Iconic Trails of Glacier by Guided Horseback Trail Rides

Historically, guests to Glacier arrived by rail and spent their visit traveling between chalets and camps that were set approximately a day’s horseback ride apart. Today, horses are still used to deliver supplies deep in Glacier’s backcountry where vehicles cannot go. Be a part of this past and present tradition to enjoy the Park in a classic and beautiful way.

Trips inside the park originate from Apgar and Lake McDonald near West Glacier and from Many Glacier near St. Mary. Half day and full day trips are available.

In East Glacier, steps from  Glacier Park Lodge , enjoy a guided horseback trip with Glacier Gateway Outfitters along the western border of Glacier National Park into the heart of Native American Land. Guides will direct you along mountainous trails where you have the opportunity to see wildlife and specacular views of the Two Medicine valley of Glacier National Park.

Outfitters outside the Park also offer unique trail riding experiences on horseback. Bar W Ranch in Whitefish is located up the street from  Grouse Mountain Lodge . This dude ranch will get you suited up for a western adventure. With so many rideable options, there’s no reason not to saddle up and go for a ride Montana style.

Due to unique circumstances beyond our control, we are not able to book this activity in our call center at this time. For current rates and information please contact the outfitters directly at:

Discovering Montana

The Best Horseback Riding in Glacier National Park

Mark Barnett

By Mark Barnett

Glacier National Park has some of Montana’s most easily-recognizable and iconic scenery, which many would argue is best viewed from the saddle of a horse.

Horses are still used today in the park to transport various supplies deep into the backcountry regions where there is no vehicle access.

If you are planning a visit to the national park or its surrounding regions, factoring in one of the most authentic Montana experiences going—a scenic trail or pack ride on horseback—could turn into a lifelong memory.

This tradition from the past is still very much alive today and is an unbeatable way to check out some of the common, as well as the lesser-known regions of the park.

glacier national park

It is possible to find guided horseback rides that set out from corrals inside the park. These tend to be in the tourist regions of Many Glacier , Lake McDonald , Apgar , and West Glacier  depending on which outfitter’s services you opt for.

Half-day and full-day trips are typically offered, and aside from the main outfitters that work within the boundaries of the park, you’ll also find trips heading in from operations from surrounding towns like Whitefish and Bozeman .

Horseback rides are not available in Glacier National Park in winter, and visitors should be aware that once the rides are booked the routes may still change due to weather and other factors overseen by park rangers. Aside from advance reservations, you’ll need a backcountry permit which your guide will be aware of.

In this article, we will take a look at the best horseback riding in Glacier National Park and the amazing views you can expect to see.

Horseback Riding in Glacier National Park

  • Swan Mountain Outfitters
  • Glacier Gateway Outfitters
  • Wild River Adventures

swan mountain outfitters

1. Swan Mountain Outfitters

Swan Mountain is the main operator of horseback riding stables in or near Glacier National Park. They have well-groomed and well-trained horses, knowledgeable local guides, and some of the most impressive scenery you are ever likely to lay eyes on.

The outfitters offer one and two-hour rides, half-day, and full-day rides. All rides require a 45-minute period beforehand both to organize the horses and equipment and to give the required safety talks.

All three corrals are inside Glacier National Park. The outfitters have stables at Many Glaciers on the park’s eastern side, at Lake McDonald and Apgar on the west side, and they also have another slightly different option just outside the gates in West Glacier.

The Many Glacier Trails (from June to September)

The Many Glacier Corral is behind the main Many Glacier parking lots, upwind of the Many Glacier Hotel. This entire valley is personified by sweeping views although it does tend to be much windier than the stables across on the West side of the divide. Various tips are offered from this corral, with rides conducted at a walking pace only.

One example of the routes included in this region is the two-hour Cracker Flats ride. This is an easy enough ride through wooded terrain and open fields with some lake and mountain views.

On top of that is the half-day ride to Josephine Lake, which is a little more challenging but does feature some amazingly scenic views of glaciers, lakes, and peaks.

The Apgar Trails (from May to August)

The Apgar Corral is to be found in the vicinity of the park’s West Entrance, surrounded by lodgepole forest and featuring Lower McDonald Creek. Several trail rides from this location are also conducted, again at a walking pace only.

Visitors can choose ride options that last between one and four hours, covering destinations such as the Apgar Meadows, the C.M. Russell Trail, the Camas Loop, and the Apgar Lookout Trail.

