About hunting in Alaska

The word Alaska means “The Great Land,” and the state’s nickname is “The Last Frontier.” Both are appropriate monikers for a state containing huge swaths of wild country and uninhabited areas—a true hunter’s paradise, home to North America’s largest and most sought-after game animals. Covering 365,000,000 acres, an area one-fifth the size of the entire United States, Alaska has plenty of room for the adventurous hunter to roam. Alaska has more than a dozen species of big-game animals as well as excellent small game and waterfowl hunting opportunities. Big-game species include bison, caribou, elk, muskox, wolves, black bears, Dall sheep, moose, brown and grizzly bears, Sitka black-tailed deer, and mountain goats. Most hunting in Alaska occurs between August and October, but bears may be taken in either fall or spring in some locations. Alaska requires nonresidents hunting brown/grizzly bears, Dall sheep, or mountain goats to be accompanied by an Alaska-licensed guide or by an Alaska resident at least 19 years of age who is a close relative, defined as within the "second degree of kindred.” Nonresident aliens are required to have a guide to hunt any big-game animal in Alaska. All big-game guides in Alaska must be licensed by the state. For some hunts in Alaska, it is possible to hire a transporter instead of a guide. These are licensed individuals and companies who help hunters get to remote areas by bush plane, boat, horse, ATV, snow machine, etc. The Alaska Department of Fish & Game ( adfg.alaska.gov ) has an excellent website with in-depth information about hunting in the state. Check the site for specific license and tag requirements for each species. The Alaska Professional Hunters Association is another great source of information about Alaska: alaskaprohunter.org .

ALaska Grizzly Bear Hunt

  • Our bears averages between 7 to 9 feet.
  • Spring hunts run from May 1st to June 15.
  • Fall hunts are from September 1 – 25.

Call 1 (907) 230-5130 to reserve your Alaska bear hunting trip.

The best time to book a bear hunt with us is in the Spring from May 1 to June 15.

For fall hunts, we like you to be available from September 1 to September 25.

Interior Grizzlies or smaller than their Brown Bear counterparts on the coast, but the hair and colors are unmistakable.

During some of our hunts, you usually will not see another human. This is good as bears have a very good sense of smell and do not tend to stay in areas that have a high concentration of humans around.

Alaska Dall Sheep Hunt

  • Alaska Range
  • Rams typically range from 37 to 42 inches
  • Travel through the Alaska Range on horseback across rolling hills and valleys.
  • Enjoy a secluded hunting area.
  • Must be in decent shape

Call 1 (907) 230-5130 to reserve your Alaska Dall Sheep hunting trip.

Our sheep hunts are based out of the Alaska Range. We have an excellent number of sheep in the area. Our rams typically range from 37 to 42 inches. The genetics for our sheep are a little different than other ranges in Alaska and Canada. Our sheep do not drop low below the jaw on all sheep, but they make up for this by flaring out at the tips with age. Some sheep flair up to 4 inches, which makes for a beautiful trophy.

Our areas are not exclusive, but we typically do not see many hunters in our area during our hunts.

The terrain is rolling hills and valleys, which is where the horses come in. Above that, up to 7500 feet are the mountains of the Alaska Range.

We have hunted this country for over 40 years, and we know the mountains and the trails that take us to the sheep.

Do you need to be in shape, yes, do you need to be a mountain goat, no!

Alaska Moose Hunt

  • We hunt by horseback
  • Spot and stalk and moose calling
  • Season runs from September 1 to September 25

Call 1 (907) 230-5130 to reserve your Alaska moose hunting trip.

Our moose hunting area is some of the best in the state! We have a very good number of Bulls and Cows in the Area.

Our Season starts on September 1 and closes September 25. We typically average moose from 55 to 70 inches. On a typical hunt, you can expect to see several different moose.

We do this in several ways. Sometimes glassing by horseback, other times spot and stock.

Calling moose in is one of the most memorable hunts you will have.

Our area is off-limits to motorized vehicles. You will not see any off-road vehicles during your hunt with us!

Alaska Caribou Hunt

  • Caribou hunts are on a draw only basis.
  • If you want to target a Caribou we recommend getting in touch with us early in the year prior to your hunt.

Call 1 (907) 230-5130 to reserve your Alaska caribou hunting trip.

