Famous Hawaii Movie Tour®

Lights, camera … action! If you’re a film buff, this Kauaʻi movie day tour is especially for you. With its natural beauty and tropical landscapes, Kauaʻi has long been a sought-out destination for Hollywood. You’ll love recognizing the iconic locations and backdrops from all your favorite films. For the maximum experience, immerse yourself in movie clips aboard the tour minibus and see how filmmakers made the island of Kauaʻi translate onto the silver screen.

See where Harrison Ford and Anne Heche survived a crash landing in Six Days and Seven Nights. Relive the fate of those shipwrecked on Gilligan’s Island and feel just like a competitor in The Amazing Race. Check out the waterfall shown in the opening credits on Fantasy Island and remember, dead men tell no tales on Pirates of the Caribbean. Also don’t forget about a classic Jurassic Park tour.

Want more movie trivia? Check out our Hawaii Movie Tour ® Location Guide for more information about different movie locations in Kauaʻi.

Tour Highlights (* denotes stops made)

  • Wailua Falls (Kauaʻi)* – A 173-foot waterfall located near Lihue that feeds into the Wailua River. Most recognized in the opening credits for television show Fantasy Island, Wailua Falls has also made cameos in Dragonfly, Castaway Cowboy, The Amazing Race and Tropic Thunder.
  • Hanamāʻulu Bay* – The ancient birthplace of Kawelo, a member of Kauaʻi’s ruling family, the bay has made appearances in productions like Donovan’s Reef, Pagan Love Song, Six Days and Seven Nights and Voodoo Island.
  • ʻŌpaekaa Falls Lookout* – A beautiful and accessible waterfall on the island, this is where scenes from Donovan’s Reef, Lt. Robin Crusoe, USN and Seven Women from Hell  were filmed.
  • Kapaa Town – A beachside town where Jurassic Park was filmed. There’s something very nostalgic about a Jurassic Park tour.
  • ʻAliomanu – This picturesque, isolated beach was a perfect setting for Six Days Seven Nights and Voodoo Island.
  • Moloaʻa Beach* – A horseshoe-shaped beach on the northeast shore of Kauaʻi, you may recognize scenes from Gilligan’s Island and Castaway Cowboy.
  • Hanalei Pier* – A gathering place for the people of Hanalei seen in Miss Sadie Thompson, Wackiest Ship in the Army, South Pacific , and more.
  • Hanalei Valley – A valley of taro patches, one of the most photographed places on the island, and was filmed in Uncommon Valor.

Hanalei Valley

This was such a fantastic tour that we will probably do it again in the future!

Our tour guide was wonderful. She was full of fun-filled facts about the island, Hawaiian culture and of course, told us about all the movies and movie locations. By the end of the tour, we had learned a lot about not only about movie making on Kauaʻi, but a lot about the island itself. This tour is definitely worth doing.

We planned this tour even before leaving the mainland as we expected it to be the highlight of our trip. It was a fun and relaxing way to see Kauaʻi as we watched film clips that were timed to match the arrival at various points of interest. Now that we are home, we are watching the movies again with our new memories!

Our bus driver was Sam! He was funny and informative. We loved being able to see the island and movie clips from a different perspective! They also had just got new buses which were beautiful and comfortable! They also make stops for potty breaks and ample photo shoot time! I would recommend to anyone who had never visited the island! It helps give you ideas of where you might wanna go again when you’re on your own!

Our guide who I think was called Leone was lovely, funny and informative. The spouting horn was excellent and of course the canyon was amazing. We'd been to the Grand Canyon the week before and yes this one is smaller but prettier as its less dry. We also enjoyed some local shopping and a precarious rope bridge at one of the local towns. Description

Hollywood has long had a love affair with the beautiful island of Kauai. The film version of South Pacific was even responsible for giving the north shore's famous pinnacle the name "Bali Hai". Elvis and his hit movie Blue Hawaii led to the popular tradition of the Hawaiian Wedding Song and put the Coco Palms Resort (and the entire island) on the map! Some of the biggest Hollywood blockbusters have filmed here ... everything from Raiders of the Lost Ark, Pirates of the Caribbean, Jurassic Park, Six Days and Seven Nights, The Descendants, Just Go With It, the new TV show The River ... the list goes on and on and on ... and on!

