Ultimate Salzburg to Hallstatt Day Trip Itinerary

One day in Hallstatt Austria Itinerary - Hallstatt church at sunrise

When it comes to fairytale towns, there’s no competing with Hallstatt. Nestled in the snow-capped mountains of central Austria, this lakefront village looks like something Walt Disney dreamed up. If you’re looking for a magical experience, my Salzburg to Hallstatt day trip itinerary has got you covered.

Salzburg to Hallstatt day trip guide

The best time for a hallstatt day trip, getting to hallstatt from salzburg, salzburg to hallstatt day trip itinerary, is one day in hallstatt enough, overnight in hallstatt: where to stay.

  • Map of Salzburg to Hallstatt day trip itinerary

View of spring in Hallstatt with bench and mountains.

From summer blooms to Christmas markets, there isn’t one best time to visit Hallstatt. Here’s a brief overview of what to expect for each season:

  • We did our Hallstatt itinerary in late April over Easter weekend. While the crowds were fairly heavy, the weather was pleasant (unseasonably warm, actually), and there was a small Easter parade through the village.
  • Summer has comfortable, warm weather, but the crowds are intense. August should be avoided, as it’s peak tourist season across Europe.
  • Autumn brings beautiful golden foliage to the mountains, and crowds are typically lighter.
  • Winter turns Hallstatt into a storybook wonderland, with a traditional Christmas market and lovely white snow decorating the village. It’s truly one of the best winter destinations in Europe ! Some parts of the village are closed, however, like the funicular and salt mine.

By train: Salzburg Hbf > Attnang-Puchheim > Hallstatt Bahnhst

If you don’t have a car, taking the train is the easiest option. While there is no direct train from Salzburg to Hallstatt, the single connection is very straightforward.

  • Visit the ÖBB website to search for and purchase tickets. Be sure to print your tickets before departing!
  • You can also download the ÖBB app to buy tickets and display them on your phone (no printing needed).
  • If possible, book your tickets several days in advance. Ticket prices go up the closer you get to departure. Prices range from €9 to €25 depending on your departure time and how far in advance you purchase.
  • The earliest train departs Salzburg Hbf around 5am, getting you to Hallstatt station around 7:30am.
  • I strongly encourage you to leave Salzburg no later than 8:30am.  Hallstatt is a tiny village that fills up with tourists by the hour. The earlier you arrive, the more time you’ll have to explore without the crowds.

Seat Reservations: If you’re traveling to Hallstatt on a holiday weekend, I suggest paying for a seat reservation. The reservation will only be for the first leg of the trip (Salzburg to Attnang-Puchheim), but it will save you from having to stand or spend a long time looking for an open seat.

All of the train-only journeys will have a connection at Attnang-Puchheim. You won’t have much time to make the connection (about 5-10 minutes), but you shouldn’t have any trouble if you’re paying attention and exit the train promptly.

The conductor will often tell you what platform to go to when he/she checks your ticket on board. And there are electronic signs above and below the platforms that display the train destinations.

By bus: Salzburg Bus 150 > Bad Ischal Bus 542 > Gosaumühle Bus 543 > Hallstatt Lahn

You could take three buses to Hallstatt and get there 15 minutes faster than by train. But the extra transfer and seasonal/weekend timetable shifts make it more complicated.

If you do choose this option, use the route planner to find the best connection times. Note that the bus drops you off on the village’s south side. So, you’ll want to do this Salzburg to Hallstatt day trip itinerary in reverse, starting with Badeinsel Island.

If you already have a rental car, driving to Hallstatt from Salzburg is a great idea. The drive takes around 80 minutes, and you can enjoy scenic mountain views along the way.

There are two visitor car parks : P1 and P2. As you approach the village, electronic displays will show the number of spaces left in each lot. For a Hallstatt day trip, you’ll want to park in P2 if it’s not full.

When you’re ready to leave, simply take your parking ticket to the machine and pay with cash or credit card.

Organized Hallstatt tours from Salzburg

Taking public transit in a foreign country can be overwhelming. Fortunately, there are multiple tour operators that can get you to and from the village, and even show you what to see in Hallstatt.

Taking the Hallstatt Ferry

Hallstatt ferry dock with view of lake and village.

Riding the ferry was one of my favorite things to do in Hallstatt. If you arrive by train, this is how you’ll reach the village.

The ferry schedule coincides with the village’s train timetable, making it easy to come and go across the lake. Once you get off the train, walk down the ramp to the dock, where you can buy round trip tickets from the attendant.

Be sure to bring cash, as they do not take credit cards for the ferry. Although you don’t get a discount for round trip tickets, it will save you from having to stand in line on your way back.

If you want to take photos from the ferry, you need to be prepared. Getting a good spot on the deck was like a scene from the Hunger Games. Get ready to hop off the train, speed down the ramp, and walk straight to the left (port) railing for the best views.

Also, if you’re traveling during peak season, you should get in line at least 20 minutes before your return ferry departs. It would be a shame to miss your train, especially if it’s the last one of the day!

Walk around the northern village

Sunrise view of Hallstatt church.

From my experience, people tend not to explore Hallstatt beyond the iconic northern viewpoint. But there are some beautiful houses and lake views to be had along the Gosaumühlstraße.

Follow the street north out of the village. Here, you’ll see lovely wooden homes decorated with wind chimes, flower pots, and other seasonal trinkets.

Walk until you reach the underpass, and then turn back. As you come around the bend near the village center, you’ll get a gorgeous view of the church.

Take photos at the “postcard” view point

Postcard view of Hallstatt village panorama.

If a photograph inspired you to visit Hallstatt, it was probably taken at this “Classic Village Viewpoint”. Located a few minutes’ walk from the ferry dock, this panoramic view of Hallstatt is simply breathtaking.

The overlook area is fairly spacious, so you won’t have to wait long (or at all) to get a turn at the railing. Even if you don’t have a wide angle lens, you can still capture a beautiful scene with the houses, mountains, church, and lake.

If you’re using a smartphone with a panorama setting, now is the time to use it! One of my favorite shots from our Hallstatt itinerary was a panorama that included the entire lake and a lone swan.

Save me for later!

Explore the charming village center

Hallstatt village center with flowers and colorful buildings, one of the most popular Hallstatt tourist attractions.

