Igloo maxcold voyager backpack cooler overview, things to consider before buying an igloo backpack cooler, why you should trust me, igloo backpack cooler review, what do other reviewers say, igloo maxcold voyager alternatives, my thoughts overall on the igloo voyager backpack cooler.

In the market for a backpack cooler that doesn’t cost a small fortune? How hard can it be, right? Turns out…not so easy.

In this Igloo backpack cooler review, I’m comparing the MaxCold Voyager against some of the best backpack coolers you can get so you can decide whether Igloo is the right choice for you.

Igloo MaxCold Voyager Backpack

Igloo MaxCold Voyager Backpack

Value for money icon

  • Multiple compartments make it easy to load up a picnic and your essentials like a wallet, phone, and keys
  • Of the sub-$100 coolers I tested, Igloo had the best insulation
  • There are a lot of cool features built into this bag, from elastic mesh side panels, a bottle opener, t-handles on the zippers, and an elastic bungee cord on the front
  • The multiple pocket system is great for a picnic for two and separating drinks from foods, etc. But it reduces the capacity if you’re just looking to bring drinks
  • It doesn’t look cool in my opinion

What’s better than throwing some drinks and snacks on your back and heading out into nature?

Sometimes that’s all you need to clear your mind.

And I’m the kind of person who also gets peace of mind knowing I’m carrying the best gear.

So I went out and picked up five of the most popular backpack coolers and tested them all against one another.

In this review, I’m not only looking at the Igloo MaxCold Voyager backpack cooler , but also the YETI Hopper M20 , the RTIC 20-Can , the Icemule Pro , and the Tourit Cockatoo .

There are pros, cons, and best-use cases for each. Keep reading to see my results.

Igloo backpack cooler front view

The Igloo MaxCold Voyager backpack cooler is similar to the Igloo Gizmo—the brand’s most popular backpack cooler. But the MaxCold Voyager is a step up in insulation and features.

Because it’s not much more expensive than the Gizmo, I figured I’d give it a try.

igloo maxcold voyager

We compare YETI, RTIC, Igloo, ORCA, and Pelican to see which of their 20 qt coolers is the best. The results of our insulation tests might shock you.

It can hold 30 cans, though that’s only with an ice-pack, and when I tried that, none of the drinks really got all that cold. So I would actually consider this to be more of a 20-can max if you plan on adding ice to actually get your contents cold.

Igloo has a few more premium backpack coolers available, but I wanted to add a few sub-$100 coolers to my tests to see if there was a great budget option.

Igloo MaxCold Voyager Backpack

The Igloo MaxCold Voyager offers solid value for money, and if you need a cooler backpack for an upcoming trip, it's not a bad choice. I don't see this lasting more than 5 years though, and I personally would rather get something that I know will last a decade or longer.

Igloo backpack cooler on kayak in lake

Of the backpack coolers I tested that cost less than $100, the Igloo MaxCold Voyager was the best. So if you’re not looking to spend over $100, well, you know my recommendation.

But I think the best value for money pick you can make is the Icemule Pro XL 33L . It’s water-tight, has excellent insulation, looks awesome, and has a rugged rubberized ripstop exterior.

Icemule Pro XL 33L

The Icemule Pro XL is my top pick for backpack coolers. I love the way it looks, the insulation is fantastic, and the price is right. It can hold its own against YETI despite being less than half the price.

The Icemule costs almost double what the Igloo Voyager does, but if you plan on using your backpack cooler on any nature excursions, or want something that’ll last more than 5 years, then the Icemule is a better investment.

Another important consideration is that the Igloo MaxCold Voyager had the most pockets of any backpack cooler I tested, which is fantastic if you have kids and need lots of sub-compartments to store their various knick-knacks.

Yeti Hopper M20 compared to rtic backpack and Icemule pro

Before writing this review, I tested five of the most popular backpack coolers on the market: the Igloo MaxCold Voyager , the YETI Hopper M20 , the RTIC 20-Can , the Icemule Pro XL 33L , and the Tourit Cockatoo .

RTIC Backpack Cooler Review

In this RTIC Backpack Cooler review, I compare the 20-Can Backpack to other coolers from YETI, Igloo, Icemule, and Tourit to see which one is the right for you.

For each cooler, I put 3.5 lbs of ice, sealed them, and measured the internal temperature for 40 hours.

I also had the chance to do some sort of excursion with each cooler to see what it was actually like to bring the cooler around for a day and get to know its comparative strengths and weaknesses.

how-long-does-dry-ice-last-in-a-cooler-image

Don’t risk ruining the weekend by not keeping everything cold. We’ll show you exactly how long your dry ice is going to last, plus how to boost dry ice life.

So I not only know how the Igloo MaxCold Voyager performs, but I also know how it performs in comparison to other brands.

Igloo backpack cooler portability demonstration on kayak

The Igloo MaxCold Voyager is well below $100, which is one of the main reasons I wanted to give it a try: to see if it’s a good budget-friendly option.

The only other cooler I tested near this price range was the Tourit Cockatoo , and while the Tourit is about 25% less expensive than the Igloo, you’re getting a far better value with the Igloo.

