Fiat Freemont e Dodge Journey são praticamente o mesmo carro e já não estão no mercado há pelo menos 4 anos. E qual a diferença entre eles? São bons carros? Neste texto vou falar um pouco sobre a trajetória brasileira destes dois modelos.

A história dos dois carros conta uma pequena parte de uma mudança na indústria automotiva americana. É que o projeto original foi concebido em 2008 pela Dodge, quando ela ainda era uma marca do grupo Chrysler, o terceiro maior no mercado norte-americano.

A Fiat queria uma fatia de mercado nos Estados Unidos semelhante à de concorrentes como GM e Volkswagen e a compra da Chrysler foi a alternativa escolhida. Em 2009 a Fiat comprou uma participação majoritária e em 2014 comprou o restante das ações, tornando-se a única dona. Nesse meio todo estava o Dodge Journey.

O Journey foi o primeiro modelo que rendeu frutos nesta negociação. Na prática a Fiat tomou conta da fábrica da Dodge em Toluca (México) e adaptou o projeto para vendê-lo também com sua marca. Isso é chamado na indústria automotiva de “rebadge” (leia aqui sobre isso) .

Para a Fiat foi um grande negócio, o Freemont foi seu primeiro SUV no mercado brasileiro, quando a marca não tinha qualquer projeto nessa categoria. Para escrever este texto consultei também o acervo do jornal O Globo . A Fiat importava 500 unidades mensais do veículo e até 2015 vendeu todas com certa facilidade. Depois disso, as vendas começaram a cair.

Motor do PT Cruiser

Aqui a primeira diferença na linha brasileira: o Dodge tinha motor 2.7 que rendia 185cv (e uma mais potente, 3.6 V6, com foco no mercado dos EUA), o Fiat recebeu motor 2.4, de 172cv.

Para esta configuração a Fiat usou o motor 2.4 que equipava o finado Chrysler PT Cruiser (saiu de linha em 2010). No exterior o Dodge tinha também a versão 2.4.

O Freemont chegou ao mercado brasileiro em 2011, mas o Dodge Journey já estava aqui desde 2008, nas poucas concessionárias Dodge que existiam no país. Além do Brasil, o Fiat Freemont foi vendido na China, Europa e Austrália.

Com o Freemont a Fiat supria a falta de um SUV na linha. O carro ficou em linha até 2016, quando começou a desaparecer das lojas. O motivo: retração nas vendas e a partida do grupo da Fiat para um novo desafio, uma nova fábrica em Pernambuco para produzir a Toro e o Jeep Renegade.

A Jeep é outra marca que a Fiat pegou no pacote quando comprou a Chrysler. E foi a marca escolhida pelos italianos para ser implantada por aqui. Com isso o Freemont foi deixado de lado também para não concorrer com o Renegade.

O Dodge Journey sobreviveu um pouquinho mais por aqui. O último registrado no Denatran é modelo 2018, na versão 3.6. Aqui mais história: o Journey marcou a despedida da Dodge pela segunda vez do mercado nacional. Se despediu custando cerca de R$ 150 mil (cotação da época).

Na versão da Fiat o carro teve pouca mudança visual nos 5 anos em que foi vendido aqui. Mas houve uma mudança mecânica e é bom ficar atento ao comprar um usado: os primeiros que chegaram aqui tinham câmbio Chrysler automático de 4 marchas apenas. Fazia o carro consumir mais e ter um rendimento sofrível. Em 2013 a Fiat colocou uma caixa de marchas automática de 6 velocidades. Também nesse ano o carro ganhou central multimídia de 8,4 polegadas, um luxo para a época.

Já o da Dodge teve alterações visuais na grade dianteira e na lanterna traseira, que passou a ter LEDs em 2011. Em 2014 começou a ser vendida também uma versão com tração integral. Journey e Freemont são carros espaçosos com versões de 7 lugares, algo que não é muito fácil encontrar atualmente.

É fácil manter?

O preço atual destes carros chama a atenção no mercado de usados. Os mais antigos podem ser encontrados na cada dos R$ 40 mil e há carros com boa conservação entre R$ 50 e R$ 60 mil. Como em toda negociação com usados, ressalto a importância de uma análise minuciosa para a compra. Chame um mecânico de confiança, faça um laudo cautelar.