Hallstatt’s central area is so beautiful, they constructed a replica of it in China. If that’s not an endorsement of the village’s charm, I don’t know what is!

With colorful buildings, flowering vines, a waterfall, and a mountain backdrop, it’s almost a surreal experience to walk through Hallstatt. Hopefully you took my advice and arrived early, because the crowds here can reach Disney World proportions.

RELATED: A Fairytale Day Trip to Castle Drachenburg and Konigswinter

Because the village is so compact, there’s no exact route you need to take. Just enjoy a leisurely stroll through the streets, and check out a few highlights along the way.

At the northern end lies the Catholic Church and ossuary , a.k.a. the bone church. You can pay a couple euros to go inside, where hundreds of painted skulls are arranged in rows. The rear cemetery is free to enter and has lovely views over the lake and village.

Continuing south, you’ll find the famous Evangelist Church , whose steeple rises above the village. It’s worth poking your head in to see the 200-year-old interior.

Hallstatt Marktplatz with colorful houses and fountain.

Diagonal from the church sits the Marktplatz , lined with brightly painted restaurants and shops. There are a few benches here for resting, and a stone water fountain with fresh drinking water.

For a unique view over the village, head up the steps behind the Evangelisches Pfarramt on Oberer Marktplatz road. There are a couple landings where you can take photos over the rooftops.

Blue hour view over Hallstatt village and lake.

As you walk down the Seestraße , you’ll see plenty of cute shops and cafes selling local treats and crafts. Be sure to turn down Am Hof  for excellent views towards the southern part of the village.

Colorful houses lining the street with mountain view at the end.

Grab lunch at Karmez

It might seem strange to recommend a kebap cart for lunch in Austria, but I promise you won’t be disappointed. Given that this is a Salzburg to Hallstatt day trip, I’m assuming you’ve had plenty of chances to eat the local cuisine.

In addition to delicious kepabs, Karmez serves up hot dogs, sausages, fries, and wraps at very reasonable prices. We ate here twice in one day. It’s that good.

Get a swan’s-eye view from the lake

Hallstatt swan boat docked along lake.

If you’ve seen the swans drifting around Lake Hallstatt and felt a pang of jealousy, I have good news. You can get your very own swan’s-eye view of Hallstatt with the help of  Lake Hallstatt Explorer !

They rent boats by the half hour and hour from the dock near the Markt Zentrum boat landing. Aside from the swan paddle boats, they also rent out electric boats, row boats, and paddle boards.

Ride the funicular to the World Heritage overlook platform

View of Lake Hallstatt and Obertraun from Hallstatt Skywalk.

The World Heritage overlook point is one of the most popular Hallstatt tourist attractions. But don’t let that dissuade you if you’re more of an “off the beaten path” type of person. The view is remarkable, and there’s a bit of optional hiking that will take you away from the crowds.

After your boating excursion, follow the main road south to the funicular platform. You’ll see signs directing you towards the Salt Mine/Skywalk as you approach the ticket office.

It’s not exactly cheap to take the funicular (€17 round trip in 2019). But for a Hallstatt day trip, you probably won’t have the time or energy to hike for two hours up the mountainside.

Once you reach the top, exit the platform and head right towards the Skywalk. This metal platform juts out over the mountainside and is a popular Hallstatt Instagram spot. From here, you can see across the lake to Obertraun, and you’ll have a bird’s-eye view over Hallstatt’s village center.

If you have time, I suggest walking up the trail towards the Salt Mine entrance. It’s a nice, peaceful respite from the crowds. There’s also a small cafe at the top of the mountain that sells snacks and bottled water if you need refreshment.

Wander through the southern village

Hallstatt houses and cottages along creek.

After you ride the funicular back to the village, spend some time exploring southern Hallstatt. Tourists don’t typically roam around here, but there are lots of lovely houses and mountain views to enjoy.

The police station is particularly charming, and it’s not often you get to utter that sentence!

Relax on the scenic Badeinsel Hallstatt island

Sunset view of northern Hallstatt village, a perfect way to end your Hallstatt itinerary.

As your Hallstatt day trip winds down, head to Badeinsel park’s island for one last beautiful view.

We arrived here as the sun was setting behind the mountain. Families were enjoying a picnic in the grass, dogs were romping about… It was the perfect way to end our visit.

Colorful lanterns hanging from tree at Hallstatt restaurant.

Ah, the age old question! You can see and do a lot with one day in Hallstatt. But for the best possible experience, I suggest staying overnight.

First, you won’t feel the need to rush around, especially if you’re relying on the ferry. It’s hard to fully enjoy a Salzburg to Hallstatt day trip when you’re constantly checking your watch and stressing about time.

Second, you can wake up early, roam the empty streets, and watch a magnificent sunrise. The greatest travel experience of my life was watching the sun come up over the mountains and slowly illuminate the village.

Finally, if you want to explore the Salt Mines , you’ll want more than one day in Hallstatt. The tour itself is over an hour, and it’s a bit of a hike from the funicular to the mine entrance. Unless you arrive very early, it will be tough to fit this into your Hallstatt itinerary.

Interior of Heritage Hotel Hallstatt bedroom with window view.

I am so happy that we spent the night in Hallstatt! It was a relief not having to worry about catching the ferry. And we had the whole village to ourselves the next morning, which was truly unforgettable.

After a lot of research, we chose the Heritage Hotel Hallstatt for accommodation. Our spacious room had lovely views of the lake and church. And it’s right across from the ferry, so no lugging bags through the narrow, crowded streets.

Accommodation in Hallstatt is limited, so I suggest booking as far in advance as possible.

You said it all in the first sentence…’fairytale town’! It looks more magical in every photo, and is now on my bucket list 😀

Thanks Rasha! Hallstatt is one of those places where you just keep pinching yourself to ensure it’s real and not just a dream 🙂

What a fabulous & insightful site. Thank you. I’m contemplating Salzburg for a few days, mainly to visit Hallstatt, before heading into Italy, and being a solo female traveller was wondering if I needed to do a preset 7-8 day guided tour of the Austrian Lakes just to see this fairytale town, and No I don’t! Definitely an overnight stay seems the way to go as well. Tx again

Glad I could help with the trip planning, Evana! Spending the night in Hallstatt is definitely the way to go. It’s amazing how different the village feels in the early morning hours before day trippers arrive.