Tourit Cockatoo Cooler Backpack

The Tourit Cockatoo isn't great with insulation. It's better to think of it as a backpack with insulation rather than a cooler. If you need a lot of compartments and only need to keep a chill for six hours or so, the Tourit Cockatoo is great. But for all-day frostiness, you'll want something more robust.

I think the real question is whether you should get the extreme budget-friendly Igloo backpack cooler, or step up the investment to an Icemule Pro, which is my top value-for-money pick.

Of course, there’s the YETI Hopper M20 , but at over $300, it’s not really in the “budget-friendly” category at all. It is a great cooler, though.

YETI Hopper M20 Backpack Cooler

The Hopper M20 Backpack Soft Cooler allows you to put the day on your back — literally. This hands-free soft cooler keeps you mobile, while an ultra-strong magnet strip keeps the cold locked in and the hot air out.

I think the Igloo MaxCold Voyager is a solid value, but I’m a very active person who likes to go kayaking, hiking, and fishing, and I’m not particularly easy on my gear when I do any of that.

So when I came down to adventure-time, I felt the soft fabric shell of the Igloo and the construction just wasn’t what I needed. I’m the kind of person who is willing to pay a little extra for something I know will last a long time.

While I feel that the Igloo is a good backpack cooler, I’m not 100% confident it’s going to endure through the impact-heavy things I get into regularly.

Looking for a cooler that doesn’t cost a small fortune? We got you. This Igloo BMX 25 review tells you all you need to know before buying.

Igloo voyager backpack cooler main pocket capacity

When looking at the capacity, I like to not only measure how much a cooler can hold, but also how “efficient” the cooler is with that space. Some designs can hold several more cans than others, despite the coolers being the same size externally.

So I measure what I call the “space efficiency ratio,” which is just the liter capacity divided by the number of cans the cooler can hold with ice.

backpack cooler space efficiency compared

The Igloo MaxCold Voyager ’s space efficiency ratio rating is 1.5, which is the highest of the five backpack coolers I tested.

That basically means that compared with the external size of the cooler, the Igloo can hold the most cans. A big part of this is that the Igloo has a front pouch with a lot of room in it. You wouldn’t necessarily always use that for storing more cans—you’d probably put your food or some dry goods in that compartment

Icemule ’s space efficiency ratio rating is 0.72, which is below the average of the five coolers I tested. This is because there’s a lot of extra fabric at the top that you need to make the roll top closure work.

The Igloo MaxCold Voyager’s size is ideal for a full picnic for two, and you could probably pack a light picnic for four in there.

Here are the actual capacities for all the coolers tested:

Backpack cooler actual capacity in liters

The Icemule has the most liquid capacity, with the YETI coming in second. If you’re looking to haul a picnic for six, I would recommend one of those two backpack coolers as those are the only ones that have that kind of capacity.

The Igloo came in fourth (out of five) in my insulation tests. Check out the graph below:

Backpack Cooler Ice Retention and Insulating Ability Graph 1

I ran my test for 40 hours, at which point all the coolers had been sitting at room temperature (except the YETI).

The Igloo held its contents below 40 degrees (the food-safe temperature limit) for 19 hours.

How long does the Igloo backpack cooler hold ice for?

My Igloo MaxCold Voyager held ice for 16 hours.

question icon

And if it’s frosty beers you’re after, the Igloo kept cans at or below 50 degrees for 25 hours, compared to the YETI’s 33-hour performance.

The YETI Hopper M20 was the king of insulation in my tests, but you can see that the Icemule wasn’t far behind at all, which really surprised me.

The Igloo and the Tourit were definitely the laggards in this area, but they’re also the only options under $100. Still, the Igloo outperformed the Tourit, despite the fact that the Tourit is smaller (smaller capacity usually means better ice retention when using an equal amount of ice).

Want to keep ice cream frozen in a cooler only using things you have already? This guide has all the DIY tips and tricks to keep that ice cream frozen.

Igloo voyager backpack cooler on a kayak in lake

Durability is the biggest factor weighing on why I recommend the Icemule over the Igloo .

It’s not that the Igloo isn’t durable—there’s nothing happening to it yet that suggests it’s not well-made.

But when I look at the triple layer rubberized ripstop fabric of the Icemule, plus the stitching in the seams, it’s clear that it’s much better built than the Igloo Voyager.

I should also say that the Igloo Voyager is much better built than the Tourit Cockatoo, so if you’re firm on sticking below $100 for your backpack cooler, then get the Igloo for sure.

How to Lock Your Cooler

Nothing ruins a trip faster than losing your important cargo. In this guide, you’ll learn how to lock your cooler, plus you can find our favorite cooler locks.

I think the Igloo will last long enough for you to get a good deal for your money. But there’s nothing that blows me away about the materials and construction.

If you’re willing to venture above $100, then the quality is disproportionately better. That means while the Icemule is about double the cost of the Igloo, I think you’re getting much more than double the value in terms of durability, comfort, storage space, and adventure-readiness.

Portability

Igloo backpack cooler straps for portability

It doesn’t get much more portable than a backpack cooler, and all the options I tested were great—especially when compared to hard coolers.

