India tourist visa from the embassy

This article is a complete guide to obtaining India tourist visa from the embassy or consulate. You can learn everything about India tourist visa types, requirements, eligibility, documents needed, fee and application procedure.

Indian missions around the world issue India tourist visas for those that require a visa to enter India. Most nationalities are eligible to apply for an e-Visa or Visa on Arrival. But there are a handful of nationalities that are not eligible. These nationalities must apply for a tourist visa at their nearest Indian embassy or consulate.

Nationalities that are eligible for India e-Visa or India Visa on Arrival are also eligible to apply for an Indian tourist visa from their nearest Indian embassy or consulate. There may be occasions where a tourist visa from the embassy is a better choice than an India e-Visa or India Visa on Arrival . For example, US nationals can get a 10-year tourist visa from the embassy vs an Indian e-Visa which is only valid for 5 years. So a tourist visa from the embassy is a better choice in this case.

There are three types of tourist visa categories T-1, T-2 and T-3. T-1 is for tourists. T-2 is for tour groups and T-3 is for cruise passengers.

How to apply for Indian tourist visa from the embassy?

The India tourist visa application is a two-step process.

STEP 1: Online Application

Step 2: appointment.

The first step in the Indian tourist visa application process is to fill out an online application on the India visa portal .

If you are a family or group, each person must complete one online application form. There is no family application. Similarly, each person must schedule one separate visa appointment for document submission.

In the online application, you must select the Indian embassy/consulate where you plan to apply for your visa.

After filling out the application, you must print and sign it.

If the Indian embassy/consulate did not outsource the visa application to a visa application center, then you can walk into the embassy/consulate any day to pay the fee and submit your visa application.

If the Indian embassy/consulate has outsourced the visa process to a visa application center, then you will have to go to the visa application center’s website and schedule an appointment. You may be able to pay the visa fee while scheduling the appointment.

On the day of the appointment, you must submit your completed and signed application form, photographs and original passport. You must also pay the fee if you haven’t while scheduling the appointment.

If there is no visa application center near you, you can also send your completed application and documents to the visa application center by mail.

Word of caution on India tourist visa fake websites

If you search on the internet, you will see that there are many Indian visa websites posing as “official websites”. There is ONLY one OFFICIAL website for Indian tourist visas. The rest are all fake. The OFFICIAL website is below.

How to receive the approved India tourist visa?

If applied directly at an Indian embassy or consulate: At the time of submitting your documents at the embassy, the visa officer will tell you when to come back to pick up your passport. You will simply have to go back on that day to pick up your passport with your India visa.

How to get a visa for India: Rules for UK applications explained with new measures to ease ‘stressful’ backlog

The uk has been excluded from the list of countries eligible for e-visas for travel to india. hundreds of holidays were disrupted as travellers struggled to secure an in-person visa appointment.

indian visas british tourists wait times new measures

British tourists must apply for a visa to visit India , and are not eligible for e-visas, a rule that has caused disruption to hundreds of holidays.

However, the Indian High Commission has announced new “interim measures” to speed up applications, including a service that will collect relevant papers from your doorstep and return them once processed – for a fee.

Before the pandemic , the UK was among tens of countries from which most holidaymakers could use an e-visa to travel to India . The system was fairly straightforward and similar to applying for a US Esta.

It was reinstated for 156 countries when India fully reopened to tourism in February , but the UK was left off the list of eligible nationalities. The Indian High Commission confirmed on 7 October, following weeks of confusion, that Britons would need to attend in-person appointments and interviews to secure a visa.

In October, visa applicants reported difficulties securing a slot at the the nine processing centres across the UK, which were booked up well into November. Travellers who were able to book an appointment spoke of long waits at the centres and people being sent away due to small mistakes on their paperwork.

UK tour operators have cancelled many trips, and refunded customers. Some have stopped selling trips to India for the rest of the year.

Ashley Quint, holiday designer at Berkhamsted travel agency TravelTime World, told i that two clients had found the process “difficult” and “stressful”.