  • One Day in Hallstatt Itinerary: The Perfect Hallstatt Day Trip

Panoramic view of Hallstatt from the Classic Postcard Viewpoint, a must visit place on every Hallstatt itinerary

Despite its modest size, the charming Austrian village of Hallstatt isn’t short of wonderful attractions. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hallstatt is full of traditional architecture and museums, as well as a fascinating peek into salt mine history.

As it’s situated on the banks of Lake Hallstatt in the mountainous region of Salzkammergut, this dream destination offers huge appeal to nature lovers and outdoorsy types as well.

It’s perfectly possible to see the best of Hallstatt in one day as part of a wider Austria itinerary . The alpine village is a popular day trip from Salzburg and slots nicely into any Austria road trip itinerary as well. Morning of Your Hallstatt Itinerary

I recommend spending the morning of your Hallstatt day trip by wandering around the town center, checking out the notable attractions and beautiful viewpoints, and of course, taking tons of photos.

You can see the highlights of Hallstatt Zentrum comfortably over the course of one morning because the town is tiny and walkable. Below is a quick overview of the places you can visit during your self-guided walk.

Marktplatz Hallstatt

Dominated by a fountain and statue of the Holy Trinity, Marktplatz Hallstatt is the very center of the town and is adorned with picturesque alpine buildings that will make any photographer croon.

Spend some time roaming the quaint area, dipping into the cafes to pick up Austrian pastries, and mooching through souvenir shops.

Depending on what time you visit, the buildings may be awash with summer blooms or coated with a layer of thick snow. During the warmer months, there are often concerts and religious events held in the marketplace while come winter, it hosts the annual Christmas Market.

Colorful houses at Marktplatz Hallstatt

Evangelisches Pfarramt

There are a couple of churches in town that you will spot while exploring on foot during your day trip to Hallstatt. A relic of the late 18th century, Evangelisches Pfarramt is an iconic element of the Hallstatt skyline and affords a lovely view of the lake from the tower.

Colorful houses and the Evangelisches Pfarramt in Hallstatt

Michaelskapelle, Beinhaus & Ossuary

The chapel and cemetery of Michaelskapelle sit just to the north of the village. Inside the church, you can see the Hallstatt ossuary, a collection of hundreds upon thousands of human skulls and bones.

In a touching sentiment, the skulls are inscribed with the name of the deceased, their year of passing, and intricate floral paintings.

If you want to visit the ossuary then the admission cost is €1.50. It’s open to tourists from Wednesday to Sunday, 10 am – 5 pm.

Classic Postcard Viewpoint

You’ll agree that everywhere you look in Hallstatt is worth stopping to snap a photo, but it’s still worth visiting one or two of the official viewpoints.

Walk less than two minutes north of the churchyard and you will find the point marked as ‘Aussichtspunkt Hallstatt’ on Google Maps, or ‘classic viewpoint.’ From here you will get a striking shot of the village within its mountain setting, the perfect memento from your day trip to Hallstatt.

Hallstatt Waterfall

It might surprise you to hear that there is a waterfall in the heart of Hallstatt! It might not quite rival the massive, tropical waterfalls of Bali and the Philippines, but it gets pretty close and offers up some fantastic photography opportunities.

The trail starts not far from Marktplatz and it takes a pleasant 20 minutes to reach the attraction.

Hallstatt Waterfall

Small Island

Head south of the village to Small Island, which floats a few meters off the lakeside. The teeny island is connected to the mainland by an equally teeny bridge and once you cross over you’ll have a clear view of the village.

It takes 15 minutes to walk to Small Island from Marktplatz, so you might want to make this either your first stop or last stop of the morning on your Hallstatt itinerary.

View from Small Island in Hallstatt

Afternoon of Your Hallstatt Itinerary

Salzbergwerk hallstatt.

For the afternoon of your one day in Hallstatt, you can head to one of the town’s most interesting attractions, the salt mine. With a 7,000-year history, the mine is one of the oldest of its kind in the world.

The mine is located higher up in the mountains and you basically have two options to get there.

You can ride the Salzbergbahn funicular from the town center (near the P2 parking lot) which takes a few minutes and delivers you a 10-15 minute walk from the mine entrance. The cost is €22 for a return or €12 one way.

You can also purchase a combo ticket for the funicular and the salt mine, it costs €40 per person.

Alternatively, you can opt to hike up for free. This takes around 1-1.5 hours which will definitely lengthen your Hallstatt itinerary. The route itself is well-marked and easy to follow, however, it’s pretty steep, so be prepared with proper shoes and lots of water.

If you don’t use the funicular at all, then the entrance to the salt mines only costs €27 per person. In this case, you’ll need to calculate some extra time for hiking down as well (it takes around 45-60 minutes).

The mine is only accessible via a guided tour and comprises around 2 km (1.2 miles) of walking and the rest is via mine train. The tour itself takes around 70-80 minutes and they depart every 30 minutes between 9 am – 4 pm. You need to be there 30 minutes prior to the start time.

It’s important to wear sturdy shoes and warm clothing as the temperature below ground averages 8°C (46°F). You’ll get a protective jacket and trousers prior to the tour that you’ll need to put on top of your regular clothes.

Therefore even if you’re visiting in the heat of the summer, it’s best to wear jeans and t-shirts rather than dresses or skirts (or at least have a change of clothes in your backpack for the tour).

Salt mines at Salzbergwerk Hallstatt

Hallstatt Skywalk

Warm up after your mine tour at one of the most scenic stops of your one day Hallstatt itinerary. The Hallstatt Skywalk is an observation deck that juts out 350 meters (1,148 feet) above the town and grants an uninterrupted view of the lofty ranges.

There is no entrance fee to visit the viewpoint so if you’re not fussed about the mine tour I’d still recommend popping up to take the sights in.

Girl in a yellow skirt at Hallstatt Skywalk

Restaurant Rudolfsturm

Either for lunch or as an afternoon treat, you can pay a visit to this scenic cafe which has a terrace that overlooks the lake and mountains. It’s located right next to the Hallstatt Skywalk so you can easily visit after taking in the scenic views.

If you have a sweet tooth, try their apple strudel – it’s seriously one of the best I’ve ever eaten!

Evening of Your Hallstatt Itinerary

Hike to waldbachstrub waterfall or glacier garden.