Lake McDonald Trails (from May to September)

The Lake McDonald Corral is just across the road from the Lake McDonald Lodge and right next to the biggest of the national park’s 250 alpine lakes.

Several rides operate from this location covering one and 2.5-hour trips to Cedar Forest and Upper MacDonald Creek, as well as full-day rides to Sperry Chalet and Trout Lake. All rides are conducted at a walking pace only.

West Glacier

There is also a fourth location operated by this Outfitter just outside the park in West Glacier. The corral is not much more than a mile from the park’s West Entrance and these rides will suit anyone trying to escape the rush of entering the park.

Rides from the West Glacier Stable cover 1-3 hours in the saddle in destinations such as the Lodgepole Loop, West Glacier Gateway, and the West Glacier Lookout.

The routes typically traverse low hills of pine and aspen before heading up to a viewpoint in the Great Bear Wilderness Area just to the national park’s south.

Planning a Ride

If you are planning a trip with Swan Mountain Outfitters you might spend some time perusing the various available options and their respective regions within the park.

Drop camp services are also offered by the operation which involves packing the riders’ gear into designated backcountry campgrounds using stock. For many adventurous types, this can be a great alternative to backpacking. You can get more details on the operations trips and rates HERE

2. Glacier Gateway Outfitters

glacier gateway outfitters

The famed Glacier Park Lodge in East Glacier and the southeast corner of Glacier National Park is where guests can partake in a guided horseback trip with Glacier Gateway Outfitters .

The routes span the western shoulder of the park and venture into Native American Land. The experienced and helpful guides will encourage new and experienced riders alike along the mountainous trails.

Participants can expect plenty of wildlife viewing opportunities, not to mention some ridiculously impressive views of the park’s Two Medicine Valley.

3. Wild River Adventures

wild river adventures

There are other outfitters offering services such as fishing or floating who also include combination horseback riding trips. If the idea of a spot of rafting on top of some horseback riding sounds like your thing, then read on.

As it turns out, Wild River Adventures is the only outfitter in the region of the national park providing horseback riding combined with white-water rafting.  These trips allow visitors to experience a combination of two of the best outdoor activities in the park which equals a complete day of fun.

This is done in tandem with the main Glacier Park riding outfitters who we’ve already taken a look at—Swan Mountain Outfitters. The Swan Mountain wranglers will first guide you on a 2 or 3-hour journey through open meadows and wooded forests featuring the Great Bear Wilderness Area.

You will then continue with a half-day of river rafting which will surely leave you ready for hearty dinner—another option provided by the outfitters if you fancy it.

Guided Adventures by Horseback

Saddling up in Montana is an essential part of the Old West experience. And with thousands of miles of horseback riding trails to explore, there are options (and lessons) for every experience level. Our guides can take you out for a few hours on a flat creekside trail, a day-long journey into the mountains of Glacier National Park, or a multiday pack trip into wild country like the Bob Marshall Wilderness. Either way, a guided horseback riding trip allows you to experience the beauty of Western Montana’s breathtaking landscape from a traditionally western vantage point.

If you’re ready to hit the trail, here are a few of Glacier Country’s choice locales and guide services.

Can we hire a guide for hikes?

' class=

In my opinion, the free ranger-led hikes are a great resource in GNP. You can check here for last year’s schedules to get an idea of what is offered:

https://home.nps.gov/applications/glac/inforequest/inforequest3.cfm

Glacier Guides offers guided hikes - as a group or privately. I haven’t used them personally, but have seen a few of their guides on the trail, and they seem pretty knowledgeable.

FWIW, you don’t need a guide to hike in GNP - the trails are well marked and easy to follow. However, guided hikes are nice if you like to learn while hiking.

Swan Mountain Outfitters offers horseback riding tours in the park. I don’t ride, so can’t comment on the best tour. However, if you are used to riding and are interested in a full day tour, Cracker Lake is an amazing destination.

https://www.swanmountainglacier.com

horse tours glacier national park

If you choose to hike independently...and that is easy...you really should carry bear spray and know how to use it. Look at the following...it is a site that has ad-free, narrated videos of all of Glacier’s trails and two great rip and waterproof maps. Trail maps are color coded along each trail as to steepness as you go along them. https://www.hike734.com

................

The Best horseback rides are from Many Glacier Stables and to Cracker Lake as mentioned above. Those on the west side tend to meander more through tree jail and have much less scenic destinations.