Last month, Aito, the specialist travel association, estimated that around 1,500 of its members’ bookings were affected.

Why can’t British tourists use an e-visa?

It is not clear why the UK was been excluded from the list of eligible countries; Canada has also been left off the list.

Theories include an administrative oversight with the end of the Brexit transition period having occurred between India suspending and reinstating its e-visas (all current EU member states are on the eligible list), or as a reciprocal measure given that it is an arduous process for Indian citizens to apply for a UK visa.

For now, there is no suggestion as to if, and when, e-visas might be reinstated for Britons.

How to get a visa for travel to India

You should make an appointment in good time ahead of your trip to India. These can be booked online .

There is a three-step process: After applying online, submit your documents at an Indian Visa Application Centre, then collect the documents from the centre or receive them via post. You can check the status of an application online .

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) warns that you should make sure that you have the right visa and that it is valid for the purpose and duration of your stay.

Under the entry requirements on the India advice page, it adds: “If you enter India on the wrong visa, you could be detained on arrival and you may be deported and blacklisted, meaning that you cannot enter India again.”

There is further information available through the High Commission of India in London and the Government of India’s Bureau of Immigration .

The FCDO advises that overstaying your visa is an offence in India and to ensure you leave the country before your visa has expired.

Visa applicants of Pakistani origin who have dual nationality must apply for an Indian visa on their Pakistani passport.

The new measures to speed up applications

Indian High Commissioner, Vikram K Doralswami, said in a video posted on Twitter last week that the number of visa applications being handled for travel to India from the UK had doubled to 40,000 from 20,000 in a month as a result of changes made to the booking system in October.

The High Commissioner has previously said that the visa process had been “difficult”.

New visa processing centres have opened in Glasgow and Marylebone, London (the latter on 1 November) to help reduce waiting times.

A new “visa at your doorstep” service is also being introduced under which travellers can pay a fee to have their papers collected for processing and returned to them after processing.

To assist with this, the service provider will also offer a service at a small cost to have documents checked online before they are taken to be processed.

There will also be a form filling service for those that need extra help in completing the paperwork.

The Indian High Commission has yet to release details on how to apply and pay for these services.

Visas for group tours travelling to the same destination in India and on the same flights, usually with a tour operator, are available again as of 1 November.

What to do if you’re due to travel to India

If you are planning to travel to India in the next couple of months, then be sure to apply for a visa as soon as possible.

Travel agents have reported customers having to rely on appointments on the day before they travel.

Ashley Quint from TravelTime World told i : “ I have been trying to help a couple of people who have been caught up in this mess.

“They were panicking because the only date they could get for their appointment was the day before they were travelling and found the process difficult.”

“I believe they got their visa in the end, and were able to travel, but it was really to the wire and stressful.”

If travelling with a tour operator, or booking through a travel agent, contact them for the latest advice.

Following a surge in the demand for travel to the UK from India, Britain has decided to bring back its standard 15-day visa process. British High Commissioner to India Alex Ellis, in a video message which started with "Namaste", said: "We are on track to get back to processing India to UK visa applications within our standard of 15 days."

We are on track to get back to processing 🇮🇳 to 🇬ðŸ‡ç #visa applications within our standard of 15 days. 👉 Student numbers â¬Æ️ by 89% since last year. 👉 Skilled workers visas bring processed faster 👉 Focus on improving visitor visa processing times. A long way come, more to go. pic.twitter.com/cjX26mRxs8 — Alex Ellis (@AlexWEllis) October 18, 2022

He urged prospective applicants to apply for visa three months in advance. He also said that applicants apply under the priority and super priority services at various centres.

Update for 🇮🇳 students 🎓 travelling to the UK 🇬ðŸ‡ç has now made Priority and Super Priority visas available for students. Meanwhile, travellers from the United Kingdom are having a difficult time securing visas for India. Most missions across the world have had huge backlogs leading to massive delays after the Covid-19 pandemic shut the world down.

“We understand that there has been difficulty in getting these appointments. We are doing our best to ameliorate the situation,” Ellis said last week.