Conclude the perfect one day Hallstatt itinerary with a leisurely hike that gives you a final opportunity to experience the majestic nature. There are two suggestions that are located close to one another in the Echern Valley of Hallstatt: Waldbachstrub Waterfall or Glacier Garden.

If you don’t want to move your car or you arrived with a different kind of transport, you can start both hikes from Hallstatt Parking P2. From there, you have multiple options to start your hike: you can either take Echerntalweg, Kohlstattweg then Malerweg, or cross the river and walk along Malerweg until you reach Parkplatz Echerntal.

Alternatively, if you’re running short on time or you don’t want to hike that much, you can drive your car to Parkplatz Echerntal as well.

Right after passing by the parking lot, you’ll be presented with a fork. You can take the paved road on the left which will lead you to the Glacier Garden (Gletschergarten).

This is a cluster of unique rocks, landforms, fairy pools, and streams that formed during the last Ice Age as the glacier in the gorge receded. This natural wonder is accessible by following the signs for Simonyhütte and the Wiesberghaus.

If you take the gravel road on the right, you’ll be heading in the direction of Waldbachstrub Waterfall. Just a heads up: although the trail is signposted, none of the signs actually say the name of the waterfall so it’s quite easy to get lost. You will come across some forks during the trail, when in doubt, always take the right one!

Waldbachstrub waterfall Hallstatt

To be completely transparent, we didn’t manage to find the waterfall during our hike. At the third or fourth fork, we accidentally took the wrong turn and ended up going up to the Glacier Garden.

If we would have taken the right turn and crossed the little stream, we would have found the waterfall within 15 minutes. But unfortunately, we took the left and after climbing up lots of stairs, we found ourselves at the Glacier Garden. Not complaining though as it was really beautiful, but it would have been easier to just take the paved road from the parking lot if I would have wanted to come here.

Anyways, reaching the Glacier Garden from the Echerntal parking lot takes around 30 minutes while hiking to Waldbachstrub Waterfall takes around 40-45 minutes.

Unless you skip some of the earlier activities on the itinerary, you will need to choose one hiking option. However, if you have longer than one day in Hallstatt then I highly recommend you tackle both of these hikes.

Glacier Garden in Hallstatt, Austria

Restaurant am See

After an exhausting but (hopefully) wonderful day exploring Hallstatt, it’s finally time to sit down and satiate your hunger! You might have already scouted out a place to eat during your stroll around Hallstatt Zentrum but if not then I suggest heading to Restaurant am See.

Tables spread out over the lakeside terrace providing enchanting panoramic views as you eat. The menu comprises typical Austrian fare, freshly caught fish, and a hearty mix of beers, wines, and spirits.

Useful Info for Visiting Hallstatt

How to get to hallstatt.

Salzburg is the most convenient springboard for your Hallstatt day trip and features the closest international airport. If you rent a car then the scenic drive from Salzburg to Hallstatt will take 1-1.5 hours to complete.

Arrive as early as possible to secure parking in town at one of the two central parking lots, especially during summer, public holidays, and weekends. Hallstatt is very popular among tourists and it’s not rare that the parking lots fill up before 10 am.

Taking the public bus or train from Salzburg takes longer so you will definitely need to book a hotel in town to make this Hallstatt itinerary worthwhile. Buses and trains both take around 3 hours each way and require a couple of changes.

Bus number 150 departs from Salzburg Hofwirt (C) and takes you as far as Bad Ischl Bahnhof. From here you will need to switch to the 542 bus and then again to the 543 at Gosaumühle.

Trains depart from Salzburg Hbf with a change at Attnang-Puchheim before reaching the terminal in Obertraun on the eastern side of the lake. At this point, you will need to hop on a ferry across the lake to reach Hallstatt.

Best time to visit Hallstatt

Defined by four distinct seasons, the village is a year-round destination and the best time to plan your day trip to Hallstatt depends on your personal preferences.

Peak season is during the summer months of July/August, this is when the town sees the most crowds and the hottest temperatures.

In total contrast, the town is likely to experience snow during the winter months of November through February when the temperature can drop to 0°C (32°F). This makes it a popular destination for winter sports enthusiasts and the city bursts into a ski resort.

Overall, the late spring and autumn months are the most pleasant time to visit when the scenery is alive with summer flowers or leafy autumn foliage. Temperatures lingering around 15-19°C (59-62°F) make these times of year the perfect time to include some light hiking in your Hallstatt itinerary.

How to get around Hallstatt

Once you reach Hallstatt you can easily explore the village on foot as it’s so tiny. Most of the attractions on my itinerary are within walking distance so I recommend parking your car for the duration of your one day in Hallstatt. In fact, you’ll have to – the town center is a car-free zone!

All the places on this Hallstatt itinerary are accessible by foot, however, some of them are located higher up in the mountain. While it’s totally possible to hike up there, you might want to take advantage of the funicular that transports you to the top within minutes.

Where to stay in Hallstatt

Hallstatt is a small place and hotel options are quite limited (and expensive). The following three places are my recommendations for where to stay in the center of town.

Make sure to book in advance to secure your accommodation, especially if you plan your Hallstatt itinerary during summer!

Hallstatt Hideaway

LUXURY – Hallstatt Hideaway

This adults-only resort is located right on the waterfront and comprises a deluxe portfolio of suites that offer lake views. Modern interiors feature a rustic twist and the most decadent options come with additional features ranging from private patios to private spa pools.

Heritage Hotel Hallstatt

MID-RANGE – Heritage Hotel Hallstatt

All rooms and suites at this 4-star hotel provide lake views and are equipped with a private bathroom, coffee maker, and homely touches. The accommodation spans three buildings and there is also a restaurant and sauna on site.

Gasthof Bergfried

BUDGET – Gasthof Bergfried

This centrally located guest house features compact rooms with en suite bathrooms with the option to upgrade to a balcony suite. The property offers a shared relaxation area with a spa and sauna.

Alternatively, if you have a car, you might want to stay a little further out of town in one of the surrounding hamlets. One of the best options is Obertraun, from where you can reach Hallstatt within 10 minutes by car or you can also take advantage of the ferry.

We stayed at Haus Salzkammergut on our second visit to Hallstatt and absolutely loved everything about the hotel! Great location, amazing views from the balcony, lovely owners, cute doggie, and delicious breakfast. I can only recommend this place!

In case the hotel is full or you’re looking for something else, you can check all the accommodation options in Obertraun here .

