Who are you and what do you do?

I’m a multihyphenate. I’m a performer, a singer, a DJ, I throw events. I have a charity, Rings Alliance, for trans and queer artists. We’re still getting our footing but you’ll be hearing more about that soon.

Describe your personal style.

I’ve always been really rebellious. And my mom says she knew the moment that she was pregnant with me that I was going to only do what I wanted. I think my style reflects that. Even the things that you would think I would care about — like what’s trending, what the standard of fashion or music is — I never really care. If it hits me, I wear it. And if it sounds good to me, I do it, because I can make anything work. I mean that in life as well as in my music and also in my style. I think my self, my work and personal style all reflect someone that works really hard for themselves and by themselves. It’s a reflection of ambition, being daring, being exciting, and how to bring those things together because it is really remarkable to do that in a world that does not champion and welcome that. (I’m blessed to have found a community and a personal world that does.) My style reflects that person, and my effort toward being great and having fun.

Talk to me about dreaming up an outfit around this Acne Studios bag.

For the last few years I’ve really been into these really small bags that don’t have a lot of space — I love a clutch size. So when I saw the bag I was excited because it was more spacious and had this rectangular shape so I knew that I could fit a lot of things in it, which meant that I had more options to wear things that allowed for a sleek [look]. I don’t have to wear pockets because my purse can hold it all, so I have these thigh-high boots on. I definitely thought about how flexible [the bag] would be for going out or even traveling because I don’t like to travel with a lot. I like to have as much as I can fit in my purse and still be sexy, cute and ready to go.

How does sense of place inform sense of style? How do you travel through L.A. with style in mind?

I’m usually in what I like to call butch-wares. I definitely like to be comfy when I travel through L.A., especially in the daytime — I’m not trying to put on a look. I also don’t want to be bogged down by the idea that dolls [trans women] need to present super feminine or hyper-femme to be able to pass through life. Passability is not even a concern for me. I just try to be as comfortable as possible because I’m doing so much at all times — why would I want to be uncomfortable on top of working as hard as I work? But, there’s nothing more c— than having a fab bag on you. Sweats or not, a fab bag is a fab bag. Like, actually, let me dress more bummy and pull out the Acne bag.

Lewis Hamilton’s $610 Perfume Sends Shockwaves at the GQ Creativity Awards: “You’re Smelling Good”

Lewis Hamilton today is not only a Formula 1 driver, he is also a fashion icon with Red Carpet entries to look out for. He is often found at high-profile events like award functions for which he is often a nominee. While most of the award’s he has received are for his achievements in Formula 1, he was recently invited to a lifestyle and fashion award function.

The GQ Creativity Awards is the annual function where the magazine felicitates personalities for their creative achievements. Lewis Hamilton was invited to the function held on April 11 and that’s where he mesmerized the host with more than just words. It was another sense that the 7-time world champion targeted and impressed.

They say, A perfume is no less than a way of letting people build an image of you. This is something Lewis Hamilton has understood along his journey to stardom. Known for his fashion sense, the Mercedes driver leaves nothing behind when it comes to representing himself for who he is. He does this with a range of ways to express himself and fashion is one of them. But you need to smell as good as you look to leave an impression and an impression is what he left at the GQ Creativity Awards.

While talking to two hosts, Hamilton was dressed in his long pinstripe Dior overcoat, and this got him a compliment from one of the hosts. However, the compliment stated, “You’re smelling good, Lewis,” which hints that the host liked the F1 racer’s scent. Hamilton is now known to have a signature look and appeal, and he carries that on with his perfumes too. The scent he was wearing was no ordinary perfume, but a mix of Tom Ford Oud Wood eau de parfum and Maison Margiela.

This combination costs him a whopping $610 for the mix. The Tom Ford sets him back $445 for 100 ml, while the Margiela comes at $165 for another 100 ml. This combination is what the 100+ GP winner likes to wear to compliment his style. But obviously, his attire did turn some heads, as he was theoretically shirtless.

