‘A new era in global golf’: European Tour to be renamed DP World Tour

The collective will of golf’s establishment to swat aside challenges by Saudi Arabia means the European Tour will be renamed from the start of next year. DP World, the Dubai-based logistics company, will take on title sponsorship of the tour, with prize funds to increase as a direct result. The European Tour, formed in 1972, will keep its name as an overarching corporate entity only.

Saudi Arabia’s manoeuvres in the professional game have met staunch resistance from the European and PGA Tours, who are now in strategic alliance. Greg Norman was recently confirmed as the public face of a Saudi-based series of 10 events on the Asian Tour. The Saudis have long-held aspirations of a golf super league but, as yet, have no formal buy-in from leading players.

The DP World Tour will lead to prize funds – including major championships and World Golf Championships – totalling more than $200m (£147m) for the first time. Tournaments solely sanctioned by the DP World Tour must have a minimum purse of $2m.

Next year will feature a minimum of 47 tournaments in 27 different countries, including new events in the United Arab Emirates, Japan, South Africa and Belgium. Neither the European Tour nor DP World would detail the length of their partnership or its total monetary value but it is understood the latter runs into hundreds of millions of dollars.

“This announcement is momentous and will herald a new era in global golf,” said Keith Pelley, the European Tour’s chief executive. “When I joined [in 2016] I told the board I felt the name of the tour was a misnomer and did not reflect our brand. We are definitely a world tour.

“The DP World Tour is a natural evolution of our decade-long partnership, and the presence of ‘world’ in our new title better reflects our global reach. We will always remember our heritage and those who have gone before us who helped us shape our tour but we also rejoice in our global footprint.”

Pelley refused to reference directly the Saudi/Asian Tour alliance. However, this will inevitably be viewed as the further closing of ranks by the PGA and European Tours.

Rory McIlroy, speaking via video conference to a media event held in Dubai , branded the deal “great news for global golf”. The four-times major winner has previously spoken out against Saudi plans for his sport.

Jay Monahan, the PGA Tour’s commissioner, said: “I’ve said before that our respective tours are positioned to grow – together – over the next 10 years faster than we ever have at any point in our existence and today’s announcement is another point of proof in those efforts.”

The PGA Tour, DP World Tour and LIV Golf stunned the sporting world on Tuesday when announcing they are to form "a new collectively owned" entity. But what do we know so far about the shock merger, what does it mean for the Ryder Cup and golf's future, and how have the players reacted?

What has happened?

LIV Golf, launched in 2022, was able to lure some of golf's biggest names away from the PGA Tour and DP World Tour, with players like Phil Mickelson, Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Sergio Garcia and Ian Poulter among those to sign up and claim a share of the staggering sums of money being offered.

Mickelson, who has become a de-facto spokesperson for the LIV Tour over the last year, tweeted: "Awesome news".

But some PGA Tour players, including two-time major winner Collin Morikawa, appeared to suggest they discovered the news via social media at the point it broke.

Sky Sports News reporter Jamie Weir said: "This is, first and foremost, a complete shock. This came out of the blue,

"I think everybody was surprised by this - I've spoken to a lot of players this afternoon and they knew nothing about this at all, so they were finding out for the first time like a lot of us by scrolling through Twitter this afternoon, finding out bits and bobs here and there."

How will the Ryder Cup be affected?

A big question to come out of the announcement of the merger is how might selection be affected for this September's Ryder Cup teams in Rome.

DP World Tour chief executive Keith Pelley explained to Sky Sports News: "There's only two criteria to be a Ryder Cup player - you have to be European and you have to be a DP World Tour member. Those are the criteria.

"If you're not a DP World Tour member, you can't play in the Ryder Cup."

European stalwarts Garcia, Poulter, Lee Westwood and Henrik Stenson, who was initially named team captain, all resigned from the DP World Tour in May following further sanctions on players who competed in LIV Golf events last year without permission.

Pelley said of the quartet: "They're not members. They would have to be reinstated. Maybe they will request reinstatement but we will have to see."

Weir added: "Luke Donald will still be the European Ryder Cup captain in Rome this year.

"Sergio Garcia, Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter, the backbone of many successful Ryder Cup teams, they will not be in Rome this year.

"Under the DP World Tour criteria, by May you need to have become a member of the DP World Tour to be eligible for the Ryder Cup team. Those guys are not eligible for the Ryder Cup team as things stand.

"That's not to say that come 2024 they might re-join the DP World Tour and they could be on the team in 2025 and Ian Poulter could be captain."

McIlroy reacts to merger: I still hate LIV

Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy was often at the forefront of the battle with LIV over the last two years, defending the PGA Tour.

