A trip to Albay isn’t complete without visiting Cagsawa Ruins, the remnants of an eruption of Mayon Volcano in the past. Located in Daraga, this former Franciscan church was built in 1587 but was buried by the volcano’s eruption in 1814. Today, the surviving belfry has become a landmark and tells a story of resilience amidst catastrophe.

This spot offers a unique backdrop for photos, blending history and natural beauty with Mayon Volcano often visible in clear weather. Don’t miss out on the local handicrafts sold by vendors surrounding the site, as well as Bicol delicacies such as sili ice cream, pili, and more.

An architectural marvel with historical significance, Daraga Church (formally known as the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Porteria ) is one of the most iconic Albay tourist spots.

Built on top of a hill in the 18th century by Franciscan missionaries, the church offers a panoramic view of the Mayon Volcano. The church’s façade is an exquisite showcase of intricate stone carvings and elaborate baroque architecture. Inside, visitors are greeted by a calming ambiance, beautiful religious art, and stunning stained glass windows.

Daraga Church was declared as a National Cultural Treasure by the National Historical Institute in 2007. This church is not just a place of worship, but also a testament to Albay’s rich historical and cultural heritage.

Legazpi Boulevard is another must-visit tourist attraction in Albay Province. This incredibly picturesque coastal road offers breathtaking views of the Albay gulf, set against the majestic backdrop of the Mayon Volcano.

Stretching over 2.2 kilometers, the boulevard is a favorite spot among locals for leisurely strolls, early morning jogs, or a chill evening hangout with its vibrant local food scene. Balsa ride in Sumlang Lake

Located in the town of Camalig, Sumlang Lake is a peaceful and picturesque spot that is perfect for a relaxing afternoon. It’s also one of the best view points of Mayon Volcano!

Its man-made lake offers a relaxed setting for leisure activities like fishing and boating. You can also explore the area by bike or kick back, enjoy a picnic by the shore, or visit one of the many stalls around the lake where you can learn traditional weaving, cooking laing, and other industries in Albay.

Don’t miss out on the on-site restaurant offering Bicolano dishes and snacks and a souvenir shop where you can buy clothes, bags, and other woven products.

Whether you’re seeking a peaceful retreat or a quick adventure, Sumlang Lake should definitely be on your Albay itinerary.

Quitinday Hills - one of the best attractions in Albay Province

For nature lovers, the Quitinday Hills is a must-visit destination in Albay. This exhilarating tourist spot is comprised of numerous rolling hills, mirroring the iconic Chocolate Hills of Bohol, and offers a stunning view of Mayon Volcano.

Traversing to one of the hills is easy as it only takes half an hour, with the reward of breathtaking panoramic views and picture-perfect moments at the summit. The best time to go here is before sunrise or before sunset for the views.

Cagraray Eco-Energy Park is one of the most popular Bacacay Albay tourist spots. Spanning 110 hectares, it is the first ecological park in Albay Province, ideal for those who are looking for a blend of adventure and relaxation.

The eco-park’s centerpiece is the amphitheater, a majestic structure inspired by the grandeur of Roman architecture, with the view of the ocean at the background. There is also a chapel that you can visit.

Prior to the pandemic, the eco-park also offers various activities such as wall climbing, rappelling, ziplining, horseback riding, and more. However, as of this writing (October 2023) these activities have not resumed yet. That saying, you can still visit the park for photos.

Next on our list of the best Albay tourist spots to visit is Ligñon Hill Nature Park. Situated in Legazpi City, this pristine park offers a breathtaking panoramic view of Mayon Volcano and the surrounding area. Immersed in the heart of Malinao’s verdant wilderness, Vera Falls is a hidden gem among Albay’s tourist spots. Standing 25 meters in high, this waterfall has a cool, refreshing basin perfect for swimming and a lush surrounding that will make you feel relaxed.

Vera Falls is a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. A visit to this natural sanctuary provides a revitalizing experience that you simply can’t miss when you’re in Albay.

Sky signage near Mayon Planetarium

Situated in the charming town of Tabaco City over an hour’s drive away from Legazpi City is the Mayon Skyline View Deck — one of the best viewing spots on Mayon Volcano and the closest you can go to the volcano in a car.

On clear days, you can gaze upon the perfect cone shape of Mayon, a sight that leaves everyone in a state of awe. More than just the view, the location also houses a mini-museum, a planetarium, and a park, offering visitors a blend of natural beauty and educational information.

Jovellar Underground River - one of the best Albay Province tourist spots

Venturing off the beaten track will lead you to another of Albay’s hidden gems — the Jovellar Underground River.