“Here is what we are doing: First, we are ensuring that more bookings are released on our online booking service and that these appointment modules are not being misused, which has been the case recently. Second, we are ramping up capacity in partnership with our service provider,” he said. Published By: Abhishek Chakraborty Published On: Oct 18, 2022 --- ENDS ---

Advance travel planning and early visa application are important. If you plan to apply for a nonimmigrant visa to come to the United States as a temporary visitor, please review the current wait time for an interview using the tool below. Not all visa applications can be completed on the day of the interview; please read the information below for more details .

Check the estimated wait time for a nonimmigrant visa interview appointment at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

Note: Please check the individual Embassy or Consulate website to determine if your case is eligible for a waiver of the in-person interview.

Applicants scheduling visa appointments in a location different from their place of residence should check post websites for nonresident wait times.

Global Visa Wait Times

Wait Time for Interview

The estimated wait time to receive a nonimmigrant visa interview appointment at a U.S. embassy or consulate and is based on workload and staffing and can vary from week to week. The information provided is an estimate and does not guarantee the availability of an appointment.

Wait Time for Interview Waiver

Wait times for applicants eligible for Interview Waiver are applicable only for locations where applicants schedule appointments to submit their passport and any required documents to a U.S. embassy or consulate. The wait time estimate does not account for the time required for a consular officer to adjudicate the application nor mailing time of passports or other documents. Refer to the website of the Embassy or Consulate Visa Section where you will apply to determine your eligibility for Interview Waiver and for instructions for submitting a nonimmigrant visa application. Note that applicants must be a national or resident of the country where they are applying to be eligible to apply via Interview Waiver.

Qualifications for an Expedited Interview Appointment

Consular sections overseas may be able to expedite your interview date if there is an urgent, unforeseen situation such as a funeral, medical emergency, or school start date. The process to request an expedited nonimmigrant visa interview varies by location. You should refer to the instructions on the website of the Embassy or Consulate Visa Section  where you will interview, or on their online appointment scheduling site. You will need to provide proof of the need for an earlier appointment.

In all cases : You must first submit the online visa application form (DS-160), pay the application fee, and schedule the first available interview appointment. Only at this point will a consular section consider your request for an expedited appointment.

Note: Travel for the purpose of attending weddings and graduation ceremonies, assisting pregnant relatives, participating in an annual business/academic/professional conference, or enjoying last-minute tourism does not qualify for expedited appointments. For such travel, please schedule a regular visa appointment well in advance.

These estimates do not include time required for administrative processing, which may affect some applications. When administrative processing is required, the timing will vary based on individual circumstances of each case.

There are only two possible outcomes for U.S. visa applications. The consular officer will either issue or refuse the visa. If a visa applicant has not established that he or she is eligible for a visa, the consular officer must refuse that application. However, some refused visa applications may require further administrative processing. When administrative processing is required, the consular officer will inform the applicant at the end of the interview. The duration of the administrative processing will vary based on the individual circumstances of each case. At the conclusion of the administrative processing period, the consular officer might conclude that an applicant is now qualified for the visa for which he or she applied. The officer may also conclude that the applicant remains ineligible for a visa. Visa applicants are reminded to apply early for their visas, well in advance of the anticipated travel date.

Important Notice:   Except in cases of emergency travel (i.e. serious illnesses, injuries, or deaths in your immediate family), before making inquiries about status of administrative processing, applicants should wait at least 180 days from the date of interview or submission of supplemental documents, whichever is later.

About Visa Processing Wait Times – Nonimmigrant Visa Applicants

Information about nonimmigrant visa wait times for interviews and visa processing time frames are shown on this website, as well as on U.S. Embassy and Consulate websites worldwide. It should be noted that the “Wait Times for a Nonimmigrant Visa to be Processed” information by country does not include time required for administrative processing. Processing wait time also does not include the time required to return the passport to applicants, by either courier services or the local mail system.