Hallstatt’s unique charm lies in its stunning lakeside setting and rich cultural heritage.

From the iconic Hallstatt Lake to the ancient salt mines, there’s a sense of wonder in every corner.

Hallstatt is popular for a variety of reasons:

  • Scenic Beauty : Nestled between a serene lake and towering mountains.

Getting to Hallstatt from Salzburg

Hallstatt in Austria at Hallstätter See and Austrian Alps

Hallstatt is part of the Salzkammergut, a lake district, and about 45 miles southeast of Salzburg city.

While you can drive to Hallstatt by car, or take the train, we recommend booking a guided tour based on our experience.

Driving to Hallstatt takes approximately 1 and a half hours, and since the village is car-free, you’ll have to park outside.

Parking spaces are limited and often fully booked.

You can also opt for the train to Hallstatt, but it requires changing trains at Attnang-Puchheim or Bad Ischl.

You can check the train tables at the Austrian railway website Oebb .

To be honest, I find it a bit confusing (and I’m Austrian). I always check the options at Trainline . (You get the tickets for the same price.)

Upon arrival, you’ll find yourself on the opposite side of the lake.

A ferry ride is necessary to reach the village. While the ferry offers scenic views, it adds time to your journey.

Expect about 2 and a half to 3 hours one way to reach Hallstatt.

That’s why we suggest taking a guided day trip or a half-day tour. Simply board the bus and enjoy a hassle-free visit to Hallstatt.

Traveling by Rental Car

  • Provider : DiscoverCars
  • Advantages : Flexibility, scenic drives
  • Consideration : Limited parking availability
  • Don’t forget : getting a Vignette (Austrian highway toll) and read our guide about driving in Austria

Taking the Train and Ferry

  • Booking : Trainline for schedules and tickets
  • Route : Salzburg to Attnang-Puchheim, then to Hallstatt
  • Ferry Connection : From the train station, take a ferry across the lake to reach Hallstatt village (pay in cash only)
  • Advantages : Scenic views, local interactions

Both methods of travel have their unique advantages.

Guided Day Trip to Hallstatt

However, for those staying in Salzburg and wanting to visit Hallstatt without the hassle of coordinating different modes of transportation, I highly recommend booking a tour from Salzburg.

It offers a stress-free experience, allowing you to enjoy the journey and the destination without any transportation worries.

Things To Do In Hallstatt

stunning view over Hallstatt with traditional wooden house in Austria

While the center of Hallstatt in the Salzkammergut is small, there are still plenty of things to do.

From exploring the streets of its historic center to indulging in local culinary delights, there’s something for everyone in this picturesque lakeside village.

After exploring the lakeside village, you can visit the ancient salt mines , where you can delve into the town’s rich mining history.

You can also plan a trip to the majestic Dachstein Mountain , offering breathtaking views and a chance to experience the natural landscape that surrounds Hallstatt.

These excursions provide a perfect blend of history and nature, making your visit to Hallstatt even more memorable.

Exploring the Historic Center of Hallstatt

The heart of Hallstatt is its historic center surrounding the market square.

It’s a place where time seems to stand still amidst its centuries-old buildings and quaint alleyways.

It’s here that you will find the true essence of Austrian charm.

Hallstatt, with a history spanning over 7,000 years, is also a place of great historical significance.

Spectacular archaeological finds, particularly from the Hallstatt cemetery, are so significant that an entire cultural era, the Hallstatt Culture (850 – 500 B.C.), was named after this location.

The highlights are the following:

  • Traditional Austrian Houses : Wander through the lanes lined with picturesque houses, showcasing traditional Austrian architecture. Their charming, partly wooden facades and flower-filled balconies are stunning.
  • Incredible Views : Don’t miss the opportunity to capture the panoramic views of the lake and surrounding mountains like the Dachstein mountain.
  • Local Shops and Cafes : The historic center is filled with quaint shops, cozy cafes, and restaurants. It’s perfect for enjoying a leisurely break and soaking in the atmosphere.
  • Charnel House (Beinhaus) : Located in the small St. Michael’s Chapel, this unique site houses over 600 painted skulls. It’s a tradition stemming from the limited space in the local cemetery.
  • Hallstatt Cemetery : This beautifully maintained cemetery offers not only a serene atmosphere but also stunning views over the lake.
  • World Heritage Museum: The museum has an exhibition with artifacts from the Stone Age to the present

As you stroll through the historic center, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a living museum, rich in history and beauty.

It’s a must-visit part of your Hallstatt day trip.

Lunch in Hallstatt: Local Delicacies to Try

Indulge in local Austrian cuisine at one of Hallstatt’s cozy restaurants.

The fresh lake trout is a must-try, perfectly paired with a view of the lake. If you’re vegetarian or vegan, like I am, you can enjoy Kässpätzle.

There are a few restaurants in the center. Some, like the Seehotel Grüner Baum , offer lake views.

Other Tips For Your Day In Hallstatt

There are other amazing things to do when you’re done strolling through the old village itself.

The highlights to consider are the following:

Boat Trip on Hallstätter See

A boat ride on Hallstätter See offers a unique perspective of Hallstatt. You can see the village set against the Dachstein mountains.

Salzwelten and the Skywalk

Just outside Hallstatt, you can visit the Salzwelten, the world’s oldest salt mine.

Besides exploring the salt mines you can enjoy breathtaking views from the Skywalk.

This platform is perched high above the lake, offering a panoramic vista of Hallstatt and its surroundings.

Dachstein Mountain and the 5 Fingers Viewpoint

You can visit the Dachstein mountain for stunning alpine scenery.

The highlight is the 5 Fingers viewing platform. It extends out over a cliff, providing one of Austria’s most spectacular views.

This spot allows for an unforgettable panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

Accommodation Options: If You Choose to Stay

Hallstatt offers a range of accommodations for those wishing to extend their stay.

From luxury hotels to cozy guesthouses, there’s a perfect place for every budget.

If you have time, I highly recommend planning a night in Hallstatt.

In the morning, the place is tranquil and less crowded, and you can enjoy the village center a lot more.