The best way to explore the Jovellar Underground River is to take a balsa ride to the 180-meter-long cave to appreciate the beautiful teal-colored water and the natural stalactites, stalagmites, and other rock formations inside. The balsa’s route ends in a spot with smaller waterfalls where you can swim and even cliff jump.

The community managing the Jovellar Underground River takes care of this nature spot in Albay, hence the clear, refreshing water inside. It’s a testament not only to the diversity of the tourist spots in Albay but also to the sustainability efforts of the town.

One of the most popular Albay Province tourist spots, Hoyop Hoyopan Cave is a multi-level cavern adorned with stalactite and stalagmite formations. Its name, derived from the Filipino word “hoyop” or “blow-blow,” vividly describes the cool breeze that sweeps through the cave’s chambers.

This cave has interesting history . It is said to be around as early as 3,000 B.C. to 4,000 B.C. It became a refuge during the Japanese war and is now a popular spot for tourists seeking a glimpse of prehistoric art and fossilized seashells. You can take a 30-minute guided tour inside the cave to learn all about it. Hoyop-Hoyopan Cave promises a fascinating journey back in time and an enchanting exploration of Albay’s underground splendor.

Located in the serene town of Camalig, Solong Eco-Park is another gem that adds to the charm of Albay. This park is known for its outdoor activities, namely, trekking, caving to explore the Crystal Cave (also referred to as Solong Cave), and picture taking with the famous hills of Camalig at the backdrop. Even though it is a nature park, this Albay tourist attraction is ideal for all ages.

If you’re looking for a tranquil spot to reconnect with nature, Solong Eco-Park is an ideal destination in your Albay expedition.

Kawa Kawa Natural Park - one of the best Albay tourist spots

Taking its name from its unique cauldron-like shape, Kawa-Kawa Hill Natural Park in Ligao City is another gem in the diverse array of Albay Province tourist spots.

This 236-meter high hill is not just a sight to behold but also a spiritual pilgrimage site, featuring larger-than-life statues depicting the Stations of the Cross. Walk on its 500-meter pathway, leading to the hill’s crater, referred to as “ nature’s amphitheater .” From the top, the panoramic view of the surrounding towns and the stunning sunset are a sight to remember.

Due to its unique topography, it’s also a favorite spot for adventure seekers, housing activities like bike zip lines and rappelling.

Whether you’re in search of a spiritual journey, an adventurous escapade, or simply a moment of tranquility, Kawa-Kawa Hill Natural Park delivers an experience worth your visit.

Quitinan Hills is another hidden gem that you shouldn’t miss. Located in Camalig, it is one of the best places to view Mount Mayon. Come here early in the morning or during sunset for spectacular photos of the volcano, along with the vast green field and free-ranging horses and sheep. For those who want to stay a bit longer, there are also activities you can do here including horseback riding.

This site is also open for overnight camping. Open cottages and patios are available for day trippers. The farm has basic amenities, so adjust your expectations accordingly.

If you’re craving for a day in the beach, chances are you’ll be planning a trip to Misibis Bay or perhaps to the neighboring province of Sorsogon. But Albay also has its share of white-sand beaches, one of which is Muladbucad White Beach.

Located in the town of Manito about an hour away from Legazpi City, this beach is a favorite among locals since it is easily accessible by car, not to mention its dazzling white sand and clear water. Enjoy the salty water, soak up the sun, and appreciate the starfishes that garnered its name as a starfish sanctuary.

If you wish to stay overnight, there is a nearby resort that offers affordable nipa-style rooms.

Lake Danao Natural Park is one of the underrated attractions in Albay. Nestled in the town of Polangui, it features a small crater lake and a renowned fishing ground. It’s home to sinarapan (rare tabios), the world’s smallest fish, as well as various flora and fauna.

To get here, you need to trek for 30 minutes across carabao trails and abaca plantations. Amidst the lush greenery, the lake offers a tranquil retreat for visitors.

There’s no need to take a flight to Hawaii when you can find black-sand beaches here in the Philippines! Because of the presence of Mayon Volcano, you can find a handful of black-sand beaches in Albay, the longest of which is Palipasan Beach in Sto. Domingo.

Palipasan Beach features a black-sand shore, which is caused by the natural erosion of volcanic rock over a long time. The black sands, along with the clear ocean and lush surrounding, creates a wonderful sight to behold. This beach is a great place for swimming and skateboarding, with a few resorts catering to overnight guests.

Quitinday / Jovellar Falls and Underground River

jovellar albay tourist spot

A dozen people onboard a paddle-driven raft chorused with expressions of amazement as flashlights cut through the darkness of a magically-hewn cavern serving as an underground passage in this quaint rural town of a long river straddling from the lower slope of the majestic Mt. Mayon.