The Igloo backpack cooler is pretty comfortable when fully loaded—there’s a nice pad for the lower back that can help out if you have some strange oblong objects poking out backwards.

The most comfortable backpack cooler is the YETI Hopper M20 , which I felt balanced the weight on your back exceptionally well. The RTIC 20-Can pack and the Tourit Cockatoo didn’t impress me much with their comfort or ease of carrying longer distances.

I’d say the Igloo was somewhere in the middle for comfort.

Igloo backpack cooler side pocket features

Igloo loaded the MaxCold Voyager with features: it has two mesh pockets at the sides for storing water bottles or whatever else you want. It also has a front pocket, a main compartment, and a top compartment for easy access to your keys, wallet, and phone.

There’s a nifty metal bottle opener attached to one strap, and there’s some nylon loops on the other strap if you want to attach a carabiner.

Overall, I think Igloo does the best job—even when compared with the expensive YETI Hopper—with thinking of small ways to make the backpack more useful on a camping trip or a hike.

Some reviewers were dismayed that this backpack doesn’t carry a full 30 cans with ice—just 30 cans without ice. Who wants that?

I think a better expectation is 20 cans with ice, plus places to store your phone, keys, and wallet. In that regard, the Igloo has the most pockets of any cooler I tested, so it has the most versatile storage space. The higher end coolers usually just have one main compartment—the Igloo is much more of an insulated backpack, rather than a cooler you can put on your back.

YETI Hopper M20

Yeti Hopper M20 backpack cooler on fishing trip

The YETI Hopper M20 is my top pick of all the backpack coolers because it keeps the weight distributed evenly across your back and makes treacherous hiking conditions a little safer.

I tend to get into treacherous hiking conditions often so that’s pretty important to me.

I also like that the YETI has a high density shell that’s stiffer and more abrasion resistant than the rubberized RTIC and Icemule . I think that’ll contribute to the longevity of the cooler. But it does cost over $300, which is a lot for a backpack cooler.

Still, if you’re looking for the best of the best, the YETI Hopper M20 is the best upgrade backpack cooler you can get in my opinion.

YETI Hopper M20 Review

In this YETI Hopper M20 review, I’ve tested YETI’s backpack cooler against several of the best competitors to find out if it’s really worth the price?

Icemule Pro XL 33L Backpack Cooler

model wearing Icemule pro on back

The Icemule Pro is still a big step up in cost from the Igloo , but I think it’s worthy of consideration.

I can see the Icemule Pro lasting for the rest of your life, and I just don’t see the Igloo backpack cooler doing the same. Igloo uses a standard fabric and the internal waterproof lining is pretty thin.

While the Icemule Pro is about double the cost of the Igloo, I think it goes beyond double the value and longevity. Plus the insulation is fantastic.

What I Like

  • I like the three separate compartments—it acts more like an insulated backpack than a cooler you can carry on your back.
  • Of the sub-$100 coolers I tested, Igloo had the best insulation.
  • Igloo put a lot of thought into their features: elastic mesh sides, metal bottle opener, t-handles on the zippers, elastic bungee on the front, and nylon webbing on left strap.

What I Don’t Like

  • Because the Igloo is built like an insulated backpack rather than a cooler, there are some gaps in the insulation that cause it to underperform compared to other brands (though it still was the best sub-$100 backpack cooler for insulation in my tests).
  • Compared to the other backpack coolers I got, I think it’s the worst looking.

Who is the Igloo Voyager for?

The Igloo Voyager is for you if you’re looking to spend less than $100 and you want something that can hold a chill for a few hours—if you only ever need to keep cold temperatures until lunch and you’re not doing anything high-impact, then the Igloo MaxCold Voyager will get the job done.

The Verdict

The Igloo MaxCold Voyager is my top budget-friendly backpack cooler (under $100).

It outperformed the Tourit Cockatoo in just about every way (except I think the Tourit looks cooler, but that’s really not that big of a deal).

While the Igloo is my budget pick, I think it’s really worth considering the Icemule Pro.

The Icemule Pro does cost about double what the Igloo costs, and you’re breaking that $100 level, but the value you get is well worth it in my opinion.

The waterproof lining in the Igloo is pretty thin, and I can see something catching it and tearing it fairly easily—then it’s game over for the cooler.

But the Icemule Pro is a tough beast, it’s waterproof, and it’s made with rubberized ripstop fabric that is really hard to destroy. Plus the insulation is close to YETI level, but at a far lower cost.

The YETI Hopper M20 is the best of the best, but it costs over five times more than the Igloo, so it seems a little ridiculous to recommend it here. Still, if quality is your utmost consideration, then the YETI is the way.

If you get the Igloo MaxCold Voyager, I think you’ll be happy with your purchase. And I also think you’ll be buying another backpack cooler within the next five years. The Icemule might sting a bit more on the upfront costs, but I bet it would be the last backpack cooler you’ll need.

Can I put ice in my Igloo backpack cooler?

Yes, you can and should put ice in your Igloo backpack cooler. I recommend two to three pounds of ice to keep everything cold while still leaving plenty of room for your snackies.