...............

The only Rafting and float trips are from West Glacier in case that is of interest. Those are really fun in the early season when the water is rushing.

The Red Bus Crown of the Continent tour is a comprehensive driving tour with narration and that is often a good introduction to the park. http://www.glaciernationalparklodges.com/red-bus-tours/west-side-tours/

Thank you so much for the info. So excited to visit glacier but am getting a little nervous about the Bears. Someone said to bring a loud horn besides spray . We r taking our 14 year old grandson and should have a group of 8-10 people . I want to c so much but am getting a little nervous about the Bears.

Do not bring a loud horn.

Don't be afraid of the bears. But certainly be bear-aware while hiking and enjoying the park. Chances are you will only see them from the road (that's where I've seen most of my bears). Carry bear spray and make noise (by talking/calling out) while hiking.

Read up on GNP's advice for how to act while hiking in bear country:

https://www.nps.gov/glac/planyourvisit/bears.htm

I would not carry a horn, it will only irritate other hikers. Have someone in your own hiking group carry the spray and go on Ranger led hikes. Or go on one of the guided hikes....they carry the spray. Don’t buy Bear Bells...we call them “Dinner Bells”. Instead carry a tin can loosely filled with rocks that rattle and make noise.

Bears do NOT stalk you like mountain lions do. NO, don’t worry about those...you will not see one in Glacier. It is mama bear and her cubs that are most easily startled. In fact, we visit Glacier several times every single year and there are many times when we see NO bears at all, even from the car . The park Rangers will mark/close trails if bears have been seen or reported as frequenting. They have also been using a “bark ranger” to chase off mountain goats. http://flatheadbeacon.com/2016/05/27/bark-ranger-protect-glacier-park-goats/

Just don’t have smelly food in camp or on the trails. Carry electrolyte added water to prevent dehydration and sealed up protein bars instead. Also sunscreen, lip balm, eye drops, deet-free insect repellent and binoculars. If you have binoculars you will be able to see some of the distant animals up closer instead of wondering if “those spots of white or black” are animals or not.

Thank you for the info.

Thanks for the info. Makes me feel a little better to hear from people who hike out there often:)

Thanks so much think I will do that. Where did u get the guide schedule?

Montana Wilderness Horseback Pack Trips

Why Choose a Wilderness Pack Trip?

Ride into the backcountry and embrace the ultimate calm and pristine beauty of the wilderness. Our guides, camp jacks, and camp cooks take care of the packing, set up, and chores associated with camp life and horse care. This leaves you to let all your cares melt away as you enjoy life’s simple pleasures and the blessings of mother nature. Travel by horseback is a deep-rooted piece of American heritage.

For most folks, the wilderness is no longer accessible as they are born into and wrapped up in the hustle and bustle of city life. For some even, the idea of entering the wilderness is intimidating. This is where Swan Mountain Outfitters comes in- we are passionate about providing all folks (even beginners!) a route into the wilderness in a way that showcases its rugged beauty and builds a new rapport with nature. We believe the more people who can share this experience, the better chance America’s lands have of being protected for future generations to enjoy, appreciate, and get back to their roots.

“Your staff was excellent and the camp comfortable. I felt safe at all times. The food was tasty and plentiful. I not only had a great time but learned a great deal about everything from horses and mules to fishing, hunting and just plain sightseeing and relaxing. The trip was so perfect I cannot stop talking about it! -Howard Pyles”

What to Expect on Our Wilderness Pack Trips

Your trip begins in Northwest Montana’s Swan Valley . An often-overlooked gem, the Swan Valley has all the beauty of glacier country, but is nestled quietly apart from the nearby big attractions of Flathead Lake, Glacier National Park, and the big city of Missoula.

From our “base camp” in the Swan Valley, you’ll greet your guides and they’ll begin packing up your duffel onto mules. Our guides will match you to a mountain savvy trail horse and provide some basic horsemanship instruction. Group sizes tend to be six to eight guests, so unless you’ve got a private pack trip, there may be some new faces to greet too. You’ll then hit the trail and make the 14 mile journey following Lion Creek up from the valley floor to our “upper camp” which rests just on the very border of the Bob Marshall Wilderness.