If you want to stay in the heart of Hallstatt, these are the best options:

Heritage Hotel Hallstatt : modern rooms located in the historic center -> book your stay

Historic Lakeview Apartments Hallstatt : Best view and traditional rooms -> book your stay

Seehotel Grüner Baum : Directly at the lake and in the center -> book your stay

Hallstatt for Photographers: Capturing the Magic

For photography enthusiasts, Hallstatt is a dream destination. The early morning light and the reflective waters of the lake provide the perfect conditions for stunning photographs.

If you want stunning photos of Lake Hallstatt, the village, the Austrian Alps, and hidden gems, you can book a guided tour with a photographer.

Local Customs and Etiquette

Understanding and respecting local customs and etiquette in Hallstatt enriches the travel experience.

Engage with locals respectfully and embrace the cultural nuances.

Please, don’t open any garden gates and step into houses. I saw this while strolling around. People live there. It’s not an open-air museum.

Is Hallstatt worth it?

Yes, it’s a beautiful place. And it’s one of those places you need to see, like Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany.

But: After spending time in Hallstatt once, I wouldn’t go there again. Simply because it is crowded like crazy.

How To See Hallstatt In One Day From Salzburg: The Ultimate Guide

  • This post was last updated on August 11, 2023

Hallstatt, Austria is one of those idyllic, fairytale towns that are perfect for a day trip from Salzburg. Salzburg is the perfect base to do a day trip from, as it is only about 44 miles (71km) to Hallstatt!

Hallstatt, a UNESCO Heritage site, is located on the western shore of Hallstätter See in Austria’s Salzkammergut region.

Until the 19th century, they say that you couldn’t reach the town other than by boat or trails that run above the town in the mountains. Today, you can not drive IN the town, but you can drive through a tunnel behind the town and come out on the other side where you can find parking and walk into town.

The average high temperature in winter is 3°C (37.4 °F) and the average lowest temperature is -3 °C (26.6 °F).

The ferry was closed when we visited, so the train attendee told us to get off at Steeg-Gosau Bahnhof. From there, we got on the bus 542 that took us to Gosaumühle. Then we had to switch to bus 543 that took us to the Hallstatt Lahn (Seelände) bus stop. When we left town we jumped on 542 or 543 at the Hallstatt Nord bus stop. The total time on the buses were about 16 minutes each way. The total cost of the bus trip is €3.70 each way.

Two trains and two busses and we finally made it there a little before 9 a.m.!

Salzwelten is the oldest salt mine in the world (over 7,000 years) and an UNESCO World Heritage site.

Just like the Fortress Hohensalzburg , the tour includes a 360-meter ride up the mine on the panorama Salzbergbahn funicular railway up the mountain mine. Tour the mountain mine donning protective gear and ride two long slides inside.

The guided tour in the salt mine begins and you’ll be met with 2 long miners’ slides, a subterranean salt lake and, finally, a ride on the mine train. At 400 meters below ground, you will also be able to see the oldest wooden staircase in Europe!

Afternoon: Walk Around & Have Lunch

We walked to the Panoramablick Hallstättersee 4830 Hallstatt to get some gorgeous views of the town. Then we proceeded to walk north through the town.

Honestly, the best thing to do is to walk around and explore its small alleys and soak in the stunning views.

Visit Central Square Marktplatz

The historic Marktplatz, or market square, is the center of this town. You’ll find mostly restaurants, cafes, hotels, and souvenir shops here. It is almost car-free zone – there were a few that were coming in an out of the square.

Tips for Visiting

  • Public toilets: There are public toilets just behind the Pfarrkirche Mariä Himmelfahrt (be sure to have some coins with you!) They are also some on your right on a little side street off the main pedestrian road just after the market square (direction tourist information office). Keep your €0,50 coins for the public toilets in the historic centre.
  • Wi-Fi: There is a wi-fi hotspot on the market square.
  • Money: Make sure you have enough cash on you because many restaurants and shops don’t accept credit or debit cards.

Is it worth a day trip?

One of the best aspects is how small and quaint the town is. That means, with only one day in Hallstatt, you’ll be able to see it all! By the time we arrived, we only had half a day in the town but were still able to see everything we wanted to and more!

Luxury: Heritage Hotel Mid-Budget: Seehotel Grüner Baum Budget: Gasthof Simony B&B

We did not need more than 4 hours to see the whole town

Hallstatt Day Trip Itinerary + Guide for 2024

Wondering what to do on a Hallstatt day trip? This guide has you covered for things to do in Hallstatt in one day and tips for getting there and around.

If you find yourself in Austria, near Salzburg, one place you definitely shouldn’t miss is Hallstatt. With about 950 residents, this small town surrounded by the Alps is truly a fairy-tale spot where you are sure to enjoy yourself. Hallstatt is a small town located on the shore of the lake with the same name, surrounded by the Alps. The region it belongs to is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It is considered the oldest continuously inhabited place in Europe , mainly because it was home to the world’s first known salt mine. The town got its name from the ancient Celtic word for salt, “HAL”. Until the 19th century, Hallstatt could only be reached by boat or a narrow mountain path. To build a road, rocks had to be broken, and tunnels had to be made, as Hallstatt is situated in a bay and was difficult to access. Perhaps it’s this secluded nature that has helped preserve its fairy-tale beauty.

How To Get To Hallstatt

You can reach Hallstatt in three ways: by bus, car, or a combination of train and boat across the lake. The best option depends on where you’re coming from.

If you’re traveling from Salzburg, the quickest and most convenient way is by bus, as it takes around two hours, while the train journey takes almost two and a half hours. If you’re  traveling from Vienna to Hallstatt , it will take about four hours by train. Keep in mind that the train doesn’t go directly to Hallstatt; the station is in Obertraun, across the lake, so you’ll need to take a ferry to reach Hallstatt.

This might sound a bit complicated, but it’s a chance to see Hallstatt from the water, so you won’t need to pay for boat tours in Hallstatt for panoramic sightseeing. Of course, the fastest way to get to Hallstatt is by car. It takes about 1 hour from Salzburg and three hours from Vienna, although, to be honest, I’ve never managed to make it in less than four hours; it often even takes four and a half hours.

I can’t remember the last time I drove on an Austrian highway without encountering roadworks at least twice, where you can easily lose half an hour.