Caribou hunts are on a draw only basis. If you want to target a caribou, we recommend getting in touch with us early in the year prior to your hunt. This will give us time to help you submit for the Alaska state drawing, which will be held in December. We help you through the submission process, so if successful, you will be hunting with us in the fall of the following year.

The great thing about hunting with us for caribou is that we have resident herd. They do not leave the country for months at a time. If you have hunted caribou before you understand what I am saying, a migrating herd may be hard to keep up with in other areas.

Your hunt could be a camping trip if they are not in your area for the dates you booked your hunt. Not a problem here!

Client Reviews

I have been blessed in my 52 years to have traveled most of North America, most of this travel involved hunting. I have hunted with Jim Nabulsi and Hunt AK Outfitters for Sheep and Moose in their exclusive hunting area. Both of my trips there were fantastic. The game I took there hangs proudly in my living room today. Jim and his guides, along with the camp cook, have always been very friendly, professional, and responsive. I would recommend him and his team to anyone. The venue they have there at camp on the banks of the river is absolutely incredible.

Thank you for an incredible experience! I’ve known a few guys who’ve paid a lot and ended up going home empty handed. The only way I can imagine that happening with Hunt AK Outfitters is if you can’t shoot!

Greatest hunting adventure of my life. The meals were top quality. The guides are the toughest men I have ever met, tenacious and dedicated. Saw a lot of wildlife. The amenities at camp were so good I had to remember we were in a true wilderness.

In 1969 Tony came to Alaska with the simple goal of having one of the top outfitting services in the state. After learning to fly in 1972 and later purchasing a Super Cub, he paid his dues as assistant guide for several years. In 1979 he earned his Licensed Registered Guide status (#498) and then became a Master Guide (license #105), and owner of Westwind Guide Service. All of our hunts are conducted in unit 19, 17, and 13 and we have been hunting these areas for the last 35 years, which is literally our backyard, our knowledge of this area is second to none.

Our old school philosophy of offering great service at a fair price has worked well for us. By only taking a few hunters each year we have maintained a high success ratio on trophy class animals. Based on the volume of return and referral clients we book, and feedback we receive, we know that we are providing unsurpassed service at a fair price. Give us a call and then call our references. "I have hunted 13 different countries on 4 continents; my spring brown bear hunt with my guide was one of the best I've ever been on! Highlight of my hunt was taking this 9' 8” bear after passing on several other smaller bears. Well organized and professional!”

Kent J., Denmark

After viewing several “good” bears I held-out for a really big one, then got it, a true 10 footer that officially made the B&C record books! Very GOOD bear hunting, good food, camps, guides, excellent equipment, well organized and comfortable.”

~ Mike L., Bozeman MT

Straight From TOM

Are you ready.

Tom Karshekoff was a senior Alaska hunting guide, a mentor and good friend. He was always the first one up in the morning, making coffee and tea. It could be blowing 40, foggy and raining. Tom would look at us and jokingly say “Are You Ready.” It would always get a smile or two from us.

Tom passed away right before JD Richardson (the owner) was able to take his registered Alaska hunting guides license exam. Upon passing the exam, JD and family were trying to come up with the name of our new Alaska bear and moose hunt venture.

JD’s oldest son who had guided with Tom for 4 years said “what about Are You Ready Adventures?” Right away we said yes! In our way “Are You Ready Adventures” was born to honor a world class guide, an excellent mentor and good friend with one of his favorite saying’s.

Alaska Caribou Hunts

Professionally guided fly-in caribou hunts in alaska’s arctic, caribou hunts.

Every year, we start our fall hunting season in August providing guided Caribou hunts. Our Caribou camps are located on high alpine lakes that are well used travel corridors. Typically we will take 2 guests per camp and plan for 8 days of hunting. Hunting is done within walking distance of our centrally located camp. The nearby tundra ridges make for great vantage points allowing us to spot migrating Caribou in all directions. Because they are such fast travelers and seldom linger in one spot for long, we focus our efforts in well known pinch points along the Caribou migration routes. Due to the unpredictable nature of Caribou migrations we have seen a wide range in the number animals per day. On several occasions, we have gone days without seeing a bull, to only then have literally over a thousand animals migrate through the valley in a single day!

Thanks to the healthy population and phenomenal camp locations we have nearly a 100% success rate on our guided caribou hunts.