In addressing the media for the first time since Tuesday's announcement, McIlroy said he learned of the deal "pretty much at the same time everyone else did", adding that he felt like a "sacrificial lamb".

McIlroy also said there has to be "consequences to actions" for the golfers that left the PGA Tour but believes the new merger is ultimately "good for golf".

He also maintained that despite welcoming the new entity he still "hates LIV" and he suggested that LIV Golf is not part of the new deal, adding that it's Saudi-backed Public Investment Fund that are joining as a partner.

McIlroy said: "Whether you like it or not, the PIF are going to keep spending money in golf... at least the PGA Tour now controls how that money is spent.

"One of the biggest sovereign wealth funds in the world, would you rather have them as a partner or an enemy? At the end of the day, money talks and you'd rather have them as a partner."

He added: "I think this is going to be good for the game of professional golf. It unifies it and it secures its financial future.

"There's mixed emotions in there as well, as there is going to be.

"At least it means that the litigation goes away, which has been a massive burden for everyone involved with the tour and playing on the tour."

Is Greg Norman still involved?

A key name absent from the press release announcing the merger was Greg Norman, LIV Golf's CEO and one of the leaders in the Saudi-backed Tour's creation.

He has been the target of a lot of criticism from those on the PGA Tour, and PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan - who holds the position as chair of the newly-formed entity - told CBS he only informed Norman about the merger moments before making it public.

"I made a call just before this and of course he is a partner with us, and all the stakeholders that we have with us they had the call right before this interview," Al-Rumayyan said.

Sky Sports golf expert Dame Laura Davies said of that revelation: "It sounds like it's been a bit cloak and dagger; if Greg Norman didn't know about it, then if I was Greg Norman then I would feel like one of the losers in this deal because you would have thought he would have been at the forefront."

Weir added on Norman: "He's conspicuous by his absence in that statement.

"He's been an agent of disruption for Saudi Arabia over the past 12 months; he's ruffled a lot of feathers. There was a lot of people saying that for there to be some kind of consensus and common ground he would have to be moved to one side - it appears that might now well be the case."

Sky Sports News' Jamie Weir:

"There are a lot of unanswered questions. One of them is how will men's professional golf look next year?

"The PGA Tour have already created this new schedule for next year with designated events - how are they going to look now? There will be a DP World Tour schedule and will LIV continue in its own form?

"For the rest of this season it will continue presumably as normal but next season, will we see these 54-hole shotgun start tournaments with the Fireballs and the Majesticks? Perhaps not. All of this still needs to come out in the wash.

"What does it mean this Saudi involvement in golf? Deep in the statement, it says PIF now have first refusal on anybody else wanting to invest in the PGA Tour. Essentially now Saudi Arabia have a much larger stake in men's professional golf than they did before.

"And the big, big question is what happens with the players? The players that stayed loyal and the players who will be coming back.

"There needs to be some form of sanction for those players, I think is what a lot of the PGA Tour loyalists will feel. The players are understandably pretty aggrieved and a lot of them feel those huge sums of money they turned down, will they be recompensed for that and will there be any sanctions for these guys coming back?

"It's been a crazy 12 months for the game of golf. I don't think this is going to go away any time soon."

In a surprise announcement Tuesday morning that came after a year of bitter fracturing in men’s professional golf, the PGA Tour and the Saudi-backed LIV Golf tour announced an agreement to merge their business operations.

The ramifications of the development are still unraveling, as a 4 p.m. ET meeting has been scheduled for PGA Tour players, many of whom reported being entirely unaware of the agreement.

Both the PGA Tour and LIV Golf, along with the DP World Tour, announced the move in a joint statement published Tuesday. The merger aims to create “a new, collectively owned, for-profit entity to ensure that all stakeholders benefit from a model that delivers maximum excitement and competition among the game’s best players.”

The terms of the agreement are not fully finalized and are scheduled to be completed in the coming months.

“After two years of disruption and distraction, this is a historic day for the game we all know and love,” PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said Tuesday in a statement.

“Going forward, fans can be confident that we will, collectively, deliver on the promise we’ve always made — to promote competition of the best in professional golf and that we are committed to securing and driving the game’s future.”

Why is LIV Golf so controversial?

The LIV tour drew criticism because it is funded entirely by the PIF, the sovereign wealth investment fund of the Saudi government.

Saudi Arabia has been accused of wide-ranging human rights abuses, including politically motivated killings, torture, forced disappearances and inhumane treatment of prisoners. And members of the royal family and Saudi government were accused of involvement in the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, a Saudi journalist and Washington Post columnist.