How long does the Igloo backpack cooler keep cold?

My Igloo backpack cooler kept its contents below room temperature for 31 hours. It held contents below 40 degrees (food-safe temp) for 19 hours, and below 50 degrees (chilled drinks) for 25 hours.

Is the Igloo backpack cooler waterproof?

No, the Igloo MaxCold Voyager isn’t waterproof, nor is it air-tight.

Igloo MaxCold Cooler Review

Updated by Brandon F. on August 8, 2022

One of Igloo’s most popular lineups of coolers is their MaxCold Series .  This series comes in both hard-sided and soft-sided models of varying sizes and configurations.  As the name suggests, Igloo has attempted to maximize ice life with these coolers.  This is accomplished through a variety of features including Ultratherm insulation , Cool Riser Technology , and more.  And despite these more advanced features, Igloo still strives to make its ice chests affordable .

We will break down the various hard-sided and soft-sided MaxCold models below.  But first, here are a few of our top choices for the best Igloo MaxCold Coolers.

Igloo Maxcold 40-100 Qt Commercially Insulated Coolers

Igloo MaxCold Coolers

Igloo MaxCold Cooler Review

Buy on Amazon

The MaxCold Cooler series has gone through some changes over the years.  Similar to many of Igloo’s other hard-sided cooler lineups, the number of sizes to choose from has gone down some.  Currently, you can select between a 40 quart (wheeled), 52 quart (wheeled) , 100 quart, and 165 quart .   There are quite a few other MaxCold sizes that have been made in the past (70, 120, etc.) but they won’t have the updates and facelift of the newer models.

The current selection, while a bit limited, does hit most of the typically desired size ranges.   You have a small cooler, medium cooler, large cooler, and giant cooler (per our internal storage volume definitions).  And for good measure, you also have some wheeled options thrown in.  And the largest size, the 165-quart, is a sort of “hybrid” Igloo cooler in that it combines MaxCold technology with Igloo Contour technology.

Igloo MaxCold Cooler Features

Igloo MaxCold Coolers aren’t going to overwhelm you with the laundry list of features that they have like some other premium cooler brands that we have tested.  But they do have some necessary features in place to help bump up ice performance.  In addition, they also have a handful of features that are dedicated to usability.  This makes these coolers good for a large range of target audiences.

Igloo MaxCold Cooler Review

One of our favorite things about these coolers (specifically the larger sizes) is the latches .  Typically on budget coolers , you will find sub-par latches.  These latches not only can be on the weak side but also don’t always provide a good “bite”.  This can result in air being able to escape outside of the cooler more easily.

The latches on the MaxCold products more closely resemble what you would find on a much more expensive premium cooler .

Igloo MaxCold Cooler Review

Another nifty feature located on the larger examples is the hatch lid .  This allows you to access stored items inside the cooler body without having to completely open the lid.  This is helpful both from a convenience perspective as well as helping to reduce how much warm air can get into the cooled items when opened.

Igloo MaxCold Cooler Review

Drain plugs come standard on all sizes (even the smallest!) and are situated to be very easy to access and open/close.  It is worth mentioning that the smaller sizes won’t come with a threaded drain plug (it is a triple snap, leak-resistant model).  This isn’t a huge deal but some people do prefer the threaded (which comes in the larger models).

Igloo MaxCold Cooler Review

For transportation, you will have a couple of different options depending on which model you choose.  The 100-quart and 165-quart models will come with side-carrying handles that can be rotated nearly 180 degrees .  These are pretty standard for larger ice chests.  And, due to the large weight that they may have to support, they are reinforced for extra durability.  This is important because the last thing you want to happen is the strap or handle to break while you are carrying a full load of drinks and ice!

Igloo MaxCold Cooler Review

As for the smaller models, you will have wheels and a locking telescoping handle (52-quart model) or reinforced swing-up handles (40-quart model) that make pulling the ice chest a breeze.  In addition to this, there are also molded-in side handles for those times when you would prefer to carry or lift them with your hands.

The MaxCold 40 Roller cooler will have the wheels situated on long ways while the MaxCold Quantum 52 will have them centered.

Specific sizes will also come with some features exclusive to just them.  For instance, the 52-Quart Quantum model comes with an internal shelf-ledge that provides a great storage spot for condiments.  Furthermore, the 165-Quart MaxCold Contour model has a unique contour shape that helps to minimize how much storage space it takes up while also being able to handle.

Now that we have gone over a few of the more popular convenience-related features, let’s focus on the features that help to prolong ice life .

Igloo MaxCold Cooler Review

The most significant component that gives MaxCold its name is the Ultratherm insulation you will find in all body pieces.  The insulation isn’t the thickest in the industry ( it is around 1.5” thick ) but it is quite efficient at locking in heat.  In addition, you will find Cool Riser Technology on most MaxCold models.  This is where the body of the ice chest is elevated off of the ground thanks to lets on the corners.  This improves ice performance by getting the cold base off of the hot ground .

Igloo MaxCold Cooler Ice Life

The ultimate goal with the ice retention features discussed above is to improve cooling performance.  Depending on which size and model you go with, Igloo states that you should expect between 5 to 7 days of ice life .  These are lofty numbers considering that Igloo MaxCold Coolers don’t utilize rotomolded technology, don’t have large rubber gaskets, and don’t have super thick walls.