The Kauai Movie Tour is your unique opportunity to visit some of these famous locations on an expertly guided tour. Your air conditioned minibus will take you to a variety of movie locations, while viewing clips of many notable scenes from movies that were filmed at the spot you are visiting. You'll drive past the spot where Nicholas Cage made his phonecall in Honeymoon in Vegas (Is it Kapa-a ... or Kapa-a-a???) Visit the Hanalei Pier which was featured in South Pacific and a host of other films. View the Kilauea Lighthouse from the overlook ... the northernmost point in the main Hawaiian islands.

Lunch is available for purchase during an extended stop in Hanalei Town ... you might want to eat at Tahiti Nui, a restaurant / Tiki Bar featured in the Descendants!

Kevin at Falls

Driving around the island of Kauai you see MANY beautiful sights that look vaguely familiar ... taking this tour will help you remember where you've seen them. It's fun to see movie scenes play out on a screen while looking out the window and seeing the very same spot in it's local context. This tour is also informative ... you'll learn a lot about the history of the island and the role that films played in launching the Hawaii tourist and wedding industries.

You'll drive by the location of Coco Palms Resort, which has given a glimpse of just how fast the jungle can reclaim unmaintained buildings in a tropical climate since it was shuddered following extensive damage from Hurricane Iniki back in 1992. Plans to restore / rebuild / raze the structures have been in the works and a subject of public discourse for years, and for a while there we were seeing progress. Demolition began on June 17, 2016 but work stalled and this construction site is currently off-limits to visitors. You can still see the lagoon and famous coconut palm tree grove that gave rise to the resort's name as you pass the site.

The movie "The Descendants" gave a big boost to the exposure of the town of Hanalei. You'll drive past the hedge that George Clooney popped up from behind at the beach, and see the Tiki bar called "Tahiti Nui" is a must for movie lovers! Lunch is on yor own during an extended stop in Hanalei ... Tahiti Nui is a great choice when you are on a "Movie Tour"! We also like "Chicken in a Barrel".

This Stunning State Park On Kauai's Shore Offers Scenic Hikes And Water Adventures

Rainbow over twin waterfalls

When people tell you to "go to your happy place," what do you imagine? It's a pretty good guess that a number of happy places involve the stunning beauty and magic of a Hawaiian waterfall. If you want to visit this place for real, the green, lush, and action-packed island of Kauai has a spot that has not one, not two, but three gorgeous waterfalls. One even has a pool you can swim in. This pretty spot that feels like it came right out of your imagination is Wailua River State Park , and that isn't all there is to do there. Sitting just around six and a half miles from the town of Lihue, the park has everything you need for a day trip to remember.

You can hike and kayak to the falls, explore a reconstruction of a Hawaiian village, see the remains of ancient sacred sites, and take a riverboat cruise to the romantic Fern Grotto. You can even see some waterfalls from the road. It's so lovely that you cannot afford to miss it. Almost every inch of Wailua River State Park is worthy of a postcard. Let's explore the park and what you need to know before you go to the dreamscape of a state park.

Kauai's Fern Grotto riverboat cruise

If anyone you know has been to the east side of Kauai, you've probably drooled a bit over the pictures of the lovely Fern Grotto. This spot is a lava rock grotto and cave with bright greenery around it, and ferns hanging over it like a veil. You can take an 80-minute cruise to the grotto with Hawaii Tours , which takes you through the river valley to this landmark. As you drift down the river, you'll pass some ancient heiau, or temples, as a tour guide regales you with wonderful stories about the history and culture of the area. There is even live music and a hula demonstration, as well as some hula lessons. The tour is around $30 for adults and $15 for kids, and it's one of those things you really can't leave the island without experiencing.