In addition, it is important to thoroughly review all information on the specific  Embassy or Consulate Visa Section website  for local procedures and instructions, such as how to make an interview appointment. Embassy and Consulate websites will also explain any additional procedures for students, exchange visitors and those persons who need an earlier visa interview appointment.

About Wait Times

UK Visa Processing Times (Latest from UKVI)

  • Anne Morris
  • 26 February 2024

processing times

IN THIS SECTION

The length of time it takes for your application to be processed can be an important factor in deciding when to apply and when to make travel arrangements. But UK visa processing times vary considerably, depending on factors such as the type of visa being applied for, the country or Embassy where the application is made and the applicant’s own individual circumstances and eligibility.

Visa applicants are advised to take guidance on the current processing timescales for their specific type of application.

UK visa processing times

UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) is the Home Office department responsible for the UK’s visa system.

The processing date is typically counted from when the applicant has attended their visa appointment and submitted their biometric information, or as soon as ID checks have been completed and the application is submitted using UKVI’s visa processing app.

Processing times for in-country applications are as follows (correct as at the date of publishing):

Priority & fast-track services

Priority service and super priority services for applications being made from outside the UK are available for work, business and family visa routes.

Where available, priority processing allows applicants for certain work and settlement routes such as the Skilled Worker visa to pay an additional fee for fast-tracked processing. Priority processing provides a decision within 5 working days, while super-priority is for a decision by the end of the next working day

Priority processing is only available to certain applicants, notably those proving their identity by attending an appointment at a UKVCAS centre or those using the ‘UK Immigration: ID Check’ app . If available to you, you will be notified when making your application and given the option to purchase faster processing.

The fees for priority and super-priority processing are as follows:

Priority processing times for Certificate of Sponsorship requests & Changes of Circumstances

Priority processing remains available to A’ rated sponsors for fast-tracked CoS allocation and other Change of Circumstances requests, for a fee of £200 per application. The priority requests are generally processed within 5 working days.

What is the difference between UKVCAS and Home Office processing?

One factor that may affect the UK visa processing time is whether the application has to be made through UKVCAS .

UKVCAS (UK Visa and Citizenship Application Service) was introduced in November 2018 to handle certain UK visa, settlement and citizenship applications made be applicants already in the UK.

You will be advised when making your application if you must go through UKVCAS in order for your application to be processed.

How might the time of year and other factors affect your UK visa processing time?

There are other factors that may affect the processing time of your UK visa application. These include:

Caseload Summer is generally the busiest time for UKVI, and other factors such as Home Office priorities may impact processing.

Where you apply from The country that you apply for your UK visa from may affect the processing time for several reasons, including the relationship and arrangements between the UK and your country, the administrative systems within each country, current conditions within either country, endorsing documents from your country or finding their equivalent in the UK, whether that country is part of the EEA and so on.

It is always advised to check with the UK embassy or consulate in your country for any such issues that could lead to visa processing delays.

Insufficient or incorrect information If your application includes incorrect information or the documentation you supply is insufficient, the processing time may be longer than expected if UKVI suspend processing to request further information from you in order to make a decision.

The best way to avoid this is to check your application thoroughly and ensure that you have all the necessary documentation to hand before you apply.

What are the different types of UK visa applications?

The type of UK visa that you apply for will be the main deciding factor in how long it takes to process your UK visa application. The UK visa that you choose will depend on your reason for visiting the UK and how long you wish to stay.

Work in the UK

There are many types of short-term and long-term work visas including:

  • Skilled worker visa
  • Temporary worker visas
  • Global Business Mobility visas
  • Domestic workers in a private household visas
  • Sportsperson visa
  • Graduate route
  • High Potential Individual visa
  • Global Talent visa
  • Scale up visa
  • Innovator Founder visa

Each type of visa will carry its own eligibility, conditions and application requirements.

The Skilled Worker visa , for instance, is open to non-UK residents with a job offer from a licensed sponsor for skilled employment in the UK.

The processing time for the Skilled Worker visa is generally no longer than 3 weeks once the applicant has attended their appointment.