Near camp, berry patches are a great place to find an arctic grizzly. Both bear and wolves can be harvested during our guided caribou hunts. Both predator species are found in higher numbers around the migrating Caribou, often following the herd. Fall bears are especially active as they fatten up for the coming winter. Bumper berry patches are generally good spots to find a bear along with any Caribou kill sites. A typical mature boar in the area will squire 7’ while some go over 8’. Although usually paler than their southern cousins they come in a wide range of coloration from reddish brown to the stereotypical “Toklat grizzly”.

Accommodations

Although there are many factors outside of our control during an Alaskan hunt, there are measures we take to insure a comfortable stay no matter what Mother Nature decides to throw at us. Camps are strategically placed to insure solid hunting locations within a close walking distance. As most of our falls hunting camps are accessed via float plane, we are typically set up on or near a lake shore. Guests are housed in canvas Sibly tents, heated with a wood stove and furnished with cots. A cook/mess tent is also set up to allow comfortable dining during adverse weather conditions. We take great efforts to prepare home cooked breakfasts and dinners that will satisfy any hungry hunter. While out hunting, lighter pack lunches are packed. All camps are supplied with at least one satellite communication device and appropriate survival gear.

Travel and Logistics

All of our guided trips originate in Fairbanks Alaska. We suggest booking a flight with an arrival date at least one day before the start date of your trip. There are several options of hotels near the airport that provide shuttle services. On day one of your trip we will pick you up at your hotel. If you have not already purchased your hunting license and tags, we will stop by Fish and Game before leaving town. From Fairbanks, we drive four hours north to Circle City. In this small rural community, your pilot will meet you with the float plane on the Yukon River. Most of our camps are accessed via float equipped Cessna 180. As we have to follow the strict laws of gravity, we ask that you keep your gear under 60lbs. Most flights to camp are an hour to an hour and a half. Due to the unpredictability of Alaska’s weather it is best to leave some flexibility in your travel plans. At times, delays of several days may occur due to severe weather keeping our airplanes grounded.

hunting trip to alaska

All of our guides are highly experienced and professional. Owner, Charlie Jagow, was raised hunting and trapping in the region, this experience has given him, not only knowledge of the area, but also a personal connection to the refuge and its wild places. Many of our hunting guides also live in the bush and have a life time’s experience worth of hunting in the Arctic. Hunting is a way of life for us. There are no schools or college courses available to train a guide; instead, this highly skilled profession is only learned from hands-on experience and apprenticeship. All of our guides have dedicated themselves to perfecting these skills. Guiding is not a job for us, it’s a passion. We love assisting our guest in the pursuit of a life time!

There are opportunities to fish in most of our hunting camps. Some of the smaller rivers provide some of the best grayling fishing the state has to offer. Many of our lake camps are inhabited by both pike and graying. Light tackle, spinners and spoons are our choice for catching both species.

Alaska Grizzly Bear Hunts

Moose & Grizzly Hunt, 2018

I’ve hunted Big Game extensively all over North America as well as the rest of the world for over 20 years.

I’ve done seven hunts in Alaska, the last two with Tyrrell’s Trails for moose and grizzly bear in The Brooks Range. This year will be my third hunt with them – I will go on a Dall Sheep hunt this summer with my son.

Luke Tyrrell runs among the best outfitting operations I have experienced. Logistics were flawless, equipment in great shape, hunting areas with an abundance of high quality game, and Luke is always there to “go the extra mile”. My guide, Wesley Tyrrell, was amazing, not only in tirelessly spotting and calling in trophy game (often “out of thin air”!). Packers were terrific – experienced, helpful, and most importantly, fun!

If you’re considering a hunt of a lifetime in The Brooks Range, I recommend you give Luke a call.

Big Game Guided Moose Hunt

Moose Hunt, 2018

This past September, 2018, I had the opportunity to hunt Moose with Luke Tyrrell of “Tyrrell’s Trails” in Alaska. I had made many trips to Alaska but I had never seen the Brooks Range. My expectations were high and I was not disappointed.

I had the good fortune of harvesting a great mature bull Moose. My personal guide, Mike Horstman, and Luke teamed together and worked hard to fulfill my dreams.

This was a great hunt located well above the Arctic Circle. There was lots of game, beautiful scenery, good food, comfortable accommodations and Great People!