Upper camp, being 14 miles from the nearest road, electricity, or plumbing, offers a quiet and serene camping setting. Camp is located right on the bank of Lion Creek, and although there is no fishing allowed in the creek you are more than welcome to jump in and cool off! Breakfast and dinner are served family style in the cook tent, while lunch is enjoyed on your daily excursion. You will stay in wall tents (large canvas tents that a person can stand and move about easily inside) with cots and foam mattress’s await you for a good night’s sleep. There is a shower tent in which you can enjoy a hot shower from heated creek water, and two latrines just out of camp for privacy.

Daily Excursions

The next morning, awaken to birds chirping and head to the cook tent to get a hot cup of coffee. After a hot breakfast and some time to gather your things for the day, you’ll get back on your horse and hit the trail!

The Bob Marshall Wilderness: The beautiful Bob is hard to beat! There are endless views and several mountain lakes to fish at and enjoy. To get there you will leave camp and continue up the trail to Lion Creek pass. The pass into the Bob is 9 tight switchbacks over a mountain ridge, but have no fear! Your horse has been doing this all summer, most have been at it for years and know how to keep you safe. Please note that as this trail is so steep we must walk back down the switchbacks. Once at the bottom of the switchbacks you may get back on your horse and continue the ride back to camp.

Swan Ridge: This adventure features beautiful views and quite often mountain goats! You will enjoy a different trail that takes you up to a high mountain ridge awash with wildflowers. You can either go for a short walk to enjoy the views or push yourself and reach up to 9’000 feet in elevation! This trail is also quite steep and will require walking down as well. This gives you time to truly enjoy your surroundings and pick as many huckleberries as you would like!

No matter where the day takes you, you’ll return to upper camp each night. Having a home base like this is a great advantage to be able to explore at your own pace each day, and, you only have to unpack your duffel once!

On your last day, we will enjoy breakfast around 8:00AM, after which you will hand your packed duffel to the packers. While they get the mules ready enjoy a cup of coffee and say goodbye to beautiful upper camp! Once the packers head out it will be your turn to mount up and ride back to civilization.

Many Glacier Trail Rides

horse tours glacier national park

This corral is located up the hill from the Many Glacier Hotel at the back of the main parking lot. The Many Glacier valley is characterized by sweeping views. The terrain here receives less rainfall and is much windier than our corrals on the West side of the divide.

We offer several rides from this corral. All rides are conducted at a walking pace ONLY. Trail use is dictated by the Park service and temporary closures or detours may be outside of SMO control.

This corral is NOT accessed via the Going-to-the-Sun-Road within Glacier National Park. It may be subjected to vehicle reservations (aka ticketed entry), heavy traffic, construction delays, and competitive parking. Click here to learn more.

Check-in at the stated time, but please plan to be with us for an extra 45 minutes for paperwork, mandatory safety briefing, and the loading process that is in addition to the listed “time in the saddle”. Time in the saddle is also an approximate.

Need help choosing a ride? Check out this page: Which Ride Should You Choose? While budget and schedule are likely the first things you will determine, your physical fitness is a huge factor and is very important to consider before you even hit the trail: All of our riders are expected to mount the horse from the ground without a mounting block. Be sure to discuss your abilities and expectations with all the members of your party.

SWIFTCURRENT LOOP

1 hour in the saddle, $85 per person.

  • Checks in at 3:30 pm
  • Online booking enabled
  • Inside Glacier National Park- plan for entry fees, heavy traffic, and limited parking!
  • Riders must be 8 years or older
  • Riders must be at least 48 inches tall
  • Riders must weigh no more than 225 pounds (including clothing and gear)
  • Riders who do not meet the above requirements or arrive late WILL NOT be able to participate with NO REFUND. View full restrictions and refund policy here

This non-stop ride is great for beginners or those with a busy schedule. This ride will be offered in the afternoon, when you’ll appreciate the shade of the lush forest. The trail heads along the side of a slope, then cuts down a rocky avalanche chute to the valley floor. Though the terrain is hilly, don’t expect big views. Instead, you’ll ride right past the quaint “stump lake” tucked away in the forest. This is an enlarged channel connecting Lake Josephine to Swiftcurrent lake and is a quiet spot frequented by moose.

Cracker Flats

2 hours in the saddle, $120 per person.