Lewis Hamilton is not scared of pushing boundaries with his driving and with his fashion. This year at the GQ Purple Carpet, he made a bold fashion statement by going shirtless underneath a long pinstripe Dior coat. The coat is from the 2024 Fall/Winter collection, showcasing Hamilton’s unique sense of style but he did not carry this out without some bling.

Hamilton accessorized the outfit with a diamond chain, which complemented the silver beaded detailing on the coat’s waist. He paired the coat with black trousers and with his signature scent, he was ready to slay. His fashion comes at a price that might be too much for many, but that’s just Lewis Hamilton and how he rolls.

When the theater smells like an Irish bog

The performance piece ‘distillation’ uses customized fragrances to evoke a setting and a mood.

Growing up amid the rural peat bogs of Ireland’s Midlands, Luke Casserly says, he found the landscape “boring — a sort of nothingness I wanted to move away from, a sense that there was something better elsewhere.” And so move away he did, earning a theater degree from Trinity College in Dublin and a certificate in “art and ecological practice” from Ireland’s National College of Art and Design.

At the same time, Casserly explains during a Zoom call from Dublin, he had long wondered: “Why is the bog never on a postcard? Because it’s so beautiful, but you never really see it.”

That may be about to change. If you can’t bring an audience to the bog, Casserly thought, maybe you can put the bog, or at least its scent, in front of an audience’s noses.

The 28-year-old artist’s latest project is “Distillation,” a one-man show about the past, present and future — and the smell — of Ireland’s bogs. Commissioned and presented by Solas Nua , Washington’s Irish arts organization, in collaboration with Dublin’s Abbey Theatre , the show will run for about five weeks at D.C.’s Eaton House, followed by a week at Bethesda’s Round House Theatre, then a North American tour. It incorporates a specially designed perfume loosely inspired by the bog landscape — an example of sensory theater, a rare but growing form of stagecraft that invites audiences to use more of their five senses.

Staged at a massive round table for 25 audience members, covered with 330 pounds of dried Irish peat — Casserly calls it a “sculpture,” designed by Ger Clancy — the show is not easy to pigeonhole. It’s part educational TED Talk, part community-building and part campfire story, during which Casserly speaks at times in the voice of the bog. And it features a bespoke fragrance created by Joan Woods of Waters + Wild organic perfumery.

Scent will not permeate the performance space, like the fresh-baked apple pie did in the 2016 Broadway musical “ Waitress .” Or Irish soda bread, hot from the oven, in Solas Nua’s “ Wild Sky ,” a 2016 play staged by the company’s artistic director, Rex Daugherty, in the living room of a private home in Washington. Or the scent of real bacon sizzling in a pan during a scene in a 2010 off-Broadway production of “Our Town.” “ Sleep No More ,” an immersive restaging of “Macbeth” in New York, features ambient smells throughout its staging area (and closes later this spring).

Dried peat, on the other hand, is odorless. It only gives off its distinctive, pipe tobacco-like aroma — both rich and sweet — when burned, as it traditionally was in Ireland for fuel. In December 2020, Ireland suspended the industrial harvesting of peat from Ireland’s bogs, the soft, spongy wetlands that cover one-sixth of the country’s surface.

“Distillation” is the third of three bog-themed artworks by Casserly — including a bog live stream and a series of audio field recordings made in five Irish landscapes (bog, forest, port, coastline and mountain). The trilogy was born during the early pandemic, when shutdowns forced Casserly to move back home. It was during that isolation that long walks in the bog renewed deep, buried feelings and memories, not just of nostalgia, but also of the environmental, economic and cultural implications of peat. Casserly’s father, a third-generation farmer, used to work for Bord na Móna, the state power company that once harvested peat on an industrial scale to generate electricity.