The tour (and park itself) is also great for birders. There have been around 25 species observed in the area, like the Hawaiian duck, ring-necked pheasants, black-crowned night heron, zebra doves, white-dumped shama, rose-ringed parakeet, and brown booby. In fact, there is even a bird checklist so visitors can record what species they spot. In addition, Wailua River State Park has picnic tables if you bring lunch, as well as restrooms, a water fountain, and a concession area so you can spend the day after your tour.

Kayaking and hiking to Kauai's dreamy waterfalls

You can rent kayaks for around $130 a day (complete with paddles, permits, and more) at Kayak Kauai at the Wailua River Marina. Then, head out for a peaceful 2.5-mile float down the river and a half-mile hike to see Secret Falls, aka Uluwehi Falls, with its 100-ft cascade. Take a dip in the beautiful pool before you return to your kayak for the full experience.

Then there's the astonishing Wailua Falls, which appears as twin spouts with an 80-foot cascade. You can see it from an overlook, and if it seems familiar, it was featured in the opening credits for the 1977-1984 TV series "Fantasy Island." Next, check out 151-foot 'Ōpaeka'a Falls, which can be viewed from the parking lot! Across from the 'Ōpaeka'a Falls lookout, walk around the Kamokila Hawaiian Village, which is a recreated 4-acre area showing what an ancient village looked like (as well as some sets from the 1995 movie, "Outbreak").

The park also features the Wailua Complex of Heiau or temples, with the remains of sacred sites, refuge sites, and royal birthstones. A few things to note: It can be muddy in the park, so wear proper shoes. You should bring mosquito spray and wear reef-safe sunscreen , which is the law in Hawaii. When you've taken it all in, there is still so much more to do on Kauai, including visiting  a great nearby beach park for snorkeling .

Is a Helicopter Ride in Kauai Worth It? Your Top Questions Answered

A re you thinking about booking a  kauai  helicopter tour but still have a lot of questions keep scrolling to find out whether or not it’s worth booking a helicopter ride in kauai..

If you have ever considered splurging on a helicopter tour, you are not going to find a better place in the world to do it than  Kauai .

Kauai is known for the lush, verdant jungle that covers most of the island, but it is largely inaccessible to vehicles.

In fact, some of the most iconic landmarks of the Garden Island are only visible from the water… or the air.

What is it like to take a helicopter tour of Kauai?

Do you remember that iconic moment in the original  Jurassic Park  movie  when they are approaching the island in a helicopter, and the dramatic theme music plays as they fly along the prehistoric-looking coast?

That’s exactly what it feels like during helicopter tours of Kauai.

Because that is exactly what you are doing!

That scene from Jurassic Park was actually filmed on the approach to the Na Pali coast, on Kauai’s North Shore, which is one of the two main reasons to take Kauai helicopter tours.

Na Pali is only viewable  by boat  or by Kauai helicopter rides, and if you want the most epic view of the landscape, a helicopter is the way to go.

The other reason to take a helicopter tour? Waimea Canyon. The “Grand Canyon of the Pacific.”

It is possible to see parts of Waimea Canyon by a combination of driving and hiking, but you will only get a hint of the wonder of this ten-mile-long canyon.

But flying through the canyon, past countless waterfalls, and seeing the jungle sprawled out below you – that is how you truly come to appreciate the sheer size and grandeur of Waimea Canyon.

Taking a tour of Kauai by air is an experience that you will not forget.

What is the process for taking a Kauai helicopter tour?

First, you will want to book it ahead of time for your Kauai vacation.

Yes, there are plenty of tour operators that you can find around the cruise ship terminal in Lihue that are happy to take same-day bookings.

But you will really want to do your research ahead of time and choose a reputable operator.

We went with  Mauna Loa Helicopter Tours  for their vast experience and impeccable safety record and because they are one of the very best helicopter tours for private tours.

When you arrive, you’ll go through a safety briefing, and then you’ll head out to meet your pilot at the airfield.

They will get you all buckled up, go over any last-minute safety reminders, and then you’re off! The vertical take-off is thrilling and nerve-wracking, but within minutes you are out over the jungles of the island.