  • Checks in at 7:45 am and 10:00 am

This non-stop ride is offered in the mornings. The trail heads out along the shores of Sherburne Reservoir and on to Cracker Flats, where the old mining town of Altyn once stood at the turn of the century. Though the townsite is long gone, the clear space on “The Flats”  affords 360 degree views of all the mountains surrounding the Many Glacier Valley as well as great opportunities to see wildlife and wildflowers!  Of the two options for two hour rides, Cracker Flats is slightly shorter and the trail is slightly milder.

Josephine Lake

  • Checks in at 12:45 pm

This non-stop, picturesque horseback ride takes you down the first few miles of the Piegan Trail. As you ride along the heavily forested trail, you’ll catch glimpses of Swiftcurrent Lake, Josephine Lake and the Garden Wall. Keep your eyes peeled for trickling waterfalls and curious animals along the mountain side. This two hour ride is offered in the afternoon only. Of the two options for two hour rides, Josephine Lake is slightly longer and more rigorous. It is often more than two hours by fifteen minutes or so, and the trail has more hills and more forest than Cracker Flats.

Piegan Valley

Half day in the saddle, $215 per person.

  • Checks in at 8:00 am
  • Inquire to book with a reservation specialist

This morning half day ride winds through a lush green valley chock-full of water features, including streams and creeks and even waterfalls at certain points in the season. The ride offers views of Josephine Lake’s turquoise water, Grinnell Point and distant views of Salamander Glacier. Half way through the ride, riders can dismount, stretch their legs and take in more majestic views before heading back on the horses to the corral. Between our two half day ride options, the Piegan Valley trail is shorter (often less than 4 hours) and less rigorous- the hills are milder and the trail is more sheltered by forest than the Sherburne Overlook ride.

horse tours glacier national park

Sherburne Overlook

Half day in the saddle.

  • Checks in at 12:15 pm

This afternoon half day ride takes you along the historic trail past the Many Glacier Hotel and Swiftcurrent Falls. You’ll pass in and out of both forests and meadows as you traverse a mountain side, slowly gaining elevation and views as you go. You’ll dismount at the halfway point to stretch your legs before returning the way you came. On the return trip you’ll have excellent views looking down into the Many Glacier Valley. Between our two half day ride options, the Sherburne Overlook trail is longer (four hours or more ) and more suited to riders with experience due to it’s steeper terrain and more exposure to the elements.

horse tours glacier national park

Many Glacier Full Day Ride

Full day in the saddle, $325 per person.

  • Checks in at 8:15 am. Not offered in June
  • For your safety, bring 2 liters of water and your own lunch
  • Riders must be 10 years or older

For a full day in the saddle, we are permitted to take guests to either Cracker Lake or Poia Lake. You will NOT choose which trail to go on . Beginning in 2017, the National Park Service mandated equal use across these two trail systems to manage impacts from horses on high-use trails. As a result, the destination of our full day ride will be chosen each day by Swan Mountain staff based on current use numbers and trail conditions. You cannot request or be guaranteed either destination.

Both of these destinations are packed full of majestic views, the potential to spot big game such as moose and bear, and feature a stretch break at a beautiful lake.

  • The Cracker Lake trail takes you out along the shores of Lake Sherburne and up along Canyon Creek until you reach it’s outlet and the striking turquoise waters of Cracker Lake.
  • The Poia Lake trail takes you up and over Swiftcurrent Ridge. Once we crest the ridge, we will wind down along Kennedy Creek to it’s outlet at the foot of the quiet and pristine Poia lake.

We cannot provide lunch or water, you will need to bring your own. You’ll need your own vehicle to get from the check-in point at our corral to the actual trailhead.

Glacier National Park reservation information

Glacier National Park reservations are definitely something you need to consider when booking your tours. Since tours allow you to skip reservations and get into the park without them, this might be something to consider for your trip.

However, you will need your Glacier National Park pass or an annual national parks pass , so make sure to grab that before your trip.

Tips for booking Glacier National Park tours

Horseback Riding in Glacier National Park, Northwest Montana 2024: Scenic Trails and Tours

Annabel Petty

Published: March 20, 2024

Updated: March 29, 2024

Horseback Riding in Glacier National Park - Horses

I found horseback riding in Glacier National Park, Montana, to be a practical method for exploring the region’s mountains, glacial lakes, and wildlife.

You can choose guided rides in areas like Many Glacier, Lake McDonald, and Apgar, which Swan Mountain Outfitters offer.

These tours, led by experienced wranglers, accommodate both beginners and experienced riders like me.

I have the option of going on short rides or embarking on longer treks into the wilderness. For backcountry camping, I can also use drop camp services, which simplifies transporting my gear.