A true Wilderness Adventure! I highly Recommend!

Dear Luke, Now that I am home and there has been time for everything to sink in, I thought I would write. I have hunted all of my life and been all over. I have taken nice animals before, but never 2 on the same hunt. Your hard work before and after my hunt made for my success.

Kudos to you and your professionals. I will recommend Tyrrell’s Trails to any serious hunter looking for the trip of a lifetime.

Premier Alaska Hunting Guide - Bear, Moose, Sheep, Caribou

Alaska Caribou Hunt

Guides that go the distance.

Caribou hunting in Alaska is an amazing experience. As the fall colors paint a wild scene in one of the last places in America that can truly be called “Frontier,” so do the last of the great caribou herds make their annual migration. The place is the Brooks Range, and the western Arctic herd of trophy caribou is the game. Arctic North Guides offers guided  caribou  hunts on this plateau stage, where the players are treated to the finest, and most consistent, caribou hunts available anywhere.

Caribou hunting in Alaska with Arctic North Guides.

While these lands are often called “barren,” nothing could be further from the truth. The North Slope of Alaska is alive with flora and fauna in almost infinite variety. Before the first of the snows fall, the animals that call this place their home in the summer move south in great migrations, whether borne of land, air, or sea. The caribou seek these lands for protection, escape, and food. While the word “pristine” is often used in Alaska, nowhere is it truer than in the rugged expanse of the Arctic.

The remoteness of Alaska North Slope in the Arctic cannot be overstated, nor can its unspoiled beauty. Hunts are exceptional on the North Slope due to its remote and untouched location. The caribou herd where our hunting trips take place number around 550,000. This is last of the ritual big game migrations on the continent, and they conjure up images within the mind of a time when the west was truly wild.

Lack of pressure makes our hunts unique, in that few ever lay eyes on this wild and unending landscape. With over 30 years guiding and outfitting hunts in the Arctic, our Alaska caribou hunting guides are proud to boast that 99 percent of our hunters have been successful at filling their tags with their own trophy big game animals.

Your Alaska Caribou Hunting Trip

The secret to our success is Location! Location! Location! Our area is wide and expansive as we operate three separate camps in addition to our main lodge. We can accommodate four caribou hunters at the main lodge while others fly out to one of our remote camps.

We track the caribou herds by air daily to keep apprised of their location and direction. This information is vital to keep our hunters locked in on all of the action and ensure their individual success. Because this is the largest and most consistent of all the herds, they always arrive like clockwork on August First or Second. After crossing the Colville River, the herd moves south through numerous mountain passes in one of the most incredible displays one can set their eyes on in this modern world. It is important to remain mobile during a hunt so as to intercept the herd as it moves. With 30 years experience in the Brooks Range, no one is better equipped to guide you on a caribou hunt of a lifetime, where success is virtually guaranteed with our proven Alaska caribou hunting guides.

Expanding Your Alaska Hunting Adventure

Our world class trips make for a truly unique and spectacular experience. We offer 2X1, seven day caribou hunts where you can explore and have the opportunity to hunt in the last great American frontier. Hunt Barren Ground Caribou in Alaska

Intro

David Alexandrowicz and his 2021 monster bull that grossed 454"

Though sometimes an overlooked and taken for granted species, a true Alaskan Barren Ground Caribou is a remarkable animal, a fun and adventurous hunt, and a great addition to any trophy room!

Our Alaskan Peninsula Caribou hunts are operated out of our Legendary David River Bear Camp approximately 20 miles SW of Nelson Lagoon. Once arriving at David River on the Bering Sea, you will be hunting either on our two Federal Guide Concessions or onto State Land where bands of caribou have been located. Although the Lower Alaskan Peninsula Herd is not a migrating herd and is smaller than some other herds in the state, they are well known for their great genetics and the potential for a Boone and Crockett animal. You can expect to harvest a bull in the 350 - 400” class with a few bulls a year going over 400”. These hunts are 7 days in length and we are now operating every September. Hunt dates are Sept. 16 - 22 and Sept. 24 - 30. On odd numbered years (2025, 2027 etc), we access our hunting areas primarily by airplane where you will be flown out to a spike camp location with your guide to a camp that where trophy bulls have been spotted or expected. This is a tent based hunt where you will be hunting spot and stalk on foot. On the even numbered years (2024, 2026 etc), all of our hunts are based directly from our David River Base Camp. You will be staying in cabins each night and accessing the hunt area via 4 wheelers. This is a great opportunity to hunt in a remote trophy area but with more comfortable accommodations for those not able to or wanting to do a tent based hunt. Success and trophy quality is equal on both of these hunts.

