JR installe un trompe-l'œil spectaculaire en face de la Tour Eiffel

Spécialiste du collage photographique, JR est toujours là où on ne l’attend pas. Des Oscars aux installations dans les milieux urbains, l’artiste est devenu un incontournable de l’image et du trompe-l’oeil. Cette année, il investit le Trocadéro pour transformer la vue de la Tour Eiffel depuis la célèbre esplanade. Grâce à un assemblage photographique minutieux et installé sur le sol et les palissades du Trocadéro, cette anamorphose donne l’impression que la Tour Eiffel surplombe un impressionnant précipice. Les premiers visiteurs ont déjà pu se rendre sur l’installation depuis le 19 mai et enchaîné les séances photo ultra graphiques.

Avant d’habiller le parvis des droits de l’homme d’un impressionnant canyon, JR s’était déjà attaqué à d’autres monuments parisiens. Portraits de soignants à Bastille en 2020, posters installés un peu partout dans la capitale… l’artiste avait même participé au trentième anniversaire de la Pyramide du Louvre avec une installation pharaonique sur le parterre de la Cour Napoléon. Récemment, il a également investi l’un des murs du Palazzo Strozzi à Florence, les marches des gradins d’un stade municipal à São Paulo ou encore la façade entière d’un immeuble de Brooklyn à New York. Avec cette nouvelle oeuvre street art qui met à l’honneur la Tour Eiffel , JR invite de nouveau photographes amateurs et curieux à se rencontrer autour d’un projet créatif accessible à tous. Le dispositif est présent pendant un mois et nécessite que les visiteurs fassent place nette sur le parvis pour profiter pleinement de cette vue vertigineuse. L’équipe de JR a donc installé un système de prise de vue à intervalle régulier afin de dégager l'espace et de permettre à tous de réaliser un cliché extraordinaire.

A Paris, le trompe-l'œil de l'artiste JR qui sublime la Tour Eiffel

Depuis ce mercredi matin, les visiteurs peuvent voir une spectaculaire œuvre de l'artiste JR sur la place du Trocadéro.

D'une banale palissade en bois, l'artiste JR en a fait une impressionnante œuvre. Les passants venus admirer la vue peuvent voir depuis ce mercredi l'intégralité de la Tour Eiffel surplombant un précipice. De quoi donner du vertige aux plus sensibles.

Il a fallu deux mois de conception à l'artiste pour créer cette œuvre indique un membre de son équipe et quelques heures cette nuit pour l'installer. Ses collaborateurs prennent désormais des photos toutes les minutes pour immortaliser le trompe-l'œil (et la commercialiser ensuite).

"C'est assez stylé"

Postée sur Instagram par JR, les fans se pressent désormais sur la place du Trocadéro, comme Julianne venue avec son compagnon, Pierre. "On a vu un article sur cette œuvre, on s'est dit que c'était canon" .

"C'est très grand et très beau, c'est assez stylé. C'est le point du trompe-l'œil. Partout autour, on se dit que cela ne marche pas, et puis à un seul endroit précis, on se dit : 'ah d'accord, j'ai un truc sous les yeux'" , abonde ce dernier.

"En revanche, sur ma photo, il y a un enfant dessus. Je pense qu'une photo sans enfant est vraiment un combat, il faut accepter d'avoir une trottinette ou un enfant sur la photo" , plaisante-t-il.

Francky se plaint lui aussi des enfants en prenant sa photo. De passage à Paris pour voir des amis, il trouve ça aussi "stylé, c'est bien fait" et concède ne pas connaître l'artiste. "Je ne sais pas du tout dans quel cadre c'est fait" .

Un mois pour voir l'œuvre

JR a été invité par le Palais de Chaillot, qui lui a donné carte blanche. Son studio a accepté et pris en charge le projet.

"La palissade sera ensuite le support d’interventions artistiques jusqu’en septembre 2022, en partenariat avec des associations, fondations et écoles supérieures d’art, ainsi qu’avec la Ville de Paris (programme en cours de finalisation)" , explique un communiqué de la DRAC Île-de-France (une antenne du ministère de la culture) et de la CAPA (Cité de l’architecture et du patrimoine).

Cette palissade de bois est installée jusqu'à l'automne 2022 dans le cadre de travaux. L’œuvre éphémère sera ainsi visible jusqu’au 17 juin 2021 avant que d'autres artistes ne prennent le relai.

With his new installation located on the Parvis des Droits de l'Homme in Paris, JR continues his reflection on architecture and excavation of iconic monuments, imagining a trompe l'oeil revealing a street below a large precipice topped by the Eiffel Tower. 