As always, we like to do our in-house testing and analysis.  Typically, our testing will consist of filling the cooler up with around 1/3 to ½ full of ice and leaving it out in the heat.  Next, we will occasionally open the cooler (exposing the ice to warm air).  This closely resembles what real-life use is like.

The results of our test are as follows:

Igloo MaxCold Cooler Review

As is the norm, the largest cooler tends to perform the best .  The 165-quart comes in at a pretty impressive 110 to 140 hours of ice life .  On the upper end, that is nearly 6 days !

The smaller coolers trended downward, with the smallest 40-quart cooler producing around 35 to 60 hours of potential ice life (depending on conditions).

We are pretty content with these numbers, particularly when considering the price point.  While we didn’t see quite the numbers that Igloo stated (up to 7 days), they weren’t far off.  And if we put the cooler in optimal conditions and loaded it with additional ice, getting another day of performance isn’t out of the question.

Igloo MaxCold Appearance

Igloo MaxCold Cooler Review

One of our big complaints about the previous Igloo MaxCold was in the looks department.  We found the styling to be old and bland.  Thankfully, Igloo has updated the styling to bring it to a more progressive look.  While it still doesn’t blow us away, it is certainly better than it was before.

The curves are less “bubbly” and we like the new dark blue/light blue combination look.  Our major issue is still the lack of color choices.   You are stuck with the blue color combo and, in the case of the 165-quart contour, can only work with white.

We hope that Igloo decides to expand its color choices in the future.

Igloo MaxCold Soft-Sided Coolers

Igloo MaxCold Cooler Review

The other side of the MaxCold Series includes Igloo’s soft-sided coolers .  You will find a bit more variety here than in the hard-sided lineup.  The selections include backpack coolers, roller coolers , cooler totes , and cooler bags .  And, similar to the hard-sided coolers, all of these products utilize additional insulation features to help give ice life a boost.

Also, it is worth mentioning that there have been quite a few updates to this line as well.  Previous models that may still be floating around include MaxCold Workman’s Meal to Go Cooler Bags, MaxCold duffels, and more.

Typically, cooler manufacturers will stick to the number of cans that you can store rather than quarts for soft-sided coolers.  Using that metric, these soft-sided products range from 16 cans up to 36 cans .  And the totes and backpacks aren’t measured in any sort of metric.  Converting to quarts, you can expect to have around 10 to 30 quarts of total storage volume in the cooler bags, 5 quarts of total storage volume in the cooler totes, and 1 0 quarts of total storage volume in the cooler backpack.

This is a decent range of sizes and should accommodate most people’s needs when it comes to storage space.

Igloo MaxCold Soft-Sided Coolers Features

Since each product within the MaxCold Soft-Sided Cooler lineup is unique, there will be specific features relative to specific models.  However, some general specifications have been applied across the board.  We will go over a few of those first.

Igloo MaxCold Cooler Review

First, all the bags come with an antimicrobial layer .  This helps to keep microorganisms from growing on the bag.  This is also combined with the quality inner liner to create leak-proof bags .  This can be a lifesaver when you are using ice (which will melt and turn into water).  Nothing is more frustrating than carrying a wet cooler bag!  Another way to alleviate this is with ice packs .

In addition, all MaxCold products come equipped with a layer of Ultratherm insulation .  This layer is increased by 25% in thickness , resulting in a thicker layer of foam.  This gives a nice boost to the potential ice life of these products.

Igloo MaxCold Cooler Review

As for individual features, you will find plenty of helpful external storage options on many of the cooler bags.  For instance, the MaxCold Gripper 16 comes with a really helpful top cooler section that is accessed by a completely different zipper than the base.

Igloo MaxCold Cooler Review

The MaxCold Cool Fusion 36 has multiple storage pockets on the sides and front.  The front is a zippered bag while the sides are easy-access mesh pockets .   This gives you plenty of room for the items that you want to keep separated from the ice and/or things that don’t need to be kept cold.

Igloo MaxCold Cooler Review

Finally, the MaxCold Backpack Cooler comes with an expandable front stash pocket as well as 3 different mesh side pockets for added versatility.

The only models that are somewhat lacking in additional storage are the cooler totes .  These are more or less large bags.  That being said, they will come with 2 separate main compartments that allow you to better organize the items that you want to carry.

Igloo MaxCold Cooler Review

As for mobility, you will find that all Igloo MaxCold Soft-Sided Coolers are very easy to transport .  All come with easy-grip handles and many come with multiple carrying options .  For instance, the Igloo MaxCold   Grippers come with both an overhead padded carrying handle as well as an adjustable shoulder strap .  This means that you can easily carry them either with your hands or hanging off your shoulder.

As you might expect, the backpack cooler is also very easy to transport.  The adjustable, padded comfort straps are very well-designed and easy to adjust as necessary.

Igloo MaxCold Cooler Review

Finally, the wheeled Cool Fusion 36 takes advantage of a pair of rolling wheels and a locking, telescoping handle to move it around.