Holiday, family visit or business trip

The Standard Visitor visa is generally suitable for tourism, holidays, visiting and to receive short-term medical treatment. It replaces:

  • Business visitor and prospective entrepreneur visas
  • Family visitor visa
  • Child visitor visa
  • Sports and entertainer visitor visas
  • Private medical treatment visitor visa
  • Approved destination status visa
  • General visitor visa

Under the standard visitor visa, you can usually stay in the UK for up to 6 months.

Your application for a Standard Visitor visa should be made no earlier than 3 months before you intend to enter the UK, and it will generally take no more than 3 weeks for the visa application to be processed and a decision made after your appointment.

Under current processing times, visitor visa applications from outside the UK are taking six weeks instead of the usual three.

Studying in the UK

Should you wish to study in the UK, there are 3 visas available for this purpose, depending on your individual situation:

  • A short-term study visa is suitable for a 6 month stay in the UK to attend a course. For students over 16 who wish to attend an English language course, it may be possible to use a Short-term study visa for a stay of up to 11 months.
  • A general study visa is suitable for a longer course of study in the UK as long as the student has a confirmed place on a course and is sponsored by a licensed university or college.
  • 4 to 17 years old wishing to study at an independent school should apply for a child student visa .

Apply for the appropriate student visa no earlier than 3 months before you intend to enter the UK. Once you have attended your appointment, it will generally take no more than 3 weeks to receive a decision.

Entrepreneurs & investors

The primary route for people coming to the UK to set up or run a business is the Innovator Founder visa.  While no up-front investment is required under this route, there are many eligibility criteria that will need to be satisfied by both the applicant and the business. Endorsement will also be required before the visa application can be made.

Processing for business visas can take longer than other categories due to the complexity of the application documentation and evidence. Again, the earliest you can apply is 3 months before you travel.

Joining family in the UK

The Family visa will generally allow you to join certain family members who already live in the UK if you wish to remain in the country for more than 6 months, such as spouses. You may also consider a dependant visa .

If the visa application is made from outside the UK, the processing time will generally take up to 24 weeks.

To get married in the UK

If you intend to visit the UK to get married, you should generally apply for a Marriage Visitor visa . This visa is also suitable for civil partnership ceremonies in the UK.

This visa doesn’t allow you to remain or settle in the UK after the marriage or civil partnership ceremony.

Processing, once an appointment has been attended, should ordinarily take no more than 3 weeks.

Travelling through the UK

There are two types of Transit visa . If you will be passing through UK border control and staying in the UK no more than 48 hours, then you should apply for a Visitor in Transit visa. If you will not pass through UK border control, then you should apply for a Direct Airside Transit visa.

If you will be staying in the UK for longer than 48 hours, it will be necessary to apply for a Standard Visitor visa.

UK Tourist Visa from India [2024 Ultimate Guide]

Do indians need a visa to enter the uk.

Yes, Indian citizens do require a visa to enter the UK for any purpose, including tourism.

Unlike some other countries that offer visa-on-arrival or visa-free entry to Indian citizens, the UK mandates a visa for all categories of travel.

This makes it essential to apply well in advance of your planned travel date and ensure that all documentation and requirements are meticulously met.

What Is The UK Tourist Visa?

The UK tourist visa, more formally known as the Standard Visitor Visa, is designed for individuals who wish to travel to the United Kingdom for leisure, tourism, to visit friends or family, or even for short business visits.

This visa type is not suitable for those who intend to work, study for an extended period, or stay permanently in the UK.

Typically, the Standard Visitor Visa is valid for up to 6 months.

There are also options for longer-term visitor visas, which last 2, 5, or 10 years, but you can only stay for a maximum of 6 months during any given year.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for a UK tourist visa, an applicant must meet several conditions:

  • Intention to Leave : The applicant must demonstrate a clear intention to exit the UK at the end of their visit. This often involves proving ties to their home country, like a job or family responsibilities.
  • Financial Solvency : The applicant must show that they have enough funds to support themselves—and any dependents—during the stay without relying on public funds.
  • Work Restrictions : The applicant should not have the intent to take up employment, produce goods, or provide services while in the UK.
  • Marital Status : The applicant must not intend to marry or register a civil partnership in the UK during their visit.

