The entrance to the Kiel Canal near Port Holtenau

Enter Kiel Canal Holtenau

If you ever wondered where the Holstein cow comes from, you’ll find out by traveling along the Kiel Canal, which cuts diagonally 98 kilometers (61 miles) through Schleswig-Holstein. Passengers crossing the canal from east to west enter at Holtenau, a town just north of the port of Kiel. The northern German state is a far cry from the tourist image of beer halls, lederhosen and dirndls: Up here, Germans are known for lounging on the beach in  Strandkörbe  (shaded canvas beach chairs) or watching the sea from covered wicker sofas out of a Thomas Mann novel. The heaths and low hills that reign allow wind farms to harness energy, while the nation’s largest national park, the Wadden Sea, is made up of vast estuaries that in 2009 earned it UNESCO World Heritage Site status.

Called the Nord-Ostsee in German, the Kiel Canal, which connects the Elbe River with the Baltic Sea, was a pet project of Wilhelm II; he finished it just in time for World War I, sparing ships then and since the 400-kilometer (250-mile) journey around Denmark. Today, you sail quietly past waterfowl in the marshes, as well as cows, sheep and bike riders along the banks. You’ll witness small freight ships sharing the water with pleasure craft helmed by serious sailors heading to their yacht clubs, all of which make the Kiel Canal the world’s most trafficked manmade waterway.

Ostseekai Kiel – Cruise Terminal in the heart of downtown Kiel

The Ostseekai Kiel is a cruise terminal in the heart of downtown Kiel with three berths for passenger ships on the western side of the Kiel Fjord .

The Ostseekai, today mainly used by cruise ships, is the former Oslo-Kai, inaugurated in 1961 and was Kiel’s first major ferry port at the time. The ships of the Color Line to Oslo used to dock here and there was also a ferry connection between Kiel and Bagenkop on the Danish island of Langeland until the year 2000.

After the Color Line moved into the new terminal at the Norwegenkai on the eastern shore of the fjord near the Kieler Hörn, the Oslo quay was converted and expanded into a cruise terminal and later renamed the Ostseekai.

In March 2020, in the middle of the Corona crisis, a second terminal building for cruise passengers, Ostseekai 28, was completed.

The Ostseekai is Kiel’s most important cruise terminal and is regularly visited by various cruise ships, including AIDA, MSC, Costa, Mein Schiff and the Astor.

The Ostseekai is part of the Kiel city harbor and in turn part of the entire port of Kiel, also known as the Port of Kiel. The owner and operator of the Kiel commercial port is Seehafen Kiel GmbH & Co. KG.

Kiel Week Concerts & Public Viewing at Ostseekai Kiel

During the Kiel Week, the NDR stage at the Ostseekai has been located in the parking lot of the Ostseekai in the immediate vicinity of the beginning of the Kiellinie . Numerous concerts take place here during Kiel Week. In addition, public viewing takes place here every two years during Kiel Week on the big screen when the German national soccer team is playing a World Cup or European Championship game.

Sightseeing:

Kiel is at the end of a 17 km long fjord. The sea comes right into the heart of the city. The great natural feature in Kiel is the fjord with its beaches. The maritime aspect of the city with its harbors, the massive passenger ferries and the enormous cranes on the docks – that's typical Kiel.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

Tourist Attractions in Kiel.

Getting around Germany is incredible easy. The train network is comfortable, reliable, fast and reasonably priced. German roads are also excellent and motorized transport can be a great way to tour the country.

The national and famous motorway network known as autobahnen, officially there is no general speed limit, but, in an attempt to increase safety and control the pollution, a lot of segments have speed limits (which are strictly controlled). If you rent a car, make sure you stay in the right lane at all times, except when passing! Speeds of 200km or over are not uncommon.

Taxis are dependable, but expensive.

German fast food is cheap, hearty and diverse; there are a number of sausage stands, imbisses and specialty stands; you have many options from which choose. Many of the fast food is of Turkish origin, this food is very popular for being cheap and healthy. The German's favorite Turkish fast food is the Doner Kebab; a thick pita filled generally with either chicken or beef complemented with fresh French fries and salad.

TUI Cruises announced the naming ceremony of its newest addition to the fleet, the Mein Schiff 7, with Environmental Officer Fenia Kalachani as the godmother.

The christening voyage will set sail from Kiel on June 21, with the naming ceremony scheduled for June 22 in the Bay of Kiel.

During the christening voyage, guests can enjoy a special program featuring a new entertainment show and culinary and musical surprises.

“After the christening of the Mein Schiff 4 in 2015, we consciously decided to have a christening in the Bay of Kiel again, because it is the perfect place to start wonderful journeys north and discover seventh heaven at sea. And this is exactly what we are inviting the guests of Mein Schiff 7 to do from June,” said Wybcke Meier, CEO of TUI Cruises.

Kalachani has served as an environmental officer onboard the Mein Schiff fleet since 2022 and is responsible for the implementation and compliance with all relevant environmental regulations onboard the Mein Schiff fleet.

“As an environmental officer, I am pleased to be able to contribute to ensuring that our guests experience how seriously we take environmental protection and responsible and take sustainable use of resources onboard,” she said.

“It is a particularly great honor for me that I am now the godmother for the Mein Schiff 7 – on behalf of the entire Mein Schiff crew. This sister ship of Mein Schiff 1 and Mein Schiff 2 is a good example of how innovative cruises can be in the areas of the environment and sustainability.”

TUI Cruises appoints environmental officer as Godmother for Mein Schiff 7

CruiseMapper logo

As the construction of Mein Schiff 7 nears completion at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland, TUI Cruises has disclosed insights into the vessel's eco-friendly advancements, inaugural events, and the selection of its godmother.

The naming ceremony for Mein Schiff 7 is slated for June 22, 2024, to take place in the Bay of Kiel (Germany) . TUI Cruises has appointed Fenia Kalachani, an esteemed environmental officer within the Mein Schiff fleet since 2022, as the ship's godmother. Alongside her fellow environmental officers, Kalachani oversees the implementation and adherence to all pertinent environmental regulations aboard the Mein Schiff fleet. Her designation as godmother underscores the vessel's steadfast dedication to environmental preservation and sustainable practices.

Embarking on its maiden voyage on June 21, 2024, from Kiel, Mein Schiff 7 will embark on a scenic journey through the Danish South Sea, culminating in its return to Kiel on June 23, just in time for the renowned Kiel Week festivities. Throughout the christening voyage, passengers will be treated to an array of novel amenities, including captivating entertainment shows, performances by renowned artists, and an assortment of culinary and musical delights.

This inaugural voyage is designed to deliver a transcendent experience of luxury and exploration, aligning with CEO Wybcke Meier's aspiration to unveil the epitome of maritime indulgence aboard "seventh heaven at sea."

Kiel Marketing will Touristen in die Innenstadt leiten