“It’s very much a hybrid of a number of things,” says Casserly, whose often autobiographical work centers on environmental themes. He calls himself a “performance-maker” rather than a more familiar term, because not all of his pieces take place in a traditional theater. “I perform the work,” he explains, “but I’m not an actor. Nor am I a playwright, but I write text for performance.”

Smell is integral to what Daugherty calls this “4D performance journey.” Several fragrant items are passed around the table. First, a canister of coffee beans to cleanse the olfactory system, a tradition of the perfumer’s art; then a handful of fresh peat, partly decomposed organic matter that has the earthy smell of fertilizer; and later a clump of live moss, which covers the bogs like a blanket. The scene-stealing manner in which the perfume is ultimately revealed, late in the show, is best not spoiled.

Although Casserly and Woods lay down on the peat when they first came together to create the fragrance, pushing their noses directly into the soil, it is not meant to replicate the smell. “To have a real experience of what it smells like,” Casserly says, “you should probably visit an Irish bog and, you know, inhale.”

Rather, he calls the perfume an “artistic translation,” an honoring of a place that has in some aspects “just disappeared.” Casserly compares the changes in the Midlands to what is also happening in the U.S. coal-mining states as that industry declines.

According to Woods, every perfume has “a beginning, a middle and an end,” starting with the lighter, more evanescent top notes that “fly away” and ending with the base notes that linger. Her formula for this show’s perfume, which smells slightly different every time she re-creates it, features bog-myrtle, coriander, coconut, oakmoss and oud (made from the resinous bark of a Southeast Asian tree), among other ingredients. It’s a lovely, complex bouquet, but it’s hard to pin down, evoking dark soil, smoke and flowers. When asked to come up with a description, over Zoom from her West Cork studio, Woods demurs. “You’re the writer,” she says with a laugh. Only later, after some reflection, was she able to email a list of associations. It reads like a poem:

Why is scent so hard to describe? Maybe because the olfactory system plugs directly into the limbic system, including the amygdala and hippocampus, parts of the brain connected to emotion and memory, not language.

At least that’s the theory of David Bernstein, a Montreal-based “psychoactive perfumer.” Bernstein’s first theatrical scent-design credit was a 2010 play about a woman losing her virginity: It featured little lunchbox-size scent samplers that the audience opened, featuring evocations of Old Spice deodorant, crayons, condensed milk and a riding crop — a sensory cocktail suggesting innocence and its loss. More recently, Bernstein and his company, Jovian , created a scent called Pool for a Toronto art exhibition curated around the themes of water and submergence.

Bernstein calls fragrance an “antidote to loss,” paraphrasing perfumer Daniela Andrier . “It hooks you up to the mainframe,” Bernstein says, “because it is a direct line to memories. In a way, it’s like that old trope of wearing your mother’s perfume: It brings her back. It allows you to travel that space.”

Ava Phillippe just landed a new gig.

The model and beauty-lover just made her debut as the face of Vince Camuto's Wonderbloom fragrance, a scent she calls "girly" and "light."

"Sometimes when you think about perfume, you might think, 'Oh, that's too much,'" Phillippe, 24, tells PEOPLE exclusively. "It can be too heavy or a little more mature than is good for me. But I really like this one."

The delicate and "universal" scent of Wonderbloom made it the perfect pick for Phillippe's first foray into the perfume space, especially considering she didn't even get into fragrances until her early 20s, she says.

"I kind of started my beauty journey with more of the basics of hair and makeup," she says. "Then I started to dabble in [fragrance] when I was in my early 20s and I was exploring. It was that whole experiment where you go out with your friends and they're like, 'Ooh, you smell good.' Or 'Ooh, what are you wearing?' My friends and I have gotten into it more as we get older."

That brought Phillippe, who is the daughter of Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe , to here — starring in her first fragrance campaign with Vince Camuto for the brand's newest scent, Wonderbloom.  

"[Vince Camuto] represents a lot of beautiful things about femininity and keeping things really light and joyful," Phillippe says of the brand. "We had so much fun and everything was so whimsical and playful [with the campaign]. I've just really enjoyed this journey."

