They started a bespoke travel company that makes Asian jetsetters feel at home during holidays

Bespoke travel designer Intriq Journey is carving out a niche in the travel industry by catering to jetsetting Asians with unique experiences. CNA Luxury talks to its three founders.

Are you one of those people who starts craving for a taste of home when you travel? If that happens to you on your next trip, do not feel embarrassed to whip out that packet of instant noodles you stashed away in your suitcase. Instead, savour your comfort food with pride –and be sure to give an extra loud slurp when your other travel companions look on with envy.

After all, it is perfectly normal to hanker after something familiar when you are on the road. “When Americans travel, they sometimes want fries and burgers,” quipped Jess Yap, co-founder of bespoke travel planner Intriq Journey.

The agency, which was co-founded with Stella Fan and Lim Kok Yong, specialises in luxury travel experiences around the world that cater to Asian jetsetters. For those who are wondering, yes, that includes meal planning even in the most far-flung destinations such as Africa or Antarctica.

It can be simple, thoughtful gestures such as offering suggestions for Asian restaurants or ordering warm water for the table, but they also will not hesitate to go the extra mile, said Lim.

“After a few days on the road, you might find that even though the food you are being served is fantastic, you could still wish for a bowl of rice porridge for breakfast the next morning. We know this is something that our customers appreciate, so especially when we have small groups of travellers, we work with the kitchens to prepare some local dishes to surprise and delight them on some nights,” said Yap.

TRIPS WITH AN ‘ASIAN TWIST’

The trio, who are seasoned travel industry veterans with more than six decades of combined experience, met as colleagues at bespoke travel agency Country Holidays. In 2018, Country Holidays was acquired by international luxury tour agency Scott Dunn and they joined the latter as part of the management team.

Two years later, they decided it was time to strike it out on their own and launched Intriq Journey in early 2020 to focus on trips that have an “Asian twist” by catering to what travellers from Asia want.

“We wanted to do something different that we can call our own. We wanted to carry on the legacy of Country Holidays with a more Asian identity and to design trips and journeys that excite us,” said Yap. “We know how Asians like to travel and what makes them excited.”

For example, while travellers from Western countries may prefer longer free and easy holidays and beach getaways, Asians tend to spend their time sightseeing, Fan explained.

Itineraries also differ depending on where the travellers are from. “The activities we develop for the Chinese could be different from those we create for Singaporeans. For example, when Chinese tourists travel to Vietnam, we may avoid visiting too many culturally similar sites such as Chinese-style temples,” Fan elaborated.

They also seek to showcase unique travel experiences even in familiar Asian destinations. On trips to South Korea, instead of focusing on shopping in the Myeongdong district or checking out locales favoured by K-pop stars, the team has curated a programme featuring expert guides who will showcase the history of the three kingdoms of South Korea. Or in China, there are once-in-a-lifetime experiences such as exploring the ancient tea and horse caravan trail that even seasoned travellers may not have been to before.

TIME TO GO OFF THE BEATEN TRACK

While they are finally seeing an increased interest in overseas travel, it was no mean feat to launch their travel company just as the world was going into a widespread lockdown.

“There were two options: To either lie low or to continue to plough ahead with what we had planned. We chose the second option so that we could continue to do what we believed in,” said Yap, acknowledging that they too had not anticipated how drawn out the pandemic would be.

But the time spent on building the team, establishing relationships with their partners and keeping guests and clients engaged via webinars and other activities has paid off. Now that borders are gradually reopening, they are well positioned to reintroduce travel-starved clients to the wonders of exploring the world.

“With more guests going to Europe, we could work with growers to open chateau doors for private tastings. Even with ‘simple’ destinations like Phuket, people want to go for a longer holiday as the tests do add a bit of hassle for the trip. For instance, we just planned a trip to Phuket for a wedding proposal where we helped with the proposal event,” said Yap.

With an increased demand for trips to destinations with wide open spaces – which seems to be a post-pandemic trend – the team is also launching small group trips to destinations such as Denmark,  Saudi Arabia and eastern Turkey. These trips come with perks such as chartered flights, exclusive entrances to sites and archaeologist talks for a “hassle-free experience”.

One thing’s for sure, all three travel junkies are determined to seize the opportunity to get out when they can. While Fan still has to wait, as she is currently based in China where there are travel restrictions, both Yap and Lim, who are currently in Singapore, expressed their joy in rediscovering the world.

“Travelling can seem cumbersome with so many declarations to make but once you are out there, I really did not feel that it is scary at all,” said Lim, who has visited family in Malaysia and spent time in Thailand and the United States.

“There has not been much difference to post-pandemic travel except that it can be quieter and less crowded – which I feel is one of the biggest benefits of travel today.”

How would you describe what you do to someone you’re meeting for the very first time?

How has luxury travel evolved over the years? Is it time to redefine what it means? 