As was the case for his projects at the Louvre and at the Palazzo Strozzi , JR used the anamorphosis technique, which allows an image to be fully revealed from a specific point of view.

JR once again leaves it up to the viewers to make their own interpretation of the project. Hundreds of people have already leaned at the edge of the precipice, bringing life and taking ownership of the piece.

Un canyon s’est creusé dans Paris. Enfin presque. Un trompe-l’œil signé de l’artiste français JR, qui devrait faire le bonheur des photographes amateurs. Avec cette illusion d’optique, la tour Eiffel semble enjamber un canyon en plein Paris.

Une palissade en bois au Trocadéro, de l’autre côté de la Seine par rapport à la tour, et un morceau du parvis des droits de l’homme sont habillés d’une grande fresque en noir et blanc. Le monument emblématique de la capitale française semble ainsi surplomber une avenue droite, deux pieds posés sur deux éperons rocheux.

Dispositif présent pendant un mois

Ce grand collage photographique horizontal et vertical est posé, depuis mercredi 19 mai et pour un mois, à un endroit déjà réputé chez les touristes comme lieu idéal pour immortaliser la tour Eiffel. L’équipe de l’artiste a installé un dispositif de prises de vue à intervalle régulier, qui exige de dégager l’œuvre de son public.

A 38 ans, JR est l’un des « street artists » les plus en vue dans le monde . Une exposition intitulée «  JR : Chronicles  » , du 4 juin au 3 octobre, retracera son travail à la Saatchi Gallery de Londres. Celle-ci le considère comme « l’un des artistes contemporains les plus influents aujourd’hui » , grâce à des « projets artistiques mondiaux qui rassemblent des groupes divers et engendrent un dialogue autour de questions sociales critiques, depuis les droits des femmes jusqu’à l’immigration, en passant par la législation sur les armes à feu » .

Artist JR Installed a Trompe-l’œil Canyon Illusion Under the Eiffel Tower

It's not the first time the popular "street artist" has used the technique to delight crowds..

Over the years, French artist JR has constructed a considerable reputation for himself by producing work that takes the collective public into account as part of its main reason for being. In 2019, the Brooklyn Museum hosted JR’s first major exhibition in North America, and since then, the artist also unveiled a mural in Domino Park featuring photos of over 1,000 residents of New York City from all five boroughs. Now, as part of his latest project, JR has returned to his home country in order to produce a massive trompe-l’oeil beneath the Eiffel Tower that makes it appear as though a canyon is opening up beneath it.

There’s no doubt that JR’s creation, which invitingly welcomes audience participation, will for a time become an incredibly popular site for cheeky Instagram photo shoots. In fact, it’s not the first time that JR has used the trompe-l’œil technique in order to charm and delight his fans. In March of this year, the artist installed a piece called La Ferita (The Wound) on the side of the Palazzo Strozzi in Florence, Italy. The artwork makes it look as though a giant hole has been torn into the side of the building, revealing a semi-imaginary black and white environment inside.

Before that, in 2017, the artist also did an installation that involved placing a giant baby’s head on the border wall between the United States and Mexico so that it appeared the baby’s head was peering over the side. In 2019, with the aid of a number of volunteers, the artist also placed thousands of pieces of paper in the courtyard of the Louvre in Paris, so that it looked like the museum’s iconic glass pyramid entrance was authoritatively penetrating the black-and-white rock below. Clearly, the artist has a thing for the mystery of what lies beneath the Earth’s surface.

JR at the Trocadero for an anamorphosis of the Eiffel Tower

Here is JR ’s latest stroke of genius! The street-artist loves breaking walls. We saw it at Firenze Palazzo Strozzi where he revealed the museum’s rooms on one of the façade walls, or at the great Galleria Continua in the center of Paris, where you could see the Eiffel Tower from within a room.

And now, he is back in Paris a few months following this project with an XXL work, set in the street. He made the most of work at the Trocadero to take over the Parvis des Droits de l’Homme (the real name of the Trocadero) and has set up an anamorphosis , a gigantic fresco revealing a superb scene if you take the time to stand right. He already created an anamorphosis in Paris to celebrate the Louvre Pyramid’s 30 th anniversary .

This Wednesday morning, we have been lucky enough to go there and the result is worth it. This work is a collage of several layers of paper bound to damage with the flow of people. As the artists published on Instagram, the idea is to come as a group, find the place perfectly reproducing the Eiffel Tower and have fun taking pictures of you, by the imaginary cliff , or jumping over the gaping chasm.