What do we know about the terms of the merger agreement between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf?

There are still several key details that are unknown about the merger. For starters, the new entity does not have a name yet.

A key element in the merger is financial. The Public Investment Fund (PIF), the sovereign wealth investment fund of the Saudi government, “will make a capital investment into the new entity to facilitate its growth and success,” according to the news release. The PIF had been the sole entity to entirely fund the LIV Golf operation.

Additionally, the merger stipulates that the PIF “will initially be the exclusive investor in the new entity” and “will have the exclusive right to further invest in the new entity, including a right of first refusal on any capital.”

A newly established board of directors will direct and oversee the new entity’s operations, schedule, investments. PIF Governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan will be part of the new entity’s board of directors and will be on its executive committee. The announcement of the full board will come at a later date.

Additionally, the merger will lead to “a mutually agreed end to all pending litigation between the participating parties.” In August 2022, a number of golfers who joined the LIV tour filed an antitrust lawsuit against the PGA Tour, challenging their suspensions.

The merger stipulates that after the conclusion of the 2023 season, the PGA Tour, LIV Golf and the DP World Tour “will work cooperatively and in good faith to establish a fair and objective process” to allow players who left the PGA Tour and DP tour to re-apply for membership.

Is the PGA Tour a nonprofit?

While the merger announced the creation of “a new, collectively owned, for-profit entity,” the PGA Tour is retaining its position as “a 501(c)(6) tax exempt organization.”

The difference with the merger, however, is that — in the threat of continued disruption in men’s professional golf — the PGA Tour reversed course and is aligning with the massive influx of Saudi capital.

In an interview on CBS in June 2022, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan ripped the LIV tour over links between the Saudi government and the terrorist attacks on 9/11. In the interview, Monahan spoke about players who joined LIV Golf needing to apologize to the families of those who lost loved ones on 9/11 and asked: “Have you ever had to apologize for being a member of the PGA Tour?”

What is LIV Golf?

The LIV Golf Invitational Series made its debut in June 2022 after the tour lured some notable players from the PGA Tour such as Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson. Others like Brooks Koepka, the winner of the most recent PGA Championship, Bryson DeChambeau and Cameron Smith have since joined. The LIV tour presented a disruption in the dynamics of the sport.

The format of play of the tour also presented a shakeup to the PGA Tour.

Events were designed as 54-hole, three-round, no-cut competitions. LIV Golf incorporated shotgun starts to expedite play. Players were split into four-person teams. Purses were divided between individual placement and team placement, offering players more financial incentives to participate.

What has been Tiger Woods' stance on LIV Golf?

In May 2022, Tiger Woods reaffirmed his commitment to the PGA Tour.

“Phil has said some things that I think a lot of us who are committed to the Tour and committed to the legacy of the Tour have pushed back against, and he’s taken some personal time, and we all understand that,” Woods said ahead of the 2022 PGA Championship. “Some of his views on how the Tour could be run, should be run, been a lot of disagreement there. Obviously we’re going to have difference of opinions, how he sees the Tour, and we’ll go from there.”

LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman confirmed in August 2022 that the league offered Woods in the neighborhood of $700 million to $800 million to join the Saudi-backed tour.

What have other notable PGA Tour golfers said about LIV Golf?

A number of players who declined to join LIV Golf, such as Rory McIlroy, had been publicly outspoken in their criticism of the Saudi-backed tour.

“There’s no room in the golf world for LIV Golf,” McIlroy said in July 2022. “I don’t agree with what LIV is doing. If LIV went away tomorrow, I’d be super happy.”

What has former U.S. President Donald Trump said about LIV Golf?

During a pro-am event at his Trump National Golf Club May 25, Trump praised LIV Golf and defended his business relationship with the controversial Saudi-funded tour.

“They’ve been great for golf. The Saudis have been fantastic for golf,” Trump said then. “And they’re going to make it a big part of, inside their country, they’re going to do some great courses.”

LIV Golf also has upcoming stops scheduled at Trump courses in Bedminster, New Jersey, and Miami, Florida, later this year.

After the news Tuesday, Trump celebrated the merger on his Truth Social platform, according to CNBC. “Great news from LIV Golf. A big, beautiful, and glamorous deal for the wonderful world of golf. Congrats to all!!!”

What happens with LIV Golf players who want to return to PGA Tour events?

This is the big, immediate question with the merger: what happens to former PGA Tour players who were suspended indefinitely for defecting to LIV Golf?

The short answer: there is now a path for them to rejoin the PGA Tour.

Following the 2023 season, LIV and PGA will establish a “fair and objective process” for players who want to re-apply for the PGA Tour or the DP World Tour.