Um ponto a ser observado é que ambos têm apenas versões movidas à gasolina. O rendimento do motor na versão da Fiat, saindo da concessionária, era algo entre 7 km/l na cidade e 11 km/l na estrada. No caso do Dodge, com o motorzão V6, essa medição ficava entre 6 km/l na cidade e 7,4 km/l na estrada. Esses dados são das aferições divulgadas na época do lançamento.

Ambos os veículos são robustos e têm motores confiáveis que rodaram por anos agradando os norte-americanos. Porém, gastam bem e a ausência de uma opção flex só piora isso. A manutenção não é barata e agora requer um mecânico de confiança: a Dodge não existe mais no Brasil e a Fiat não trabalha mais com esse motor. Portanto, nem todas as peças de ambas são facilmente encontradas.

Na questão conforto é elogiado por quem dirige, principalmente pelo espaço e os vários compartimentos internos, o que revela que o projeto original era para agradar mesmo o público norte-americano. O ponto negativo é o tamanho do veículo, o que o torna pouco prático na cidade.

Segundo informações de 2020 da antiga FCA (hoje Stellantis) foram fabricados 1,1 milhão de Journey e Freemont entre 2008 e 2020.

Dodge Journey becomes Fiat Freemont; first Fiat-branded Chrysler Group vehicle

Named to invoke a spirit of freedom, the Fiat Freemont is a Dodge Journey adapted to the Italian market. There are, in fact, few changes as the convenience features that please American buyers will find favor in Italy as well. The versatile seating, naturally, translates well into Italian, as does the touchscreen infotainment system. Fiat notes that the Freemont has 20 storage compartments, some as large as a city car's trunk.

Fiat was compelled, of course, to give the Freemont a grille that fits the Fiat family, and Fiat being Italian, the suspension was retuned for "efficient alignment with European roads." According to Fiat, "Adjustments have been made to various parts of the suspension design, including stiffening the suspension mountings, improving the front suspension geometry to reduce the roll angle and adjusting the suspension and shock absorber calibration for the optimum combination of comfort and handling which is in line with European standards."

An even more significant change, however, is the choice of engines. Initially the Fiat Freemont will be available with 140-horse and 170-horse versions of the 2.0-liter MultiJet 2 diesel engines with a manual gearbox and front wheel drive. The Freemont will follow up those Fiat-sourced powertrains with all-wheel drive versions powered by the 170-hp 2.0-liter MultiJet 2 and Chrysler's new Pentastar 3.6-liter V-6 engines, both with automatic gearboxes, "to ensure driving comfort and safety at the same time."

Both diesel engines are rated at 258 lb-ft of torque, with the 170-horse version spreading that level of torque from 1750 rpm and up to 2500 rpm while the 140-horse engine's torque drops off at 2000 rpm. Broad torque bands or not, neither is a ball of fire by American standards. The 170-horse Fiat Freemont takes 11 seconds to get to 62 mph (100 km/h) but soldiers on to an eventual top speed of 120 mph. The 140 horsepower Freemont takes a whole 12.3 seconds to get to 62 mph, and if one is sufficiently patient will arrive at a 110 mph top speed.

The Fiat Freemont will be offered in two trim levels, the Freemont and Freemont Urban. The Freemont trim comes with a full 7-seats configuration, with automatic triple-zone climate control, radio/CD/MP3 with 4.3" touch-screen, trip computer and steering wheel audio controls, 17" alloy wheels, fog lights, cruise control, keyless entry/go, child boosters and an anti-theft alarm. The Urban trim level adds Bluetooth, automatic lights, leather steering wheel and gear knob, rear parking sensors, roof rails, a six-way power driver's seat with adjustable lumbar support, folding electric rear-view mirrors, tinted rear windows and an electrochromatic inside rearview mirror.

Fiat didn't announce the price for the Fiat Jour- ah, Freemont, so we can't compare it to the outgoing Fiat Ulysse minivan. However, like the U.S.-bound Dodge Journeys (and the Dodge-branded Journeys previously sold in Europe), all Freemonts will be built in the same factory in Mexico that produces the new Fiat 500, making a peculiar kind of symmetry in the emerging Fiat empire.

Where is HFM (Hands Free module) located on Journey/Freemont?

Hello. I got a problem, with my Freemont 2012, bluetooth and voice command. I press the "buttons" on the uconnect, and they just grey out, but nothing happens. Can't access phone settings also.

I already let the negative cable of the battery unplugged for about 12 hours, without solving it.