What Are The Required Documents?

Acquiring a UK tourist visa requires various documents, including:

  • Valid Passport : Must be valid for the entire duration of your stay.
  • Proof of Accommodation : Confirmation of where you’ll be staying, whether it’s a hotel booking or a letter from a friend or family member.
  • Bank Statements : To verify you have sufficient funds for your visit.
  • Employment Letter : A letter from your employer confirming your employment status and leave of absence.
  • Travel Itinerary : A detailed plan of your activities and places you plan to visit.
  • Proof of Relationship : Required if you are visiting family or friends, to confirm your connection.
  • Travel Insurance : While not mandatory, it is highly recommended.
  • Biometric Information : Fingerprints and a digital photograph will be taken during the application process.

The Application Process

For Indian nationals applying for a UK tourist visa in 2024, the application process is generally as follows:

Step 1: Complete the Online Application

Start your application by filling out the form online on the UK government’s official website. This form will ask for details such as your personal information, previous travel history, the purpose of your visit, and other particulars relevant to your application.

Step 2: Pay the Visa Fee

After finalizing your online application, you’ll be directed to the payment page. As of 2024, the application fee for a Standard Visitor Visa is £115.

Step 3: Schedule an Appointment

Once the payment is successfully processed, you’ll have the option to schedule an appointment for biometric data collection at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) in India.

Step 4: Attend the Biometric Appointment

On the day of your appointment, head to the VAC to have your fingerprints and a digital photograph taken. This is also when you will submit your passport and any additional supporting documentation.

Step 5: Attend the Interview (if required)

Some applicants, based on their answers in the application or their background, may be required to attend a visa interview. You will be informed in advance if this step is necessary.

Step 6: Receive the Visa Decision

Generally, visa decisions are communicated within 3 weeks from the date of the biometric appointment. Upon approval, you will either receive your passport with the visa stamp via post or be notified to collect it in person from the VAC.

What Is the Standard Processing Time?

Understanding the processing time for a UK tourist visa is crucial for planning your trip effectively. While timelines can vary depending on a host of factors such as the time of year, the volume of applications, and individual case complexities, the general guidelines offer a reasonable estimate.

Standard Processing Time

For the Standard Visitor Visa for Indians applying in 2024, the usual processing time is approximately 3 weeks (15 working days) from the date of your biometric appointment at the Visa Application Centre (VAC).

This timeframe applies to straightforward cases that do not require additional scrutiny or verification.

Factors That May Affect Processing Time

  • Incomplete Documentation : Failing to submit all required documents may lead to delays or even a visa refusal.
  • High Volume Seasons : Peak travel seasons like summer or significant holidays can result in longer processing times due to increased application volumes.
  • Additional Verification : Sometimes, the UK visa authorities may require extra time to verify certain aspects of your application, like financial or employment details.
  • Interview Requirement : If you are called in for an interview, this could extend the time it takes to process your application.
  • Public Holidays : Note that public holidays can affect the processing time, as visa offices may be closed.

Expedited Services: Fast-Tracking Your Application

The UK visa services offer priority and super-priority services for an additional fee, which is particularly useful for applicants who need their visa quickly.

  • Priority Service : Aims to process your application within 5 working days. The fee of £500 is additional to the regular visa fee.
  • Super-Priority Service : Aims to process your application by the end of the next working day. This service comes with a significantly higher fee of £1000.

Remember, using these services does not guarantee visa approval; it only speeds up the processing time.

Can I Extend the UK Tourist Visa?

Typically, a Standard Visitor Visa is valid for up to 6 months. If you have a long-term Standard Visitor Visa that lasts 2, 5, or 10 years, you can still only stay for a maximum of 6 months during any given 12-month period.

Extensions are generally possible but must meet certain conditions and are not guaranteed.