Things to do in Hallstatt in one day

I stayed in Bad Ischl and arrived in Hallstatt around 07:30 in the morning. The fog had covered everything, including the panoramic view of the town Hallstatt is famous for. This was expected, given its proximity to the Alps and the lake, but we eagerly waited for it to clear up. As we started exploring the town the first impression I had was how beautiful, idyllic, and peaceful everything is. It felt like stepping into a perfectly drawn postcard. The medieval buildings decorated with geraniums and fruit trees beside the houses add a special charm to the place. Every corner is perfectly maintained, and the view of the lake is breathtaking. There’s one main street that has everything you need to see.

main square with historic buildings in Hallstatt Austria

World Heritage Museum

The Hallstatt Museum, which holds the world’s second-largest collection of Hallstatt culture artworks. The entrance fee to the museum is 10 euros. For a price of €10, you will have access to key historical information and a collection of art from the Hallstatt culture.

If you are staying in Hallstatt, it is very likely that you will receive a free ticket at your accommodation which gives you a discount for the museum entrance.

When planning your trip, make sure to check if the museum is open, as it is not possible to enter the museum on Mondays and Tuesdays in certain months.

Protestant Church

The famous church from all the photographs, right by the shore, is the Protestant church built in 1505. It features a tower from the old church dating back to 1320.

Tourists and bloggers from all over the world flock to Hallstatt to take the now ‘famous’ photo with the motif of this church, which rises next to the lake itself.

If you also want to immortalize this magnificent scene that takes everyone’s breath away, you need to be in the right place at the right time.

Depending on the season and time of day, the sun at a certain time emerges from behind the Dachstein glacier, and my recommendation is to be in position for photography before sunrise or during sunset for optimal light for the photo.

The best place for a photo is from the middle of the lake if you are on a boat. If you happen to want to take photos from the land, walk past the World Heritage hotel, then through the archway. Go uphill and in 2 minutes you are at the right place.

There is even an agency where you can rent a traditional Austrian outfit for a complete experience and a picture like from a postcard. Another highlight of Hallstatt is the Catholic church. Brunnen Square is also there, giving you a wide-angle view of the pastel houses and terraces. If you’re in  Hallstatt during winter , this square hosts a charming Christmas market.

Cemetery and Beinhaus

It’s interesting to know that Hallstatt is often described as a place where even death has a certain beauty. This might sound odd, but there’s a uniquely beautiful cemetery right here.

It holds around 1,200 skulls. Since cremation wasn’t an option, the bones were exhumed after 10 years, bleached by sunlight until they turned ivory, and then moved to this ossuary. The skulls are intricately decorated with floral and wreath designs.

Hallstatt Skywalk – Welterbeblick

After wandering through the town, we set off to the Hallstatt Skywalk – Welterbeblick. You can get there by cable car for € 22 or on foot. The skywalk and the salt mine are on the same mountain. We chose to hike there. The skywalk is about 1 km from the town but involves a significant climb. The path is well-maintained and clearly marked (you pass the cable car, take the first left, and just follow the signs). It takes about 50 minutes to reach the top at a leisurely pace. When we reached the top, the fog had cleared, revealing a completely different view of Hallstatt than the one we’re usually accustomed to.

Here, you can take a break at the Rudolfsturm restaurant, visit the Salt Mine – the oldest in the world, now a museum, or simply enjoy the view.

view of hallstatt from skywalk

Salzwelten (Salt mine)

If you want to visit the salt mine as well, the price is €40 for adults and €20 for children. This oldest mine in Europe, with its oldest wooden stairs, has now been transformed into a museum.

During your visit, you will receive miners’ clothes, slide down wooden slides, ride a miners’ train, immerse yourself in the world of salt and miners’ fates through multimedia content in a cinema 400 meters underground, and much more.

Once we descended back into Hallstatt, I felt a completely different atmosphere. The number of tourists in such a small space was astounding. The morning’s tranquility was replaced by the buzz of visitors and the clicking of cameras. We went on another walking tour, picked up some souvenirs, and enjoyed this day-long fairy tale.

I hope I’ve managed to convey at least a bit of the atmosphere and made it clearer why Hallstatt is number one on every list of  day trips from Salzburg .

Best time to visit Hallstatt

The tourist season lasts from April to October, but Hallstatt offers unforgettable experiences whether it’s summer or winter.

If you are a fan of active vacations, Hallstatt in summer seems to be the ideal place for spending time in nature, walking, hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking, paragliding, as well as kayaking, diving, and swimming.

The water is cold but clean, and locals swim in the lake. If you’re not sensitive to cold, go for it! For exploring nearby places, you can use boat transport on the lake if you haven’t come by your own car.

A visit to the ice cave in the Dachstein glacier, or going to the top of Krippenstein to the 5 Fingers viewpoint – a five-pronged platform where you will literally have ‘your head in the clouds’ – is highly recommended. In winter, you can try your hand at real Alpine adventures here.

Where to Eat in Hallstatt

I recommend Braugasthof. It is a small restaurant with arguably the tastiest and very affordable food. This tavern, with walls nearly 1 meter thick, has a long tradition of about 700 years. It was originally a place where salt was produced.

It consisted of three houses, which over time were merged into one and converted into a pub. Here you can now try very tasty Austrian specialties. Vegetable soup, Wiener schnitzel, and apple strudel will nicely warm you up after a walk by the lake.

If you want beer, order a beer from the Salzburg brewery Stiegl, which in the past acquired the rights for beer production.

Useful Tips for a day trip to Hallstatt

In Hallstatt, there is one supermarket which even locals say is very expensive, something I have personally experienced.

If you have come to Hallstatt by car, it will be more practical for you to drive to a nearby town called Bad Goisern, where you can find supermarkets that are up to three times cheaper. Also, it’s worth knowing that the opening hours are usually until 6 pm.

If you really want to take a boat ride but find the price of a cruise high, there is also a ferry that can take you to the eastern shore of the lake for €3.5. The ferry here serves as a substitute for city transport, which does not exist on land.

By doing this ‘3 in 1’ act, you will be able to take the famous photograph of Hallstatt, enjoy a boat ride on the lake for much less money, and have the opportunity to see neighboring places like Obertraun or Bad Goisern.

Happy travelling!

Salzburg Hallstatt itinerary — Day 1: Discover ancient Salzburg

Salzburg

Salzburg is a small city, so you only need more than 2 days to fully explore this city. I’ve put together a short list of 5 places I’ve visited and these are my selected places for you to not spend much time to visit too many castles, churches. These places will help you discover Salzburg’s lifestyle, culture, and architecture most specifically.