For Wonderbloom — which has top notes of pear, almond milk and fresh rhubarb — Phillippe gets to play a "little fairy" in the woodland-themed campaign shoot. She called the whole day "magical," getting to play dress-up and frolic around on set.

"It was a nice blend of [playing a character and being me]. It was a side of my personality that is playful and joyous," she says of the Ava she got to be in the photo shoot. "I felt like I really got to bring out that side of myself but still really felt very much like Ava."

The playfulness of the setting aligns perfectly with the shape of the bottle and the notes of the fragrance — all of which Phillippe fell in love with immediately.

"When I first had the bottle in my hand, my first thought was the bottle itself is beautiful," she gushes. "I'm a very visual person. If you have your cosmetics out, you want them to look pretty. I saw the bottle, and I was, 'Oh, I would love to put that on my vanity!' It's very beautiful. The little flower on top is my favorite. Upon smelling the fragrance, I really enjoyed it. It's very floral and light and very feminine."

Phillippe, who says some of her favorite scents include the candles her mom burns during the holidays and her mom's cookies, tells PEOPLE that now that she's fully settled in her fragrance routine, she likes to wear perfume every day because it sets the tone for how her day is going to go.

"I love that you can switch it up and then all day you're going to be feeling the vibe of what you put on in the morning," she says.

For her, the light scent of Wonderbloom makes it easy to wear all day and feel "light and fresh" for hours.

"It's good for all ages too," she says. "I feel like this is pretty universal. Who doesn't want to smell a beautiful flower?"

5 modern wineries in Russia’s South that are worth visiting

1. Abrau-Dyurso: Russia ’s best sparkling wine

In November 1870, Alexander II ordered to build a winery near Lake Abrau.

This winery on the shores of Lake Abrau was founded during the time of Tsar Alexander II. Since then, it has survived German occupation and a factory explosion. Today, it’s the largest center in Russia for wine-making and tourism.

The winery in the foothills of the Navagir Mountains, not far from the Black Sea, released its first shipment of sparkling wine in 1898. Afterwards, the assortment only broadened, including still wines, alcohol-free and strong alcohol beverages.

Aside from learning about the factory’s history, the process of wine-making and its wine-tasting, Abrau-Dyurso offers unusual tours. During one of them, visitors learn about the secrets of Abrau-Dyurso. The tour program has walks along the winery’s dim underground tunnels, a meeting with local ghosts, the trial of a “drunken staircase” and tells about the legend of an unhappy Circassian young woman whose tears remain as a stream over a rock. 

Among Abrau-Dyurso’s vineyards, which cover 3,300 hectares, there are two observation decks offering a view of the grapevines and the Black Sea, as well as the emerald-green Lake Abrau. People come here to enjoy the romantic and astonishing sunsets, with a glass of sparkling wine in hand. 

Abrau-Dyurso is also a resort with a sailing club, a beach, hotels and campsites. There’s a campsite for travelers with tents, an eco-campsite with cabins in the woods, as well as a car campsite at Round Lake for tourists who journey with trailers.

2. Southern Wine Company: a wine bath

On the southern shore of the Taman Peninsula, between two estuaries – Kisiltashskiy and Tsokur – unfolds the vineyards of the Southern Wine Company, which is a part of the Ochakovo company.

Its vineyards occupy about 1,500 hectares and they grow classic European grape varieties, as well as indigenous varieties – Tsimlyansk black; Saperavi northern; and Citron Magaracha.

Tourists come here for the winery and vineyard tours, as well as for wine tasting in a pavilion with a view of the estuaries’ expanse. During the harvest season you can crush grapes by foot in a wooden tub or take a wine bath. A hydro-massage tub is filled with water mixed with wine, berry and grape leaf extracts, aromatic oil and flowers. All that’s left for you to do is to enjoy the wine with every cell of your body.