Than I took it to a dealer, but they didn't solve, they actually did nothing. They just upgraded the software and reseted it. So I will need to take it to another dealer (300km away).

So, reading thru several forums, the problem is probably the HFM module. Maybe just a problem with the connections, and unplugging and plugging again may solve.

I already checked behind the glove compartment and it is not there. I also looked bellow the panel at drivers side, and coundn't see it.

Does anyone know where is it really located?

08 - Electrical/8E - Electronic Control Modules/MODULE, Hands Free/Description DESCRIPTION

The Hands Free Module (HFM) (3) (also known as the Bluetooth™ module) is found in vehicles equipped with the optional Uconnect® Hands-Free System. This module is located beneath the instrument panel and above the steering column. The HFM hardware and circuitry is contained and protected within a molded black plastic housing that has two integral mounts (2) and an integral locating pin (1). The HFM is positioned to a stamped metal steering column mounting bracket by the locating pin, then secured to the bracket by two screws.

The HFM has three integral connector receptacles that are oriented toward the dash panel when it is installed in the vehicle. The two largest receptacles (5 and 6) connect the HFM to the vehicle electrical system through dedicated take outs and connectors of the instrument panel wire harness. The smallest connector (4) accepts a Universal Serial Bus (USB) cable connector that connects the HFM to the Radio Receiver Module (RRM) (also known as the radio or the head unit).

The internal circuitry of the HFM includes a microcontroller, flash memory and a Bluetooth™ module. The module also includes sophisticated Voice Recognition (VR) software. The HFM software is flash programmable.

The HFM cannot be adjusted or repaired and, if damaged or ineffective, the entire HFM must be replaced.

The Hands Free Module (HFM) (1) is mounted above the steering column (3) and against the dash panel (4) to the underside of the instrument panel column support bracket.

• Disconnect and isolate the negative cable from the battery.
• Remove the knee blocker from the instrument panel steering column opening. (Refer to 23 - Body/Instrument Panel/KNEEBLOCKER - Removal) .

One of the HFM mounting screws is concealed between the forward (connector) side of the module and the dash panel.

• Remove the two screws (2) that secure the Hands Free Module (HFM) (1) to the underside of the instrument panel column support bracket.
• Lower the HFM far enough to access and disconnect the three wire harness connections (5) from the module connector receptacles.

For an unrelated project, I need to remove the lower dash panel, the one covering the steering column, maybe that's the one mentioned in point 3 above?

Unfortunately I cannot follow the link (since it asks to login).

Removing the two nuts on the lower side is not enough to remove the panel, what seems to be a screw cover on the top left (a rectangle), actually isn't, so I don't know if there is some hidden screw or if it's just a matter of pulling hard enough (but I fear I'll break the panel that way).

Has your radio been serviced or has your dash been opened up for any reason? Before you disassemble the entire vehicle you might want to pull out the radio module (behind the hard buttons below the display screen) to make certain that the 2 USB connectors (one for the BT and the other for the USB connection in the console) are properly seated in their respective sockets. It is a simple 10 minute operation.

Bramfrank... from so long ago - could you tell me which of these plugs is the Bluetooth module plug? Diagnosing a parasitic battery drain issue.

It is one of the two connectors identified as #4 - and they are interchangeable, so AFAIK the only real way to tell which is which is to disconnect one of them and see if that takes out the Bluetooth - if it does, you have found the right one. Note, for the sake of being careful it is a good idea to disconnect power before removing connections from the module.  It isn't likely to hurt anything if you don't, but one never knows and these things are expensive.

I bought a used telematics module off eBay (supposedly for my 2012 Dodge Journey), installed it but it didn't rectify my no connection issue. I didn't mount it in place, could this be the reason it still doesn't connect? There is an integral locating pin on the mounting case, should I have mounted the module before testing it? I just left it hanging by the connectors while I tested if it connected or not. See item #1 in attached photo.  

Frustrating...

Is the case metal or plastic? If metal, might  be used as a ground. Obviously if plastic it shouldn’t matter...maybe your eBay unit is DOA....

buying a used electrical device online is a crap shoot. I never would myself.  Hopefully it has a warranty.

The case is plastic, I'm just wondering if this "integral locating pin" inserts into some type of switch or if it exists just to align up the module in its location.  Anyone know the answer to this?

The eBay seller has said ship the alleged DOA module back to him and will supposedly refund my return shipping and original charges.