Best Time to Go There

Glacier National Park - best time to visit

The best time for horseback riding in the park is typically between June and September. This is when the trails are mostly clear of snow and the weather is stable. Swan Mountain Outfitters, the main operator for horseback riding in Glacier National Park, offers guided rides during this time.

By late September, some facilities begin to close, and the weather can become unpredictable.

Travel Essentials

Packing the right gear is essential for a comfortable ride.

For my trip, I usually take the following:

  • Clothing: Weather-appropriate attire, including layers and waterproof gear.
  • Footwear: Durable, closed-toed shoes or boots for riding.
  • Sun Protection: Sunglasses, sunscreen, and a brimmed hat.
  • Safety: A first-aid kit and bear spray, as Glacier National Park is bear country.
  • Hydration: A water bottle or hydration system is a must.

Permits and Reservations

Before I set off, I always make sure I have all the necessary permits and reservations. Trail rides within Glacier National Park may require booking, which can be done through official websites such as the National Park Service’s horseback rides page.

Any overnight stays in the park, if you plan to camp , also require a backcountry permit.

It’s important to plan, as these can be competitive, especially during peak season.

Guided Tours

Swan Mountain Outfitters

Swan Mountain Outfitters is the primary concessioner offering guided horseback rides in the park.

Available at Many Glacier, Lake McDonald, and Apgar, these tours range from short, one-hour outings suitable for beginners to full-day adventures for the more experienced rider.

Riders can expect to traverse diverse terrain, including forested trails and panoramic vistas.

  • Short Rides: 1-3 hours, perfect for beginners
  • Half-Day Rides: Including an ascent to the Apgar Lookout Fire Tower with extensive views
  • Full-Day Rides: Offering more in-depth exploration of the park’s natural beauty

Self-Guided Trails

For those who prefer to set off on independent excursions, a number of self-guided horseback riding trails are accessible. Trails like the Cosley Lake via Ptarmigan Trail offer significant elevation gain for a challenging ride.

It’s important to note that self-guided riders are responsible for ensuring their activities align with park regulations to protect both the ecosystem and the enjoyment of all park visitors.

  • Most Challenging: Cosley Lake via Ptarmigan Trail, with 5,764 ft of ascent
  • Other Popular Trails: Redgap Pass Trail , with 5,617 ft of elevation gain

Riding Safety Tips

  • Wear a helmet : Protecting your head in case of falls is crucial.
  • Check weather conditions : Be prepared for sudden weather changes and dress appropriately.
  • Get familiar with your horse : Take time to establish rapport with your horse for a responsive and smooth ride.

Wildlife Encounters

  • Keep a safe distance
  • Do not feed animals

Trail Condition

Trail condition in Glacier National Park.

The trails here vary widely. On one of the well-maintained paths provided by Swan Mountain Outfitters, I find that the terrain is specifically groomed for horseback riding, offering a smoother ride.

It’s important to note that some trails may still present challenges such as steep sections, rocky areas, or narrow paths. It’s essential to prepare for a range of trail types, from wide-open spaces to tighter trails that meander through dense forests.

The weather here can change rapidly. I always recommend checking the forecast and being prepared with layers. Summertime weather, while generally pleasant, can still present the occasional thunderstorm.

Even during peak season, mornings can be cool and afternoons warm. Ensuring an enjoyable ride involves packing for the possibility of rain and a range of temperatures.

How To Get There?

How To Get There

Arriving by car offers flexibility and convenience for travelers like me. Glacier National Park is accessible via Highway 2 and Highway 89. The main entrance, West Glacier, connects directly to the Going-to-the-Sun Road, a scenic byway that bisects the park.

Check the park’s website for road status as weather conditions can affect accessibility.

Public Transportation Options

For those not driving, there are public transportation options available. Glacier Park International Airport (FCA) in Kalispell is the nearest airport to Glacier National Park, with car rentals and shuttles to the park. Additionally, Amtrak’s Empire Builder train stops at West Glacier, East Glacier, and Essex, offering a stress-free experience to the park’s doorstep.

Bottom Line

Horseback riding in Glacier National Park offers a unique way to see its beauty, with Swan Mountain Outfitters providing guided tours across key locations.

Preparing with the right gear and respecting park guidelines ensures a safe and enjoyable trip.

Access is easy via car or public transport, making it an accessible adventure.