Is LIV Golf going away?

The two sides will “conduct a comprehensive evaluation” to determine how to integrate the team golf format championed by LIV into the pro game.

In the meantime, LIV Golf will fulfill its 2023 season requirements as planned. Seven events remain on the LIV calendar through November 2023.

What is going on with the antitrust lawsuit filed against the PGA Tour?

In August 2022, 11 players who left the PGA Tour for LIV Golf filed an antitrust lawsuit to challenge their suspensions from the PGA Tour.

This followed a report from the month before that the United States Department of Justice was investigating the PGA Tour for possible anticompetitive behavior. Augusta National Golf Club, which operates the Masters Tournament, the United States Golf Association and the PGA of America were later revealed to also be part of the investigation.

Since then, lawyers on both sides have battled in various court proceedings to gain leverage. With the merger, however, both sides are mutually agreeing to end all pending litigation against the other.

PGA Tour a “lonely place” compared to European circuit, per DP World Tour pro

T hanks to his superb play on the DP World Tour a season ago, which included a runner-up finish to Rory McIlroy at the Genesis Scottish Open , Robert MacIntyre earned PGA Tour membership for the 2024 season.

But playing on the PGA Tour has not been the best experience for MacIntyre, compared to the comfortable confines of the DP World Tour.

“It’s completely different,” MacIntyre explained to Bunkered , a Scottish golf publication.

“When you’re on the DP World Tour, it’s very friendly. Everyone is together. We’re all traveling the world. If we’re struggling with certain things, we speak to folk around us.”

So far this season, MacIntyre, who played in his first Ryder Cup in 2023 and did not lose a match, has only two top-10 finishes to his name. He tied for sixth at the Mexico Open and eighth at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

But he missed the cut at The Players Championship and did not qualify for The Masters . He also has not met the criteria to play in any Signature Event so far this season. Instead, he tied for 32nd at the Puerto Rico Open, held when Scottie Scheffler triumphed at Bay Hill.

MacIntyre will also play at the Myrtle Beach Classic this week, not the Wells Fargo Championship , which bodes an elite 69-player field.

“You come out here to the PGA Tour, and it’s all so unfamiliar,” added MacIntyre.

“There’s less chatting. There’s less dinners. There’s just less of that big family feel that you get on the European Tour.”

The European Ryder Cup team specifically prides itself on team camaraderie and chemistry. By extension, those principles spread the DP World Tour, where the top European players rise through the ranks.

“Sitting in player dining, you do it in Europe and you’ve got all the Scottish boys, you’ve got all the British boys,” MacIntyre added.

“A lot of the European guys, if you’re sitting on your own, they will come and join you... Out [on the PGA Tour], because you don’t know many folks, you don’t know them in that same kind of depth, they don’t come to sit with you. It does become a lonely place on the golf side of it.”

The golf courses are obviously different, too.

“It is what it is. You’ve got to get on with it. There are a lot of other things. New golf courses,” MacIntyre explained.

“Over here, they are pretty much all new, and then you’ve got the different grasses. Obviously, I was not brought up playing a lot of Bermuda, grainy grass, pitching, putting. It’s just completely different. But it’s a learning curve.”

Hopefully, MacIntyre’s experience of playing golf in the United States will improve as time passes. But for now, the Scotsman continues to struggle to grow accustomed to the difficulties of American professional golf—something that numerous European players have toiled with before and likely will do so in the future.

Yet, the Scotsman knows that plenty of opportunity awaits within the 50 states.

“It’s a great place to play golf. It’s obviously where the best players in the world are. It’s where you can make more money,” MacIntyre said.

“It’s a different environment for me, but I’m just trying to enjoy it as much as I can and learn as much as I can, week in and week out.”

Anticipation is building ahead of the 2024 US PGA Championship , the second men's Major Championship of the year.

Weather forecast: Cold front moves through Wells Fargo Championship

Update Thursday noon ET: The first round of the Wells Fargo Championship is underway.

Update Thursday 9:02 a.m. ET: The first round of the Wells Fargo Championship is delayed one hour due to inclement weather. The first tee time is now scheduled for noon ET. Threesomes will tee off on Nos. 1 and 10 between noon and 2:01 p.m.

The latest forecast calls for more rain this morning, with the heaviest coming between 10 a.m. and noon. Some showers may linger past 1 p.m. but the afternoon is expected to be dry except for a slight chance of a pop-up thunderstorm past 6 p.m. The temperature is not expected to surpass 80 degrees after a cold front moved through the area, and the wind is expected to blow around 20 mph from the southwest. Sunset is at 8:16 p.m.

