Where to hunt duck.

Ducks are found nearly anywhere. But some areas, typically located along the migration routes or wintering stations and offering a particularly good combination of water, food and shelter, attract amazing masses of waterfowl, and draw hunters sometimes from thousands of miles away. The prairies of American Midwest and the Saskatchewan and Alberta provinces of Canada, coastal areas of Texas and Louisiana, coastal marshes of Europe and the duck-filled skies of Argentina are only some of the legendary locations for duck hunting. Azerbaijan, with the Caspian Sea coast that attracts wintering birds from a large part of Russia and Kazakhstan, should also be mentioned.

Price distribution

Many duck hunting offers start at $200-$250 a day. Considering that for that price you get the use of the guide’s blind, decoys, usually retriever and often boat, not to mention expertise, it is a great bargain well worth the investment. The price may go up to $2,000-$3,000 depending on the usual factors such as trip duration, abundance of game, and whether food and lodging is included. You may see duck hunting trips priced at $10,000 and more, but these prices are usually for a team of up to 12 hunters. In general, duck hunting is perhaps the most affordable way of hunting the world.

Waterfowling traditions around the globe are rich and varied. While in most countries spring seasons and use of live decoys are forbidden, the special spring season that exists in Russia and a few other Eastern European countries is a notable exception. When to hunt Duck?

Waterfowl seasons generally occur in the autumn and winter, when the birds have finished raising their young and are migrating to warmer areas where food conditions are more reliable. The best time for hunting ducks is in the peak of the migration, or just after the flocks arrived at their destinations. When in unfamiliar territory, ducks rely on other ducks to locate the prime feeding grounds or shelter and are easier to attract by decoys and calling. Local ducks can be hunted during special summer seasons , with its peculiar set of challenges and thrills.

In most cases duck hunting is carried out from the blind, positioned over a body of water where the birds are likely to seek food and shelter, or so as to intercept the birds during their daily or seasonal movement. The latter case is known as pass shooting, and is commonly done using improvised cover provided by local vegetation. Some hunters also jump-shoot ducks by wading or hiking along a creek bottom, or try to approach them in a canoe, a punt, or a specially designed duck boat. Big-time duck hunting at migration routes or wintering grounds typically requires a considerable investment in gear (decoys, clothes, waders, etc.), and calls for much knowledge, experience, and skills in calling and setting up a realistic decoy spread. A hunter who wants to find out is duck hunting is for him or her is strongly recommended to start with an experienced and reputable guide.

West TN duck hunting has a long history of outfitting. I can remember stories of horse and buggies coming from all over to West TN just south of my home town of Dresden. This was before the channelization projects on the Obion river. We had thousands of acres of green timber and when it would come a rain they really pounded the ducks. The clients were called sports and the guides were called pushers. The guides basically pushed the boats around all day. Thank goodness for Mudbuddy motors now!

A little bit about our area. West TN duck hunting is surrounded by state and federal refuges. Here are some examples of numbers of just ducks in West TN that was counted by TWRA. These numbers are only on selected refuges. December 15th 335,000 total ducks in West TN. January 1st 443,000 total ducks. January 17th over 608,000 total ducks in West TN. Below I have listed the majority of the refuge’s that are located in West TN. Over the past few years the local state and federal governments have made significant improvement in ensuring that crucial food is planted for our waterfowl. Planting food for ducks in bottomland where ducks are is tricky business.

Welcome to FourFlyways in SW Idaho & E Oregon. We provide guided & non-guided Duck, Goose, Turkey, & Upland hunts within 1 hour of Boise. We offer season memberships through our Legacy program where you get access to multiple properties in the valley. Memberships also available on our Eldorado properties in Eastern Oregon. With our Guided hunts, we provide you with a professional guide, location, blind, & set all the decoys. Truely a plug & play package! All you need to bring is your license, gun, ammo, & camo clothing. All experience levels are welcome. For those that don't need/want a guide, we offer non guided hunts & memberships through our Legacy program as well.

Guided Hunts

Waterfowl hunts are morning hunts that end at noon. You will meet your guide at the hunt location 30 minutes before shooting time. From there, we load your gear into our crew cab Can Am & drive to the blind. Go ahead and pack your blind bag with some snacks and water, it's going to be a fun morning! 

Eastern Oregon Afternoon Pheasant & Quail hunts can be added to your hunt if your group wants a full day of hunting.

If you are a single hunter, or don't meet our minimum of 4, you will be combined with other clients. 

LATE SEASON SPRING HUNTS

Now Booking for 2025

  We guide for trophy Specklebellies starting in early February, through 2/16 in Idaho. Our clients travel from multiple states for the opportunity to harvest a beautiful trophy Speck for the wall. We also guide for Specks   across the border in Oregon through March 10th. 

5 man minimum if you want it to be just your group and not mixed. This season is very short, so book your hunt while days are still available.

Our late season Snow Goose hunts are from 2/25-3/10 in Idaho. Pull your plug, throw on the mag extension and get ready to shoot some white birds! We are hunting lesser Snows, but Blue geese & Ross geese are also taken while decoying. Shoot from the comfort of a pit or A frame blind. E-caller is legal at this time. Specks are closed.

