km from Vadodara , I realized that Champaner is the village below the hill. The monuments are of course scattered all over the hill, on the foothill, and on top of the hill.

You can hear and read as many myths, legends, and stories about this place as the number of sources you access.

Pavagadh Hill

Almost everyone guided us to go on top of the hill first, before exploring the village below. We listened and reached the foothill to be told that cars are not allowed, as it was Navratri time. And a lot of people climb the hill on foot to reach the temple on top. However, there were ample Gujarat state transport buses to take you to a certain level on the hill called Machi.

Ropeway – Udal Khatola

From here there are two options – either take a ropeway called Udal Khatola to the top which takes about 6 mins on a steep hike. Or take the old route that goes around the hill through many man-made monuments that belong to different eras of mankind. And takes maybe 1-2 hours depending on your ability to climb. As you keep going up, the lush green hill starts appearing with its various ponds and lakes.

Temples atop the Pavagadh Hill

From the point where the ropeway drops you, there are another 250 or so steps that you need to climb to reach the Kalika Mata temple on the peak of Pavagadh Hill. The hill keeps getting narrower as you reach closer to the temple. The climb is scary as one small slip can lead to a stampede on a studded uneven staircase. But it looks worth the risk when you look back and see the landscape that keeps changing with every turn of the staircase. Old sculpted stones adorn the sides of the staircase.

Some of them had vermillion marks – reminiscent of the times when they would have been worshiped.

Kalika Mata Temple atop the hill

The temple at the top dates back at least 1000 years and maybe more. It is supposed to be one of the 51 Shaktipeeth temples across the country. It is said that the toe of the Goddess Sati had fallen here. A small temple with idols of three goddesses attracts a lot of cult devotees as we saw some women with swords in their hands moving through the crowds in a possessed state – obviously, everyone left the way for them.

I was amused to see some women pretending to be possessed so that they do not have to stand in the long queue. I held one such woman’s hand and with my expression asked her ‘What’s the matter’, to which she replied with a sheepish smile and joined the queue.

Temple in itself is ordinary-looking but the devotion on the faces all around makes it special. Sacrificial altars still exist in the temple, though I am not sure if sacrifices are still made here. I did not see any in the process.

Jain Temples

At the base of this temple are a few Jain temples , which look at least 400-500 years old. We spoke to a priest at one of the temples. But his story was hardly convincing and we decided to make our own observations. Jains claim that this hill was once full of Jain temples before the Islamic rulers came and made Champaner their capital and it became dominated by mosques. Other records say that the tribes like Bhil and Rathwas used to live and they were Shakti worshipers and the temple belonged to them.

We may never know the whole truth. But what matters is that it is an ancient place of worship and a living temple that appeals to millions of devotees.

The two ponds here on each side look beautiful from the top. But can do a lot of cleaning is what you realize when you reach closer. Shops selling all kinds of devotional stuff that are offered to the Goddess and mementos to take backline the sides of the path. There were photo studios with large backdrops of the hill against which you can get yourself clicked.

To see the hill properly you must climb it on foot right from the base to the top. But it would need a lot of endurance. We took the bus to the base and then the ropeway to the base of the temple. It still took us almost half a day to complete the visit.

What makes this site special ?

I am yet to write on Champaner which is a village at the foot of Pavagadh hill. Pavagadh hill is known for ancient temples on it – most of which are hardly preserved but thankfully are living temples.

Muslims destroyed the ancient temples when they came here.

The main idea behind reading blogs is to have a list of places where i can visit. Well I have added Pavagadh to my list .