Eligibility Criteria for Extension

  • Reason for Extension : You must have a valid reason for the extension that aligns with the original purpose of your visit, whether it’s tourism, visiting family, or a short business trip.
  • Funds : You must demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to support yourself for the extended period without relying on public funds.
  • Initial Visa Compliance : You must have complied with the terms of your original visa, including not working or accessing public funds.
  • Timing : Importantly, the application for extension must be made before your current visa expires. Overstaying your visa is a violation of UK immigration law and can result in a ban on returning to the UK.

Application Process

  • Form : To apply for an extension, you must complete the online form FLR (Form to Request Leave to Remain) on the UK government’s official website.
  • Fee : There is a £1000 fee for extending your UK tourist visa.
  • Documents : You’ll be required to submit the same types of supporting documents as you did for the original visa application. This includes proof of funds, travel itinerary, and any other documents that substantiate your reason for extending your stay.
  • Biometric Information : Similar to the initial application, you’ll need to provide biometric data (fingerprints and a digital photo) as part of the extension process.
  • Processing Time : The time it takes to process an extension varies, but it is generally up to 8 weeks. A £1000 super priority service is available to reduce the processing time to 1 working day.

Visa Centres in India

If you are in India and looking to apply for a tourist visa to visit the UK, there are several application centres where you can submit your documents and attend interviews. These centres are operated by VFS Global or other authorized agencies and are situated in various cities across India.

Major Locations

  • New Delhi : Shivaji Stadium Metro Station, Connaught Place
  • Mumbai : Bandra Kurla Complex
  • Bangalore : Global Tech Park, No 11 First Floor O’ Shaughnessy Road, Langford Town
  • Chennai : Fagun Towers, Ethiraj Salai
  • Hyderabad : 8-2-700, Ground floor, Srida Anushka Pride, Banjara Hills
  • Kolkata : Rene Tower, Building No. 1842, Rajdanga Main Road
  • Document verification
  • Biometric data collection
  • Visa interview (if required)

What Are The Most Common Refusal Reasons?

Tourist visas from India to the UK are generally straightforward but can sometimes be refused due to various reasons. Some common factors include:

  • Incomplete Documentation : Missing or incomplete documents can lead to immediate refusal.
  • Financial Instability : Inability to prove you can financially sustain yourself during the UK trip.
  • Unclear Purpose of Visit : If the authorities find the reason for your visit unclear or doubtful, your visa may be denied.
  • Prior Immigration Violations : Overstays, illegal entry, or working on a previous tourist visa can significantly impact the decision.
  • False or Misleading Information : Submission of fraudulent documents or incorrect details is a ground for immediate refusal.

What Happens If Your Visa Is Refused?

Being refused a UK tourist visa can be disappointing, but it’s not the end of the road. Here’s what generally happens:

  • Notification : You will receive a refusal letter detailing the reasons for the denial.
  • Appeal : Depending on the visa type and the refusal reasons, you may have the right to appeal. The appeal process can be complicated and time-consuming.
  • Reapplication : You can always reapply, but it’s crucial to address the issues that led to the initial refusal effectively.
  • Consult an Expert : Given the complexities surrounding visa refusals, consulting an immigration lawyer can help you understand your options better.
  • Impact on Future Applications : Note that a visa refusal could potentially affect future visa applications, not only to the UK but also to other countries.

What To Do Upon Landing in the UK

Once you land in the UK, there are some essential steps and checks you must go through:

  • Pass Through Immigration Control : You’ll be asked to show your passport and visa. Keep them handy.
  • Declaration : You may have to declare certain items at customs. Know the regulations beforehand.
  • Local SIM Card : Consider buying a local SIM card for easy communication.
  • Transport : Be aware of your transport options from the airport to your accommodation.
  • Register with Local Authorities : Some travelers might be required to register their arrival with the local police within seven days.

Can I Switch from a Tourist Visa to a Work Visa While in the UK?

As of 2024, individuals holding a UK Tourist Visa from India cannot usually switch to a work visa while still in the UK.

The UK Tourist Visa is specifically designated for tourism, visiting family/friends, or short-term business visits and does not provide a pathway to switch to a work visa category from within the UK.