7 man minimum if you want it to be just your group. Morning hunts are $320/person. 

All day hunts are $420/person

Legacy Membership

 Legacy members enjoy private access to hunt Ducks & Geese on our developed ground throughout the valley. Season is from mid October-January. Blinds are provided. 

We have memberships available for 2024/25. 

 Members get Exclusive access to our portfolio of properties in Idaho. No getting up early to race to your spot. Your access & hunt location for the morning is guaranteed as a Legacy member. A guide can be added to your membership for a small fee if desired.

I have fished on the Sundance with Captain RJ Waldron since 2018. I typically do about 10-15 trips a year on the Sundance. RJ always puts us on the fish whether they be salmon, halibut, stripers, rockfish or seabass. His deckhand AJ Gammon is the best salmon netter in the Bay Area Sportfishing Fleet. The Sundance in my opinion is the largest and most comfortable 6-pack boat in the entire Bay Area. If you have not chartered the Sundance our to Emeryville, you need to give the Sundance a try.

From back creek wood duck hunts in October, to large migrating flocks of mallards and black ducks during peak migration, we have the ability to find the ducks!  Regular/late season hunts will mainly be focused on puddle ducks (mallards, blacks, gadwalls) but we do encounter many other species of puddle ducks including pintails, wigeon, teal, and wood ducks.

We also encounter many species of diving ducks on big water hunts, including buffleheads, ring neck ducks, blue bills, goldeneye, redheads, long-tailed ducks, and canvasbacks.  We may hunt anywhere from secluded backwater ponds, to the big waters of the Susquehanna river. Hunts may take place out of permanent or temporary blinds, boat blinds, layout blinds, or stools in natural vegetation.

North Zone: Ducks, sea ducks, coots and mergansers, Oct. 7-21, and Nov. 14-Jan. 6.

South Zone: Ducks, sea ducks, coots and mergansers, Oct. 7-14, and Nov. 21-Jan. 20.

Northwest Zone: Ducks, sea ducks, coots and mergansers, Oct. 7-Dec. 2, and Dec. 26-Jan. 6.

Lake Erie Zone: Ducks, sea ducks, coots and mergansers, Nov. 6-Jan. 13.

Total Duck Bag Limits: 6 daily, 18 in possession of any species, except for the following restrictions: daily limit may not include more than 4 mallards including no more than 2 hen mallards, 2 black ducks, 3 wood ducks, 2 redheads, 2 canvasbacks, 1 pintail, 4 sea ducks; including no more than 3 eiders and no more than 1 female eider, 3 long-tailed ducks, and 3 scoters. Daily limit for scaup varies; see below. Possession limits are three times the daily limits.

Guided North Carolina Duck & Goose Hunts:

MOST POPULAR!  Hyde County Impoundment Duck Hunt: These guided hunts take place in flooded grain fields or managed moist soil impoundments surrounding Lake Mattamuskeet. Hundreds of thousands of waterfowl use the Mattamuskeet NWR and the nearby Pamlico Sound as a wintering and resting area and fly out to nearby fields and/or impoundments to feed during the day. Common species include: Pintail, Wigeon, Bluewing and Greenwing Teal, Ringneck, Black Ducks, Mallards, Wood Ducks, Shovelers, and Gadwall. We strive to offer the best guided duck hunting available. Each year, the NC Wildlife Resources Commission holds a lottery for 5000 swan permits. If you’re selected for a permit, you’re allowed to take one swan during the waterfowl season. What To Bring With You!

Waders: Most blinds are accessible without them. However, not having them could cost you an opportunity. Outerwear: Prior to leaving home, we recommend checking either with us or a trusted weather source in order to prepare specifically for your dates here with us. Rain gear is always recommended. Camo Patterns: If a choice can be made, try to keep things on the hardwoods or marsh end of the spectrum. Sometimes brightly colored patterns look out of place in this region. Gun/Shells: Either a 20 or 12 gauge is sufficient for most of our spots. Also it is recommended to have either a modified or improved cylinder choke. We suggest a quality steel or other non-toxic shell with 1 1/8 oz. to 1 3/8 oz. of shot depending on chamber length and gauge of gun. License/stamps: Each client MUST have a Texas hunting license and Migratory Endorsement along with a Federal Duck Stamp.

On our cypress swamp hunts we encounter Blue Wing Teal, Green Wing Teal, Wood Ducks, Mergansers, Greenheads (late in season) and some Gadwalls (gray ducks)

When it comes to hunting ducks, Pensacola is a special place!  Perched on the western edge of the Atlantic Flyway, the Pensacola area offers a unique opportunity for duck hunters to encounter species common in the Atlantic as well as the Mississippi and Central Flyways to the west. Bluebills (Greater Scaups) and Wood Ducks, common residents of the Eastern Flyway as well as Redheads and Gadwalls (Gray Ducks), more common in the Mississippi and Central Flyways, can all be encountered on a duck hunting trip in the Pensacola area.

The Pensacola area also offers the opportunity to hunt ducks commonly found in freshwater ponds such as Mallards, Teal and Wood Ducks as well as ‘sea ducks’ that are often found wintering in coastal bays and estuaries and in the Intracoastal Waterway such as Buffleheads and Bluebills.