Called the Quitinday Underground River situated in Barangay Quitinday, less than a kilometer from the downtown, this extraordinary water conduit offers a narrow arch at its upstream entrance to where the rapids turbulently flow into the four-meter-deep pool inside the cave.

The cave’s width varies from five to eight meters, depending on the irregular span between its walls that feature a strange buildup of finely sculptured limestone rocks that eerily look like an army of animated small minions in fancy formations. It's More Fun in the Philippines, No.1 for Fun!

About 30 minutes from the Green Hills is the underground river in Jovellar. This pristine subterranean waterway may not be as long as that of Puerto Prinsesa but is as majestic nevertheless. A bamboo raft will take you through the length of the cavern, glimmering stalactites jutting from the darkness and an occasional bat zipping out of sight. At the other end is an underground falls where you can bathe. The water is raging, but cool, and extremely invigorating! You can also (very carefully) explore upstream where the water is less vehement but as refreshing.    Read More:   https://www.celineism.com/2016/12/diy-travel-guide-to-jovellar-underground-river-cave.html

QUITINDAY / JOVELLAR

Underground river.

jovellar albay tourist spot

After finishing our lunch, we then proceeded to our next destination, Jovellar Underground River or commonly known as Quitinday Cave and Sigpit Falls or commonly known as Quitinday Falls. While the name is also Quitinday, please note that the hills and cave/falls are from two different municipalities. The Underground River and Sigpit Falls are located in Brgy. Quitinday, Jovellar, Albay which is about an hour away from Quitinday Green Hills.

Make sure that you already wear your swimming outfit before you get there since there are no bathrooms at the cave or river, only at the entrance near the parking area. It’s just sad that you still have to pay PhP10 when using the CR even if you only used it for changing clothes and the PhP10-pay as written is meant for using the shower.😢 Bring also your waterproof bag/pouch to keep your things dry and secured.   Read more:  https://marzwander.wordpress.com/2017/06/17/quitinday-hills-jovellar-underground-river-sigpit-falls-2017-part-1/

Aaah! Thank you for this, makes me want to go in Albay. One thing I didn't like though is that the entrance fee is higher for foreigners. :( There are so much to see in the Philippines and I regret that I haven't tried traveling when I was younger.

jovellar albay tourist spot

I agree with the different of entrance fee, but if we think about it further, it does makes sense. Foreigners normally have money to spend, and if you convert PESO to their currency (say, US Dollar), that is just so cheap for them. My boyfriend just shrugged off and says paying 200pesos is still cheap for them. Well, at least we Filipinos won't have to pay huge entrance fee, hehehe

Such an interesting trip ha! I wish one day makaexperience din ako ng first class flight ng Philippine Airlines.

Oh you can try! Initially book for an economy rate, and if you are lucky to receive an invitation to upgrade from Philippine Airlines, bid for the lowest (I usually bid for 1000) and suwertehan lang. PAL will take the lowest bid rather getting no bid.

I love underground caves and rivers too. Such wonderful nature treasures ♥️

That is true, and pasyal ka minsan!

Never thought na may ganito sa Albay aside from Mayon Volcano! Ang linaw ng tubig grabe

Nakakabighani nga. Super linaw!

ilang oras to Legazpi? Worth it ba ang upgrade to business class? ang refreshing ng tubig sa loob ng cave.

Flight is only 45mins. And the business class is worth it. You will have privilege access sa PAL lounge (though the PAL lounge is small and not too modern) and foods, wifi, comfortable seats, charging station in the lounge. Then sumptuous meal breakfast pa inflight! Sulet yung Php1000 additional naming for business class (economy ticket muna binili naming, then we bid for business class).

Wow Albay! ❤️ Can't believe na may ganito din pala sa kanila. Isa to sa ilalagay ko sa travel check list ko. ❤️

Pasyal ka! Especially during summer, kapag tag-ulan limited access lang for security (minsan kasi bumabaha at tumataas ang tubig sa river).

From 50 to 200 real quick! Haha! I guess it's fine because 200 is just a price of one meal in other countries. It's quite different in Korea, they give more discounts to foreigners. LOL.

hahaha yeah, but okay lang naman yung 200, kasi direct sa locals ang pakinabang. :)

Tricycles – There’s an abundance of tricycle in Legazpi city center that can take your directly to your destination.  This is your best bet if doing a DIY trip, so you’ll be able to visit the places in your Albay and Legazpi itinerary. Rate depends on the distance of your destination. I always use the tricycle when getting around Legazpi, even going to the airport. But always ask and negotiate the price before hopping in. Tricycle drivers in Legazpi are infamous for overcharging tourists. For short distance ride, for example, within Legazpi city center only, it shouldn’t cost you more than ₱20 ($0.38). If you’re in downtown Legazpi and you plan to go to Daraga area, it could cost you roughly ₱100 ($2) up.