Wolves and wolverine are also available to hunt during this time. Ptarmigan and waterfowl hunting is also open during this time of year and are fun to chase once you are successful with your caribou, if time allows.

Caribou Gear List

Spike Camp Accomodations

Typical looking spike camp

Spike Camp Accomodations

Spike camps are strategically placed via Super Cub at established locations based upon the current movements of the Caribou. This is a spot and stalk style hunt where you and your guide will be glassing from a high vantage point close to camp. Camps usually consist of 2 sturdy expedition grade shelters: 1 for cooking and lounging in and 1 for sleeping in. Along with a heat source, good hot food, and a personable guide, we provide cots, sleeping pads, and sleeping bags to make it one of the most comfortable True Alaskan hunts. Satellite phones and Inreachs are in each camp and each guide checks into base camp each day.

For those hunts conducted out of our David River Base Camp, hunters will stay in cabins with a padded bunk and heater. Breakfast and dinner will be provided by our Camp Cook, lunches are normally taken with us and eaten in the field. 4 wheelers are used to access the hunting areas close to camp where caribou live and move through. From there, you will be on foot in a traditional spot and stalk hunt.

Licenses & Tags

Sal Dilorezo and his 2022 bull that scored 421"

Licenses & Tags

You must purchase a hunting license and a Caribou tag with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game before arriving. Wolves are also prevalent in the area. It is no longer required to purchase a wolf tag in GMU 9D.

Buy Your Alaskan License & Tag

Ptarmigan (grouse) hunting is available as well as waterfowl hunting. Brant and sea ducks are prevalent and fun to hunt when we have extra time. You will need to purchase a State and Federal Duck and Waterfowl Stamp. See the table below for information on tags and license fees. Fishing for Silver Salmon and Steelhead (if running) can provide much enjoyment if weather and time allows. If you hope to fish, a fishing license is required. See the table below for information on tags and license fees.

Although the Caribou season is not open during the Brown Bear season, it is possible to combo both hunts together into a 22 day hunt (7 day Caribou at the end of September followed by a 15 day Bear hunt). See our "Fall Brown Bear" page for more details.

Alaska Senate passes bill that ties hunting and fishing residency requirements to PFD eligibility

the Alaska State Capitol

Kurt Whitehead lives in Klawock on Prince of Wales Island, and every summer, he said, as the humpbacks and herring and salmon return, so too do the island’s seasonal residents.

“They’re basically tourists,” he said by phone Monday. “You can be nice and call them seasonal residents, but really, they only come to our state just for the hunting and the fishing, and sometimes they stay as little as one week, and sometimes they stay as much as maybe four or five months, but their whole intent is just to harvest as much as possible.”

Unlike most tourists, they’re able to buy fishing and hunting licenses reserved for residents. That’s because of the state’s eligibility requirements , Whitehead said — once you’re in Alaska for a year, basically all you have to do is keep a home in the state, plan to come back and not claim residency anywhere else.

“Some of them do have homes, but there’s a large majority of them that just have an RV parked on somebody’s lot,” Whitehead said.

Whitehead wants that to change. He’s been pushing for lawmakers to close the residency loophole, and on Monday the Alaska Senate passed a bill that would do just that.

In a 15-5 vote, senators approved Senate Bill 171 , which would tie residency to PFD eligibility — and that means that in most cases, you can’t leave the state for more than 180 days during the year and remain eligible. There are exceptions for people in the military, college students and some others, though there’s some debate about how consistently those are applied in practice.

Tribes, Fish and Game committees and municipalities from around the state submitted letters in support of the bill .

Retired New York police officer David Egleston of Thorne Bay told lawmakers he’d reviewed license sales for his community and found many seasonal residents and fishing lodge owners had received resident licenses.

“None of them owned a snow shovel in Alaska,” Egleston wrote .

A deputy director of the Alaska Wildlife Troopers told a House committee earlier this year that the loose definition of residency makes it difficult for officials to prosecute people who take advantage.