To apply for a UK work visa, you typically need to return to India and apply from there, meeting all the necessary requirements for the work visa category.

Can I Work in the UK on a Tourist Visa?

No, you are not permitted to work in the UK on a Tourist Visa. This includes both paid and unpaid employment.

The UK Tourist Visa is strictly for leisure, tourism, or short-term non-work related activities. Working while on a tourist visa is considered a breach of visa conditions and could lead to severe consequences, including deportation and a ban on future travel to the UK.

If you wish to work in the UK, you must apply for the appropriate work visa category.

You are not required to book any travel before you apply or before a decision is made on your application.

You should allow enough time before you make a visa application. You will only receive a refund of your application fee if we have not started to process your application.

You may be able to pay for a faster decision on a visa application.

When your application processing time starts

UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) starts processing your application once you either:

UK enforces 55 per cent hike in salary requirements for sponsoring family visa to control migration

The increase in salary thresholds was announced by the uk government last year and has come into effect from thursday. british citizens and residents, including those of indian heritage, must have a minimum salary of gbp 29,000, up from gbp 18,600..

Aveek Banerjee

Individuals are now required to have a minimum annual salary of GBP 29,000, up from GBP 18,600 for someone to be sponsored to come to the UK on a family visa. By early next year, this will have increased two more times to match the Skilled Worker visa salary threshold of GBP 38,700. The UK Home Office said it marks the final measure in Sunak and Home Secretary James Cleverly's package to reduce legal migration so they don't "burden the taxpayer".

"We have reached a tipping point with mass migration. There is no simple solution or easy decision which cuts numbers to levels acceptable to the British people," said Cleverly. "I promised action and we have delivered at remarkable speed. We’ve acted to cut unsustainable numbers, to protect British workers and their wages, to ensure those bringing family to the UK do not burden taxpayers, and to build an immigration system fit for the future - and one the public can rightly have confidence in".

What does the package entail?

Instead of an immediate hike to GBP 38,700, the UK government opted for a staged process to raise salary requirements. The Home Office said the staged approach to increasing the income thresholds for the family visa gives predictability to families, enabling them to plan accordingly, whilst ensuring that anyone coming to the UK to be with their family or loved ones is supported financially.

“The income requirement, which had remained unchanged for more than a decade, helps to ensure families are self-sufficient and not relying on public funds, whilst making a positive impact on the economy. The sponsoring family member, or in combination with the applicant if they are in the UK with permission to work, must now have an income of at least GBP 29,000 earned in the UK. The requirement can be met in several ways, including through savings exclusively or in addition to a lower income,” the Home Office said.

The latest measure is part of a wider package unveiled last year, which the Home Office says will mean approximately 300,000 people arriving in the UK last year would no longer be able to. The UK has witnessed massive levels of migration that have reportedly "put pressure on public services, housing, and undercutting British workers".

The Home Office noted that the government's ambition for a high-skill and high-wage economy cannot rely on mass migration and put an emphasis on protecting British workers, encouraging investment from businesses and domestic recruitment.

Criticism from opposition

The move to reduce legal migration had been criticised by the Opposition when it was first tabled in the House of Commons in December last year. It led the government to opt for a more staged approach to the salary threshold hike, rather than an immediate hike to GBP 38,700, as previously indicated. Since the beginning of this year, several visa norms have been tightened as part of the package.

"I think the principle here is right, that if people are bringing dependents into this country as part of their family, they must be able to support them. We're increasing the salary threshold significantly, and we're going exactly as we said we were doing it – we're just doing it in two stages," Sunak said at the time.

The steps taken by the government to reduce migration included ending the ability of nearly all students to bring dependants to the UK; restricting care workers from bringing family members; increasing the minimum salary required for those arriving on the Skilled Worker visa, from GBP 26,200 to GBP 38,700; and replacing the Shortage Occupation List with a new Immigration Salary List, aimed at blocking employers from paying migrants less than UK workers in shortage occupations.