Increasingly, travellers are planning ahead and opting for nature-based and wild-life focused holidays. There is a growing craving for travel experiences that offer opportunities to bond with family and friends, and travellers now seek destinations and activities that allow them to unwind and rejuvenate.

Expedition cruising has gained compelling momentum as an adventurous way to explore remote and untouched destinations. Additionally, we’ve noticed a growing interest in space tourism .

Post-pandemic, while good accommodation and fine dining remain important, travellers now have a sense of discovery for personalised activities and unique entertainment. Sustainability and social responsibility have also become integral travel considerations. Clients are now displaying a shift towards being more health-conscious, thereby prioritising wellness experiences.

Today, there’s a thoughtful balance of opulence and authenticity where travellers are actively engaged, entertained, and connected to the destinations they visit. 

What role does responsible travel have vis-a-vis mindful consumption and sustainability?

Travel is a force for good. In the realm of luxury travel , responsible travel, mindful consumption, and sustainability play a pivotal role where responsible practices preserve cultural heritage, protect the environment, and support local economies. Travel transforms us into ambassadors for the places we visit, instilling a desire to preserve and protect these destinations for future generations. Many luxury hotels , cruise lines , and tour operators have recognised this responsibility and have started their own sustainable initiatives, aligning efforts with stakeholders. 

In Africa, several tour operators actively contribute to wildlife conservation , such as rescuing rhinos and planting trees, while also empowering local communities through hospitality academies and water well projects. In an effort to reduce the carbon footprint, we advocate walking tours and biking holidays and avoid the use of single-use plastic water bottles during our tours. We refrain from promoting activities that are not aligned with responsible travel, such as riding elephants, walking with lions, or participating in hunting safaris.

The concept of ‘transformative travel’ is gaining popularity. What does the phrase mean to you?

Transformative travel, to me, is about stepping out of one’s comfort zone. Whether it is embarking on a solo adventure for the first time or conquering a challenging feat like scaling a summit, each experience is exceptional and contributes to personal growth and a deeper understanding of oneself. 

In this context, luxury travel becomes a complementary by-product, enhancing the transformative process by providing exceptional and enriching experiences that further contribute to one’s overall adventure of self-discovery and contentment.

How has the rise of social media and influencer culture impacted the way luxury travel experiences are marketed and perceived?

On one hand, it has generated greater awareness and interest as more people learn about these opportunities through the influx of information. On the other hand, it has demystified the allure of exploration and discovery by removing the patina of exclusivity through constant exposure on social media platforms. 

Balancing the promotion of luxurious destinations while preserving the heartfelt crux of these experiences remains a crucial consideration in the evolving landscape of travel marketing and perception.

How do you envision the future of luxury travel and its potential impact on individuals and society as a whole?

Luxury travel has the potential to elevate not only the sophistication level of individuals but also society. As we indulge in luxury experiences, we develop a greater appreciation for the finer things in life and learn not to take them for granted. This heightened sense of gratitude can translate into a more mindful and fulfilled society, where people cherish the moments of joy and espouse a deeper sense of gratitude for the privileges they encounter.

When you look at the state of the world today, what is the one thing that gives you hope?

Witnessing the resilience displayed by humanity in the face of challenges brought forth by the pandemic. Despite the difficulties we’ve encountered, the world’s ability to bounce back and adapt gives me confidence that we can overcome whatever future challenges may come our way.

New face of group tours

Redefining group tours, from bespoke itineraries to group buy, home-grown travel companies intriq journey and webuy are changing the way singaporeans travel as tourism gets back on its feet..

SINGAPORE - "There is strength in numbers."

This adage has gained new relevance, with group tours experiencing a resurgence and not just among seniors.

Google Trends have shown that the volume of searches for "group tours" - especially "small group tours" - has been on an upward trend since two years ago.

But today's group tours are different. Some are powered by influencers and group buys, while others offer insider access and immersive experiences.

Group tours may differ in style, but they share a couple of similarities: They offer plenty of convenience and camaraderie - something that was gravely lacking during the pandemic.

Here are two travel companies that have emerged in recent times and do group tours differently.

Luxury travel agency

Intriq journey.

Ms Jess Yap is sitting in a restaurant, reminiscing about a trip she took to Botswana, Africa, in 2016.

"I was in the Kalahari desert camp for work," recalls the co-founder of Intriq Journey. "Each room had an open platform with mattresses and blankets. I decided to spend the night on it rather than in the room.

"It was so beautiful - the entire sky was full of stars."

Ms Yap, 49, is a seasoned travel professional with more than 25 years of experience. Her "been there, done that" list reads like an adventure manual: hiking in Pakistan, visiting a Sunday market in China's Kashgar city in the Uighur region, bungee-jumping in New Zealand and schmoozing with locals in Iran.