This work of art offers a new look on Paris, a fun look, but that is not so wrong. Even though there would never be a cliff between the Trocadero and the Eiffel Tower , the mayor has planned to plant plants along the Pont d’Iéna bridge to create a magnificent 54-hectare and 1-km long garden that will link both historic monuments. The project is set for 2023, right before the 2024 Summer Olympics!

Exceptionally, tickets for visits from June 17 will go on sale later than usual (instead of 60 days before the day of the visit). How much does it cost to visit the eiffel tower.

To check the prices for the Eiffel Tower, please visit this page on the official Eiffel Tower site . The Eiffel Tower online ticket office provides the official prices. The adult price applies to adults 25 years and over.  There are discount rates for young people (12-24 years old), children (4-11 years old) and for those with disabilities. Admission is free for children under 4 years old. The price of the ticket varies upon how you go up (elevator and/or stairs) and the destination (2nd floor or the upper floor) you select. 

The desired visit date is not available, what should I do?

Certain days (weekends, days during peak season between July and August) are in high demand and we sell out quickly, especially for e-tickets for the top floor, which are the most popular. If you are flexible, select another date that is shown as available. The dates marked in orange indicate that the last tickets are available. Lined out or grayed out dates are no longer available. If there is no more online availability, note that tickets to visit the Eiffel Tower are also sold on site at the ticket offices at the monument. Regardless, we sell our tickets online up to 60 days in advance (for lift tickets) and 14 days in advance (for stairs tickets to second floor). If you can, plan your visit well in advance, so you will have the choice of date, destination and time.  

How many tickets can I buy?

On the online ticket shop, you can buy up to 9 tickets for the same order. Groups who want to buy tickets, regardless of the number, must use the ticket office site reserved for groups.

The Eiffel Tower’s online box office allows you to purchase your ticket online for the 2nd floor or the Summit at the official rate. You can purchase individual e-tickets for up to 9 people. Tickets can also be purchased several weeks in advance. With the e-ticket system, experience no lines! You will directly receive your ticket by e-mail so you can print it at home or store it on your smartphone. If e-tickets are sold out for the date/time or destination that you search, it is always possible to purchase tickets on the spot on the day of your visit.  At the scheduled hour, go directly to the lifts or stairs without having to wait at the ticket stands. There are mandatory security checks at the Eiffel Tower’s entrance and before entering one of the pillars.

This comprehensive visit includes a tour by an official Eiffel Tower guide and includes facilitated access to the elevator from the ground to the second floor. Your guide will take you up to the second floor during a one-hour guided tour. You can then continue your visit the whole way to the Top, making sure you take time to explore the second and first floors at your own pace on the way back down.

01 – Meet your tour guide on the esplanade beneath the Eiffel Tower

Punctuality is the key to starting this visit on the right foot. Make sure you arrive at the Official Guided Tours meeting point (provided on your e-ticket) at least 15 minutes before the time indicated on your ticket. The tour starts right on time. Your guide will start by taking you to an exclusive area reserved for visitors taking the guided tour to show you how the two historic Eiffel Tower elevators work.

02 – Learn more about the monument during a one-hour tour

Your guide will then facilitate your access to the elevator taking you to the second floor. During the one-hour guided tour, you will discover the major milestones in the history of the Tower and learn more about how this iconic monument operates on a daily basis.

03 – Self-guided ascent to the top

After your guided tour, you can complete your visit at your own pace. Your ticket allows you to take the elevator from the upper level of the second floor to the Top of the Eiffel Tower. You may have to wait to take this elevator. Take your time and enjoy the most beautiful view of Paris and the surrounding region. If you’d like to raise a glass to celebrate this unforgettable moment, be sure to visit the champagne bar on the top.

04- Make your way back down and explore

Continue to explore the Eiffel Tower on your way back down. Feel free to return to both levels of the second floor. Take in all the different views of the city and surrounding areas and be sure to enjoy the restaurants and shops! To make your way down to the first floor and ground floor, we recommend taking the stairs to discover the tower’s fascinating structure. Once you've reached the first floor, take your time exploring this level and its wealth of content and panoramic views. The guided tour starts right at the time listed on your ticket. You will need to arrive at the meeting point on the esplanade 15 minutes before the scheduled time.

To prepare for your visit, be sure to use Entrance 1 upon your arrival at the monument and get in the line for Official Guided Tours. Allow 15 to 20 minutes to go through the security checks before arriving on the esplanade.