Most Mauna Loa helicopter tours are in the 45-60 minute range, although you can find longer ones.

While some of the sites that they visit may vary, you can bet that every tour is going to show you Waimea Canyon, the rugged Na Pali Coast, and  Manawaiopuna Falls .

There are even tours available that stop midway through for a picnic and photo op!

What are the types of Kauai helicopter tours available?

When you are looking to book a helicopter tour, you will have a few options. You’ll first need to choose if you want to share the helicopter with other people or book a private tour.

Shared tours usually have 6 passengers. And while this doesn’t seem like much, it is possible that you will have your view impaired by another passenger.

If you are hoping to get good photographs of this for your Kauai vacation, this is particularly worrisome.

Some of the best Kauai helicopter tours are better than others for visibility, so read about the particular helicopter for any flight you are considering booking.

You also might not get seated next to your travel partner. They balance the helicopter for weight, so you will not have any say in where you sit.

The next thing you’ll need to choose is whether or not you want doors on your helicopter.

Opting for a Kauai doors-off helicopter tour gives you the advantage of having a better view and not getting any glare on your photos. It’s windier and sometimes a bit wet!

But Kauai doors off helicopter tours give you an unparalleled view of the scenery and make you feel much closer to the landscape.

If having the doors off seems inherently scarier, remember – it is not the doors that are keeping you safe. It is your seat harness and the skills of your pilot.

It will be imperative that you do not have any loose items on you when you fly. Cameras will need to be strapped to your body.

We opted for the private, doors-off tour.

While this was a splurge for us, we figured it was probably the only time we would ever do a helicopter tour, and we wanted to do it the best way we could.

We have not regretted this decision once! The best Kauai helicopter tours are pricey either way. May as well make the most of it on this stunning Hawaiian island!

Can you bring kids on a Kauai helicopter tour?

Yes, although the age requirements will vary by the tour operator.

Some operators have a minimum age of around 7, while others will allow children of any age, including lap infants (under 2), for free. Lap infants will not have a seat belt, however.

If you are traveling with young children, you will really want to think about if they will be able to handle sitting buckled into an adult-sized harness for an hour, especially considering they might not even be able to see past other passengers.

You also might not get seated next to your child, depending on the weight distribution, although most operators will try to seat families together when possible.

When we visited, we were  traveling with a baby  and a toddler. We ended up using a  local babysitter agency  and turned it into a wonderfully memorable half-day date.

  Are Kauai helicopter tours safe?

This is undoubtedly a question that has crossed your mind if you are considering helicopter rides in Kauai.

And given a few high-profile helicopter crashes in the last few years – including one on Kauai – it is only natural to be nervous.

Of course, there is always risk in something like a helicopter flight. They are statistically more dangerous than a commercial airplane flight, although they are less dangerous than flying in a private plane.

Tour-operated helicopters are significantly safer than private helicopters, as well.

Helicopter flight has become much less risky over the past few decades, but there are occasional incidents.

Of the Hawaiian islands, Kauai has seen the highest number of helicopter crashes, although they are still incredibly rare.

Ensure that you choose a reputable tour operator that adheres to the highest level of safety standards. Expect that if there is adverse weather, your tour will be canceled.

For this reason, it is a good idea to book your helicopter flight early in your trip so that you can reschedule if needed!

We never felt unsafe during our helicopter tour. The flight was smooth, and we were impressed with our pilot’s level of experience.

Is a Kauai helicopter tour worth the money?

Without a doubt, yes!

The breathtaking scenery of the NaPali Coast and Waimea Canyon are best viewed from the air, especially a bird’s eye view!

There is no better way to experience the natural wonder of the Garden Isle than by flying above the jungle in a Kauai island helicopter.

It is a once-in-a-lifetime type of experience that you will treasure, along with incredible photos, especially if you choose a doors-off tour.

If you are coming to Kauai, I highly recommend taking a few hours out to see the beauty that this island has to offer!