Resident licenses typically have higher daily catch limits and allow folks to participate in resident-only personal use fisheries, like dipnetting on the Copper or Kenai rivers. Or, take king salmon — in Southeast, nonresidents are limited to between one to three kings a year. But residents this summer can catch two per day. Resident licenses are also a lot cheaper — often four to five times less expensive than what nonresidents pay.

Clinton Cook leads the Craig Tribal Association, not too far from Klawock on Prince of Wales Island, and he said people who spend most of their time out of state shouldn’t benefit from the breaks the state cuts its residents.

“They’re a citizen when it’s convenient for them,” Cook said by phone Monday. “That’s not OK.”

Sen. Jesse Bjorkman, R-Nikiski, sponsored the bill in the Senate.

“When people who do not live permanently in Alaska capitalize on Fish and Game laws meant for residents, they diminish harvest opportunities for year-round residents, the people who shovel snow and stick it out throughout the entire course of the year in our great state,” Bjorkman said.

Sen. Mike Shower, R-Wasilla, said he’s concerned the new requirements could exclude some retirees who leave Alaska for extended periods despite a long history in the state.

“There were some concerns from a number of individuals about what this may impact, especially on those that may leave the state for the wintertime, which a lot of us do as you get older, go out and visit family and things like that,” Shower said.

He said he was also concerned it could violate the Alaska Constitution’s guarantee of equal access to fish and game resources.

Shower joined Sens. Shelley Hughes, R-Palmer, Robb Myers, R-Fairbanks, Scott Kawasaki, D-Fairbanks, and Kelly Merrick, R-Eagle River, in voting no on the bill.

It now heads to the House, where its prospects are unclear — lawmakers have just about three weeks until all legislation dies at the end of the regular session.

8 Best States For Hunting & Camping In The US

C amping is not only an opportunity to spend time in nature, admiring the magnificent scenery but also an excellent way to enjoy various types of outdoor activities.

The biggest benefit of camping is that the lifestyle fits perfectly with other hobbies. For example, you may hear about fishing or hunting – these two hobbies often require spending a long time in nature until the prey is found.

At the same time, if there are different spots for fishing, you need to look for a place for hunting in advance. Depending on the state and season, there can be some restrictions and regulations regarding where and when hunting is allowed, as well as what wildlife can and cannot be hunted.

However, there are still many areas in the United States where you can set up your camp. Plan your trip, buy a  hunting hot tent  and the necessary accessories, and go hunting!

Western states have many big game species and accessible public lands, making it difficult for states east of the Rockies to compete as top hunting destinations. But Wisconsin also has millions of acres of land, with about 30 percent of the state's northern third being public lands. Add to this large numbers of deers from the western states, ever-increasing flocks of turkeys, waterfowl from the Mississippi River basin to Lake Michigan, and hunting of grouse, woodcock, and pheasant, and it becomes a truly attractive destination for hunters!

Arizona is home to one of the largest elk populations in North America, giant mule deer, desert and rocky mountain sheep, desert quail, mountain lions, some of the nation's best forage species, and many others! Vast areas of national forests and service, lack of harsh winters, and superior wildlife make hunting and camping exceptional in this state.

If you dream of hunting in the Arctic, Alaska is the perfect spot for you.

The best time for hunting in Alaska is from August to October. One of the main reasons for this is that many animals in Alaska often travel long distances when migrating from their native habitats.

Alaska is known for its abundance of wildlife. Here, you can hunt both small and large game, such as musk ox, elk, caribou, etc. Alaska's northern location often makes it a completely different world. Whether you're an experienced or a new hunter, Alaska is worth a visit.

Nights in Alaska can be very cold, so be prepared for low temperatures.

Georgia is one of the most active hunting states, with more than 600,000 registered hunters and a hundred wildlife management areas. So whether you're looking for a spot to camp or hunt, you can easily find interesting sites in Georgia.

The state is home to large numbers of white-tailed deer. Turkeys, boars, black bears, and even alligators are found here. As you can see, the choice of potential hunting trophies is quite wide.

The best season for hunting in Georgia is from September to January.

Another popular hunting state is Montana. As the fourth largest state in the US, Montana has a truly vast area to explore and hunt.

A wide variety of flora and fauna can be found here, as well as beautiful mountain scenery.

