Preparations for the 2024 Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes is well under way and Bishop Paul Swarbrick invites you to join him 23rd  – 30 th July 2024

The pastoral theme for 3 years 2022-24 are the word’s that Mary, the Mother of God, entrusted to Bernadette Soubirous on 2 nd March 1858: “Go tell the priests to build a chapel here and that people should come in procession”.   

2022 – ‘Go and tell the priests….”

2024 – “…and that people should come in procession.”

The Relics of St Bernadette’s visit to the UK has inspired many pilgrims to join us on our 2023 Lourdes Pilgrimage for the first time. You are most welcome.  We also look forward to welcoming back pilgrims who have been many times to Lourdes.  New faces, new life and new targets are essential each year if the pilgrimage is to continue to grow therefore I ask you, if you have not yet booked then please to consider coming on pilgrimage with us in 2023.

MEDICAL & BRANCARDIER TEAMS!!  Our care for the sick pilgrims are second to none and are totally reliant on our volunteer helpers. As a volunteer you will be assisting the sick, infirm and lonely of our diocese.  Therefore, we appeal for nurses and carers throughout the diocese. If you or anyone you know are willing to be part of the Medical team then please contact [email protected]  Many of you will know what a rewarding, wonderful experience working at the service of the sick pilgrims in Lourdes is.

YOUTH 2024:-  For the 2024 the Pilgrimage Director of Youth will be Katie O Donnell.  Katie will be supported by Team leaders who will ensure the young people have a spiritual and uplifting week.

PLEASE NOTE THE YOUNG PEOPLE WILL HAVE A STOP OFF B & B NIGHT WITH A DAY SIGHTSEEING IN PARIS ON THEIR WAY BACK TO THE UK. 

We call upon young people in the diocese 15+ to consider coming on pilgrimage. You will be given all the preparation, support and training you need.  Many young people make decisions about future careers whilst in Lourdes.  Find time to explore your faith, to learn about yourself and to make friends you will have for life. Many often say “you don’t ‘go’ to Lourdes, you are ‘called’’.  Please answer the call in 2023!

Eagles announce Manchester residency as part of farewell tour

Eagles have announced a three-night residency of Manchester .

The US band – known for the hit songs Hotel California, Take It Easy, One Of These Nights, Desperado and The Best Of My Love – will play the new Co-op Live arena as part of their Long Goodbye tour.

The UK dates in Manchester include May 31, June 1 and June 4 and special guests, the American rock band Steely Dan.

More UK dates could be scheduled as “information will be released as dates are set”.

Eagles, currently made up of Don Henley , Joe Walsh, Timothy Schmit, Vince Gill, and Deacon Frey, the son of the late Glenn Frey , said they have had “a miraculous 52-year odyssey, performing for people all over the globe; keeping the music alive in the face of tragic losses, upheavals and setbacks of many kinds”.

In the last decade, the Los Angeles-formed band have lost founding members including Randy Meisner, who died in July 2023 at the age of 77 and Glenn Frey, who died in in 2016 at the age of 67.

Eagles also said: “We know how fortunate we are, and we are truly grateful. Our long run has lasted far longer than any of us ever dreamed.

“But, everything has its time, and the time has come for us to close the circle. The official farewell tour is currently under way.

“We want to give all our fans a chance to see us on this final round. So, scheduling information will be released as dates are set.

“The difficulties of booking venues for multiple nights may require us to return to certain cities, depending on demand.

“But, we hope to see as many of you as we can, before we finish up. Most importantly, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for embracing this band and its music.

The band also announced another European date at the GelreDome in Arnhem, The Netherlands, on June 13.

A US tour began last year and will play the last scheduled date at Charlotte, North Carolina, on March 16 in the Spectrum Centre.

Eagles originally consisted of Don Felder, who left the band in the 2000s, Meisner, Henley, Frey and Bernie Leadon, who departed in the 1970s.

The group previously disbanded in the 1980s before reuniting in 1994 for a comeback tour featuring Henley, Frey, Walsh, Schmit and Felder.

In 1998, past and current members were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and performed Take It Easy and Hotel California.

The Eagles Greatest Hits collection and Hotel California are among the best-selling albums of modern times and have sold more than 20 million copies each.

THE STORY OF MEDJUGORJE

Why Medjugorje?

Our Lady appeared to Ivan, Jakov, Marija, Mirjana, Vicka and Ivanka on 24th June 1981 on the place known as Apparition Hill. She had a message of peace and has continued to appear to some of the visionaries daily for many years sharing with them important messages.

These apparitions of Our Lady of Medjugorje, also known as Queen of Peace, still take place today, although less regularly.

Saint James Church and Apparition Hill are the two main places of worship at Medjugorje. Apparition Hill is often climbed by pilgrims visiting the sanctuary and, along the path, a wooden cross marks the site where the Blessed Virgin made the first call to peace in 1981.

Pilgrimages to Medjugorje have been authorised by the Vatican since 2019.

Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh rocks into Napier this weekend

T here won’t be any borrowed strings for legendary Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh when he hits Napier at the weekend for his fourth time at the historic Ōtātara Pā site.

“He said, I’ve brought my guitar,” said Denis O’Reilly, who encouraged the now 76-year-old to make his first soul-searching sojourn to the site breaking from a tour with Kiwi-Pacific reggae icons Herbs in 1989. “He’s definitely here to play.”

Play there he did when he returned in 2004 and 2015 , and now provides Hawke’s Bay with a special treat in what will be a four-hour show on Sunday, starting at 11am and with O’Reilly expecting about 1000 people to have settled in time for a pōhiri about midday.

In New Zealand for a break between Eagles’ Long Goodbye Final Tour dates in North America in March and Manchester, England, in May, Walsh looks set to do at least three songs, joined by EIT music students in two of them harking back to his days touring with Herbs.

Other artists performing include Frankie Stevens, Brannigan Kaa, Pereri King and the Greenmeadows School Ukettes.

Less predictable is how many will take the opportunity to be with Walsh as he returns to the scene of “a moment of clarity”, where he started finding himself again and resolving his issues with drugs and alcohol, now more than 30 years behind him.

Thus, Sunday’s event is also drug and alcohol-free, in keeping with the kaupapa of the day, although, unlike most gigs in the modern commercial environment, gig-goers are being encouraged to take their own food.

Entry is free, although koha is encouraged, and fellow pilgrims are being told to park at the EIT carpark, and then walk to the site, which will have a shuttle service up the hill to the amphitheatre for those that need it, with assistance from Māori Wardens.

The “special place”, as Walsh has described Ōtātara Pā Historic Reserve in the past, encompasses one of the largest pā complexes in New Zealand, O’Reilly said.

First settled at least 500 years ago, it was once home to between 3000 and 5000 people, in a complex covering more than 40 hectares.

“Even when not hosting a genuine rock legend, Ōtātara is a very special spot – as Joe’s experience there attests,” said Waiohiki Community Trust chairman O’Reilly.

It was one of the few places in New Zealand to catch the first glimpse of sunrise in the new millennium on January 1, 2000, when many other areas on the East Coast of the North Isand had the historic moment blocked out by clouds.