The 69 players at the Wells Fargo Championship will be grouped in threesomes for the first two rounds because of a cold front that could bring thunderstorms Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

Groups will tee off between 11 a.m. and 1:01 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, from both Nos. 1 and 10.

The Charlotte, North Carolina area is under a severe thunderstorm watch Wednesday afternoon; storms are expected to reach the area around 4 p.m., with a second round of strong storms expected after midnight. (There's a 60% chance of rain at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., with a 20% chance of rain at 9 p.m. and midnight, and a 60% chance of rain at 3 a.m.)

Therefore, the field can expect soft conditions for Thursday's opening round at Quail Hollow Club.

Showers and thunderstorms are likely in the morning Thursday, with additional thunderstorms possible in the afternoon. The relatively small field size will allow for greater flexibility in completing the first round by day's end, but Mother Nature could offer curveballs.

Rain will be in the area again on Friday, with thunderstorm activity also possible.

Once the weekend arrives, the rain is gone. There will be cloudy skies on both Saturday and Sunday with temperatures hitting the mid-70s.

• Friday: Mostly cloudy with showers and thunderstorms possible, with a 50% chance of rain. Projected rainfall is .2 inches. High 76 F, Low 63 F. Winds NW 8-15 mph.
• Saturday: Partly cloudy, with zero chance of rain. High 74 F, Low 55 F. Winds W 6-12 mph.

Tiger Woods to be lone player on negotiating committee with Saudis

Tiger Woods will be the lone player on a five-member subcommittee that will be involved in negotiations with the Public Investment Fund, part of a busy day of governance as the PGA Tour tries to strike a deal with Saudi backers of LIV Golf.

Woods was appointed to the PGA Tour board in August, making him the sixth player-director and the only one whose board term has no limits.

The tour said Woods will be part of the “transaction subcommittee” on the board of PGA Tour Enterprises that will handle day-to-day negotiations as PIF seeks to become a minority investor.

Also on the subcommittee are PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan, board chairman Joe Gorder, John W. Henry of Fenway Sports Group and Joe Ogilvie, a former tour player appointed as a director liaison in March.

The subcommittee reports back to the full board.

The developments capped a day that began with Rory McIlroy losing the inside track on rejoining the board as Webb Simpson’s replacement when board members resisted his return.

“I think there was a subset of people on the board that were maybe uncomfortable with me coming back on for some reason,” McIlroy said at the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina, where a $20 million signature event is being played.

Simpson had offered to resign, but only if McIlroy were to replace him. When a player director resigns, the other players on the board have to unanimously agree on a successor. McIlroy resigned from the board in November , and the players selected Jordan Spieth to replace him.

The seven players — Woods, Spieth, Simpson, Ogilvie, Patrick Cantlay, Adam Scott and Peter Malnati — are on the board of the PGA Tour and PGA Tour Enterprises, the commercial entity that agreed to a deal with Strategic Sports Group as a minority investor.

That deal included a $1.5 billion investment, which could be as much as $3 billion.

McIlroy was willing to return, believing he could help find a solution to the split in golf that has left some of the best players on two tours. McIlroy sees the reunification in some form as the ultimate goal and rubbed players the wrong way when he suggested earlier this year that LIV players return without punishment.

“Today’s news is in no way a commentary on Rory’s important perspective and influence,” Monahan said in a statement. “It’s simple a matter of adherence to our governance process by which a tour player becomes a board member.

“Webb remaining in his position as a member of the policy board and PGA Tour Enterprises board through the end of his term provides the continuity needed at this vital time,” he said. “We are making progress in our negotiations with the PIF.”

McIlroy is certain to stay involved in an unofficial capacity based on his experience of two years on the board and his voice in the game. He was the only European tour member on the PGA Tour board, and McIlroy has cultivated relationships across continents during his career.

He had said on a British soccer podcast at the start of this year that he met with the PIF governor, Yasir Al-Rumayyan, at the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai in late 2022 and that he returned home and encouraged the tour board to meet with him.

The framework agreement among the PGA Tour, European tour and PIF was announced June 6, with a deadline to finalize it by the end of 2023. Negotiations continue with little progress.

Woods was among the player directors who went to the Bahamas on March 18 — Monahan and Henry also attended — to meet with Al-Rumayyan.

Woods said at the Masters about that meeting, “I don’t know if we’re closer, but certainly we’re headed in the right direction. That was a very positive meeting, and I think both sides came away from the meeting feeling positive.”

Gorder is the chairman and CEO of Valero, the title sponsor of the Texas Open. He has been appointed the inaugural chairman of the PGA Tour Enterprises board.