The best time to hunt in Montana is from August to November.

Here, you can hunt black bears, elk, deer, antelope, wolf, and even bison.

Bird hunting is also possible in Montana. If you're looking for a place to set up a hunting tent and enjoy your hobby, Montana is the perfect spot.

Texas, like Georgia, is located in the southern part of the United States, so visiting these regions provides an opportunity to hunt rare animals.

In addition to white-tailed deer, mule deer, pheasant, and wild boar, you can hunt alligator, nilgai, elk, and cougars.

Hunting in the cold northern states during the fall and winter usually requires more equipment, skill, and preparation since the process may involve spending many hours in the wild searching for prey. This way, the warm Texas climate is especially suitable for camping for novice hunters.

Colorado is one of the most popular hunting states. Here, you can try your luck at deer hunting while enjoying the beautiful scenery for which the state is famous.

The eastern part of Colorado is represented by plains, forests, and canyons, while the western part of the state is occupied by the Rocky Mountains.

Colorado's diverse wildlife means you can hunt not only deer but also whitetail deer, antelope, mountain goats, black bears, and many other animals.

From quail hunting in the Flint Hills of eastern Kansas to the giant quail roaming the plains in the western part of the state, Kansas has a well-deserved reputation as a hunter's dream destination.

Home to spectacular whitetail and mule deer, Kansas is a great state for those looking for the biggest deer of their lives. In addition, the Cheyenne Bottoms in Kansas are known as some of the best waterfowl habitats in the Central Flyway, making the state one of the top regions for hunting.

Final Thoughts

There are so many areas and states for hunting & camping in the US that you can always find an interesting place to hunt.

Due to the different climatic zones, a variety of species can be found, making hunting an attractive hobby for many enthusiasts.

We've only considered a few states suitable for hunting and camping. However, these regions are some of the most popular thanks to the wide variety of game species and populations available for hunting. Lonely Plan-it: A fishing trip to Alaska

For many Alaska visitors, the chance to drop a line in the briny depths of the ocean, or cast a fly rod upon a rushing river, is the reason they’ve traveled north – and for good reason. There is nothing quite like fresh fish – caught amid the stunning scenery of Alaska – consumed over a dinner table filled with tales of the day itself.

Alaska’s commercial fishing industry is its second-largest economic generator, with a wide variety of species found across the state. From mid-April to August, saltwater fishing vessels of varying sizes and shapes take to the sea and net or line-catch salmon, halibut, cod and other species for markets around the world. Sport fishing is also a huge business in Alaska, including the Arctic and Northwest regions, where species like Arctic char are considered a fly-fisher’s dream for their fight on a line.

For these reasons, you’ll need to consider the seasons, types of fishing and the most accessible locations for your fishing holiday. In a state with 3,000 rivers, three million lakes, and over 6,000 miles of coastline, the toughest part is deciding where to go.

What are the regulations for fishing in Alaska?

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game is the state’s overseeing agency for all things sport fishing, and it tightly controls where, when, and what species you can catch. Dividing the state into three regions (Southcentral, Interior, and Southeastern) the agency provides up-to-date listings of open and closed areas, and forecasts for salmon runs each spring, when many anglers are making  plans for fishing trips.

All nonresidents aged 16 and older must purchase and carry a current fishing license , available either online or at retail outlets in just about every city. Additionally, those wanting to fish for king salmon must secure a stamp indicating this intention, which is added to your license. It must be noted here that the ADF&G does not take fishing without a license lightly: officers are constantly patrolling shorelines and salt waterways – and fines for non-licensed fishers are hefty.

Know your halibut from chinook

It behooves the fishing visitor to have an idea of what type of fish they’d like to catch while in Alaska. Those looking for salmon have the choice to fish in either saltwater near Whittier, Seward, Valdez or Homer and nearby environs; or in the rivers and streams flowing near these communities, but also in Anchorage and along the Southwest regional areas like Dillingham and Katmai National Park.

Know that the farther away from the road system one goes, the more expensive fishing will get, especially if you need a float plane to reach a river. Alaska's waters house five species of salmon: chum, sockeye, pink, chinook and coho. Each spawn at different times of year, beginning with chinook (also known as king salmon) in late spring.

Other freshwater fish include Arctic char, grayling and trout – the latter usually fished in September and October.