3. Skalisty Bereg: wine and stars

The modern winery Skalisty Bereg (Rocky Coast) perfectly suits the local landscape – its shape resembles a light-gray pebble. In the lower part of the winery, sitting on the cliffs of the Semisamsky Mountains, there are workshops; the upper part hosts a tasting hall and a wine shop. A panoramic terrace offers a view of the vineyards and the sea shore. 

The first vineyards were planted in 2011. Vines of three white varieties were planted: Riesling; Sauvignon blanc; and Chardonnay, along with five red varieties: Pinot noir; Merlot; Cabernet Sauvignon; Cabernet Franc; and Krasnostop.

The vineyards are situated on a rocky coast – at a height of 150 to 250 meters above sea level. They neighbor old conifer and juniper-pistachio forests. It’s worth taking the winery’s “Wine and Stars” tour – this can serve both as a romantic date and a scientific lecture. In good weather, when the clouds don’t drape the sky, you can look into a modern telescope on the winery’s observation deck and see the Moon’s craters, as well as galactic nebulae and the star clusters of the northern hemisphere.

4. The Sikory Estate: a dinner with wine

Some of the best Riesling wines are produced at the family winery of Alexander Sikorsky in Semigorye Valley. The vineyards occupy 47 hectares, growing varieties like Bordeaux blend, Burgundy varieties, Riesling and Krasnostop. 

During a tour around the Sikory Estate guests will have a walk among picturesque vineyards, a deep dive into the secrets of wine making and a tasting of local wines. In the wine cellar for wine aging, you should pay attention to the concrete spheres that are unique in Russia. Due to their shape and the effect of the external temperature, these spheres help the wine proceed through the sediment mixing in a natural way.

While at the winery, you should also enjoy an enogastronomic dinner in the grill house and spend the evening meandering among the vineyards. During the dinner, the chef’s dishes are accompanied by perfectly matched wines.

5. Myskhako: a modern winery with history

At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, Cabernet Myskhako was considered one of the best red wines of the Russian Empire. The first vine was planted here in 1869. During Soviet times, the winery was the favorite holiday spot of the Communist Party elite, and at the beginning of the 2000s the winery was an official supplier to the Kremlin.

However, in 2013 the company faced financial problems. It gained a new lease on life only in 2021 when it was thoroughly modernized. In 2022, 14 hectares of new vineyards were planted – with the Chardonnay and Marselan varieties. In total, Myskhako has 227 hectares of vineyards.

Apart from a tour of the vineyards and the wine production facilities, guests are invited to visit the historic wine tasting hall, which was opened in 1973 for Leonid Brezhnev’s arrival in nearby Novorossiysk.

For a long time, only government delegations and celebrities were welcomed here. Today, not only a politician or an actor can enjoy wine tasting in this hall, but rather, anyone who has the desire to do so.

If you’ve given up on ever snagging a reservation at Michelin-starred Don Angie, try its brand-new sibling San Sabino, which opened last month just down the block in the West Village.

It’s helmed by wife and husband chefs Angie Rito and Scott Tacinelli, and named for Scott’s maternal grandfather (after the patron saint of Sanza in the Italian region of Campania).

The menu is heavy on handmade pastas and seafood, and includes tasty bites like Crab & Mortadella dip with Ritz crackers, Stuffed Mussels and the chefs’ take on (who knew?) BEARING FRUIT: Yoko Ono’s Pangaia collab debuts at MoMA Design Store

Sixty years ago, Yoko Ono wrote “Grapefruit,” a book of drawings and instructions for life that today is considered a work of conceptual art.

In honor of its anniversary, the sprightly 91-year-old Japanese artist has collaborated with Pangaia on a limited-edition capsule featuring selected written “instructions” from the book.

The work-from-home friendly pieces — a T-shirt, hoodie and tote bag — debuted yesterday at the Pangaia pop-up at MoMA Design Store’s Soho location as well as online.

Pangaia fans can also shop a selection of the brand’s coordinating looks, available through May 21.