The road to the Hohensalzburg Fortress: This 11th century fortress is the symbol of Salzburg, you will find this structure at the highest point in the city, walk and stop by at this beautiful medieval fortress, the way up here is also very beautiful, especially in the fall.

Hellbrunn Palace: The beautiful architecture built in the 17th century during the Renaissance. A beautiful building to visit. Sometimes there will be classical concerts for you to listen to music in the place where Mozart was born. (Address: Fürstenweg 37, 5020 Salzburg, Austria/Hours: 9:30AM–7PM).

Get lost in the old town of Salzburg: The historic centre of the city of Salzburg is a UNESCO world heritage site, a must-visit place because you can see many famous tourist attractions with just a few steps. The entire city is really an old town but Salzburg Old Town is recognized in the area of Salzburg Cathedral & the well-known Getreidegasse shopping street where you can admire the quaint architecture and make the most of your time to shopping lots of local products. Here you can also visit the Plaza de Mozart where there is a large bronze statue of Mozart.

Salzburg street

Petersfriedhof: The Saint Peter’s Cemetery and burial place at Nonnberg Abbey monastery – the oldest cemetery in the Austrian city of Salzburg, located at the foot of the mount Festungsberg with the Hohensalzburg Fortress atop of it. It is one of Salzburg’s most popular tourist attractions, with its unique baroque architecture. If you on the way to visit Hohensalzburg, why not stop by?!

hallstatt day trip from salzburg

Strolling along the banks of the Salzach River: It is not like the Seine River, but it is the place to help you see the most complete Salzburg panorama. Crossing the beautiful Salzach river, there is also a love bridge that many couple locked their love locks, the bridge is very sturdy unlike Paris, so your love lock will not be removed. If possible, you should book a cruise tour to sailing along the river to see the whole city.

Salzburg Hallstatt day trip — Day 2: Lost in Austrian countryside in picturesque village of Hallstatt

hallstatt day trip from salzburg

Many of you will choose to go from Vienna to Salzburg, but I sincerely recommend that going from Salzburg will be more beautiful because you have the option of taking a bus that will help you admire the whole Austrian countryside.

hallstatt day trip from salzburg

Bus 150 from Salzburg will take you to the village of Bad Ischl then bus 542 will continue to take you to Hallstatt Lahn. When you come to Hallstatt, what should you do?

  • Walking around Lake Hallstattersee to see nature, wooden ancient houses
  • Get lost in the fairy-tale village of Hallstatt with its charming old houses
  • Get on the cable car to go to the salt mine
  • Or take the cable car to reach the Top of Hallstatt to have a panoramic view of Hallstatt from above

hallstatt day trip from salzburg

You can choose to spend a night in Hallstatt or return to Salzburg to stay because Salzburg will cost you less.

Hallstatt trip from Salzburg — Day 3: Salzburg again or climb Dachstein mountain

This time you can choose as you want, drop by cafes, delicious restaurants in Salzburg to taste local specialty or climb Dachstein mountain. But you should note a big thing is that Dachstein Krippenstein will be closed in November because it is the low season. I highly recommend you going to this place if you intend to spend a night in Hallstatt as it’s only a 10 minute bus or taxi ride away. If you departing from Salzburg, remember to go early to be able to explore both Hallstatt and Dachstein on the same journey. The bus fares is also quite cheap, less than 10 euros/trip.

hallstatt day trip from salzburg

You also can combine to visit Salzburg, Hallstatt and Dachstein in one day trip but it’s quite rush. However if you plan to visit in summer, it’s possible because European summer days are longer than in other seasons.

Salzburg Hallstatt itinerary: Which season should I go?

The fall from October to November is the best season to visit both Salzburg and Hallstatt because the weather is pleasant, not too cold and not too hot. Especially nature is dyed in impressive yellow that makes landscape look more splendid than ever.

hallstatt day trip from salzburg

Winter from December to February is also quite an impressive season, also a good time to come because you can see and playing with snow in the ancient village of Hallstatt and skiing in Dachstein. However, at this time, the temperature down to -10ºC will make you a bit uncomfortable.

hallstatt travel blog what to do in hallstatt photos picture trip guide (1)

Spring from March to May is the most pleasant season, you can still witnessing snow in Dachstein but you can’t skiing, but in return, this season has more sunny days. I will not recommend going in summer, because it is quite hot.

Salzburg Hallstatt day trip: Where should I stay?

I recommend staying in Salzburg if your budget is not very big. a&o Salzburg Hauptbahnhof  ( Agoda.com or Booking.com ) is my favorite hotel because there is a dorm bed option for only $25/night, or a double room for 2 people is $65/night. Especially, it owns modern space, many amenities as well as located only 200m from Salzburg Hbf station.

hallstatt day trip from salzburg

However, if you like the feeling of waking up in a European village, staying in Hallstatt is not too bad, the cheapest price for a double room in Hallstatt is about $60/night.

Hallstatt Hideaway

You can find more, check rates, availability & booking for Hallstatt hotels on Agoda.com or Booking.com .

Getting around Salzburg

Salzburg

Salzburg is small so you can moving easily with… your feet. However, if you are lazy, you can buy a 24h pass O-bus and single bus tickets for only 4 euros/person/24h to getting between different tourist attractions. However, public transport starts operating at 5:30 am.

Salzburg airport is also very close to the center, if your flight depart too early, you can take a taxi for only 15 euros/way from Salzburg Hbf station.

Salzburg Hallstatt day trip: Getting from Salzburg to Hallstatt by bus

As mentioned above, from Salzburg to Hallstatt by bus, you have to travel by 2 different buses, transit at the village of Bad Ischl. Traveling time is about 1 hour 45 minutes.

Bus 150 from Salzburg to Bad Ischl

hallstatt day trip from salzburg

From Salzburg, at Central Station, take the bus 150 to Bad Ischl. Wait 20 minutes, there will be the next bus 542 to Hallstatt.

Bus 542 from Bad Ischl to Hallstatt Lahn

Take the bus 542 and Post Bus, when you get on bus 542, sit and waiting for the last stop, and the driver will ask you to transfer to the waiting Post Bus to Hallstatt Lahn, if you want to climb the snow mountain of Dachstein, just tell them to take you to Ice Cave. The last bus from Hallstatt Lahn back to Bad Ischl is at 5:30pm, so you have to watch time carefully.