These were just some of the helpful features that are included.  Others can include molded top access compartments, removable hard plastic liners, and more.

Igloo MaxCold Soft-Sided Coolers Ice Life

While you won’t enjoy the ice life of MaxCold Hard-Sided Coolers, these soft-sided coolers still take advantage of their cold-retaining features to maximum performance.  Our testing includes filling up with ice about 1/3 of the way, leaving in the heat, and occasionally opening the container.

It is worth mentioning that soft-sided coolers are much more sensitive to variables than hard-sided coolers.  Because of this, your specific application will have a much greater effect on the ice life you will enjoy.  We also consider that in our graphs by giving the coolers a larger potential range.

The results of our testing are below:

Igloo MaxCold Cooler Review

We have mixed feelings about the results.  For a short lunch excursion, these soft-sided coolers will do fine.   But for anything more than a few hours, only the largest grippers will be able to handle it.

The totes, in particular, have very limited ice life.  We don’t recommend using ice with them at all.  Instead, stick to ice packs .  The reason for their struggle is the lack of thick insulation and a very exposed top that allows cold air to escape rather quickly.

For the models that did utilize the thicker MaxCold foam combined with Ultratherm insulation, the boost compared to a “normal” Igloo cooler was noticeable .  But it still won’t be able to compete with some of the premium (and much more expensive) soft-sided coolers on the market.

Igloo MaxCold Soft-Sided Coolers Appearance

The updated MaxCold styling has been out for longer than it has for the hard-sided coolers.  We think the facelift was a great choice and think that these soft-sided products look quite nice.

However, the only color choice for nearly every product is the standard black and silver with a blue accent .  It is a good look but we wish that there would be more colors to choose from.

Igloo MaxCold Cooler Review

The only product that offers multiple color choices is the cooler totes.  And even those come in just two: a patterned blue and a patterned red.

Pricing is always a major concern with any cooler.  And seeing how premium coolers can easily run into the hundreds of dollars, having some more affordable options is a necessity.  Let’s face it: not everybody can afford to spend that kind of money on a cooler!

Igloo coolers have always been quite affordable.  And while the MaxCold Cooler series does utilize some extra features that may drive up the cost, the asking price is still very reasonable and should be within most people’s budgets.

You won’t get the extreme toughness, industry-leading ice life, an overwhelming list of features like you will with some of the more expensive coolers, but most people simply don’t need all of that extra stuff and a solid Igloo Cooler will do.

Igloo MaxCold Cooler vs. Yeti

When comparing the Igloo MaxCold Cooler to Yeti coolers , there are definite pros and cons to each.

Igloo is a recognizable brand that has been around for many years.  They offer quality products at very reasonable prices and also provide excellent customer support in the rare event of a quality mishap.

Their MaxCold coolers “ bump it up a notch ” and have longer ice life thanks to thicker Ultratherm insulation and additional layers of material.

However, they are a noticeable step down from Yeti in terms of quality, performance, and durability.   These coolers aren’t designed to handle grizzly bears or easily keep ice for a week at a time (outside of the largest sizes creeping up there).

Yeti is also a very r ecognizable brand .  But instead of their attractive price points, they are known for their incredible build quality and ice performance.

And, as you might expect, this comes at a very high asking price .

But when you buy a Yeti , you are buying something that will handle just about anything that you or Mother Nature can throw at it.  It is an investment that should last many years.

So which is better between Igloo MaxCold and Yeti?

If you are on a tight budget and simply need something for a day or two max of ice life, then go with the MaxCold .  But if you are wanting something tougher with better performance (and have the deep pockets to support it), then Yeti is a clear step above.

Igloo Maxcold 40-100 Qt Commercially Insulated Coolers

Buy on Amazon

Pros :  Good ice life for the price, easy access to items, nice selection of sizes, quite mobile

Cons :  weak handles, limited color choices, features:  ultratherm insulation, threaded drain plug, reinforced swinging handles, tie-down loop, snap-fit latch, cool riser technology, quick-access hatch.

Igloo MaxCold Coolers are one of the larger offerings from Igloo, being available in a variety of shapes and sizes as well as wheeled and non-wheeled configurations.  They come with MaxCold Ultratherm insulation on both the body as well as the lid, which helps to keep cold much longer than conventional coolers.

Other features such as a quick open hatch in larger sizes, reinforced swing handles, threaded drain plugs, and stain/odor resistant liners mean this item has a lot to offer.  It is available in the unique MaxCold blue and sizes of 40, 50, 70, 100, 120, and 165 quart for non-wheeled and 40, 50, 52, and 70 for wheeled (however some of these sizes have recently been discontinued).  All models are made of plastic with some metal hardware.

Insulation Ability –

These insulate noticeably better than the normal igloo coolers.  The extra effective insulation shows.  The big improvement is that it also comes installed in the lid, which can be a common area that is overlooked when putting insulation in a cooler.  In larger sizes, the quick access hatch lid means that you can get in and get your items easily and without having to open the entire lid.  We also like the Cooler Riser technology that elevates the body off of the warm ground. The larger sizes can keep ice for around 5 to 6 days and for the smaller sizes you can expect 3 to 4 days of performance, making these a great choice for a half-week vacation or extended weekend at the beach or lake.