This experience underlines the importance of conserving such natural wonders for future enjoyment.

Annabel Petty

I’m Annabel, and traveling has always been my passion. My idea of fun? A lot of biking and hiking. From the Himalayas to the local hills, if there’s a path (or not), I’ve probably been there or it’s on my list.

How to Visit Glacier National Park in Montana

How to explore glacier national park in montana .

Revered for its stunning scenery and awe-inspiring natural wonders, Glacier National Park is an incredible destination, one that offers endless opportunities for adventure. Spanning more than one million acres, this magnificent park is home to approximately 25 active glaciers, 700 lakes, 200 waterfalls, and more than 700 miles of hiking trails. Commonly referred to as the “Crown of the Continent,” Glacier National Park is undoubtedly, one of the most impressive national parks in North America and one that is well worth visiting. From unforgettable attractions to thrilling hikes, cozy accommodations, and backcountry campsites, here’s how to visit Glacier National Park and make the most of your stay!

The National Park Reservation System

Before we go any further, it’s important to note that Glacier National Park does require vehicle reservations during the summer months. These reservations, which remain in effect during the park’s peak hours, are required of anyone who plans to bring a vehicle or motorcycle onto the premises. Dates for this vary depending upon the area and park entrance:

  • May 26th – September 10th: West side entrances (including North Fork, Camas, and West Entrance) require reservations between the hours of 6 am and 3 pm.
  • July 1st – September 10th: East side entrances (including Many Glaciers, Two Medicine, and Going-to-the-Sun Road from Rising Sun) require reservations between the hours of 6 am and 3 pm.

In order to access the park during these times, you’ll need to provide either a vehicle registration or service registration, as well as a park pass. You can purchase vehicle registrations ahead of time via Recreation.gov . Or you may use the registration received from any bookings you’ve made for lodging, camping, transportation, or tours within the park. Meanwhile, park passes can be purchased on the day of your visit from any entrance gate into the park. Or you may use an annual, senior, access, or military pass, if you have one.

If, for some reason, you’re unable to obtain a vehicle registration, you can still enter the park; you will just need to do so before 6 am or after 3 pm or on foot or bike.

Visiting Glacier National Park

Situated in the heart of Montana, Glacier is a massive national park that offers countless attractions and points of interest. Thankfully though, the park can be broken down into four manageable areas, which I’ve outlined for you below. Here you’ll find a complete guide of where to go and what to do in Glaciers 4 main areas.

Many Glaciers, East Glacier, & Two Medicines Area

Spanning the park’s eastern edge, this area is home to numerous lakes, waterfalls, forests, mountains, and glaciers. While this area of the park is a bit more remote and secluded, it still offers a variety of activities, including hiking, horseback riding, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, and guided boat tours.

Some of the best things to do in this area of the park include:

  • Cracker Lake Trail – A challenging 13-mile out-and-back hike that leads to the stunning blue waters of Cracker Lake.
  • Iceberg Lake Trail – A moderate 10-mile out-and-back hike that travels past several waterfalls, diverse vegetation, and active wildlife.
  • Garden Wall Trail to Glacier Overlook – A challenging 15-mile out-and-back hike that offers incredible views of Grinnell Glacier.
  • Triple Divide Peak – This rare watershed sends rainfall down to the Atlantic, Pacific, and Hudson Bay. You can hike to its peak or view it from afar.
  • Famous Glacier Boat Tours on Swiftcurrent Lake : Book at Many Glaciers Hotel or online

If you’d like to stay in this section of the park, you can choose from a variety of accommodations, including the Many Glacier Hotel , Swiftcurrent Motor Inn, and Two Medicine Lake Campground. Or alternatively, you can stay at one of the many hotels located just outside the park’s east entrance within the Blackfeet Indian Reservation. Check out some of the other options near Browning Montana and the parks East Side.

Wherever you hike in the park make sure to always carry bear spray, which can be purchased or rented at most hotels and stores in the area.

Follow along on my trip through Glacier National Park in the Video Below

Going to the Sun Road

Traveling across the park and through the Continental Divide, the Going to the Sun Road is a 50-mile-long road that offers a sneak peek at some of the park’s most popular attractions. From stunning lakes to incredible lookouts, unforgettable hikes, and majestic waterfalls, this section of the park is absolutely beautiful.