Taxi – Cabs are available in Legazpi, always use the meter.  But you can charter a taxi for your Legazpi/Albay day tour. If you’ll hire the taxi for a day, make sure you negotiate the price first,  discuss the destinations in your Legazpi itinerary first, before hopping in. Usually chartered taxi rates start at roughly ₱3,500 ($67) for a day tour, good for 4 passengers.

Jeepneys – A cheap way to get around Legazpi and Albay is by jeepney.  Fare starts at ₱10 ($0.19) from Daraga to Legazpi and vice versa. However, you need to know the routes to avoid riding the wrong one. You can read the route painted on the side of the jeepney and ask the driver to make sure it’ll pass by your destination.

Here’s some of the Legazpi jeepney routes that you might use during your  Legazpi trip if you want to commute or do a DIY Legazpi itinerary:

  • Daraga-Legazpi Loop 1: This is the jeep that you can take to get to Ligñon Hill and Albay Park and Wildlife.
  • Daraga – Legazpi (Tahao Road): . This is the jeep that you can take to get to the bus station (Legazpi Grand Central Terminal). You can also leave your luggage at the luggage counter in Pacific Mall while you do your last-minute shopping or at SM Legazpi.

ALBAY AND LEGAZPI TOURIST SPOTS

There are many new tourist spots in Legazpi now, and I’ve yet to visit them. I will update this blogpost once I do. But for now, here are the top tourist spots in Legazpi, these are the usual places to see in Legazpi and Albay for first timers/first time visitors that you can include in your Legazpi Itinerary and Albay Itinerary.

My apologies, I don’t have much photos to post here because I lost my Legazpi and Albay photos since 3 of my external hard drives were damaged. I will update the photos once I revisit Albay again soon. Thank you to my cousin Pauline and my niece  Ellize andd her mom Ria for providing most of the photos here.

MAYON VOLCANO

Location: Daraga

Once you’re in Albay and Legazpi, you can easily see the jaw-dropping Mayon volcano. There are many vantage points, so, it’s really up to you where you’d like to see it. However, sometimes Mt. Mayon gets a really shy and hides, especially when it’s cloudy.  So, if you want to see it, best to visit during summer or when the weather is fine.  The popular Mt. Mayon viewpoints include Cagsawa Ruins, Ligñon Hill, Embarcadero, Quituinan Farm, and the lava area during the ATV tour. See the details below.

CAGSAWA RUINS

SUMLANG LAKE

This bountiful lake offers an unhindered view of Mt.Mayon. It has now become an Instagram-worthy attraction.  Not much to do here except for the activities mentioned below, but it has a relaxing atmosphere as it is surrounded by greenery.

Location: Camalig

Entrance Fee and Other Fees:

Open Hours:   Monday to Thursday 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM, Friday to Sunday 6:30 AM – 6:00 PM

How to get there: If coming from Legazpi, board a jeep to Daraga. Alight at LCC Legazpi or Public Market. Ride another a jeepney to Camalig, Polangui, or Guinobatan. Tell the driver you are going to Sumlang Lake. Travel time is roughly 30 minutes. Get off at Albay Agri Ethno Eco-Village. Walk to Sumlang Lake for about 15-25 minutes or hire a tricycle to take you to Sumlang Lake.

QUITUINAN RANCH (QUITUINAN HILL)

Open Hours:  Daily 7:00 AM – 6:00 PM

Entrance Fee:  ₱30 ($0.57) +  Environmental Fee ₱20 ($0.38) = ₱50 ($1)

How to get there:  Board a jeepney to Camalig. Fare is roughly ₱20 ($0.38)

Alight at the town proper. Hire a tricycle to Quituinan Hill. Chartered tricycle usually costs ₱200 ($4, good for 3-4 pax) because the driver will wait for you. Make sure you inform the driver to wait for you because tricycle going back to town is very rare. If you are alone, you can ask the jeepney driver to drop you off at LCC Camalig. Then from there, hire a motorcycle to take you to Quituinan Hill. Fare is roughly ₱50 ($1) (one way). Negotiate with driver for your trip back. ₱100 ($2) – ₱150 ($3) should be good for a roundtrip fare since the driver will wait for you.