Mobility and Durability –

The ice boxes are thick enough to be able to be thrown around without too much concern.  The main weak point is the lid hinge and handles.  The side handles tend to break when under extreme load and there are many reports of the lid hatch coming undone after relatively short periods, especially in the 100+ quart sizes.  All sizes come with side handles and the rolling variety comes with extendable handles that can be used to roll it around.

As for features, you won’t be blown away by the list but all the must-haves are there.  They include optional quick-access hatch, cup holders, and wheeled configurations.

Visual Appeal –

The unique Max Cold blue identifies that these coolers are, in fact, Max Cold.  Beyond that, there isn’t a lot to them other than some subtle aesthetic lines on the outside.  We are glad that more sizes have undergone the recent visual facelift but there could still be some improvement.  Also, some other color choices are floating around but they are few and far between.

We do like the styling of the update.  There just needs to be more colors to choose from!

Cost –

Being an Igloo, you can expect prices to be reasonable.  That being said, there can be quite a range, depending on the size and availability.  However, you will typically find the Maxcold coolers falling into the budget range and occasionally creeping up into the lower end of the intermediate range.  All in all, this is a very fair asking price for what you get.

Overall Rating –

The Igloo MaxCold Cooler Review earns a 3.5 out of 5 cooler rating.  The Max Cold cooler line does earn its name as it does a much better job of maximizing cold than most conventional coolers at this price range.  The extra insulation shines and with so many size options there is sure to be one that works for you.

Unfortunately, the handles and hinges can have issues, however.  And the color options need to be expanded.  Beyond that, there are no major complaints, especially if you can find one on the lower end of the price spectrum.  On the higher end, you can get into other high-performance offerings that might be a better choice.

Igloo MaxCold Soft-Sided Cooler Review

Igloo Playmate GRIPPER Maxcold 16 Black

Pros : Extremely mobile, Lots of storage options, Good product selection, Attractive Pricing

Cons : smaller sizes are still limited on ice life, lack of color choices.

This is our Igloo MaxCold Soft-Sided Cooler Review.  These coolers take inspiration from the popular hard-sided lineup and incorporate their special features: thicker foam, Ultratherm technology, leak-proof liner, and more.  They also incorporate multiple storage pockets as well as some other unique accessories.

They come in a variety of sizes and shapes including totes, duffels, cooler bags, backpacks, and more.  But you will typically find storage size to range between 10 and 30 quarts.

While these soft-sided coolers will perform better than most other Igloo soft-sided coolers, they will still have some limitations (particularly in the smaller sizes).  Most of your applications revolve around picnics or lunch outings that will require 12 hours or less of ice life.  The exception to this is in the larger sizes which can creep up to around a day of ice life.  The performance comes thanks to the 25% thicker insulation and utilization of Ultratherm technology.

These are extremely mobile and quite comfortable to carry.  Many models will come with multiple carrying options including an overhead padded handle as well as a padded shoulder strap.  In addition, they are designed to be sleek while still allowing for plenty of storage space.

And speaking of storage space, you will find ample additional pockets (both zippered and mesh) on the outside for those items that you don’t want to keep cold.  When you add in a leak-proof liner, antimicrobial outside, and various other model-specific features, you have a great overall package.

The one issue we have come across is that the zippers can sometimes be a bit finicky.  This includes getting stuck or jammed.  While Igloo seems to have corrected this problem, for the most part, it is still something to consider.

We like the styling of the Igloo MaxCold Soft-Sided coolers.  The combination of the black, silver, and blue finish has become the recognizable color combo for MaxCold products.  And the way that Igloo can incorporate into the external pockets is very well done.

However, similar to the hard-sided coolers, color choices are very lacking.  The cooler totes are the only models that have multiple color choices, and they only come in red and blue!

The asking price across all products is very competitive.  For the price, you get a reliable and comfortable product that should last for several years without major issues.  While ice life can be a bit lacking, we can’t be too picky when the price is this good.

The Igloo Maxcold Soft-Sided Cooler is a solid lineup of entry-level coolers.  These products will enjoy a nice boost in lice life thanks to their thicker foam core and they will also have many of the simple features you want.  Plus, they are extremely mobile.  But they do lack some in overall ice life and the color choices need to be expanded.  But overall, these are a safe choice for those on a budget.

A History of Moscow in 13 Dishes

Featured city guides.

igloo maxcold voyager

The spiraling 246m high Evolution Tower is located on plots 2-3 of Moscow-City high-rise business district on Presnenskaya Embankment of Moscow river. New multi-function center occupies the territory of 2.5ha in area, 2ha of which is a landscaped terraced civic plaza, the integral part of the new city piazza, the central open public space of Moscow-City business downtown.

ivic plaza includes 10m high ceremonial stairs (leading from embankment and pedestrian Bagration Bridge to the higher terraced levels) as well as landscaped areas with green lawns, trees, water features, travellators and feature lightboxes.