Some of the best things to do here include:

  • Highline Trail Loop – A challenging 11.8-mile overnight loop hike that offers stunning views of Grinnell Lake & Grinnell Glacier.
  • Gunsight Pass Trail – A challenging 20-mile point-to-point trail that offers access to Gunsight Lake and Gunsight Lake Backcountry Campground.
  • E-Bike Rentals – You can reserve your bikes ahead of time and travel along the Going to the Sun Road at your leisure.
  • Lake McDonald & McDonald Falls – Two major highlights within the park, both the lake and falls are worth a visit.
  • Scenic Boat tour on Lake Mcdonald
  • Red Bus Tours  : Scenic tours of the park in historic stretch red jeep like buses.

If you plan to stay along the Going to the Sun Road, there are several options for you to choose from, including the Many Glaciers Hotel in the East, Village Inn, and Sprague Creek Campground, or the Lake Mcdonald Lodge in the West. Another alternative, if you’d rather stay outside of the park, is Montana Duck Lake Lodge , which is located just beyond the park on the east end of the Going to the Sun Road. The West end of the park has many more lodging options in and nearby the town of West Glacier.

West Glacier

Encompassing the lower western half of Glacier National Park , West Glacier is home to several prominent park attractions, including a number of lakes, lookout points, and hikes. In addition to this, West Glacier Village, which lies just outside the park’s boundaries, offers a variety of tour experiences that park guests can partake in. West Glacier is the most common entrance for visitors and has the largest amount of restaurants, accomodations and tour operators in the park.

Some of the best things to do in West Glacier are:

  • Avalanche Lake Trail – A moderate 6-mile out-and-back hike that offers stunning views of Avalanche Lake.
  • Mount Brown Lookout Trail – A challenging 10-mile out-and-back hike (or horseback ride) that leads to an incredible lookout point.
  • Horseback Riding – Several companies offer guided horseback riding tours through this part of the park.
  • Flathead River – Traveling along the western boundaries of the park, Flathead River is a popular place to go whitewater rafting, you might enjoy this half day scenic float trip perfect for seeing the quieter side of the park.
  • Lake Mcdonald with a guide – For a guided hiking experience of one of the west side prettiest trails, try this local guide.

If you’d like to stay near West Glacier, the park has several options, including The Lake Mcdonald Lodge , the Sperry Chalet- (Reservations Highly coveted), Avalanche Campground, and Agar Village Lodge. Outside the park, you’ll also find a number of accommodations, including WanderCamp Glacier, which offers glamping-style tents.

Set along the northwestern section of the park, Polebridge is a remote area of Glacier National Park. With few amenities but lots of secluded attractions, it’s perfect for those looking for a more off-the-beaten-path experience.

Some of the best things to do near Polebridge are:

  • Bowman Lake Trail – This challenging 13.5-mile out-and-back hike follows the shoreline of Bowman Lake.
  • Numan Lookout – This challenging 11-mile out-and-back trail offers incredible park views.
  • Polebridge Mercantile – A historic must-visit attraction, this store and bakery dates back to the park’s founding days.
  • Logging Creek Ranger Station – Built in 1907, this ranger station is the oldest continually operating building in the park.

While there aren’t many accommodations in this area of Glacier, there are a few campgrounds that you can utilize, including Logging Creek Campground, Cowman Lake Campground, and Kintla Lake Campground. In addition, there is also a hostel and a bed and breakfast located just outside the park.

Travel Tips: Glacier has unpredictable weather, you won’t want to visit without a great raincoat, layers for changes of temperatures and some sun protection. My favorite t shirts for the outdoors are these  merino wool shirts from Unbound Merino.

Wilderness Permits for Glacier National Park

Regardless of your destination within Glacier National Park, you will need to obtain a wilderness permit if you decide to do any off-trail hiking or backpacking. These permits can be purchased either in advance via Recreation.gov or in person no more than one day before your trip. Most backpacking permits will be reserved in the early season lottery which usually starts in April of the same year. During the peak summer season, between June 15th and September 30th, only 70% of permits may be reserved in advance; the remaining 30% are available for walk-ins only on a first-come, first-served basis. Outside of this peak season, wilderness permits are only available for purchase in-person at one of the rangers stations in the park.

Exploring Glacier National Park

No matter where you end up in Glacier National Park, you’re sure to have an unforgettable time. Between the astounding views, thrilling adventures, and exciting wildlife sightings, Glacier truly is a national park unlike any other!