Saltwater species are abundant and accessible in any harbor community, but halibut are predominant in the community of Homer at the tip of the Kenai Peninsula . In fact it is known as the “halibut capital of the world” with fish hauled in here reaching 200 pounds in weight.

Best destinations for a DIY fishing trip

  • Cast a line into the river for world-class salmon fishing on the Kenai River near Cooper Landing .
  • Head out to deeper waters of Cook Inlet from Homer to fish for halibut.
  • Show up to Ship Creek in Anchorage and rent the entire kit to fish like a local.
  • Fly-fish the sparkling waters of the Little Tok River near the community of Tok, in the Yukon-Charley Rivers Preserve.
  • Try the family-friendly Bering Sea Crab Fisherman's Tour in Ketchikan for a look at the dangerous deep-sea crab industry.

Top tips for fishing in Juneau

Located along Alaska’s Inside Passage, Juneau is a great landing spot for Southeast fishers wanting to haul in a halibut or salmon. Charters depart from both downtown docks and Auke Bay about 15 miles from the city center.

Where to stay: Spend the night downtown at the Silverbow Inn and take in the charm of Alaska’s capital city.

Where to eat: For fresh seafood and local atmosphere, dine at the Hangar on the Wharf and watch floatplanes and ships come in and out.

What to expect in Seward

A popular destination for both cruise ship and independent travelers, Seward is also a hotspot for Anchorage residents looking for a weekend getaway. The calm waters of Resurrection Bay glean salmon, halibut, rockfish and cod and are great places for youngsters to learn the art of saltwater fishing.

Where to stay: Harbor 360 hotel sits right at the small boat harbor and offers a complimentary breakfast and access to downtown Seward activities, including fishing charters.

Where to eat: The Cookery in downtown Seward is small but its menu of fresh seafood and produce packs a delicious punch.

Visiting Valdez

This scenic Prince William Sound community lives hard by the sea, with daily salmon, halibut, and rockfish charters departing from its small boat harbor. Visit during the pink salmon run in early July and see the commercial purse seiners hauling up enormous nets of delicious fish.

Where to stay: Totem Hotel and Suites is a good option and a short distance from the downtown docks.

Where to eat: Try The Fat Mermaid for locally-sourced seafood right along the main street of Valdez and within walking distance to activities.

Remote fishing experiences in Alaska

If a remote fishing experience is on your bucket list and within budget, these lodges provide a truly immersive once-in-a-lifetime Alaska fishing trip.

Waterfall Resort

Located on scenic Prince of Wales Island in Southeast Alaska, this homey lodge is reached via a 45-minute floatplane ride from Ketchikan and offers pristine scenery while fishing for salmon in the calm waterways around the island. This former salmon cannery-turned fishing lodge is a wonderful choice for groups and families.

Alaska Sportsman’s Lodge

A luxury resort located near one of the most productive sockeye salmon waterways in Alaska, the Kvichak River, this lodge is for serious fishers, with daily guided forays into the wilderness to cast a line. Want to fly fish for trout? This is the place for that as well, with large fish regularly caught and released.

Tordrillo Lodge

Want to throw in some other adventures while still finding time to fish? This hidden lodge deep in the Tordrillo Mountains just an hour floatplane ride from Anchorage is pretty much perfect, with salmon and trout fishing intermingled with heli-skiing, hiking, and rafting.

Be bear aware

Alaska’s bears frequent the same fishing rivers and streams as humans, and they always have the right of way. If you are fishing without a guide, review the Alaska Department of Fish and Game rules and guidelines for fishers , and always keep an eye out for bears, especially if fishing in the long, dusky Alaska evening hours.

What to pack for your fishing trip to Alaska

If taking a charter vessel, dress for inclement weather and a near-constant day of wetness and fish scales. Wear rubber boots, or non-slip, close-toed shoes – and bring rain gear, a warm hat and gloves.

For those heading out into the open waters of Prince William Sound or the Gulf of Alaska, consider pre-dosing with an anti-seasickness medication or wearing a behind-the-ear patch to prevent nausea during the trip. Even the most ardent sailors sometimes feel the rolling ocean swells to be too much to manage without medicine.

For river fishers, waders are a must, and non-felt wading shoes.

Don’t have gear? There’s no need to worry: most guiding outfits provide everything you need for a comfortable experience.