Evolution Tower

Location: Moscow, Russia

Typology: High-Rise, Office, Mixed-Use

Years: Construction 2011-2014

Status: Built

Height: 246m

Design team: GORPROJECT  (2011-2015),

RMJM Scotland Ltd

(original concept 2005-2007)

Under the piazza levels the 2-storey retail mall connects the Evolution Tower with metro station and pedestrian bridge over Moscow river, thus integrating the new development into the large Moscow-City district, the Europe's newest and most ambitious high-rise cluster (7 of 10 highest European skyscrapers ae located here), housing over 4 million square meters of office and retail areas with associated transport and engineering infrastructure.

The Evolution Gallery mall houses food court and 6,000m2 family entertainment and educational center for various children activities (the first center of that kind in Moscow).

The 82,000m2 office tower has 52 levels rotated 3 degrees each floor with overall twist reaching 156 degrees clockwise. With world’s largest innovative cold-bent glazing the tower façade provides seamless floating reflection that rotates the panoramas of Moscow skyline vertically, where the reflected clouds moving up enhance the dynamic visual impact of the twisted tower, an unprecedented optical effect in the world architecture.  The Crown with supporting steel structure made of two twisted arches provides the helipad at the very top as well as the open observation roof decks at Levels 51-52 featuring the best panoramas of Moscow riverside with views towards the historical center.

From the very beginning the developer and architects have set an ambitious task to create a recognizable and symbolic tower, the new icon of contemporary Moscow.  The sculptural DNA-shaped twisting tower symbolizes the evolution spiral with the white façade ribbon wrapping over the roof in a form of 90-degree twisted infinity symbol, which speaks of philosophical concept of evolution and celebrates the development of human civilization. From spiraling onion domes of St. Basil to the iconic Tatlin Tower concept the Russian architecture was obsessed with idea of spiral. The simple and innovative design was based on principles of twisting square-shaped floor plates with vertical structural RC frame supported by a central core and 8 columns with continuous beams and 4 spiraling columns at the corners.

The proposed structural scheme with cantilevered continuous RC beams and cantilevered floor slabs  picking up the overhangs from the twisted floor plates appeared to be simple, efficient and economical. The complex sculptural tower façade envelope was built using the innovative cold-bent glazing with flat double glazed units cold-formed in 3D within the aluminum frame under its own weight to avoid stepping in geometry. This approach appeared to be both more energy-efficient and more cost-efficient solution in comparison to the stepped curtain wall units previously applied in some twisted unitized facades.

The multifunctional architectural glass by Guardian significantly reduces the solar gain whilst providing the double glazed unit thermal performance equal to standard triple glazed unit normally used in Moscow to withstand harsh winter conditions. The use of innovative TWIN elevators by ThyssenKrupp saved 2 shafts within the core (10 TWINs instead of 12 double-deckers in the original concept) and contributed to the overall project sustainability with lesser power consumption per passenger. Other sustainable design features include green roofs over the retail mall and integrated coil floor heating under landscaped civic piazza levels using the return water in winter to melt the snow and ice for the safety of pedestrians. The reinforced concrete formwork by PERI, including self-climbing ACS formwork specially designed for the twisting corner columns, allowed to achieve the impressive speed of RC frame construction of 6 days per floor due to perfect site logistics by Renaissance Construction as main contractor.

All innovative design solutions and optimizations secured the delivery of this fairly unique skyscraper within the project plan and almost within the budget of the standard ‘benchmark’ high-rise building. This turned out to be a major achievement of the design and construction teams.

The organic twisting silhouette dominates on its background of extruded glass towers greatly contributing into the overall composition of the high-rise Moscow-City cluster. The development delivered a significant open public space on the landscaped roof of the retail mall, thus providing the perfect mix of business uses with public and social activities of the civic plaza and the mall with its food court and core family entertainment function. The synergy of that mix with large underground car-park complemented by the direct link to the metro station and pedestrian bridge as means of main public transportation secured the successful project completion with the recent entire tower acquisition. Bold shape and timeless aesthetics as added values brought by its unique architecture materialized in a commercial success of this project with the tower being fully acquired for corporate headquarters even in the context of oversupply in the Moscow office market. The outstanding quality of architecture and its fine detailing, state of the art building services and communications of Class A office Tower together with the highest level of transport accessibility  (direct access to metro station from the lobby, large car-parking, proximity to boat pier and helipads) make this property very attractive for tenants and visitors. The beautiful riverside panoramas from offices are complemented by green roof and water features of the large 2ha terraced civic piazza as the main recreational outdoor space with direct link from the office tower lobby.

The highest quality of façade cladding, glazing, vertical transportation and MEP equipment from leading European and international suppliers provided the truly Class-A office environment with the luxury of minimalist spirit in the architecture of the new landmark on the Moscow skyline. Even before its completion the sculptural spiral of Evolution Tower, more often appearing in commercials, posters and magazines, became a new icon for modern Moscow as the symbol of its business ambitions and fast development. The Evolution Tower also became the monument to the courage of its developer (Snegiri Group) and investors, who built the great deal of trust with architects, engineers and contractors by investing their efforts and funds in a challenging adventure of designing and building the unique and innovative skyscraper for the capital of Russia.