Her company was built on this passion for adventure. Established in January 2020 with the help of two other co-founders and former colleagues Lim Kok Yong, 40, and Stella Fan, 48, it creates bespoke itineraries as well as small group journeys that marry adventure with extravagance.

"Intriq Journey was founded just three months before the pandemic, before Covid-19 had a name. Our business was modest during those early months of inception before we suffered the heavy blow from the halt in international tourism," she says.

But she soldiered on and her three-person team has grown to 12 people, with offices in Singapore, Hong Kong and Beijing. Business has gone up 50 per cent since Singapore reopened its borders in April this year and the company is now busy with year-end requests.

Today, she is redefining group travel with Intriq Finesse, a line of curated small group tours. Whether it involves personal encounters with leaders of the New Nordic culinary movement - such as Michelin-starred chefs, farmers and brew masters in Denmark - or a sunrise picnic on Mount Nemrut in eastern Turkey, visitors can look forward to a trip brimming with one-of-a-kind experiences.

Each trip is capped at 16 guests and accompanied by a travel concierge. Prices are all-inclusive, meaning that all meals, drinks (including alcohol) and tipping are taken care of.

"At present, there is peak demand for Europe, but other exotic destinations are seeing a comeback, in addition to newly opened countries such as New Zealand and Japan," she says.

Saudi Arabia is on her personal bucket list.

"The fact that not many people have visited Saudi Arabia makes this destination truly appealing, especially for the luxury segment," she says.

"Beyond its expansive oil fields and holy Mecca, the kingdom has some of the friendliest and most unpretentious locals as well as diverse, ancient landscapes, Unesco world heritage sites and one of the oldest cities in the Arabian Peninsula.

"Al Ula is a grander Petra, but without the tourist crowds."

The company caters to a largely Asian clientele because these globetrotters come with their own set of preferences and quirks.

"Most Asians do not like to spend so much time on the beach. You can take them to a Michelin-starred restaurant, but at the end of the day, they still crave comfort foods like noodle soup and porridge. They also want to see more things in a shorter period of time."

By creating these journeys, Ms Yap hopes to broaden their horizons by allowing them to discover not just other cultures, but also themselves. "I believe that going off the beaten path helps to create opportunities for authentic, immersive engagement with the communities," she says.

"You will learn invaluable lessons by interacting with the locals. You will also start to see and question things with a more 'worldly' perspective."

Travel group buy

"Travel to Europe at bargain-basement prices? What's the catch?"

This is one of the many questions bombarding chief executive and co-founder of e-commerce platform Webuy, Mr Vincent Xue, 40, when he tells customers about his company's latest venture. This allows travellers to purchase a one-for-one tour package to Switzerland, Italy and France for a nifty price of $3,999, among other things.

It works out to about $2,000 a person for flights, eight nights of hotel accommodation, sightseeing and meals.

But group buy, which typically involves people living in the same housing estate purchasing items in bulk to enjoy discounts, is a powerful thing. The pandemic has accelerated this trend, which was already gaining traction among Singaporeans.

Since Webuy was established in August 2019 by Mr Xue, along with two other co-founders Michelle Tan, 28, and Jesper Low, 32, it has grown into the country's largest group buy platform. In March, the company acquired its biggest rival in Indonesia, Chilibeli, for an undisclosed amount of money.

The company now has more than 1,000 group buy leaders - he calls them micro-influencers - and 500,000 customers across Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia.

The company started out with group buys for groceries and food, but began offering group buy travel packages in Singapore when the borders gradually reopened late last year.

All one has to do is download and install the Webuy app and start shopping.

Response has so far been overwhelming, according to him. The first trip that was taken via Webuy was to Switzerland in December 2021.

"The travellers were initially sceptical as it was going at $3,888 for seven nights, but trusted us because they regularly shopped on our platform.

"After going on the tour, they were quite impressed by the quality of the trip. They started to recommend the trips to more buyers from their community group. Hence, we are able to quickly form more travel groups through positive word of mouth," he says.

He recounts that it took only two days for one person to gather 18 of her friends and family for a seven-night holiday in Turkey several months ago. They each paid $1,788.

Webuy currently offers affordable tour packages to multiple countries, from Finland to the Maldives, as well as buy-one-get-one-free deals.

In addition to providing flights, hotels, meals and sightseeing at an all-inclusive price, the company is able to customise any aspect of its tour, including meals. This works well for travellers if they can meet the minimum required group size of 15 people.

"When tour group members don't know one another, it is difficult to align travel styles. But if customers travel in a group with people they know, they can tell us what they want and we can arrange it for them," he says.

Also, an expert guide will accompany each group and liaise with land operators.

Mr Xue plans to expand Webuy's offerings. He says: "We'd like to include corporate travel as well as free-and-easy holidays to cater to different travel styles. Customers will also be able to purchase a cruise holiday one day too."