QUITINDAY HILLS

Quitinday Hills is a cluster of green hills in the eponymous town of Quitinday. It’s  reminiscent of Osmena Peak in Dalaguete, Cebu and Chocolate Hills of Bohol. It easily became a popular tourist site in Albay, as it offers a scenic view of its surroundings with a backdrop of the unobstructed Mt.Mayon.

Entrance Fee: ₱25 ($0.48)

How to get there: If coming from Legazpi, ride a jeepney with Legazpi-Camalig signboard, Legazpi-Guinobatan, Legazpi-Ligao or any jeepney with route to 3 rd district. Fare is roughly ₱25 ($0.48).

Alight at Quitinday Junction/Diversion road. Rent a tricycle to Quitinday Hills, depending on your haggling skill, fare is roughly ₱500 ($10), good for 5 passengers. Travel time is approximately 45 minutes.

At Quitinday Hill, pay the ₱25 ($0.48) entrance fee. Hike uphill takes about 15 minutes.

Travel Tip: While you are at it, you may also visit Jovellar Underground River and Falls (Quitinday River and Falls), ask the driver if you can combine the tour. Fare is roughly ₱1000 ($20), good for 5 passengers. Combined tour may take about 5-6 hours, so, that’s a reasonable rate already since you’re hiring the tricycle for half-day.

JOVELLAR UNDERGROUND RIVER AND SIGPIT FALLS (Quitinday Underground River and Falls)

Though popularly known as Quitinday Underground River and Waterfalls, it is actually located in the town of Jovellar in Albay.  My guess is, because this is usually combined with a trip to Quitinday Hills, visitors must have assumed at first that it is located in Quitinday. The 2-tiered falls is actually called Sigpit Falls by the locals; its water originates from the Jovellar Underground River. Best time to see its teal water is during summer, as it becomes brownish during the rainy season.

Location: Jovellar

Open Hours: 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM

* Tour guide is mandatory. One tour guide is good for 7 tourists.

*Good for every 1-5 persons, one-way entry policy.

How to get there: Ride a jeep to Guinobatan. At Guinobatan, ride a jeep or motorcycle to Jovellar.

Alternatively, you may also ride a jeep to Camalig and alight at Quitinday Junction. From there, hire a tricycle to take you to Jovellar Underground River and Falls.  Fare is roughly ₱500 ($10), good for 5 passengers It can be combined with a tour to Quitinday Hills for about ₱1000 ($20), good for 5 passengers.

  • No mask, no entry.
  • All tourists must undergo thermal scanning.
  • Fill out the Health Declaration Form.

MAYON SKYLINE

Location: Tabaco

About an hour away from Legazpi City is Mayon Skyline, you can visit this before or after your island-hopping trip in Albay since it’s in Tabaco. It has one of the best views of Mayon Volcano, but time your trip during a good weather because Mayon is usually blocked by clouds. Your best bet is an early morning visit as it can get rather cloudy in the afternoon. Otherwise, just try your luck in Cagsawa Ruins, Ligñon Hill, Sumlang Lake, Daraga Church, or Embarcadero.

ALBAY ISLAND HOPPING

Albay isn’t just about Mayon Volcano. There are also islands and beaches that you can visit in the province. A convenient jumping off point of Albay island hopping is Tabaco Port. From here, the islands are about 45 minutes to 1 hour by outrigger boats.

Here are some  of the islands that you can visit, they are located in Malilipot, Bacacay, and Tabaco:

  • Wara-wara Island
  • Pinamuntugan Island
  • Guinanayan Island
  • San Miguel Island

How to get there: From Legazpi or Daraga, take a van or jeepney to Tabaco, Albay. At Tabaco, ride a tricycle or padyak to Tabaco Port. Then from Tabaco port, hire a boat for island hopping. Island hopping rates depend on the boat capacity and the number of islands that you want to visit. Rate starts at ₱2,000 ($38).

On our first day, Rikka Atole took us to the Cagsawa Ruins for a walk followed by ATV. Bico was gracious to take our photos while guiding us through the wilderness at the foot of Mount Mayon. Next stop was Camalig for Quituinan and Sumlang Lake. Finally had late lunch at Dreamers Cafe. Then we pushed forward to Tiwi Pottery. Our second day consisted of two beautiful waterfalls- Busay and Vera. They are about an hour from each other. We had lunch at Gamboa's Orchard which is lovingly decorated with a lot of Santa Claus decor. Our driver for the first day is John then Mark for the second day. They were polite and made sure we were comfortable and enjoying our trip. Rikka is incredible! She took our picture even if it meant walking on narrow rice pathways or going between large boulders. She really took the extra mile for posterity. Overall, I would recommend GUIDE TO THE PHILIPPINES to friends and relatives.
